Problems with 2016 Jeep Cherokee ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

On average, the 2016 Jeep Cherokee starts to “feel” problems with the ELECTRICAL SYSTEM and its various aspects after 36 816 miles.

Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2016 Jeep Cherokee

While driving on a residential street, my 2016 jeep cherokee latitude with 45,196 miles displayed the "service shifter" message on the dashboard. the prnd shifter lights were all lit up red. pulled over, put the car in park, restarted the vehicle and the message did not appear. later in the day, the radio display stopped working. scheduled a service appointment with the dealership.

The service shifter message displays on the screen and you can't tell if the the is in dprn becuase all the lights are red. the car sometimes will not shift out of gear. or jerks when it finally does. this care hesitates while in motion and as well as when stationary and trying to move. this is very dangerous. i have taken this vehicle to the dealer who stated that the recall they had was only for a software update with the shifter but this issue should also be a recall with them covering the repairs. i have less than 50k miles there is no reason why i should have to cover the expense of replacing the shifter assembly becuase the shifter is not covered under the warranty they sell you.

This is safety concern! 2016 jeep cherokee car would stop while you driving high speed without any warning sign and all the light will come on can not shifting or restart the car. it happened on me twice already. one time on highway i-95, one time on a busy local road at pa. jeep dealership said it was computer updating, i could not get it. after first time they repaired it, i did feel something wired with the car. so i brought it back to jeep dealership two more time for diagnose. they all said the car had no problem. not even a month, it happened again. suddenly stop! this time they still trying to fix it for me, but i could not trust jeep again. i mean if they can fix it, it would not happened again after three time what ever fix or diagnose.

My jeep keeps breaking down while the vehicle is in motion and i have almost been in several wrecks because of it. i have now done my own research on this issue going on with cars that have my same year make and model and have been experience the same exact issues as i am all over the us. i have been speaking with some of these people who were writing these comments on the jeep website and they have all said they are not dependable and highly unsafe as they have also almost got into wrecks because of it. at this point its only a matter of time before someone is gets hurt due to the vehicle shutting down while in motion or worse, death. something must be done to stop the sale of this unsafe vehicle. i am stunned nothing has yet to be done about this. my car has now been in the shop since i bought it and no one can figure out what is wrong with it. i have had to take it back 3 times and the issue is not getting fixed. now, i'm told that they are having to open some "star" thing - which has something to do with asking the manufacture if these issues are common and what to do to fix them. this is ridiculous that i have been put through hell and they don't even know if the car can be fixed. as of right now the car is completely broken down and no one knows how to fix it. all these other people are having the same issue with the dealerships not being able to figure out what is wrong so they just give the broken car back to the owner and it goes back on the road. i am telling yall this is very unsafe. *dt consumer stated car is fixed.*jb

I have a 2016 jeep cherokee sport. my check engine light came on. i was told there was a thermostat issue. my total repair cost for this one problem was $866.06 at the paramus nj dealer. i'm extremely disappointed that i had such an expensive repair when my car is 2016 and i have less than 50,000 miles. i'm also disappointed that i was told only dealers can update the computer on my vehicle. i have heard of several jeep owners complaining of sensor issues noting repair work wasn't necessary. also, with the check engine light on my auto start did not work.

While driving, vehicle will decelerate and warning light appears to shift car in gear. then car turns off. can not use breaks, all electronics flash and coltage light alarm comes on. when taken to dealer twice, no errors found. my children drove it today and the vehicle suddenly stopped and all warning lights came in along with a message to shift the car into gear. the vehicle was dead. took back to dealer and again no error. i have researched this and many of the same vehicles are having the same problems, but jeep does nothing.

I've had a service shifter message appear numerous times and then disappear. when i would take it in to get looked at i was told that there was no record of that code being displayed in the car log/memory and that the service department at the delearship couldn't find anything wrong with it. upon doing research on this message i found that many other people have had this same problem and if left unchecked can cause the vechicle to shift into park while in motion causing loss of control and accidents. i have received this message while both stationary just when i turned the car on, and also while in motion on a road.

Takata recall my 2016 jeep cherokee will shut off while in motion. the car died while going through an intersection. i was able to coast into a safe place, but car would not restart again after for a few hours. my husband was driving the car and came to a stop at an intersection when the car died again. the car started rolling backwards and he almost hit the car behind him. this is not safe. we have a one month old child, and i do not feel safe putting her in the car. *dt*jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. the contact stated that the liftgate failed to open with the electronic button function. the contact had to manually open the liftgate with the potential risk of being impacted by the liftgate coming down. larry h. miller chrysler jeep dodge ram boise (222 s auto dr, boise, id 83709) indicated that the vehicle was not included in a manufacturer recall campaign and diagnostic testing was needed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 58,000.

I purchased my vehicle new. since having it the panel which displays the radio will randomly go black. i've also had several issues with acceleration. sometimes if i'm at a red light and then it turns green the car will rev and not move anywhere for about 30 seconds. yesterday while i was on the highway my speed dropped from 60 to 40 very fast and i was not able to accelerate at all and had to pull over on the side of the road and my transmission light came on. i've also been driving before and when i hit the brake it makes a noise like its shifting super loud and the brake clicks. my vehicle is in for service right now but i dont feel safe driving it at all. it only has 16,000 miles on it and shouldn't be having all of these issues with such low mileage. yesterday not being able to accelerate on the highway was scary and dangerous.

While driving on highway, automatic 9 speed transmission seemed to lose all acceleration at around 60mph. the "service transmission" notification appeared on the display, and the vehicle started decelerating until it was necessary to pull over and park. problem seemed fixed after an engine restart, but occurred again at higher speed (60mph). i don't know why 2016 vehicles were not included in the s55 recall, it is the same issue.

The turn signal right started to go off took it to dealer they repair this happen s4 times in 2 yrs now the left side is doing it and the right side also they said is not under warranty and its going to cost me 1200 dollars to replace the turn signal assembly eachi ts not a part that is moved its a plug.

The driver information center says service shifter. when active, the manual shift doesn't work but forward reverse and park do not seem to be affected. if you stop shut off the vehicle and restart, it clears. it started doing this 6-9 months ago once in a while but now does it several times a day depending on amount of driving. we brought it into the dealer to have it checked and they said there was no codes or physical problems but could replace the shifter to see if this would fix the problem. we elected not to do this at the present time. we have heard of accidents from this so we just wanted to notify you that it is happening. we would like to address this before an accident occurs.

Shifter service problem shifter and wiring need to be replaced according to dealer my car only has forty seven thousand miles on it search online reveals several other people have had the same problem and there are talks of recalls but nothing has been done at this point

The shift reports service shifter all the lights turn on, has not shifted on us

As of lately, the speedometer toogles up & down through a set of numbers even after attempts are made to reduce speed especially when on cruise control. during cruise control vehicle accelerates beyond set limit & requires extreme force to decelerate. it happens randomly as does many dangerous issues mainly after a software update takes place with the vehicle. if the updates don't cause acceleration concerns it causes vehicle to shut off in traffic & over the last several months a few high risks for major traffic accidents were only avoided by the swift maneuvering of other vehicles or myself when possible to avoid collision. never before experienced so many malfunctions of mechanical/technological problems from a vehicle. as for if the vehicle was stationary, in motion, on a city street or a highway, turning, braking etc when these issues occured the answer would be my jeep has stalled, loss speed, shut off and/or speed up under all these conditions. dealership has me bring it in and they flash the system to "correct" the problem. that is until the next update or some software malfunction causes unexpected scary incident to arise like now with the cruise control that needs addressing.

On july 18, 2018 i went outside to get an item out of back of my vehicle which was stationary and i couldn't get liftgate to lift and i noticed there was smoke in my car, i opened the drivers side door and smoke billowed out. after a few minutes, i got in the vehicle and moved it back away from my house and noticed i had no a/c, radio or anything working on dashboard. i looked in back of vehicle and it was burnt in the back left corner of lift gate. i immediately called my insurance company and they had it towed to mike smith auto group in beaumont. the smell in the vehicle was awful, a combination of burnt rubber and plastic. there was a recall on this vehicle for back left liftgate in 2015 of which i took it in and supposedly it was repaired. i also immediately called the dealership of which they were no help at all and very unconcerned. i talked to my insurance company and they said if it was due to a recall i should call chrysler corporation of which i did daily with no results. they would not let me talk to anyone, they finally sent an inspector of which he just looked at the inside of car, did not take the panels off or anything and sent to the corporation and they sent me a letter stating it was not due to recall. my insurance company sent an engineer who took the panel off and searched it thoroughly and determined it was due to the recall. i cannot get any help on this which is not my fault. *bf *tr *tt*jb

I was driving down a hill at about 20 mph when my vehicle started stuttering and then shut off. the car pulled up a message on the dash that said, ' vehicle must be in park to start the vehicle'. this was absolutely terrifying. i placed the car in park and then restarted the vehicle. this has happened 2 more times since then. car is scheduled to be serviced.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. while driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle stalled and the battery warning indicator illuminated. the contact coasted the vehicle to the shoulder, shifted into park, and the battery warning indicator turned off. the contact waited approximately five minutes and restarted the vehicle. as the contact was driving, the failure recurred. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing or repairs. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case number: 34697040. the approximate failure mileage was 54,000.

While at a stop light, my jeep completely shut off on me and we had to start it back up and it started back up. however this has happened many times before and think they should recall this considering how many of the same complaints i am seeing on this. i have 2 kids in my car at all times and fear it doing this while driving as well. i took it to jeep and they checked it out but now it just feels hesitant while driving. scares me to death

I was driving on i95 near dc in very heavy traffic. the car would come to a dead stop with the parking light and two battery lights on. it had the message to put car in park and then shift to desired gear. it did not work and in the middle of high speed heavy traffic i had to turn engine off and restart the car for it to go back into gear. i went to the local jeep dealership and there were no codes when the car was checked. the service department said it had to be an electronic issue. i was traveling with children on a busy interstate and my jeep did this three times. we could have easily been killed . my dealership will not even look at my car for almost two weeks.

I've had the jeep less than 2 years . only 14000 miles on it . the transmission started jerking and lundging when it down shifted or started off from a stop. my daughter and i where coming back from the human society. while driving at about 50 mph i had to slow down for on coming traffic.the jeep shifted to a lower gear and lunged so fiercely i thought the transmission had fallen off the vehicle. the vehcle immediately shut down. i was at a complete stop. lights started flashing service transmission. i had no power to move. im on an over pass with traffic and theres no where to go in the middle of traffic. by chance the jeep was able to start and accelerate to 5mph and get to a safe place to pull over. it was a very serious hazard for me and my daughter and other drivers we basically glided to a complete stop in the midst of traffic while doing 50mph. than starting it up and only doing 4 tmph. this was clearly a very dangerous situation. i dont feel safe or confendent. i paid a premium price for a vehicle that should be dependable and safe. now the jeep wont start. the rear button to close the hatch has quit working. the start button will not start the car at all. when it started to malfunction. it would hesatate as if the battery where dead. when it did start the settings 'climate control would be set to defrost. the a would show up on the face without being pressed. and eventually the screen would not react to touch at all. and the radio wouldnt play. but all elise seemed to work without a problem. the windows worked fine the lights where bright. there wasnt a problem with the battery. i am applauded that jeep would think this is acceptable for a new vehicle im the comsumer. i paid for a product that has to and is a to certain expectations.

My vehicle was on cruise control at 55 mph and during a downhill slope, the vehicle accelerated and rpms jumped to 6-8,000. i could not get the cruise control to shutoff and stop acceleration. i almost hit the car in front of me. has happened twice now. i have also had it lurch forward at stop signs when taking off. *tt *tr

Faulty engine with excessive oil consumption. engine piston blown at 54k, on brand new 2016 jeep cherokee, and consequently repaired under manufacturer warranty. fca and dealership difficult to work with and attempted everything to avoid the repair until i obtained legal counsel. the vehicle still randomly shuts off while being operated which makes it a danger to all. i have also experienced issues with the transmission, which the dealership said stemmed from the electrical system. the vehicle would get "stuck" in a particular and cause the vehicle to "jump" while attempting to idle down. lastly, the service shifter light has come on. the light comes on while the vehicle is in motion and does not appear to effect the operation of the vehicle. nevertheless, this is another problem added to the engine and transmission issues. this vehicle is trash and needs to be completely recalled. shame on fca for selling this vehicle with a ton of defects. shame on any authority that does not investigate the claims regarding this vehicle, or does it take a catastrophic event to gather your attention.

My car has a "service shifter " message popped up at 34461 mileage going 65 mph on the highway just straight no turning no nothing. the shifter lights are all lite up as weel and i cannot see the middle screen that shows my mph in big letters. i called jeep stating not to worry about it. turned car off and turned back on and no message second time was at 36044 miles going 15 mph through a parking lot and the shifter is all lite up and "service shifter" message came back on again . turned car off after parking and turned back on after a few hours and was not on.

I've owned this vehicle for three weeks. i parked my cherokee outside my office at work, shut it off as normal, and came back out a few hours later to run some errands. i received a message that stated 'no fob detected'. i tried the auto start, which worked, the lock and unlock from the key fob worked, but when i tried to start the vehicle the only message received was 'no fob detected'. i called jeep and they tried to walk me through a reset, which did not work. aaa came out to try to assist. they disconnected the battery, tried jumping the vehicle, and performed the reset as well. none of this worked. i had to have it towed to the dealership and am still waiting on diagnostics to tell me what was wrong with it and how much it will cost to fix.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. while driving up a hill, the vehicle stalled and the battery indicator illuminated. the vehicle was able to restart after a few minutes. the vehicle was taken to the dealer (century dodge chrysler jeep ram, 13500 veterans memorial pkwy, wentzville, mo 63385), but the failure could not be duplicated. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 27,000.

The automatic lighting had been switching between day and night mode for a couple of days. then while driving, without warning, the car came to a stop and gave a message "you must be in park before shifting gears". the engine then stopped. this occurred in a rotary, luckily on a quiet street. after a couple of minutes, i was able to start the car and it appeared fine.

While stopped at an intersection, the vehicle stalled. all light went off and brake pedal stuck down. i put car in park and turned key. tried to restart vehicle and nothing started... light just came on the dash with every item flicking. the brake pedal was still stuck down. if i out the car in neutral, unable to push vehicle and unable to remove parking break. keep in mind i'm at a very heavy traffic intersection. took about 5 minutes until the car told me to press break to release parking break . i turned the key and the vehicle started again. now i am afraid this will happen every time i come to a stop. my car has 19300 miles.... nothing to this extent should be going wrong.

Today, february 1, 2018 i was driving on a straight road and my 2016 jeep cherokee and it shut off in the middle of me driving it. i was on a busy street in my town and almost got t-boned by another car. i am 5 months pregnant and this is a major safety concern. i fearful to step back into my vehicle and drive it.

Takata recall i have had my car looked at a couple times for the same issues and no luck getting it fixed. while driving on both highway and regular roads i will get a warning chime and all of a sudden my service parking brake, abs, traction control, and four wheel drive- overheated lights come on. i then lose power steering, the steering wheel becomes very stiff and the brakes stop working. it is very scary especially in the winter time, to not be able to control your vehicle. i am pregnant and have a 2 year old child and do not want this jeep anymore unless fixed. i have done research and it seems that people with the same jeep even different years have had the same issue. please help! this always happens when the vehicle is in motion. i have many of the same images just all different days this has happened to me. i will attach and image below. as stated this has happened multiple times not just one day. thank you.

The transmission slams into gear when re-accelerating. (usually at lower speeds) sometimes the rpm's will increase but the vehicle will not move forward. (this can be dangerous when you need to get up to speed safely.) there is also a minor clicking noise when the air conditioner is turned on. (mostly just annoying)

Jeep 2016 power liftgate won't open or close. this leads to the inability to manually close the liftgate, and the interior lights stay luminated. there are recalls; however my vin isn't listed. i notified the dealer who changed the strut for over $300 and it still occurs.

I came to a complete stop at a red light. the brake and gas pedals were frozen in place and the elictrical equipment on the dash went haywire for a moment. the message center then showed the message "start stop system unavailable/ please return to park, then choose desired gear." i was able to turn on my flashers, but despite shifting to park and to drive several times the transmission would not engage. the engine did not seem to be running. i had to turn the car off and then on with the key several times before the engine turned over. the same thing happened at the next two stop lights. i drove about three miles past the third stoplight, and the same thing happened but while i was driving in motion on a highway at about 55 mph. there was no shoulder. it was terrifying. i turned on my flashers and came to a full stop coasting with no brakes and no ability to shift gears. i turned the car off and on with the key again and the car seemed "fine." i used the dash button to turn off the auto-off mechanism and drove the last ten miles home without incident. i'm not sure whether the ess system is related to the malfunction, however the error message and result of turning it off suggests it is. i still have a message that says "service auto on off system." calling dealership today.

Auto on/off will stop working and notify me on my screen. it will state i need to get it serviced. also it will pop up that the gear shifter stops working, and need to get it serviced. both will disappear after engine is turned off and back on.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. the contact stated that the low beam and high beam headlights failed to illuminate properly with low visibility. the dealer was contacted (percy's auto sales inc, 40 houlton rd, presque isle, me 04769, (207) 764-4493), but the vehicle was not diagnosed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin and failure mileage were not available.

1) car stalls at random without warning and no apparent cause. i've had the car stall at low speeds after turning (able to restart) but most significantly an incident occurring 7/9/2017 when i lost all acceleration on the interstate at 65mph while towing a 3500lb trailer. the tachometer and speedodometer dropped immediately to zero. total shutdown. concurrently all the electronics shutdown, including power brakes. thankfully i was on a flat stretch of road and was able to drift into the breakdown lane. the car would not restart; no electrical components with the exception of the hazard lights and emergency brake were functioning. car had to be towed. 3) cruise control fails to maintain car speed on moderate downgrades...rpm's will shoot to 5000, then car will "take off" increasing speed by as much as 15 mph more than control is set for. my complaints have been verified/replicated by a jeep chrysler service center but they have stated they can't fix the car because they do not know what is causing the issue.

Beginning about two month ago, i have been going back to the dealer for drive train related issues. the initial issue was a failed rear hub at around 25,000 miles which was found during an oil change. next, the main drive shaft (propeller shaft) began making grinding noises as well as a wobble/thumping sound at highway speeds. the grinding sound was resolved but the wobble/thumping continued. the followup for that sound found failed half-shafts (both sides), failed rear differential, and failed transfer case/module. the car was returned to me without all repairs being completed due to lack of parts and "warranty not authorizing additional days of rental" the car then began to give failed parking brake service codes and check air bag system codes which supposedly are related now to a failed on board control module. when the most recent codes (today) were given the car would not shift into gear initially.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. while driving approximately 20 mph, the vehicle's speed suddenly increased to approximately 30 mph. the driver crashed into a traffic cone. a police report was not filed and there were no injuries. the contact also indicated that the rear windshield wiper suddenly stopped operating. on some occasions, after removing the ignition key from the ignition switch a message indicating "key inserted" would display. the vehicle was taken to huntington jeep in huntington, new york, but the failures could not be duplicated. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the vin was invalid. the failure mileage was 10,200.

Water saturating floor and carpets under floor mats, passenger front and rear. may be the cause of intermitant door locks , and at time uconnect radio and climate control system restarts. first visit to dealer, dealer resealed/rewelded rocker panels and improperly sealed areas. second vist dealer stated the leaking was a sun roof. however, vehicle doesn't have a sun roof. ? the dealer is unable to replicate water coming in from rain but has not checked ac condensation or other means of entry that we know of. water does appear to show up faster during periods of hot eather and ac usage. please note - i have pictures of mold growing rapidly on the carpet under the floor mats.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. while the vehicle was parked inside the garage, the automatic start feature erroneously activated and the engine started. the automatic start feature and key fob had not been used. the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure, but the rfhm was reprogrammed and the keyless ignition software was improved. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was invalid. the failure mileage was 10,648.

Each time i have been driving the vehicle when the brakes failed without warning the last time (4th time) my car was in the shop because the tranmission seal had a leak. while the mechanic was test driving the car the brakes failed with him. when i have had been driving the jeep and the brakes failed i was pulling into different locations and the brakes would fail and not stop the car. the brake were as hard as a rock and just simply would not stop the car. i feel after 4 times this car is not repairable and i am now mentally anquished with driving it i am afraid the brakes will fail again and i might get into an accident because of the brake issue and possibly get hurt, killed, kill someone else this is without a doubt a safety issue. the mechanic at the dealership has even said the car is not safe. i have a case number with the chrysler manufacturer on the case. it is# 35139860

We have taken our jeep in countless times since obtaining it brand new in 2016 for a service shift issue. they replaced our thermostat the first time then wiring harness to the transmission/bcm the second time since then the dealership has stated with out a check engine light not to worry about this issue. every time it happens our jeep heats up past 220 degrees and starts to run rough.

Purchased vehicle on 12/14/2015. on 1/25/17, at 17,000 miles the vehicle stalled while driving through an intersection. it was raining heavily and causing a traffic issue. law enforcement had to be called to re-direct traffic. since the first stall, the vehicle has been to the local dodge/jeep dealership four times for the same issues (4/20/17, 8/18/17, 3/25/18 and 12/4/18). they have replaced coils, filters and explained the engine will shut down if it senses low oil. they continue to state the oil consumption as the reason for the stalls. they have no solution but to bring the vehicle in every 1000k miles to check the oil. the vehicle stalled again on 12/25/18. luckily, i was in a parking lot and the vehicle behind me was going slow enough to stop. if not, i would have been hit with my toddler in the vehicle. usually it takes several hours for the vehicle to start again but on this incident the vehicle started within 5 minutes. the vehicle is now showing a "service shifter" and the dealer stated it needed a new battery. i replaced the battery and the "service shifter" was back on within 15 days of replacing the battery. this vehicle is a safety hazard.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. the contact stated that the vehicle would not start after being parked overnight. the dealer was unable to diagnose the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vin was invalid. the failure mileage was 2,000.

Uconnect system key fob with remote start capability is able to start the vehicle accidentally if the fob start button is depressed in a pocket. in the instance in question, vehicle was parked in home garage, fob was in pocket of owner inside the home. owner walked into garage to find vehicle was running. remote start feature of fob cannot be disabled.

Lane departure warning capability is not functioning properly. it goes off while in operation if the vehicle turns a corner and often when changing lanes. car alarm goes off unexpectedly and without cause. has been returned to the dealership repeatedly only to be told they are working on a software update. no estimate of time can be given but advised this is a problem with the renegade.

The uconnect unit quit working therefore no way to adjust radio, heat, use, bluetooth, backup camera stays on when driving frontwards down road, etc. cannot use regular knobs to adjust. have now been waiting almost 2 weeks for a new radio to see if that fixes the problem. also thumping noise in the right front in when making a turn & going over a bump at same time. buying a brand new vehicle you should not have to worry about problems like this after owning it for less than 6 months. *tr

I had a warning on my car saying that my 4whell drive was not working and that i needed to call for service . now my car is in repair and they ordered an actuator for the transfer case. vehicle was driving fine all the time with only that warning so i took it i

Purchased 2016 jeep cherokee brand new from susanville auto center and the car has now been in the shop 6 times and towed in the last time. it has now fried the coil and the spark plugs. it has been in for 2 wheel sensors, thermostate replacement at 1500 mile, coolant leak at 2500 and now the coil and plug issue while driving home from auburn ca over 200 miles from home car started jerking dash flickering and use over 3/4 tank of gas in 50 mile and would only go 45mph at 25k. i drive for a living an can not afford to be stranded in the middle of no where as a woman. i've contact jeep corp and of course no response. dealer wont do anything either. now to try ca lemon law and attorney general.
