Recently reported AIR BAGS problems on 2005 Honda Pilot

The srs light came on while driving the vehicle back to the house. took the car to the mechanic and he analyzed the problem that the computer was not talking with the airbag system. no blown fuses no other issues noted with sensors other than failed airbag control computer unit. *tr

Airbag warning light on. dealer determined left front impact sensor was issue. $640 repair for sensor that should not ever fail for safety reasons. appears issue is not an isolated instance and should be covered by dealer or recall issued to enforce the issue. what recourse do i have available to recover cost?

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda pilot. while driving at 2 mph, the air bag warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the air bag sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 115,000. ma 08/11/15

My car is part of an airbag recall by honda. i have been trying to get my airbag replaced since november of last year. the miami honda dealerships i have approached are south motors and brahman honda. they have been totally uncooperative and have setup systems to give customers the run around. i understand that place with hot, humid climate like florida, are at higher risk for airbag malfunction. it is outrageous that these dealerships are playing games with my safety and the safety of my family. i do not understand what it is that they are waiting for to take care of this issue. i would like to know what it is that your agency will do to enforce this mandate. i will be willing to file a complaint with the court or testify if needed. i look forward to hearing from you on this issue. *tr

Passenger side airbag should be covered and replaced under nhtsa recall 14v-700, mfr recall jm3 which states that any vehicle ever registered in the designated high humidity states, which includes georgia, is subject to the recall. while currently a resident of north carolina we were previously residents of georgia where this vehicle was registered. as such i contacted a local honda dealer who stated the driver's side was covered but the passenger side was not and they replaced the driver's side unit. i again asked them to replace the passenger side and they said no but to continue to watch for additional recalls. i then contacted honda's national customer service number and opened a case indicating that my vehicle was previously registered in georgia and requested they replace it as a hazard as defined in the honda and nhtsa recall. a week later they advised that they would not replace the passenger side unit under the recall and offered no explanation. i recently sent an email to the local dealer's service manager regarding my concerns and requesting they honor the recall but received no response. it makes no sense that they would change one side deemed a safety hazard but leave the passenger in a potentially lethal situation when both units have been exposed to the same high humidity environment. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda pilot. the contact received a notification for nhtsa campaign number: 14v351000 (air bags) and stated that the part needed was unavailable to repair the vehicle. the dealer was unable to indicate when the part would become available. the manufacturer was not notified of the issue. the contact had not experienced a failure.

Submission from congressman paulsen on behalf of constituent re airbag recall (reply directly to the constituent). *tgw the consumer stated honda should be required to replace all air bags. *jb

Honda pilot was serviced at ed voyles honda on 10/22 and picked up on 10/23. extensive service performed on car...timing belt, transmission, air bags replaced per recall, engine mounts replaced, oil changed, etc. picked up car on 10/23. on 10/24 backed out of driveway and put car in drive gear. car accelerated without me putting foot on acceleration. could not stop vehicle. acceleration continued and increased. only way to stop car was to run into a tree. not sure if caused by recent work or i have read now that 2005 honda pilots have had issues with unprovoked acceleration. usaa insurance company has totaled car and car is at junk yard now. *tr

Recall subject: passenger side air bag inflator may rupture. report receipt date: june 20, 2014 nhtsa campaign number: 14v353000 component(s): air bags all products associated with this recall: honda pilot 2003-2005 my 2005 honda pilot has not been recalled. it was originally sold and is currently registered in virginia. given that takata has admitted to u.s. safety regulators that it improperly stored chemicals and failed in the manufacture of the propellants used in the airbag inflator along with faulty record keeping as to which cars were defective, i am driving a car that has been shown to have the potential to have degraded inflators causing them to explode and spraying pieces of metal into the cabin of the car. recall subject: driver side air bag inflator may rupture. report receipt date: june 20, 2014 nhtsa campaign number: 14v351000 component(s): air bags all products associated with this recall: honda pilot 2003-2007 my 2005 honda pilot has not been recalled. the driver side air bag information is similarly situated to the passenger side air bag information. i have attempted to remedy this death and/or dismemberment hazard by contacting honda directly with no success. my original window sticker, as found on the car window when purchased, indicates "parts content information" "japan 10%". the concealment and non-disclosure of serious safety defects and failure to fix the problems is not merely an inconvenience for me but a serious health threat. *tr

I would like to encourage the transportation secretary to expand the air bag recall nationally, as it is a matter of highest concern to americans without boundaries. all americans affected deserve to have their vehicle air bags replaced, no matter where they live.

Vsa engaged while driving xway, pulled vehicle to right, into other lane. this was repaired per previous recall, but continued to engage periodically within 3 days. additionally, i am on list for airbag recall, but not yet recalled in ky. we are in ohio valley, with higher humidity than florida. i have driven to florida multiple times. we should be added to recall list. *tr

Takata recall

The front right airbag sensor required replacement. last month, my mechanic reset it. he said he'd look further if it the airbag warning light went on again. it did. but i took it to the honda service center. i felt this was too important an issue. i was told that it was a defective front right sensor and it needed replacement. cost to me was $300. i feel that this is a safety feature that should be reliable and not require replacement. the car not new, but well maintained and garaged. we are the original owners. incidentally, honda service reps said they could not tell me if i had a takata srs system, but that it definitely was not recalled. i'm fairly certain it is the same system from news reports, and think it should be replaced - but that's a separate issue. *tr

Suddenly, our srs dashboard light came on and will not go off. after looking at the owner's manual, we promptly set-up a service appt at honda to diagnose/fix the problem as it relates to an important vehicle safety feature. in the meantime, a family member who works in the auto repair industry used his computer to pull the codes and diagnose the problem so we would know what honda service should be telling us at the appointment. the vehicle is showing an error code of 42-11 for the front impact airbag sensor on the passenger side. this vehicle has not been in an accident and there is no reason for the sudden malfunction. upon visual inspection of both front sensors, the yellow protective sheath has pulled back from the sensor, leaving the junction where the wires meet the sensor exposed low in the engine, and thus creates the potential for debris and weather to impact their performance. in doing research online, there are numerous honda pilot owners who are experiencing a similar problem with the airbag sensors and honda is charging hundreds of dollars to fix a safety problem that seems to be widespread among this vehicle. i believe that this should be investigated as a recall item because it is a huge safety issue if the airbag sensors will not allow airbags to deploy in an accident. please see the link below for just some of the owners who have documented this issue in an online forum: http://www.arfc.org/complaints/2005/honda/pilot/air_bags/problem.aspx. *tr

Passenger air bag does not work. *tr

The airbag warning light is lit. first intermittently, now constantly. was diagnosed ($120 at burns honda for taking a reading off on-board computer) to be a faulty right-front impact sensor. the dealership is out of the part, so i need to wait for it to be shipped. the car was never in an accident, the air bags never deployed. the sensor just stopped working (rusted out?). the same thing happened a couple of months prior with a wheel speed sensor. do honda's electronics parts have operational life of 100,000 miles? i feel the airbag sensors should be recalled, and replaced at the manufacturer's expense. *js

Airbag warning light went on and stayed on. i am original owner and the car has never been in a crash, nor have airbags ever deployed. brought into the dealer and, after $115 diagnostic test, was told right front sensor behind bumper "went bad". charge to replace 1 sensor is over $400, although dealer will waive diagnostic test fee. after seeing many people with similar problem, seems honda should issue recall. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda pilot. the contact stated that the air bag warning light illuminated continuously. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing, but was not repaired. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v351000 (air bags); however, the part was unavailable to perform the repair. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

With the srs indicator constantly on, the dealer has advised me that both front bumper crash sensors must be replaced. he mentioned that due to their position they have a tendency of rusting out. sounds like a design deficiency. *tr

Recently my airbag light on the dash was not going off, took it in for a "$98.90 diagnosis" for them to determine there is no signal from either impact sensor. this is a huge safety issue in my eyes and from what i have read many of these vehicles have had the same problem. i am being told it will cost me $477.00 to fix this issue, $127 for parts and $350 for labor, i can't afford this right now. this is putting me and my family at risk. i am the original owner and haven't had an accident where the airbags have ever deployed, i hope i never do. you need to fix this honda! make the right call and recall the 2005 pilot for this issue please! *tr

Vehicle was taken to dealership for recall on other parts and we told them the airbag safety restraint light has been on for several months. we were told the diagnosis would cost 38 dollars plus tax. they diagnosed faulty left and right front airbag sensors. they told us in an accident the airbags would not deploy. this item would not be covered under warranty and would have to be done at our expense. after much objection they said " sorry there's nothing we can do about it". with that we were told we would have to schedule the repair at a later date and parts would have to be ordered. the dealer sent us on our way knowing if we crashed, especially in a front end impact, the airbags on their product they sold to us as "safe for the whole family" would not deploy. unacceptable!! please help. *tr

Srs warning light will not go out. cannot afford diagnostics test or new sensors. should be recalled for safety. many other honda pilot owners have same problem. thanks *tr

Srs light is on from researching it, this could be seat belt restraints, or many airbags. *tr

I noticed that the airbag sensor light is on. took it to the dealer and he said it needs to be replaced. $350.00. there are too many documented incidents where the 2005 honda pilot is having this problem. especially when there was no impact. we as consumers need to make this clear to honda that this is a safety issue that needs to addressed. *js

I contacted 2 honda dealerships (south motors and brahman honda) about my airbag recall. after several calls and days of trying to set an appointment, i received a phone call saying that i will be contacted for an appointment soon. this was over 2 weeks ago. i live in miami, where the chances of the airbag malfunctioning is greater than anywhere else in the states. i drive in fear each day that my airbag will go off, killing me and my family. it seems that these dealerships and honda only care about car sales, but do not care about the safety of their customers, when their product has defects. *tr

The srs light in my 2005 honda pilot is full on red. it started a few weeks before flashing but going off. then it stayed on for a day and then it went off from a day. now it's on all the time. i took it to the dealer and it wasn't covered under the extended warranty. it is the opds seat sensor and faulty power supply. this will cost me $989.00 on top of the $81.00 i paid to have the srs light diagnosed. i feel this is a safety issue and honda should take car of this. *tr

No accident and air bag light for passenger was on and off intermittently and then most recently the air bag warning light is permanently on the dashboard. from reading the complaints, it appears that the sensor/ wiring is faulty and i'm going to be stuck with another planned obsolescence bill and my safety is in jeopardy until i am able to pay honda for their part and labor. now that's an offer one can't refuse. *tr

Srs light remained on. paid $119 t honda to do diagnosis [they won't do it without paying the fee]. results said that it's a failed left side front sensor. dealer asking for $285 on top of the fee. based on the complaints here, honda should be investigated as this might be a potential recall as its a safety issue. my pilot has never been in an accident so no cause for the sensor to be defective other than poor design/workmanship and honda should stand behind safety. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda pilot. the contact stated while driving 15 mph, another vehicle crashed into the passenger side door and none of the air bags deployed. the contact also mentioned that the passenger had a concussion, and his child's elbow and knee were injured. the vehicle was destroyed and it was towed. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 128,000.

Air bag indicator light came on after starting vehicle and stayed on while driving. light stayed on consistently for up to 2 weeks. after 2 weeks, light illumination was intermittent. took the vehicle to the dealer and dealer diagnosed that the right front air bag sensor was bad and needed to be replaced at a cost of $345. dealer indicated this was not covered under warranty for the life of the vehicle. noticed there have been many complaints for this same issue for the 2005 honda pilot. also noticed there was a recall for this issue on the 2005 honda odyssey. why is there not a recall for this issue on the 2005 honda pilot? a device critical to the overall safety system of the vehicle, which is not a wear item on the vehicle, should not fail. if it does, it should be replaced at no cost to the consumer. *tr

Air bag warning light illuminated when car was started. brought it to the dealership and they told me both front impact sensors were no longer functioning. *tr

This incident has happened on a few occasions with me driving the vehicle and additionally with my wife driving (she drives it the most). i started the vehicle, placed it in gear and started to drive it up the street. as i approached a traffic light, i glanced at the speedometer, and noticed the maintenance required and srs light on. this puzzled me because we never experienced any issues with the vehicle other than regular maintenance lights (filters, oil change, etc). i turned the vehicle off for a few seconds, restarted it and the light went out. afew weeks later, it happened again. the difference was that this time i noticed it right after putting the vehicle in drive and driving off. thinking it happened because of a possible glitch in the ignition, i immediately pulled over and turned the vehicle off and restarted it. just like the first time, the light didn't come back on. the 3rd time it happened, it remained on the entire time i drove and to and from the grocery store. now, it pretty much does it intermittently - cycling intermittent to steady at various times. after searching online for recalls, i read several complaints from drivers in various states (usa), they are experiencing the same problem and have voiced it to honda but they haven't issued a recall; thus stating that the airbag may not deploy during an accident and they are not responsible. instead honda dealers are willing to charge approx. $120 for diagnostics and $300+ for repair - which is entirely unfair to us consumers. however honda, issued a recall on the 2005 honda odyssey which had very similar (if not exact) problems with its srs. honda is aware of this issue and doesn't seem to care about the safety of the motorists. this is clearly a safety issue and need to be recalled on these vehicles. *tr

My air bag light was on and i was not able to get an inspection sticker. i brought it to the honda dealer in seekonk, ma to find out what was wrong and they said it was a sensor that needed to be replaced and cost $450.00. i would think since this is a safety issue there was some recall ? they told me if i was hit on the left side of my car the airbag would not work. not to mention i have already had to replace the engine in 2009! the car was only 4 years old. *tr

Right front airbag impact sensor failure. just replaced the left front about 6 weeks prior. planned obsolescence by honda, i guess. *tr

The airbag/seatbelt light came on while pulling out of a parking space. the vehicle has never been in any accidents. many honda pilot owners are having the same problem. honda says they are not responsible if the airbag does not deploy in an accident. this a known issue honda should do a recall. *tr

The srs light is on. i know there was a recall on this for earlier model pilot. i was wondering if this is possibly the same recall as well. *tr

Drivers front airbag impact sensor failure. *tr

I am the original owner of a 2005 honda pilot exl. the srs light came on while driving the vehicle and did not go off. there has been no impact to the vehicle. upon inspection, the honda dealership stated that the passenger front impact sensor failed. the sensor must be replaced at a cost of $305. if not replaced, the airbag would not be deployed in an accident. there have been similar incidents reported by other 2005 honda pilot owners and this issue should be addressed by nhtsa. *tr

Airbag light came on intermittently. after i took it in for the recall, the dealer said the sensor was bad and needed to be replaced for $200. i had that done and the second day following, it was on again. it intermittently lit for about 3 months. now it is almost always on. i see similar issues listed. god forbid they don't work when i need them. not thrilled with the pilot. transmission light also intermittently lights (blinking d). i had this fixed years ago after the dealer said new trans for $3,000. i didn't bite on that one because the shifting was seemless. seems that mechanics maybe rely on computer too much. had switch changed out and it stopped for about 2 years. now it's on intermittently again. tire pressure is another problem. electronics stink!

The pressure switch in the passenger front seat is broken...it goes on and off for no reason, with light coming on at the dashboard. we have had the airbag checked 3 times, twice by our mechanic, once by the dealer, and they say it's fine. the pressure switch is mal-functioning. we were told it would be $300-$400 to take apart the seat and replace the switch...cannot afford it. *tr

While driving, airbag, (!), vsa, vtc and brake lights all lit up. horn stopped working as did all controls from steering wheel (cruise, radio airbag light). i pulled over, everything seemed to work but lights would not turn off. went to honda in ft pierce, fl. was told it's probably a low battery. replaced battery, lights all stayed on. contacted johnston honda in stuart, fl. head mechanic told me he had no idea what would cause this and if he ran it on diagnostics, it could take 8 hours at $80 an hour and he still may not find the problem. brought this lemon to local mechanic who ran on diagnostics for 2 hours. could not find problem so he did not charge. as almost all other complaints above, while driving at 35 to 40 the car starts to shudder as though it will turn off. was told it's possibly defective motor mounts. i have contacted american honda motor works in california with these issues and they essentially told me to 'gfy'. stated car is not their problem. *tr

Srs indicator light will not go out. reset mes - and cleared memory. srs light still active. mechanic found problem with front airbag sensor. luckily no incident at this time, but can't find warranty coverage data?! or recall despite numerous complaints like this! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda pilot. the contact was driving approximately 60 mph when another vehicle crashed into the contact's rear, pushing the vehicle forward. the contact's vehicle rolled down an embankment and landed on the driver's side. the air bags failed to deploy. the vehicle was destroyed and the contact suffered multiple fractures of the lumbar spine. a police report was filed. the manufacturer was not notified and the vehicle was not inspected to determine the cause of the air bag failure. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 70,000..updated 05-09-14 *bf

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda pilot. the contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph on wet pavement, the contact lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a embankment. the contact sustained injuries to the neck, shoulder and thumb which required medical attention. a police report was filed. the vehicle was destroyed. the insurance adjustor determined that the impact of the air bag caused the injuries. the vehicle was included in recall nhtsa campaign number: 14v351000 (air bags). the manufacturer was not notified. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was unavailable.

Airbag front impact sensors failed on 2005 honda pilot ex. there was a recall for this same issue on the 2005 honda odyssey. there should be a recall for this issue. how does a front airbag sensor go bad. this should have been handled by honda. a recall should be issued for this reason. i know several people with different model hondas that are having the same issue and are being charged hundreds of dollars. there is also a transmission problem with the pilot radiators that i will fill out another complaint for. thank you. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda pilot. the contact stated that while driving 75 mph, the contact crashed into the rear of another vehicle. the driver side front air bag did not deploy. the contact sustained injuries to the back, neck and right ankle. the vehicle was towed to the dealer but was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure and the current mileage was 150,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda pilot. while driving approximately 50 mph, the air bag warning indicator illuminated continuously. the failure recurred on several occasions. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was 32,731.

on or about october of 2011 i was driving my 2005 honda pilot when another vehicle cut in front of me and a collision occurred (t-bone). to by disbelief the airbag did not deploy. a few weeks later i asked an employee of a honda dealership about the airbag not deploying and he indicated to me that inside of the front bumper there is a gold ball and before the airbag can deploy it must have a direct center hit with another object. in my opinion the hit from the accident was about as direct as you can get it. i believe that there might be a defect of the airbag for not deploying. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda pilot. the contact stated while driving 48 mph the vehicle crashed into another vehicle head on and went into an embankment. none of the air bags deployed. the vehicle was destroyed as a result of the crash. the contact suffered injuries to the head, neck and shoulder. the front passenger also suffered injuries to the shoulder, neck, mouth, and face. the rear passenger suffered injuries to the head, leg, and broken ribs. all of the passengers were transported to the hospital. the contact did not call the manufacturer. the contact stated that if the air bags deployed several of the injuries could have been avoided. the failure mileage was 93,000.

Srs warning light goes on and stays on for days, then goes off and seems ok for a while. sometimes it comes on briefly and goes off. lately it has come on again and has not gone off for a couple of weeks straight. there has been no accident or airbag deployment in this vehicle. *tr
