Recently reported STRUCTURE problems on 2005 Honda Odyssey

We've had the left side sliding door on our 2005 honda odyssey fail to close numerous times over the past 3 years. the dealer has 'fixed' it at least four times in the past three years. most recently, while returning from a trip to florida, the door failed to close at a rest stop. in attempting to close the door manually, the 'sliding spring' broke and the door slipped off the track. we had to lift the door and slide it shut. when the spring broke, the weight of the door caused the sliding track to be dented outward. our fear is that the door can slide off the track and fall at any time since there's nothing to hold it in. we feel that this is a serious safety issue that should not be happening to any car much less a 3 year old vehicle. we contacted both honda and the dealer. we're being charged $95.00 for the dealer to diagnose the problem and may be charged the full cost of repairing the door. the dealer has indicated that in order to properly diagnose the problem, the door must be removed completely. this is a major repair that can run into several hundred dollars. neither honda or the dealer is offering to cover the cost of the repairs at this point despite their record of repeated repairs to this vehicle for the same problem. *tr

2005 honda odyssey. consumer states problems with door alarm *tgw the consumer stated the alarm sounded on two separate occasions. in both instances, there was no light on the display dashboard and the door was physically opened with wind noise. the first repair was not a success as the problem continued. when the consumer returned to the dealer a month later, it appeared the problem was fixed. the consumer stated three years later, the problem resurfaced again. while driving down the highway, the alarm began to sound with no dashboard display . when the consumer turned the steering wheel to the right, the door opened and the door display illuminated. the consumer had to manually close the door and lock it leaving the master switch off. *jb

There were no events leading to failure. failure of the rear door support strut was sudden. one of the strut failed immediately. upon research on internet, found that strut making sound most likely had a failed seal and inert gas had escaped. appeared similar to recall issue with toyota sienna's. honda mfg had no recall issue with the failure of the strut. upon contact with local honda distributor first honda in simi valley, because car had 37k miles it had gone beyond the 36k warranty for the vehicle. cost for material and labor to repair the strut was $170k material $110 and labor $60 approx. the actual repair work took 10 - 15 minutes. van is used to transport small children and the failure of the one, made owner- mom very difficult to put in and remove- strollers used and stored in back of vehicle. if failure had been while putting items in and out of the rear, the heavy weight of the door would have resulted in serious injury. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the rear trunk lift gate was defective and would shut without intent. when the trunk was opened, the consumers husband was struck in the head by the lift gate. the dealer repaired the lift gate at the owners expense. the contact was able to locate a recall on her year, make and model vehicle for the exact same failure (nhtsa campaign id numbers 10v055000 and 10v055000: structure: body: hatchback/lift gate and structure: body: hatchback/lift gate: support device); however, the dealer could not confirm the recall. the failure mileage was 43,000 and the current mileage was 95,000. updated 06/07/10*jb

My 2005 honda odyssey touring van needed new hatch struts. i have 42,000 miles on van. labor $44.78 - parts $130.80 - charge for preparing repair order $4.48 - tax $10.81. total cost $190.87. i told my friend who has a toyota sienna and he just received a letter from toyota telling him they have had problems with the hatch struts and have extended the warranty for five years, i think. if you have had the problem repaired already they will pay you back. i wonder if they use the same struts? good customer service from toyota. are you listening honda? *tr

Front grill is designed in a manner that objects can fly through and cause damage to interior parts. a/c condenser was damaged - appearance of a rock shot puncture. *tr

At the time of purchase i was forced to obtain an extended warranty, etching and many other things. one year later i began to have problems with the sliding doors. i informed honda because doors are covered under the extended warranty and the dealer refused to do any repairs. summer of 2014 there's a recall on the fuel pump and the dealership claims that because the doors are stuck closed they cannot repair the recall. however the service advisor opened the sliding doors and still then they refuse to complete the recall. i contacted honda's manufacturer and per the case manager at corporate office," honda cannot help me the recall." i recently learned that on september of 2011 there was an extended warranty on the steering. i informed the case manager that i never received such notice. her response was "perhaps the notice was mailed to the previous owner, because we go by the address noted at the dmv office."; september of 2011 the vehicle was registered under my name and address, the case manager did not have a response for me. fuel pump recall has not been repaired. *tr

My 3 year old son sits in a booster seat, driver's side, in the 2nd row seats of our 05 odyssey ex-l. this model has electric sliding doors on both sides. my son routinely opens and closes the door by pulling the handle after asking permission. on this occasion, he was seated in his seat and buckled in when he started the door closing. about 10 seconds later, as the door was completing it's latching, he started screaming at the top of his lungs. his left hand was caught at the back edge of the door between the weatherstrip and the door itself. i had to open the door with the dash mounted button to release his hand. upon examination by his mother and me, one of his fingers was scratched a bit and they hurt, but no indications of more serious injury, thanks to god. i've always been a bit concerned about the front of the door catching or pinching someone, but never really thought about the back of the door as it pulls in to latch. upon testing myself after this, it actually takes a fair amount of force back there to make the door reverse. a child's' fingers will be no match for it. i think honda (and probably others) needs to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of automatic doors on minivans. *tr

A strong vibration occurs when the transmission shifts from second to third gear. the driver must accelerate or decelerate to stop the rumpling. eventually the transmission fails. this happened to me and hundreds of other owners as evidenced by reports to edmunds. honda says it is normal. *tr

A whistle developed around the windshield. dealer said pillar molding needed to be replaced. replacements were installed at owners expense, but did not fix problem. dealer then said the cowl seemed to be warped. dealer replaced, this time at their expense, and fixed problem. said seal had come loose under cowl. *tr

2005 honda odyssey tailgate hinge failure. consumer states that the tailgate fell onto her while she was reaching into the back of the van. mechanic determined that the left tailgate support malfunctioned and replaced it. *kb

Rolling side doors - and rear hatch struts massive problems. bought car in jan 2006, new. in 2007 one of the side doors quit rolling. had to have the roller replaced - cost over $700. then a year later, the other side rolling door went out. then, the rear hatch struts totally gave way and the rear hatch came slamming down about 2 inches from my 7 year olds head. i called dealer - honda carland in roswell - they could care less. until i had to raised the roof with honda corporate before anybody would offer to cover the cost to replace struts. for certain, this would have been a serious injury to someone's head if it fell on them. after the hatch, then came the third sliding door problem, again i had to fix the door. so, three door fixes at over $700 each. now, in 2013 for the fourth time door is going out again. i am trading the car in before having it fixed. *tr

On 07/16/07 my wife drove about 65 miles to a dr. appointment. when she stopped smoke came from under the hood. she called me and i drove the 65 miles to check the van. the air conditioner was not working so i took the van to the dealer thinking a warranty repair. they told me a object hit the air conditioner coil in front of the radiator and this was not covered under warranty. it cost me $720.35. they advised me to order a aftermarket billite grill from e bay and this will keep this from happening again. i did and this cost me $104.00. i did a search in the internet and found this is happening to a lot of people in all areas of the country. seems there is poor designing for this area of the van allowing objects to damage the vehicle's parts. please investigate this problem. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. the vehicle was at the dealer being serviced. when the contact arrived to pick up the vehicle, she was informed that the sunroof was rotting. the dealer stated that it appeared as if rodents had chewed on it and that the repair would not be covered under warranty. the powertrain was unknown. the current and failure mileages were 22,178.

I am the original owner of the 2005 honda odyssey with about 15 k miles. in june we noticed loss of the ac system. upon a visit to local honda dealer i was told that a rock/road debris punctured the ac condenser and the repair estimate runs about $ 700.00. in a process of calling 5 other local honda dealers trying to get a better pricing, i learned that my case is not that rare as it may sound. i was told that on average they replace about 2-3 ac condensers a month. then i checked the internet and found much more odyssey's owner with identical stories. my issue is that 2005-2007 odyssey has a design flaw - too big opening under the bumper that allows any road debris to penetrate ac condenser and/or radiator. i am firm believer that honda acknowledges that problem because 2008 odyssey has a very nice, factory installed screen mesh under the bumper without any significant body upgrades for that year model. i called the regional honda customer service center but they denied any responsibility. *tr

Tl*- the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. the front passenger wont open from the inside when the door handle was engaged. the dealer informed the contact that the inside cable was disconnected. there was a recall for this problem in may of 2006. the dealer repaired the front door inner handle cable. the problem recurred on the front passenger door. the contact felt the dealer should correct the problem without cost to him because it was a recurring problem. the current mileage was 50000.*ak

2005 defective honda odyssey spoiler customer states that the spoiler had a defective design because ice and snow accumulated under it causing it to become loose**cc the consumer stated while driving down the highway, the spoiler became detached from the vehicle along with the brake light and fell onto the road. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 30 mph on normal road conditions, the front of the vehicle shook when the brakes were applied. no warning signal illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealership who determined the front wheel pads were worn out and the two front rotors were machined. after 4000 miles, the problem recurred and the dealership determined the front wheels brake pads were worn out and replaced them again. the problem persisted and the front shaking was noticed nine times. the manufacturer was contacted who opened a case with the commitment of calling back promptly which has not happened. there was a wind noise coming from the windshield and the left sliding door. the rear seat belt was ripped. updated 11/14/06. *jb

Welds between the rear driver's side wheel well and the vehicle floor failed/cracked resulting in water leaking into the van at this site. dealer service department attempted to repair this 3 times without success. they determined the welds were cracked and rewelded this seam. it is not known if this solved the problem as the van has not been driven in the rain since the last repair.

Liftgate suddenly dropped closed. difficult to subsequently open- very heavy, and would not stay in open position. fluid from strut mechanism leaking. serious injury could have occurred if anyone was standing under the liftgate. the liftgate is very heavy. mechanisms replaced by dealer. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while making u-turns, at 5 mph, a noise was heard coming from underneath the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the brake clip on the passenger front was replaced. the noise persisted and the dealer replaced the steering pump on a second visit. the replacement of the steering pump did not remedy the problem and the vehicle has not been returned to the dealer for further inspection. the driver side door did not close properly, the right side door seal was broke. updated 05/23/06. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while driving the passenger sliding door moves and rattles. the vehicle was taken to the dealership for inspection. they replaced the door trim, window regulator and adjusted the door however the problem still exists. the manufacturer was alerted.

Windshield wind noises.. noises started 7 months and 9900 miles after possession of vehicle. starting hearing whistling noise when drive vehicle @ low speeds on windy days. took vehicle into the shop and they replaced both moldings and adjusted fender. took vehicle back into the shop a month later with same problem. they preformed bulletin #04-078. drove vehicle additional 2000 miles and wind noise started again. this time i had other dealership in town try to fix windshield. picked up vehicle and drove it out of town and rt. windshield moldings came loose. pulled over and noticed that dealership had scratched and dented fender and windshield post. pulled back the loose and flapping moldings and noticed that they had shoved a red shop towel in the fender/windshield area to stop the noise. **is this proper procedures in the repair manuel** shoving red shop rags in the fenders to stop wind noise?? what to do now - fender and windshield post and quarter needs to be repainted - i now have lost value on vehicle because vehicle will be painted and windshield molding is held on by duck tape. --fyi, windshield moldings are only held in with double sided tape clips - double sided tape will only hold for a couple of years, before they deter ate and they will need to be replaced.. factory did not think of the longevity of the windshield moldings. many, many more people will continuously have problems with wind noise. *nm

Driving home after having vehicle detailed passenger rear door would snap back out of the latch wouldn't stay completely closed beeps when in drive runs battery down won't always open or shut suddenly started working properly year later had car detailed door wouldn't work replaced a fuse next year had it detailed messed up started working messed up off and on took it in may of 2009 replaced closer motor nov 2009 took it for detailing neither door worked replaced the junction box has messed up off and on since then beeps when in gear runs battery down unlatches on its own will be okay for a while then acts up again acting up more than fixed since nov 2009. *tr

Drivers side rear passenger 'power sliding door' (psd) failed to close, requiring wife and children to drive to garage with open door, and door alarm sounding. door closed normally at garage, and neither that mechanic nor the honda dealer could find any problem with door. problem repeated sporadically through the years, and dealer could never resolve problem. i discovered that i could manually assist the door to close and, with several tries, get it closed. because of the hazards in having to drive to a mechanic with children and an open passenger door & screaming alarm, our solution has been to never open that door, but occasionally a passenger has unknowingly opened it, causing difficulty closing it. over the years i've observed that this failure happens whenever the vehicle is parked on a noticeable incline. i suggested to the honda service manager that some mechanical part may be loose, causing binding in the track, but he always reported that everything about the mechanism was "fine". i discovered today that nhtsa action number 10016777 and honda service bulletin number 204110 were issued in 2005, relating to this problem. the honda dealer was, or should have been, aware of the defect each time i returned to them to fix it under warranty. i believe this flaw should be recalled for repair: there is a genuine safety hazard to a vehicle full of children when having to drive to a garage when a door refuses to close. *tr

Lower sliding door seals. had vehicle for 6 months and 8200 miles later and i am starting to have problems with doors dragging and lower seals not staying under scuff plate. took vehicle in later oct. of 05' to lube doors. then had to take vehicle back a month later to have seal replaced, because sliding door kept hitting lower seals causing door not to shut and wife having to drive home with door open and kids in the vehicle. now, it appears that seals are starting to come off again. *nm

The rubber seal at the bottom of the passenger door is coming loose. when the rubber pulls away, it leaves a rigid aluminum that has hurt my 2 and 3 year old when they are getting out of the van. *nm

Load wind noise from both front doors, sticking of automatic sliding doors and faulty weather stripping both sliding doors. multiple trips to dealer. both front doors mounted incorrectly resulting in improper seal. mechanism for both sliding doors replaced due to faulty parts. weather stripping replaced lower part of both sliders replaced and already starting to fail again-pulling away from base board. after many trips to dealer door issues repaired and the van is finally quiet again. *jb

Tailgate closed unexpectedly while i was standing underneath while loading groceries. 1.) there was no warning that this was going to happen. until this point the tailgate had functioned normally in the manual or automatic open/close mode. 2.) after the tailgate fell it never worked again until i made repairs to the hold open strut. 3.) i checked the struts and found that the drivers side strut had failed. the strut had no pressure left inside to push out the rod that holds the tailgate open. the passenger side strut was ok and i did not replace this. i purchased a replacement strut from my honda dealer. when i called to see if a part was in stock the person in the parts department asked me if the vehicle was a "touring model", which it is. *tr

I bought a new 2005 honda odyssey ex-l and drove it on only 2 occasions. the first time i drove it, i had the windows behind the front seats down and not only was the noise level extremely high, but it created some kind of vibration or pressure change which caused extreme pain to my ear drums. about 2 weeks later, i drove it again, tried all combinations of rolling down windows but as long as the back ones were down, the vibration/pressure to my ears was intolerable. i had throbbing in my ears for several days and it finally led to an ear infection. i brought this to the attention of darling's honda (the dealership in bangor, maine) and to american honda. the dealership has tried for 3 months to try to find an alternate vehicle for me. however, american honda said they would do nothing and the vehicle design is not defective, even though i have heard similar complaints from others. apparently ruptured or perforated ear drums are not considered a hazard to the honda company. i now have a new car i cannot use unless it is too cold to roll down the windows, or so warm that the a/c is the only alternative, because it is a hazard to my health. *jb

The passenger automatic sliding door by pressing the open button on console and keyless the automatic sliding door opened about 6 inches then reclosed with a loud pop sound and my two and half year old sons hand almost got compress by the automatic sliding door.

Dt: the contact stated the air bag sensor light stayed on. she received a nhtsa recall 05v344000 concerning the air bag sensor. the dealership replaced the air bag sensor, but the light was still on. *ak updated 12/11/2005. a hole in the under side of the bumper allowed small rocks and peddles in the bumper. the weather stripping on the rear doors is pulling away and bending outward. *nm

The consumer is experiencing a loud noise and shaking while the windows are open at 40 miles per hour. there is tremendous air pressure inside, which is making the owner have ear pain distracting him from the road when driving. owner has contacted manufacturer. *jb air pressure abrupt changes when windows open is a jolt to driver. *eh

I purchased a 2005 honda odessey. i requested a moon roof as a honda option. i was not told that this was not an option on the model that i had selected. i was given an after market moon roof. i went back to the dealer to have an over head dvd player installed and i was told that the main overhead beam was cut to install the moon roof and that what was left of the beam was not strong enough to hold the dvd player. i began to question the quality of work that was done to install the moon roof and i was then told it was after market. i asked the dealer and honda to certify that the installation was safe. they both refused. i have since explained my concerns about the safety of the vehicle especially in turn over situations. honda and the dealership has refused to do anything. i am very concern about the installation and i want honda to take back the vehicle since i bought honda but i was sold a honda vehicle with an after market moon roof. not only this but i don't have a honda warranty on the moonroof. the only warranty i have is with the dealership. i am currently pregnant and i already have 2 children. the minivan is a vehicle for my family. i don't think the mini van is safe in case of a crash or roll over. i say this because if the beam is not strong enough to hold a dvd player then in case of a roll over or crash the roof will come in on me and my children. *ak *bf *nm
