Honda odyssey 2005 just as the extended warranty expired, the transmission started to hesitate when slowly accelerating from 3rd to 4th gear. honda dealer said replacement for rebuilt (2 years garanti) for $3000. *tr

The car shutters around 40 - 50 mph as well as on inclines. i'm amazed at how many complaints there are about this and how common the defect is that the two places i called after being told by the honda dealer that i needed a $2200 torque converter put in knew immediately what i was talking about. the 05 odyssey's are notorious for this problem. i'm surprised that honda has let this go without a recall. *tr

My 2005 honda odyssey shudders at speeds between 30 and 45. i was told i need to replace my torque converter. through various research, i have begun to see that this is a common problem - there was a safety bulletin (09-053) published for the 07 and 08 model. *tr

While casually accelerating from a stop, the transmission will start shuttering somewhere between 15 and 35 miles per hour. in order to get the transmission to stop shuttering, i must press down harder on the accelerator to get the van to shift to a higher gear. *tr

I have 2005 honda odyssey. it has transmission problem, whenever it shift gear at low speed around 40 mph, it has judder problem. it have been told by the honda dealership that it will need software updates, so they did that. it does not work though, it is just getting worst. this is a safety issue, i have seen a lot of people having the same transmission problem. the honda dealership suggest changing the torque converter/replace the whole transmission. that will be very costly. i am hoping you can investigate this failure and stop the foreseeable accidents. this is a defect in honda's transmission design, not because of wear and tear. the problem started at around 95k miles and the dealership always suggests different solutions that leads to no fix. the problem gets worst and not they suggest replacing torque converter. *tr

We purchased our 2005 honda odyssey on june 16th, 2010. during the test drive as well as for a week or so after purchasing the vehicle, no problems were noticed. however about 2 weeks after purchasing the vehicle, we started to notice the vehicle would shudder around 40-45 miles an hour, usually on an incline. we took this vehicle on a long trip and the shuddering started to get worse. on july 19, 2010, we took the vehicle in for service. on wednesday, july 21st, the dealership called to inform me that they had installed a software upgrade for this problem, but it didn't fix it. their recommendation was either a torque converter or a new transmission. the tech who worked on my car said they could just replace the torque converter and would probably not have any more problems; however, honda's recommendation was to replace the transmission. they were waiting on the extended warranty co. to call and see if this was covered. luckily, on thursday, july 22nd, the warranty co. sent someone out to decide if they would cover it. the warranty co. decided to replace the entire transmission of my month old car to the tune of $3700. on friday, july 23rd, i finally got my vehicle back. however, unfortunately, it is returning to the dealership due to the fact that it veers to the right. *tr

Our 2005 honda odyssey ex-l dvd nav is experiencing the same "shutter" issues being reported by numerous other owners. as speeds between 20-40 mph, the vehicle will stutter or shutter, specifically on inclines. this appears to be a very common, and expensive problem with honda. we took it to the local dealership and they charged $50 for a transmission update. same issue, so now they have advised that we need a new transmission at $3,000-$4,000. are you kidding me? i placed a call to a friend that owns a transmission shop 3 hours away and was stunned to find that they have to rebuild the transmission on this style honda odyssey 3-4 times a month. pay a premium price and get ripped off by a company you think you can trust. this can cause serious accidents on our highways. *tr

I have a 2005 honda odyssey touring. there is a strong shuddering and shake when i reach the speeds of 20-30 mph. this also happens when the eco mode engages. i have also noticed that i am not getting the same fuel economy with this issue. i am hesitant to call honda with my vin. for the fact of them deleting any recall or problems with my van. after reading many articles about honda owners experiencing the same issues as mine. my only question to nhtsa. what are you waiting for to make honda be held responsible for this serious problem. perhaps honda is paying you off to ignore the problem exist. i have been contacted by honda dealerships wanting to purchase my van. i do not have my van listed for sell or have i thought about selling it. how is it they are able to get my address and phone number? this leads me to believe that honda knows that this problem exist. if they can get owners such as myself for fall for there game plan. the dealer is going to get issue fixed at no charge to them. then sell the van for much more than they are offering me. even when i told them no! they continued to call me asking if i would reconsider the offer of selling the van. is this just coincidence of a cover up by honda or the demand for these vans is high. hummmm! *tr

2005 honda odyssey touring van this problem started a while ago when the van gets to a steady speed of aprox 40 usually at a slight incline the car starts to jitter or feel like going over railroad tracks. now it is happening at other speeds. i was told it was a cracked block months ago and had it replaced. this did not fix the problem. now being told torque converter will fix the problem @$1900. called honda usa they said the will not consider reviewing my claim because of my mileage is now 100,000. others on web are having similar problems..my best guess is that we have been having this problem for 15-20,000 miles. *tr

Honda odyssey 2005 transmission gear & bearing failure whistle sound recommended by dealer to replace transmission. consult transmission specialist aaa approved also confirmed transmission problem. dealer offered $3,000.00 on 20/80 split 20% american honda share. have the same problem with my 2002 honda odyssey transmission have to pay 50% of cost. around $ 1,500.00. no decision yet on this 2005 odyssey because of cost. *tr

Original owner of 2005 honda odyssey van. around 60,000 miles and while still under the honda care warranty, the car began to shudder at 20-40 mph speeds when shifting gears. similar to the multiple complaints about torque converter and transmissions. this is scary and i know not what could happen when transmission decides to let go completely. local honda dealer checked the vehicle two times before the warranty ran out (july of 2010) and "couldn't duplicate the problem when they drove it." absent a recall by honda to correct this deficiency, the reported problems will continue to grow until someone gets hurt. i feel they should recall the vehicle and fix the transmission when it was reported to them multiple times while still under warranty. *tr

I have a 2005 honda odyssey exl and it has a severe vibration when operating in the eco mode. research online shows the known cause is premature failure of the rear engine mount. there are literally thousands of forums and complaints for the identical problem. honda has not issued a recall and the repair cost is $650. *tr

I have a 2005 honda odyssey with 80000 miles on it and the transmission is shuddering. honda said it would cost $2,000-2,500 to fix because it is possibly a torque problem. per ody blogs many other ody owners experiencing same problem. honda will not acknowledge problem. *tr

2005 honda odyssey has defective transmissions which honda needs to replace before someone is killed. the automatic transmission jerks the vehicle forward at speeds of 20-45 mph. this is dangerous as you could be driving slowly at 15-20mph in school zone and the transmission judders and jerks the vehicle forward. honda is making customers spend $'s to perform transmission fluid flushes, have dealership do software updates and change torque converters. none of these will work. please investigate before valuable lives are lost like with the toyota incident. honda does not want to issue a formal transmission recall because it would cost them hundreds of millions to replace transmissions. the us government has a duty to investigate this problem thoroughly before someone gets hurt. *tr

We have a 2005 honda odyssey with 8800.00 miles on it and the transmission is shuddering. honda said 4200.00 please. van just paid off. honda will not step up to the plate and say they have a problem with there vans.

Rebuild transmission due to worn out differential bearings that caused the transmission fluids to break the axel seal and leak a lot of fluid which could of destroyed transmission all together.

Vehicle vibrates while driving at low speed and engine rpm. *tr

Judder in transmission, going up incline at about 32mph, 1500rpm, especially when cold. vehicle at 65,000 miles. *tr

Between 35-40 miles per hour transmission is slipping. van is 4.5 years old with 53,000 miles. dealer says torque converter needs to be replaced at an out of pocket expense of $3400. this is on a 2005 honda odyssey ex-l with navigation. *tr

When the car reaches a speed of 30-40 miles an hour the eco gear kicks in causing the car to vibrate and shake under the car in the transmission area. i have been told by the dealer that it was motor mounts, torque converter, wheel alignment, etc. i have found a class action suit that was filed in california. i want to be add to that lawsuit if possible. *tr

At around 85,000 miles our 2005 odyssey started exhibiting a transmission shudder in the 30-40 mph range. i talked with the dealer about it, and they mentioned it would require the torque converter being replaced. however, they offered a much cheaper possible fix to the problem of replacing all the transmission fluid (cost about $200). that seems to have temporarily fixed the problem. i had the flush done again after 15,000 miles. hopefully, this will be the only fix needed. *tr

2005 honda odyssey touring model, purchased new from dealer, original owner, strictly maintained. when driving in 5th gear, 40-45mph, 1100-1200 rpm if i start up an incline where transmission should downshift, severe vibration begins. like driving over rumble strips. ease off accelerator or increase acceleration to increase rpm and vibration stops. started at approximately 40k very infrequently. now at 53k happens more frequently. dealer has looked at car on 2 different occasions but can not find problem. *tr

This behavior happened a few times in the past according to my wife. the last time happened on 1/30/09 while i was driving on a city street under normal speed and suddenly the transmission lost power, the d drive failed to engage. i immediately move the gear shift several time to re-engage the d gear. very unsafe, unpredictable and scare in a busy street. *tr

2005 honda odyssey ' accelerating from 30-35 and/or 40-45 mph, the van shudders during the transmission shift. went on-line and found others with 2005+ odysseys with the same issue. most complaints seem to point to the transmission. took my van to a local dealer ' they reprogrammed the fuel injector. did not resolve the issue. for my van, this has been happening for over a year. *tr

Severe vibration, thumping, washboard affect in right front when driving over 20mph. replaced right front drive axel. *tr

2005 honda odyssey minivan with approximately 68000 miles. transmission is slipping when van is going slightly uphill while engine speed is between 1500 and 2000 rpm. problem will go away if manually downshift or press hard on the gas paddle to force the transmission to downshift. dealership insisted that the transmission needs to be replaced to eliminate the problem but honda is not willing to absorb the replacement cost. *tr

I purchased my vehicle new and vigilantly maintain it. with fewer than 43,000 miles, the automatic transmission fails to properly "lockup" at 45 mph on level grade when warm. the dealers scan tool indicated absence of any detected abnormality, but their test drive confirmed the symptom--pulsing power to the drive wheels. they told me the torque converter is failing which they don't replace nor repair so they said it needs a new transmission. they said it was ok to drive. they never acknowledged a history of transmission problems nor any related service campaigns or technical service bulletins. i am, like i said, vigilant about service, so i will take care of this before it becomes an issue, but others may be at risk if the transmission fails rapidly due to improper design. *tr

Whining sound and shuddering at certain speeds, generally 30-40 mph. believe it is transmission related. *tr

Have had a few problems since purchased van new. first problem around "08 is a vibrating-shuddering felt in steering wheel. at about 35- 45 mph and just before the "econo" would kick in, i would feel the vibrating start. if i increase my speed quickly and get on up to about 50mph, it would stop. thought it needed a tune-up..did that-still vibrated. thought it was transmission-had it flushed-still vibrated. it wasn't a constant problem back in "08, but irritating.now in 2013 it is many times a day and shudders very badly. took it to honda dealer today about the escalated vibrations. test drove it and said vibrations were from torque converter and needed to replace transmission.also needed timing belt replaced. i did'nt expect to hear transmission-expected to hear rear motor mount(600.00) needed replacing. i specifically took my van in to check the motor mount.when he said torque converter/transmission i asked him what the motor mounts looked like. he said the tech did'nt mention that .no one likes to hear they are about to inccur some expensive repairs, but i did'nt expect to hear transmission replacement at 170,000 miles.the fellow at the dealership stated that"heck, that is really good for the 2005 odyssey".our nissan truck had over 300,000 miles and our dodge duelly has over 200,000 miles neither with transmission issues.so, this issue still remains unrepaired-waiting on estimate from dealership. yikes! the passenger sliding door has not operated correctly for 3-4 years now. it does'nt close all the way. if you open the sliding door, when you close it itwill beep like its not closed.you have to get out and manually slam it shut. they said it may be the motor...too much to fix it..so we just don't use it.recently while pulling into parking spaces,i hear a whinning sound and steering is more difficult. *tr

My 2005 honda odyssey has a transmission shudder due to the faulty torque converter that honda put into this vehicle. thee are thousands of complaints on this issue and honda ignores its customers and provides no recall for this problem. *tr

A strong vibration occurs when the transmission shifts from second to third gear. the driver must accelerate or decelerate to stop the rumpling. eventually the transmission fails. this happened to me and hundreds of other owners as evidenced by reports to edmunds. honda says it is normal. *tr

Honda odyssey shudders when shifting gears between 20 and 40 mph. this has been happening for 2+ years and am now told that transmission is in danger. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the transmission emitted a grinding noise while driving at various speeds over 5 mph. the contact also stated that the vehicle would not shift gears. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on several occasions, but the contact was informed that the vehicle was operating as intended. the vehicle was eventually taken to an independent repair shop and the contact was advised to replace the transmission. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 47,000. updated 04/26/12*lj

I drove my van up to the goat pen. put the van in park, left it running walked in front of the van and crossed over to the gate. i stood in front of the goat pen for a couple of minutes. van started moving forward- hit a tree. thank god i was not in front of it. *tr

While the car was idling and the transmission was in park, the van rolled down the street with my kids still inside the van. eventually, the van hit a parked car and the van stopped. the parking brake was not on. i took the vehicle to the honda dealership and they could not replicate the failure. *jb

2005 odyssey mini van. oil leak at under 24000 miles. transmission replaced. then 7/08 had another oil leak just after it had express service at honda dealership. took back they said that something did not get put on tight enough. took back two weeks or so later, around 32000 miles now still leaking. replaced oil pan and gasket. still leaking. took back told it was transmission. they started to order one. honda had me come back in to take pictures. my service rep was not there at that time. at this time said it was engine oil not trans. went back when my service rep was in. she found leak and it was the transmission. another trans was put in around jan 6th 2009 at around 38,500 miles. i was told this is not normal. but there seems to many complaints on transmissions on the honda vans. *tr

We first noticed a severe vibration in our car about two months ago when traveling between 65-70 mph. took honda ody to dealer to have them review. suggested we rotate and balance tires (as we have done with nearly each oil change). car had 20k miles. we did as suggested but vibration continued. we drove the car to south florida (8 hours of driving) and the vibration seemed to worsen. went to different local honda dealer to have them look at it. they suggested another balance and alignment. we said ok (another $150) and they said their tech drove it and it was gone. great - took the car home and experienced it again on my test loop home. called second dealer again who took car in. first they looked at the pax system and said we need new tires and that should fix it. they then put new tires on from a new ody on their lot. did not resolve it. now they feel it is the front axles that are defective and still have the car. hopefully this will fix the problems but not from what i have read from other consumers of the 2005 honda ody... i feel all this will recur. so, two problems. the pax system touted for safety and longevity has almost bald side edges of each tire at 22k miles now. is this safe for my family? now i need to replace them for $1k. second issue is faulty axles that are worn at 22k miles. wow. seems to be some serious safety and design defects in this $40k vehicle that would not be accepted on a $20k car. *jb

Transmission makes vibrating noise about 45 mph when accelerating on slight uphill grade. van taken to dealer shop for investigation. i was told that all checks were within honda spec. i was informed that it probably always did this and that i just didn't notice it. *jb

I am a member of the 05' honda odyssey growling club. i started having a vibration - growling noise in the driveline @ 60 to 70 mph and @ 2000 rpm. this started 7 months after ownership and 9900 miles later. i have also noticed on the forums that may other complaints on this same item - i have taken into shop three times and both dealerships state that all the noises are normal. sound appears to get louder - is that normal?? *nm

Dt: the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. the vehicle was purchased on july 25, 2005. he stated that with only 750 miles on the vehicle the automatic transmission needed to be replaced. three people from the dealership did an investigation ,two people confirmed the failure and one did not. the vehicle was making a sound while driving at 70 mph, it like a very loud humming noise. he heard the noise the day before the vehicle was taken to the dealership at 40 mph, and this was the first time he had heard the noise at a low speed. it occurred more traveling up or down a hill or when you put stress on the engine. the dealership did some additional testing and did not hear the noise the first time. they did not hear it the second time. the third time they did hear the noise. after the additional testing they found that the transmission needed to be replaced. there was one other complaints filed with the nhtsa on the automatic transmission. initially, this vehicle would do this sound more often at higher speeds. but sometimes it occurred at lower speeds as well. *ak

The consumer is experiencing problems with the transmission. when the vehicle is going 45 mph or greater the rpm's drops down to about 1400 rpm's. when shifting into over drive. the engine begins to vibrates and will continue up to 55 mph. when accelerating above 55 mph the problem disappears. owner has taken the vehicle to the dealer and has also contacted the manufacturer. neither has a solution to this problem. provide further details. *jb
