We have classified the 50 complaints from 2005 Honda Odyssey about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
We are the only owner of the van bought brand new from a honda dealer. at approximately 145k miles the engine light came on. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a second opinion who diagnosed that the torque converter needed to be replaced. the local dealers wanted a small fortune to repair it, more than the car was worth it. i learned that it is a typical problem with those honda odysseys. the car has been repaired though.
The vehicle starts shaking during lower speed limits. it seems to stop once the vehicle goes faster past the lower gears.
While driving, the transmission would shake the whole vehicle and i have to reduce the gas and then accelerate again to end the shakening.now, the transmission makes a grinding noise and shakes worst
We have owned out dark blue 2005 honda odyssey for approximately 5 years. recently, i am finding that the paint along the roof and side/front trim panels is chipping away. i have attempted to sand some of the bed spots and paint /protect again, but it is no use. the problem seems to be with the base layer below the blue paint. i have seen where this was identified, but i do not know where to go for more information on this defect the second area of concern is in the wiring for the radio and temperature control. there seems to be a loose wire or connection behind the panels. the back-lights for the radio and temperature control will turn on or off with no warning or indication as to why. the systems themselves work fine, it's only the visible lights that flicker, or turn off and on with no pattern. my fear is that it is an electrical problem that may cause a fire if the crossing of wires or shorting continues. this will happen when driving, sitting still, car off (power on), there is no common flag or trigger that would point to a problem. and all functions work (even when lights are off). also, the car just started to vibrate when acceleration between 55-65. my mechanic stated that this may be due to faulty axles or possibly the transmission, both of which have open issues with honda and to check with you first. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda oddysey. while driving up an incline at 40 mph, the vehicle stalled. it was diagnosed that the vehicle needed a new transmission. the vehicle was not repaired. the approxmate failure mileage was 144,400.
I am the original owner of a 2005 honda odyssey. in 2014, while driving up hill on the grapevine in gorman, ca i hit the gas to accelerate, but nothing happened. the speedometer did not move. it was stuck on 40mps. i tried pushing on the gas, but that did nothing. it was as if the transmission was just not working. i started to loose power as was able to pull over by divine intervention. thank you aaa for towing me to scott robinsons honda- torrance, ca. after all of this and they said it was a speed sensor that needed to be replaced. the dealership said that is what it was, so that is what it has to be. they never make mistakes. on june 22, 2016 going up hill, and trying to accelerate to pick up speed, the speedometer would not move. pushing on the gas did nothing. i continued to move until the hill became to steep, and the car just stopped. starting to roll backwards, i hit the brakes and held on for deal life. once again aaa had to tow my car to honda. well, guess what they said this time. you need a new transmission. yes, that is what they said this 2nd time. at 140k miles, i need a new transmission, and it is going to cost me $6,000. wft! my 1997 ford windstar is still going strong with 250k miles. i have tried to contact honda, but i am getting nowhere. no return calls, no communication nothing. i will never buy honda anything again. *tr
Travel at high speed iaw speed limits and traffic flow, noticed surging (like slipping) from transmission, noticed drive indicator blinking, engine revs surging with transmission surges. i hope to make nearest safe area to pull over (rest plaza less than 7 miles away) got 4 miles. had reduced speed to relieve stress on transmission and engine. speed continued to reduce suddenly to below 45 mph before i was able to find safe location to pull over. transmision locked into drive position could not shift to any gear. no grinding sounds were ever heard. i was by myself but this could have happened to anyone. could lead to death from being hit from rear by another car or truck as transmission's rapid rate of deceleration cause by its failure. looked up blinking transmission indicator and did not find any warning or notification as to possible cause. found out that honda odessesy's transmission has history of catistrophic failure if not serviced every 35k (varies according to complaint). again no wqarning of this possible event mentioned in owner's manuel. since i bought the car used i had no knowledge of this problem or its service record. i did have it serviced shortly after buying it but again had no warning. ironically, i'm an automotive reliability/safety manager by profession.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. while driving approximately 30 mph, the brake pedal was depressed but the vehicle did not stop. the contact had to turn the ignition to the off position in order to stop the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the brakes and transmission failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure and the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 10v504000 (service brakes, hydraulic). the approximate failure mileage was 135,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. the contact stated that there was a random failure that progressed concerning the power steering. the vehicle shook excessively each time the failure occurred. the vehicle performed extensive diagnostic testing, but was unable to provide a specific remedy to prevent the failure. in addition, the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a second opinion who diagnosed that the torque converter needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failures and provided no specific recommended repair solution to the dealer. the approximate failure mileage was 126,607.
Complete transmission failure due to internal heat build-up and gear disintegration. *tr
Bought our 2nd odyssey in may 2014. used. 153000miles. took to honda dealer to make sure all service was up to date. oil and transmission fluid changed. they said everything was good despite a shudder we felt at 40 45 mph. driving in july on a 12 hr family trip and we hear a high pitched whine only upon acceleration. the transmission failed. left us stranded 14 hrs from home. had to borrow a van from a family member to get all 7 of us home again. the car is now in the shop , needing a $2200. repair. not happy with honda!! the 2000 odyssey has had 3 transmissions put in, the 1st tranny was recalled by honda and replaced at no cost @ 80k. the 2nd tranny we paid for and failed at 180k. thought the 2005 model had the tranny problem fixed. apparently not! buyer beware! we will never purchase another honda. *tr
Our 2005 honda odyssey had a transmission failure on the way out of town from georgia to florida over the 4th of july weekend. on wednesday we just had an o2 sensor and recall work (master cylinder & one other issue) completed at a honda dealer in georgia. i then took it down the street to get two new tires put on the vehicle at a tire service center. they checked the vehicle out for travel, gave us the green light and bam! by 6pm the following day the transmission solenoids were both reported failed: p0746 pressure control solenoid "a" performance/stuck off p0777 pressure control solenoid "b" stuck on p0741 torque converter clutch circuit performance/stuck off we hobbled into panama city, where i booked a car rental from the airport. the dealer immediately assessed the issues as a transmission failure. we have returned to atlanta on a 14 day car rental scrambling to find a new car. the quote for replacing the transmission is $3k. this is prohibitive on a 2005. honda corporation refused a goodwill assistance request. case number available upon request. at that point i will has spent $3.2k on the car, $400 in car rentals (in georgia while service was being performed, and florida to get home). my guess is if i don't fix the transmission there will be no trade-in value for the vehicle. it's got bumper, interior and fender damage, so there isn't much hope even if i do go forward with the replacement. also, the alpharetta service center said the transmission fluid looked fine, and honda in pc said it was burnt. there explanation was a part failure in the transmissions burned the fluid. it would have been nice to have an early warning of a catastrophic failure before a 330 mile road trip. *tr updated 02/26/2015 *js
The transmission has been whining since 75000k. it failed completely at 142000 miles. here's what finally killed it, i was making a u turn in a parking lot at my kid's school. i had to have it towed back to the house. this transmission has been a total liability for me and my family. now we're in a major pickle. *tr
The vehicle started to redline. the speedometer quit working. the check engine light came on. the d light started blinking. no power was going to the wheels. we pulled over, came to a stop, and shut of the engine. there was smoke. *tr
Cruising at highway speeds, vehicle suddenly lost acceleration. added gas increased engine rpm and finally, smoke appeared and the vehicle was pulled over. was towed to the nearest shop and told that the transmission fluid blew out of itself but could not identify the leak. shop refilled transmission fluid and sent us on our way. 10 miles down the road, it happened again and this time i didn't rev the engine hard and pulled over to find that the car will not shift, either drive, or reverse. smell of burning transmission fluid. towed again to the local transmission shop and was told that the transmission is in need of a rebuild. cost is upwards of $2500. we cannot afford a rebuilt transmission especially after paying out taxes and being affected by sandy just before. honda is not helping, was told that there are no known issues with your model year and transmission. i kept insisting that there are many forums out there that say otherwise but honda will not admit the fact that their transmissions are flawed. the 2006 class action does not affect my year so let's hope more people out there will be able to persuade for another case. *tt
The transmission on my 2005 honda odyssey has to replaced and honda is claiming that is normal for a transmission to go at 100000 miles. the car drives fine for short distances but then after long distances it goes 5 miles an hour and revs really high. it was towed to honda where they told me nothing was wrong. i asked them to drain the fluid and replace it. they did that then drove it around and drained it again and it was dirty and burning. they are putting in a refurbished transmission with an extended warranty. i feel that with a honda the transmission should last a lot longer and think this is a honda issue. *tr
My wife had a doctor's appointment and was waiting in the office. she has parked the car in parking lot. after sometime all of a sudden car's alarm went off. all from doctor's office rushed out to parking lot to see what happened. she noticed some smoke coming out under the hood. and within seconds car caught fire and burnt. whole front of the car burnt completely. insurance company has called it a total loss. i'm still puzzled to figure it out why this has happened. car was parked and engine was off. car was maintained as per the honda's guidelines. there were no problems or warning signs what so ever. it was running perfectly fine. had only 76000 miles on it. and strongly believe many years of driving left in it. we were pleased with the performance of it over the years. i'd ask nhtsa to look in to the incidence and have honda contact me and reimburse for our loss which is not at all our fault. *tr
On grade or when accelerating slowly between 25-30 mph the vehicle shakes violently. this seams to be a common issue, and still no recalls have been made. many say it is caused by a faulty torque converter on models from 05-08. *tr
Where do i start....original owner, purchased brand new. no problems for about 3-4 years, and then: transmission whine, took in to dealer off and on for several years, could never identify issue, they said. but as soon as the drivetrain warranty expired, miraculously, they identified it, and now say i need a new transmission. motor mounts found to have cracked; problem is very common per internet forums, but honda dealership denies responsibility for poor design/faulty mounts. door for second row has issues sliding; another common problem per internet but not per dealer. and finally, the struts for the rear hatch broke, almost injuring my son very badly when he was putting his bike in the back. took the car to the dealer and asked about a recall and they said no. i paid $300 4 months ago, and just now found that there was a recall 3 years ago, and they denied it!!!!! i hate honda and will never buy their cars, and do not trust the dealership. ughhh!!!! *tr
Power steering does not work well at low speeds (i.e. parking and turning corners). vehicle is hard to turn and could result in crash. also, rear motor has failed, which could result in undesirable shifting of transmission. *tr
Transmission trouble happens when first started in the morning. has shifting problems at every speed. will never go into top gear until vehicle has warmed up, is turned off, and turned back on. then shifts normally. replacing with new ecm (engine control module) did not fix. was told to replace the mounts too, did not fix either. *tr
I purchase this vehicle new from dealer with minimal problems until about 85,000 mile when my wife was driving the vehicle on the highway at 65 mph the vehicle started to shake uncontrollably and she was barely able to get to the shoulder of the road. i drove the vehicle for two day and could not replicate this problem i had the tires balanced to ensure that this was not the issue. my sister-in-law drove the car and the problem happened again to her, she was very concerned because of the way the vehicle shakes uncontrollably at 65 mph. i then started to investigate this problem to find many articles on how the rear motor mount fails on vehicles with as little as 50,000 miles. the dealer states this is a drivability issue and the vehicle will be fine with a new motor mount at the tune of $700. i have owned many vehicles and never had a motor mount issue. due to the fact that this vehicle has a front wheel drive system when the mount fails the engine does not just rise in the engine compartment but begins to vibrate with the vehicles tires in motion. *tr
I was driving 50-55mph on the highway, when my engine malfunction and blinking "d" indicator came on, i took it to a mechanic and immediately he told me he had other honda come in with the same problem, he told me it was a problem with the transmission, and it was something frequently in model year from 1999-2006, and that honda was ignoring the problem, please help i have a 2005 honda odyssey and it giving the same issues. *tr
The vehicle was a 2005 honda odyssey. i was traveling with my two children on the highway, going 75 mph and suddenly saw a flume of smoke behind my car. i notice the rpm jumped and i stepped on the brake immediately. it smelled like some liquid was burning. pull the car over onto the side of the interstate and look to find smoke coming from under the hood and the transmission fluid had leaked and sprayed all over the engine, hoses, battery, radiator, etc - causing the smell. towed it back to my house. when the car got to the house, the tow truck driver showed us that the atf had leaked probably completely out of the transmission. i would like for honda to recall the transmission and fix my car. it's not only a defective transmission, it also a hazardous - what if it had caught on fire - when the fluid sprayed out. *tr
The throttle goes to idle setting while driving and does not respond to the gas pedal. the problem is intermittent. the throttle responds again after about a minute after the problem occurs. *tr
Car jerks violently when shifting from one gear to another. on december 27, car stopped shifting and stalled on the freeway at night with my family in it. it stopped changing gear while i was going up hill and had to be towed. luckily i was able to guide it out of the freeway traffic. car was usually serviced at a honda dealership. *tr
2005 honda with 72k mi now exhibiting the classic "shuddering" issue...i.e. between 30-35 and 40-45mph in eco mode. the car literally shakes during acceleration until 50mph. we also experience humming from the transmission. it looks like several complaints regarding the same issue have been posted on the link below http://www.odysseytransmission.com//problemcases?msgid=510. honda's response is quite disappointing acknowledging lack of ownership concerning their product; leaving the consumer holding the bag. i feel like we've been sold a bill of goods. we the consumers would graciously appreciate an advocate who will hold grossly lucrative companies like honda accountable for their product and act in good faith on behalf of the consumer. your immediate attention is most appreciated.
I have very low mileage and the transmission seems to be going out. also the rear main seal has blown. the mechanic says because of the transmission it affect the rear seal. i know honda has had several issues with its transmissions and they have helped some people and not others. i filed a claim and was denied yet it seems there are issues that are the same as others that have been helped. *tr
The van is having transmission shudder issues when driving at about 30 to 40 mph. no warning lights on the dash board yet. *tr
When vehicle shifts from 2nd to 3rd, there is a delay(grind). a and b pillars are week and produce a whistling noise starting at 35 mph. the rear bench (the bigger part of the split bench) will not latch down to the floor. pax run flat tires are deflating with no age or puncture related problems. all of these are safety hazards. rear lift gate struts failed and will not lift up rear door and can cause the door to crash down. *tr
Transmission buzzes and shifts at 11 mph when not needing to do so. *tr
This is a new car purchased and serviced by the dealer from the date of delivery (12/28/04). the honda service dept did not discover the transmission problems until it malfunctioned. this is very unusual. i have all the service documents to prove it. the honda service department would like me to replace the transmission at my own expense. their negligence caused this auto transmission failure. the consumer stated a malfunction indicator light illuminated on the dashboard. the dealer stated it was a wiring problem and fixed it. however, three days later, the light illuminated again and the vehicle would not move when it was put in drive and therefore it had to be towed. later in the day, the consumer received a call from the dealer stating the transmission needed to be replaced. updated 09/12/12
Had our 05 odyssey ex-l in for standard servicing and was told rear and passenger side motor mounts required replacing (at a cost of $1200+)! van experiences noticeable noise and vibration as is shifts in and out of the eco phase of engine operation. i have never owned a vehicle that required motor mount replacement and after research, a service bulletin was apparently issued back in 2006 on this issue. this appears to be a widespread issue on the 2005 time frame odysseys. this is clearly an engineering issue and should be addressed thru honda via recall! *tr
Without warning, on a busy interstate in birmingham, al while traveling to florida on vacation, my vehicle's transmission burned up and gave out. there was no warning light, no hint of an issue prior to it failing, and a transmission flush and fill was performed at 60,000 miles two years ago, per the recommended interval by honda. i had to pull over two lanes to the shoulder in rush hour traffic at full speed with my car smoking and spewing transmission fluid all over the roadway and cars (plus a motorcycle) that were behind me. *tr
I was returning home and after driving on the freeway for approximately 45 minutes of driving at approximately 65 mph i heard a pop under the hood of my van and began to see smoke. i was unable to accelerate and had to turn on my hazard lights and pull off the freeway at the next exit. upon taking my vehicle to my mechanic, i was told my transmission had failed. *tr
Motor surges while driving down the highway. *tr
I want people to know that honda now has a software fix for shuddering transmission problems and shaking. our 2005 odyssey touring would shake between 35-45 mph. we had the transmission serviced several time and never had a broken engine mount. honda just came out with this fix in late june 2012 and it seems to have solved our problem. our honda garage installed this software update for free even though we now have 122k. it only takes 15 minutes. hope this helps. *tr
Vehicle has been exhibiting a very harsh shaking/vibration while in eco mode. this is distracting as well as uncomfortable. recently the vibration has gotten so bad, we can not see out of any of the mirrors as the shaking vibrates them to the point of complete uselessness. the worst part is that we just paid $2000 at a dealership to replace the rear motor mount and flush transmission again. we have had this van since 60k and serviced transmission four times now, replacing motor mount twice. this time, with no apparent effect. *tr
I'd been experiencing symptoms of judder for over 3 years that i have been driving odyssey. it's rare and hard to replicate, so never bothered taking to honda dealership or any other mechanic. i recently learned that honda had a service bulletin but i was not aware of the same. it basically means honda knew about the problem and there were other owners who had experienced similar problem. (per honda it's a service bulletin, but not a recall, so i was not pro-actively informed about it). as part of the service bulletin they extended the warranty (8 years/105k miles) and would fix the issue for free. i was not aware of this. service bulletin: 12-029 when i learned about this my vehicle had crossed the age but not the mileage (2014 and 103k miles). i requested the dealer and honda to make an exception as i was still within the miles that they had. i had been experiencing the problem long before i was aware, but didn't bother to fix it because it didn't bother my drive. i feel honda should have fixed the issue for free, especially a known issue. add to that i am curious why it's treated as service bulletin, but not a recall. in any event i wanted to share with nhtsa, other consumers and honda. *tr
The consumer is experiencing problems with the transmission. when the vehicle is going 45 mph or greater the rpm's drops down to about 1400 rpm's. when shifting into over drive. the engine begins to vibrates and will continue up to 55 mph. when accelerating above 55 mph the problem disappears. owner has taken the vehicle to the dealer and has also contacted the manufacturer. neither has a solution to this problem. provide further details. *tr
Just bought a 2005 honda odyssey. right off the lot got on the freeway and the check engine light came on and started shuttering and slipping . very unhappy , slapped down $4000 as a down payment and financed the rest. now i own a van that has major problems and no cash to fix it. haven't even had it for a day and it already has transmission problems. need honda to fix it at their expense. their impeccable reputation is getting destroyed with this transmission problem that all odyssey owners are having with models 2005- 2009 . they charge a premium for their vehicles and should be forced to repair their defective transmissions regardless of mileage on vehicles. our government needs to step in and help its citizens with this problem. *tr
The transmission is slipping. *tr
2005 honda transmission is failing at 60k miles. some motor mounts were ruined from the shaking and needed to be replaced. the front axle has damage from the shaking as well. and i still need to replace the transmission. the gearing gets stuck shifting around 45 mph, it groans and shakes the car before finally shifting down a gear. *kb
When the car is about 45-50 mph the engine shutters. it feels like i'm driving over railroad tracks. the car also shutters when the eco light comes on. i've been told that the torque converter is failing and that it is a known failure in this model and year. honda needs to do a recall on this because this is a defective transmission. *tr
We are orig owner of vehicle. in 4/11 had van serviced at honda dealership. in 5/11 while driving on freeway got a check engine light. took to repair shop. needed a new transmission. called honda (while it was being serviced a tranny shop) and they said if i towed it to a dealership they'd take a look and doubted anything could be done, but they'd look. at that point i would have had to pay repair shop for work already done (near 1000). i see a recall in the news for 2005+ odysseys but have never been notified by honda personally. we would like reimbursement for faulty transmission that is a recurrent theme according to the internet with these vehicles. *kb
2005 honda odyssey, transmission failure at 111,930 miles. the transmissions shops said the torque converters are bad and fail regularly in the honda vans. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled and refused to restart. a local mechanic replaced the transmission. the dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure, but denied any assistance with repairs to the vehicle. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 85,000 and the current mileage was 93,000. updated 01/06/12 *bf the consumer stated the transmission was slipping. updated 01/06/12
Transmission problem, vehicle shuddering in between gear changes. 2005 honda odyssey, 58,000 miles. needs a new transmission per repair shop and dealer. appears there are numerous complaints on honda transmissions from 2000 to 2010 honda odysseys. will cost approximately $4800 to replace. no recall to date yet numerous complaints on the net. *tr
The car shutters around 30-40 mph. i can feel the vibration for 3-5 seconds. i am very disappointed by honda vehicle's quality. how many complaints do honda and the government need for a recall? 05 oddessey's are notorious for this problem. *tr
First owners ot 2005 odyssey, van has 65k and all service records, dealer tells us we need newtorque converter and 2 new engine mounts. absolutely shocked by this since previous honda crx lasted over 180k with no major repairs...contacted honda usa for financial assistance. *ln
