As my wife was preparing to enter an exit ramp from the highway, the van experienced several hard shifts of the transmission which caused her to almost lose control of the vehicle. since that instance, every time the van shifts gears, it is a very hard shift that jerks the occupants around. van will not shift above third gear or into reverse. mechanic has diagnosed this as a transmission failure. *tr

Transmission failed and burned out completely going 65 miles per hour on i95. 3 kids in the car and left at the side of the highway, very dangerous situation. honda will not help us but would like us to pay them $5600 for a rebuilt honda transmission. there are numerous reports of honda transmissions failing at as low as 45k miles. there should be a class action lawsuit for model year 2003. they do not care how many lives they put at risk. *tr

My honda odyessy's transmission overheated while on a family trip. i have kept up with the service scheduled outlined by honda. van has 122k on it now. i bought a honda expecting to get the long haul out of it! 122k is not my idea of the long haul! the estimate is a $4000 cost to replace the transmission! i have read about the law suit the was won and want to know why this was not a recall of some sort! there is clearly a big problem, there is a website created just for this issue! if i had not done all of the maintenance or did not take care of the car i would not be so upset. code p0730, gear ratio failure. *kb

2003 honda odyssey transmission failure - while driving on i-65n in indiana, at 70 mph, transmission locked up in the fast lane at 8:00 p.m. vehicle skidded about 30 feet, stopped and myself and family quickly exited vehicle. i called 911 to get troopers to alert other drivers about immobile vehicle in fast lane of interstate. ran back about 70 yards to flag traffic over to slow lane to avoid someone getting killed. my wife and daughter are standing out in the median waiting for help to arrive. thanks to some kind indiana drivers for stopping and attempting to push van out of road but with tranny locked up, no movement whatsoever. torque converter locked up. transmission is completely ruined, need new unit. estimated cost to repair $ 3,580. *kb

I was told approximately two months ago that the reason the shift was hard was because i had two broken motor mounts. they were repaired and they suggested changing the transmission fluid. then right before thanksgiving i noticed my car having difficulty shifting between 2nd & 3rd gear and the rpms were going crazy so i took it to the dealer. i was informed the transmission needed to be replaced for $4200. i have spent about $1500 this year on repairs for this van. i always have driven hondas and toyotas and fully expected to get over 200,000 miles out of this van. i'm very disappointed to find many people have had the same problem and that honda is not helpful. this is my last honda. *kb

Driving downtown where i live, my transmission stopped working. i was able to get it into a low gear and move off to the side of the road. *tr

First trans drive indicator light started flashing.paid to replace sensor and flush trans oil.three weeks later trans refuses to shift out of park.,i opened steering wheel override and trans is working fine except i must employ override feature to shift gear. *tr

Van had difficulty shifting from 2nd -3rd gear with slipping and revving exceptional high before transitions suddenly into next gear. van was recalled at 24,000 miles for repair to fix the transmission problem, which was completed in 2004 as requested. this van had been diligently maintained only at dealership, other than routine oil changes, and we are the original owners. service department at dealership states that the transmission is shot and needs to be replaced, costing $6600. honda of america is not helpful and unwilling to help in any manner. *tr

While driving my daughter to school, accelerating from 35 to 40+, transmission locked up! extremely dangerous!!! could have been in a serious accident since we were merging onto a busy highway. next day, another lock up + slipping between 25 & 35 mph and @ 50 pm. transmission slips and gear shift will get stuck in park, reverse & drive. rpm revs high. honda dealer diagnosed today as "internal transmission failure" 164,000 highway miles, serviced @ dealer, babied with oil changes, etc. now $4,000 quote for transmission 3 yrs/36,000 mile warranty. i have been a loyal honda owner since 1990, but will not consider buying any future hondas. *tr

I was stopped @ a red light on a 50 mph speed limit road & when the light turn green i pushed the accl the van rolled on but will not accelerate further engine kept revving & a big construction truck almost rear ended me looks like the transmission stalls the vehicle. *tr

The transmission is failing, slipping. after the d on the gear indicator started flashing. while driving the car has a difficult time going into the next gear revving up to 6000 rpms its gotten so bad at times that it wont go into reverse. honda dealers in the area are giving me the run around as to when the 2004 recall warranty is up. apparently my car (1 previous owner) was serviced for the recall. doesn't honda have to help if there is this many complaints about the same make model and year? literally google 2003 honda odyssey transmission and the complaints are endless in the thousands. i'm a single mother of 4 and can't afford to fix this or buy a new car. *tr

In stop and go traffic, when i pres the brake pedal, the vehicle jerks. when i press the gas pedal, on some occasions, the vehicle (still in drive) does not move but the engine revs up. i have to shift down and then back again to drive before it would move. there was a transmission recall on this car in 2004 and the dealer had installed a kit of some sort. however, this fix has not been permanent. looks like i have lost the transmission altogether. *tr

Although having brought the car in to the dealer under a power train/automatic transmission recall in 2004 as a result of nhtsa campaign #04v17600, the automatic transmission began to fail some months ago and the malfunction indicator light came on with p0730 (gear ratio error) being decoded by my mechanic. some months later, the transmission was even more problematic and the difficulty in it shifting from second to third gear was so bad that the car could not be driven (95,000 miles). the problem appears to be with the overheating of the torque converter. this problem is even more likely to happen on a v-6 odyssey, which i have, because the honda power train/auto. transmission cannot handle the extra torque of the larger engine. replacing all the solenoids did not solve the problem and the transmission is currently being rebuilt but not by honda as replacing it with a factory-rebuilt honda transmission will only lead to the same issues. there are thousands of complaints on the internet of transmission failure in honda odysseys from 1999 up to the present. a class action suit forced honda to extend the power train warranty to 100,000 miles on 1999-2001 odysseys . . . but those of us with newer odysseys have been left out in the cold. my car is a one-owner vehicle, regularly serviced according to honda specifications and never used for pulling heavy loads or any sort of irregular driving. in fact, the car has been 'babied' from the day i bought it. *tr

On the freeway when all of a sudden without warning slipped and lost power. very scary with small children in the car and was barley able to make it off the freeway without getting into an accident. only by the grace of god did we make it safely off the freeway. honda dealer said we needed a new transmission. i had the extended warranty up to 106,000. just a few thousand miles over warranty and honda would only grant %50 coverage. still cost me $2797.00. honda of america knows all about this transmission problem but still does not compensate loyal honda customers. my dealer replaced this transmission (that had a previous recall in 2003) with a "re-manufactured transmission" now on september 19, 2011 the tcs light came on with the engine warning light and the car "shuddered" badly at 30 mph. brought to the dealer but they are denying that it is a transmission problem? we bought the honda odyssey for its safety features and reliability. honda and their dealer are not standing behind their product. i will look elsewhere for my next car purchase. *tr

2003 odyssey left my wife in a terrible situation. it suddenly failed when she was in the middle of traffic with children in the car. with no warning, it would not move the vehicle and ground to a stop, leaving her almost out of control of the vehicle. honda is supposed to be a manufacturer with well designed, reliable products, but it is not so with this transmission. when a manufacturer realizes there is a problem with a vehicle, but year after year after year does nothing to remedy the problem, it is irresponsible and reckless to continue to manufacture the vehicle with the problematic transmission. *kb

Transmission failed while traveling 40mph at 130000 miles. it was replaced. there was a class action lawsuit regarding 2003 transmissions, but the window had closed, so i had to pay for it fully. november 20, 2011, while driving 45mph, dash lights flash, radio loses power. when i turn the ignition off, the car is dead. restarts almost immediately, after lots of clicking in the dash. at varying speeds the dash lights will flash, and the clock and radio go dead briefly. sometimes the door lock and the sliding door buttons don't work, but if i wait 2 minutes, i hear the clicking in the dash, and suddenly there is power. left it at the dealership to be checked out over 4 days, and they say nothing is wrong. to be traveling at 40+ and have the car go dead is a hazard to me and my family, as well as everyone else driving while i am driving. it is currently at another shop to be evaluated. *tr

Automatic transmission gear shifter has become very loose and also allows removal of the car key in any gear, rather than just in park. this lead to the car rolling away after being parked on a slight incline when it turned out that the transmission was inadvertently shifted to neutral rather than park and then the key removed. *tr

Transmission failed at under 80k miles. there are numerous complaints about these mini vans. we serviced our vehicle appropriately and also brought the car in to be checked when the transmissions were recalled. at that time they installed a trans jet kit which would solve the transmission problem. we even installed a transmission cooler. honda is unwilling to provide much assistance at all with this repair and i think they should have done a full recall on these transmissions, as they knowingly sold a poor product. *tr

Transmission failure: travelling up a hill on a freeway at 70mph with family/children in the vehicle, suddenly & without warning, transmission wildly shifts from 4th down to 2nd/1st, back to 3rd, continues lurching/shifting back and forth as rpm's fluctuate wildly; hobbled to next exit, smoke & trans fluid coming from under hood. called local dealer who "has no idea" what's wrong with it but for $100 will check it out. result: they tell me that trans overheated & melted down, burned out clutches, needs new trans -> $4800 (rebuilt). trans was just fine & trans fluid was fine prior to this incident, car was maintained, absolutely no warning of anything amiss. now i find out via the internet that many, many people have this problem w/2003 odyssey's. called honda, they tell me, "there is no known problem with this model year" (lie) and they won't do anything to help with the repair because the car came w/36,000 mile warranty and we are beyond that. he actually asked me, "is this the first time your transmission has blown on this vehicle? are you still on your first transmission?" which is a funny thing to ask if there is no known problem. internet indicates that when people have trans replaced, 2nd trans frequently blows also. this car had a recall for trans oil cooling, was completed before we bought (new from dealer) & we were not informed about it. this is definitely a safety issue when your trans explodes at 70mph with your children in the back seat. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) *tt

While driving at highway speeds the transmission froze and released repeatedly nearly causing a rear end crash. the vehicle was taken to a mechanic were it was diagnosed as transmission failure. what is important here is that the vehicle was recalled and the work done in 2005. however, it is blatantly apparent that the "fix" honda did for the recall was not to correct the problem but only a temporary patch. all the recall did was delay the failure, it didn't correct the problem. honda has simply moved the mileage at which the transmission will fail so they don't have to take full responsibility and fix what they sold. sadly we paid an addition $4,000 to $5,000 for the honda name so we wouldn't have issues. now we are not only out that money but honda still believes that their name deserves more money for a rebuilt transmission that has been shown to still fail. we have been quoted an additional $2,500 to $3,000 more than what it would cost to fix a competing american company transmission. it is unconscionable that honda knows it has an issue, then only patched it to delay responsibility. this is especially troubling when you consider that the transmissions fail at high speed on the highway. a definite risk to peoples lives. *tr

Transmission started slipping at 77k miles, even though i had brought the van into the dealer for the 'fix' when the recall was issued. was driving along highway and during acceleration engine rpm went up and van acted like it was in neutral. dealer wanted ~$6k to fix. honda offered $2k as good will. *tr

Vehicle popped out of gear while moving at 50mph and would not accelerate. upon stopping on side of road and shifting from d to park and back to d, the van was able to move for a few hundred yards. at 35mph it popped out of gear again. did same thing with transmission and was able to "limp" home as long as vehicle stayed under 30mph. towed vehicle to dealer and found out transmission is bad. i have a 7yr/105,000 mile warranty, but it expired last year. i only have 103,000 miles on the van. the repair is quoted at $4200. i have complete and timely service records at a honda dealership for the life of the van. *tr

I was driving down a two lane road and the transmission down shifted on its own in a violent manor. the rps jumped up. i let off the gas and the auto went back to normal. 10 minutes later i was on the highway running 70mph and the auto down shifted again in the same fashion as described before. i brought it to two shops and the technician was able to reproduce the problem. both technicians stated that the transmission was the problem and it needed to be replaced. after doing research i found that this problem has happened to many hondas.

Minivan started to accelerate upon push of accelerator (rpms jumped significantly). jerky/harsh acceleration from 0-40. severe shudder of van when decelerating between gears. malfunctioning overdrive (will not down shift to d3, 2, or 1st gear while rolling. reverse gear did not work unless the car was started again. *kb

At 101,500 miles and less than 2 years and 20,000 miles after the first transmission rebuild, our 2003 honda odyssey van is once again in need of a complete transmission rebuild. this is the same problem that thousands of other honda owners are reporting. we purchased the van new from honda in december 2002 and have religiously maintained it (oil changes, tires, brakes, tune-ups, check-ups, etc.). at 82,289 miles, the original transmission "came apart" while my wife was driving one day. prior to that, the gears seemed to be slipping. frustrated with the poor service from the dealership and the run-around honda has been giving their customers (specifically with odyssey owners), we had the transmission rebuilt by aamco ($3500) and were "assured" that we were getting a better transmission than the original. how is a transmission that lasts 1/4 of the time than the original a better one? this 2nd transmission was fine until friday 7/22/2011, when we were taking a trip down to nags head, nc. suddenly, i noticed when we were approximately 45 miles away from home (on i-95) that the rpm was up around 6x, the van was not shifting gears, and there was smoke coming out the back. i quickly got off the interstate, came to a stop and then it would not shift at all. we had it towed back to fredericksburg, va and were informed that the transmission fluid was "burnt," the transmission itself would have to be replaced, and the radiator would need to be replaced. we are once again looking at spending $4-5k for a vehicle we bought new, kept well-maintained, and has relatively low miles for its age (101k). when we bought the odyssey, we also purchased a cr-v and declare we were honda people. this is why we are no longer honda people. the honda odysseys have a well documented history of problems with their transmissions, and honda has not stepped up to take care of their customers. honda owes every odyssey owner an apology! *tr

Vehicle had a flashing "d" light and it didn't have the same pick up. it was taken to the dealer dch kay honda who declared it was the 4th pressure switch $271.29 and the service advisor said, the transmission was fine that was july 21, 2011. september 22, 2011 the car is now sluggish and slamming into gears i took the car to dch kay honda and they said, the transmission needs to be replaced $4420.00. the van has been sitting because i can't afford to replace the transmission. *tr

My family and i were traveling on the freeway with cruise control set and began smelling smoke and then started seeing smoke behind our families vehicle. we immediately pulled over and found transmission fluid all underneath and on back of our vehicle. we managed to make it to a honda dealer and after 3 hours of "we're not really sure" we were told "honda" told them our torque diverted was bad and our transmission needed to be replaced. $5000!! *kb

I was driving on the freeway about a mile outside of rawlins, wy and the rpm indicator suddenly went all the way to the top and then smoke started coming out from under the hood. i decided to drive it into rawlins although it was slipping gears and i had a hard time getting it to shift from 2nd to 3rd gear. i had to drive very slowly and carefully and when i got to the gas station in rawlins, there was transmission fluid all under the car and on the under side of the car. so i called and took it to a mechanic just before they closed. he quickly checked it and said it probably just needed a transmission service. so my boyfriend and i towed it to casper, wyoming and took it to the honda dealership there. they checked it and it came up with 3 malfunction codes p0710n/p0780/p1750. so it needed a new transmission. the mileage is at 148417 and i have only owned the vehicle for about a year now. it has been well taken care of and there was no previous indication that it had any problems. i was told it would cost me between $3200-$4500 to have a new transmission put in my car. i do not have the money for that. so now i have no vehicle for my family. *kb

Transmission in vehicle failed during operation in traffic. vehicle operator managed to move the vehicle to safety despite diminished operational function of the vehicle. there was a potential for a serious injury or fatality related to this incident. it is my opinion that these vehicles (2003 honda odyssey) should be removed from traffic situations until the manufacturer (honda) can prove that these vehicles are safe. this situation is more severe than the recent toyota problems. in addition to the hazard mentioned the owner paid the local honda dealer $4,300 for a replacement transmission, hope it goes more than 68,000 miles.

Starting the vehicle up and trying to drive away it will jump out of first at which point the engine over revs. must sit for a few seconds and it will "bang" into second gear shaking the entire vehicle. driving down the road it will slip out of third gear at 55mph and then "bang" into 4th. this vehicle has had the transmission completely rebuilt four times since 07/01/2011. the second time for a rebuild was january 2012, then may 2012 and now it must go back a fourth time august 2012. on several occasions while pulling out into traffic the transmission has slipped out of gear and nearly caused accidents. this is a very dangerous vehicle that has a transmission that can not be repaired once it begins to fail. at highway speeds when trying pass another vehicle the transmission will stutter slip and "bang" into passing gear or slip out of gear and then re-engage in a lower gear preventing the over taking of the other vehicle. another incident occurred on the expressway at 65mph i began smelling smoke and pulled off onto an exit ramp at which time the entire vehicle was engulfed in thick white smoke that smelled like burning transmission fluid. we had to exit the vehicle for fear of it being on fire. *tr

I was driving up the tioga pass in yosemite national park with my family when the car started jerking violently and abruptly shifting gears. the tcs indicator was on, but couldn't be turned off. i pulled off the road and parked. when i later tried to back the car up, the reverse wouldn't engage and the car almost went down a steep embankment into a lake. there had been no past problems with the transmission. i had the transmission rebuilt and it failed a year later driving at speed on the freeway. i had it rebuilt again and it failed again a year later after while driving at speed on the freeway. in both cases the abrupt loss of power on the freeway could have caused an accident. i'm now told that an additional aftermarket transmission cooler is needed because the transmissions overheat. *tr

We discovered today that our 2003 honda odyssey was in need of a new transmission, the sad part is this vehicle only has 89,500 miles, the honda dealership that inspected the van told us that the cost to replace the transmission was going to be $4200. we pretty much experienced all the same problems that many other users are mentioning on this site, it first started by skipping gears between 2nd and 3rd, then the tcs and emc light came on and after this everything came downhill. the dealer told us that the van was serviced in the past to take care of the recall by installing the jet fan cooling thing, apparently this was a bandage to the real issue as a couple of years later the transmission finally died on us. we bought honda for their apparent "superior quality" and have never been more disappointed. we feel like we got screwed and if there is a recall or some lemon law we would like to know about it because this just can not keep happening!!!!!!!! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 honda odyssey. the contact stated the transmission vibrated abnormally while driving 25 mph. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who performed a diagnostic test and found that the torque converter needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure who advised that they would pay $500 toward the repair, leaving a balance of $1500. the contact declined the offer. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 97,000. the consumer stated the torque converter was replaced for $500. since the new converter was installed, and code od p0740 is displaying. the consumer stated the next step is to have the transmission replaced. updated 10/21/11. *jb

Bought my odyssey used, certified with the 7yr/100k mi warranty from a honda dealership in alexandria, va in may 2006 with less than 20,000 miles on it. have had it serviced by my local honda dealership exclusively since purchasing. less than 24 hours ago (at about 99000 miles), i experienced my first odd experience with shifting up/down while at expressway and freeway speeds. i returned home within 50 miles and parked the car until i could get it to the dealership (2 miles from my house). first thing this morning (about 7:30 am), took the odyssey to the dealership for a diagnostic of the transmission and to have the brakes checked and/or replaced as needed as well as any other routine maintenance that might be needed. received a phone call from the service department at the dealership about 1 pm today and was told that i needed a new transmission, as the old one was shot. the price quoted to me for a remanufactured transmission and control module was about $5000, not what i wanted to hear or was expecting. i took my vehicle in last just a few months ago for an oil change and any regular maintenance needed, expecting any abnormalities would be noted. i would have been due for another oil change about now, but i just recently changed the oil and oil filter myself, less than 3000 miles ago. how is it that a supposedly reliable vehicle can, without warning, go from 100% functioning to needing a major drive component replacement? i just called honda corporate for assistance with this, as a major equipment failure of this nature shouldn't be dropped on the consumer, and i have read many similar issues with this model year transmission. i'd be happy paying 25-50% of the costs, with a minimum 36k mi/ 3 yr warranty on the transmission. this would only be the second major expense i've had to pay on the van, as the first one was the regularly scheduled timing belt replacement, which was done well before the typical mileage mark. *tr

Check engine is on. when cruising the car the is a slip in the transmission at lower gear. the rpm increase and vehicle stalls. conicelli honda service center, conshohocken, pa described the problem as internal transmission failure. *tr

Encountered transmission failure with 2003 honda odyssey. 2004 transmission recall performed by dealer and factory maintenance scheduled performed throughout ownership. in june '11 noticed slipping when shifting from second to third occurred. extremely dangerous and scary with 2 little children in the car on the highway or on the local streets. the car jolted on the highway for the first incident and we nearly swerved into the median. i've been told all is normal to replace the trans by varying dealerships. i feel that honda has not investigated nor resolved the trans problem thoroughly and now i could be held paying the bill once it is replaced. after much research, we discovered that the odyssey transmission has had numerous complaints of failure. honda corp indicated that the dealership will have full authority to issue a second recall if it is the transmission. the dealership said that honda corp makes the decision and a case needs to be filed. however, the seller said that if you bought the car at the dealership or have had spent a lot of many in service at honda, this weighs heavily in their decision and customers are more likely awarded the full recall value. this is wrong for the honda company to play games with a safety issue and only reward highest paying customers with a recall. all should be benefit and they should be held liable.

2003 honda odyssey began slipping in transmission from 2nd to 3rd gear approximately 1 month ago. i took the van to the dealer twice, only to be told they could not identify a problem. they did report that i needed $650 of other maintenance, which i agreed to, but could not "replicate" the problem i was there for. after the 3rd visit in less than 2 weeks, i was told that the transmission had failed and would need to be replaced. after much research, we discovered that the odyssey transmission has had numerous complaints of failure. the dealership said they had contacted honda corp. but they declined any assistance. we are the original owners and have been loyal customers of this dealership for the past 8 years. the dealership did offer a 10% discount, but the cost is still a staggering $3800. i believe that honda, having full knowledge that they are promoting and selling defective transmissions, should be held liable for their product. *tr

Approximately 60 days ago on a saturday i took my 2003 honda odyssey to one of the local honda dealers for and oil change service. i asked the service advisor to check out the check engine light because it had come on the week before. he told me that the regular service department was closed and that i shouldn't worry about it until it come up for the smog check. about 3 weeks later on memorial day weekend i had my wife and three children in the vehicle traveling on a major freeway and without warning the transmission failed. the vehicle lost power and we were very lucky to get to the side of the road without getting into a collision. i had the vehicle towed to the same dealership that had done the service and they confirmed that the transmission was bad and recommended a rebuilt replacement at a cost of over $3700.00 dollars. a new computer was also recommended for an extra $1,100.00. the van is still sitting in their lot. after a brief internet search it appears that this is a major problem with some honda products. my wife and children were very scared of some of the large trucks that past by us on both side at what seemed to be a high rate of speed. but it was probably more that we were slowing down at a fast rate. *tr

Honda transmission problem. when the vehicle switch from 2nd gear to 3rd gear, the vehicle accelerate to high rpm but doesn't move enough causing go slow for a while. not any responsible answer from honda. *tr
