Tl* the contact owns a 2003 honda odyssey. while driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle decelerated into second gear and the speed decreased to 35 mph. the vehicle jerked violently and abruptly. the rpms increased to eight thousand rpms and the vehicle failed to shift out of second gear. the contact was forced to shift into neutral gear at 25 mph in order to coast. the contact managed to shift into drive from neutral gear. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 04v176000 (power train). the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 249,000.
Torque converter and transmission went out on vehicle. everyday as driving main streets or highways while accelerating the car would feel like its gone into neutral for 5-15 min varying. and will pick back up on acceleration. took vehicle in for inspection i was told the transmission is going out. when i took it in for repair was told the transmission went out due to torque converter over heating melting a part to the coolant system and also damaging the transmission. i tried to pull recalls completed on vehicle but nothing show for the at particular part but i u dersrand there was i need .what will be the protocall for possible reimbursement on repairs.
While in motion, my vehicle will sporadically not shift into a higher gear. this results in lack of acceleration and has caused problems when trying to merge into traffic, crossing highways and intersections which cause the need for other drivers to swerve around me. no matter how much gas i give the thing, it will not speed up or shift into gear until something happens that causes a sudden jolt, and then it will jump into gear. on the contrary, it also gears down on its own while in motion or does not shift into a gear at all after stopping at a stop sign or red light. this has happened several times while trying to cross the highway near my home. when this happens, i must shift into park or reverse and then back into drive until it goes into gear. i cross many highways daily which put my children and i at an unnecessary risk. i have researched this, and i am not the only owner experiencing these issues. it continues to happen without a permanent resolution. there was a recall on the transmission "power train:automatic transmission-recall for 2003 honda odyssey" and my particular vin shows as being repaired. however, it seems that it is still causing hazardous issues for my family. the recall on the tranny states that a defect causes the gears to "chip". that sounds like what i am experiencing. i will say that during these instances, the tcs light will come on. sometimes i have to manually turn it off, and sometimes it goes off on its own after it finally goes into gear. i am at a loss for what to do. did honda fix the problem with the tranny or did they simple put in another defected component? other examples of owners with same issues: http://www.carcomplaints.com/honda/odyssey/2003/transmission/transmission_failed.shtml http://www.odysseytransmission.com/ http://forums.edmunds.com/discussion/6155/honda/odyssey/honda-odyssey-transmission-problems

Can't accelerate from 20 mph to 30 mph. only has 104,000 miles on the vehicle. took the car to the dealer who said transmission failed and it would cost over $4,000 to fix it. this is totally wrong from the manufacturer. honda should pay for it. see attached diagnostic invoice from the dealer.

The vehicle was moving at 70mph on cruise control when the transmission suddenly shifted down to either second or third gear causing the vehicle slow down and move at a maximum speed around 20mph. this could cause a serious accident if there was another vehicle behind us.

Transmission failed at 150k miles. honda is aware that the transmissions of the older odysseys are not lasting long.
My wife was driving down the road at 40mph when the transmission started making real bad grinding noise then stopped working. *tr
I parked my car and took the key out of the ignition. only problem was that the car was still in drive. i know this was an known issue (recall) with the car. i had it fixed at a dealer to address the recall on this specific issue. obviously it didn't fix the problem. *tr
I was driving my van with my two kids in it when i noticed that the van was jerking frequently and there was no pick up. the rpm went to 4 and 5 thousand but the speed was not able to go beyond 50 and 60 mph. this incident occurred while i was on a freeway. when i took the van to our usual mechanic shop, they found that it was a transmission problem. getting a new transmission was very expensive and i had to settle for a rebuilt transmission. after researching online, i found that this is a common issue with honda odysseys built during the year my van was built. i would like for nhtsa to ensure honda pays for our repairs and ensures the company fixes all remaining vans on the road with this issue. *tr
Traveling on an interstate highway, transmission failed. fluid exited transmission and "smoke" appeared at rear of vehicle. dealership diagnosed transmission failure and estimated repair costs at $2500-3500. since we were 1000 miles from home and did not want to put that much into repairs, we bought a new car from the dealership. later found out this transmission frequently fails under these circumstances due to lack of fluid circulation. fluid is "blown" out of transmission and to rear of car. it may be due to a defect in design. *tr
I was driving down the road at 20 mph and i had to use the brakes, my car jerked suddenly twice while i was gently pushing the brakes (as if i slammed on them twice). i accelerated slowly and once i got back into second gear my car wouldn't catch and started to make a whirring noise. once it got past second gear it drives slower than usual for the amount of rpms being used. this is a serious and dangerous problem. it's only on the second gear that it glitches up. i know this car has a lot of miles but it has a newer motor and we have kept up on the fluids for the vehicle. it should not be acting this way and i expect a recall on this promptly. every time i drive my van it is not like it use to be. it's slower and as stated before the rpms it uses should makes its speed faster but the speed slowly increases while the rpms increase drastically and quickly. i want this fixed and i want this fixed now!! i will not allow my children in this vehicle because of the way it's acting and it is completely unsafe for anyone at this point. i will be contacting corporate if needed. i expect a response from honda promptly. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 honda odyssey. while driving at unknown speeds, the accelerator pedal was applied, but the vehicle failed to increase in speed. also, the check engine warning indicator was illuminated. the vehicle was taken to lindsay honda (5959 scarborough blvd, columbus, oh 43232, (614) 864-5250) where it was diagnosed that the motor mounts needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to roush honda (100 w schrock rd, westerville, oh 43081, (614) 882-1535) who stated that the transmission needed to be replaced. the dealer also recommended replacing the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and stated that the transmission was repaired in 2005. the manufacturer also provided case number: 05972285 and referred the contact to the local dealer for diagnostic testing. the failure mileage was 193,000
Car was running on city road and suddenly stopped running and check engine light came up immediately. it was good that i was not busy and not running fast or not in the freeway, and there is no car behind my car. i stop engine; after sometime i started and it was running again and after 20 minutes it stopped on the road again. i drove to a nearby honda service center for checking and they gave me documents that said a transmission replacement needed that cost more than 6,000. i drove back in my parking lot and park there and did not drive on the road again. i tried in the parking lot and found it runs when the car is cold, but when it heated it stop, but after sometimes it run again. i do not feel safe and do not drive this car on the road. some of my friends also brought the same car and they faced the same problem after 100,000-180,000. if a car transmission failed like this and if it happen on the freeway with 70 speed it can make serious accident. honda co. must recall this model and fix this problem. *tr

Based on nhtsa recall 04v-176 - transmission recall, any car below 15k miles will have a return line installed to lubricate the 2nd gear. above 15k miles needs to be examined by the dealer for discoloration of the clutche plates inside the gear box. honda stated that they fixed the problem with a return line, but in fact if the 2nd gear had this issue, this is not a fix, but just a work around to save repair cost for honda. how did nhtsa approve such a temp remediation, when the transmissions are faulty. opened up a case with honda and i was told that if the tranny has an issues but is operational, it is not considered as faulty. how can honda state if the car is operational, it is not faulty, in that case does honda expect the van to break and be unoperational in the middle of the road in order to claim the issue as a recall ? my servce report from the dealer clearly states that the recall of the return line to the 2nd gear should only be done if the vehicle was below 15k miles, how was this done on my car with 40k miles and above. and how was this authorized or is it legal ? got a report from the dealer recently which clearly states the problem is with the 2nd gear not shifting to the next gear. every honda odyssey owner knows the transmission problem is due to faulty transmissions and inferiror clutch plates in the 2nd and 3rd gears. i anticipate nhtsa take actions on such corporations who try to evade the systems and provide a patch/work around solutions which is not a permanent fix. service reports will be provided if required
The gear in the transmission broken in to pieces, shot in to bearing and broken the case of transmission, made a terrible big sound. the car on free way in more than 65 miles, all the lights is on. engine died and speed out of control. i have asked just answer, the expert told me that is not normal accident! if you like we will sent pic to you and feed back center. Passenger airbag light came on for a few seconds while driving at highway speed limit. then vehicle seems like the transmission was slipping or took a few seconds to engage from a starting movement forward leaving a stop light. at idle the tachometer started to rev between 1100-2000 rpms at standing idle in park.the sliding doors get jammed stuck when attempting to open from the dash controls. i know these could cause and accident and not be able to get ny children out of the vehicle via the sliding power side doors.vehicle was purchased on 12-12-2014. *tr
The transmission disengaged at 65 mph and i had to keep cycling the gas pedal until the trans caught on at 40 mph and this went on until i brought it home. i was able to take it to the honda dealer and they said i need a new transmission. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 honda odyssey. while driving 45 mph, the contact heard a loud noise and the vehicle stalled. the contact was unable to restart the vehicle. the transmission warning light illuminated. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. the mechanic diagnosed that the second gear transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown.
Like many other complaints about the 2003 odyssey, we have experienced a transmission failure. like others, our van has had the original recall notice work performed (honda recall number 'p30' in early 2004, after the announcement), and yet at a relatively low 125,000 miles the transmission went out in nov '14, as confirmed by a local honda dealer. honda stated that, since the previous work has been done under recall, they are not liable for any more work to be performed. my complaint is this: if so many other '02-'04 odyssey owners are having the same problem, it is obvious that honda did not properly correct their earlier mistake, and they should pony up to fix the transmissions, or reimburse owners who already had the work performed. my request: nhtsa place pressure on american honda to do the right thing, and own up monetarily or service-wise to myself and the thousands of other owners who have had/are having/will have these issues. *js
I paid $9,998.48 for my odyssey. i bought it used. i was told that all the maintenance was up to date and they showed me the paper work indicating that as well. i also took the van to a shop to be sure that all the maintenance was up to date. i bought a 5yr/100,000 mile warranty from the dealership where i bought the van as well, just to be sure that if anything was to happen i would be covered. i put less than 40,000 miles on my van when it left me sitting in the middle of the highway with my three kids in the van on my way home from work. i was driving home from work when my van started acting crazy. i was driving and the rpms would go from 2 to 5 and the van would slow down. it kept doing this, when suddenly i was at a full stop. i had the vehicle in drive and was pressing the gas pedal but the only thing that moved was the rpms. the van would not move at all.i have only had my van for 2.5 years. i keep all the maintenance up to date and took very good care of my van. now this van that i paid dearly for is sitting in my driveway and will not move. i had it towed to a shop and the mechanic said that the diagnostics indicated that my transmission has failed and needed to be replaced. the warranty company that i purchased my warranty through is now saying that they will not cover the cost of replacing my transmission. there is something very wrong with that. now my kids and i have been without a ride since before thanksgiving. what kind of help can i get with this? can anyone please give me some information? *tr
Submission from constituent re recall 04-021:c "automatic transmission recall for honda odyssey 2003" (full document not imaged). *smd the consumer stated according to an emission testing center, there was a problem with the transmission, the computer gave two codes, p0730 and p1750. the consumer was informed, the transmission recall, was performed on her vehicle in the past. however, the problem has since returned. *jb
When accelerating from first gear to second gear at approximately 10-20 mph the vehicle seems to hesitate than jump into third gear.the distance from store to home is 3 miles with numerous stop lights. during this stop and go trip it happened 3 times. i had the vehicle towed to the facility where i take my vehicles for service. the diagnosis came back that the transmission is failing and it needed to be rebuilt. estimated cost is $3000-$4000. this vehicle was recalled in 2004 for it's transmission, it has less than 15000 miles. i don't know what the fix was by freeway honda in santa ana, ca. today it is 96500 miles. what is american honda's responsibility? apparently the fix did not help in prolonging the durability of the transmission. what is the best course of action available to me. *tr
I was driving on highway 95 south when my car would not accelerate while i was in the middle lane. i quickly attempted to switch to the right lane as there were many cars and trucks on the highway. i finally pulled the car over to the shoulder when it began to smoke. i do not believe it was a fire, but i am not sure. i do believe it was the transmission. this transmission was replaced by honda about 6 years ago b/c of a faulty transmission. *tr
Vehicle transmission failed during trip. this was after honda dealer performed necessary maintenance on vehicle. *tr
Vehicle taken to honda dealer to address multiple safety recalls, including a recall titled, "2002-2004 odyssey; 2003-2004 pilot automatic transmission 2nd gear", that has been left unaddressed for 11 years. the vehicle has a documented history (by the dealer and personal receipts) of being serviced multiple times during that period at the honda dealer where the vehicle was purchased new (single owner). the recall states mechanical defects in the transmission can cause 2nd gear chipping, and, "gear failure could result in transmission lock-up, and a crash could occur without warning". i (original owner of vehicle) was unaware the honda dealer did not address the recall until this year, when i used the honda owner website to lookup open recalls on the vehicle. upon learning of the open recall, and the severity of the potential issue, i immediately contacted the dealer for maintenance. on 2014-07-18, the dealer confirmed the recall had not been performed, then informed me they are unable to perform the recall. i opened a case with honda america, who over the course of 4 weeks, first indicated that the issue i described (since owning the vehicle, shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear would "stutter") was not related, therefore the recall would not be performed. i replied the recall is not conditional to the consumer experience, and must be performed. honda america then replied the transmission had been replaced, and was not covered by the recall. after more than a week, the dealer agreed to provide the serial number of the transmission, confirming it was the original honda part. most recently, honda america claims that an inspection port on the transmission has been altered, and therefore the recall is not applicable. i have 11 years of records with the dealer (exclusive provider of maintenance to the vehicle), and none indicate recall or modification performed. *tr
I left stevens point , wisconsin to go to chicago ilinois with my family... three adults.. to young children... got to madision stopped at target..got back in car left.. got back on highway and the car started to buck.. like it was going in and out of gear... racing then down shifting on its own.. threw the flashers on got off the highway... found a fire stone garage and they check it . the engine pic came on also and tcs light... the mechanic told us the codes that read mean the transmission and it is not recognized what gear it should be in.. they do not do transmission repair.. so we found a way to get it home which cost us 250.00 dollars... she also mention i should check recalls on this because i only bought the van awhile ago.. it was used... from a dealership .. courtesy honda in stevens point... if there is not..my mechanic stated that there should be because this should not happen.. and we are all lucky to be alive.. cause the car kept going to park.. and if it did stop we would of had a bad accident.... please get back to me asap... the car is un-drivable .. *tr
While driving on the expressway, the tcs and check engine lights came on, the transmission down shift to lower gear abruptly. the car behind almost hit my car. it was a scary situation. after checking the codes, it showed p0730 and p0780 related to shift solenoid. and there are numerous complaints on the web with the same transmission problem due to fault material clogging the filter inside the transmission. this is a very unsafe issue since it could be no warning before it happens to the driver on high speed. *tr
Started experiencing bucking and stalling. the "d" light flashed, and multiple lights came on. while driving, the unit will continue to jump, especially on the downshift. manufacturer lists the transmission as having been replaced, but the mileage is still way low for having had two transmissions. am looking at installing a rebuilt one. this is too short a time period. after the first round of troubles with this vehicle and the transmission, the replacement should have been bulletproof! *tr
