Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2005 Honda Accord

Over 6 months ago, i noticed that the light which shows what gear you are in on the shift column on the floorboard wasn't staying lit. sometimes it would come on when i started the car and other times not. sometimes if i thumped on the shifter on purpose, it would come back on. then several weeks ago my radio stopped working. at first there was no sound but then a very loud weird noise started happening and it is extremely loud. the only way to stop the noise is to turn the radio off. then at other times you turn on the radio and it works fine. not long after that i was driving one night and all the lights on the dash flicked off and on again very quickly. it did it several times during my 3 hour trip and then stopped and i hadn't noticed it again until today. today my husband was driving and the check engine light came on and stayed on. i know sometimes if you don't click your fuel cap three times after refueling it can cause the light to come on but i have not refueled in several weeks. a few minutes later the abs light came on, went off and then came on again. shortly after this, all the lights on the dash flashed on and off again several times very quickly. the battery is not that old and this can happen whether it's wet or dry conditions. the user manual said the check engine light is emission related but there are so many other things happening that i wonder if this is some sort of electrical problem. it is scary when it happens because suddenly all the lights on the dash cannot be seen so you can't see the speedometer needle or anything. it's ok if it happens in daylight but is truly unsafe if it happens at night. *tr

Supplemental restraint system indicator light remains (intermittently) illuminated beyond the normal time after starting vehicle. the problem appears to be the same as described in other "complaints" published in nhtsa recall campaign id number 07v001000. according to local honda dealership, this vehicle is not part of the recall group and does not qualify for cost free remediation by honda. *tr

Instrument lights in panel for hvac/audio system are not lit. one night they stopped working. exact same issue as this: make: honda model: accord year: 2005 complaint number: 10241768 summary: the audio unit display lights do not come on when the headlights are turned on. the radio dial, clock, and hvac control switches are not lit. the only light on in the area is the small green light showing which hvac button has been selected. the instrument panel lights do light up are controllable with the dimmer switch. this problem came on suddenly - one night they worked when i turned on the headlights and the next night they did not work. so far this is a consistent problem. i have checked the fuses; none were blown. as a driver i can cope with the problem this time of the year, but as winter sets in and the windshield needs to be cleared of interior fog with the defroster i will not be able to see which control to hit creating an unsafe situation. this was/is a problem with earlier model years (2003-2004) of this model run. in 2007 honda issued a 7 year/100,000 mile warranty extension letter for these years. there is also a service bulletin for these repairs. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda accord. the contact stated while driving approximately 70 mph, the horn was depressed and failed. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the horn and driver's side air bag needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. however, the contact was concerned about the method used to replace the air bag. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 34,000.

Hello, i am very upset/concerned because i have an 2005 honda accord. i know multiple people with different years of an accord along with one person with an 05. we are all having the same issue with our windows rolling up and down. i have been working on this issue sine 2010, and broke down and paid for the repair today. the main switch went out in the car. the main window works but the rest of the windows don't work. why is this not considered a recall? several people are having the same issue. i don't feel like i should of paid for the repair today, however i had no choice. i think that this is something honda needs to look into, also the factory stereos. my stereo went out a couple of weeks ago, i have only one person that experienced this problem, but i think it needs to be looked into. *tr

Engine stalls while the car is moving, steering wheel blocks. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda accord. while driving the vehicle intermittently stalls without any prior warnings. the vehicle has been taken to the dealer several times. his vehicle was repaired according to recall #07v097000 (fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump) . however the repair did not remedy the failure. the dealer then updated the ecm. a week later the failure resurfaced. a technician had to repair the wiring harness from underneath of the ignition, but the vehicle continued to fail. the manufacuturer was notified, but no assistance was provided. the failure and current mileages were 68,0000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 honda accord. while driving approximately 30 mph on normal road conditions, the engine stalled without warning. the engine restarted and the vehicle resumed normal operation. the contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing and nhtsa campaign id numbers 05v132000 (electrical system;uses circuit breakers) and 07v097000 (fuel system, gasoline;delivery:fuel pump) were discovered. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and they stated that the vin was not included in the recalls, although the failures were identical. currently, the fuse box is being replaced at the contact's expense. the vin was unknown. the failure and current mileages were 60,000.

Starting at around 70k miles, the radio display backlight does not light up intermittently. although the radio and controls work, it is impossible to view the time, radio volume, or station number without the assistance of an independent light source such as the overhead light. there has been a recall for this issue for the 2003-2004 model year. this recall should be extended to the 2005 model year as well because there is no major difference in audio unit design. *tr

I was driving my honda accord 2005 ex to work today from burke to ft belvoir, va, and 25 minutes into the drive, the car stalled on fairfax county in the passing lane. this has happened twice, each about 3 weeks apart. when the car stalls, the ignition immobilizer switch light immediately flashes. i have to stop the moving car, and restart it, which is extremely dangerous. i called honda, and was told that there is not a recall for this symptom. the symptoms is similar to what is referenced on this website. http://www.visualimpressions.ca/switch/. *tr

The audio unit display lights go dim 1-2 minutes after the headlights are turned on. the radio dials and hvac control switches also go completely out. the only light on in the area is the small green light showing which hvac button has been selected. the instrument panel lights do light up and are controllable with the dimmer switch. i have checked the fuses; none were blown. i can cope with the problem by turning on the interior overhead light to see the controls.just very inconvenientand creating a unsafe condition. this is a problem with earlier model years (2003-2004) of this model run. in 2007 honda issued a 7 year/100,000 mile warranty extension letter for these years. there is also a service bulletin for these repairs. perhaps honda should havne extended this warranty extension to include the 2005 models. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 honda accord. the contact had a 40,000 mile repair performed at the dealer. four days later, the gauge control module shorted out internally. the dealer attempted to reprogram the module, but was unsuccessful. the module was sent out to paolo alto, ca to be reprogrammed. once it was completed, the module was returned to the dealer for installation in the vehicle. a couple of months later, while driving at an unknown speed with the cruise control activated, it would not disengage when the brake pedal was depressed. the vehicle was locked in the cruise control mode and it continued moving towards oncoming traffic. the contact lost control of the vehicle and crashed into two vehicles. the contact and another person were injured. the vehicle was destroyed. a police report was filed. the investigator stated that the instrument cluster module caused the crash. the failure mileage was 40,000.

The audio unit display lights do not come on when the headlights are turned on. the radio dial, clock, and hvac control switches are not lit. the only light on in the area is the small green light showing which hvac button has been selected. the instrument panel lights do light up are controllable with the dimmer switch. this problem came on suddenly - one night they worked when i turned on the headlights and the next night they did not work. so far this is a consistent problem. i have checked the fuses; none were blown. as a driver i can cope with the problem this time of the year, but as winter sets in and the windshield needs to be cleared of interior fog with the defroster i will not be able to see which control to hit creating an unsafe situation. this was/is a problem with earlier model years (2003-2004) of this model run. in 2007 honda issued a 7 year/100,000 mile warranty extension letter for these years. there is also a service bulletin for these repairs. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 honda accord. while driving approximately 65 mph, all of the warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. the engine abruptly shut off and the vehicle could not be restarted. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who stated that the failure was related to the battery. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred twice more. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic again and the alternator was replaced; however, there was no resolution to the malfunction. recently, the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and they stated that the failure was related to the air condition system component. the vehicle was repaired and there had been no further occurrences. the failure mileage was 34,000 and current mileage was 34,300. updated 10/14/08 *bf updated 10/23/08. *jb

Car refuses to start. used a jumpstart from a friend to come home. checked the battery charge indicator - shows green (meaning fully charged) - but car does not start with that battery. replaced the battery with a new one and there seems to be other problems. dashboard light seem to flicker every now and then. not sure what the exact issue is. *tr

I have owned a 2005 honda accord since sept. 2005. both of the car key casements have broken without abuse during this time. now that may seem trivial, but they do so without warning due to extremely bad design/engineering. they seem to have been designed to fail. to replace them i have been told that each key would cost $67 and the programming another $88. without the case being attached to the key, the ignition will not operate. if someone were somewhere in the country along way from civilization, what would one do? this is why i am complaining, and why this is a safety issue. the price for replacement is also outrageous. *tr

If you leave the radio on for more than 2 minutes with the car off, it refuses to start. either must jump start or wait 10 minutes or so before the engine will start again. this has happened 4-5 times. after starting, everything is good until you happened to do this again. *tr

Six changer cd player overheats. after 30 seconds of playing time , the panel turns extremely hot and cd error message flashes. when the cd is removed, it is extremely hot to the touch where it must be placed on the passenger seat. if more than one cd is in the six cd changer, the panel gets very hot and subsequently the panel display goes blank. the radio will not work until the unit has cooled. there is a potential danger for fire or other system failure. clearly a safety hazard.*cn

I have a 2005 honda accord hybrid. the ima battery has spontaneously discharged. no one knows where the electrical current is going when this happens. *tr

Our 2005 honda accord severely overheated while driving in extremely congested traffic on a nearly 100 degree day. the dealer, where the car has been serviced continuously since new, verified that there was no fuse for the cooling fan. there is no credible answer for this absence. *tr

My vehicle was parked in the parking lot of a grocery store. i was on my home from work and had stopped to purchase a few items. the engine was turned off. i had been in the store for about 10 minutes when i heard the loudspeaker asking for the owner of a 2005 gold honda accord to come to the customer service counter. when i approached the person behind the counter, he asked me to look outside to see if the vehicle on fire was, in fact, my car. smoke was coming from the engine of my car and two vehicles from the fire department were trying to put out the fire. the car was totaled. honda insisted it was my fault, but i found out much later that engine fires had occurred in other 2005 accords. state farm gave me the replacement value for the vehicle, but it wasn't enough to purchase a car of equal value. the honda accord was still under warranty. i felt i should have been compensated for the entire cost of the car. plus, if the fire had occurred while i was driving, i might not be here writing this letter to you. i was just recently made aware of some of the recalls from honda for this exact problem. i believe honda should take ownership of this problem and compensate me fairly for my loss. i have the vin number and all of the paperwork from state farm, including photos of the damage to car taken after the fire. *tr

4/13/2007. 2005 hybrid. consumer states that the vehicle operates with gas or the nickel-metal hydride battery pack. the ima battery leaked fumes and the fumes corroded locking the mechanism of the trunk. *mc the door release cable for the gas door had to be replaced. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while parked in a driveway, the vehicle's ignition did not start. the contact tried to start the vehicle 4 times, with no success. a slight loss of vehicle power was noticed while starting up, a day prior to the incident. neither the dealer nor the manufacturer were contacted.

Dt*: the contact stated that when the vehicle is started, there is a zapping noise coming from below the steering wheel, accompanied by a smell of burning plastic. the vehicle was taken to a service dealer where the dealer was unable to determine the problem.

Dt*: the contact stated during sudden, hard braking the vehicle pulled to the right. then a few days later, during normal braking, the vehicle pulled to the left. the dealership was unable to determine a problem. then while traveling 30 mph on a slushy downhill road the brake pedal was depressed and the brakes did not respond. the vehicle rear ended another vehicle. there was a police report taken at the scene. the driver received minor injuries. the vehicle was driven to the dealership, where repairs were made for property damage. the dealership was unable to determine the problem with the brakes. the vehicle was taken to another dealership and an independent repair shop, which was unable to determine the problem as well. there was a rough idle when coming to a stop. the headlights flicker at times. updated 07/05/06. *jb

Car security alarm system activated while car was in motion(engine running). dash activation indicator light came on(blinking) both doors locked. stopped car opened driver side door and alarm went off---horn sounded, lights flashed. disconnected battery to stop alarm. dealer notified and letter sent to honda. *jb

Radio reception. we have the accord with the satellite/radio combination with a cd player. the antenna is located in the rear window. the radio reception, in either am or fm is unacceptable. the local honda garage has offered to replace the radio but insists that the problem is in the antenna design. the reception is terrible. stations that are easily heard in other vehicles we own or have owned is simply much better. this is annoying at best. i would not have purchased this vehicle had i known the radio reception was so bad.*jb

Dt: contact states after driving her vehicle approximately 10 minutes there was a loud knocking noise coming from the engine, causing the vehicle to vibrate. the service dealer could not find what was wrong with the vehicle. the service dealer did replace a speaker because he thought this might fix the problem. this did not remedy the problem. . vehicle had been to the service dealer on 3 separate occasions, totaling approximately 15 days.*ak

There are no any illuminating lights on for radio and a/c back lights when we turned on the head light. it was reported same issue for 2003 and 2004 honda accord, and honda offer 7 years or 100,000 miles extend warranty. we are not sure how many this cases for 2005 honda accord. it is really a big flaw related our safety, but we did not know that at all when we bought it. let me make it clear: our car is 2005 accord lx has 53,000 miles on it, has been 8 years since we bought it. when head light is on, its radio and a/c back light is dark. *tr
