Problems with 2012 GMC Terrain ENGINE

On average, the 2012 GMC Terrain starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 78 001 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2012 GMC Terrain

As i was driving home from work on 2/1/18 on i94 at 72 mph, my car starting sputtering and smoking. it then started making a very loud noise and my warning light came on saying to shut off my engine. the engine shut off and i had to coast to the shoulder of the interstate. i called roadside assistance who sent a tow truck and towed me to my mechanic's garage. the mechanic looked at it the next morning and advised there was a hole in the engine block and all the oil leaked out of the hole, leaving oil all over the undercarriage of my vehicle. i filed an insurance claim, the insurance adjustor looked at it monday and deemed it to be mechanical failure. i have 110,000 miles on the vehicle.

Just purchased this vehicle 5 months ago and have a major oil leak which is going to cost over $1000, mechanic told me there is a recall 14882 called gmc customer service and was told my vin is not covered. how do you have a recall for the same year make model but not all are included but all having the same issue? this is a serious issue and the vehicle needs to be recalled before someone get seriously hurt, especially when the vehicle is just cutting off in traffic

Janurary 7th 2018 my 2012 gmc terrain ran out of oil even though it was already fixed 6 months prior for special adjustment coverage 16118 which had pistons, piston rings, timing chain etc. fixed to repair the oil consumption issue (see adjustments 14882 and 16118. coverage 14882 is a result of failure to correctly fix the 16118 and is a direct result of 14882 and gmc states they will cover me if this happens. gmc customer service says my vin # is not covered under this coverage. if its the same exact issue for (model/engine) why would vin # matter? on top of that i took my vehicle to another dealer (dealership b) as i brought my vehicle to lets call it dealership a so many times before with the same issue. dealership b filled it with oil and sent me on my way. i told them to make sure the issue was fixed. they said they test drove it and everything is fine and they didnt do anything but put oil in it and test. on the way home jan. 7th the same day the car starting dying on me, stalling and making popping noises and jerking wildly which is why i brought it in the first place. dealership b knowing dealership a "fixed" this issue 6 months before so they said they would not fix it even though they know for sure this issue was caused by coverage 14882. i told dealership a this and they said they are only going with what gmc says which is that my vin # is not covered but they were willing to split the cost with me (roughly $850, admitting partial fault, lol) i said no and then pleaded with them that i shouldnt pay anything cause im covered. they ended the conversation with the vehicle is not covered because coverage 16882 is not related in any way to 14882 but even gmc and dealership b says they are directly related. who is lying here? i pay $450 a month for a giant suv that sits in my garage. gmc is knowingly breaking the law, how can they do this to so many people?

On jan 1st it was 3f out my wife wormed up her terrain we drove it approximately 12 miles when we started to smell something burning. next came the engine knocking really bad. we stopped the terrain and had it towed to the dealership found out the rear main seal blew with such force that the oil covered the muffler. this happened from the pcv being plugged and/or frozen from the cold weather. i recently found a service bulletin for that year make and model that indicates that will happen and there is a special coverage for that.(14882: special coverage adjustment) i also received a letter from gmc about high oil consumption warranty. the terrain may exhibit engine oil consumption. that is also a part of that 14882:adjustment now to the point i was told that this issue my wife's terrain would be covered under the 100k/5year power train warranty our terrain only has 71k miles on it. but the 5year are up. so gm is not taking responsibility for this issue according to both special coverage the 14882: they adjusted to 10 years or 120k miles but they are claiming even though its for that year make and model and engine and that everything that's listed is what happened to our gmc its not for our terrain. i told them i also had a letter that they sent to us stating the oil consumption that has a adjustment of 7years 6months/120k warranty witch was part of that 14882: special coverage they still will not take responsibility for fixing. i believe we are getting taken advantage of in this situation. they are making us pay for all repairs it may need a new engine in result of the rear seal blowing because it lost all the oil. but we would not know till the repairs start or after all repairs are made and the engine seizes. i also was told from the dealer that if we fix it and drive it down the road there is no guaranty that it will not happen again.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 gmc terrain. while the vehicle was at a stop light, it stalled. the vehicle was restarted and functioned normally. the contact also mentioned that the oil consumption was high. every 1,800 miles, oil needed to be added to the vehicle and an abnormal noise was detected. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the timing chain was failing and a motor flush was performed. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing or repairs. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 154,000.

The rear main seal comprimised and caused the low oil pressure stip engine light to come on. my mechanic added oil and it poured out. he tried to get the part and he could only locate at dealersgip 200 miles awat. apparebtly this has been occurring often with vehicles with this engine.

I received a recall letter from gmc about a knocking in the engine which just started happening in my vehicle. the recall does not show up when the dealer checked the vin number in the computer. but before i could take my car in to be checked my engine died when i arrive at work which is 25 miles from my home. i had it towed to a gmc dearlership and was informed that my timing chain jumped and threw valve timing off causing internal engine failure.. i then had to replace the engine in a 5 year old vehicle, my warranty expired 3/2017 so this was not covered. when i called gmc i was told they may be able to cover some of the cost but since i did not replace the engine with another gmc engine which would have cost more i had to pay out of my pockets for this.

Vehicle check engine light came on at 50,000 miles, would not pass inspection. computer did not show what problem was. car would cut off in drive in idle. car would shake. mechanics put in new parts and battery for more than $1200. still was not fixed. mechanic went to a dealership to inquire if they had seen this problem. at the dealership it was discovered that many of the parts that would cause the problem were on recall. gm had not posted these recalls or notified me, the owner. after inspecting the car they said there was too much wrong to repair and the entire engine would need to be replaced. they said i would need to drive 2000 miles to check oil consumption. they never made us aware there may be problem with the oil consumption. i am 68 yrs old and walk with a walker. i am in the hospital often. the mechanics said they would drive the car as much as they thought necessary to determine oil consumption. while driving the vehicle in charlotte nc the car started smoking and caught fire. the driver forced his way out but had that been me, i probably would have died due to my handicap. i have now been without a vehicle for over a month. i have contacted gm but they are slow for any resolution. i asked for a loaner vehicle but was told they couldn't do that now.

Purchased 2012 gmc terrain. started running poorly and eventually check engine light came on. was unable to get an inspection sticker so i took it to gm dealer. i was told that i needed timing chain replaced. $1800. i then asked if it could have anything to do with the recal letter l recieived that specified excessive oil consumption. the dealer advised me it had nothing to do with timing chain. i refused to pay and took it to my own mechanic. he found lack of oil and sludge in my engine. after flushing it out and putting new oil in the check engine light went off. i then took it back to gm and requested oil consumption test. the dealer determined that my vehicle burned 1 quart of oil at 1000 miles. the vehicle failed the consumption test. they now have advised me that they are replacing pistons, rings and timing chain. very frustrated that i was lied to about this issue and have spent alot of money out of pocket that was totally not needed to be spent.

Timing belt stretched and jumped. cylinder head broken. timing belt jumped while driving, began making a very loud rattling noise.

I bought my vehicle brand new and have records of every maintenance done in a timely manner. on 03/31/2017, i drove 38 miles to a furniture store with my 11 month old baby and wife. when i returned to my car, it would not start. when i turn the car on, it clicks but no power goes to the engine. there was no engine light on and no indication that something was wrong with the vehicle. i ended up towing it to a gmc dealership. they did inspection and advised the timing chain broke and had a chain effect braking rods in the engine. they also mentioned something about the engine oil burning. i was advised by the gm dealers that the whole engine will need to be replaced and advised my warranty expired on 1/14/2017. i contacted gm customer service and have opened a case file but i am not sure if they will do anything to assist me. i did some research online and it appears multiple customers who have owned gmc terrain have had similar issues. if the timing chain broke while i was driving, it is quite possible there might have been a fatality and i or my family might not be alive today.

The check engine lights continually comes one and off. at first, when my husband turned on the truck and saw the check engine light we took it in and the error was for 1 coil pack. it was fine for a month, then after starting the truck again the check engine light came on, and we replaced all of the coil packs. now when we start the truck, the check engine light may be on or off. at least once a week, when we start the truck the check engine light will be on. this issue has been reoccurring and has been going on for close to a year. the last 5 or 6 times we had it put on the machine there have been no errors found and our mechanic's baffled. especially since the truck may stutter or become sluggish or shut off like before whenever the check engine light comes back on. if something is wrong with our vehicle but no errors are found we have no clue if there is truly something occurring and if it's causing serious damage and harm to our family. our vehicle was manufactured in canada and we aren't sure if there could be issues being reported in canada that we don't know about. in addition, there are recalls that we weren't notified of but nothing pertaining to this issue.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 gmc terrain. while driving 55 mph, the check engine indicator illuminated. also, the vehicle would occasionally fail to start with the remote starter. the vehicle was taken to an auto part store and different failure codes appeared. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 95,000.

Timing chain jumping off of sprockets and eating away at the chain guides and tensioners.

I have had this car for less than a year, bought from a dealer, and i have checked the background to which there have not been any type of accident or damage from what was provided to me. it randomly started shaking uncontrollably and shutting off while i was driving. now mind you, as a pregnant woman driving on the highway, this is not safe. my engine light turned on. though i could have gotten in an accident, by the grace of god people moved out the way and allowed me to get off and to the side.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 gmc terrain. the contact stated that the vehicle operated abnormally. the dealer diagnosed that the malfunction was due to excessive oil consumption. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 105,649.

The vehicle has excessive oil consumption. i have to add 3 qts between every oil change to bring it back to the correct level. i know when it needs this because the valve train gets very loud as it is starved for lubrication. it also will have irregular rpm levels from time to time as well as hard starts. vehicle has 40k miles on it. i have been having to do this for the last 10-12k miles until i heard of this bulletin. *tr

On the 2.4l ecotec engine, the pcv orifice in the intake manifold becomes clogged which causes oil to be pulled into the engine combustion chamber and burned. this causes an excess build up of carbon inside the engine and on the spark plugs which in turn causes the vehicle to idle roughly and stall out while sitting idle, such as at a stop light. gm has issued a special coverage service bulletin (#: 14882) but only for specific vin's. it has become known that there are many other vehicles that fall under the year groups stated by gm in their service bulletin, even if it's a vin that they deem is safe from the problem, but they refuse to recall the vehicles even if they are affected by the known problem. this is a safety issue that causes the vehicle to die while trying to leave from a stationary position once the engine has warmed up, for example passing through an intersection after a red light. *tr

Takata recall, i thought that i had excessive oil leakage because there was no oil, when i just had a oil change the day before, but it had to be a excessive engine oil consumption, on my way from work i heard a very loud noise from my engine, and and a pop, on my dashboard was signaling oil pressure is low - stop engine, throughout the hold ordeal there was smoke coming into the car, when i was able to get to car dealer ship, i was charged $3400.00 to have the car fix. then i receive a letter from gmc stating that they were doing a recall on 2012 terrain relating to the same issue that was listed in the letter that was sent to me. they reject my reimbursement due to the fact that they saying the oil had to burning on the engine, and not excessive oil leakage, when in fact there was burning oil on my engine, which i feel cause the smoke within my vehicle, also the manager at mike anderson also said gmc rejected my claim due to the part numbers then match up to part numbers they have listed on the recall, when i view the list, it did list different number but the parts was the same, the car was in motion i was on the highway 294 going east to merrillville indiana, which almost caused me to have a accident in which i happen to avoid.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 gmc terrain. while driving approximately 35 mph, there was an abnormal noise coming from the engine and the vehicle started to decelerate. the contact coasted into a parking lot and noticed an oil odor around the vehicle. the contact noticed that the vehicle was leaking oil all over the parking lot. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the pcv valve was frozen and was not circulating caused by excessive pressure leaking out oil. the intake manifold and cam cover needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 11,000. the consumer requested an update of the investigation concerning the vehicle's pcv valve. *js

Excessive oil consumption 3k miles 2 quarters of oil consumption

Excessive engine oil consumption 2 quarters per every 3000 miles. vehicle is now 71k miles i changed the oil 3 weeks ago and it was missing 2.5 quarters of oil i have driven the car around 800 miles after the oil change and is half way on the deep stick am afraid if i keep driving it for 3 to 4k miles it will be very low on oil again and i purchased this car 7 months ago fro the dealership and it had 55k miles at the time i always noticed to be low of motor oil and i thought it was normal but it's getting worse by the time going by. i think is too soon to be burning motor oil at those low miles.

Oil consumption issue: i realized about 3 months ago that my car engine would shake a bit on start up and during idle. i took it into the dealership for a diagnostic test and was told that there was very little oil in the car and that it was burnt. i was very surprised because i have never had an issue like this before. so we got an oil change and that was that. engine still shook on idle and during startup. 5000 miles later i realize that it is time for an oil change and check the dip stick and find that nothing appears on it, indicating that it is short at least 1.25 quarts. i fill it up with 0.5 quarts and still nothing on the dip stick. i have looked online and seen that many others have had this issue of oil consumption with 2010-2013 terrains and that there is a bulletin on it (below): http://gm.oemdtc.com/1893/excessive-oil-consumption-2010-2013-buick-chevrolet-gmc#comment-1224 i call the dealership and the gmc customer service line, check my vin and they say there are no recalls on my car. what am i to do? this is an ongoing issue that many others have complained about in bulletins and on the website above. i feel that this issue has done its damage on the engine and is going to cost me thousands to repair. *tr

I have a gmc 2012 slt 1 with 2.4 cylinder car that i bought in 2011. it has 75k miles now. recently got to know from my dealer that there is a issue with the engine oil consumption and piston needs to be replaced and was referred to a special coverage information for 2011 vehicle with similar issue but not for a 2012 vehicle - http://gm.oemdtc.com/3953/15285-excessive-engine-oil-consumption-2011-chevrolet-equinox-gmc-terrain if my 2012 car bought in 2011 is also giving the same problem as confirmed by certified gmc service dealer, then why is it not covered under gm's special coverage. vin: [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Engine stalls when at low idle while reducing speed i.e., at stop light. will immediately restart and stall when placed into drive or reverse. hade camshaft position sensor intake replaced. stalling resumed within two weeks and now check engine light is on.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 gmc terrain. while idling, the vehicle suddenly stalled and shut off. while driving at various speeds, the dashboard lights suddenly began to dim and the speed reduced to 15 mph. the "engine power reduced" message appeared. the vehicle was taken to the dealer on several occasions and the electronic control module was replaced and the throttle body was cleaned, but the failures continued. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the failure mileage was 32,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 gmc terrain. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle suddenly lost acceleration power. the contact also stated that while at a stop the engine stalled. the failure occurred on two different occasions. the vehicle was towed to the dealer both the times where it was diagnosed that the entire engine and the transmission needed to be replaced. the contact stated that only the engine was replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 106,122.

Fuel sensor issue. i took my car to gmc dealership to get the battery replaced after only 4 years and while they had it the fuel sensor went out and i could not tell how much gas i had in the car. they would not repair it because they claimed it went out on its on.

My 2012 gmc terrain 2.4l is having an issue with excessive oil consumption. i am constantly having to check my oil and it gets to 1 qt or more low between my 5k oil changes. i've seen multiple complaints with this. because of this i have a check engine light on indicating my catalytic converter may be bad. ive had the car for about three years. it shouldn't need the catalytic converter already. my car is due for smog next month and i've akready had to repmace the intake and exhaust sensors on the engine because of the oil issue. this happens while car is in motion being driven. it is eating up oil.

At low idle or when backing up and accelerating vehicle the engine stalls. this typically occurs after driving car for 10-15 minutes. engine light appears. it will continue to stall unless holding down brake & accelerator at same time. stops stalling when speed increases, but stalls on low speeds & backing up continually. code indicates camshaft adjuster sensor. first sensor replaced. problem occurred again immediately after leaving garage. second sensor replaced. problem occurred once again! mechanic thinks it could be ground wiring issue is burning up the camshaft sensors. the car is not safe to drive.

I have had nothing but problems with my oil consumption on my vehicle, when i first got the vehicle, it started making some noises and i didn't know what it was , until i took it in to have it looked at, it was low on oil, so i had to pay for the oil change and the fee to have it looked at, for oil consumption test, i have only had the vehicle for 1 1/2 years and the oil consumption is astronomical, seems like i have to have an oil change every 2 months and i have to add oil seems live every 1000 miles, this is a major problem, with the 2011 gmc terrain and i think they need to recall these vehicles or fix the problem, i just go an oil change 11/2017 and was low on oil 12/2017, so i had to add oil again, until it is time to have my oil change. now my car is leaking oil and so i have to take it in again, i have had to have my camshafts fixed 2 times, this is a problem. i am not rich, but i have to incur the charge. i still have 5 years left to pay this car off. i just wanted to voice my concern with this vehicle.

I was traveling on the toll way and went to pass a vehicle going below the speed limit. upon acceleration (approx 53 mph), i heard a muffled pop in the engine compartment and white smoke trailed the vehicle. no warning lights went off prior and i do not recall seeing any after the "pop". i stopped the vehicle and turned off the engine, opened the hood to find flames under the engine in vicinity of the oil pan. i was unable to put out the flames and the fire consumed the vehicle. i vehicle was well maintained and have no idea what the origin of the fire was.

Excessive oil burn with no warning of low oil until about one quart left in engine. only check engine light came on. yes the manual says check oil at every fill up but after owning many cars over 38 years without this problem it would seem the manual was written to protect gm. i would not have purchased the vehicle if i knew i had to put in a quart of oil every 1500 miles. google this. im not the only one.

Within two days' time, my 2012 gmc terrain stalled four different times, all at low speeds. the first time was backing out of the driveway; the other three happened the following day starting up from city street intersections. my concern is being rear-ended in those situations, or beginning to make a left hand turn in front of oncoming traffic thinking you have enough time and then having the car stall. another concern is having the stalling issue occur at higher speeds, although that never happened to me. i took the car into the dealership on that second day, and they replaced the intake camshaft position actuator solenoid valve. the problem has not repeated itself since. thank you.

Vehicle was started after sitting in a parking lot for 8 hours while i was at work. season was winter. vehicle noted to be running rough, barely driveable, check engine light on.

My car jerks and stalls when idling and my foot is on the brake. i have to put the car in neutral or shut it off and restart altogether when at a stop light or when i will be doing any stopping. if not, the car jerks and stalls. this happened in downtown nashville, tn! very dangerous! reduced power notification light came on as well. i have had it in the shop multiple times and they all say it is from excess oil consumption. have already had the timing chain replaced due to said oil issue. driving this car with my kids is extremely dangerous. why is there not a recall on this? this has been an ongoing issue with my car since late 2015.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 gmc terrain. while driving various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was brought to the dealer for diagnostic testing, but the details could not be provided. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. while driving at various speeds, the vehicle began to jerk and hesitate and a loud abnormal knocking noise was heard. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the vehicle was in working condition. the contact stated that the engine failed shortly after, making the vehicle inoperable. the manufacturer was made aware of the failures. the failure mileage was 135,000.

Car started making rattling noise on startup. got worse. took to a few car places and thought it was the oil. but the oil was fine. then the engine light came on and a second later the car shut off while i was diving down the road with my two babies!! very dangerous! ran into a friend who has the same make and model car as mine and said she had the exact same problems. has 80k miles and has already changed the timing belt five times. car just shuts off. extremely dangerous! i will report this to everyone i know and warn them.

I purchased my 2012 gmc terrain from clay cooley in irving, tx on 01/05/2015 with an extended service contract. i have had issues with this vehicle ever since. i took the vehicle in for service and was told the service contract would not cover my issue and that the issue was caused by lack of maintenance, which is not the case as i maintain the oil in this vehicle and even had to purchase a new battery for the vehicle recently. i am attaching a picture of the condition of the battery shortly after the vehicle was sold to me to where i contacted my sales agent and he advised me to check my service contract. this car's engine repeatedly stops, especially when approaching a red light or stop sign or at the moment of acceleration. i have had to avoid many accidents due to people driving up on me because i should have been accelerating at the time but my car turned off. the battery would die on this car on a weekly basis which caused me to purchase a battery and there is still no progress in the vehicle. there are electrical issues as well as the lighting in the car gets dim when we are in the dark but bright when the sun is out. also, the seatbelt for the passenger's side constantly rings sending a notification that the seatbelt needs to be latched, even when no one else or nothing else is in that seat. i fear that one day i may need that air bag and it might not work because the seatbelt appears to be faulty. also, another issue, which is not necessarily a safety issue, but an extreme nuisance and also maybe an electrical issue is the car radio and volume will freeze at any given moment and the car has to be stopped and idle for a period of time before the radio is active and able to turn channels again. the safety issues for this car is real and i am in fear that i will get hit from behind due to the faulty engine.

Car die (stall) at idol after warmed up drive it 10 miles stop at stop sign it die restart die again may do that 3-4 times before it will take gas and run does this intermeditly run fine for half a day stop run in store come out restart and it die (no chugging just die) auto parts store said it was a crankshaft sensor when they checked what had the check engine light on (note check engine light not come on each time it stalls)

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 gmc terrain. while driving approximately 2 mph in reverse, the contact heard an abnormal noise coming from the engine. the contact pulled over and found that the engine dipstick was dry. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the pistons and rings failed to clean the cylinder walls. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that it was not a known issue. the contact spoke to varney buick gmc mazda (260 hogan rd, bangor, me 04401) who advised the contact to continue adding oil to the vehicle until it could be repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 77,000.

The vehicle has been in the shop for 10 to 12 times due to failure with the engine misfiring as well as traction control lights and stability trac as well as transmission not shifting right and loss of power while driving on major highways and brought into the dealership where they tell me they can find or make the problem reappear. but have shown the dealership service department video and have had 3 general motor techs that they hired from hp and been told the vehicle is safe and that there will be no more problems but have been in the vehicle while the problems have happened and have it on video to the point where i almost lost my life yesterday night. the vehicle is a death trap and many customers including myself on gmc terrain forum as well as online have had the same problem and have been told the same thing that it is nothing to worry about but it is. please help have been told by gm to keep my mouth shut they would offer me 5,000 dollars for my troubles and that my kids are worth that much from a legal advisor at general motors legal. have ask to be taking out of the vehicle for something safe and still i'm being told no......please help
