Problems with 2012 GMC Terrain ENGINE

On average, the 2012 GMC Terrain starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 78 001 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2012 GMC Terrain

Complete motor failure, engine oil loose, complete loose of control. while driving down the highway, this vehicle had a sudden oil loose, no warning lights came on causing my spouse to loose all control of the vehicle nearly incurring a head on collision on a local highway at speed of 60mph. we had to have to vehicle towed to a local shop and is no longer drivable and the motor is ruined. the vehicle only has 83,000 miles and all evidence of motor failure appears to be on the manufactures behalf, as the motor over pressurized and lost all oil and didn't have a safety warning, this could have killed my spouse or others. i have attached photos for review

While driving on highway the message came on losing oil pressure, shut engine off. by the time i was able to pull off the highway to the side the engine ceased up. oil gasket blew off.

Vehicle shuts off when slowing to a stop and have to restart in order to accelerate. that was looked at and 'fixed' and now the vehicle shakes when slowing down and headlights dim as if it is trying not to shut off. engine is very rough and rattles while starting to accelerate and accelerating. when brakes are pushed the car starts to turn off while in motion. when stopped, car shakes and there is a very hard knocking coming from the engine.

My terrain is stalling really bad some days and sometimes no problems at all. it does it more when going into reverse, i have to keep giving gas to get backed up. it has also died on me when i slow to a stop like at a light. this is really frustrating!!

I was driving my 2012 gmc terrain and as soon as i slowed down or stopped my car would shut off and i would have to try to restart it. fortunately, i made it home without having to stop. as i was turning in my driveway it shut off again. onstar suggests it may be a timing issue. help! i took it to the dealership to get a new battery and when i got my car back the fuel sensor was not working. it was working before they got it and gmc collierville refused to fix it.i can't afford all these major repairs and will not by another if gmc does not resolve the consumer's issues.

I received an oil change at the dealership, within less than a thousand miles i checked my oil and it was completly dry,no oil on the dipstick at all. i added 2 quarts of oil during that weekend and then went to dealership the next day. when i went to dealership they told me my oil was about .5 quart overfilled after having an oil change 1000 miles prior, adding 2 quarts of oil additionally and only returning to have them check it a day later. so leaving the dealership i was told to drive 1000 miles then return to have them check it. after 1000 miles unreturned again and they told me my oil was too low. they then told me to drive another 1000 miles and return once again for another check at which time they again filled my oil to the recommended amount. i'm only st about 500 miles into the 2nd check after driving 1000 miles and i checked my oil at home this weekend and it's already low. very frustrated because if i wasnt checking it, and i was doing what inwas supposed to by getting oil changes then it seems like in less than 500 i'd be low and likely blow my engine if i continue driving not worrying about checking cause i should have plenty of oil given i had recently had an oil change and was well within the limits before needing to return for my next service. during the first waiting period to drive 1000 miles my car started knocking in the engine, was just dieing when i would take my foot off break to accelerate and overall was running very rough. recently was told some of the codes that were coming up when i had it hooked up for the check engine light being on, that the codes could be related to the oil consumption and problems it was causing for rest of car.

Car jerks and stalls when idling and foot on the brake. have to put the car in neutral when at a stop light or sign. if not, the car jerks and stalls. this started happening last month. reduced power notification light came on today along with the engine light.

At 77,894 miles, & about 3,000 miles into previous oil change, the car shut off while my wife was driving with our children in the car and stopped in the middle of the road. several attempts to re-start the engine were unsuccessful. prior to this there was no warning signs of issues such as check engine light, odd noise, etc. the car did not allow time for the vehicle to drift off the main road and created a risk of potential collision with other vehicles. luckily this occurred in a residential area and not on the highway a few minutes earlier. we had the vehicle towed to my certified mechanic and upon inspection identified there was no oil in the car. there is no sign of oil leakage, and the oil had been changed and topped off less than 3000 miles prior to this. approx. 2 years prior, we receiving the bulletin & took the vehicle to the gmc dealer, coral springs auto mall to conduct a oil consumption test. the service advisor checked the dipstick upon my return as instructed 2000 miles later & advised it "appeared" that my car did not have the issue. remembering this instance, 2 years later, while still within the special coverage warranty parameters, i had the car towed back to coral springs auto mall gmc for the repair. i am now being told by both the service manager and gmc customer care agent that since i did not bring the vehicle in sooner, they will not honor the coverage, however they do have record of the inspection on 06/06/17 but the advisor did not update the ticket with results. i am also told that based on loyalty with the dealer, they could honor the coverage, however since i do not service my car there, i have no loyalty in order for them to honor the claim and repair the vehicle. they quoted $5,800 to replace an engine they know to be faulty. due to "lack of lubrication" caused by excessive oil consumption the engine has significant internal damage.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 gmc terrain. the contact stated that the check engine warning indicator was flashing and remained illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a certified independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the sensors needed to be checked due to excessive oil burning. the contact requested the diagnosis in writing. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was not available.

Oil consumption is out of control! when i bought the suv used at 63k i could hear within 65k i need oil just from the sound of the engine. i bought a 5 qt at wal-mart because there was less than a quart on the stick. i got and oil change prior on 8-13-19 mechanic showed i was low already at 66k and wasn't due for another till 72,780 i'm at 72k and engine needs oil! hope the class action lawsuit abides to my complaint.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 gmc terrain. when the vehicle was started, the engine began to rumble and quiver. while in drive, the rumbling in the engine persisted and the vehicle shut off while stopped. the contact was able to restart the vehicle once it shut off. the vehicle was taken to schepel buick gmc (3209 w lincoln hwy, merrillville, in 46410, (219) 488-9836) where it was diagnosed that the timing chain actuators failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was approximately 93,000.

In june 9, 2019 my engine light came on in park in my driveway. june 10, 2019 i took my terrain in for service and to have the engine light looked at cavender west in san antonio, tx. where i purchased the vehicle in december 31,2018. cavender called to inform us that the timing chain was bad. i did some research because a vehicle with 60,000 miles on it shouldn't have a bad timing chain, i wouldn't think. i have called both cavender and gm with no help. i have read numerous complaints for the same issue. i had filed a case with gm about this know problem that still continues. gm is very well aware of the problem. i think this timing chain nightmare should be recalled.

Engine is using excessive oil one quart in five days. every week.

Timing chain broke at 63,000 miles probably distroying the engine. it was on a highway and in motion.

Getting a rattling/whining sound from my car, and when i come to stop it shakes an vibrates. just purchased this vehicle about 6 months ago from a dealership, i very a little worried about this vehicle. pleae advivse me on what to do. can not afford to fix any major problems. help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The vehicle has excessive oil consumption. i have to keep adding motor oil a couple weeks after doing oil change.

My car oil consumption is excessive. i have repetitive codes: p0089, p0300, p0366, p228d, p0014 and the check engine light being on. car is jerking back and forth when at a stop light. tapping noise made also. every 1000-1500 my car is always needing oil (at least 2 quarts) and i also have to put more than the usual amount of gas in it then when i first purchased.

The truck burns oil incredibly fast. due to this ongoing issue, it caused the timing chain to break and we had to spend nearly $800 for engine repairs. even after having it in the shop numerous times for the same issue, the truck still eats through oil incredibly fast and it seems to only be getting worse. i received a letter in the mail saying that there was a recall regarding this but that they would send me info through the mail on how to go about fixing this issue, but i never received anything else about the recall.

I've had this vehicle for 3+ years and right from the beginning everytime i changed the oil was told it was low and asked where it was going. my mechanic told me it was a crankshaft sensor code and just change the oil and so i did and the check engine light would go off . then one day 800 miles before i'm due to change the oil it starts jerking while stopped and check engine light came on display stated engine power reduced then it kept stalling out then when i saw an autozone store they checked the code which was the camshaft sensor again limped home and did nothing later when i started the vehicle to go to work it made an awful clanging noise and shut it off immediately had it towed to the dealership where they said it blew a rear seal and would need an 8400 dollar new engine the special warranty coverage is well known by the dealerships and to gm so why was the consumer not been notified that this could be a problem if i was told about this i would not have bought this vehicle and i guess that's what they wanted a sale.now i have a vehicle that i still have monthly payments and they want to charge me for a new engine on top of it ludricas i say

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 gmc terrain. while driving, an abnormal noise was heard between the engine and transmission. also, the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 51,000.

Rear main seal blown due to condensation freezing in such cold temperatures. this happened on my 10 minute drive home from work. engine was shut off and hasn't been restarted. mechanic stated there were at least 4 other vehicles this week with the same issue, within two shops. a recall on certain vehicles was issued, but not mine. i would like this to at least be investigated to possibly expand this recall. car will not get fixed until at least tuesday, as they are short on the bolt kit due to high demand. thank you.

High oil consumption. no leaks under car. i've to add 3 quarter of oil every week.

Vehicle was jerking at a red light with foot firmly on the brake. this happened at the base of a hill on a city street. i wasn't sure if the car would lurch into oncoming traffic. as it started driving again, it began to make a rattling and knocking noise. car then dropped a huge amount of oil on concrete. it lost power in lower speed. luckily i was able to limp home with the car. had to have it towed to dealership as it wasn't drivable.

Rear main seal leak, pvc valve freezes from water condensation and low temperatures: causing crank case gases to become highly pressurized and blow out the rear main seal of the engine causing a massive oil leak on the road to the rear tires possibly causing loss of control to the rear wheels causing the possibility of a fatal loss of control vehicle accident. other possibilities oil coating entire undercarriage of vehicle causing a vehicle fire, catistrophic engine damage causing loss of control, enviromental impact 5 quarts of oil on the highway.

This engine burns through oil at an accelerated rate. my car has 48,000 miles on it and the engine is almost dead. the car stalls or shuts off when stopped at a red light, stop sign etc.

2012 gmc terrain makes a clicking noise when pressing acceleration pedal. i habe changed oil, plugs and belts but still can't find source of tapping. also my tires are new, less then a year and constantly show low pressure. i have checked for nails but none found.

The car is a 2012 gmc terrain 2.4 liter eco tech- i found where gmc put this issue as a recall in 2015 for 7 years or 120,000 miles to be fixed for free- i bought my car from frank's gmc/chevorlet in kosciusko, ms in november 2017 with 111,000 miles on it- the issue was not mentioned and i have the carfax on the vehicle which mention all the service dates and none of which are related to this recall- also i never recieved any information by mail about this recall and had to do some digging to find out that it's not just me with the problem but so many others! i went to frank's gmc where i purchased the car and they are supposed to give me a call back about this problem but the guy i talked to had no idea what i was even talking about yet! 3 days late they wont even answer my calls and when i went into the office said they would have to get a number to call me back again which has not happened yet! we have priced a new motor and to get it put in- price of motor- $3,200 price to put it in- $1,000 warranty- 3 year with unlimited mileage- or the parts that have to be changed out are in link below if the motor wasnt replaced: https://gm.oemdtc.com/7458/special-coverage-adjustment-excessive-engine-oil-consumption-2012-chevrolet-equinox-gmc-terrain ***that's not including the timing chain which is what the problem has caused due to oil consumption from faulty piston rings not seating correctly, i burn oil and loose oil pressure resulting in a failure in the timing chain system due to the tensioner working off of oil pressure!*** i have also found that there is a class action law suit going on about this same issue at this time- please click the link below for more information regarding this: https://www.classaction.org/blog/chevy-equinox-class-action-update-settlement-talks-underway.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 gmc terrain. the contact purchased the vehicle used. both the dealer and the manufacturer did not inform the contact that there was a special recall on the vehicle regarding excessive oil consumption caused by an oil ring malfunction. the malfunction caused the engine to seize. the vehicle was taken to carbone buick gmc of utica (5700 hoatio st, utica, ny 13502, (888) 471-8416) who stated that the vehicle had 2,000 miles over the 100,000 mile limit to be covered under the special recall. the dealer, after checking with the manufacturer, offered to pay for one third of the cost to replace the engine. the repair would cost $4,000. the vehicle remained at the dealer and had not been repaired. the contact was referred by his state's attorney general's office to nhtsa. the failure mileage was 122,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 gmc terrain. while stopped at a traffic light, the vehicle stalled. the contact stated that the vehicle restarted, but stalled again and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the camshaft position sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. advantage chevrolet of bolingbrook (located at 115 s west frontage rd, bolingbrook, il 60440, (630) 243-4460) was notified of the failure. the manufacturer was not contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 59,000.

When i have my eco light at stopping or sitting it will cause the vehicle to shake or like it stall or wants to cut off cut off. when the eco is turned i don't have that problem. the engine is notown what is this problem? this happens on street not the highway on when sitting at a stop.

I also have a 2012 gmc terrain that has an oil consumption issue that has caused complete engine failure. approximately 2.5 weeks ago the car wouldnt start. engine would turn over but not start. i thought that it might be the fuel pump. had it towed to my mechanic since it has 87k miles and out of warranty. so i went to check the status of the car and the first thing i was told was there was no oil when they checked it. they added 4 quarts before trying to diagnose the problem. mind you the oil was changed 3k miles ago and oil life monitor said it had 54% life left. they ran the car for codes and the only code that came up was for the tire pressure system, also an issue with the terrain. no issue was found with fuel pump or sensors. spark plugs were replaced due to them being all fouled up. that didnt fix the issue so it was determined that it must be the timing chain jumped. at that point i had it towed again to the dealership i purchase it from. i was told it would be 125.00 to run a diagnostic. fine. so i get a call the next day that it was indeed the timing chain. i asked the service guy what would cause this and i was told poor lubrication or low oil pressure. thats when i started to explain that the first shop had to put 4qts of oil in bc it was bone dry. i asked about the vin specific letter i received last year,2017, about the oil consumption issue and isnt that why there was no oil and hence causing the timing belt to jump. he answered "no". then told that upon further inspection, the valves were bent so we were now looking at 3500 to fix or 6k to replace the engine with another problemed engine. so that is when i contacted the toll free customer service line about the situation. they told me to go back to dealership and speak to the customer experience manager.

My car consumes oil in between oil changes, catalytic converter has gone bad which should not be happening in a 2012, and rear passenger door electrical failure. they have been recalled in other areas for the oil consumption and catalytic converter but not for my specific vin number. gmc needs to recall the terrains to fix the oil consumption, catalytic converter issue, and the rear passenger doors. the oil consumption and catalytic converter are two major issues that should be fixed immediately by gmc since they know it is an issue with that year.

This vehicle continues to restart itself after i have exited and locked the vehicle. they keys are not in the ignition, the keys are in my hand. please put this vehicle on the recall list and make things right. this is getting ridiculous.

I parked my vehicle in the driveway. upon exiting the vehicle i used the key fob to lock the vehicle, it beeped and began to walk away. as i was about 10 steps from the vehicle, it beeped again as if i hit the fob and restarted itself. it literally restarted itself. they keys were not in the ignition, they were in my hand. i was unable to unlock the vehicle using the key fob and had to manually open the door using the actual key in the door lock. i was unable to turn the vehicle off by reinserting the key in the ignition. i wiggled the shifter and the car turned off. this is the fourth the car has been running while the keys were not in the ignition and it is the second time the vehicle restarted itself without the key being in the ignition. this is clearly a manufacturing issue. what are you waiting for to add this vehicle to the recall list? property damage and personal injury will eventually occur and then i will sue gmc for damages. i am officially putting gmc on notice. please recall this vehicle and fix this issue.

I parked, turned the vehicle off and exited the vehicle. the vehicle was parked for approximately an hour and a half before i re-entered the vehicle to retrieve some items from the passenger side. as i closed the door and used the key fob to lock the vehicle, it restarted itself. this has happened multiple times and the dealership tells me that it is not their issue and that it is a manufacturing issue. please add this particular vehicle to the recall call list for this issue prior to personal injury or damages occurring.

I put the vehicle in park, turned the ignition off, removed the key from the ignition and exited the vehicle. i got some items from my trunk and went about my business. i returned to my vehicle a few minutes later only to notice the lights were on and it was running. i was unable to unlock the vehicle using the key fob and had to manually unlock the door. i put the key in the ignition to turn the vehicle off again and it would not turn off. i wiggled the gear shift and it finally turned off. this is the third time this has happened. please add my vehicle to the recall list before someone gets injured or before there is property damage.

09/08/18 i put the vehicle in park, turned the ignition off, removed the key from the ignition and exited the vehicle. i got some items from my trunk and went about my business. about 45 minutes later, i returned to my vehicle only to notice the lights were on and it was running. i was unable to unlock the vehicle using the key fob and had to manually unlock the door. i put the key in the ignition to turn the vehicle off again and it would not turn off. i wiggled the gear shift and it finally turned off. this is the second time this has happened. please add my vehicle to the recall list as this is the exact issue that the other gmc terrain 2012 are having.

I turned the ignition off, exited the vehicle, walked 10-20 steps from the vehicle and the vehicle restarted itself. this is a known issue with this year, make and model. please add this particular vehicle to the recall list.

The camshaft position actuator solenoid on my vehicle failed as i was crossing an intersection, almost causing an accident. from my research, this is a very, very common occurence in these engines that gm has known about since 2010. it is the result of a defective part and oil consumption issues. gm issued a voluntary recall for the same exact part in the 2011 terrain models, yet did not issue any recalls for the 2012 models, even though it is the exact same part and the exact same motor. this is a serious safety issue that causes the engine to lose power at a critical time - when the driver attempts to accelerate. i have no doubt that this issue has caused accidents based on my experience when the failure occured.

Excessive engine oil consumption. timing chain failure. pistons, rings, exhaust manifold, muffler, door regulator, wiper motor, transmission failure. vehicle cannot be driven

2.4 ecotec engines excessive oil consumption affects thousands of gmc/chevy consumers vehicles 2011-2013. although in final stages of class action, gmc continues to deny the serious nature of the problem. oil indicator does not illuminate, engines blown, failed catalytic converters, rear main seals, timing chains and more. not only a huge financial impact for owners but also a serious safety issue. gmc suggests a piston ring failure but only offers resolution to very few owners. please consider a recall on these vehicles. you will find more information here: https://topclassactions.com/lawsuit-settlements/consumer-products/auto-news/857897-gm-class-action-says-chevrolet-equinox-suvs-burn-oil-alarming-rate/ and here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/174877126561662/ and so much more online. please consider a recall. the class action is not for the benefit of the consumers.

I have owned my 2012 gmc terrain for almost two years. in that time have had to have several repairs done. my check engine light comes on and every time it does the dealership finds a new issue. i was advised by the dealership that there was a recall for my engine. however, will not take care of the issue with out an oil consumption test and charging me each time they put in oil. the vehicle runs hard and makes a lot of noise. i have already put in several thousands in repairs since i purchased the vehicle and would just like the vehicle to run correctly.

Excessive oil consumption at less than 65,000 miles, warning lights do not activate to indicate a problem. next the timing chain broke and was repaired, now the catalytic converter needs replacement. all result of oil consumption and is a widely known issue affecting thousands of 2010-2013 gmc terrains in the us but gmc will not help or take recall action. a class action lawsuit is underway, but it won't be approved until oct 2019 (state of fl), two others on a stay (il and ca) until fl is finalized. i purchased my vehicle used with a salvage title. the oil problem is in no way connected with the salvage title (rear end damage, and certified by state as safe). gmc mailed me a special coverage letter dated may 2017 but they won't honor it because i did not purchase from a gmc dealer or have my routine maintenance at gmc service. in fact when i received the letter i followed the instructions and contacted a local gmc service but they called me back telling me they are cancelling the appointment because when they looked up my vin and saw it is a salvage title. i told them i have the letter from gm dated may 2017 but they told me i should not have received the letter, that i don't qualify. the letter reads in part: "gmc is providing owners with additional protection for the condition, if this condition occurs within 7 years and 6 months or 120000 miles the condition will be repaired at no charge." please see testimonials here from affected consumers: terrrain-equinox oil consumption recall: https://www.facebook.com/groups/174877126561662/ https://www.carcomplaints.com/news/2019/gm-oil-consumption-lawsuit.shtml https://www.classaction.org/blog/settlement-reached-in-class-action-over-chevy-equinox-gmc-terrain-oil-consumption-here-are-the-details these are family vehicles and they are unsafe. please help.

2012 gms terrain 4 cylinder flex fuel- camshaft code, cam sensors replaced, spitting and sputtering, stalled x3 and shut off, fuel consumption noted, loss of power. gmc dealership refused to perform diagnosis on my car due to my refusal to pay for ruling out the documented fuel leak recall/special coverage. my request was only to have fuel the issue looked at and ruled out, nothing further, to ensure this was not causing my problem. i reported my problems that are consistent with the noted fuel special coverage and turned away because i did not have $120 to pay if they found it was not the problem. upon reading my issue correlates with numerous terrain and equinox owners. i want in this action to get something done for people like myself.

Excessive oil consumption, ecotec 2.4 engine

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 gmc terrain. while driving approximately 25 mph, the vehicle stalled and did not restart. the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. the following day, the vehicle was towed to stark chevrolet/buick in merrill, wisconsin where it was diagnosed that the engine failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 75,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 gmc terrain. while driving 50 mph, the check engine indicator illuminated and the vehicle stalled. cavender buick gmc west in san antonio, texas was made aware of the failure and stated that the vin was not included in a recall. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and provided the contact with case number: 8-4147028398. the failure mileage was approximately 45,000.

After owning this car for over 4 years we are just now finding out that general motors has issued what they call special bulletins on the excessive oil consumption problem we have been having. we first started noticing the problem in february of 2018 when the car started vibrating, shaking, and stalling while driving. i took the car to firestone to have the oil checked and the car was shaking so bad that they refused to even look at it for fear of being held liable for damages. come to find out that my car only had about 1.5 quarts of oil in it and after the oil was changed it began riding smooth again. however we noticed after about 6 weeks it was low on oil again. basically we ended up having to get a oil change every 6-7 weeks or at least add a quart of oil to the car ever 3 weeks. now we've come to find out that special bulletins(bulletin #16118 or 14882) have been issued on this problem with my terrain. my problem is no letter or contact was ever sent to notify me of this issue. my car has been to the local gmc dealer on multiple occasions and i would like to know why i was never notified about this problem or these bulletins. the problem i have now is after reading the bulletin we've come to find out that my car may be out of the warranty phase. i currently have 132,000 miles on it and the tsp says 7 1/2 years or 120,000 miles. if we had been made aware of the tsp we would have surely taken it to the dealership to have it check. better yet, when my car was at the dealership for a fuel line problem or repair of the moon roof we would have expected to be notified of any tsp's then. i strongly feel that this excessive oil consumption issue with my car should be fixed, as it had less than 120,000 miles on it when the problem first started occurring over a year and 1/2 ago and we were never notified in a timely fashion.

As i was driving down the road at 55 mph hour my suv began to shake extremely and was throttling at very high rpm's and the suv thrash to sudden halt and continued to shake and idle very high and loud. i tried to hit the gas to get myself off the road as i was on a 2 lane highway with my 4 year old son in the car, and the engine revved and the rpm's spiked but i went not more than 15 mph, at the same time the following errors appeared on my screen: 1) service stabaili trak 2) engine power is reduced slowly i was able to safely get the car up to 35 mph and get us home safe. i did some research and seems that this is a very well known issue with gmc so i contacted gmc and was basically given the runaround. i took the car to a gmc dear today and was told it was the fuel pump that needed replaced.....

Pcv system froze...air cleaner has water in it// rear main seal pushed out due to excessive crankcase pressure. #14882 special coverage adjustment covers exact issue however my vin is not included. requesting my vin be added to #14882 special adjustment as it applies to my exact make/model/year and issue.
