We have classified the 129 complaints from 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 about EXTERIOR LIGHTING into the following categories.
The headlights on this truck are unsafe, they do not project enough light ahead for safe driving at night. one has to depend on the street lighting or stars. i have come close to hits others on the roads for the lack of projection of these lights. the truck becomes a hazard on the highway do to the slow speed one has to travel to stay within the headlights. please address this with gmc before someone is hurt or killed. *tr
Headlights are inadequate on low beam without the use of the lower driving/fog lamps. lower lamps needed to light sides of road. when switching to high beams, lamps are totally useless. beam is focused way too high and narrows. without lower fog lamps on with high beams, there is no illumination of the road sides or lower pavement from 5-30/50 feet out in front of vehicle. this is serious issue when driving on rural highways or county roads at night or on open interstates. unable to see any wildlife or pedestrians on side or in front of vehicle when driving at night. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 gmc sierra 1500. the contact stated that the low beam headlights were very dim. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the headlights needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was unknown. the approximate failure mileage was 20.
Headlights are terrible. in a dark rural area, they are so dim they are dangerous. you can easily outdrive your headlights. in the dark and rain, you should stay home. it's sad i can't drive my $50,000 truck at night. dealer's "fix" was worthless. so angry. i will never own another gm vehicle!
Live in west virginia. was traveling home from 2nd shift along good country road when i had to swerve to miss a deer. reason was be the headlights on my week old gmc sierra are awful. they do not light up the road correctly (side to side) or distance wise. the low beams shine out about 30 feet and when i use the high beams the light is not aimed properly. it shines everywhere but on the road. dealer said they've had lot of complaints but no info from gm on a fix. my last gm truck had great lights. should have bought a ram! this is dangerous and needs not to be covered up like the ignition switch thing. *tr
The headlights on this truck are terrible, both lack of side projection and front projection are unsafe especially when driving in rural areas or during wet road conditions. i have had the bcm update and new bulbs installed from gmc but this offered very little improvement. driving with the fog lamps on offer the only lateral vision to see turning any corner.
The vehicle's headlight have such poor illumination it renders the vehicle undrivable at night. gm says nothing wrong, i have replaced the headlight bulbs with 3 different bulbs both oem and aftermarket nothing improves the illumination with the stock light housings.
Vehicle headlights fail to illuminate properly at night. check with 2 different gmc dealers they say they are aware of the issue but no resolution is coming. vehicle is not driveable at night on dark roads.
The headlights on these trucks are horrible. very unsafe to use.
The headlights do not illuminate the road enough. very dim and cannot even tell where cut off line is. even with fog lights on, it is unsafe to drive at night. *tr
Worst headlight on a new vehicle. i own 4 autos and am scared to drive at highway speed on local pennsylvania roads. the high beam has no increase in visual effect. very disappointed i may have to add extra light or modify factory tested lighting to make this adequate for safe driving. *tr
Worst headlight for a new vehicle. i have owned various gm trucks from 1967 to 2014. never have i owned a truck with such worthless headlights like the projector beam headlights on my 2014 gmc sierra 1500 with the all terrain package. the projector headlight are very dim and do not light the road more than 30 feet ahead. at highway speeds (55-70) the projector headlights are only lighting a half second ahead of you. additionally there is no lighting to illuminate the sholder at all.. you must drive full time with the fog lamps on to have a small increase in lighting. when using the high beams there is very little effect on visibility. extremely disapointed in the 2014 gmc sierra. and will unlikely purchase another gm product in the future. at a msrp of over 50 grand i would expect a truck to have adequate headlight to light the road. without the aftermarket cost to install better lighting the 2014 gmc sierra is very unsafe to operate at night. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 gmc sierra 1500. while driving various speeds, the low beams and high beams were extremely dim when activated. the failure recurred continuously. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 30. updated 6/22/15*cn
Poor headlights. the headlights on my 2014 gmc sierra are terrible at best. unable to see anything at night
The headlights are to dim , it is hard to see ,they do not project very far .the worst headlights i have ever had
The factory headlights are almost useless at night especially if there is any moisture on the roads . they are absolutely horrible at dusk and dawn as well . *js
Headlights are dangerous! dealer performed update( new bulbs and increase voltage to bcm) but improvement was minimal. have even tried led conversion, with very litle improvement. i have had several veihcles with projector system, and had zero complaints. i have looked a projector lens on other vehicles, and they do not have impurities (tiny air bubbles) in the lens. i believe the problem lies in the sub-par lenses.this creates an extremely dangerous situation for night driving.
The poor headlights in this vehicle prevent it from being safely operated after dark.
The headlights on this truck are the worst performing lights i have ever used. they emit a very poor amount of light making it difficult to see at night and barely able to see at night if it is raining. i have almost been in several accidents at night because of the poor lighting. i have had the upgrade done by gm and that did not make these lights much better and definitely did not make it safer to drive at night. they need to replace the lights with the updated version they have installed in the 2016 models.
Very poor lighting at night with headlights on both low beam or high.... very dangerous in rural areas... i have tried new bulbs with no luck... truck seems to sit low on one side looking at the back even on flat surfaces...
From day one the headlights on our 2014 gmc sierra 1500 vehicle are useless. the do not light up at all and is a very bad safety hazard for all. we can drive down the road on high beam and no one will flash us at all. we have notified the dealer and gmc and seem to get no where. they said there has been a lot of complaints for bad visability with the new shutter headlights but gmc says they look pretty. well pretty does not help being able to see. i have read pages of complaints about how anyone that purchased a 2014 gmc sierra 1500 cannot see at night while driving and again this is a serious safety hazard. the 2014 gmc sierrs 3500 has the regular headlights, why cant the 1500 have these?? we paid $43,000 for this pickup and cant drive it at night for the fear of hitting animals, people walking etc. gmc says oh well you bought it your fault, but who takes a trial ride at night?? if we could we would trade vehicle in for a chevy, their 2014 has regular headlights. again i am not the only one that is having headlight problems please search for complaints on this matter and you well see how many people are complaining and gmc is not taking this serious at all!! if we crash at night due to our lights, which where we live in northern maine, we will definitely be putting some lawyers in on this matter and going after someone for not addressing this safety hazard. *tr
Head lights dont allow you to see the road.not bright enough, dont shine correctly.cant see the road or deer at night and are worse in the rain.
The projector style headlights this truck is equipped with are insufficient for safe night driving when not in a city driving condition. the low-beams are satisfactory for lower speeds (ie <45mph) but are extremely easy to out-drive at highway speeds. the beam pattern is also not wide enough to illuminate anything other than the area directly in front of the vehicle. the high beams are even worse. the headlights in this truck use one single filament bulb for each headlight. when the high beams are turned on, a mechanical shutter opens to allow more light through the projector lens. the lens is designed such that this additional light is aimed so high as to be useless. parked 20ft from a wall, the center of the high beam patter is already several ft above the bulb level on the wall. when driving on a straight and level road with no trees, it is actually impossible to even tell the high beams are on since there is no extra beam to illuminate the sides of the road and the center beam is pointed up into the trees. *js
The large 8" intellilink radio screen in this truck has separate brightness control from the rest of the dash lights, including the instrument panel. due to it's size and colored background, the lcd radio screen is much brighter than the rest of the interior lights. the fact that the system has no night scheme, meaning it doesn't shift to a mostly black background at night makes this problem even worse. while it is possible to lower the brightness using a dash-mounted dimmer switch, the dimmer must be lowered to minimum in order to get the radio screen to be a comfortable brightness level for night driving. at this point, the instrument cluster lights are so dim as to be extremely difficult to see and as a result require much more time and effort to read speed information. the only way to completely turn off the radio screen is to go through several menus into settings and manually turn off the screen. not only is this a dangerous distraction while driving but if any vehicle setting such as radio volume, or hvac controls are adjusted, the screen automatically turns back on and the process must be repeated. i have contacted gm several times about this issue due to its distracting nature when driving at night and have been told repeatedly that the system is "operating as designed." i feel this is a safety issue since the bright light in the cab ruins night vision while also distracting the driver's eyes from the road. my recommendation is for a software update for the intellilink/radio system to be designed to add a brightness setting in the system menu to allow driver's to set the radio screen brightness independently of the instrument cluster lights and to also program a "night mode" color scheme that would shift from the blue illuminated background used in the daytime to something that is mostly black. *js
The head lights are terrible. when driving in a area with street lighting they have very little affect .my 20 year old mazda mpv has better lights
The headlights on the new 2014 gmc sierra 1500 are incredibly dim. they do not illuminate the road sufficiently and are dangerous. rural roads are practically a no-go at night because i can't see anything in distance or on the sides of the road. making turns at night are incredibly dangerous. i feel the need to swap to a better light but there are no options that won't void my warranty by going aftermarket. this is a serious concern for me. headlights have been adjusted multiple times with no improvement. nothing that dealership can do since there are no alternate lights other than aftermarket. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 gmc sierra 1500. the contact stated that the headlights were dim and caused poor visibility of the road. the dealer adjusted the headlights higher; however, the visibility worsened. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 11,000.
This vehicle has the worse headlights of any vehicle i have owned (i have owned 341). the headlights cut off abruptly at 36 feet in front of the vehicle. you can outdrive the headlights at 5 mph. after 4 visits to the dealership, they have aimed the headlights up to cast the light out further, but the high beams are now 30 feet up in the trees. the light is very, very dim overall. i own a 2014 mossimo utv four wheeler and the lights are brighter and have more distance than my $50,000 truck, i also own a kia soul, a 2013 ford fusion, and a 2014 chrysler town and country. all of those headlights are much brighter and give great light dispersion on both sides of the road and are bright. my headlights are like a 3 way bulb 70/100/125 watt.my other cars are like the 125 and the gmc is less than the 70 watt setting...good comparison. gmc is using 1 hir single filament bulb with a mechanical flapper for low beam. very sorry set up. i live in tennessee where the roads are crooked and have no shoulders. if you drive off the road, you are in a deep ditch or dead. this is a definite safety issue. 1901 headlights on a 2014 truck. i do not any longer drive this vehicle at night. gm has done nothing. no fix, no bulletin. i have read hundreds of complaints about the 2014 gmc headlights on the internet. i guess gm will cover this up like the ignition thing. i had a 2002 corvette that the ignition would lock up the steering wheel on, while driving. gm said it was impossible. i had video. they bought it back. coverup artists! *tr
These trucks have the worst headlights that i have ever owned and something needs to be done before someone is hurt or killed.
The headlights on this $50k truck are just plain unacceptable! finally took in to the dealer as the brights were "raccoon hunting" but the dim setting is almost no light at all. living in a rural area, i have to decrease my speed to nearly a crawl in order to watch for obstacles in the roadway or for wildlife. i've owned 6 gmc vehicles (sierra or yukon) since 2000 and none of them had the poor and dangerous lighting that this 2014 sierra has. when the dealer adjusted, the dims are now pointing down to the road about 30' from the bumper and the high beams are both pointing at the middle of the road about 75-100' with no lateral lighting at all. it's so bad, i have to make wide turns to light up the driveways or streets i'm turning into to keep from running into ditches or miss the turn all together. on a 55mph straight road, you can out run you lights! the fogs help the lateral vision a tiny bit but they are not all that good either. gmc needs to address this or risk paying out on a big lawsuit over someone getting badly injured or worse. *tr
Headlights are terrible. very dim. brights are no better. installed aftermarket lighting (just under $400) just to be safe at night. . made complaint with gm. they did not admit to knowledge of the problem and offered nothing to make situation right. i am extremely disappointed and will not buy another gmc with projection headlights. *tr
