Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2011 Ford Mustang

Problems shifting car into gear. gears are notchy and almost impossible to shift into first when car is cold. transmission making whining noises in 1-4 gears. *tr

I own a 2011 mustang 5.0 coupe. manual transmission. when shifting at higher rev's it is really hard to shift into 2nd and 4th gear when turning or on a curve. i notice this every time i turn left or shift when traveling on a curve to the left. i have not contacted the ford dealership but will soon. *tr

2011 ford shelby mustang gt500 transmission problems. grinding and difficulty downshifting into 4th and 2nd. loud whining in 1st gear. *tr

Unable to shift car in reverse at first ( trying to back into parking space. ) then could not get the car into any gear at all for about 30 to 60 secs. *tr

2011 mustang gt transmission shifting issues. very hard shifting from first to second and same shifting problem back from second to first. this now takes my attention off the road as i?m now looking down at my shifter to see what?s wrong. i have taken my car back to my local dealer only to be told that nothing is wrong with my car. shifting is now become a job and driving the car more like work then fun, the car is no longer a pleasure drive and so sits in my garage. started with 600 miles on the car and as only gotten worst. *tr

Brand new mustang gt/cs 2011 hard shifting in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. hard shifting included grindings, loud noise and some times simply can not shift. problem is more evident when engine is started in the morning. occasionally while shifting i could feel that the transmission is pushing the shift in the opposite direction i am trying to shift. *tr

I own a 2011 mustang gt 5.0. my car is not a daily driver and is only driven on weekends. this car is 100% stock except for different mufflers. i have had the car since march, 2011 and only have 950 miles on it as of today. the manual transmission in this car is garbage and little scary. i'm 34 and have grown up driving manual transmissions, but this mt82 has a mind of its own. the past few days, i have had problems engaging into 1st gear and grinding into second. at one point i could not shift and feared the vehicle behind me was going to rear end me. from what i understand, ford has had these transmissions in the new mustangs for about a year and a half now. however, ford has done nothing to try to fix the problem. there is a tsb for a lighter transmission oil, but that is it. ford needs to fix this mt82 before i get rear ended and hurt!!! ford needs to acknowledge the problem and let new owners know they care about their safety. from what i have seen, ford is tight lipped and that tells me they don't care about mine or my family's safety. *tr

The manual transmission on my 2011 ford mustang has erratic shifting which has caused me to nearly be rear-ended twice now and hit by on-coming traffic as it fails to go in gear, even with the clutch fully engaged. there appears to be problems shifting from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd. the gears will not engage and the transmission remains in neutral. the latest incident for me was when i was trying to accelerate from a stoplight that turned green, i shifted from 1st to 2nd but couldn't get the transmission into 2nd or 3rd with the clutch fully depressed. because i was in neutral, i lost most acceleration and the suv behind me nearly rear-ended as i was stuck in neutral and not going anywhere. i was able to at least rev the engine enough to get it into 4th to get enough power to the wheels to avoid being hit. *tr

I was sitting at a stop light waiting for it to change and when it did i wasn't ready. so i tried shifting into first quickly and it would not go in, i backed out into neutral and tried again, once again it would not go in. meanwhile a truck was coming up behind me rather quickly. the third time i tried it was still very tough but it loosened up enough for me to force it into gear, and as i began to move forward i saw the lights on the truck dip hard towards the ground as it slammed on the brakes to avoid rear ending me. *tr

2011 mustang v6 manual transmission. the transmission refused to go into 2nd gear during a slight left turn. another car had to swerve to avoid running into the back of me. if he had it would have been his fault but that's not much consolation. *tr

1. this event has happened twice in the 3 weeks i've owned the vehicle. this occurred in a normal driving situations. no extenuating circumstances. 2. the transmission will not go into first gear. i can't get out of someone's way at a light. it also will not transition into second gear, even with a throttle blip. when this happens the vehicle begins to coast and i have to fight with it to get into gear. it's distracting and frankly nerve racking. there are times when transitioning from reverse to first gear, the transmission grinds. on coming to a stop, the transmission will vibrate violently. it almost shakes the shifter out of your hand. 3. i called ford. they gave me a claim number. ford did not offer any advice about this issue. i have to schedule an appointment with a service tech. however ford is not guaranteeing that i will not have to pay out of pocket for this inspection. it's almost like a threat. if nothing is found to be wrong with a brand new transmission, i am culpable for the cost. ford offers no rental, so this compounds the issue. *tr

Well, my car just nearly got me into an accident today on my way to work. uphill curve onto a state highway, run first out, go for second and.....nada. go to third, lug-lug-lug, because i missed the opportunity to get to 2nd. speed still descending. traffic at my rear is closing in on me, and fast. this is a 60mph onramp. go for first, walled out. second, grind. i wound up having to pull off to the side of a curve and turn the car off, then back on again before it would let me get into 1st gear. still can't get into second. i crawled all the way up the onramp in first, until i got to flat ground, then nearly redlined first before shifting to third to get back on the road again and headed to work. my car was just in for service on this shifting issue last week. they swapped the fluid and said they needed to order parts (i'm assuming clutch assembly, because mine feels like it is on its last legs, and probably the clutch pedal one too, because i noticed that the clutch pedal sticks on rev-matched downshifts...). i almost parked it on the side of the road so i could call ford roadside and have them tow it, but i had to be at work. these things never seem to happen when it's convenient enough to just send it in from exactly where it sits. the dealership i am dealing with has not called me back about the parts, even though they said the parts should be here in the middle of this week. *tr

2011 ford mustang 6 sp manual transmission. sporadic problems shifting into and from higher gear. car has a tendency to almost stall from stop. i have long experience with manual transmissions. vehicle delivered 09/10/2010-special order mustang premium v-6. *tr

I have a 2011 mustang gt. starting around 2k miles i began having notchy shifts. since then (around 5k miles) a slight grind has developed between 1-2, 2-3 shifts. i have also found the transmission occasionally hard to engage first gear from a stop after the car is warm. my car was repaired in an attempt to fix the notchy shifts. the entire clutch assembly was replaced. the transmission fluid was replaced per guidance to the dealership from a ford tech. after the repairs the shifting was slightly smoother but the notchiness and intermittent grinding remains. i am very concerned that the transmission will get worse or will fail. *tr

The mt-82 transmission in my mustang has become increasingly difficult to shift since purchase. now with only 800 miles on the car, i find myself encountering daily incidents where i am unable to shift from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd without noticeable grind and resistance. i feel this is a safety issue because the problem obviously occurs while accelerating and the traffic behind me is probably not prepared for my car to slow down so much while i fight the shifter. *tr

I own a 2011 ford mustang gt and have difficulty shifting gears ,(1-2-3)with the inability to get it into gear several times have come very close to being rear ended. this is a very dangerous problem. have been to the dealer and am told this is normal operation and that there is no repair. i guess it is cheaper for ford to pay out a law suit for a death than repair these cars, be it the transmission or clutch or both. this really needs to be looked into. thank you *tr

I was driving along the highway, went to downshift to make an exit cutting across busy traffic, and the car would not shift. it was stuck in gear. i jammed it out and then it would not go back in! i nearly caused a semi to crash trying not to hit me since i was stalled in the middle of the road. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford mustang gt. the contact stated while driving 25 mph the vehicle would not down shift. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who inspected the vehicle and stated there was no failure. the manufacturer also stated there was no failure and offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 455 and the current mileage was 17,000. updated 11/14/11 *bf the consumer stated ford engineers inspected the vehicle and founds nothing wrong. updated 11/18/11*jb

The car makes a grinding and knocking noise when i accelerate gently and coast at low speeds up to 15 mph in 1st gear. it doesn't make the knocking noise when i accelerate hard nor does it make this sound when im cruising above 15 mph and give it gas. i am concerned that the transmission may go out and cause an accident. *tr

I was traveling on a busy road and was merging on to a freeway on-ramp that also serves as an off-ramp. when i merged and tried to shift from 2nd to 3rd gear, i was unable to get it in to 3rd gear. this caused the car to slow down quickly and since i wasn't braking, the person behind me could only tell by how quickly he/she was getting close to me. no brakes were depressed so no brake lights were showing. after a few seconds i was able to put the car in 3rd gear and continue on. luckily the person behind me and behind him/her was able to react quickly enough and not run in to my rear end. this occurs on a very regular basis. at least 3-4 times per week will my car not be able to get into a gear. i took my car to the dealer and they said there is currently no fix from ford. the only fix is to change the fluid in the transmission which has been reported to not improve the problem. *tr

Vehicle will not engage 1st gear from a stop light intermittently, gears 2,3,5 on up or downshift are high effort with occasional grind in 3rd. in many instances the vehicle behind me in high traffic comes close to rear ending my vehicle. down and unshifting problem is worse in slow turns. *tr

Accelerating onto interstate on ramp tried to shift into second gear. second gear did not engage. the rpm's spiked due to the car being in neutral because of it would not engage gear. the clutch pedal then stayed on floor until rpm's came down. very scary! mustang only has 600 miles on it and it does not shift well, especially 1st to 2nd shift. *tr

I, like many others, are having horrendous transmission/clutch issues on my brand new ford mustang. i have been informed by other forum members of allfordmustangs.com to come here and fill this out to get out serious issue known. if greater details are wanted i can be contacted. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Transmission in my 2011 ford mustang gt 6-speed manual, (presently @ 4900 miles)has issues of trying to enter second gear on various occasions. as well as a terrible whining noise started around late 3000miles. *tr

Excessive vibration during deceleration - specifically when letting off the accelerator, but not pressing the brakes. the vibration is strong enough to vibrate the center console and the manual transmission shift lever. the concern is that this excessive vibration could damage parts or loosen components, eventually resulting in a complete transmission or driveline failure. this occurs every time the car is driven while decelerating. the manual transmission fluid has been replaced, which very briefly seemed to resolve the issue, but it the vibration returned in just a few days. *kb

Contact reports driveshaft failed. part replaced under warranty. replacement driveshaft failed almost immediately. driveshafts are ripping themselves in half where they are stamped from thin sheet metal. if the driveshaft fails while driving, not only will the car no longer have power to move but may go out of control and crash. *tr

Our 2011 mustang gt with 6-speed manual transmission has a terrible notchy shifter that i've complained about 2 times to my dealer. the first time they replaced the clutch, and the second time they replaced the transmission fluid according to a tsb from ford. i read the tsb online and it says it's for cars with difficult shifting in cold temperatures (which isn't my issue) but they insisted this would fix it. immediately, the shifting was worse and i'm having trouble getting the car into reverse, second and third. when you have to get out of the way quickly, you can't get the car in gear and this is really starting to scare me. the dealer claims there is no other fix available so i asked them to give me a new car (mine only has 1400 miles on it) and they said "no, they all do this" and implied i'm not shifting correctly, i've bee driving manual transmissions for 40 years. i know how to shift. this problem is all over the internet. why aren't they recalling this before somebody gets hurt? *tr

Bought this 2011 ford mustang on april 8 2011. everything was fine for about this first month. car did not want to start when clutch was pressed down had 800 miles at the time, classic ford 1st dealer said needed a clutch adjustment? its hydraulic there is no adjustment on them! they had the car for about 6 hours to tell me that. clutch still felt funny ,started hearing grinding, shifter would get stuck in r,1,2,3,4 gears then it went out stuck in 2nd gear! 2nd dealer jim hudson ford took it to had it for 3 weeks before i got it back car had 6,000 miles on it needed a brand new clutch system from what ford said. it was not a recall on the car they said it was a bad design! still is not right for ford to push it under the rug like its not a big deal. these cars cost too much for us to be having problems with them and most our children that ride with us. i would like to know more info about this please thanks. *tr

Vehicle's transmission becomes unable to upshift or downshift when needed. difficult shifting during critical periods decelerating to a stop & accelerating after coming to a complete stop. becomes a hazard on public roads by not being able to keep up with pace of traffic. shifter may pop out of gear or get stuck into a gear. frequently needs to be forced into gear.. 1st & reverse with excessive force (2 hands). problem is with the 2011+ ford mustang's with getrag mt82 6-speed manual transmission. shifting into & out of reverse is also an issue which can increase the amount of time the vehicle continues to roll back uncontrollably in parking lots with children. biggest issue is 1st gear, reverse, and inoperable 5th gear synchronizers & mechanically unsound input shaft. *tr

2011 ford mustang gt. my wife and i were almost killed last night in this car. i was merging onto the freeway quickly into an opening and shifted 1-2 and then was unable to shift into 3rd gear. i tried to shift back down into 2nd gear and it was impossible. by the time i was able to get into any gear (4th) we had slowed so much cars behind me came screeching to a halt and i thought we were going to get rear ended. this car has been returned to the dealer 3 times for this issue. the last time they changed to a new fluid but that only made matters worse. this is dangerous plain and simple and my wife now refuses to drive or ride in it. there are a lot of youtube videos and websites devoted to issue with the mt82 transmission so i know i'm not the only one. these cars have to be recalled before somebody gets injured or killed. *tr

Manual transmission started to become difficult to shift into gear at random times at around 6000 miles. problem seems to be getting worse, involving grinds, and at times difficulty even getting into certain gears. i can see where this could be a serious safety issue, ie: pulling into fast traffic, and not being able to properly engage gears. manufacturer offers no solution so far, advises "normal" characteristics for this car. *tr

I am intermittently unable to shift into 1st 2nd and now 3rd gear. several people have almost rear ended me when i could not get the car into 1st gear after stopping at a red light. this issue is potentially a serious safety issue if someone were to be in a situation where they needed to move their car quickly and could not get the car in gear to move. the car also has a vibration when running between 2500-3000 rpm. i am very concerned for my safety driving this car. i have not taken this car to the dealer due to their own ambition that this is normal and there is no fix. *tr

Rough and hard shifting in 2011 mustang gt manual transmission. experiencing rough shifting in 1st gear and hard shifting in 2nd gear with grind sometimes. almost got rear ended recently since i couldn't shift into 2nd gear in three attempts at a traffic signal. the reverse gear is also a problem. requires pushing down to engage into reverse but sometimes pops into 1st instead of reverse and moves in the other direction and gives me a good scare every now and then. these transmissions are defective and can/will result in accidents. *tr

New 2011 mustang gt 1400 miles mt82 transmission is very difficult to shift gears 2-3, and 3-4 shifts. this is very dangerous as on numerous occasions i could not shift the car into gear and had to bypass 3 & $ gear and shift to 5th gear to maintain my speed. i recall is required here. *tr

Manual transmission shifting problem, many times i have experienced in 2nd and 5th gear that it is very hard to shift with clutch all the way in. in second gear i am around 10 mph and at 5th gear i am around 50 mph - 60 mph. during cold start the shifting to second gear is even more impossible and it can cause an accident specially when crossing intersection because the vehicle does not go into 2nd gear right away. *tr

Transmission jumping out of gear during moving, impossible to down shift to aid in engine braking or dodging/avoiding obstacles. *tr

Tl* the contact owns 2011 ford mustang gt. the contact stated that while driving 100 mph, the vehicle failed to shift into 5th gear. the passenger side airbag sensor also periodically illuminated. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer and the manufacturer was not notified. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 4,000 and the current mileage was 6,456.

Hard to shift when cold, grinds going into 2nd from 1st, grinds going into 3rd from 2nd, gets better warmed up,but still does it when warm. *tr

1. normal driving in both cold and warm weather. 2. rough shifting manual transmission. occasionally unable to engage 1st or 2nd gear from a stop. often unable to engage 2nd gear while moving. has nearly caused me to be rearended at stop lights a number of times. 3. ford has attempted to resolve the problem by replacing the clutch assembly and the transmission. problem comes back about 2000 miles after service. *tr

I have a 2011 ford mustang shelby gt500 and i was waiting at a stop light finally i had a clear shot to go i started to go turning left went to shift it in 2nd gear and it would not go into 2nd it just grinded for a few seconds then went into gear seconds before a car was coming and slammed on its brakes barley hitting me. then anytime and everytime i merge into traffic getting on the highway shifting from 4th to 5th gear my 5th gear grinds or disappears and i sometimes get ran off the high one time i almost got rearended. my reverse and 5th gear were grinding bad around 1700 miles brought it to ford they replaced 5th reverse forks and syncros still didn't solve the problem still does it today at 2700 miles. please help me thanks. *tr

When going downhill in 2011 mustang in 3rd or 4th get strong vibration in drive train along with rough gear shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. rpm range is only between 2 and 3 rpm when going downhill. this has happen before but am noticing the issue is starting to present itself more and more for both situations. with only 1900 miles on the vehicle. *tr

The car began to have intermittent shifting problems about 3-4 months after i bought the car. when slowing down and then accelerating, the car would not shift into gear and then lurch and make a popping noise (first time it did this, i thought someone had bumped my car in traffic). i dismissed it the first few times it happened. then it began to happen on a more frequent basis, not as bad as the few prior times but more frequently. i took the car to the dealership back in july or august 2011 and was told they could not duplicate the problem. after that i took the car in 3 more times and was told the same thing. finally this week, i called ford motor company and now their customer relations department is handling my case. the car has been at the dealership since tuesday and i was told yesterday they think it is a bad shifting solenoid and have ordered the part. i'm not even confident as this point, if replacing the solenoid is going to fix the problems. i wanted to make a complaint as i know you are investigating ford mustangs for the shifting issues. i am concerned as there have been several times i thought i was going to have an accident because the car would not shift properly and accelerate. i believe that the only reason the issues on my car have finally been addressed is because i called ford directly. it appears according to the information that i have been able to locate on line, ford may have known about the shifting problems since mid last year but the consumer has been left in the dark about the issue . *kb

Just a few of the issues i had while my car . i was told there was no problem with my car after i almost got killed twice because it would not down shift into lower gears at highway speeds. trans will look up once shifter is in between gears and will not go into gears still speed and rpm slow down. most evident when trying to go from 6th to 4th. i was almost in an accident twice because i was not able to down shift to get out of the way of a oncoming traffic. had a cracked rim that was obviously a casting defect. had a ticking in the engine after long trips. . 5.0 sounded like a diesel. *tr

Mt-82 transmission has a constant whine sound through 2,3,4 gear and won't engage in 3rd after 5k rpms. 5th gear constantly grinds. currently in repair. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford mustang. the contact stated that while driving in a low gear, a ticking sound could be heard coming from the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who stated that the sound was normal. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and filed a report, but offered no further assistance. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 1,800.

Rough, irregular shifting, most noticeable shifting from 1st gear on this manual transmission. seems to lock you out of gears at any given time. also while down shifting, i.e. exiting off the highway onto an exit ramp, have experienced a similar problem. from 6th gear, the transmission locked me out of 4th gear and forced me into 2nd gear. this caused a massive and sudden decrease in speed causing the vehicle behind me to slam on their brakes in order to avoid rear-ending me. persistent grinding noise and feel while the car is being shifted, as if the gears are not meshing when shifted. noticeable in the feel of the stick and audible at times as well. this is noticeable in most gears in particular 2nd thru 5th. the transmission constantly makes a hard clunking noise when it is put into first gear from neutral. this clunk can be heard and felt in the car clearly. i've had this vehicle to the dealer several times, keep getting the run-around, i.e., "that is normal", "our tech's couldn't reproduce the problem" etc...standard dealer deflection. *tr

2011 mustang gt manual transmission.....vehicle shifts very rough and from time to time locks 2nd and 3rd gear out creating a safety hazard at intersections when required to stop. this leads to getting into the middle of the intersection and have to try to jam the car into or skip that gear entirely to get out of the intersection. *tr

I had an issue today that was dangerous and had potential to cause an accident. my car's shift lever became stuck and wouldn't go into gear and i had to force it back to the neutral position while coming to a stop light.. the manual transmission in my 2011 ford mustang gt has been whining and grinding gears since the clutch was replaced due to a design flaw (only to get the exact same clutch assembly), and will be going back to the dealer march 29th to hopefully get the trans replaced (w/ the exact same trans that has all these known issues). i imagine this would happen again between now and when the car is taken to the dealer, this is my only and first brand new car, i shouldn't be having these dangerous problems, let along taking my brand new car to a dealership to keep getting repaired over and over again because the failing parts are just being replaced w/ the same parts only to fail over and over again. ford needs to step up and replace this trans w/ an entirely different/dependable manual transmission. i have owned 7 mustangs, and this brand new one has had more transmission/clutch problems then any car i have ever had.. worse off its the most $$ i have ever spent on a car as well.. $30k. for parts that keep failing. *tr

2011 mustang gt, manual transmission grinds shifting into second gear. it is real bad when cold and gets better as it warms up. *tr
