Problems with 2006 Ford Freestyle VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

Our freestyle has problems with surging for over a year. the rpms will go up and the car will try to jump ahead when the brake is on. other times it will surge while driving and the dashboard may go completely blank. it has been worked on many times, but the problem always comes back. different sensors and resets of the computer have been done. *tr

I was waiting in line to pick my daughter up from school today. when she got in the car i took my foot off of the brake and my car lunged forward and almost hit the car in front of me. i had to push down on the brake to stop my car from crashing into the car in front of me. when i attempted to take my foot off of the brake for a second time and to drive around the other car, my car lunged again and almost stalled.

I own a 2006 ford freestyle and often experience unintended acceleration or lunging. i haven't gotten in an accident yet, but am very anxious about driving with this problem. it occurs more frequently as the weather gets warmer. as the weather warms this occurs 90% of the time i drive it. *tr

2006 ford freestyle lunging started about 2 months ago. it happens often, thought it was just when i ran the air conditioner but it is happening all the time now. it will happen when the car is going forward and in reverse and sometimes it will die on me. i've already heard of this problem being responsible for 1 injury and i'm afraid it could continue to happen to other freestyle owners including myself. i should not have to pay for this problem. ford needs to own up to the fact that this is their fault and recall all freestyles made within 2006-2007. as i am researching this problem with the freestyle i am becoming aware that ford has known about this issue for some time now and have not done anything about it. if this is how they are going to make vehicles and treat their customers then i can assure you that most of their costumers will choose to go elsewhere with their business, including myself! they need to recall this model and fix it!!!! i am at 65,000 mile's and this is unacceptable to me and every other owner out there.!!! please do something about this mess. *kb

This is the same as pe11018, but is for the 2006 model year. my freestyle lunges, especially in reverse at slow speeds. pressing firmly on the brake brings it to a stop like normal. *tr

2006 ford freestyle started trying to drive forward on its own. brakes were applied, but you could still feel it pulling and the vehicle started rocking back and forth for a few seconds. we have owned the vehicle for almost 3 months and this was the first time. it was a hot day and the ac was on as reported by other owners of this same vehicle. since seeing the report this morning i have decided not to run the ac for the time being while the investigation continues. there needs to be a recall because sudden lunging could be very dangerous. i thought maybe it was an isolated incident when my wife told me what had happened, but it appears it is common. *tr

Upon starting the car and putting it in either reverse or forward, the engine would race and either lunge forward or backward. while driving, the engine would sputter and stall. this was more prevalent when the air conditioning was turned on. on starting the car, i had to place my foot with a lot of pressure on the brake pedal to ensure that the car did not lunge. this was a very dangerous problem as i have two small children in the car and they could be hurt if the car stalled in heavy traffic and was struck. the dealer said that this was not under warranty and that they understood the problem but ford has not issued a recall on the part. it was rather expensive to replace this part. i am urging the government to issue a recall on this part before someone gets seriously hurt or killed. the part in question is the throttle body. *kb

Not sure on date when incident occurred, but the vehicle would start lunging even while brake pedal was engaged. problem worsened over a short period of time to where it would cut off multiple times. also problem would get worse while air condition was on. one day pulling into a parking spot one day the vehicle lunged forward causing me to hit a parking block. damage was done to the front bumper only. eventually it got to where we were unable to drive the vehicle. has been parked for several months. will crank up for a couple seconds and will cut off. *tr

The automobile surges when initialing engaging into either reverse or drive. extreme pressure needs to be applied to the break to prevent the car from surging 5 to 10 feet, either backwards or forwards depending on which gear is selected. took the car to danvers ford in danvers, massachusetts. there service manager stated he had not heard of any surging problems. no error codes were detected. he contacted ford motor company and the recommended the "throttle body" be replaced. for obvious safety reasons reasons, we complied and replaced the throttle body at an out-of-pocket expense to us of roughly $650.

Got in my car to go home one afternoon and it cranked but when i pressed the gas pedal it wouldn't move. had to call a tow truck and have it towed to a shop. my car spent 2 weeks in the shop and it was determined it was the throttle body. i was told by my mechanic that this is a common problem on the freestyle and is usually one of the first major repairs needed. *kb

We have a 2006 freestyle and are experiencing a lunging problem when sitting idle. it happens in reverse or drive. fortunately, we have been alert and applied the breaks before running in to something or someone. this is not a good situation and it is a matter of time before someone gets hurt. one other thing, we only have 65,000 miles on the vehicle. *kb

My car lunges forward or backward randomly. for example my car is parked in my garage. i will start it in the morning and put it in reverse and the car will surge backwards without me even touching the gas petal. at random moments i will take my foot off the brake at a traffic light and my car will lunge forward. it is dangerous. i am use to it and i keep my foot close to the brake so i do not hit another vehicle, but i am scared that it will get worse and that i will get into an accident. *tr

Vehicle lunges and engine revs up at low speeds when stopping and at stopped. this seemed to happen at low rpm and when the a/c was on and cycling. also notice this at times when stopped and the steering wheel was turned, and when backing up. *tr

When stopping or taking off car surges whether your backing up or at a stop light. they said it was the throttle body,check engine light on when stopped at red light can only inch forward.

While idling the car will lunge forward and (reverse in separate incidents) all by its self. this continously happens. i have even had my foot on the brake and it does this. i have not noticed any consistency with the incidents other than when the air conditioner is on it is worse. this is extremely dangerous. it happens no matter where i am, in the drive way or parking lot at preschool where there are pedestrians around and i have no control over my car. sometimes after the car lunges (and it happens forward and reverse) the car will stall and then when i turn it on the wrench/check engine light comes on and the car will drive but feels like it is bogging down. i have contacted ford about this and they claim they have never heard of it before. someone is going to get seriously hurt. *tr

On or about saturday, april 30, 2011 i was driving my 2006 ford freestyle. i had been driving at speeds of about 40 mph for about a half hour and was entering onto the highway. i was coming around the onramp curve and was not pressing on the gas. i felt the car accelerate which at first i attributed to a slight downhill pitch in the highway. i did hear a 'revving' sound typical of when i would be accelerating to enter the highway, but since i was not pressing on the gas i assumed that it was the sound of the car next to me. as the road began to rise in pitch, i prepared to step on the gas ' but when i went to step on the pedal, it was not within the normal reach of my foot. at that moment, i realized that the car was continuing to accelerate even uphill and that the revving sound was indeed coming from my own car, even though i was not pressing on the gas at all. i scooted forward on the seat a bit to try to reach the gas pedal and realized the gas pedal was somehow pulled completely down to the floor. i tried not to panic and was considering whether i should shift into neutral. but then i realized that my first course of action should be to try the brake. as soon as i did, the revving stopped and the accelerator returned to its normal position. i told my husband, who was in the back seat, what just happened and he suggested i check the floor mat. i pulled over into the breakdown lane. i could see that the floor mat was twisted (rather than going straight, it was turned to the right by about 20 degrees), so when i pulled it to straighten it i did get a tiny bit of resistance initially, as though maybe the floor mat had been caught in the pedal. however, the resistance was small . while it did seem possible that the mat could have been holding the pedal in place if i had been pressing on the pedal, i could not understand how it could "pull" the pedal down to the floor out of my reach. my mechanic could ...

I have an 06 freestyle that surges forward or backward without pressing the accelerator. this has happened numerous times especially when running the a/c. i have to make sure and stay away from other cars at a red light for instance or the car would lunge in the them. i was told it was the throttle body. haven't been able to replace. *tr

Vehicle lunges - noticed lunging in april 2011. when vehicle is ignited and put in park or foot is applied to brake, after driving, vehicle lunges forward - rpm register can rev up to at least "3" or above and then rev down to normal idle. lunging is worse and more powerful if ac is on. vehicle has also lunged in reverse when vehicle is ignited and put in reverse while foot is applied to brake. this failure described above, happens each time the car is driven. we have begun turning off the ac when approaching stops and during stops. this tactic causes the lunging to not be as powerful - put is does not correct the problem. no parts have been replaced or repaired. have not taken the vehicle to a repair-place as personal budget restricts this during some summer months. *tr

2006 ford freestyle with approx. 66,500 miles on it, has problems with throttle body as diagnosed by ford coastal in mobile, al. before diagnosis, my freestyle would suddenly lounge or accelerate, uncommanded, while backing up (reverse), out of parking area. engine light and maintenance "wrench light" soon follow after these series of events. ford coastal suggests replacing throttle body. this part is not covered by my powertrain warranty. the cost is $920 to be shouldered by the car owner. *tr

We are starting to experience problems with the car "surging" while starting out from a dead stop. the problem happens both in forward or reverse and the car will lurch 3-4 feet without warning.

2006 ford freestyle with approximately 80,000 miles began violently lurching forward from a parked position without the driver's foot being on the gas pedal (was actually on brake which prevented the car from going more than a couple of feet forward). this was a sudden and powerful lurch, that even the brake could not totally stop. having air conditioning on exacerbated the problem. i researched the issue online and found many forums, comments and even a facebook page with freestyle owners experiencing identical problems, all stemming from a throttle body problem. we cleaned accumulation out from flap leading into throttle body and the problem was resolved for a few weeks. without warning, the vehicle now will not move as there is no response with foot on accelerator. the idle remains below 1,000 rpms and the car is sluggish to the point of not moving. found out that replacing the throttle body at a cost of several hundred dollars is the only solution, but even that is not a permanent fix, according to many reports online. this is because the part is only manufactured by ford and the item will continue to fail. *tr

Vehicle would accelerate, without depression of gas pedal. lunge forward at stop lights while brake pedal was depressed. while driving, at approx. 50mph, wrench light came on and vehicle stalled. pulled to side of road, started the car again and it worked fine...for awhile. called dealership, and they said it could be computer system, but not sure. will be having dealership look at vehicle to determine cause. this has been going on for over a month...just a slight increase in the beginning, but now is uncontrollable.

Foot was on the brake while idling -- car lunged forward and i had to press the brake even harder to make it stop moving. this has occurred on numerous occasions in the past few months, especially while moving slowly in the pickup line at my child's school. it is a very dangerous situation when children are walking in between cars and my foot is on the brake expecting the car to stay still, and all of a sudden it will lunge forward unexpectedly. we have owned our vehicle since we purchased it new in november, 2005. this is not something that is unique to our car -- it is happening to hundreds of people. please ford, issue a recall immediately so this dangerous problem can be corrected. *tr

This car started surging little by little getting progressively worse as the months went on. hotter weather seemed to make it worse, stalling in drive thru's and lurching more. a few times cutting out all together, having to wait in parking lots to come back on. then it began making a high pitched whining sound like the transmission was going to blow up if it got to "over worked" it seemed. then wow "shock of all shocks" this lemon of a car simply died while finally sputtering it's last gasps sounding like a diesel engine mack truck and had a " catastrophic engine failure" as two different mechanics of ours diagnosed. now we are faced with replacing the engine, used at a steal for about $3000.00 to $5000.00+ or taking a huge loss since we owe on it still. and gee what do we have to look forward to if we do replace the engine? a safe non-lurching ride? no. a future free from more costly repairs? no. new throttle body replacement and new transmission replacements? i can't wait!!! what a joke. i hate this car. please recall something, anything to take this death trap off my hands!!! and yes i have a small child that has to ride in this bundle of safety too. *tr
