Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2014 Ford Focus

I purchased this focus in september of 2013. little did i realize that this was probably one of the worst mistakes i made in my life thus far. i didn't even have the car 3 months before the transmission issue started happening. i don't drive erratic or aggressive i have taken the car to the dealership 12 times for the same issue since i have bought it, to the point that i have made friends with some of the guys there. the clutch has been replaced 4 times and the module has been reprogrammed and everything that ford claims will "fix" the issue. it has not been fixed, the most recent time i took the car to fix it i couldn't accelerate onto the highway because the gears wouldn't grab after second, then the car stalled and the engine shut off, so i had to nurse the car to the side of the road and restart it and i finally made it to the dealership. i called ford, and the bad thing is, is that they know that this problem exists they just don't want to do anything because they know that they will lose money. i finally spoke to a rep at ford that directed me towards the bbb because she found out that i was in the military, saying that the military members shouldn't have to deal with things like this because we do so much for the country. i have contacted the bbb and they finally said that they will have a resolution within 14 days from yesterday. and what is really alarming is that the only reason i found out about the bbb option is because of my military service. it is ridiculous because i know this issue is nationwide and ford wants nothing to do with it. it is sad to say like with the issue that toyota had with their cars is that someone has to die and sue ford before this issue will get resolved, unless you want to take direct action against ford.

On accelleration the vehicle shutters and rumbles and doesn't "go". i don't have the gas mileage for this vehicle that was advertised as this rumbling and shuttering stalls the movement and created a sort of push back and causes the rpm's to skip and jump. it happens so much at times i can't seem to move the car and i worry that i will be stalled during an intersection or attempt to get out of traffic flow. my car has 42,000 miles at this point. it happens every time i drive and every time the car shifts from 1st to 2nd gears. i have a "power transmission".

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. the contact stated that while driving at 35 mph, the vehicle jerked violently without warning. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 62,000.

Any time i am stopped and start going my car shutters and jerks before it finally catches gear. when i hit the gas it takes about 5-10 seconds before my car will finally start going. ford says this is normal with this type of clutch and keeps blowing me off

12,771 miles, starter replaced. 14,207 miles, fuel pump replaced. 18,249 miles fuel pump replaced and transmission control module reprogram for failure. 19,999 miles replace clutch and starter motor assembly. about 24,000 miles, car no start, battery replaced "bad battery". 29,975 miles car no start, jumped to start. 31,500 miles no start, battery replaced "bad battery". approx 32,750 miles, replace clutch and whatever else they may find. this car stutters in first gear (automatic transmission) when it was purchased it was fine and then a month later it started to shake and stutter on acceleration from a stop, whether in traffic or in the driveway. ford told us that it was a "smart transmission" and that it had to get used to two people driving the car although i am the primary driver. new "clutch pac" only temporarily solves the problem and then it starts all over again after a month or so. we have also had a no starting issue. we received a letter from ford about it, but they cant seem to help and wont replace tcm because they say the dealers can't show the part is malfunctioning. *tr

Transmission: the vehicle has been stuttering and then unexpectedly jumping forward when pressing the accelerator since about 1,500 miles. it's been getting continuously worse since. the first incident that truly endangered my safety was when i was pulling out from a 3-way stop, it almost stalled in front of incoming traffic, then suddenly propelled forward into a gas station curb & blew out my tire. the second incident, which is why i'm filing this report, was with my 2 daughters in the car, leaving a stop light at a highway intersection. it was raining, and i was trying to get up to the 55mph speed limit but the car kept chugging and stuttering. other vehicles were going around me as my speed slowly climbed, & at almost 50 mph the car suddenly accelerated and, despite tapping my brakes, continued to do so until it hit 65 mph. i was surrounded by other vehicles, and pressed the brake harder to avoid hitting the line of cars in front of me, to the left of me, or having to swerve into the ditch on my right at this high rate of speed, because tapping the brakes cautiously was having effect on the cars acceleration. when it stopped quickly accelerating, it continued to stutter, but seemed to level off at my chosen speed. since then, its continued to stutter and chug and jump forward almost every time i accelerate, whether from a complete stop or to go faster than my current speed. it's terrifying.

2014 ford focus. consumer writes in regards to vehicle transmission issues. *smd the consumer stated the vehicle had no power, it jerked and slipped upon take off. when driving up a hill, the vehicle went very slow. *jb

In the city after stopping at light and starting to drive car shudders, vibrates and tires feel like they are not rotating. which the car behind me to step on his brakes to avoid hitting me. once i get pass the "shudder, vibrate and jerking the car drives o.k. i have been told it is the transmission. i also had the car jerk forward with increase speed without me increasing my speed.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while driving various speeds, the transmission slipped and caused the vehicle to hesitate before accelerating. the dealer diagnosed that the transmission module and clutch were faulty and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 50,000.

Our ford focus has been chugging and slipping on start from a stop. ford has replaced the clutch and now 5 months later the clutch needs t be replaced again. ford isn't honoring the extended power train . this is a none defect and a real safety issue

I purchased a certified 2014 ford focus in august 2015 with 48k miles. drove it like two weeks without any issue, afterwards this terrible jerking, grinding and shudder noise started when accelerating from a stop sign or try to slow down and accelerate near speed bumpers or when accelerating while getting a turn. i took it to the dealer. they did a software update and said it needs to drive 1000 miles or so to automatically reprogram the transmission's computer by understanding my driving patterns. i felt some improvement compared to how it used to jerk while changing gears in low gears. but still shudder (or grinding) noise can be hear once in a while when accelerating from a stop or driving low speeds at speed bumps or while getting a 90 deg turn. most recently i felt a massive jerking and grinding noise again during a cold day when temp below 50f for the first time in the fall this year. this time it is pretty bad and i don't feel safe driving specially when it is snowing...!! ford need to fix these cars asap ..!! *tr

The transmission hesitates when starting up, exhibits a clunking noise. loss of power.

This is the second ford focus i have purchased and have had problems with manual transmission. i feel the dealer should of told me that the problem was not taken care of before selling me another vehicle that was still having problems. when starting out at a stop sign the car shimmies, and sputters before getting any power.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while turning at a traffic light, the contact's vehicle stalled and caused a front end collision with another vehicle. the air bags did not deploy. the contact sustained minor injuries, which did not require medical attention. a police report was filed. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the clutch and the tie rod needed to be replaced. prior to the crash, the clutch was replaced five times. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 13,000.

Following my low tire pressure indicator coming on, i noticed the power steering issue as i was pulling into a parking spot, and my steering wheel made a squeaking or whining sound. later, while driving on a city street, as i began to make a turn, my steering wheel started hesitating, and making a gear stripping noise; the steering column locked up and when i tried to turn the wheel it made a loud squeaking sound. also, my transmission shutters whenever i accelerate and slow down. the transmission issue was initially repaired via a software update before the warranty expired, but it has since started to malfunction again.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while driving 5 mph, the vehicle jerked violently without warning. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown.

The vehicle shifts between gears bad, sometimes late and sometimes not at all. also the vehicle does not shift past third gear. this is not a one time issue, the car continues to operate this way.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. when the accelerator pedal was depressed at various speeds, the vehicle shuttered and shook violently without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the transmission control module was replaced, but the failure recurred. the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 15,100.

I've have had to have three updates done for the transmission. about a month ago, i almost got killed pulling onto a country highway, due to inability to pick up power and they had to replace the clutch. today, the car had to be towed to the dealership due to lack of power, hesitating, and odd noise while driving. this car isn't 2 years old, and it's been constant problems.

2014 ford focus. consumer writes in regards to airbag safety recall and transmission problems. *ld updated 05/1/2017*js

Power loss to drive train and vehicle displays "stop safely now" message. this had happened repeatedly while vehicle was in motion on public roads.

Clutch in automatic transmission is stalling, car shutters at 24,000 miles. car doesn't want to go up hills, and acts mine it's stalling out when you pull out. this is my daughters car and i do not feel she is safe.

The transmission/engine hesitates/stalls while driving. rough accelaration.the first time this happened i was driving on the freeway 65mph and notice the vehicle was driving weird when trying to accelerate, when i slowed down the car would shake when trying to gain speed again. i immediately got off of the freeway pulled into a parking lot to look the car over. turned off the car to call someone, tried turning the car back on within 5 minutes and the car had completely locked down, had to call a tow truck to tow to dealer car had 21,000 miles on it. dealer stated the issue would be fixed some type of update needed done to the transmission. the update did not fix the problem but the dealer states everything is working properly. the car still hesitates on acceleration. i bought the car for my teen driver but i am afraid to let him drive it because i don't know how safe the car is. there is a serious issue with how this car operates on acceleration. *tr

My transmission has been progressively getting worse on my 2014 ford focus. it shudders, jerks, and hesitates when i start accelerating. i took it to the dealer for service and they have to change the clutches which takes them 8 days! the car has only 27,500 miles on it.

While driving on city streets the transmission slips and jerks and sounds like it's going to fall out of the vehicle. this is a known issue by ford with this vehicle and is unsafe to drive, especially merging into traffic. ford needs to buy all these vehicles back! this continues to happen on a daily basis. it's been in for repair twice and a recall once. still not fixed. i would sell this car if i could but the value has dropped significantly due to this known issue.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while driving 30 mph, the engine hesitated and attempted to stall. the transmission warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle would not shift into reverse. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v813000 (electrical system). the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while driving various speeds, the vehicles shifted into another gear on multiple occasions without warning. it was diagnosed that the transmission failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 30,000.

On accelerating car will jerk /stutter as in not go..this happens also after slowing to go through a dip then accelerating to go again ,happens after slowing to make a turn .also.happens when accelerating to go up inclines sometimes to as if it can't decide what gear it wants to be in..my car has an automatic transmission ..sometimes scared me cause will do it when i'm pulling into on coming traffic ..and car won't go.i have contacted service dept at ford and they told me this year vehicle was known for this ..i again have scheduled an appt for it to be checked ..this has been going on since i first acquired my car in aug 31 2016 ...

Transmission hesitation from a stop, typically in gear (drive or sportmode), sometimes severe, causing jerking. been happening literally since i've owned the vehicle, but seems to be now more pronounced, especially after longer drives. on the highway with stop & go traffic, and this problem is very unsettling and dangerous.

My 2014 ford fous has a shuddering and shifting issues on acceleration. sometimes my car will not go into gear. ford keeps telling me that is normal and to bring the car in if the check engine light comes on. my fear is that this will happen in a intersection causing a accident. ford is just dragging thier feet on this issue until the warranty expires and consumers like me are left with the bill. ford knows that there are problems and refuses to fix it. does it take the motoring publc to lose lives before anything is done?

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while driving various speeds, the vehicle stuttered. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission failed. it was diagnosed that the transmission module and clutch needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that, despite the warranty, the contact would be responsible for the repair cost. the approximate failure mileage was 52,000.

The transmission jerks seriously when start from stop to first gear and first to second gear.

We bought this car to have a safe, reliable vehicle. i live in a mountain community with plenty of wildlife and very few other drivers on the road. my car broke down on the mountain highway when leaving for work at 5:15am. i got barely 2 miles from home and i lost power and the check engine light came on. the car would not accelerate more than 10 miles per hour and jerked, hesitated, made grinding noise. it has hesitated from take off since we've had it. we received a recall notice and took it in immediately. that did nothing to take care of the problem. now it stopped running completely and the check engine light came on. it was towed to the shop and we have been told that the part (tcm module) is on back order and we could be without our car for 1 to 8 weeks. they could care less that this is our main form of transportation and i will have to get a rental in order to get to work in order to make car payments for a car i can't drive. i escalated my concerns all the way up to corporate customer relations at ford. so going into the weekend i had no help at all from anyone at ford and was forced to obtain a rental at my cost. so far i'm looking at $300 and praying that my car is back before i have to return the rental. this is a bunch of [xxx] from ford. it's all over the internet the issues with these cars. for them to not provide assistance with rentals is the worst possible service ever. i bet they sure will expect my payment on time won't they? i've filed claims with a lemon law attorney and a class action lawsuit attorney. as well on carcomplaints.com, center for auto safety and nhtsa. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).*tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. when the accelerator pedal was depressed, the vehicle shuddered and shook violently. when shifting between first and second gears, there was an abnormal vibration in the vehicle. on several occasions, when the accelerator pedal was depressed, the vehicle over and under accelerated and then hesitated. the dealer diagnosed that the manual clutch, power train control module, and transmission control module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the approximate failure mileage was 32,000.

Repeated issues with transmission, shuttering when driving. also have had the care hesitate when accelerating from a stopped location almost causing an accident two different times. took car into dealer to get fixed and they stated they were unable to find issue. contacted ford motor company corporate office requesting a buyback due to the unsafe conditions, they did an "good faith review" and informed me that they would not buy back my car. the would not explain the reasoning or issue and paperwork showing the review, "ford does not have to release the findings since it was a good faith review".

We are experiencing exactly the same issue as many other people (41) reported on this website and more people on other websites on internet. nhtsa conducted official investigation on this issue (nhtsa action number: pe13031). we have to unfortunately report that ford has not addressed this issue till this date (9-3-2016). our car was multiple times in different ford dealerships but none of them were able to resolve the issue. the replaced battery, high voltage harness, reprogrammed pcm and tpm modules several times but the serious safety issue is still present. we have experienced this issue more than 10 times since 2014 (we stopped counting), even 5 times in one day. issue: the vehicle, while in motion, suddenly loses power and driver receives a red triangle indicator and the message "stop safely now" in the instrument cluster. driver unfortunately cannot stop safely because the vehicle losses all engine power and is decelerating very fast so the driver doesn't have time to pull over while in traffic or driving on a freeway. we would like nhtsa to take action again as the issue was not addressed in 2013 as stated under nhtsa action number: pe13031. this is safety issue not only for the driver and vehicle occupants but also for other people in surrounding vehicles.

Problems hard shifting from 1st to 2nd and once in 3rd shifting problem goes away. same as technical bulletin 14m01 but not all 2014s are covered.

Upon acceleration from a stop, the rpm's rev up and the car does not proceed forward. when it does proceed forward, it is at a slow pace, with a jerking motion. there is also a vibration from the engine area at times when the car is stopped.

From the date of purchase in 2014 this car hesitates upon acceleration shutters and shakes. there have been numerous times when i have felt unsafe and at risk for bodily harm. i have taken it to my dealer numerous times and have been told repeatedly "this is the worst transmission ford has ever made." but they explain that ford will do nothing about it. "i wish they would, everyone complains about this car." on numerous occasions while traveling between a stopped position and five, 10, or 15 miles an hour this car hesitates shakes and shimmying. i had it in a little over a month ago with the same issue. they did nothing and told me "ford says if it falls within a certain parameter there is nothing we can do. our hands are tied." this morning i was heading to a family funeral, pulled out of my driveway tried to accelerate and my car choked and died. i have been unable to get it restarted and had to have it towed to a different dealership hoping to get better customer service. i honestly believe there should be a class action lawsuit against the ford motor company for this inferior product. also, my radio has never worked correctly. if i turn the rear defrost on there is horrible static over the radio. the dealer just keeps on telling me "you have bad reception. "

Transmission hesitates and shudders on acceleration, have had it repaired twice and now ford says that its within the limits and does not need repair drive it some more until it gets worse.

I contacted ford local and corporate. ford corporate told me that recalls were vin specific. i told them that was concerning. i am still having problems with my puttering car. i took the car in for a recall previously and the problem was not fix. the general manager called me in response to my not being satisfied. he left a message. i did not return his call. recently, i got another recall concerning door latch. i set up an appointment for that recall. the previously recall with the switch was not fixed properly. now my car defrost system is not working. sometimes my seatbelt won't buckle. why want ford take responsibility concerning their products. i am an avid ford buyer. please document my concerns concerning by engine stalling, defroster and seatbelt. i noticed that there were 8 recalls for the 2014 ford focus. i relayed this to ford. they told me that recall were vin specific. i have contacted you before concerning a complaint. i am schedule to visit local ford service department for the door latch recall tomorrow. thank you for your response and help. i really don't remember the dates of all these problems. Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. the contact stated that the vehicle hesitated and made an abnormal noise when it came to a complete stop. the failure progressed without warning. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was not available.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while driving 45 mph, the vehicle failed to shift properly without warning. the failure occurred on two occasions. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 12,000.

The vehicle jerks and jumps to gears, feeling like skipping gears,. i have had it to the dealer a number of times, they replaced clutch, still not better, ford says that is all they can do. the dealer says a known ford engineering issue and that they wish they'd get recalled as hundreds at just thsi dealer complaints.

Every year (10,000 miles) i take my car back to ford for a new clutch. i have had two new clutches in two years. the dealer said that ford will not admit their is a problem. they told me that i will need a new clutch every year. they said ford only patches the problem and will not spend the resources to repair properly. the transmission is jerky at most speeds under 50 mph. it is jerky on small hills. the sift is inconsistent from day to day. please help the driving is not safe.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. after the vehicle was repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 13v523000 (power train), the vehicle continued to exhibit transmission failures and the check transmission warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle became inoperable and was towed back to the dealer for diagnostic testing; however, the details of the diagnosis could not be provided. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 13,488.

Faulty clutch. i have just had the clutch replaced for the second time on the listed vehicle. while picking up the car from the dealer this morning, another focus came in with the same problem. a coworker has a leased focus, and he has the same issues. i know two other owners of the focus, and both have had clutch replacements and continue to have problems. the vehicle, when accelerating, does not shift evenly or smoothly. often times, it drives as if it is dragging or pulling something, feeling significantly underpowered. when attempting to speed up in situations such as merging into freeway traffic or passing a slower vehicle, it simply will not downshift, or it will down shift too far. either way, it does not accelerate and poses a safety issue. last week, before turning the car back into bob maxey (not purchased there, but their service department rocks!), the car would not accelerate while attempting to enter eastbound 1-94 from 12 mile in roseville, mi. i had to take the shoulder because the semi behind did not have room to move over and avoid my focus that simply would not accelerate fast enough to safely merge into freeway traffic. this is a safety issue and i do not have confidence in this car to perform as it should.
