My 2017 ford f-350drw tailgate keeps opening when driving or stationary. it has opened at least 10 times in the past year and at least 15 times since purchasing. trying to convince ford dealerships that the tailgate was up, and i did not forget to secure or touched one of the buttons to release the lock. on november 21, 2019, while towing on i-44 in oklahoma, our 5th wheel rv, the tailgate opened and damaged the tailgate along with the two doors of the rv. i always check my truck and rv after each service stop. i checked at the previous stop prior to lawton, oklahoma and the tailgate was up. i stopped at the last service station on i-44 prior to entering texas and saw the tailgate down and the damage. until i get my truck repaired, i have had to install black bungie cords to keep the tailgate from falling.
The tailgate at times comes unlatched. i do have a canopy which keeps the tailgate from dropping down all the way. truck only has 10700 miles on it and is still on warranty. i have taken it to the dealer twice, they cannot duplicate the problem, nor find anything wrong. i have called ford customer service 3 times, and have done what they told me to do, but they do not follow through with what they tell me they are going to do. vechicle is in motion, and has happened when pulling my cargo trailer. date below was the last time this happened. i do not drive this vechicle much.
For no reason the tailgate will open on it's own. either driving or parked. tailgate has come down a number of times. at highway speeds and in a parking lot.
Well driving tailgate opens on its own causing damage to tailgate trailer .was in for repairs but is still opening not safe don't want law suit for stuff that falls out. lost ratchet straps & 2 power drills batteries & charger no light or buzzer letting driver know that tailgate has opened there is one for hood think i would notice my hood. scared to drive also too costly & dangerous to drivers behind me.
Tl* the contact owns a 2017 ford f-350. the contact stated that the key would remain stuck in the ignition switch and was unable to release when the vehicle was turned off. ford motor company dealer was contacted (1 american rd, dearborn, mi 48126 (313) 322-3000) and the contact was advised to bring the vehicle to the local ford dealer for diagnosis. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the contact was advised the vehicle had ignition failure due to an unknown cause. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. failure mileage was 10,422.
Tl* the contact owns a 2017 ford f-350. while driving 65 mph, the electric tailgate slowly opened on its own without warning. as a result, objects in the cargo bed spilled onto the highway. the same failure occurred multiple times. the vehicle was taken to ken garff american fork ford (597 e 1000 s, american fork, utah 84003) several times and they replaced the wire harness and the latches. the vehicle was currently at the dealer. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and provided a case number. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 5,000. *tt
The 2017 ford superduty trucks have a remote tailgate release in the lariat and king ranch models. the tailgate of my truck and others have dropped without action from the user. this makes these vehicles unsafe when carrying cargo that is only secured by the tailgate or when towing 5th wheel trailers. mine has dropped some 16 times since november. apparently ford dealers are universally blaming the operators for accidentally pushing the tailgate button twice on the fob. however, i had an accident on may 6th, when i could not have pushed the button on the fob. the tailgate dropped, after i drove over 65 miles on mountain roads - just as i was entering an interstate on-ramp. my trucks tailgate and my 5th wheel camp trailer were both damaged. fortunately i was not in traffic. the damage to the 5th wheel was just under the propane tanks and near the mail power bus. i am changing the truck wiring to disconnect power to the tailgate, but this is really not a satisfactory fix. on line i found at least 3 other instances of this problem. whether the operators and unknowingly activating the tailgate release or the fobs are faulty or the electrical systems are faulty or whatever the cause, the result is a hazard that can cause loss of vehicle/ trailer control or the dropping of cargo on the highways. this is a hazard that needs fixing by ford. *tt
