We have classified the 76 complaints from 2016 Ford F-150 about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
Radio goes blank screen may go 30 miles before comes back .when comes back clock is still right time ,programmed station still there had it to ford dealership they says shows low voltage the truck has 9.000 miles just turn 3 years old 1/31/20 still suppose to under warranty he asked me if i had extended told him no had 3 more days after today been in dealer 2 times they say i need to drive more i know where they get low voltage sets in garage month or more and battery goes down done several times talked service department they told me to 1 or 2 amp charger on plugged in when goes to set for while i spent 60 years working on vehicle is not voltage i believe it a bad ground or bad connection also lights on heater controls goes dim some times then they come what upsets me they charged me $45.plus for checking car when it should not be under warranty
I was completing a 3 hour drive of approximately 120 miles (i had less than 5 miles to go till i arrived at my destination) when my sensors started lighting up my message board and dash system. i was in the left turn lane to enter the on-ramp to us65 south when this happened so i pulled off to the shoulder to investigate. i had just put my truck in park when a car pulled up and said that my engine was on fire. when i got out to look, the fire was rolling out from under the drivers side wheel well. as well, there was either a fluid or melted plastic dripping down to the asphalt that was also on fire. the fire appeared to put itself out, for the most part, prior to the fire company arriving within the next 10 minutes. i had, what i believed to be at the time, recall work done by mike raisor ford in lafayette, in, less than 1 year ago. in that recall work, i thought the block heater was disconnected so as to prevent an engine fire such as this. now, i am having doubts as to whether this was completely disconnected. nhtsa campaign number is 18v894000 and fords recall number is 18s45.
Electric tailgate release opens on its own, without any input from operator. can be parked, or in motion, driving forward or reverse. happens randomly.
While exiting the interstate, making a hard swooping left hand turn, make truck shutdown completely. at approximately 40mph and turning, i suddenly had to fight the lack of power steering. as soon as i felt it stop it powered back up. this issue continued intermittently until i was able to safely come to a stop.
I experienced an electrical failure that was intermittent at first but became worst over time. with this failure i would lose steering and vehicle advance track as well as abs brake function. when electrical power was lost the electrical power steering would stop functioning causing complete lose of steering. this caused me to cross into oncoming traffic, luckily there was no one in the oncoming lane. the dealer found a wire going to the alternator that had worn through causing an over voltage condition. this caused many of the systems, including steering, to shut down. in my research this is not the only occurrence of this issue. my vehicle has 42,000 miles on it. i would guess this will become a much more common issue with time.
Driving down the road we smelled smoke and my back sliding window shattered and blew out. took it to the dealership and they wouldn't give a complete estimate. called ford corp and of course they are dragging their feet. the rear defrost wasn't even activated at the time that it shorted out. i have researched the problem and it has been a major issue with fords for years.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford f-150. while driving, the check engine and wrench icon indicators illuminated, which instructed the driver to call the dealer immediately and not to drive the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to butler county ford (400 s main st, butler, pa 16001, (724) 287-2766) where it was noticed that rodents chewed through the wires. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 18,000.
Loaded up my 6 year old son and 3 year old daughter in carseats in the rear of a 4 door f150. started vehicle turned on rear defrost. within 30 seconds, the rear corner behind my child's seat started to smoke. 30 seconds more and the entire back window shattered. not only was this very dangerous with two young children in the back seat, it was very traumatic for them
Sync 3 disconnects from phone, freezes up while driving causing hazardous condition, known problems and ford has know real fix
Purchased-new 2016 f-150 center rear window defogger quit working at approximately 13,380 miles and 37 months since purchase. purchased the ford premium care warranty which specific lists "heated backglass (electrical only - not broken or damaged glass) as a covered item. rear window glass is not broken or damaged, but ford still refused to cover under warranty. incident submitted to provide for further documentation of existing f-150 issue.
After starting vehicle, could smell electrical wiring burning. couple days later rear window with defroster wires melted. causing window to over heat and break. window repair person at safelite indicated we are luck truck didnt burn up. he showed us the melted wires.
Driving normally on four lane divided state road when warnings about various system failures came up on dash (traction control, braking, charging system). power steering stopped working first then truck shut down. got jump started thinking battery or alternator and truck drove normally for a few minutes then same scenario repeated.
Have had this vehicle to dealer multiple times with complaint of hearing rattling under vehicle and in steering column along with noise from right front brake area. also with complaints of vehicles wandering left and right on highway regardless of road crown. have asked specifically to check the electric steering to ensure not faulty. all these complaints while still under original warranty. today, two weeks after last visit, steering locks up while driving and i cannot turn the vehicle. fortunately, i was on my property going slow and was able to stop safely. i was driving home and drove 30 miles on the interstate doing 70mph. glad the steering did not freeze then. shut the vehicle off and then restarted it and got the 'steering assist fault service required' on the cluster along with a bunch of other symbols. the sync screen came up and froze and could not be cleared nor was it responsive to any other selections on screen. i think this is an electrical issue with either the electric steering, a sensor or possible low or interrupted voltage. this vehicle has no voltage gauge for battery nor was there any indicator that warned of a low voltage issue when the steering wheel would not turn. is nhtsa waiting for someone to be killed with this problem before it is investigated? i am waiting until monday when dealer opens to have them come get this vehicle. i am afraid to even attempt to do anything to it to drive it to dealer for service. i am uploading the latest service invoice for this issue. dealer has consistently stated there was nothing wrong.
Truck experienced multiple sensor failures over several months that reset. failures include car stalling in intersection, blind spot monitoring, back up sensors, car shutting off and turning back on on its own. car had to be powered down and shut off for 30 seconds before being allowed to restart. most recent failure resulted in truck horn going off as well as car turning off while going 35-40 mph then restarting on its own - car surged forward after it restarted itself. at the same time hazards coming on, doors unlocking and locking and rear tailgate opening. after bringing car to a complete stop, shut off car and it turned itself back on (horn went off, hazards went on, doors unlocked and locked, and rear tail gate released). towed to dealership for repairs and they were unable to recreate the problem.
I turned on the rear defroster & the cabin started smoking. i pull over to get out to breathe, one minute later the back windshield shatters completely.
Radio/audio does not work intermittently on 2016 f150 platinum sync system. this is widely none problem with these trucks and ford is not doing anything about it. this is related to nhtsa id #10091432. ford tsb #ssm 45945. this was a $70,000 and ford is accepting responsibility to fix a simple radio issue.
Tl* the contact owned a 2016 ford f-150. the contact stated that while her husband was driving approximately 30-40 mph, 2 miles down the road there was an electrical burning odor coming from the vehicle. the driver exited the vehicle and opened the rear passenger side door where it was discovered that there were flames. the contact was unable to extinguish the fire. the police was called, they extinguished the fire. it was unknown if a report was filed on the incident. the vehicle was towed to an impound lot. the insurance company determined that the vehicle was destroyed. the contact also mentioned that the vehicle was repaired back in february 2019 under nhtsa campaign number: 18v568000 (seat belts, structure) by the dealer (david mcdavid ford fort worth, 300 w loop 820 s, fort worth, tx 76108). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired after the fire. the approximate failure mileage was 48,000.
Rear tailgate opens on it's own while driving.
Sync 3 freezes to the point of lack of use. back up camera delayed. delayed adjustment in sound. bluetooth disconnects/reconnected causing distraction when driving. gps navigation signal will not reconnect or not accurate.
Tailgate opens by itself. has happened while driving at least once (that i know of because i have a bed cap on that has held it in place). the one time i noticed it i was towing a trailer and was fortunate that the tailgate did not get wedged between the trailer jack on a turn. i have now noticed that the tailgate will open and the latch mechanism will continue to fire even after the tailgate is down,
Rear defogger on sliding rear window has become completely disconnected. poor design. when automatically opening sliding rear window, the defogger mechanism gets caught on rear seat eventually, this lead to the rear defogger disconnecting and breaking off from his housing.
Freezing door latches causing the door not to stay shut in cold temperatures or open the door can fly open because you think that it is shut while you're driving down the road causing damage to the door losing personal belongings and if a occupant is not seatbelted flying out of the vehicle the doors on these trucks will not latch when you shut the door they bounce back open and then sometimes you think their latched and they're not then taking a turn and the door swings open ford is aware of this problem they have put out tsb's and fsa in order to try to repair it with no success i personally have had my truck in the shop for this issue 5 to 6 times with no fix this is very dangerous and scares my kids that are inside the back of my truck when their door flying open or when they have to hold it shut while we're driving down the road to school
While driving the interior instrument lights suddenly come on park brake, 4x4, air bag, traction, abs, advance trac, and steering assist. during this process the brakes engage & then you can hear the scrubbing sound of the brakes.this has happened multiple times. i've returned it to the dealer for service 3 times, after a month of diagnostic testing & road testing the steering system failed on the serviceman while driving it. they informed me that they want to return the vehicle to me without making any repairs because it has not re initiated this process in the last 3 days. this is a safety hazard for me and any other vehicle on the road. ford has informed me that if the steering goes out while driving call roadside to bring it back. total disregard for my safety and or anyone else. this event occurs while driving, it also shows these readings upon starting the vehicle. this has happened under 30,000 miles and over that threshold. it has happened on multiple occasions.
It idles rough at stop light sometimes shuts down ,radio screen is blank sometimes w radio or phone call. electrical burning smell enough to make me nauseous. the computer reads no codes. this happens every couple of days, it has been at 2 different shops up to weeks at a time they have changed several parts but none have fixed it.
Back in november 2018 i had my first fault. my brake fluid low sensor came on. it was intermittent at for about 10 miles and than went away. did not another issue until mid december. the light cam back on and over the course of the day, it did not go off. i then disconnected the the sensor so that i did not have to continuously have to listen to the dinging all the time. i also made an appointment with a dealership to fix the problem. they checked the codes and found nothing. kept it for twos and returned it saying they can not find a problem and to bring it back when the problem come back. yesterday, the light came back on intermittent and i got some video of it this time. it only acted up for a short time before going away again. this morning i went to use the truck and and used the remote start to start it. it ran for about 5 mins or so and i got in and turned the key on and put it on reverse. then all [xxx] broke lose. had all kinds of errors come on. had parking brake not released, service engine, check service manual, dim lights, brake fluid low, parking brake on. the gas pedal does not seem to work. the engine revved to 3000 rpm be itself and only moved like it was in ideal. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
My wife left work around 445 pm on 12/27/18, when she started the vehicle prior to putting the vehicle in drive the lights on the dashboard (instrument cluster alone with the radio display) do not come on(total blackout), this is not the first time(2 times prior to this date) this has happen to her but we have notice this occurring during cold weather periods. so my wife drove about 4 miles thinking the light would come on, which they did not, so she pulled into a business parking lot, parked the vehicle and turn it off for about 3 minutes. she then turned on the vehicle at which time all the dashboard lights came on.
Had a fire start in the rear seat area while the truck was warming up in the remote start mode . the remote start was factory installed by ford . the truck was declared a total loss
The complete instrument panel went out. the only thing that worked were the head lights and tail lights the dealer fixed it but don't know what caused it. on a highway about 40 mph
I have had my truck to dealer for many multiple issues involving electrical since approximately 6600 miles beginning with shaking when i slowed down without utilizing brakes. since then i've been at the dealer with many electrical issues where truck would not accelerate and all lights would illuminate. this has been ongoing and very unsafe. when i would attempt to make a left hand turn i would proceed to cross opposing lanes and vehicle would feel like it was in neutral and almost was struck on numerous occasions. vehicle has also over accelerated very early in ownership. most recently and i picked up my truck and a week later same problem. i have had my truck at the dealership with electrical problems that create a great danger to myself as well as other motorists. certainly i cannot be the only person who literally as of the first week of december 2015 received my ordered truck and now after 3 years has had so many close calls when operating the vehicle. all times the vehicle was operational and runs very rough prior to happening. i have been driving down the street and video the trucks camera and other items going on and off during operation. the truck has sever electrical deficiencies and the engine has severe response issues that puts my life. my passengers lives and the other motorist at great risk of injury or death. i am unable to supply all the dates in the one space provided. but have all video and paperwork from all the times and dates from dealership.
Fire and lots of smoke inside my truck when i used my remote start inside my garage ...dropped back seat, pulled carpet back and witness and recorded a burnt wire hanging down across rear window that kept burning and never stopped/popped a fuse or relay until i shut down the remote start. ford dealership said it was the rear defroster that automatically turns on when using remote start ...replaced entire back window and wire harness split cost with ford not under warranty '.
I was driving and there was the smell of burning electronics and my truck cabin filled with smoke. i pulled over, and saw the defroster on the rear window was smoking. i exited the vehicle, opened my doors to let the smoke out, and all of a sudden i heard an explosion like a gun shot and the rear glass glass shattered.
Moments after turning on my car and the heater, my kids started complaining of a strong burning smell. we drove the 5 minutes to school, then i drove 5 minutes home. by the time i arrived home, my back window was cracked and starting to break and there was a very strong burning smell. you could also hear a crackling sound near the back window. this was when the vehicle was stationary.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford f-150. after activating the rear window defroster, the rear defroster wiring began to smoke. moments later, the rear window shattered. the vehicle was taken to five star ford (6618 ne loop 820, north richland, tx) where it was diagnosed that the defroster wiring was faulty and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired and the failure was remedied. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 32,000.
While driving to work strong elec smell and rear window exploded sounded like gun went off shattering window
Driving on hwy at 70 mph using adaptive cruise control all of a sudden it applied the brakes. few days later it did again on hwy nothing around me. stopped using it after second time. lucky no one was behind me. then after i got to my disination the next morning stater my truck first i noticed no power to the front driver & passanger windows then no a/c / climate control, no mirror control so started driving it then noticed tire warning light on but wouldn't show the tire pressures looked at tires and looked like they where fine. when leaving store was backing up and almost hit a car my warning sensor didn't go off now i noticed that all of my safety devices on this truck was not working. now i'm wondering if my airbags are active. drove back home from virginia to tennessee about 6 hr drive very carfuly. next day straight to ford dealer and is still there as i'm writing this. very unsafe to drive. did notice on the adaptive cruise control issue there was a recall on the 2015 models but didn't see any on the 2016.
Horn not working. i purchased a brand new 2016 ford f-150 in 2016. i am the first and only owner and i noticed 2 days ago my horn all of a sudden stopped working when i press on the horn but it will sound when i hit my alarm button on my key fob. the vehicle has not been in any accidents, i checked all the fuses and they are working and have a current running through them. after some research (within google and f-150 forums) a lot of people are having issues with this and having to replace their clock springs.
While driving truck loses power and the hilside assist error comes on. you can't press the gas to go you have to coast and pull over and turn the truck on an off for it to start and work again. happens while you are driving. very dangerous. i am told it is a bad throttle body
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford f-150. while driving approximately 25 mph, the vehicle stalled. the contact stated that several unknown warning indicators illuminated prior to the stalling. the contact was able to stop the vehicle, place the vehicle in park, and restart the vehicle; however, the failure recurred three times. the vehicle was towed to duvall chevrolet (464 us-441, clayton, ga 30525, (877) 818-7723) to be diagnosed and repaired. the contact stated that the vehicle was repaired, but he was not provided with the results of the diagnostic test. the manufacturer was not contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 30,000.
It's happened 9 or 10 times in two years ... try to start it - nothing...try again-still completely dead. sit back wondering what i'm going to do, and the truck will start all by itself while i'm not touching anything. have spoken to numerous mechanics none have heard of it before.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford f-150. while driving 80 mph, the check engine warning indicator illuminated and there were abnormal roaring and knocking sounds coming from the engine. the vehicle was taken to highway ford (18982 johnnie b hall memorial hwy, deridder, la 70634, (337) 462-5497) where it was diagnosed that there was a loose electrical connector in the engine compartment that was not seated correctly. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 56,000. *tt
While traveling on interstate at a speed of 80 mph, my 2016 f-150 eco boost with 50,000 miles went into limp mode due to a faulty electronic throttle body causing me to lose the ability to accelerate and worrying for my family's life as i was decelerating on a busy 4 lane freeway trying to find a way to pull over without being smashed.
Truck has re-occurring frequent episodes of center control panel does not function - when this occurs- radio does not work - no heater -window defroster or a.c / windows can not be rolled up or down - air bag indicator is not working - so don't know if the air bags would deployed if an accident should occur .the truck has been to 1 dealer which said it was a soft wear issue and claimed to fix it .. lasted less than 50 miles and back to square one ,, sitting at the second dealer which states it not doing it now ,, so come and pick it up , they ran a diagnostics and no default codes were found . this is not resolving the issue . if you cant tell me what you did to fix it ..the issue remains unresolved .. a safety issue for all occupants in the cab of the truck .. if the air bags fail to deploy because of the issue stated in this complaint is not addressed by the ford motor company.. i have been in contact with the ford relationship - personnel - and now awaiting for a call from the regional officer ...the truck is still under factory warranty and ford is required to fulfill there obligation to the consumer and fix default product..
I have a 2016 f150 with issues similar to nhtsa complaint id# 10127407. the problems are not intermittent, the part has failed & is not available from ford at this time. the air conditioning quits completely & you cannot run the fan at all. you cannot roll down any windows in the vehicle & the vehicle gets well over 90 degrees inside while driving. this is a huge safety issue because when this doesn't work it also disables the airbags of the vehicle, cross traffic alert as well as tire pressure monitor failure along with other safety features. the seats no longer retract or move forward when the vehicle is started/shutoff. the key fob intermittently will not lock the doors of the vehicle & the alert on the truck says key not found. with the warm temperatures and no way to roll down the windows or turn on the ac or a blower fan makes this vehicle extremely unsafe to operate.
Almost exactly the same experience as incident numbers 11090030, 11063919, and 11048673. there may be others, but, i didn't go any further. i was driving on a bridge without any safety shoulders and the vehicle suddenly lost all power, "hill start assist not available" indicator came on, "service advance trac" indicator came on, and "see manual" indicator came on with the wrench symbol. after nearly being rear-ended by another car, i was able to coast to an off ramp and pull over. the truck was shaking violently. i shut it off and then restarted it and was able to get back over the bridge but then the same exact scenario happened again on the other side. on the way home, it happened a couple more times but i was able to get it home. i scheduled a service appointment at a ford dealer to take the truck in on monday. the vehicle has about 43,000 miles on it. as i mentioned earlier, i was almost rear-ended by another vehicle when this occurred, so, this is an extremely dangerous malfunction.
When driving the vehicle on freeways with adaptive cruise control enabled, if the vehicle approaches a vehicle in an adjacent lane (typically a larger vehicle like a truck with a trailer, semi, or tanker) the collision aid activates and heavily applies the brakes. if someone is following close behind me, as has happened in at least 4 instances, the individual will need to stop and make an emergency maneuver to avoid colliding. in both cases, the braking only lasted momentarily but was enough to reduce the vehicles speed 20-30 mph during that time. the vehicle has been inspected by ford but they have said that there is nothing that they can do. for the time being, we keep this feature disabled until ford can get this issue resolved. there have been recalls for previous years but ours is not included. because of this ford has said there's nothing they can do on multiple attempts to get the problem resolved.
I had my truck towed to auto fair ford and had to have the fuel pump replaced with $100 extended warranty and the car is a year old. after fixing it they were having issues with it not starting and called ford to trouble shoot the issue. today 3/2/18 they called to say a mouse or rodent chewed through the wiring. i have lived i'm my home since 1999 and many cars in the drive way this has never happened before. my brother said the wiring is soy based. i called liberty mutual insurance and comprehensive has a $500 deductible. they will look at the truck 3/5/18 at auto fair ford in manchester nh. i now have to pay$600 to a vehicle i have owned less then 5 months to auto fair ford. seems odd this is happing on a new vehicle
Since i purchased my truck there has been issues with the backup camera. the dealer replaced the apim and had to keep the vehicle for three weeks to trace a bad wire. it has been 10 months and the camera has failed again. i feel as if this is a wider spread issue. ford even expanded the warranty for the previous years apims.
Tl* the contact owned a 2016 ford f-150. while the contact was on vacation, the vehicle caught fire in the driveway. the contact's child was at home, saw the vehicle on fire, and called the fire department. the fire department extinguished the fire. a police report was filed. there were no injuries. the cause of the failure was not determined. the contact's insurance company deemed the vehicle totaled. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified. the failure mileage was unknown.
On january 22 2018 at approximately 11:00 p.m., i started my truck with the remote start, which activates the rear window defroster, as needed. on my 20 mile ride home from work, mostly freeway driving, i heard crackling noises, and i was watching in the rear view mirror, my entire rear window shattering, except for the center power sliding piece. when i got home, pieces of glass fell inside the cab and bed when i closed the door. ford is aware of this issue, but they refuse to repair it. in the meantime, i am forced to pay $500 deductible for my insurance to repair it, even though i had purchased the extended warranty when i bought it brand new. it has approximately 15,000 miles on it now. researching this problem, i believe it is a defect in the glass, causing it to shatter when the defroster warms up the glass.
Vehicle stall out while driving and wont start for a few minutes due do throttle body ford fails to recall..... more people are complaining same thing happens to them on carcomplains.com..... first time it happen i took it to dealer they start they couldn't figure out problem and change throttle body for me. couple week pass same thing starts happening again currently at the dealer.....
