The rear window shattered while having the rear window defrost on and driving on a highway. nothing hit the window, no big bumps or impacts.
Rear window shattered without any impact.
One cold morning i remote started my vehicle sitting in my driveway. after leaving the house i noticed the driver side rear window with slider was shattered. there was no exterior damage or something that made an impact. i have also read many other accounts of this issue on ford forums.
Turned on defrost and rear window shattered while at idle in the driveway. vehicle not moving.. a visible burn mark on glass from defrost grid..
Started vehicle with remote starter. rear glass behind the driver seat shattered. rear glass assembly has already been replaced once. this is a very common failure in f150's built from 2010 to 2014.
2013 f150 fx4 rear window shatters for no reason ,this has happened 2 times ,first time i turned on the rear defogger and 2 mins. later it shattered ,this time mild summer day in the northest sitting in my driveway with the truck off and it shattered again , ,that's not right !!!
Brake reservoir warning light is on - reservoir 1/2 empty. no signs of leaking wiper stays on even if it's off. instrumental dash dims in and out . fuel gage reset b does not reset.
As reported by hundreds of other users, a faulty rear defroster has caused the rear windshield to spontaneously shattered and got pieces in the rear seat. luckily i was parked at my work parking lot, and there was no child in the backseat. there needs to be a recall or a fix for this. as well as reimbursement for my window.
Rear window exploded, shattered, no outside force. passenger side of 3 section window. truck was remote started, idling when i entered it, did not drive, was reading mail in a remote parking lot when window exploded sending micro shards up to 12" on inside and outside of window. more pictures if needed.
I was walking to my vehicle after work in a paved employee parking lot and pushed the auto start on my key. the truck started and i stopped and talked to a coworker for about 1 minute and continued to my truck. after i turned the key to the on position i checked behind me to pull out of the parking spot and the rear drivers side of the 3 piece window was shattered. no marks from an impact to the window. you can't tell the window is shattered from the outside of the truck without getting very close to the window. i do not use the rear defrost option on the truck because i was told that it can malfunction and cause the rear window to shatter. after doing an online search i found out that the auto start can activate the rear defrost. i noticed during the online search that this is happening to a lot of people. unfortunately some of them more than once to the same truck.
While driving to work, i tried to turn on the rear defogger. it was 27 degrees f and the rear window was slightly covered with frost making it difficult to see out the back. after approximately 30 seconds, i heard a very loud bang. i looked in the rearview mirror and saw that my rearview window on the passenger side had shattered. i was going about 55 mph at the time and no other cars were around me. this is the second window in this truck. ford previously replaced the window under warranty due to the rear defogger not working. not long after, the defogger stopped working again. i remember seeing many online posts about the defective rear window defoggers, but i assumed ford fixed the issue when they installed the replacement. now that the window is shattered, it is evident that ford hasn't fixed anything and by the number of online complaints, they don't seem to care either. i don't understand how a recall hasn't been established yet with the safety concerns of broken glass near the passengers in the rear seats.
Rear window shattered with no impact what so ever
. i had remote started the vehicle in the morning. on the way to work the drivers side rear window later shattered with a loud pop with no impact or previous damage. i believe this is due to the rear defroster not shutting off. i have read many other complaints of the exact same thing happening (same section of the sliding window) but ford has yet to accept any responsibility for this.
The defroster on the rear glass caused the back glass to shatter while driving.
I hit the button for the rear defrost, but it didnt light up. i had stopped at a gas station to get a drink and i was sitting in a parking stall with the truck running when i noticed smoke and smelled something hot. shortly there after, about 5 seconds,i heard a loud bang, which sounded like a gunshot. i turned around and noticed that the rear window on the passenger side of this truck was shattered. i believe the problem to be created by the rear window defroster, that when the defroster isnt fully grounded, it causes the window to get too hot causing it to explode. but there is no way to know if the defroster is on or off because the light on the defroster was not on prior to me smelling the smoke and hearing the loud bang.
Rear window shatters by itself, remains in place. in motion on neighborhood, 20 mph, driving straight, 35 deg f outside; defroster off. nothing impacted window.
Rear defrost fails to work. rear window explodes upon use sending glass into occupant space.
On my ford f150 2013 the back window shattered a few minutes after i remote started the truck. the window had no prior damage or imperfections. the truck was parked when this happened.
Rear window shattered despite no impact
Rear window exploded without any impact from a foreign object. during drive i head a load boom and the rear window was broken. a simple internet search indicates that this is a common problem for the ford f-150
While driving with rear defroster on, rear driver side window shattered
January 29, 2019 i was sitting at a traffic light after leaving office and heard a big pop noise, scared me to death. it was dark and cold and could not tell where it came from, it wasn't till i left for work the next morning in the sunshine i saw my back window was shattered (hard to tell with the head rest at night). when i got to office i looked on outside of window for damage but could hardly tell it was shattered and there was no visible damage to outside of glass or body of my f-150. i have a power rear middle window and it was fine, it was the passenger side window. also my rear defrost was not on. this seems to happen to a lot of f-150 trucks. i got a quote and it was $800.00 doesn't seem fair that this is happening quite a bit to all the different model years and nothing has been recalled.
Rear, driver side window just shattered out of no where
Rear driver side back glass shattered while driving. vehicle was at temp. when failure occurred, with rear defroster running. was traveling to work at 60 mph when loud blast occurred in vehicle. i look around to see if i had hit something when i looked in my rear view mirror i noted that the rear driver side back glass was shattered and the the rear defrost that was on was now off. outside temp. per vehicle display was -9 current miles on vehicle at the time of the incident was 59,278. road conditions were icy due to time of year and resent winter storm. loss of control of vehicle and potential fatal impact could have occurred as the sound was intense and did cause me to jerk the wheel. contacted dealer due to model year they stated the issue was not covered at the dealer level and i would have to escalate to ford customer service. ford customer service stated that there is no open claims/warranty for this issue at this time so keep my receipt so if there is in the future i can be reimbursed.
Early cold morning rear window defrost was on when the back rear driver side glass exploded. was driving to work nothing was around this glass. it had been on about 15 minutes when it happened. very loud pop at 60 mph on a four lane divided highway.
Driver's side rear window pane shattered/spiderwebbed after using remote start. entered stationary vehicle ten minutes after using remote start, noticed burnt plastic odor, heard loud bang and looked in rearview mirror to find rear window pane had shattered.
Windshield washers do not operate below below 25 deg f even if reservoir is emptied of summer fluid and filled with -20 degree f winter fluid at end of summer and purged by running pump before cold weather. washer pump motor runs when actuated so problem appears possibly check valve or nozzles at cowl. cowl area cleared of snow and ice. very angerous visibility condition especially during night driving as windshield remains smeared from other vehicles.
Mine just happened last week. same thing, i live in pa and it has been cold here in the mornings and i use my auto-start. i got in to go to work and started down the road and went to put the rear defrost on and the light would not come on showing that it was working. i depressed the button several times but no light. it's dark when i head into to work so i could not see the back window very good. after work i left to go home and again went to depress the rear defroster button and it wouldn't come on. when i looked in the rear view mirror, i could see that the drivers side portion of my rear window was shattered. it was still in place but there was a million fractured pieces i'm assuming being held in place by the tint film. with the window still in place i could clearly see that it had not been hit by anything. there were no markings on the outside of the film as it was still in one piece. if you go to the ford authority site there are hundreds if not thousands of these occurrences. ford should take responsibility for this.
Rear defrost shattered my rear widow on the passenger side.
Early this morning (jan 9, 2019) my husand remoted started his 2013 f150 to heat it up before we left for work (it was mide 30's outside). after running for about 10 min we got in and before even backing out of the driveway we heard a loud pop. it sounded like someone shot our back window with a gun. we saw the back window directly behind the driver's seat was completely shattered. the tint film held it all together, but it was completely shattered. we got out to see if a bird flew into it or to find any reason and noticed there wasn't even a puncture to the window from outside. it was just completely shattered from the inside out. my husband will spend today finding someone to repair and we've now looked it up and found many comments of others having the same problem. can you please help us all and urge ford to issue a recall?
Rear window defroster/outside door mirror defrosters are inoperative. problem was fixed while under warranty at 34,164 miles although also failed again when out of warranty. while not positive, problem could still be faulty electrical contact design on rear window sliding center glass as previous failure. malfunction creates a safety issue as frost blocks rear visibility both from door mirrors as well as rear window. dealer notes rear window assembly must be replaced but without manufacturer cost coverage assistance.
Remote started truck. 10 minutes later i got in, put key in ignition and about 30 seconds later i heard a loud pop. i looked back and the rear window was shattered. defrost was on.
Vehicle was in drive way warming up while i was in i heard a loud pop after examining my vehicle noticed the back glass was shattered.the rear defroster was on during this time.after investigating the matter on the internet several complaints about the rear defroster shattering window. *tr

It was about 20 degrees out and i drove to work with my front and rear defrosters on. after i backed into my parking spot i heard a very loud pop or bang. startled me. i got out and couldn't see anything wrong although it was still dark out. when driving home, i noticed the drivers side portion of the rear power sliding window was shattered. i'm pissed! called the dealer and was told to bring it in for an estimate. was told it's not covered and my warranty is expired anyway. come to find out it's a common problem. obvious safety issue here.
I was driving back from the gas station around 2230 hrs on a winter night. i was going about 35 mph on a city street when i suddenly heard a very loud bang; literally sounded like a gunshot, i quickly looked around, but i didn't notice anything at the time. it was dark at my house when i got home, i walked around the truck but didn't see anything obvious at the time. when i came out the next morning i got into my truck and looked in the rear view mirror and noticed the rear window on the driver side was shattered, no hole, no pieces missing, no obvious signs it was struck. the window is actually bow out a bit like the force was from the inside.
The rear window shattered and no idea how that happened. it happened when it was parked in my driveway. *dt*jb
Used remote start on truck. truck warmed up for approximately 5-10 minutes, outside temp 40 degrees. upon entering truck , a loud explosion resembling a gunshot occured. my 4 y/o daughter frightenly pointed out that the rear driver side glass had shattered. numerous reports of this defect on ford forums.
2013 ford f-150 supercab fx4. power sliding rear window with defrost shattered without impact. i have a fiberglass topper, so there is no way that something from the outside could have impacted the window. the driver-side shattered, but the slider and passenger-side were unaffected. the outside temperature was in the low 30s fahrenheit; not sure whether the rear window defrost was activated. i heard the glass break while i was driving, but did not realize what had happened until i arrived at my destination.when i closed the driver-side rear door, i heard the glass fall out.
Thursday morning 12-6-18 it was about 0 degrees fahrenheit i started my truck and turned on the rear window / mirror defroster. i was about 2 miles from the house when i heard a bang coming from my back seat area on the drivers side it was loud enough that it made me jump. at the time i could not figure out what it was but my rear defroster would no longer work. i messed around with it a few times but it would not light the dash light. later on as the sun was shining just right i noticed the drivers side of my back window was shattered. at that point it all became clear to me what the noise was and where it had come from. f150 back glass shattered with rear defroster on.
Rear drivers side portion of center sliding window shattered for no reason while the vehicle was parked, unoccupied and not running. topper is on the box, which rules out any sort of impact.
At approx 0800 on 12/03/2018 while dropping my daughter off at potomac heights elementry school, we were sitting still waiting in the parents drop off line on the school property when we heard a very loud bang, my daughter pointed at the rear window and said that it was shattered, she pointed at the rear drivers side window, at which time i got out of the vehicle to inspect if we were hit by anything. upon further inspection you can see no impact to the vehicle or the window. i got back into the vehicle and pulled forward to drop off my daughter and at that time reported to the schools staff what had happened. i asked for them to review their video tape and see if something had in fact hit the vehicle and they said they would and call me back. at approx 0845 i called the local ford dealership after looking online to see that it is a very well documented issue that is happening in ford f-150 from 2010-2018 models. i spoke with doug green, the service manager, and he said there are no recalls or service issues currently but that he was aware of the issue and it is a case by case basis through ford. he requested pictures of the shattered glass and my vin and said he would contact ford with all the information and see how we move forward. potomac heights elementry school contacted me, mr stark, karl, who is the principal of the school and after reviewing the video he observed nothing hitting the vehicle and witnessed that the vehicle was stationary at the time of the damage, he also reported observing myself getting out of the vehicle to inspect for damages as mentioned above, he has agreed to provide me with a copy of the video and speak with ford if at which time that is needed as a witness of no accident and nothing hitting vehicle and that the vehicle was stationary when incident happened he will also have a better idea of the approx time of when it took place. md
One of the vehicle's rear windows (the 1 rear window closest to the drivers side; there are 3 rear windows in total) was shattered with no apparent impact point. it was a cold morning and the vehicle was started with the remote start option from the key fob. the vehicle was stationary, parked in the driveway, and had not been moved prior to noticing the shattered window. as the vehicle door was opened, i could hear a "crackling" which resembled the sound of static. i was able to see the shattered window, and it it sounded as though the window shatter was spreading. there were no holes or dents in the window, and there was no "circle" of shattered glass that would resemble an impact point. the last time the vehicle has been driven, the day prior, the window was not shattered.
Remote started my 2013 f150 fx4 crew cab and 10 seconds later heard a loud pop. got into truck and saw back driver side window blown out. truck never moved. looking further and only see defrost controller touching glass.
Driver side rear window shattered after turning on the rear defroster. vehicle was moving on a state highway.
Takata recall , the rear defrost does not work and it has happened to multiple people where the rear glass explodes. i have disconnected the cable connecting the rear defrost to stop it from heating up but it is a common issue on 2013 ford f-150 trucks. if the cable connecting the rear defrost behind the driver side is disconnected the light for the rear defrost works and the side mirrors work but once connected again nothing works
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford f-150. while in his home, the contact used the remote starter to start the vehicle. when he exited his home and walked towards the vehicle, the contact noticed that the rear driver's side window had shattered without warning. the manufacturer was notified and advised the contact to take the vehicle to a ford dealer. the vehicle was taken to holiday ford at (877) 478-5316 (390 n rolling meadows dr, fond du lac, wi 54937), but the dealer refused to service the vehicle because it was serviced at another location and the contact was not a loyal customer. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 102,000.
Takata recall for ford f150 2009-2014 equipped with rear sliding window with defrost feature. rear window or sections of the rear window will shatter if the rear window & side mirror defrost system is engaged. a section of mine broke today while driving home from work. had 22 miles to drive in the snow but it was not that cold outside and i only had the rear defrost on when we first left work and headed out. defroster times out after about 10 minutes so it was off for about 30 minutes and then the drivers side panel pops and cracks. i even had the rear window open a wee bit so i could push more air through the cab to defrost the windshield better.. when i first heard it, i thought a tree branch hit the top of the roof. but the noise sounded a little bit different than some object hitting the truck. the driver rear panel is shattered between the outer and inner glass panels. definitely around the heating element wires and the panel is still intact.
After using rear defrost, left side of the rear window shattered with a loud pop, sending bits of glass onto pax in the back seat. after reading online this is a known issue with this model of truck and needs to be a safety recall.
Using the factor installed auto-starter i remotely started my f-150 to warm up, outside temp was 29f. after approximately five minutes of running my wife and i got into the truck to drive to work. within a minute we heard a loud bang and we thought someone threw a snowball and hit the truck. when we looked in the rear window towards the noise we saw that the left rear window section exploded; luckily the the coatings kept the pieces contained. the rear defroster was not turned on by neither of us.
