On average, the 2010 Ford F-150 starts to “feel” problems with the VISIBILITY/WIPER and its various aspects after 70 096 miles.

Recently reported VISIBILITY/WIPER problems on 2010 Ford F-150

Cranked truck up to warm up 45 degrees outside. got in truck after ten minutes of warm up time. went to shift to reverse and heard a loud pop noticed the passenger side of the rear glass had spiderwebed. this seems to be a real problem with these trucks. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving at 25 mph, the rear defroster was turned on and immediately after a loud abnormal noise emitted from the rear passenger side. after inspecting the vehicle, the contact noticed that the rear passengers side window had fractured. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. the technician diagnosed that the failure was caused by the rear defroster due to the type of factory glass it was made of. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 80,000.

After turning on rear defroster on a 15 degree day i heard some electrical snapping and popping sounds. i turned off the rear defroster for a few minutes then back on again. not long after that i heard a very loud bang which was my right side rear window shattering. it stayed in place but was completely spider webbed with a few small missing pieces. *tr

The passenger side of the sliding rear window shattered approximately 2 minutes after turning on the rear defroster. *tr

The ambient temperature was approximately -10 degrees fahrenheit. i went to warm up my truck and turned on the rear window defroster. when i returned to my vehicle to drive to work i found that my rear window on the passenger side had shattered. i inspected the window for signs of vandalism but besides the spidering of the tempered glass there was no sign of any impact. after an extremely short google search i found this is one of the most common problems with the 2010 f-150. the complaints about this problem are so abundant it's become comical. which is not a good thing ford... you shouldn't be content with your product being a punchline. *tr

Driving my son to school on a cold morning with the rear defroster on. about 10 minutes into our drive we heard a very loud pop and my son noticed that the window behind his head had shattered. after researching this issue it seems to be fairly common among this year model with people describing the exact situations. called ford and they refused to do anything about it. absurd that this defect and the related costs should be passed on to the consumer when it is an obvious issue with the truck.

On the morning of 12/29/14, he had a heavy frost so i used my rear window defrost on my drive to work. drive was approx. 10 minutes. when i got out of the truck at work, all glass was ok. when i got back in truck to leave work, i looked in rear view mirror, i saw that the passenger side of the three piece rear window was shattered. the glass stayed in the frame and did not fall out. i had to spend over an hour on the phone with my insurance company just to file a claim, and it took the glass company two tries to install the new rear window and rewire it to make it work again. ford knows there is a problem because they have changed the design on the window along with the wiring to the window. why will ford not step up and at least admit there is a problem with the rear defrost and offer to fix it.

Rear passenger window (lite) shattered approx. three minutes after rear defroster switched on. vehicle has power sliding rear window. outside temp. around 20f. started truck cold (ambient temp). glass remains intact as of this writing. *tr

Started crew cab f150 fx4 and turned on interior defroster. approx. 5 mins later, while still in park in the driveway, turned on rear defroster. 3-4 minutes later, while backing out the driveway, i heard a loud bang! i stopped immediately and exited the truck to see if i had hit anything. because the car was not near anything other than the driveway, i proceeded out the driveway only to notice the rear, passenger side window (of three) had shattered. window was still in place but completely shattered. will be contacting ford to find a remedy for this. *tr

Approximately 2-3 minutes after turning on my rear defroster, the passenger side panel of the three panel rear glass shattered. nothing struck the glass to cause this. temperature outside was around 36* f, windows were slightly foggy, not covered in frost. *tr

While driving into work, had the rear defrost active for roughly 10 minutes. at a stoplight, noticed smoke rising from outside of the rear window. as i proceeded to pull off the road, heard a loud bang and the passenger side rear window proceeded to spiderweb. the gasket for the rear window has been burned on the lower left hand corner (when observed from outside of the vehicle). it is apparent there is an issue with the rear heating element, as observed by the number of identical complaints on this site. i hope that ford steps up and does something about this before someone actually gets hurt. *tr

Passenger side rear window panel shattered with a loud bang when the rear defroster was turned on. there was a large 6 x 4" hole in the window and the balance was spider webbed. there was glass in the back seat and on the tonneau cover. *tr

while stopped, heard a loud pop followed by the right rear window shattering. no evidence of impact to the outside of the window. took the car to the ford dealer, they said they have no idea why it broke, it is not under warranty and will cost over $900 to replace the rear power slider assembly. i contacted ford: thank you for your response, sarah. i am not sure how your response relates to my email. the rear window burst with no explanation while the vehicle was stopped, no apparent damage to the exterior of the window was observed. to have that assessed as ?operating within ford specifications? is concerning. i have done some research regarding this issue, and understand that my vehicle is not the only one to have this issue. due to your (lack) of response, i will be filing a complaint this afternoon with the national transportation safety administration. my name is sarah, i am from ford`s customer relationship center (crc). i have reviewed your email regarding the concerns on your 2010 ford f-150. i apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. in an effort to assist you with this matter, we have contacted skyline ford. according to their assessment your vehicle is operating within ford specifications. your dealership has factory trained technicians, comprehensive service information and specialized equipment to resolve your concerns. we concur with the dealership's assessment. if you require further explanation or the conditions change, please contact the service manager at the dealership. sarah customer relationship center ford motor company received: 10/22/2014 5:50 pm i purchased my f150 lariat on september 13, 2014. on october 18, 2014 while stopped, the right rear window of the power slider assembly popped and shattered. we could see no exterior damage to the window t(glad for the safety glass). estimated cost $930.00. *tr

I was pumping gas 50 degrees out and drivers side back window blew. *tr

Turned defrost on rear power slider window and heard a loud explosion like a gunshot and the rear window on passenger side shattered. there are small pieces of glass in the bed of the truck and on the back seat. temperatures were in the mild 30s at the time. this was a problem with the defrost causing the glass to shatter. ford will not cover repairs or replacement of the glass. mileage less than 30,000 miles. truck also covered under extended maintenance plan but ford will not cover it there either. *tr

Driver side pane of 3-paned rear window spider web cracked throughout the entire thing, from rear defrost overheating. while taping window up, i could feel tiny shards of glass falling off and sometimes cutting me. *tr

Driving my 2010 ford fx4 when i heard a pop from the rear. the back right rear window glass had "spider-webbed" and slightly shatter with glass falling from it. *tr

The rear window defroster on my power sliding rear window caused the driver side rear window glass to shatter while the vehicle was warming up in my driveway. the defroster had been in operation only 2-3 minutes when a loud bang was heard while i was re-entering the vehicle. i looked for impact damage to the roof, tailgate, etc but nothing seemed unusual, and there were no other people in the vicinity. the damage was not readily visible until i returned to the vehicle in the afternoon, got in, and looked in the rear view mirror time: 4:30am weather conditions: 28 degrees, clear sky, light frost on windows, no precipitation in prior 48 hours. an auto glass installer and a body shop owner both confirmed no sign of any impact damage. a brief internet search of ford owner's forums revealed multiple owners experiencing shattered glass, melted window frames etc. when using the rear defroster on 2010 f-150 trucks with power sliding rear window. at lease four of these incidents have taken place in the past three months. (jan-mar. 2014). *tr

For no apparent reason, the rear window has shattered. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. the contact stated that the rear window suddenly shattered. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. the failure mileage and vin was not available.

I allowed my car to warm up. it was approximately 28 degrees outside. i began to drive my car. i engaged the rear defroster. within 60 seconds i heard a loud bang, similar to a gun shot. along with a smell of smoke. then glass went flying towards the front of vehicle. after looking around i noticed the rear window was shattered. the rear window consists of three pieces of glass. only the passenger (far right side) was shattered. luckily, there was no people sitting in the back seat at the time. took it to the ford dealership, they said the ford company has not addressed the issue. i was told numerous f150's have had similar problems. ford refuses to cover repairs.

While driving to work last friday morning, my rear glass exploded from what looks like a faulty defroster. the electrical wiring was charred and looked melted. i thought that my vehicle had been struck by something. ford refuses to acknowledge that there seems to be a problem with this part. i'm just glad that my children were not in the backseat area when this occurred. *tr

Driving home from work the other day, about 5 minutes after i left the parking lot i was driving on a side road and heard a loud thump or bang like something fell on the roof. however i was on an open road with nothing overhead or nearby. in the summer of 2012 my wife reported similar circumstances one night while she was on a trip, and she later discovered the right rear window had shattered (we had it replaced at an auto glass shop without reporting the problem). when i looked in the rearview mirror, i could see the same thing had happened; the passenger-side section of the rear glass was completely shattered (but remained in the frame). there was no discernible origin; very even cracking throughout all the pane of glass. the rear window defroster was engaged at the time. i have duct tape holding the glass in place and a dealer appointment next tuesday morning. *tr

I was driving on a major state route on my way to work and turned on the rear defroster. i smelled something hot and then a loud popping noise. when i looked in my rear view mirror the rear window had shattered. contacted ford dealer and they said the vehicle was out of warranty 3 months and there was nothing they could do. i asked the dealership to contact ford to see if there were similar instances of this happening. they did not but gave me the phone number for the ford complaint office. i researched online and it seems that this has happened multiple times with this model of truck. because the highway i drive is a major truck route it could have been very dangerous not being able to see out the rear window. *tr

Driving my 2010 f-150 pickup down the street doing 35 mph with the rear window defroster on and after about 5 minutes, pow! the passenger side of the 3-piece window shattered after the loud explosion. after speaking with our local glass repair shop, he stated that he had already replaced 4 of these specific rear windows during the month of january. seems to be a pattern going on here. there needs to be a recall on these windows! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving 35 mph, he heard a loud sound coming from the rear seat. the contact soon realized that the rear window had exploded without any warnings. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was unable to determine what caused the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 41,900. updated 3/14/14*cn the consumer stated the driver's side section of the 3 section rear window exploded into hundreds, if not more pieces. updated 04/01/14

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the rear passenger's side window became shattered. the contact took the vehicle to an auto glass specialist where it was advised that the entire rear window needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure and current mileage was 32,000.

I started my truck in the driveway to warm it up. when it reached operating temperature, i turned on the rear window defroster before pulling out. still in the driveway, after 20 seconds i heard an extremely loud 100+ db pop, which was the passenger-side back glass panel shattering. the temperature outside was 32 deg f (0 deg c) with some frozen precipitation on the upper surface of the truck. there are 27 complaints on the nhtsa site for the 2010 f150 and i found more than 50 additional cases on internet bulletin boards. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving 45 mph over train tracks, the rear window shattered. the contact took the vehicle to a auto glass shop to have the rear window replaced. the contact filed a complaint with the manufacturer. the failure mileage was 33,000.

While driving home from work on 1/15/14, i decided to use my rear window defrost due to the temperature (42 degrees) and the build up of condensation. i turned it on for about 10 minutes until the glass was clear. it took me approximately 30 minutes to drive home where i parked my truck inside my garage. i left about 1 hour later and while looking in my rear view mirror i noticed the sliding window shattered on the passenger side. after returning home i contacted safelite and scheduled to have it replaced through my insurance company. when the repairman came out he realized he had the wrong replacement and was going to order it through ford. he also advised me the window damage started at the connection point of the defrost. after further investigation on-line i realized i am not the only one with this problem. there are many f-150 owners that had the same thing happen to them with some being the glass actually exploded and some with arcing or fire. most of the issues were on 2010 f-150's with some newer models as well and all were on the passenger side slider window. most of the cases i read about on-line were paid out by the vehicle owners and insurance agencies. there were some cases were ford paid the bill. i feel this should definitely be looked into on the safety aspect alone and ford should be held accountable. *tr

Approx 8:30 am temp near 20 degrees f. light snow falling . i turned my heated rear window and mirrors on . after 5 minutes of heating i smelled burning electrical components and then a loud "pop" noise from the rear of the cab. i immediately pulled to the side of the road and noticed that the passenger side of the three piece slider was completely shattered but in place. i called my local ford dealership and they told me that glass breakage wasn't covered under any warranties especially at almost 90,000 miles. i did purchase the platinum extended warranty through ford when new . after paying for the entire window and install myself... the local glass company installer stated that this was somewhat common with these trucks and they have replaced a few. i now don't use the heated windows/mirrors in fear of an expensive repair bill . *tr

Started the car in the morning. turned on the rear defroster. began to shovel the driveway and heard a loud pop from the truck. didn't notice anything until i got in to back up and saw the rear passenger window gad shattered. ford dealer was very familiar with the "window" problem, as they described it. said that because the vehicle was past 50,000 miles that it was no longer under warranty. i rarely use the rear defroster. the dealer said i should take it to the local glass specialist to have it replaced. they never mentioned that it may be an electrical problem. it seems to me that a known repetitive problem should be paid for by ford. if it is an electrical problem, i may be replacing my window more than once. *tr

Early morning left it running with heater and front defroster on. ten minutes later i entered the veh & noticed that i had not activated the back defoggers. (i rarely use the back window defogger since i generally park indoors and to be honest i was not entirely sure where the button was located). i remained in the vehicle with the doors closed and the vehicle remained in park (not in gear). i a few moments passed when i heard a loud sound not unlike the noise made by a 22 caliber rifle shot. my truck is a f150 lariat w/crew cab w/ 3 piece window where the center section opens. all three window sections have defogger wires embedded within the glass. it was difficult to see what had happen due to the early hour and fogged windows but the far right (passenger side) back glass panel had literally shattered as tempered glass does. it maintained its surface and did not fall away thanks to the factory tint-coating. i'm told by the dealer this will cost over $900 to fix. i've talked to several glass companies. this is a well known problem that ford seems to be unconcerned about. i contacted the dealer and ford care but any good will seems to be in short supply and i get the impression that they are resisting taking responsibility for this problem to avoid the great responsibility of fixing this design defect in millions of trucks. my last ford truck had the smoking/burning cruise control problem. i was told that was a random occurrence until i heard on the news about cars burning up due to bad cruise control units. even then, the recall was years in coming and i ended up fixing that one too, also at my own expense. is there any form of compensation or assistance available here that i may have missed? my dealer has offered no help and ford care is worthless. i'd hate to say it but if i end up paying for this out of pocket, my next truck will not be a ford. *tr

This a double entry complaint: i was driving home from work late at night when i heard a bang off the rear window of my f-150. as i was passing under an active railroad viaduct at the time i figured something had fallen off and hit me. i wasn't able to determine any damage at the time as it was very dark in a poorly lit section of freeway in downtown detroit. the next day i walked out to my truck and noticed the rear window on the passenger side looked funny. i got in my seat and noticed the window was shattered. the only thing holding it together was the heater element and the privacy glass film (both factory installed). i filed the usual insurance claim and had it repaired. this past saturday (15 feb 2014) i walked out to my truck to head to work, got in and saw that the drivers side of the rear window was now shattered. it was fine when i parked it after work. backed into my usual parking spot with no trees above the vehicle, too snowy and cold for kids to be playing outside in the lot or field behind the truck. now working with insurance to have this one repaired. *tr

i was leaving from work. i put my rear defroster on my rear sliding window. i heard a loud pop. i looked at the rear window when i arrived home. the passenger side rear sliding window was spider cracked all over. i can't believe there is no recall on this yet. its pretty sad when you buy a fully loaded truck that costs over fifty grand, but you cant use the rear defrost because they malfunction. it's pretty obvious this is a problem...just do a search on the internet. *tr

The rear factory tinted power sliding window shattered on the passenger side approximately 2 minutes after turning on the defroster. *tr

Turned on rear defroster of power sliding rear window, right side passenger section cracked into pieces. no there was no hair line crack no impact to this window. looked at the lower heat strip in the bottom left side of this panel and sure enough there are burn marks. now the back defroster does not work at all. did ford stand behind their product. absolutely not !! this is my 2nd ford truck and as soon as i get rid of this one we will being going gm. thank goodness this is shatter proof glass and was not blown out because my daughter was in her car seat right under this. *tr

I got in the truck this morning and left the house, turned on rear defroster, and about 3 minutes later i heard a loud "pop"! i stopped and looked around but didn't find any since it was still dark out but once the sun came out i saw my rear passenger window, right above my daughter's child seat was shattered. luckily she was not in there. i have spoke with dealership and they have denied any knowledge of this happening, but a simple search here and on the ford forums show plenty of consumers having this problem. this should be a recall! *tr

It was frosty out and i turned on the rear defrost. a few blocks down the road, i heard a pop and my back window broke. i have the electronic sliding rear window. *tr

I turned on my rear window defrost, i after a few minutes i heard a sizzling and the passenger side rear window had shattered. *tr

I had my truck parked outside during a heavy snowfall day at work. i went out and started it to let it warm up and turned on the rear defrost. when i got in to leave i noticed my passenger side rear window was shattered. i had no idea what had happened, not in an area where vandalism is possible. after reading the online posts about others with this problem i realized this is exactly what happened. *tr

2010 ford f-150. outside temperature approximately 28 degrees. started vehicle and turned on rear window defroster. drove about 1 mile and was waiting alone stopped at a light. heard very loud bang noise consistent to a crash or muffled small caliber bullet being fired. stepped out of my vehicle to confirm i was alone on road and wasn't in an accident. (i was completely alone at 6am with no other cars in site). i noticed the right (passenger) side rear window had spider webbed and completed shattered. rear window is 3 panes, right middle, left. right side window that shattered was extremely hot to the touch compared to middle and left (driver) side. contacting ford as i believe this to be a manufactures defect as it has happened to many 2010 f150s with tri rear windows. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph with the rear defroster activated, he noticed smoke coming from the rear passenger's side window. after coming to a stop and inspecting the vehicle, he noticed there was a small hole burned through the window. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis. the technician stated that the power window would have to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 42,000. *tr

Right panel (passenger side) rear window shattered. window is tinted (factory) with power slider and rear defroster. 03/25/2013 electrical burning smell but could not determine the cause (rear defroster in use). 03/26/2013 truck was parked and not running, went to get in truck and discovered right panel rear window was shattered, but still in the frame. *tr

I was driving home on the highway. i had the rear defrost running as it was cold overnight and the windows had frosted over. as i was driving, i heard a loud pop and saw that the rear passenger side window had been shattered in a spider web pattern. i got home and was finally able to inspect the windshield. i observed the "spider web" effect starting in the lower left hand corner of the glass. there was a fluid seeping out from the bottom of the glass at the point of origin. the glass also has a discoloration as if it had been heated. i was able to search online and find numerous other people with the same problem. i also found several accounts where the pop had caused a fire and melted portions of the window and its framing. *tr

Last week i started my morning commute @ 5am. 5 minutes after departure - i heard the equivalent of a 22 caliber gun being fired in the cab of my 2010 ford f150 platinum. alarmed by the sound i swerved into the adjacent lane, thankfully there were not many other drivers on the road. i exited the vehicle and began a visual inspection, immediately, i saw my passenger rear window shattered and smoldering in the lower left corner. after a closer look, this appeared to be where the defrosting mechanism was located in the glass. there was a metal substance being leaked in between the cab and the bed of the truck. i hope this was not lead or mercury, in my curiosity i touched and then thought about the old thermometers in grade school. *tr
