Weather was 28 degrees fahrenheit. leaving work i turned on my rear glass defrost and on my 20 commute to my home about 1 mile from my house at around 4:20 am central standard time my rear passenger side back glass shattered. all i heard was a loud impact sound like something hitting my roof and when i pulled up to my house and further inspected my vehicle that is when i noticed my rear glass had shattered and was still cracking. i looked for an impact mark but found nothing. bed of truck was empty so only conclusion is that the rear defrost may have got to hot with cold glass but i really do not know.
Rear glass shattered while driving, there was no object that impacted the glass. rear window defroster was on while it shattered. outside temperature was 45f.
2010 f-150 was parked overnight in a residential driveway in freezing temperatures. when the truck was started at about 7 am the temperature was around 15 f. the truck was started and allowed to idle for about 10 minutes. when the driver entered the truck the rear defrost was started. while the truck was still parked and about 1 minute after the defrost button was hit there was a large pop. upon investigation, the driver's side panel of the rear window had shattered. there was no evidence of anything striking the window, and there had been no visible defects to the window prior to the incident. the cause appears to be related to the defrost being activated in the cold temperature.
Sitting in my driveway on nov 8th, 2019 i started up my 2010 ford f150 pickup. i sat in the truck while it was warming. we had frost the night prior so i turned on the rear window defroster. not long after the passenger side of the back window shattered. it sounded like an explosion. very scary. the glass stayed intact pretty much but it was all cracked. after i pulled myself together, as i was totally unprepared for something of this nature to happen, i was pretty shook up. i drove to menards to get some plastic to tape it up. as i did the pieces of the window started falling out, both on the inside and the outside. there was glass everywhere. i took my truck to manley motors in belvidere , illinois where they documented it, and also filled out a form and submitted to ford corporate. i also called the ford customer service line and submitted a claim. the claim number is cas24904981. my 2010 ford f150 is out of warranty by years. not by mileage. i only have just over 50, 000 miles on it. it is like brand new still. there is not a scratch on it. in follow up with ford customer service line i was told it will not be covered until nhtsa provides a recall for it. the lady i spoke to was well aware of the back windows being shattered in these pick up. from 2009 up to and including 2016. its unfortunate because it is not covered under my insurance. i am on social security disability, 61 years old and since this repair for parts and labor is nearly $1100.00 it is not in my budget. it will have to be taped with plastic for quite a while

As i was driving to work this morning with my rear defrost on - monday 10-21-2019 around 7:30 am on the same hwy i take everyday, i notice smoke coming from the passenger side back windshield, as think in my mind what the hell i need to pull over to check it out, all of a sudden a loud boom goes off and my back passenger side windshield explodes..after collecting myself i stop to check it out and notice where the smoke is coming from, as i'm looking at my back glass i notice the smoke is coming from the outside of the windshield around the rubber gasket, it was literally melting. i also have a video where you can hear the cracking/ melting of the back windshield
2010 f-150 rear driver side window shattered for no apparent reason while back into my nephews driveway
At 6:00am on 5-26-2019 i started vehicle with both defrosters on. it was parked in driveway. i let vehicle run about 15 minutes to remove fog from windows. upon re-entry i noticed a burning smell like when you start your furnace for the first time in the winter. i tried to locate the odor, i noticed the odor was strongest in rear seat on passenger side of vehicle. i noticed that the back glass was now shattered but intact. a police report and investigation was performed. the officer concluded that there was no impact. i placed packing tape on window to secure glass until it can be replaced.
I was driving to work on 2/5/19, around 6:45am, and had the rear window defrost on. while in motion on a city street, i heard a loud pop coming from the vehicle.the sound was loud enough to be mistaken for a gun shot. after trying to figure out what the noise was, i noticed in my rear view mirror that the passenger side rear window was completely cracked. i was amazed the entire window didn't collapse inward. after coming to a stop and inspecting the window closer, i was unable to see where any foreign object impacted the window. i believe this incident was caused by the rear window defrost heating the window too rapidly and causing the class to expand too much, causing the failure.
Takata recall. when pulling out into traffic on a very busy highway as the on coming traffic speed limit is 50mph, i'm pulling out on the highway with a safe distance between cars on this busy road as i accelerated my 2010 f150 fx4 super crew cab "with my family in the truck i might add" the truck just down shifts and it slams me and my family forward "like i hit a tree going 30mph" the truck shuts off completely and a symbol of a wrench pops up on the dashboard. with no power steering, no power breaks, no way to safely move the truck off the road at this point due to the traffic i was trying to avoid was passing me going at least 50mph almost getting rear ended by several cars and semi trucks, i push the flashers on and pray that nothing bad happens and coast until the truck finally comes to a stop after about 30-45 seconds. i get out of the truck after the group of vehicles pass by and inspected to see if the engine or transmission was blown up or leaking fluid and nothing at this point so i'm stressed out because my family and i could have very well died and there is no proof of this when i restarted the truck no symbols was present when inspected by a mechanic. i keep telling the mechanic that it has no power any more, it sooooo sluggish i can't even drive the truck much anymore, only on short trips to the store. we had to cancel or vacation and cancel the purchase of a camper for our vacation. i'm sorry but if ford was a real symbol of safety and security of its owners this would have never happened in the first place. this needs to be fixed asap!!!
The passenger section of the rear window shattered while the rear defroster was activated. the vehicle was parked in a parking lot of a restaurant and without anything impacting the window it just shattered. for about a week leading up to the incident there was a funny smell whenever i used the rear defroster, melting plastic, that i couldn't pinpoint. initially, i though it might have been the seat heaters
Rear window glass exploded with rear defroster on, during snow storm
After turning on the rear defroster, the drivers side rear glass panel shattered.
The passenger rear window lite (glass) on my 2010 f-150 svt raptor shattered when the vehicle was parked running and the rear defroster was on. the shattered glass stayed in place, but requires the complete rear window to be replaced. this is a common reported issue online with ford trucks of this age, where ford will not issue a defect replacement.
The rear window shattered after turning on the rear defroster. the passenger portion of the rear window shattered. this happened approximately 2-3 minutes after turning on the defroster. the vehicle was in motion on a city street. the outside temperature was in the low 20s. there was an extremely loud bang and then we noticed the glass was shattered.
While driving down the road with the rear defrost on the passenger side rear window (there are three with center one powered) shattered. there was a loud pop and the window was cracked into hundreds of pieces. window was still in place. there were no signs of impact on the window. the vehicle was going about 50 mph on pa 75 (2 lane highway) near clay lick, pa in a fairly straight stretch of roadway.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. the contact stated that the rear driver side window suddenly fractured. the contact reached out to several different window repair companies who stated that the entire window needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the vehicle was not repaired. the dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 73,000.
Was driving down the road and noticed the right side of the rear window smoking. before i could pull over, the window exploded and the entire right side was shattered. my son was sitting in the seat directly in front of it. upon further inspection, i noticed where the rubber seal around the window was melted from burning, and there was liquid draining from the area. i was traveling to take my kids to school and had my rear defogger in use. i have noticed numerous complaints about this issue from others, but ford has not issued a recall. *tr
Back window passenger ( sliding back glass unit) shattered after approximately 12 minutes after turning on rear defroster. the temperature was 34f with no frost on back window. it sounded like a small gunshot when it happened. after speaking with the dealer i found out that this is a common problem. ford refuses to fix the problem. estimated cost from the dealer are $700+.
While using the rear window defroster, i heard a loud thud. i looked back and saw a shattered rear passenger window. also noticed smoke from lower corner. i was reversing out of driveway at a slow rate of speed. outside temp was 20f.
I was parked in my truck, warming it up on a ~10 degree morning. the back glass had a layer of ice and i turned on the rear defrost. a few minutes later, while still parked in my driveway, i heard a loud pop. the passenger side back glass was shattered. it is a power sliding, tinted back glass in three sections.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. while driving approximately 65 mph, the contact heard a loud pop and the rear passenger side windshield shattered. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing, but was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the approximate failure mileage was 74,000.
I left home for work on 12/8/2016. the temp was 7 degrees out and my back window was slightly iced over. i turned the rear defrost on to clear up the window. within ten minutes i heard what sounded like a gun going off. upon inspection i realized that my rear 3 peace window had spider cracked into thousands of peaces. the sound it made sent me off the road to a frantic stop. this was in town going 30mph. i'm so glad my kids weren't in the rear seat as there is quite a bit of small glass peaces. this will set me back $600 and i cant imagine ever using the rear defrost button again as it might be a faulty switch that caused this or a faulty window. it seems the more i find on the internet the more i realize this is fairly common. ford motor co.should really do something!
On a 20 degree morning i turned on the rear defrost and in about five minutes time i hear a loud noise. upon looking around i found the back window had shattered on the passenger side. i was stationary at the time, thankfully, because the sound was a lot like a gun blast and if driving i could have swerved, it startled me so much. the window is shattered into thousands of pieces and visibility out of that window is severely hampered. this is an obvious design flaw and it effects the safety of the vehicle and a recall should be issued. *tr
Got into vehicle for 1 mile trip to train station, outside weather conditions were 46 deg. f and overcast. turned on windshield defrost - both front and rear. after about 10 minutes of sitting in the parked vehicle off of the street, at 5:23am, the passenger side rear window popped very loudly. when investigated, the rear window was shattered.
Drivers mirror was foggy due to early morning moisture. turned on my heated mirrors which are also connected to the rear sliding window defroster. about 2 minutes later while driving i heard a loud sound, like a gunshot. the passenger side back glass had shattered due to the defroster imbedded in the glass.
Was operating the rear window defogger and the rear passenger side section of the power rear window slider shattered. the local ford dealer acknowledged it is a problem but ford has not recalled. the local window repair company said that most times it is the passenger side that shatters. the truck is out of warranty and repair is not covere.
While using the rear window defrosters, the rear passenger window shattered. this is the second time this has happened to this vehicle. the first time, ford covered it as a warranty. this time they will not cover it since it is over 100,000 miles. both the service manager at the ford dealership and the customer care representatives acknowledge this has been a problem with these vehicles. both times the window shattered occurred while driving on the highway. the first occurrence happened in june and the second time was in february. temperatures were extremely different. june was in the mid 70's and february was 0 - 5f. the shattered glass went all over the rear passenger seat. clean up was a hazard as the glass is very sharp.
I was parked in my vehicle, was about 25 degrees outside i had my rear window defroster on after about 10 mins of being on the back glass passenger side popped.
I was driving this morning with the temperture around 30degrees. i turned on my rear defrost to thaw my mirrors and rear glass of frost. within 10 minutes of leaving my driveway, while driving i heard a large pop that resembled a gun shot, my daughter started screaming and stated my back window had broken. there are burn marks on the defrost contacts, shards of safety glass off of my window that shot out when exploded with my 5 year old daughter in the rear seat and her car seat. vehicle was in motion approx 55 mph. the sound alone caused me to lock up my brakes out of instinct to investigate the loud noise that sounded like a gun shot and to examine the vehicle. this is a serious safety issue and needs to be addressed! there was a burning smell of what smelt like electrical wire burning present when this happened and minimal smoke in the back of the vehicle.
It was 7 degrees this morning and there was ice on my rear window. i turned on the electric defrost and about 5 minutes later i hear a loud bang. the passenger side rear window exploded / shattered into pieces. we called ford and they are not willing to rectify the situation or addres it in any way.
While operating the vehicle on a cold morning, i engaged the rear window defroster. the car was in traffic on the interstate on wi hwy 45 travelling 70 mph. shortly 2-5 minutes of turning on the electric defroster, the glass shattered rather violently sending glass into the passenger compartment and truck bed.
Wife was driving home on a 30 degree snowy day with rear defroster on. backed into the garage and as she turned the truck off a lot bang occurred. i was in the garage at the time and realized the passenger rear window spider cracked and essentially shattered. ford says there is no recall, had replaced the next day for 600 dollars.
While driving my ford f150 on a state highway i turned on the defrost switch for the rear window. within a few minutes time the rear window panel shattered with a loud pop expelling glass shardes over the rear seating area. a smell of burning plastic accompanied this incident causing me and my family to pull off the road and evacuate the vehicle. this truck has 58000 miles on it and ford says its not there problem although after researching this many people have had this same experience.
While driving down the highway, i turned on the rear window defroster to melt some snow on that window. no cars in sight in either direction. suddenly there was a load noise (almost like a gunshot). the back sliding window panel on the passenger side blew out. there appeared a hole about the size of a softball. the rest of the same panel was shattered. my wife and i literally jumped. she hollered. at first we thought someone had shot the window. i can only imagine what would have happened if someone was sitting in the back seat in front of the window when it blew. i asked the man who installed the new one and he said he does about 5 of these a year. i checked online, and one website had 104 complaints about the f150 window blowing out. i think this should be checked into. *js
It was a 45 degree day i turned on rear defroster for approx. 10 minutes vehicle was stationary i heard a loud pop and passenger side rear glass in the 3 piece unit was blown out this was followed by the smell of burnt rubber i have read many other complaints on this issue please review.
While driving on a local road (approx. 45 mph, raining, approx. 50 degrees outside) heard a sound that sounded like a gun shot. looked around and didn't see anything next to me or behind me. when next stopped the truck got out to check to see if something happened to the truck body. then realized the passenger side back rear window shattered. (it's a 3-part rear window.) looking very closely, the glass spidered, starting from the bottom corner closest to the center window up to the opposite top corner. the glass spidered inside the car. outside the glass, although still intact, was buckled facing out. at the time this happened, the rear window defroster was on. when got back in truck to travel home, during the drive the window broke with small pieces of glass falling all over the back seat. very lucky that no one, family or pet, was in the backseat when this happened as would have been hit by broken glass. believe this issue is related to rear defroster along with glass manufacturing. contacted the local ford dealership and since car is out of warranty they can fix but at least $1000. contacted ford motor company, no recall available.
I was driving down the freeway at about 65 mph. i was the only vehicle in traffic. as i was going down the road with the rear and front defrost on, my driver side rear window shattered and had spider web cracks all through the window. there have been many other complaints about the rear windows shattering. tons of witnesses could be found by a simple google search of 2010 f150 rear window shattering. please investigate.

Driving down the road after having the rear window defroster on for ~5 to 10 mins heard loud pop. thought something hit the truck upon investigation found rear passenger side section of back glass shattered but still in place. googled problem on internet and found many other instances that had this same issue on several forums. no signs of impact where anything hit the window. *tr
2010 ford f150 platinum left rear window shattered when using rear window defroster. turned defroster on and heard a loud crack after approx 3 minutes use. 11/21/2015. similar to other scenarios and replies posted here but i have added some photos. it would appear a water leak has caused water to build up in the track and shorted the circuit. 1st image of shattered window. 2nd image of melted window casing.
Rear glass shattered upon use of the rear defrost.
Blend door actuator, temperature actuator, heating & air system quit working correctly on driver's side of vehicle. apparently this is an issue on other ford models. luckily i was not in a situation where the windshield was foggy or icy. but very concerned that it could be a problem for others. if this part would fail someone in a ice storm or very humid conditions, it would become a vision problem for the driver. in researching this issue several others people have had problems - i do not know if any resulting accidents occurred.
Started rear defrost due to fog on the windshield. drove about 5 miles at 25 mph and heard a very loud pop. it sounded like something hit the roof. proceeded to work and looked at the rear glass. the passenger side rear window was completely spiderweb. tape was placed on the window in an effort to hold shards of glass that were falling off. as i was taping additional small glass shards were found. ford is unwilling to admit that any of this might be due to a product defect. this will cost around 600.00 to replace and of course a day off work.
Was driving my 2010 ford f150, turned on rear window defroster. just took off from stop sign and it sounded like a shotgun going off. stopped and my rear window was shattered. was going less then 10 mph. is there any recall on this? now i have to file a incident report with my insurance company and i did nothing to cause the window to shatter. if there is no recall why not !!!!!

While parked in a parking lot, heard load pop sounding like a gun shot. found rear window shattered in many pieces. after doing research found this is a common issue with this make and model. should be a safety recall issue. *tr
