I see a lot a ford f150 owners after 80,000 miles having trouble with the steering joint in their trucks the steering starts sticking and steering gets very hard. it's just not my truck lots of owners are having the same problem.
The steering got vary tight on the highway. then i got off the highway and pulled into a parking lot. suddenly the steering wheel broke while entering the parking lot.i could move the steering wheel. but it was not turning the tires. thankfully i was in a parking lot and not on the highway which i had just left. if i was on the highway i would not be writing this complaint. because i would be in the hospital or dead!
11/29/18 will be the 6th time my engine shut off when coming to a stop and making a turn. other 5 incidents were about 3 years ago. each occasion, slowing down to a stop, engine shuts off while making a turn, and i put it in neutral while pressing brakes, starts up, and i keep going down the road. 122k miles, love the truck but this has me very concerned for my family riding in the truck. i looked up any recalls but did not find anything regarding this. f-150 forums have the exact same incidents and when taking to ford dealership, they cannot find anything wrong. please let me know my options of getting ford to do something.
Steering gets hard and easy when driving seems dangerous?? or setting turning different speeds
Steering gets easy and hard when it's warm (75+) not power steering pump. rpms have no impact. not steering shaft, power steering pump, power steering fluid, ball joints steering rack... mechanics are at a loss. about 33,000 miles.
While driving my vehicle, the steering became so heavy that i was barely able to make the turn and was almost hit head on by a vehicle on a two lane highway where the speed limit is 55. after doing some research, this apparently is a common problem in this vehicle. i had it repaired and the bill was over $600.00. there should be a recall initiated by ford motor company before someone gets killed when their power steering fails. in a f150, it is very difficult to turn the wheel without power steering.
Power steering cuts. this lariat f150 2010 vehicle has 115000 miles on the engine. this happens infrequently. it can be the first start in the morning or a restart after the vehicle has run for hours. always happens on a restart, not while the vehicle is running.
The steering shaft has two u joints, the one closest to the exhaust manifold siezed up making it almost impossible to steer, very dangerous when pulling a camper at highway speed to say the lease. i had it fixed by a ford mechanic (part was 300 bucks alone) and he said it is very common on them. i noticed a recall on the crown victorias for the same issue on the police models. why is there not recall on the f 150?
Steering effort is hard then easy then hard as steering is turned. hard to turn when parking. steering shaft u joint is bad.
When slowing down (at an intersection for example) to make a turn the vehicle dies and makes it very, very difficult to turn because the power steering does not work. i have almost gotten into two accidents because of not being able to stay in my lane during the turn. i have never seen a truck so difficult to turn when the engine is not running. additionally, the truck will not start after fueling. i had the truck towed the first time it happened and the ford dealer (madison county ford in richmond, ky) said it was a transmission problem. the first time i put fuel in the truck, it would not start. it sat a couple of days and started. the engine was stopping just as it did before. took it back to the same ford dealer and they said they had diagnosed the problem properly. i spend $2,216 on what they said the problem was and it was still doing the same thing. the paramount issue is when the truck dies while driving and it can't be steered properly.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. while driving 10 mph, the vehicle lost steering functionality. the vehicle was towed to jarrett scott ford (2000 e baker st, plant city, fl 33563, (813) 752-4171) where it was diagnosed that the steering rod had fractured and separated from the steering wheel. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 92,000.
Steering column broke at steering wheel knuckle leaving it unable to steer. made with cheap plastic causing wreck. i was on a country rd were i veered into a bridge column
I own a 2010 ford f-150 fx4 4x4 5.4l pick up. the intermediate steering shaft was binding up, causing a heavy steering condition, steering not returning to center after turning and a binding condition. the part was replaced at approximately 36k miles by washington ford in washington pa. approx 2 years have passed and at 63k miles experiencing the same conditions with ford replacement part. took the vehicle back to washington ford in washington, pa for diagnosis on 5/4/17. service department could not detect or diagnose an issue. i took the vehicle to a local repair center on 5/16/17 where tech determined that there was a binding issue with the replacement part. an after market part has been ordered for replacement. after a long search at local ford dealerships for the part it was discovered that a number of ford parts dealers as well as big box parts houses have the replacement parts on back order. woltz and wind ford in carnegie was reporting to me a 40 quantity back order for the part. many complaints observed online. appears to be a safety concern with numerous owners online. please advise. stock image attached thank you
In 10/2016, my steering fluid began leaking and it was determined that my steering rack was faulty. as ford did not have this part available, i was forced to accept an inferior after-market part and incurred a whooping bill of $1,400 for the first repair! as of today, 1/18/2018, my truck is back at the ford garage for replacement of my 6th after-market part which also leaked after installation. i was informed in february 2017 that ford would have an actual ford steering rack, but almost almost a year later, i'm being forced once again to accept an inferior after-market part. to make matters worse, not only do we have the inconvenience of having only one vehicle, but we will again have an expensive repair bill which we should not be responsible for paying. most of all, the safety issue involved in our situation is the most concerning as this fluid leaks onto the highway, as well as the fact that my ability to steer my truck could at anytime be compromised resulting in an accident.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. while driving 15-20 mph around a corner or over a bump in the road, the contact heard an abnormal popping noise in the steering column. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the local dealer (morlan shell ford inc, 1824 porter wagoner blvd, west plains, mo 65775, (417) 256-3193) where it was diagnosed that the springs, universal joint, and bushing needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. additionally, the vehicle was taken to wehr ford of mountain grove (11311 us-60 bus, mountain grove, mo 65711, (417) 926-3192) where it was diagnosed that the slip yoke needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 78,400.
Bought new in april 2010, ford xlt150. now at 73k mi. last two weeks. could not start twice after filling up. had to keep flooring vehicle to crank over.hi performance battery is two mths old. died at red light three times. died at yield sign twice.died at bank atm once. lost steering control when engine died coming out of yield sign. luckily hit no one.took it to ford dealership, asked about recall notice or if others had similar problems. negative response on both. told them thousands of same problem posted on internet. they told me many people just post stuff. many posters said ford dealers computers showed no problem when truck is hooked up.taking it to an independent mechanic shop. too dangerous to keep driving. will injure someone and myself,or worse. will be notifying ford.
2010 ford f150 stalls when going slow, and turning left. the oil light came on and i lost all power i had to put in park and restart. took about 5 tries for the truck to restart. it did the same thing again about five minutes later while making another left turn. also, died when i was sitting at a light preparing to turn right.
I live in a metropolitan area where there is always a high volume of traffic and losing power of a vehicle is a dangerous situation. driving in 5:00 rush hour traffic and accelerating from a red light when my ford truck entered into a "limp home" mode (wrench icon and oil lamp appeared) it stalled out. i was able to coast into a parking lot even though i had no power steering or brakes. eventually, i was able to start my vehicle. my truck drove fine but now and then had a hesitation to start. about a week later, it stalled again; this time it did not start. i was a block from my office and we pushed it back. i had it towed to a local shop and was told it was the fuel pump. i work in outside sales and had to have it replaced $700. the truck drove ok for about a month, but still hesitated on starting. in june, once again it stalled. i took it back to the shop and they could find nothing wrong. july 9th, i was driving about 55 mph when i came to a signal light and stopped. the light turned green, i begin my left hand turn and the truck stalled. i had it towed to ford dealer. they are saying that now it is the fuel pump battery junction box, another $2500 and it will take after labor day before i get my truck back because there are no parts available!!! rent a car for 2 months on top of that!!!
While slowing for a stop engine shut down. no engine lights or warnings were displayed. steering locked up. truck restarted with no problem. very dangerous. *tr
Leaving red light, truck stalled. oil light came on, lost power steering, brake. was able to coast at an angle to the side. could have caused an accident or traffic jam. put truck in park, waited a minute, turned back on and gave it gas. ran fine after that. took to dealership next day. they said would not be any way to know what happened without pulling engine apart. suggested multi point inspection and tune up. did not mention this issue occurring previously or the numerous complaints of this issue online. they found a dusty air intake sensor that could have caused the problem. changed spark plugs and performed tune up & oil change. incident happened again leaving gas station pump on dec 29, 2014. when restarted, it cranked several times but wouldn't fire up. tried 3 times before successful start. ran fine after that. afraid a stall at high speed or when pulling my horse and trailer will cause major accident. have seen complaints of fuel purge valve or throttle body butterfly valve causing this. needs to be addressed by ford. *js
Tl*the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving various speeds, a noise emitted from the steering wheel. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who replaced the inner and outer tie rods. the failure persisted after the repair was performed. in addition, the engine stalled and restarted on two separate occasions however, the dealer was unable to locate the problem. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 71.400. updated 7/7/15*cn updated 9/29/2017*cn
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. while driving approximately 35 mph and attempting to apply the brakes, the vehicle hesitated to stop and the power steering failed. the vehicle stalled, but was able to immediately be restarted. the failure occurred several times. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the approximate failure mileage was 49,000.
I was involved in a low-speed 45 miles a hour front end collision. i was in a ford f-150 4 door 2-wheel drive. my seat belt worked great. the air bag went off but did not hit me in the face. the front of the truck was crushed badly but with no fluid leaks. after the wrecker pull my front bumper free from my front tires i was able to drive the truck back home about 100 miles. all system worked great. the truck showed that the ford safety system worked well. i had no injuries except for my left hand. and that is the complaint. why would ford or ntsb allow a ford design that not only can help save a life but for sure will injure the very person they are trying to save. being a engineer myself i believe they could design the tear pattern, which is the problem, on the steering wheel air bag so that it did not fly open left & right and inflect a severe blunt force injury to my thumb by the ford emblem. the injury is just like i was hit with a hammer on my thumb. it did not break my thumb but a severe skin break and bruise that took 2 weeks to heal. i have pictures if that would be of help. have ford engineering call me and i will show them how to fix the problem. i do not like to be injured while you are trying to save my life. ford can do both. save my life and not injure me at the same time. I started my truck on a cold morning and no more then 10 seconds after i started it my power steering line exploded off and power steering fluid went every where. since march of 2013 it has come off two more times december 2013 and january 2014. i've looked at other f-150 motors and we have the same set up, so i'm not sure why mine keep exploding off. thank you [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
While breaking to make right hand turn engine stalled. first indication was truck was impossible to steer. i was able to stop truck in the middle of the intersection. at a higher speed this would have been deadly. ford dealer claimed to have never heard of the problem even though an internet search shows thousands of such incidents, many of them reported to this agency. dealer was unable to find a cause, although the manager said it was likely the throttle body but he could not replace a part under warranty unless it was positively known to be defective. i was sent on my way to risk my life in an unsafe vehicle. *tr
Discovered power steering out of fluid- refilled and noticed it runs out every day- took to dealer and discovered bad hose- on backorder for two months- have to refill every day and pray that it doesn't fail me going down the road- steering loss is not a good thing in my book- this is a two year old truck and the lack of parts is a serious problem to me as i have to drive the truck daily- *tr
For no apparent reason power steering pump made laboring noise when wheel turned. observed leaking power steering hose. diagnosed by ford dealer as such and could not repair due to a national backorder of the needed hose and neither ford or dealer could say when the part would be available. vehicle is under extended warranty however the third party warranty company wouldn't warrant repair using a locally fabricated hose because fabricator would not warrant part for 12 months therefore i am faced with paying for entire cost of repair by dealer. neither dealer nor ford would own up to paying for the repair or rental of a car while my truck is in shop. *tr
Engine stalls at low speeds causing loss of steering and braking. there was no check engine light or error code when this first occurred. after the engine had stalled for about 32-35 times, the check engine light finally came on. i took the truck to a local mechanic shop to read the code which indicated that the evap system was blocked. my dealer determined that a solenoid in the fuel evap. system had failed. as a result the fuel tank was collapsed by vacuum because there was no secondary tank vent. this is dangerous! there should be a secondary vent or a pressure/vacuum sensor to prevent the tank from being collapsed. note: the tank was collapsed so much so, as to damage the pump/level sending unit assembly. *tr
On may 8th 2012, my truck stalled while i was merging into traffic at approx. 55 mph. the vehicle was brand new when i purchased it in may of 2009 from gulf coast auto ford in angleton, texas. so, i had them tow it to their shop for repairs. the mass air flow sensor was replaced on may 9th, and i drove the vehicle until friday , may 11th, when the same problem occurred. the vehicle stalled at traffic speeds, died, and then couldn't be restarted! this second incident also resulted in my having the vehicle towed to the dealership where i am told that they can't find the problem!! it now starts after the stalling, but not until a period of hours passes. what can i do? this is a serious safety issue? ford is telling the dealership to put an on-board data recorder on my truck that they cannot even get from ford! i only have 52000 miles on this vehicle and have cared for it meticulously. *tt
I was driving down the highway around february 6th 2011 and my 2010 f150 stalled on me. i was able to crank it back up and keeping moving. this was not the first time this happened. it was the worst one seeing has how i was doing maybe 60. i took it to the ford dealership and they said they could find a problem while driving the truck, so downloaded some new software to my computer and said that should fix the issue. on april 11th the same thing happened again, i was driving in a parking lot and my truck stalled. i wasn't able to crank the truck back up for almost 30 minutes. when i was able to start it back up there are a burning smell coming from the truck. i this time had the truck towed to ford and spoke to them today and they stated they again found nothing wrong and couldn't recreate the problem. the have contacted ford hq for answers. my worry is that i am going to get in a crash because of this problem. i have done some looking around on the internet and found a lot of people having this issue, and nothing seems to be getting done. *tr
This f-150 pick up truck was purchased in april 2010 as new. everything was ok until april 2012. the truck stalled without warning when it slowed down or made turns. the engine died and no power, no steering. i was able to restart it and sent the truck to the dealer shop right away. on the way to the dealer, it stalled couple of more times. luckily, no other cars were behind, otherwise i could not imagine what would happen. the dealer could not duplicate the problem or get a code. i checked online and noticed many 2010 f150 owners had same problems. some of people mentioned to change throttle body, so i told the dealer shop and got throttle body changed. during the next 2 months, it did not happen again. however, on july 5th 2012, it stalled again when i made turns in the local. i sent the truck back to the dealer shop again and they still did not know how to fix the problem, since it happened intermittent. now i am afraid of driving my truck. absolutely no drive on highways. the people have already complained the 2010 model that the trucks stalled on the highway at >65 mph. it is a severe safety issue. i am very frustrated since the truck is not living to what it is suppose to be. *tr
When declerating to a stop or stopped the engine will die. when i attempt a restart the engine will try to turn over for 10-15 seconds then stop. after 3 or 4 attemps and giving a little gas the truck will start. this has now happened 5 times to me in the past 2 weeks. i took the truck to ford and they didnt return any codes so nothing repaired. they fit my truck with a recorder and i am suppose to press a button next time it dies. this seems to be a serious issue as i have seen dozens of posts with the same issue. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. the contact stated that on six or seven occasions, the steering wheel seized while driving at various speeds. the failure occurred on an intermittent basis. the vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 24,000.
Steering wheel seized while in right hand turn at 10 mph. the vehicle sounded bells but the engine remained running. the breaks barely stopped the vehicle. attempts to turn the steering wheel after stopping were unsuccessful even with force. turned the vehicle off, let it set for a couple minutes then started the engine which resulted in normal steering. the vehicle is now at tuttle click ford in irvine, ca. *tr
My truck wonders all over the road and shakes to the point that the passenger is sick. hard to steer out of ruts and crosswinds blow the truck in to the next lane and you can't control it. can't take your eyes off the road in front of you to even look at the exit signs because the truck is unsafe and unpredictable to the point that your hands are going to turn numb from lack of blood in your fingers due to the white knuckles from hanging on to the steering wheel so tight. very unsafe. i have taken it in to the dealer 4 times now and they have replace both front springs and struts and have replaced the rack and pinion 2 times now. i was told that the factory tires are not that great and have soft side walls and that could be the reason as to why it's not fixed and the ford shocks are under rated for the vehicle. so i have put new bilstien 5100 shocks on all the way around and have put better tires and wheels on it. truck still does the same thing. this truck is unsafe and have read other complaints on here. here are the other complaint #'s. 10392353, 10407502, 10336730. i just can't believe ford has not acknowledged any of the complaints on this site. someone is going to die or burn to death and i hope it's not me or my family. the only recall i can find on this truck is the door handle and was told it doesn't pertain to my truck. i would like to file for a class action lawsuit if anyone is interested because i know i am not the only one out there who is afraid to drive their $46,000 truck that's not even 2 years old yet. this truck was suppose to be built ford tough. i will be trading this p.o.s in as soon as i can cough up all of the negative equity that i have acquired due to the high price of this lemon. i have said my peace and now it's on file just in case i crash and burn, at least i know my family will be taken care of now (i hope). *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. the contact stated that he was experiencing a recurring failure with the rear doors. the warning light indicating that the rear doors were ajar was continuously illuminating without the contact engaging the doors. the rear doors were off track and the dealer replaced the doors four times in an attempt to correct the failure. in addition, the power steering fluid line was corroded and needed to be replaced. the contact also stated that the battery failed and needed to be replaced as well. all of the failures occurred within the first 20,000 miles driven on the vehicle. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 1,500 and the current mileage was 20,000. *tr
While driving toward a busy intersection the vehicle lost all power! including brakes and steering! i rolled out into the major highway causing vehicles to have to swerve to miss me! this is not safe!! the emergency lights would not work, nor would anything else on the vehicle. after about a minute the power came back on to the truck as if nothing had happened. i have 2 babies that ride with me and will not take a chance of this happening again! the truck is now at the dealership and will not be picked up until the problem is fixed. i have also contacted and retained a lawyer should this major problem become an issue for me. this is obviously a vehicle defect that can be closely compared to the toyota recall! someone is going to get killed with this problem!!
We have experienced six different instances since december where the engine would completely shut down while in motion. range of speed at time of incident has been between 5 - 40 mph. on january 23, 2011, while driving at 40 mph down a windy hill, the vehicle flashed the wrench light then completely shut down causing a loss of power steering. as a result, i had a near miss of a head on collision with another vehicle in the oncoming lane as the truck i was driving veered into the oncoming traffic because i was unable to immediately regain control. typically the truck can be put into park then turned back on but not in this case. the latest stall of the engine occurred on february 9, 2011 while making a turn in a grocery store parking lot. the vehicle was towed to a dealer on january 23, 2011 and the dealer indicated that the could not duplicate the problem and the computer reading did not show faulty equipment. in addition, i am experience a problem with the fuel gauge. even after completely filling up the vehicle, the gauge does not read as full. there are functional problems with this vehicle. as a mother with two children who is the primary driver of the vehicle, i am terrified of the potential for a fatal accident to occur. there are numerous web page/blogs where drivers across the country have described these same issues. ford needs to do something.
I bought this car in march 2010. as soon i bought this i heard a sound when i make a turn. it's a sound when two metal make friction. i took the car for services in alberic colon ford in december 2010. first they said that everything was good. after that ask for a supervisor that make a test drive with me he heard the sound and they keep a car for two weeks. after that as soon i took the car out i heard the sound. i didn't take the car back the car for services because i need a car to go to work. in august 2011 i took the car again to the service. again they said that everything was good. i request another test drive with a supervisor and the mechanic they heard the sound and keep the car from september 6 2011 to october 6 2011. when the car was in the services sometime they call me and said that's they are making some test drive to know where it come from the sound. after a month they call me and said that ford said that is something characteristic in this model. you don''t have to be an engineer to know that when to metal make friction one of them going to fail. i hope when this happen i don''t be driving at 65 mph, because i could get kill or kill somebody else. i hope you investigate this complaint and find what's wrong before anybody get kill. this is not normal i been driving for 28 years and i'm a 24 years experience state police here in puerto rico and i know when something go wrong the damage can made. thanks in advance for this matter. *tr
A) 03.15.2010. ford f150 platinum extended cab. steering is extremely stiff/spongy/hard to turn off-center. must constantly fight side winds and road crowns. as if only 10% power assisted. dangerous as required constant attention to steering. others who have driven it comment the same and will not drive truck again. dealer claims it's "normal" for all ford f150's with no correction. dangerous as when transferring to other vehicles with full power assist, one over-steers and quickness and is difficult to re-acquaint. b) drive line/transmission/etc. does not engage on inclines, slips & chatters into "full" engagement, shudders 1-3 times at stopping & starting. ford dealer cannot locate problem...no repair attempted. independent trans. repair firm says it's a drive line bind releasing...possibly a drive line miss-alignment at transmission out-put shaft spline, and or loose engine/transmission mounts. danger that transmission may disengage without warning at any time. *tr
