Tl*the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. the contact stated that when the rear window heater was turned on, the window shattered completely. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 99,100.

After turning on rear defroster on a 15 degree day i heard some electrical snapping and popping sounds. i turned off the rear defroster for a few minutes then back on again. not long after that i heard a very loud bang which was my right side rear window shattering. it stayed in place but was completely spider webbed with a few small missing pieces. *tr

The ambient temperature was approximately -10 degrees fahrenheit. i went to warm up my truck and turned on the rear window defroster. when i returned to my vehicle to drive to work i found that my rear window on the passenger side had shattered. i inspected the window for signs of vandalism but besides the spidering of the tempered glass there was no sign of any impact. after an extremely short google search i found this is one of the most common problems with the 2010 f-150. the complaints about this problem are so abundant it's become comical. which is not a good thing ford... you shouldn't be content with your product being a punchline. *tr

Driving my son to school on a cold morning with the rear defroster on. about 10 minutes into our drive we heard a very loud pop and my son noticed that the window behind his head had shattered. after researching this issue it seems to be fairly common among this year model with people describing the exact situations. called ford and they refused to do anything about it. absurd that this defect and the related costs should be passed on to the consumer when it is an obvious issue with the truck.

On the morning of 12/29/14, he had a heavy frost so i used my rear window defrost on my drive to work. drive was approx. 10 minutes. when i got out of the truck at work, all glass was ok. when i got back in truck to leave work, i looked in rear view mirror, i saw that the passenger side of the three piece rear window was shattered. the glass stayed in the frame and did not fall out. i had to spend over an hour on the phone with my insurance company just to file a claim, and it took the glass company two tries to install the new rear window and rewire it to make it work again. ford knows there is a problem because they have changed the design on the window along with the wiring to the window. why will ford not step up and at least admit there is a problem with the rear defrost and offer to fix it.

I left for work in the morning and i turned on the rear defrost because we had a heavy frost overnight. window was fine when i got out of truck at work. it was a 10 minute drive to work. when i got back into truck 10 hours later to leave work, i saw that the passenger side of the three piece rear window was broken. the glass did not fall out of the frame so it was not from an impact. air temp stayed just below freezing all day. had to spend roughly an hour on the phone with my insurance company and my ford dealer to get the part ordered. it will be four days till it will be fixed. i just hope nothing happens that will cause the glass to fall out of the frame. i drive my truck at least 6 days a week so i cannot be without it. please do something about this issue. *js

Rear defroster was on for approximately 15 minutes. after pulling into driveway and stopping rear passenger reported a funny smell. after turning off the vehicle and while stepping out the rear light on passenger side(which has defrost wires running through it) shattered with a loud pop. the glass remained in place but has spiderwebs throughout the whole light. *tr

I remotely started my f150 to warm up the vehicle on a morning that the outside temperature was 37f. while inside the vehicle i heard a load bang that sounded like glass breaking. observed that rear passenger window shattered approx. three minutes after rear defroster switch was turned on . inspected glass both inside and out and observed that the glass was intact but the whole passenger side back glass what shattered as with safety glass would. i took the vehicle to the nearest dealer and they had seen the problem before but there advised it would not be under warranty or policy. dealer gave me local csr to contact to discuss the issue and ask for policy. glass estimate was around $621 for parts and 3 hrs of labor. declined repair until speaking with csr to ask for consideration under policy. i don't know what i would have done if the glass would have fallen out during driver. numerous incidences report of this exact mode of failure. severe safety issue that needs to be addressed with ford by nhtsa. *tr

While driving, the vehicle lost power completely so power steering was non-functional. was able, with much difficulty, to guide the vehicle off of busy road and on to side street. darn lucky i wasn't involved in accident. had vehicle towed to crossroads ford in cary, n.c. here is word for word what the mechanic wrote. "vehicle towed in. customer states vehicle turns over but won't start. check and advise. "could not duplicate concern. ran oasis. no codes. read past hotline reports for bad pin fit for fuse 27 in under hood fuse panel. tried to relocate to different location. wire terminal damaged during removal. installed inline fuse holder to fuel pump wire. installed 20 amp fuse. test drove and no problems at this time." so basically, this was a flaw in manufacture regarding pin fit for fuse 27 that caused vehicle to cease power while driving and endangered passengers. i called ford service at 800-392-3673 and case was opened. case # [xxx]. customer service rep at crossroads ford was [xxx] and mechanic was [xxx] . i spoke with service manager [xxx] and he was made aware of situation and i'm waiting for his reply as to if there will be compensation. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Initiated rear window defrost; abnormally loud "pop" from exploding passenger side rear-window glass. *tr

Approximately 2-3 minutes after turning on my rear defroster, the passenger side panel of the three panel rear glass shattered. nothing struck the glass to cause this. temperature outside was around 36* f, windows were slightly foggy, not covered in frost. *tr

While driving into work, had the rear defrost active for roughly 10 minutes. at a stoplight, noticed smoke rising from outside of the rear window. as i proceeded to pull off the road, heard a loud bang and the passenger side rear window proceeded to spiderweb. the gasket for the rear window has been burned on the lower left hand corner (when observed from outside of the vehicle). it is apparent there is an issue with the rear heating element, as observed by the number of identical complaints on this site. i hope that ford steps up and does something about this before someone actually gets hurt. *tr

Rear window defroster caught on fire and shattered rear window glass. this could be dangerous and should be recalled.

Contacted ford first about rh rear defroster not working. luckily only had the burnt smell and not the explosion of glass. being this is the highest number of complaints on this site ford should really consider looking into this before possibly a child in a car seat gets a face full of glass. as usuall from ford i received the usual form letter back about not being under any recalls. vehicle only has 32,400 miles on it. would like to know the actual manufacture ford buys these from. even offered if they were to send me a rear unit i would replace it myself as being a auto tech all my life and send the old unit back for verification. *tr

Used rear defrost (approximately 63 degrees outside) drove approximately 5 miles and passenger rear window shattered. was sitting at a complete stop at a light. sounded like a gun-shot. researched the issue to find many other 2010 f150 owners with the same problem who were told it was a short in the rear defrost electrical. ford will not cover repairs. *tr

Parked truck in a lot. left the truck and was fine at the time. i have heard of the rear windows shattering before so i'm always looking at it. get back to the truck and the window was shattered. checked security footage at the lot and could not see anyone throw or hit it with anything. not near a main road either. rear driver side window with defroster (broken side), motorized center window. *tr

2010 ford f150 . the rear right door ajar indicator will not turn off. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. the contact stated that the tire pressure warning light illuminated. in addition, all of the electronics failed to operate in the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing, who stated that a high radio frequency had caused the electronics to fail in the vehicle. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

When i try to start my car all of the warning lights and theft lights flash and the vehicle won't turn. if i leave it for some time and come back and try it, sometimes it will work. when it does work it's only briefly, the a/c goes out but still blows air, the instruments including speedometer go to zero even when i'm on the highway. this is a huge issue due to safety and reliability. i've taken it to a ford dealership, they held it for two weeks and gave it back to me saying it was working fine. on my way back from the dealership, the same thing happened again. this has been a huge hassle and i've had to miss work because of it. *tr

Was driving approximately 30 mph turned on the rear defrost approximately 3-5minutes later rear passenger window shattered. nothing hit the window it appears to be related to the rear defroster. *js

Turned on the rear window defrost and a few minutes later the right-rear window (of the three piece power sliding rear window) exploded. *tr

Turned defrost on rear power slider window and heard a loud explosion like a gunshot and the rear window on passenger side shattered. there are small pieces of glass in the bed of the truck and on the back seat. temperatures were in the mild 30s at the time. this was a problem with the defrost causing the glass to shatter. ford will not cover repairs or replacement of the glass. mileage less than 30,000 miles. truck also covered under extended maintenance plan but ford will not cover it there either. *tr

I was driving home 3/29/2014. it was late afternoon, raining and about 45f. i had my rear defroster on for about 10 mins when the rear window exploded. it sounded like a gunshot so the first thing i did was test my brakes to make sure i could stop, then scanned the dash and no weird lights. it was when i looked in my rear view seconds later that i saw my passenger side rear window (sliding rear window with 3 sections) was shattered. *tr

The rear window defroster on my power sliding rear window caused the driver side rear window glass to shatter while the vehicle was warming up in my driveway. the defroster had been in operation only 2-3 minutes when a loud bang was heard while i was re-entering the vehicle. i looked for impact damage to the roof, tailgate, etc but nothing seemed unusual, and there were no other people in the vicinity. the damage was not readily visible until i returned to the vehicle in the afternoon, got in, and looked in the rear view mirror time: 4:30am weather conditions: 28 degrees, clear sky, light frost on windows, no precipitation in prior 48 hours. an auto glass installer and a body shop owner both confirmed no sign of any impact damage. a brief internet search of ford owner's forums revealed multiple owners experiencing shattered glass, melted window frames etc. when using the rear defroster on 2010 f-150 trucks with power sliding rear window. at lease four of these incidents have taken place in the past three months. (jan-mar. 2014). *tr

On 3-12-14 i left work and headed home, approximately 5 minutes after leaving, i hear a very loud bang toward the rear of my truck, similar to a gunshot. when i got home, 10 minutes later to inspect, i noticed that the entire back passenger section of my window had shattered. i assumed something must have hit my truck, but i didn't understand how that would happen seeing as i was moving forward. if something would have flown up from another vehicle, it would have hit the back of my truck which highly unlikely. one week later i had the window replaced and the technician informed me that this was the 37th rear window he has replaced since december of 2013 and that it is a electrical issue that is causing the windows to literally explode. after receiving this information i did some research online and came across f150forum.com where i learned that this problem is happening over and over again going back to as far as 2011. i contacted ford and filed a complaint ( case# 4161127-c1j5t0). i also contacted "crystal' from ford's social media dept who has been monitoring the forum. she was requesting vin numbers of vehicles this has happened to. she ultimately told me that there was nothing she can do because i had already had a case number with ford customer service. i have had to pay $500 to cover the replacement. *tr

My seat heater stopped working several months ago, i went to replace it today and found that the heat element had melted and turned black the seat cushion in the area of where it melted, i don't believe that there was actual fire but had the power not shut off i am sure that the seat would have caught fire. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. while driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the main harness cable connection to the fuse box overheated and malfunctioned. the harness was replaced, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was not available.

I allowed my car to warm up. it was approximately 28 degrees outside. i began to drive my car. i engaged the rear defroster. within 60 seconds i heard a loud bang, similar to a gun shot. along with a smell of smoke. then glass went flying towards the front of vehicle. after looking around i noticed the rear window was shattered. the rear window consists of three pieces of glass. only the passenger (far right side) was shattered. luckily, there was no people sitting in the back seat at the time. took it to the ford dealership, they said the ford company has not addressed the issue. i was told numerous f150's have had similar problems. ford refuses to cover repairs.

While driving to work last friday morning, my rear glass exploded from what looks like a faulty defroster. the electrical wiring was charred and looked melted. i thought that my vehicle had been struck by something. ford refuses to acknowledge that there seems to be a problem with this part. i'm just glad that my children were not in the backseat area when this occurred. *tr

At about 4:50 am on 2/4/14 i was driving about 20 mph in 9 degree f temperatures with the rear defrost on for about 8 min. i heard a loud pop like someone threw a rock at my truck. as i was backing into a garage to investigate the mysterious noise, i noticed the passenger side rear glass panel was completely shattered. after researching the issue i can safely say this is a manufacturing defect with the glass and rear defrost. *tr

I was driving on a major state route on my way to work and turned on the rear defroster. i smelled something hot and then a loud popping noise. when i looked in my rear view mirror the rear window had shattered. contacted ford dealer and they said the vehicle was out of warranty 3 months and there was nothing they could do. i asked the dealership to contact ford to see if there were similar instances of this happening. they did not but gave me the phone number for the ford complaint office. i researched online and it seems that this has happened multiple times with this model of truck. because the highway i drive is a major truck route it could have been very dangerous not being able to see out the rear window. *tr

My f150 has a three piece rear window with the defogger.while driving i turned on the defogger. minutes later the passenger side rear stationary window shattered. after researching the internet i found out this is a common problem with this model. i feel ford needs to address this problem by recalling and repairing the electrical system that is causing this failure. excessive heat could cause a fire. the burden should not be on the insurance company and individual owner to bear the cost. *tr

2010 ford f150 supercrew power rear sliding window pass side only, cracking upon turning on rear defroster after a few minutes. temperature 15 degrees within a few minutes of leaving a store parking lot and now driving down the highway a few miles i heard a loud bang ( many others posted say it sounds like a 22 caliber shot gun ) i looked around and saw the rear pass sliding window shattered but still intact. this is the first time i had to use the rear defroster as it was snowing sleeting outside. i have had this truck for 2 years and never had to use it. now when i get home i decide to google search this and couldn't believe how common this is. turn out there is a problem and ford will not make it right unless you are very lucky and persistent. the heating element gets so hot that it shatters the glass. they claim glass is not covered. its not the glass, its the heating element. i called 3 local dealers today and 2 of the three said they knew about this but ford wont offer compensation. i was told to call the insurance and file a claim. i also called ford customer care center and told them what i had learned and it was all over the ford forums and the internet. same scenario for all of us. i am just glad that i didn't have a child in the rear pass seat and had this happen or had the glass shatter all over the child. so now i have to pay a $500.00 deductible and file a claim with my insurance carrier. worse yet i was told today that no windows were available for 10 days. hmm makes you wonder why? *tr

Started the car in the morning. turned on the rear defroster. began to shovel the driveway and heard a loud pop from the truck. didn't notice anything until i got in to back up and saw the rear passenger window gad shattered. ford dealer was very familiar with the "window" problem, as they described it. said that because the vehicle was past 50,000 miles that it was no longer under warranty. i rarely use the rear defroster. the dealer said i should take it to the local glass specialist to have it replaced. they never mentioned that it may be an electrical problem. it seems to me that a known repetitive problem should be paid for by ford. if it is an electrical problem, i may be replacing my window more than once. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. the contacted stated that while driving 25 mph with the air conditioner on activated, the front passenger side vent began dispersing heat. the failure recurred twice. the contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired for the related failure eight months prior but the repairs were unknown. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

On a 40 degree morning, i turned the rear defroster on to clear windows and mirrors. as i was driving my son to daycare i heard a large pop then smelled burning rubber. looked and seen the right rear glass shattered and was it shorted out on the heating element. took the truck to ford and since it is off warranty they told me there s nothing they can do besides charging me $1200 for replacement, very disappointed with ford. if i wanted electrical troubles i would have bought a 1990's dodge! thanks for nothing. *tr

Truck was outside at 11 degrees f. started vehicle and turned on the rear defrost. within 2 to 3 minutes the left panel(drivers side) of the 3 piece sliding rear window shattered, while stopped at a traffic light. *tr

External temperature was ~22degrees f, had rear window defroster and heated driver seat turned on. front defroster was on and set to highest temperature. while driving at 25 mph, my son and i noticed a burning smell. he was seated in a booster, rear seat, passenger side. he advised that he could hear something behind him making noise. i looked back and observed smoke coming from behind the rear passenger headrest, where my son was seated. i looked forward to find a spot to pull over and then heard a loud bang. looking back i saw the rear window was shattered on the passenger side. it is a sliding rear window with three sections, only the passenger section, directly behind my son was shattered. the glass remained in place, but shattered. i quickly pulled over, shut off the truck and removed my son. from the outside i can see the plastic lower corner melted where the passenger glass meets the center glass section. the rubber seal/molding was smoking and had melted and dripped down the back of the truck cab, between the cab and the truck bed/box. inside there is a strong odor of burnt rubber or plastic. *tr

i was leaving from work. i put my rear defroster on my rear sliding window. i heard a loud pop. i looked at the rear window when i arrived home. the passenger side rear sliding window was spider cracked all over. i can't believe there is no recall on this yet. its pretty sad when you buy a fully loaded truck that costs over fifty grand, but you cant use the rear defrost because they malfunction. it's pretty obvious this is a problem...just do a search on the internet. *tr

Warmed up car before church. turned on front and rear defroster. backed up, put it in drive and heard what sounded like something crashing into my roof or a gunshot. i stopped and inspected the steel body parts and could find nothing. driving down the road i noticed in my rearview mirror that my right side of my sliding rear window had shattered. it remained in place. i took this into the dealer on monday and they fixed it saying a reed switch had malfunctioned allowing the glass to get too hot and shattering. *tr

Turned on rear defroster of power sliding rear window, right side passenger section cracked into pieces. no there was no hair line crack no impact to this window. looked at the lower heat strip in the bottom left side of this panel and sure enough there are burn marks. now the back defroster does not work at all. did ford stand behind their product. absolutely not !! this is my 2nd ford truck and as soon as i get rid of this one we will being going gm. thank goodness this is shatter proof glass and was not blown out because my daughter was in her car seat right under this. *tr

I got in the truck this morning and left the house, turned on rear defroster, and about 3 minutes later i heard a loud "pop"! i stopped and looked around but didn't find any since it was still dark out but once the sun came out i saw my rear passenger window, right above my daughter's child seat was shattered. luckily she was not in there. i have spoke with dealership and they have denied any knowledge of this happening, but a simple search here and on the ford forums show plenty of consumers having this problem. this should be a recall! *tr

It was frosty out and i turned on the rear defrost. a few blocks down the road, i heard a pop and my back window broke. i have the electronic sliding rear window. *tr

While i was driving i turned my rear defroster on and about 5 min later i heard a load bang, looked around to see what it was and saw the passenger portion of the rear window was completely shattered. there was no impact on the window are clue to why it shattered. so i looked online and found this to be a common issue with the 2010 f150 trucks with power rear sliders. my daughter's car seat is directly under that window! ford denied any knowledge of this issue and insisted they were not responsible and wouldn't cover repairs. i then learned that ford has changed the wiring design for this window, a design that keeps electrical surges from over heating the defroster. my concern is that a shattering window poses a huge safety issue and ford should be held accountable for their failure to keep their customers and more importantly the children of those customers safe! *tr

I turned on my rear window defrost, i after a few minutes i heard a sizzling and the passenger side rear window had shattered. *tr

This morning i switched on my rear defroster. outside temperature was around 50 degrees. with a few minutes i heard a loud pop. inspecting the glass of the vehicle i found the driver's side rear window broken (spider webbed). the dealer is telling me that glass is not covered under the extended warranty. *tr

Vehicle stalled as if out of fuel, despite having been recently filled with gas. fuel monitoring system (tank level gage and range computer) indicated that vehicle was using fuel at much higher rate than normal. for example, normal range of this truck when 36 gallon tank is full is approximately 570 miles. after 250 miles, gauge was showing tank out of fuel and range computer was instructing me to refuel. refilling only required 15 gallons, indicating reduced tank storage capacity. after performing research via internet, suspected bent fuel pump mount due to failed tank purge valve. brought vehicle to dealer for service who found stored p-1450 code which indicated a prior failure of the fuel vent purge valve. dealer dropped the tank, removed the fuel pump assembly and verified that the mounting system for the pump assembly had been severely bent when tank collapsed under atmospheric pressure. negative gage pressure inside of tank caused plastic fuel tank to collapse, severely bending fuel pump mounting hardware which is constructed of two 3/16" diameter steel rods. apparently the purge valve failed and either there is no pressure relief system, or it failed. dealer replaced pump and purge solenoid valve at owner cost of $950+. dealer indicated that there was no liability from either dealer or manufacturer. my concerns is simple....how can the design of the fuel system allow the tank to collapse at all? my case resulted in pump hardware damage, but it seem very plausible that fuel tank damage or failure is very possible, potentially leading to spilled fuel and fire. *jb

On a ~50 degree morning, i turned on my rear defrost when my rear window (passenger side) shattered about 5 minutes after i turned it on. this is a 3 piece window as the middle is a slider on the pickup, only the passenger side broke. i was driving with no other cars around as there must be a short or faulty wiring in the rear defrost. this was not covered under warranty by ford and seems to be a common problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150 crew cab. the contact stated when the review defroster was activated the rear passenger side window exploded. the tempered glass shattered but did not fall into the cabin. in addition, a burning odor and smoke emitted from the rear window seal without flames being visible. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for a diagnosis. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and they stated that the defect was not covered in the service warranty. the approximate failure mileage was 45,800.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. the contact stated that the instrument panel lighting and gauges would not illuminate or operate properly. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 15,600. *tr
