Michelin ltx at2 tires. excessive cracking. tires with 30,000 miles on them and well over one-half tread remaining have developed widespread sidewall cracks. cracks are more than cosmetic, you can actually feel raised bumps if you run your hand over them. the cracks seem severe enough that i am concerned about tire failures, particularly at highway speeds. internet search shows many similar complaints, and evidence that michelin has been quietly offering discounted replacements to those who complain directly to them. i recently filed a complaint on their website but have not heard back. this problem is widespread enough that a more formal program on michelin's part seems warranted. *tr

This is the second cooper discoverer h/t de-treading incident in several months. in both cases, tire pressures were inflated per specification prior to an extended trip and failed after less than 200 miles of sustained highway driving. all tires were inspected prior to the trip and no road hazards were cause of the tires de-treading. the first incident in october on highway 10 west was reported to nthsb. this second incident occurred on february 9, 2012 while traveling at a speed of 70 mph on highway 10 east, approximately 130 miles from lake havasu city, arizona. on both occasions, the tires held pressure while the treads sheared from the tire. both defective tires maintained the correct pressure after testing. it is also noted that the vehicle has never towed a trailer. the vehicle sustained severe damage in both incidents, with the first occurrence forcing the truck off the roadway and into a near fatal situation. *tr

I bought truck in aug 2008 with vibration in steering wheel and the tires were cupped. i replaced the struts, shocks and tires and an alignment was done at that time. the vibration continued, so all the rotors and brakes pads were replaced and the parking brakes adjusted. the truck still shakes violently as if tires are out of balance or about to fall off the truck. i have not found a solution other than to stop driving the vehicle and waiting for 15 minutes before driving again (i do not know if this helps, but feel better doing so). as of the last occurrence (not towing anything), i noticed the shaking begin before a fuel fill-up and then stop after the fill-up. i will note the vibration occurred at the 3/4 fill mark and continued until the 1/2 fuel fill mark was reached. i was able to drive for the next 1/4 tank of fuel with no incidence. the violent vibration returned at the 3/4 tank mark and ceased upon reaching the 1/2 tank fill mark . the vibration stopped for the next 1/4 tank and only marginally returned upon reaching the final 1/4 fuel fill mark. *tr

2005 f150 with 38,000 miles, developed a wobble when driving at any speed.replaced both lower front ball joints.after changing the ball joints out i rotated the tires, and the wobbling became worse not better.i inspected the tire that was originally on the back left side of the truck, and i found a raised spot approximately 10" long and 2 to 3 " wide on the iside of the tire tread.the tread in this spot was worn down past the tread wear bars, and the rest of the tread on the tire was still in a good enough state that i should have gotten another 10,000 miles out of it.i took the truck to local tire dealer and they ispected the rest of the tires and foun 2 more worn exactly the same.ireplaced all 4 tires with another brand. *tr

2005 ford f-150 with ameritac tr owl tires has a disintegrating sidewall. customer states tire manufacturer referred to the problem as run flat which caused the tire to fail. *kb inspection of the tire prior to sending it to the manufacturer showed that there was no indications of punctures or holes in the tire tread over the range of the tread pattern including the remainder of the intact sidewall. the tire bead was intact and not damaged on both the inner and outer sidewalls, although the outer sidewalls had disintegrated and mostly missing. there was no indication of a long term wear pattern due to under inflation. examination of the tire after the failure showed the outer sidewall reinforcing piles were missing and the tire failure was potentially the result of a defect in the tire. *jb
General ameritrac tr tires, size p255/70/17. i had to replace all 4 original equipment tires on my 05 ford f-150 4x4 after only 22,000 miles because the tread was separating from the tires to the point you could see the steel belts. before that i had numerous punctures and repairs from things as light as a stick. i had nothing but troubles from these tires since day one and can't figure out why ford would put such a poor quality tires on there vehicles. i believe both general tire and ford owe me some kind of reimbursement for my trouble, time, and new tires. i was told by the ford dealer that replaced them that general tire would not honor any type warranty on these tires. *tr

I have a 2005 ford f150 leased in july of 2005. i have experienced two incidences where a tire has gone flat in a matter of seconds while highway driving at speeds near 60 mph. i was able to avoid an accident in each case but this could have gone terribly wrong if i was not able to control the vehicle to pull off to the side of the road as it was difficult to control or to keep in my lane. the second incident occurred on july 17, 2006. while driving at highway speed, near 65 mph, my right rear tire went flat within 5 seconds. i had a difficult time trying to steer the truck and nearly collided with the vehicle next to me. i removed the wheel from the truck and took it to a local ford dealer. the tire technician inspected the wheel and told me the valve stem was leaking; no hole or puncture in the tire could be found. they removed the tire from the rim and inspected the tire to find damage in the inner wall of the tire. i requested that the tire, valve stem, and labor be covered under warranty. the service representative told me that he did not think it was their fault. he stated that i would have to buy a new tire and they would replace the valve stem. i argued that i had nothing to do with the failure of the tire and i believed it should be covered under warranty. i explained that i though ford has a safety issue with the valve stems and he continued to tell me i must have hit a pot hole or something. i was very upset that he was entirely avoiding the issue at hand and blaming me for what appears to be a manufacturer's defect. *jb
Dt*: the contact stated there is a vibration while driving at speeds above 65 mph. the vehicle was taken to the dealership and the driver side front and rear tires were replaced which corrected the problem for a short period of time. the vibration recurred therefore, the vehicle was returned to the dealership and the tires were aligned. however, the problem persisted resulting in the contact not exceeding 60 mph while driving. the tire manufacturer is bf goodrich rugged trail (ta). the tire line is p275/65r18. the dot number is apu9au610905. *ak updated 07/05/06. *jb
Excessive tire wear on all four tires in a 9 month time span. had dealership look at the truck and was told that the alignment was off and it wasn't up to them to take care of the alignment but was told to contact tire manufacturer. while talking to the manufacturer rep on the phone she advised that she had read memos from ford about problems with the alignment specs on the vehicle. ford continues to refuse any kind of warranty work. *jb
Dt: contact stated while traveling at 35 mph the tire came off the rim. he lost control of the vehicle, causing the vehicle to veer into on coming traffic, and colliding with four other vehicles. there was no warning prior to the accident. the vehicle was towed to a dealership. the vehicle was totaled. the manufacturer has not been contacted to determine what might have caused the problem. injuries were reported. *ak
My paint job was defective and thin, my windshield was not sealed properly, there are ticking noises from under the dashboard, the front end is too heavy for the added weight to the truck, the transmission stalls the truck when it rolls backwards in drive, the truck shakes at high speeds and has excessive tire wear, which is the only thing that ford has all but admitted to by extending the excessive tire wear/ride harshness warranty from 1yr/12,000 miles to 3yrs/36,000 miles. have you ever heard of a car company giving away something unless there was a serious problem with this vehicle. *nm
Dt: 2005 ford f150. the contact stated the vehicle has a spare tire which it is the same size as the other tires that are not available. the rim will not fit under the vehicle without the tire on it. the contact was not able to replace the tire because it was on back order. the dealership stated they were not aware when the tire will be available for replacement. this is a n original hankook tire, p235/70r17.. the hankook dealer could not replace the tire either. ford stated it was a new size tire with a new manufacturer.*ak
Dt: consumer complained that jack that came with vehicle does not extend high enough so that he can change a flat. the flat tire will come off, but the replacement tire that is inflated will not go on with the jack fully extended. consumer had a flat on vehicle at on august 4, 2005 around 1:00 am. consumer had to call for help. he was stranded due to improper jack. he was unable to change the tire. tow truck driver t came to the scene used his jack to lift vehicle, and tow truck drivers jack was also too short. he had to use a 4x4 piece of wood under jack to change flat. consumer believed that jack was probably made for a 15 inch tire. this vehicle had 17 inch tires. when changing the flat with the jack supplied with vehicle it fell off of the jack.*ak updated 1/4/2006 - *nm
Dt: the contact owns a 2005 ford f150. he purchased the vehicle three weeks ago. the vehicle only had 1800 miles, and it shook badly. he took the vehicle to the dealership, and they said it looked as if chunks had been cut out of the tires. it was the coal mines, where consumer worked, that was the cause of the cuts in the tires. consumer denied it, claiming he did not work in the coal mines, and driveway was gravel and should not have caused the cuts in the tires. two or three of the tires had cuts. *ak
Tires are not wearing correctly and small pieces are coming loose. ford dealer has not been any help
Dt: at 400 miles the vehicle shook violently when putting pressure on the brakes. this happened on may 18, 2005. contacted the dealer, and then took the vehicle to the dealer, who claimed the rotors were warped from heat. they got permission from ford to put on different rotors. after leaving the dealer the brake light came on. the consumer went back to the dealer. they checked and discovered there was no brake fluid in the master cylinder. left the dealer again , went to apply the brakes and there was no brake fluid in master cylinder, the fluid was in the rims of the vehicle, and on the ground. this wore out the tires and the brakes still were not working properly. ford was suppose to send a representative to meet with the consumer , and had not done so. currently, the consumer went to a different dealer , and they just swapped the tires from the front to the back. then , they changed/ turn ed the rotors. the consumer spoke with manufacturer , who blamed the dealer, but the dealer blamed the manufacturer. *ak
Dt: contact had a problem with the tires on new 2005 ford f150. he has had to have the tires rebalanced every 100-200 miles .the dealer replaced 3 of the tires because they could not get them to balance within the limits. the first tire was replaced at 56 miles. now the left front tire has a hunk of tread out of the tire. they were saying vehicle hit something to cause this, but vehicle has not hit anything, and that the tire was a road hazard . also, it was not covered under the warranty. there was vibration in steering wheel while driving 50-60 mph. they put a stabilizer on the left rear in the frame to try and correct the problem, but the tires still were unbalanced. *ak
