We have classified the 47 complaints from 2004 Ford F-150 about VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL into the following categories.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 ford f-150. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled and the accelerator pedal hesitated when depressed. as a result, the vehicle made an abnormal puttering sound while in drive. in addition, the electrical system failed. the spark plugs were changed multiple times. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the spark plugs should not be touched because they were ford certified spark plugs and tear easily. a special onsite ford mechanic repaired the spark plugs. the accelerator pedal and stalling failures were not repaired. the manufacturer and dealer were not made aware of the failures. the failure mileage was 233,000.
This 2004 ford f 150 that i have driven since new as i am about to merge with traffic to get on the xway began to rev up engine . i remove my foot away from the gas to see that the %$#&* is going on. pat the gas thinking " stuck" still reving up now i am over 60. i use my heels to see if mat or some object may have fall down. no ! i pull over in between some yellow cone ..with all the strength i could put on brakes. with foot still on brake and engine rpm in red i am thinking " what the next thing to do " this truck is not coming down to idling . come to me " fool put in neutral ". i did . still rpm in red. i am thinking " turn off ignition" . but at he same time thinking can you . it worked. i placed the truck in park then cranked up and drove of but i can not wait to have this f 150 taken in. i fly a turbo prop and as a student pilot i never wish this on any one in air or on the ground....accident waiting to happen !! i am thinking back several decades ago such was big in the news. personal with a 1983 380 sl took me through this but the acceleration was much slower but never at such a frighting speed
Think i bought a lemon truck from ford after spending a lot of money to try and keep truck running but after all the time and effort i put into the truck it will only go in reverse and engin sounds rough .
With my foot on the brake, i put the truck in reverse to begin backing out of a driveway. i applied a little gas to slowly backup around the turn in the drive. as i was rolling backwards, i had my foot on the brake because i was navigating past other parked vehicles. as i was clearing one of the vehicles, the truck suddenly jolted backwards hitting a tree. so then, with my foot on the brake, i put the truck in drive so that i could pull forward away from the tree. as i began to press on the gas pedal and the truck instantly thrust forward, hitting another tree, stopping the truck & knocking the tree over. it happened with such power that the wheels spun down into the mulch bed before i was able to brake, put the truck into park and remove the keys to turn it off. while the damage on the back bumper was minimal, the damage to the front of the truck was extensive & the insurance company declared the truck a total loss. there was one other time, while on the local highway at a stoplight, with my foot on the brake, that the truck began to thrust forward on its' own. after it first rocked forward, i pressed the brake all the way to the floor which prevented it from actually moving forward any more. once the light turned green, the truck seemed to return to normal functioning. this incident occurred around the time i was due for a tune-up so i figured it was a fluke and would have been resolved with the tune up.
Most recently,(not including rear end replaced, reverse band on trans replaced, blown spark plug out of engine block) my truck has started to stall out for no reason that i can fathom,1st time was at 65 mph on a major highway, now more recently at lower speeds, coming to a stop at stop signs lights ect , turning street corners at lower speeds, or coming to a stop in my driveway. i see many complaints of this same problem in forums with no cause or repair that seems to be a root cause. please help !

I noticed that the cruise control started shutting off without ever touching the brake pedal or off switch. then sometimes it would work fine for a few minutes then just shut off. when it does that it will not come back on again till the next day. i then checked the console shifter, i was able to shift of park with out pressing the brake pedal and even engine in off position. i am worried that the truck may jump out of park and run off and hit something or someone. *tr
I have a problem it pops up saying transmission fault and i want to fix it so help me please!! *tr
Power loss and surge in flow of traffic at 65mph. sudden stop and loss of power in traffic. traffic had to come to halt around me. i had to stop vehicle and attempt to restart several times to restart. this is a known issue with this year and model of ford and needs to be recalled. i have not had it happen at these speeds and it was terrifying. *tr
I was on the expressway and set my cruise control at 74 mph. when i pressed my brake pedal, the cruise control wouldn't disengage and the brake pedal became hard like a rock. i then pressed the off button to turn the cruise control off but it remained engaged. i pressed harder on the brake and was able to slow down to 65 mph but as soon as i released the brake the vehicle gradually sped up to 74 mph. i exited the freeway and had to put the truck in neutral to stop. when i did this the engine raced to 4500 rpm. i then put the vehicle in park and turned it off. when traffic cleared, i restarted the engine and it raced to 4500 rpm. i put the truck in drive and made a left turn into the center left turn lane and had to put the truck back in neutral while i waited for traffic to clear so i could merge. the engine raced to 4500 rpm. when traffic cleared, i put the truck back in drive and the cruise control finally disengaged. however, at this time i smelled smoke coming from the engine compartment. since the cruise control was disengaged at this time i decided to re-enter the freeway and return home. i haven't tried the cruise control since then but i smelled smoke again this morning when i took it into the dealership. i should note that my vehicle is a 2004 f-150 heritage edition which in essence is identical to the 2003 f-150. the 2003 f-150 was recalled for a problem with the cruise control but according to ford motor the 2004 f-150 heritage wasn't. both the dealership and ford customer service have told me that i must pay for the repair since the vehicle is out of warranty. i think it was just an oversight that the 2004 f-150 heritage wasn't recalled along with the 2003 f-150. this incident could have been much worse than it was. *tr
While attempting to accelerate onto a highway my vehicle sputtered and i was unable to get up to speed in a reasonable amount of time. fortunately i was on a 4 lane highway and the approaching vehicles were able to avoid me by pulling into the passing lane. i brought my vehicle in for service and a corroded fuel pump control module was responsible for the hesitation. according to my mechanic, he categorized the problem as defective design. the module is mounted in a area susceptible to corrosion. this is a relatively easy fix however in my case the spare tire carrier had to cut off to access the module. *tr
At 50,000 miles , and earlier, the engine warning light came on, the truck lost all power, and the power steering failed. upon taking the truck to the dealer, it was determined that the throttle body was defective, and needed replacing. needless to say, i think that this should not have happened at such a low mileage and should be covered under a recall. thanks for allowing me to vent. As i was parking my f150 i put my foot on the brake and the car began to accelerate on its on. i applied full force on the brakes but the truck continued to accelerate. i quickly put the car in park and shut it off so it would not hit the car in front of me. about an hour later i restarted the truck and drove home fine. this also happened once about 3 years ago, as i was approaching a stop sign. the garage found nothing. *tr

I was driving when i heard a loud pop! at that point my driver side window rolled down and couldn't be rolled back up. ford said they would look at it for 200.00 and that was just to look at it. i tore into it myself and found the window regulator to be broken. ford wants to charge me 198.00 for the whole assembly. this i believe to be rediculous. also my passenger side window does not want to role up with the passenger side control so that is inopporative. one more thing my cruise control doesn't work half of the time. my major complaint though is the window regulator as this seems to be a major problem with ford components and even the ford mechanics i talk to say this is a big problem. *tr

I have three ford and hadn't been notice about any recall on my ford f150 2004 and 2007. *tr
Speed control doesn't work. i have heard reports of it being recalled. i also have heard of this causing fires
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 ford f150. the vehicle was parked for 1-2 hours and he noticed the fire under the hood. the fire was extinguished. the dealer towed the vehicle to have an investigator diagnose the failure. the investigator concluded that the cause of the fire was the cruise control. the cruise control has not operated normally in over 1 year. also, the dealer stated that there was a recall on the vehicle. therefore, they werenot liable for damages. the contact stated that hewas the second owner, and never received a recall notice. the current and failure mileage were 137,000. the contact has pictures of the vehicle. it has not been determined if the vehicle could be repaired. there was no mention of a police or fire report. *ak
I was in a bank drive-up driving my daughter''s 2004 ford 150 truck. when i started to leave the truck lurched and the engine went to full speed. i immediately applied the brakes but they did nothing to slow the truck. i was headed straight for the bank where the tellers were, so i turned sharply to the right. the truck kept going at a high rate of speed with me trying to stop it with the brakes. it shot through the parking lot and across a very busy road where a car hit me. the impact of the other car didn''t even phase the truck. it kept going, over the curb across the street, through a burger king parking lot and rammed into metal stairs on the side of a jewelry store where it finally stopped. i hit the staircase at a tremendous rate of speed yet the airbags didn''t deploy. the car that hit me was totaled and the driver went to the hospital. my daughter''s truck was totaled and i had to go to the hospital with injuries that turned out to be bruises all over my body, especially on my legs. the staircase was destroyed and a car nearby had damage. the insurance was not adequate to cover all the damage. the insurance company sent someone out to do an engineering report on the truck but he could not find the cause. that didn''t surprise me as there was little left to inspect. this was definitely a mechanical failure. i did not have my foot on the gas peddle. i was trying to stop the truck with the brakes and steering to avoid people and other obstacles. ford needs to look into this as it is an extremely dangerous flaw or defect. i am going to be responsible for a lot of money to repair the damage that the insurance didn''t pay.
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 ford f-150. on several occasions, when wearing insulated or heavy work boots, the shoe would inadvertently engage the accelerator pedal. he also experienced sudden acceleration when attempting to apply the brakes because the shoe was too big and would also depress the accelerator pedal. the contact stated that the brake and accelerator pedals were too close to one another. the vehicle was not inspected or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the current mileage was approximately 110,000. the failure mileage was approximately 30,000.
Dt*: the contact stated while in the idle position for 30 or more seconds, the vehicle drifted into reverse when the consumer began to accelerate from idle position. there were no warnings prior to the incident. the vehicle was taken to a service dealer who determined that the vehicle was performing normally. however, the central computer needed to be reset. the manufacturer was notified. updated 12/12/2006 - *nm
The 2004 f150 sc has a few problems: first was the water leaking from the third brake light in which i had to apply silicone around the rubber seal of the light...never leaked again. second issue was far more frustrating, when traveling around 40 to 50 mph when deciding to accelerate quickly the truck would act as if it was being starved of fuel. the best way to describe it was by depressing the accelerator and releasing it very quickly. i took it to the wonderful ford dealership, sarcastic, and they told me nothing was wrong, and shop manager told me it was because of cold air intake... finally ,after calling ford customer service and complaining the dealership decided it was my throttle body...naturally all my problems were gone. now, less than a year later the problem arose again and i will post the outcome once known. the third incidence was the front bucket seats, started noticing shredded foam under the front part of the seats, not knowing what it could be i assumed it was excess foam around the seat straps located under each seat, to my surprise a hole appeared on the driver's seat on the front left corner facing the door and again i went to the wonderful dealership and i showed them there was a piece of metal with a sharp barb that was slowly shredding the foam and was the culprit in creating the hole and the shredded foam. caution!!!!!! if your truck has this problem be careful!!! i was getting out of the truck and the metal barb caught my pants and tore a huge hole and gave me a pretty deep cut on the inner thigh. none the less the dealership didn't do anything about it. i finally convinced them to replace the seat with me paying for the replacement cost...but, before i could get the work done the wonderful dealership went out of business and i haven't hit-up the new owners. *ak
1) unknown events leading to failure, normal driving, events happened when i first turned on vehicle and during backing up .2) the engine raced out of control and lurched until ignition key was removed (it grabs the gas pedal from the driver like cruise control does) if someone or something is in vehicle's path it or they will be crashed into. then the vehicle and 8 cylinder runs like its on 4 cyl and the air conditioner doesn't work. 3) taken to ford dealer coastal ford in mobile al,they rebooted computer but would not replace computer board, they said just bring it back for reboot if it happens again, diagnostic did not reveal reason for racing engine they were not concerned that if the events happened again an accident could not be prevented or the truck being destroyed which means it could not be taken back for reboot or how to prevent this event .i wanted them to replace the supposedly defective computer board (in my opinion that's the problem) old part still in vehicle .no damages yet but since i professionally bass fish, i could be run over, the truck might race into the water,or someone else and their equipment could be run over and if backing into the garage with a boat the house and boat could be damaged or if the boat trailer has to be dealt with the person behind the truck could be run over. 2004 f150 extended cab v8 engine truck is the vehicle. 6 events over the last 4 months (it just came out of some of its warranties, ford dealer said the computer was warranted for 8 more years)*jb
Dt: the contact stated while vehicle was idling for 30-45 minutes, it caught on fire. the fire department responded to extinguish the fire and a report was made. the insurance company provided a fire inspector. however, he could not determine exactly where the fire started due to the extensive damage. the fire inspector believed the fire started on the left side of the engine under the hood. the vehicle was totaled. *ak
Dt: 2004 ford f150. the contact stated while sitting in front of house took the vehicle out of park and the engine was racing. the contact had foot on the brake and the vehicle went through a brick wall towards neighbor's house. he missed the house and ended up in a tree. upon impact, the airbags did not deploy. the contact did not know how fast the vehicle was going, but the vehicle kept accelerating. the police came out and a report was taken. the contact's neighbors heard the vehicle and came outside because they thought someone was outside racing. the dealership said they had not heard of this problem. the truck is with the police at this time, the insurance company is going to acquire the vehicle. the vehicle has not yet been inspected to see why this happened. the contact stated his shoulder and neck were hurting. *ak
On 9/28/05 our 2004 f150 ford pick up caught fire as the operator was driving at approximately 10 m.p.h on a dirt road. the fire appeared to start in a location in the engine compartment. the vehicle was totally destroyed by the fire. *jb
2004 ford f150 rear passenger side pulled off the road to the shoulder. *ts the consumer managed to get the truck back on the road, however it immediately went off the road again and the consumer lost control of the vehicle and went across 4 lanes of the street, traveled up an embankment on the opposite side f the street and hit a tree. in addition, the next the consumer's insurance company informed him during the incident he hit another vehicle twice and caused that vehicle to cross all four lanes of the road. *jb
Dt: the vehicle accelerated when pressing on the brakes. contacted the dealer, they did some work to it and said it was a diaphragm, and they fixed it. this worked for a while and then it started doing the same thing again. this was august 1, 2005. noticed it made a groaning sound and shook. they replaced the transfer case, and it hasn't made the sound since then. when standing at stop it surged, gave a little jump/pulsated and touched the brakes. it happened intermittently. *ak *jb
The control buttons on the steering wheel do not perform intended function, or fail entirely. occasionally when the dash lights are lit, the buttons do not light. they may or may not come on later in the drive. the volume + button makes the cd track or radio station skip to the next one, the volume - button makes the volume increase. the mem button does nothing. the cruise control started slipping, as if it "forgot" that it was on. and the truck accellerates, or slows. when the cruise was on yesterday, the "resume" button didn't work, and the "set" button caused the truck to accellerate. frequently, the cruise control simply will not turn on and set at all.
I rented a ford f-150 truck on april 14, 2005. while at a stop sign and my foot on the brake the engine suddenly revved out of control. the rpms went from idle speed to 3000 rpms. all while my foot was on the brake. the truck started to lurch forward until i pressed on the brake as hard as i could. i quickly put the truck back into park, then put it back into drive and the problem stopped. *ak
Consumer's vehicle experienced three instances of spontaneous acceleration. one time it happened while consumer was backing the vehicle out of the garage. consumer turned the key off.*ak vehicle had a 4th acceleration episode while the vehicle was parked. the consumer saw the acceleration on the tachometer. *bf *nm
The vehicle was on the road at 10 mph when all of a sudden the driver noticed black smoke coming out of the engine, blocking his view from the road. the owner got out of the vehicle , and witnessed it burning up. the manufacturer was contacted by consumer. *ak *sc
Driver experienced vibration coming from the accelerator pedal while driving over 25 mph. this caused numbness to the driver's foot. driver took vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that there was a problem, but no solution at this time. *ak
While reversing the rpms raced at a high rate. this caused the vehicle to hit a tree and go into a ditch. consumer sustained minor injuries. dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. *ak
Consumer was pulling inside of the garage and vehicle suddenly accelerated. consumer applied the brakes and pedal went to the floor. then, vehicle crashed into the garage door. upon impact, both frontal air bag did not deploy. no injuries were reported. vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic could not determine the cause of the collision. *ak.....the brakes did not stop vehicle, nd the air bags did not deploy. there were two children, 5 and 7 years in the back seat who could have been seriously hurt. if the vehicle had moved 3 inches to the right consumer would have gone through the garage door, where consumer's husband was working and could have been run over and seriously hurt. this happened again on christmas eve when the vehicle was parked on a city street in midway, ky. it was in park when consumer turned on the ignition and the accelerator went wide open. consumer put foot on the brakes and after a few seconds the accelerator went down to normal. *ak
When the speed control is engaged it works fine on level or climbing highway, but on the downhill side, the speed control does not hold the vehicle to the speed set. the vehicle speed keeps increasing depending on long the downhill section is and the brakes must be applied to slow the vehicle down. it was taken to the dealership at the time it was discovered and i was told there was nothing wrong with it and that i had to take it out of overdrive for the speed control to work properly. however, i tried this and the speed control did the same thing, increased speed on a down grade. on every other vehicle i have ever owned, the speed control, when engaged, controlled the downhill speed to the speed which was set. *tr
