Our 2016 ford explorer sport lost power going up a slight hill right before our house and barely made it home. we immediately called the dealership and arranged to bring it the following morning. the drivetrain is under warranty for 5 years or 60,000 miles. our vehicle is 4 years old with slightly over 60,000 miles and we also purchased the additional warranty for 100,000 miles. we have been told by the dealership that we will be responsible to pay for the labor of a transmission tear down which takes 18 hrs and $2,000 in labor before we can find out if the warranty will cover the issue. we have also had issues with the heated/cooled seats, the air bags, the parking assist, and steering. we did not spend all this money for a newer vehicle(was 2 yrs old when purchased) just to have several issues that will end up costing us a ridiculous amount of money. this is our family vehicle that we drive our 3 kids around in. we spent the extra money to have something reliable and safe that we wouldn't have to sink money into repairs and also purchased the additional warranty to not have to worry about ay repairs. with the amount of money we have spent on the vehicle, we were not expecting a big out of pocket cost, especially since we have the warranty. we are very disappointed in the vehicle and the customer service we have received and will never purchase another ford if this is the reputation they allow themselves to have.
The vehicle began to overheat when driving at an incline. as soon as the vehicle was level there were no overheating issues. i took the vehicle to the dealership and was advised that the vehicle was overheating due to the grill shutters being stuck closed and as a result the transmission was failing and needed a partial rebuild. the vehicle was still eligible for certain repairs under the warranty, mileage 58,120, so ford covered the partial transmission rebuild as they determined was fit. the grill shutters malfunctioning and being stuck closed were not covered under warranty but the malfunction was a major contributing factor to the transmission failure and overheating of the vehicle. repairs were completed in may 2019. in november 2019 and approx. 2k miles out of warranty and just slightly 2k more miles since the transmission rebuild and grill shutter replacement, the vehicle began to overheat again. the overheating would occur consistently when sitting idle or in motion on streets and on highways. the vehicle was taken to the ford dealership again for diagnosis. it was determined that the head gasket was blown which was causing the vehicle to overheat. ford advised that due to the grill shutters being stuck closed that ultimately was the cause of the damage to the engine and the head gasket being blown. the malfunctioning grill shutters are a major issue that should be fixed on fords behalf so that additional engine damage doesn't occur. ford is now not covering the head gasket being blown/overall engine damage even though this was ultimately caused by the malfunctioning grill shutters. the vehicle is not drivable without overheating and the overheating could cause a fire which could be extremely dangerous and in some cases, fatal.
Heading home after work on the turnpike in my ford explorer 2016 with 50,250 miles. approximately two / three weeks ago. out no were felt like a jolting; sudden stalling; sudden deceleration; sudden loss of power without any warning. i pull to the side of the road. put the suv in park. attempted a restart, it work. during this incident, the dashboard was displaying and message "see manuals, with a big wrench". the manuals tells you to take it to a dealer for service. this has continue to happen several times after the incident in the turnpike. i bought this car new, an has always being service in the ford dealer. call the ford dealer an i was informed to make an appointment so they can put the vehicle in the computer to diagnostic. but since the warranty already expired that i may have to pay for the repairs. did some research on th issue, an it seen that this has happen to many owner of a ford explorer 2016. this is a very serious issue that ford needs to correct the problem with a recall.
Ford exploer 2016 at low speed excelarator stick and engine reves up transmission in drive. must put transmission in nutral to stop auto from moving fwd. happened 3 times seperate days. had to put transmission in nutural to get auto under control.
While the vehicle was parked, in a parking lot, turned completely off, and the gear selector was in the "park" position, the vehicle rolled forward (slightly downhill). the vehicle rolled approximately 8 inches until the front tires met with the parking curb. the emergency brake had not been applied at the time. the grade of slope was approximately 3-6degrees. the rear hatch was open, and two adults were sitting in the back with their feet on the ground when the vehicle rolled. it was apparent, that the transmission "slipped", while in park, when it should not "slip".
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford explorer. while driving at 20-25 mph, the vehicle was jerked sporadically. the check engine and ignition warning lights were illuminated. the vehicle was taken to quirk ford (540 southern artery, quincy, ma 02169 (617) 770-0070) where the failure was unable to be duplicated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the transmission needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was contacted who referred contact to nhtsa. the failure mileage was approximately 65,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford explorer. while driving various speeds, the vehicle made a grinding noise. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. the failure mileage was 78,597.
As i was driving my 2016 ford explorer on the highway on 08/01/2019 i experienced the vehicle start to stutter just before i was going on to the on ramp merging on the highway and after i was on the high way the vehicle started smoking from under the hood and would no longer accelerate and i could smell oil burning and pulled over and shut the car off looked under the car and saw the pile of oil underneath but the vehicle did not have the any check engine light or warnings once we towed the vehicle home i looked under the car and saw that the transmission casing was cracked pretty much in half i could actually see the gears inside the casing of the transmission i also rememberd in the past year or so the vehicle would shift very hard after braking and then getting back on the gas it happened every once in a while .
With no warning - experienced sudden loss of power while driving. engine light came on. also the wrench light came on with a message that said "see manual." i was able to get out of traffice and pull over. after ten minutes, i restarted the car. the car started back up with no problem and the engine light was back off. from there it drove beautifully like it never happened - except that it did ! four days later, i take it to the dealorship. they determined that this happened due to a defective throttle body. i have to have it replaced and it's going to cost me $380. i find it hard to believe that with the significant number of complaints on this issue all over the internet that they didn't know about this at the dealorship when they sold me the car. and also that ford has not recalled this yet considering the number of complaints. i have to have this fixed, i have no choice. i would definitly like to reumbersed for this repair. but in addition to the out of pocket cost, the power going out on the car while driving is a major safety issue. with the significant number of complaints on this issue with this specific vehicle model / year , i hope that somebody doesn't have to die before they place a recall on this issue.
Can of vehicle has a propane or natural gas odor in it causing nausea and headaches
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford explorer. while driving approximately 75 mph, the check engine warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle stalled. the contact stated that the vehicle went into limp mode. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who retrieved diagnostic trouble code: p2111 (throttle actuator control system stuck open). the vehicle was not repaired. autonation ford marietta (located at 869 cobb pkwy se, marietta, ga 30060, (770) 674-6077) was infomred of the failure via phone. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 140,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford explorer. the contact took the vehicle to star dodge chrysler jeep ram (5101 s 1st st, abilene, tx 79605, (325) 698-2222) to have the vla emission computer update completed. after a few days, the vehicle began to exhibit a delayed response when the accelerator pedal was depressed. in addition, the vehicle downshifted on its own suddenly, especially while driving uphill. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the vehicle was affected by the vla emission update. after the update, the vehicle tended to overheat and the fuel gauge did not accurately display the correct reading. the vehicle was taken to star dodge a third time where it was diagnosed that the egr was throwing coolant into the turbo. the contact reached out to the manufacturer and was proivdecase number: 407224. the dealer stated that the case would be closed because they could not remedy the failure. prior to updating the vla, the contact was informed by the eco system hotline that the vehicle would not be affected. the failure mileage was 51,000.
Required a new transmission. reported initial problem at 58,000 miles the dealer could not find a problem while car was still under warranty. car was experiencing a hesitation during acceleration. at 80,000 miles the transmission had to be replace (out of warranty). require new battery and cables after batter "exploded" corroding the battery cables. (68,000 miles). required a new water pump at 86,000 miles.
I received a "terrain management fault" alert while driving on a highway, and immediately had a loss of power and very slow acceleration after stopping. upon reaching my home the vehicle would not drive up a small incline in my driveway. the "check engine light" came on and there is now a loud metallic clang when shifting into drive or reverse. the vehicle has only 13, 655 miles on it. i called ford roadside assistance and they will have a tow truck take it to a ford dealer in the morning for testing..
With the cruise control set at ~78 mph on an interstate highway the automatic transmission appeared to shift into a low gear causing the vehicle to suddenly decelerate and the engine to rev to match the set speed. the vehicle decelerated from 78 to about 40 as if i had slammed on the brakes. after stopping and talking with my dealer he recommended to continue as no warning lights or indicators appeared on the car. i continued on the road at a much reduced speed. after a short distance the vehicle again self shifted to a lower gear with the engine rpm's showing approximately 3000 at about 55 mph. dealer is installing a new transmission but can not identify what caused the vehicle to shift gears on its own.
Vehicle steering became stiff while driving in a parking lot, with multiple errors. cannot drive vehicle safely. happened without warning. -hill start assist not available -service advancetrac -terrain management system fault
My vehicle only has a little over 91,000 miles on it. however, for the last 45,000 miles, i have noticed a jerking in the transmission once i reach above 40mph. my mother has a 2017 ford explorer and had the same issues. she had the extended warranty so she was able to have hers fixed but had to pay a deductible. this should not be a warranty fix... this should be a manufacturer fix and recall. my mom was told by the ford dealership that fixed her car that there was a known issue with this problem with dealing with the transmission. she was also told that if the issue is not fixed on your vehicle, it could cause the transmission to go out at any time . this is a serious safety concern,. i have 4 children in my vehicle at all times, two of them being under the age of 3. i do not feel safe in my vehicle and do not feel that ford is doing their job to ensure that recalls are being done properly. i saw 7 recalls for ford explores for year 2016 but when i searched my vin... nothing came up... why is that?
Complete vehicle power failure (loss of steering capabilities, etc)while in motion making left hand turn onto major surface street that connects to freeway entrance.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford explorer. when the vehicle was placed into reverse, it jerked. the vehicle was taken to woody anderson ford (2500 jordan ln nw, huntsville, al 35810, (877) 315-0514) to be diagnosed and repaired per an unknown recall regarding carbon monoxide. prior to taking the vehicle to the dealer, the contact became very sleepy while driving. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 77,000.
Interior of car began to smell of burning oil, warning message "4wd temporarily disabled". leak from vent hose into ptu system. ford (santa rosa, ca) says ptu must be replaced. 37k miles on car.
During acceleration, a brief pause in acceleration or down shifting of gears. feels like the transmission is slipping. usually noticed during 30 minutes of normal driving conditions.
The engine will stall and the car will buck/shake and almost die when put into drive after sitting overnight or for several hours takes 1-2 minutes to jerk/shake and then will run fine. twice the wrench icon has come on in the dash. we have taken it to the dealership 3 times now to be fixed. they were able to validate what happened, as it happened to them but said that the car's computer did not generate any codes so they are unable to diagnose/repair.
I have been driving my vehicle for the last month it has 40000 miles on it and had no problems until the last couple of weeks my vehicle has been jerking when accelerating and the gear drops.
It jolts, lunges, transmission doesn't engage and slams into gear hard it makes you feel you got rear ended with a big bank. slow to accelerate and when it finally does it lunges
When keeping a steady speed, rpms fluctuate up and down causing a jerky movement while driving. happens randomly or after idling for a few minutes. also, power decreases during this event, so when taking off, car doesn't want to accelerate, then lurches forward. also, when accelerating, particularly uphill, a burning smell comes from the vehicle.
Same issue as nhtsa id number: 11042260. at 7,000 miles when the vehicle goes into reverse we hear a loud thumping sound as though you ran over something. this is happens more when reversing with a turn than straight but seldom while backing straight out as well. at 7,500 mile service the issue was bought to the attention of the dealership, the tech determined that it was a faulty rdu (rear drive unit) which was placed on order. the dealer has not yet responded to the status of the part which has been over a month! yet the dealership asked us why we rated the unsatisfactory! at this point it is unknown if this would solved the problem as the replacement part has not yet been installed.
When you drives slowly in between 15mph to 20mph 2nd to 3rd gear shifting it gaves tugg when it was in warrenty i bring to ford delarship but they said everything is ok never recommend ford it was my 1st experience with ford but all crap cars and suvs
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford explorer. while the vehicle was in the drive position, the vehicle stalled, rolled backwards, and crashed into a tree. a police report was not filed and there were no injuries. the vehicle was taken to soo motors (391 3 mile rd, sault ste. marie, mi 49783, (906) 632-2278) for diagnostic testing. the contact was informed that the vehicle performed as intended. the contact was also informed that the vehicle was equipped with hill braking assist. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and opened case number: [xxx]. the approximate failure mileage was 24,000. *tt information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tt
Power train control module and engine control module failed under high speed on a 4 lane road. we were almost killed by being rear-ended traffic as vehicle came to a complete stop, engine off, and completely dead. not able to steer or brake. vehicle has only 12,854 actual miles. please fix this before others are killed and/or maimed.
2016 ford explorer xlt was great until i hit 17,680 miles. transmission went into "limp mode" and would not accelerate. engine/wrench light appeared on the dash and i basically crawled to the dealership. very scary when stopped, put the pedal to floor and would barely move. after a few days at the dealership, they said it appeared to be the clutch and they replaced it. got it back and two days later, it did it again. drove back to dealership and they had it for a day, but couldn't get it to do it, so i got it back. two days later, it happened once again. dealership said if it happened again, drive it right to the dealership and don't turn it off. a tech went for a ride with me and was able to see what was happening. when were driving back, lights on dash went off and the car drove fine. the tech said not to worry, they'd be able to get a code even though the lights on the dash went off. so i'm on my 3rd rental and waiting to hear what will be done. luckily i leased my explorer and everything is covered under warranty. my advice is stay far away from any ford product with this transmission! it's dangerous and completely unreliable.
I was driving on the high way yesterday and the car couldn't be moved with the gas pedal. i coasted to the next exit, turned off the car and back on and it worked again. today the same thing happened, but this time it didn't work again. i had adac (here in germany) come and take a look at it. they reset the "system" and followed me to my ford car garage shop.
While driving the vehicle in heavy traffic on a city street i lost power. the vehicle would not shift into gear. when i parked the vehicle it would not go in reverse. i had to put the vehicle in neutral and get pushed out of the parking lot. the vehicle would not shift into gear to drive home. the vehicle had to be towed to the dealership. the second time this happened i was on a 600+ mile trip out of state. i was driving at high speed on the interstate. i took the vehicle to a dealership when i reached my destination. there service department could not fit me in t look at it. i drove the vehicle directly to the dealership when i returned home. the third and fourth time i was 150 miles from home. i was driving in heavy traffic on a 4 lane highway. the issue also happened when the car was stationary sitting at a stop light then attempted to proceed into traffic. i have had the same issue 4 times without the "nonconformity" being resolved. i have taken it into the dealer 3 times for service. the vehicle has been out of service greater than 15 days. carfax indicate the electric throttle body was repaired a month before i purchased the vehicle. that information was not disclosed to me at the time of purchase by the dealership.
When i place my explorer in reverse to back out of a park, when i am about half way out of the park, there's a loud "bump". i automatically slam on brakes because i think i have ran over someone. recently, i placed my explorer in drive so that i could pull out of the garage and i heard the loud "bump". i have taken my explorer to the dealer several times and they have no idea what it is. i have also contacted ford and they have no idea what it is. ford finally offered a 100k mile warranty but that doesn't solve the problem.
Throttle body has failed twice. first time at 7275 odometer; second occurred at a bit over 16,000 miles. failure of this part results in no throttle response to the engine and a maximum of about 10mph speed. luckily, both times, i was not on the interstate or other high speed highway. both instances were in motion at 35-45 mph. the only way to clear the problem is to shut the engine down and wait for 1-5 minutes; then be prepared for no throttle response within a few miles.
The transmission drain plugs were loose. the vehicle has 5064 miles. i had been noticing an odor and thought i had a coolant leak. but the smell was not "sweet" enough. i crawled under the car after a 700 mile trip because the order was very prevalent. i notice transmission fluid on one of the transmission drain plugs. there was a plume of transmission fluid going from the transmission to the back of the car. some of the fluid had contacted the exhaust components. i check the fluid level ( flat surface, engine hot and running) and the fluid did not even contact the dip stick. i then went to see if the plug(s) was loose. it is a 11mm. i was able to get 2.5 turns on the plug using just my fingers. on the second plug i was able to get 1 full turn with just my fingers. the 1st plug only had about 3 threads engaged. i am concerned that if other vehicles have this condition, a fire or complete lose of transmission fluid could occur. if a plug falls out while traveling at highway speeds a serious accident could occur.
While driving in traffic there was a loud noise and the car lost power and the wrench light came on. was able to roll out of traffic transmission went out. *tr
Electronic throttle body replacement required. i was going 75mpg on a highway in ohio traveling to illinois. 2 of 3 lanes closed. car lost power going from 70-40 in seconds. luckily i was on a downhill and was able drift to the right far enough not to get hit. dangerous. i had gone to ford when i read about the other people with this issue back in august. they would not repair my throttle body unless i paid. "you have to wait until it breaks"
When driving at 65mph on interstate 287 the car did a slight jolt and then lost all power. the engine remained running, power steering and brakes still worked, but there was no acceleration. wrench light and check engine lights came on. luckily i was near an exit so i coasted to a halt off the interstate. i restarted the car, it drove at no more than 5mph to a safer spot. after sometime waiting for a tow truck i restarted the car, it worked this time but with a check engine light. i drove slowly and on county roads, back home. now in dealer to be fixed. i have read multiple examples of this problem on this website and generally. there is a clearly a major safety issue with these engines and it needs addressing at a wider level than simply each consumer. *tr
2016 ford explorer with approximately 9100 miles, i was pulling out onto a highway when the vehicle suddenly stopped in 50mph traffic. the wrench light, engine light, airbag light came on and i had to coast to the shoulder. towed to the dealer where it now sits. saw all of the complaints on carcomplaints.com and here and realized i have to get rid of this vehicle, no confidence in it now.
1st incident june 2016: during a busy school commute. on a very busy road, the vehicle lost power. would not accelerate past approx. 15 mph. towed to dealer and throttle body was replaced. 2nd incident oct. 18,2016: same exact problem as above, also on a busy street. potential for injury or loss of life was great in both of these circumstances. towed to dealer. was told that only the computer needed to be reset and the car is fine??!! i have no confidence in driving this vehicle at all! afraid for my family's safety!! *tr
Electronic throttle recall (16b32)---was driving on the 5 north freeway, and had just merged onto the 55 north when the car lost power. (i pushed the gas, but the car could no longer accelerate)--all power was gone. i was, thankfully, able to move over to the right side of the freeway. i called aaa, and was eventually towed out of there (to ford dealership where i originally purchased the 2016 ford explorer.) ford dealership told me there was "new" recall regarding my vehicle (electronic throttle body repair)---left car on saturday. (said i could not get a rental since it was 2:58pm.) went to get a rental car at dealership today (monday after 2:30pm), but was told the car was ready to go home. i was invoiced at 3:14pm today. please look at page 1 --it says that work: "began:10-1-16 done:10-1-16", cause: recall correction: reprogram pcm"-----)*********technician time spent: 15:23 to 15:43****** did not replace the part ( electronic throttle body repair********this is very dangerous----people can get killed on the freeway by getting hit by other cars (if their car were to suddenly lose power in the passing lane---------or on any lane on the highway for that matter). dealership knows about the recall and they still did not replace the electronic throttle.
I was driving on 675 in dayton ohio at 65-70 miles an hour when my ford explorer xlt lost all acceleration and i was forced to coast to a stop on the left shoulder of the highway. i was able to turn the car off and restart it, and drive it home without incident. i had it towed to a ford dealer and hopefully will have an answer tomorrow. this vehicle is a 2016 xlt with just over 8,000 miles. i no longer trust this vehicle and will be researching more reliable vehicles.
2016 ford explorer [xxx] lost power and would not move in middle of busy highway. vehicle was noted to have a sputtering sound and appeared to be firing on only a few cylinders. turned vehicle engine off and restarted no help vehicle would not move with accelerator pedal in full open (floored) position. after opening hood and disconnecting neg terminal of battery vehicle operated fine for approx 10 miles and then same occurence. again fault cleared and ran fine to nearest ford dealer. initial diagnosis by dealer was codes p2111 and p2112. dealer stated found recall 16b32 followed instructions and reprogrammed pcm and clear codes. customer departed dealership service bay and repeat above mentioned malfunction before off the dealer lot. returned to service bay and dealer stated that throttle body was changed. vehicle appears to be operating normal at this time. this is a safety issue that should be investigated. my wife was driving the vehicle when this first occurred in busy mountain highway here in southern wv and was nearly hit by numerous vehicles before vehicle could be drifted backwards down the mountain where in order to get vehicle off of highway. service adviser indicated that he had seen several similar problems with the 3.5 liter engine in ford explorers. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford explorer. while driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle suddenly failed to accelerate when the accelerator pedal was depressed. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was discovered that a transmission gear had fractured. the cause of the gear failure was not determined. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 12,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford explorer. while driving 55 mph, the vehicle decelerated to a complete stop independently and the wrench warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 11,000.
I was on a trip away from home, coming down a 2 lane country road and my 2016 explorer just began to slow down. i hit the gas, but no reposne from the vechile. i could only throw on my flashers and cringe as the cars piled up behind me, hoping no one would hit me. we coasted at least half a mile before finding a place to safley exit the road. i called roadside assistance and they woud not authorize payment to tow my vechile back home, and i had to wait 45 minutes for assistance to arrive. i am so disappointed and saddened to think what may have happened if i had choose to take the highway instead. i could only clutch the steering wheel as i watched my speedometer drop from 58 to 20 something in a matter of minutes. i had children sitting in the 3rd row and was concerned that someone would run into me due to my sudden decline in speed. i cannot believe that i was not notified that this could happen. why isn't this a recall? i made it safely, but no one should have to sufer injury or loss before ford takes this seriously.
While driving below 30 mph attempted to accelerate and felt a jolt, engine cut off,"wrench" light and air bag light came on (last one probably when the engine shut off).had to coast to the side,re-started engine and it started shaking, rpms kept going up and down between 1-2000.turned off and waited a few minutes.started engine again and it was running normal except check engine was on.went to local ford dealer (we were on vacation) who couldn't take us in for at least 6 hrs and wanted us to pay for diagnostic (new car, just had first oil change).went to auto zone and they read code p2112 -throttle body failure and armed with that scheduled service at my local dealer.on the way back issue repeated itself two more times.all on lower speeds (city driving).current miles 6200.
2016 ford explorer xlt with 11,600 miles. ebt issue? driving to work on a city street going about 35 mph just before 8am on 08/25/2016 and vehicle lost power. vehicle slowed way down and i felt a jerk/lurch. may have been hit from behind but the other vehicle did not stop. engine was still on and the wrench indicator came on and a message appeared "see manual" or "see dealer", i can't remember which.tried accelerating and vehicle would not increase speed. the vehicle moved very slowly, maybe 5mph? luckily i was on an overpass, in the right lane, and going down the overpass to get the vehicle into a hotel driveway that was at the bottom of the overpass. had the vehicle towed to the local ford dealership. waiting to hear back from the dealer. reading other complaints about this same issue and agree this is a serious defect. luckily the traffic was not bad because this could have had a much worse outcome. we purchased this vehicle to haul our young kids and to suddenly lose power without warning is extremely dangerous to my family and other drivers.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford explorer. while driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle lost power and the service "wrench" warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was coasted to the side of the road and was towed to the dealer (northtown ford in menomonie, wi) where the throttle body was replaced. the failure recurred and the same dealer replaced the retaining clip, but the failure recurred. the contact made the manufacturer aware of the failures and requested a buy-back. the contact was informed that the issues did not warrant a buy-back. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 9,000.
Can lurch violently when operating at low speed such as in a parking lot
