Problems with 2016 Ford Explorer POWER TRAIN

On average, the 2016 Ford Explorer starts to “feel” problems with the POWER TRAIN and its various aspects after 26 542 miles.

Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2016 Ford Explorer

I was driving down i-295 with a speed of 65mph when i saw a wrench icon on the dash board light up and i lost control on acceleration. no power even though you are stepping on the gas you slowly decelerate like you placed the car in neutral.the next day i called up the service dept of my dealer. explained to the tech what had happened and without hesitation he replied "you have to change the throttle body, it's defective ."

Bought vehicle 4 months ago. today when pulling into my driveway i stopped and placed my car in park. my car continued to roll despite gearshift being in park. it struck the stone aspect of my house leaving extensive scratches and scrapes over the right front end.

While driving through a major city on the expressway at rush hour, the vehicle suddenly lost power. the dash illuminated a wrench (powertrain fault) and check owners manual. we decelerated in traffic down to about 5 mph. we were extremely fortunate that no one was hurt as we tried to make our way to the right shoulder from the left lane (there was inadequate shoulder on the left when the failure occurred). no question in our mind that this is life threatening! we feel fortunate we were near an exit, so we limped along at 5 mph to a gas station. the vehicle was towed to a dealership and next day verified that the electronic throttle body was defective. the dealer changed this part out and we fortunately have not had a recurrence. mileage at failure was 9456. one would not expect a throttle body to fail, especially at low mileage. we now read that many 2016 explorers have this defect and that other drivers have experienced the same life threatening event that we did.

Lost power while crossing an intersection. was able to glide the car to the side of the road. internet search disclosed that it is a problem with several ford cars and possibly a faulty etb. had it happened on a freeway i would probably be dead. the problem with this defective component has been reported before but so far no recall has been issued. please do something!!!

2016 ford explorer with approximately 8400 miles. was traveling southbound on us hwy 1 at approximately 50mph when vehicle suddenly stops accelerating and wrench light comes on. car will only coast at less than 5mph. was able to pull into a parking lot without being involved in an accident. vehicle was on and shaking but would not allow me to accelerate. vehicle had to be towed to ford dealership. ford mechanic stated it was the electronic throttle bottle and they have already had a few of them come in to be replaced. etb has been replaced but vehicle still lags when accelerating. went on carscomplaints.com and 38 complaints have already been filed for the same issue.

Electronic throttle body issues. while driving vehicle (that has only 8300 miles) the electronic throttle body was defective and put the vehicle into a "limp mode" while driving. while driving 50 mph down a busy local road the wrench safety light came on along with "see manual" on display area. vehicle suddenly would no longer accelerate and idled at less than 5 mph. extremely dangerous while driving down the road and the vehicle just stops accelerating while in traffic. was almost in multiple accidents while trying to coast the vehicle out of the roadway. had to be towed to local dealership. went online and read over 50 reviews of this happening to other people!!

On two separate occasions my 2016 ford explorer sport four-wheel-drive, with approximately 6100 miles, the automatic transmission failed to stay in the park position. on the first occasion in june 2016 the vehicle rolled away after exiting the vehicle at a shopping center parking lot and had to be chased down! thankfully caught up with it and jumped back in before it hit someone or another vehicle! the second occurrence was on august 1, 2016 parked in front of a commercial building and again the vehicle's automatic transmission did not stay in the park position and began to roll away, thankfully this time before exiting the vehicle. initially thought the first time was a fluke but since it has happened twice it is a safety concern that needed to be reported.

2016 ford explorer shuts off while driving. it's a known issue, but the vehicles are still being sold and no recall or systematic way of replacing it. i was on the highway and the vehicle just slowed down to a crawl twice. ford offer no solution. i checked online and this seems to be a problem many people are experiencing. i almost got hit twice trying to get to the shoulder lane.

Throttle body quits working leaving you with no ability to accelerate in traffic. while driving down hwy car suddenly lost ability to accelerate, had to coast until i could find a place to pull safely out of traffic, very scary.

Driving down road and explorer started losing power, cutting out and engine almost died. the check engine light and tool light came on display. i was barely a few hundred feet from my house, so i slowly managed to get vehicle to my driveway. my husband attempted to drive explorer in subdivision again and explorer again started misfiring and engine died. turned air conditioner off and it restarted and appeared to shake explorer as engine misfired and we barely got it back in our driveway. it only has 7,740 miles on it!! i called dealership and had it towed to there today.

New 2016 ford explorer xlt, 6000 miles, without warning looses power, car stays running, but acts like in neutral. engine light and air bag light come on, says to call dealer, emergency. this happened on highway 285, 10 lanes of very fast moving traffic, with my wife and child in the car, very dangerous we were almost was stuck in middle lane as the car glided to a stop. have seen hundreds of reports on the internet about this same problem. ford dealer was aware of the issue, replaced throttle body, this part is defective and the issue is well documented on the internet. they replaced the part at no cost, but i have no confidence they actually know the issue or if this will happen over and over. based on the other reports i have seen this always happens around 7000 miles. i have recently received a letter from ford regarding my 2014 focus, stating it has the same issue and that they have extended the transmission warranty to 10 years. i am now cornered this affects all ford models.

My pregnant wife and i were driving down a busy, main nashville road yesterday when our 2016 ford explorer with 8500 miles on it ceased to accelerate. a wrench appeared on the dashboard, rpms dropped to an idle state, and in heavy traffic i could not accelerate in order to move my car off the road, nearly causing an wreck. ford has had my car for two days. this issue is apparently related to a faulty throttle body. a quick internet search shows that hundreds, if not thousands of people have had this same exact issue with similar low mileage 2016 explorers and that ford has determined it to be a faulty throttle body. considering the fact that so many vehicles have experienced this very dangerous issue, ford should be recalling these vehicles. this is a safety issue on par with the gm ignition switch problem. a vehicle losing all power in traffic, without warning, can cause wrecks and deaths. apparently ford is also replacing these faulty throttle bodies with the identical oem part, since "not all of the throttle bodies are affected." ford technicians seem unsure as to whether or not the new throttle body will display the same issues since they are the same part. this is a brand new vehicle and i now feel unsafe driving it, and even less safe having my pregnant wife drive this car. i'm stuck with a family hauler in which i don't feel safe driving my family.

Turned car on, backed out of driveway & it suddenly lost all power & "wrench" light came on. could barely get it to side of the road. after turning it off & on the engine light also came on. car was undrivable, needed to be towed. dealer said it was throttle body that needed to be replaced. car is only 7 months old and only has 7715 miles on it.

Husband was driving the vehicle was about to accelerate to get up a hill on a city street and engine sounded like transmission or other major part just "dropped". steering wheel froze, car idled violently, could not move vehicle, started to roll backwards until emergency brake was applied.acceleration went to literally zero, suv would not move. orange wrench light came on, stated to see manual.placed car in park shut off engine and waited and started at back up again. scarry stuff, 2 children 2 and younger in vehicle. won't let me input on next page, approximately 25-30 miles an hour, suv has 5,500 miles on it

Driving on i-10 about 1 mile before daphne, al, engine sputtered and vehicle began loosing speed. pressing the gas pedal did nothing, check engine light came on, service manual light came on, and airbag light came on. coasted to the side of the interstate, stuck between the white line of the lane edge and a guardrail with only inches to spare from traffic passing at 70 mph. all this with my wife in the front seat and our 2 daughters in the backseat who are 2 years old and 5 months old. engine was running rough and would not increase rpms even when pressing the accelerator pedal. shut engine off and on 6 times before it finally responded to accelerator pedal input. was finally able to merge back on to the interstate and get to the daphne exit. we had to stay the night in a hotel in daphne while we waited for another vehicle to get us home to louisiana. this was a rental vehicle and had to be towed to the mobile airport so that we could get another vehicle from enterprise. a quick internet search revealed numerous complaints of the exact same issue but no evidence of any recall. apparently the throttle body is faulty and most people report that the part is on back order. ford knows about this problem and nhtsa should too but somehow nothing is being done. this incident left us on the side of the road, inches from being killed by passing motorists. how this is not under a recall or stop sale order is beyond me. please initiate a recall and/or stop sale order on these vehicles before someone is killed or seriously injured.

Started smelling sulfur/rotten eggs exhaust through the vents around 3k miles under hard acceleration. it's a police version with the 3.7l. smelled it in re-circulation mode and the fresh air mode. now have 5900 miles on it and one day while i was driving under normal conditions 50-60 mph, the check engine light, airbag light, and wrench light came on. the dash also said "see owners manual". car also makes a sputtering noise. ...updated 01/23/17 *bf

I was driving close to my house and almost caused a big accident while i had my children on board. the car stopped completely ( suddenly stopped) and lost power, i was lucky that not accident occurred ( can u imagine if i was in the miami expressway and that happened). i'm attaching a pic showing the check engine, wrench light that came on while i was driving. i did some research online and found out that many americans are having the same issues, it is a defective throttle body that causes the vehicle to slow down and shutdown at any time. ford is already aware of the problem and you guys more likely are aware too. what are you guys waiting to issue a recall?? waiting for someone to die?

My 2016 ford explorer will lose power under various driving conditions. while on the highway at 45-55 mph the car engine dropped to idle (~800 rpm) and would not respond to the accelerator. this occurred in traffic and created many close calls. it has occurred three times to me, and researching it on the internet has happened to many other people with the same make/model/year. please investigate. this is a significant safety issue.

I was driving 45mph on a busy street when suddenly the car just stalled. i had kids in the back seat and frantically pressed the gas pedal which pressed down but nothing happened. the wrench and check engine light illuminated. luckily, i was able to put my hazards on and pull over. we are so fortunate we didn't reach the highway yet on this busy holiday weekend. i am sure it would have ended differently. this is a very dangerous situation and needs to be addressed. what good is a new car if you can't trust it? hoping the throttle body is a reconfigured part when they fix it. needs a recall!!

Was approaching an intersection to enter an entranceway to an interstate when the car lost speed and would only move at approx. 10 mph. wrench and seatbelt was displayed and message to check owners manual

On 6/28/2016 the vehicle was involved in a loss of control accident due to driver becoming unconscious. the driver and all passengers became unconscious nearly simultaneously. the original assumption was that the driver fell asleep, although she did not remember feeling drowsy prior to the accident. the accident resulted in total loss of the vehicle and no injuries were sustained. the accident occurred on i-85, mp 18 north of montgomery, alabama. since seeing the report today about possible co leakage into the passenger cabin on the ford explorer vehicles, i would now suspect this as a possible contributing factor in this accident...updated 08/07/17 *bf *cn

As i was on my way to work on june 28, as i was driving straight on a major street, approximately 50 mph, when my 2016 ford explorer began to decelerate. even as i pressed the accelerator, the truck would not speed up. as i came to a stop at a busy intersection, the truck began to jerk when i began to accelerate when the light turned green. the truck would not go above 30 mph at this point. i decided to turn around and go back home, which was about 5 miles away and the truck kept decelerating the more i hit the accelerator. i managed to make it home and get my explorer towed to the dealership where i purchased my vehicle. the diagnosis was a bad transmission, in a 5 month old truck, with less than 3500 miles on it. my explorer has been in the shop for two weeks, and i could possibly be looking at another two weeks before it is repaired because the part is on back order.

Brand new 2016 ford explorer with only 6779 miles. unable to accelerate from a stop through a busy intersection. no indication that anything was wrong prior to this. several dash lights came on. car went into limp mode not allowing me to accelerate above 15 mph. check engine light, power train light and airbag light all illuminated. had car towed to dealership. throttle body failure indicated as the issue. part was back ordered for two weeks. verified online that many other new explorer owners have had this same issue around the same mileage. fortunately i was not on a busy highway like some.

2016 ford explorer xlt throttle body failed at just over 8,000 miles without warning. my wife was driving on the highway with our 6 year old daughter and pet dog in 95 degree weather when the vehicle shut down to an idle almost causing an accident and very little shoulder room to pull over on. later i find out, with a simple google search, this has been an ongoing issue with ford throttle bodies for several years. i am very disappointed and it is completely unacceptable for this to be allowed to happen, especially in a brand new vehicle. it is extremely unsafe and unreliable and will most likely cause death or injury. now the vehicle part is on back order because of the number of similar incidences, with no estimated time for repair. now, even after the vehicle gets repaired, i cannot trust or rely on this vehicle to keep my family safe on the highway and will be trading it for a vehicle with a proven safety record. please get this vehicle off the road before someone else's family gets killed for no reason. i will be seeking legal counsel on this matter because it is a known issue and a ignored issue just to make sales, and i will not sit by and let it continue to go unnoticed and ford should value the lives and safety of their customers and get it fixed for good now. not tomorrow, not next week, now!

While driving in traffic there was a loud noise and the car lost power had try and get out of traffic with no power. the throttle body failed. *tr

While driving on city street going 35 mph, vehicle suddenly slowed to 5mph even though i had foot on pedal. it was barely rolling. wrench warning light came on (which i found later means problem with drive train, take to dealer immediately. )engine service light also came on. i was fortunate enough to be able to roll to side of road and turn down street and go into a parking lot. turned engine off and restarted it. wrench light gone but engine light still on. drove around parking lot and it ran normally.i since have researched this online and seems to be a lot of complaints about this. some owners have had this happen to them on freeway doing 60 mph. took vehicle to frontier ford where we purchased the vehicle, they really didn't want to listen. it is currently waiting to be looked at in service dept. but my huge point is this vehicle needs to be recalled. ford doesn't want to seem to acknowledge it. does someone have to die in order for it to be recalled. we were not even offered a loaner vehicle. "we don't do loaners if you didn't buy the extended warranty (which is another scam) obviously they do not stand by their product. this is a safety issue and people will die. if this happens on freeway where i live in san jose california, they will definitely be in serious accidents the way people drive here.will never buy a ford again. especially because their customer service is non existent. there are only 7305 miles on vehicle.

Was driving along busy road making a left turn at rush hour across two lanes of traffic. car simply died. no response to accelerator. wrench light on. i could have been hurt badly. was able to get car out of traffic. was told this is a severe problem with throttle body and ford is aware of this. car has less than 5100 miles on it. this needs to be a recall situation.

Was driving down a street, going about 40mph, the car immediately slowed to 5pmh and would not accelerate even when pushing the gas all the way down. i had to coast it home, drop the family off, and then coast it to the ford dealership. upon arriving, the dealership informed me that ford was aware of the issue and that all parts are currently on back order.

2016 ford explorer v6 toolbar came on checksystem engine light came on going 45 mph went down to -0 mph gas pedal useless no power coasted to parking lot lucky i wasnt on a busy highway or street i guess it will take some body to get killed a couple of times before anything is done 4400miles and throttle body needs replace what a crackerjack joke acourse this is called cheapo depo manufacturing oh thats right parts are made in foreign countries now yes about like no name brand vaseline vehicle was on street city bought car in feb. 2016 if i would og know aboyt this i would not buy a new car especiaaly my wife and grand kids driving for this to happen!!

Problem first appeared on june 3, 2016 with about 10,000 miles. i was driving on interstate 95 past philadelphia airport about 9:30 am at about 60 mph. the vehicle had been driven from a cold start for about 20 minutes. it was raining moderately. the backup camera suddenly appeared on the screen in the center console and the transmission shuddered slightly. i also noticed that the dashboard drive indicator, which normally is lit red when in drive, was white, as were all the other indicators (r, n, etc). i jiggled the shifter without pressing the shifter button but that did not fix the problem. the transmission appeared to be still in drive since the car still had power and was not slowing down. it lasted for about 15 seconds and then the display returned to normal and the d indicator returned to its normal red mode. about 30 seconds later the problem returned and stayed for 10 to 15 seconds and then again reverted back to normal. this behavior repeated one or two more times in the next couple of minutes. after this series of events the car seemed to be normal for the rest of my 1.5 hour trip and has been fine until aug 13, 2016 when the same behavior happened again. this could be a serious safety problem if it gets worse if for nothing else than it is certainly a distraction and may result in transmission damage and loss of control. i did talk to the service manager at my ford dealer (sheridan ford, rt 2 kirkwood highway, wilmington de) on july 21, 2016 when i was getting an oil change and i described the first incident. he did not seem very concerned. he said that they had never heard of that happening but did not have me write anything down. i told him that if it happened again, i would contact ford and the dealer. the problem has occurred 12 more times. i have told the dealer about it every time. i have further text documentation.

Suv is 4 months old and has 12200 miles. while driving on city road at 40 mph the wrench symbol appeared and the car lost all power immediately and slowed down on its own and was moving at 5 mph. i pushed the gas pedal but nothing happened. i parked the suv at a gas station and turn off the engine for 5 minutes and turned back on. everything was normal and the wrench symbol was gone.

While driving on city street there was a burned rubber smell outside vehicle, followed by strong smell of natural gas inside passenger compartment. while driving there was a rattling or thumping sound. thinking back, there was a natural gas smell outside the vehicle days before burned rubber smell. i let the dealer hear a recording of the sound. they described it like the sound of driving on a railroad track. after dealer inspection, the dealer found 'crack in pto due to internal failure' they had to 'replace ptu and ptu vent following wsm procedure in section 307-01'

The power train and engine light came on and the truck stopped driving while on a busy road.

At 70 mph on i-4, the electronic throttle body failed, dropping the engine to idle speed. the engine would not come out of idle, and had to be towed to the dealership. the part failed at 6,300 miles, less than 2,000 miles after the car's first dealership servicing. had i not been in the slow lane at the time, i would have been stranded in the middle of i-4, and possibly killed.

Vehicle lost acceleration suddenly: first time happened when i stopped at the intersection waiting the traffic to clear and when i want the vehicle to accelerate it did not so i pulled over and turned engine off and restart it five minuets later and the vehicle accelerate and i manage to reach my destination, next day i took the vehicle to ford dealer because the service powertrain fault illuminates. ford dealer said that the problem is the throttle body malfunction and need to be replaced but the part is on a back order and is not available for few weeks, the dealer advice me to use the vehicle and if happened again to call him back although i was concern about safety of driving this vehicle. next day the same problem happened more frequent and it happened while i am driving and luckily i managed to pull over safely, this time the service engine soon illuminates as well and stays illuminated after i restart the engine. i contacted the ford dealer again and i got the same answer: you have to wait till we get the part to fix your vehicle !!. .. i told them this vehicle is not safe to drive and ford should issue a recall to fix this problem and make every effort to have the parts and remedy available asap

Driving home from work in my 2 month old 2016 ford explorer with 1900 miles on it and was merging into freeway traffic when there was a sudden loss of power. was pushing on the gas pedal and could hear the engine but the speed of my car was stalled at 35 mph and a wrench light and engine light came on. was able to safely get off the freeway and into a gas station where i called for a tow. when the tow truck arrived i tried moving the car to make it easier to get on the truck but the car would not move in reverse or forward. ford dealership service department tells me it is the transmission and several parts need to be replaced and a few of them are on backorder. the car has been un drivable and in the service department for 11 days already and they tell me maybe in another 10 days the backordered parts may be available

On my 2016 explorer limited 3.5 n/a v6 - under hard (getting on fwy) or extended acceleration (uphill climb) exhaust fumes can be noticed by the passengers in the vehicle. i know there is an open investigation on the 11-15 years but the 16 should be included as well. this has been the case from new to current 11k miles. this happened on my previous 2013 model as well.

Smell exhaust fumes inside cabin of vehicle. exposure to carbon monoxide concern. happens during full acceleration and driving uphill and with a/c unit on.noticed upon lease reception. ford replaced exhaust system but not helped, actually now worse. ongoing issue unresolved.
