Problems with 2014 Ford Explorer ENGINE

On average, the 2014 Ford Explorer starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 39 074 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2014 Ford Explorer

I'm getting cel error code p0016. there is a rattling noise on startup and sometimes during highway driving everyday. my explorer sport has 65,340 miles on it, w ay to soon for a timing chain. the dealer stated i probably have timing chain stretch and there no tsb to resolved the issue in my truck even though i have the same ecoboost engine as the f150 that the tsb 17-0026 does apply to. why not the ford explorer that has same exact engine as f150 with the same problem? why was the ford explorer ecoboost left out of the tsb? there's an issue with the engine not model of truck. i'm hopefully looking for ford to honer the tsb for my vehicle that has the same engine defect

There is an odor leaking into the car from either the engine or the exhaust . i've noticed it multiple times over the last few days and we have to put the windows down to not feel sick when we breathe. it happens whether i am driving or stopped at a light. i also started feeling tired while driving and almost fell asleep at the wheel in the middle of the day. i have now stopped using the vehicle. something is very wrong.

Believe there is an issue with carbon monoxide in my vehicle. while driving for about 4 hours the carbon monoxide detector in my bag began to sound indicating the presence of carbon monoxide. it did not stop until i removed it from the vehicle. i was light headed and experiencing nausea at the time.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford explorer. while driving 40 mph, the vehicle backfired and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the crankshaft and cam shaft sensors needed to be replaced. the contact called sunrise ford of fontana (located at 16005 valley blvd, fontana, ca 92335, (888) 629-1239) and informed them of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 100,000.

I was getting headaches while driving so i purchased a carbon monoxide detector for my explorer for $149.00. it registered around 18-20ppm when driving. july 2019 i had the 'repair' done at my local dealer. august 2019, more headaches and my vehicle still registers 18-20 ppm while driving. the apparent fix did nothing to correct the carbon monoxide from leaking into my cabin area. driving with air conditioner on and in recirculating mode.

The engine began leaking coolant caused by the water pump seal failing. we have had several others that also have had water pump failures.

When accelerating from a parked position, the engine appears to skip, and or buck. it is noticeable, but the dealer cannot remedy it.

Timing chain and cam phasers causing vehicle to excel erase and stop with no control. power steering going in and out while driving.

When suddenly accelerating to speed over 65 mph , exhaust gas/fumes enter the main cabin, and linger for sometime, until i open all windows to dissipate the fumes. this issue always occur during sudden acceleration. i have taken vehicle to dealer several times and they installed external seals but issue continues, even after the fixes.

We have experienced a clicking noise on our car over the last couple of weeks and my wife has been complaining of headaches and fatigue during the same time as well. we took the car into the shop and it has been identified as a crack exhaust manifold which would cost us $1,100 to fix. i researched and saw this 1.3million reports of the samething. i called ford and they refused to help with the repairs as there is no recall on this issue. i am not sure how you don't recall a very known issue that i now see personally causes health issues that could be fatal - plus you get with a cost that they are aware of. not good business and very dangerous - it is sad it may take a fatal accident before ford recalls this.

Fuel smell/fumes entering passenger cabin when ac/heat is on. sometimes at a stop or slow pace and windows are open fumes or smell is apparent. once parked you can smell from the front part of the vehicle in the hood near the wiper blades.

Chain driven water pump failure at 85,000 miles

Won't turn off when turn off button is pushed to turn vehicle off, we have to keep pressing button on gear shift and it has taken 35 minutes to turn it off which just happend today oct. 30, 2018 it has raised the driver seat twice all by iteself while the vehicle has been turned off and no one is in the vehicle when this has happened. it makes odd noises inside the dash when vehicle is turned off

2014 ford explorer 3.5 liter eco-boost >>oil lines leak at turbo , causing oil to leak down onto exhaust. very bad smell !! there is already recalls for newer models but not the 2014. people are going to get hurt. ford only stated to keep my receipts for reimbursement if there is ever a re-call?

Idler pully went bad threw belt..only had 32,000 miles on it...in motion on a city street.happend on a sunday wile on vacation in florida..took to firestone dealer to fix..cost me $372.00 to fix...

Headaches by my husband and myself while driving or riding. carbon monoxide readings first time read at 11ppm on a 10 minute trip. continual monitering reads at 6-9 on normal driving. readings at 14 on acceleration. i feel it's unhealthy and safeto drive this car daily.

All recommended repairs have been completed on the ford explorer and exhaust fumes are still present in the cabin.

Exhaust started coming into rear of vehicle. we were able to smell it when the car was stopped or moving slowly. people in the backseat could smell it before those in the front could.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford explorer. the contact stated that there was an open throttle failure that caused fumes to enter the cabin of the vehicle. the failure was similar to that listed in nhtsa action number: ea17002 (structure, engine and engine cooling), but the vehicle was not included. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the dealer was not contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the vin and failure mileage were not available.

We brought the vehicle to the dealer around with about 10,000 miles on may 2018 stating we smelled exhaust fumes inside the vehicle. they put some type of rubber plugs in the lift gate rear hatch. this didn't cure the problem. brought the vehicle back on august 21, 2018 with 13,800 miles and told them when we tried to enter a freeway while accelerating into traffic with the a/c on there is a very profound odor of exhaust fumes inside the vehicle. they stated there was a tsb issued for this vehicle back in 2016 for this issue. but unfortunately even though the car only has 13,800 miles on it now, it is over the 3 year warranty period and the extended warranty we purchased from them for 50,000 or five years won't cover it either. dealer wants to charge us 1,100 for the repairs. which should have been covered earlier if we were told back in 2016 there was a tsb for this problem while it was still under warranty. this car may be five years old but it only had 10,000 miles when it was brought in the first time. car is just about brand new and they want us to pay for repairs on a new vehicle that has a defective exhaust system.

Exhaust smell/fumes were noticed twice on a 3 hour trip. passengers in the vehicle felt nauseated and had headaches that were not present before the trip and were relieved after exiting the vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford explorer. while driving 55 mph, the steering wheel failed to move. the following day, the vehicle failed to start and the oil pressure, starting system failure, traction control, and engine coolant warning indicators illuminated. the contact called a local dealer (expressway ford, 3800 highway 62 w, mt vernon, in 47620, (812) 838-4366) and was informed that the vehicle was not covered under a warranty or recall. the manufacturer was notified and informed the contact to have the vehicle towed to the local dealer. additionally, the contact was referred to nhtsa. the failure mileage was 120,336.

Vehicle has a problem with cam phasers, cam postition sensors & stretch timing chain

During commutes to and from work, typically with stop-and-go conditions at slow speed, i become very sleepy and inattentive, almost to the point of passing out. this happened recently after having the car serviced for oil change and a standard 15-point inspection.

I drive my ford explorer almost every day and i was becoming progressively fatigued and dizzy ( loss of normal balance). i could not pin pont the problem area until i received an "urgent recall notice" from our regular ford dealership in belvidere, illinois. my doctor ordered a special blood test which confirmed a high level of carbon monoxide in my blood. the vehicle was repaired but i still have some amount of the health problems. thanks, jim

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford explorer. while driving approximately 65 mph, the 18-month old child, who was in a safety seat on the rear passenger seat, became unresponsive. the vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road and the contact called 911. the child was taken to the emergency room where the doctor ran several tests, but was unable to diagnose what happened to the child. the child recovered and was released from the emergency room. the child was taken back into the vehicle and, five minutes into the drive back to the contact's residence, the failure recurred. the child became responsive when the contact rolled down the window. the child was taken to the pediatrician who ruled out that the child might have suffered a seizure. both the mother and the pediatrician suspected that the child might have suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning. the dealer was called (fesler auto mall in fairfield, iowa, 641-472-2161), but did not call back as promised. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vehicle would be repaired. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 82,000.

Driving on highway approx 65 mph in rain. sudden loss of power steering, message on dashboard indicating check charging system, then hill assist failure, then warning message that all accessory power was disabled to conserve power. then all lights on dashboard lit up. loss of power steering in rain on highway almost caused vehicle to lose control and be involved in multiple car accident. serpentine belt was found to be in proper condition, and was able to drive home alternate route along 35mph roads. no further problems aside from occasional squeak under acceleration. immediately followed up with service call, serpentine bell was in good condition, but belt tensioner spring had failed. vehicle has only 57,000 miles. seems excessively early for this type of part to fail.

Strong exhaust smell in the cabin of the suv. every time the accelerator is pressed for a acceleration that is fast a strong exhaust smell is noticed in the cabin of the suv. this is the same smell that comes from the exhaust pipes.

This is a follow up to nhtsa id 11019920 filed 8/26/17. exhaust odor, smells like sulfur, strong, pungent, coming through dahs board vents during sustained acceleration and shortly after. the problem is repeatable every time: put vent system in recirculation mode, sustained acceleration over 3,000 rpm, wait 5 seconds, strong sulfur odor comes through dash board vents. i am now experiencing headaches on a consistent basis as i have been driving the vehicle more often for commuting since purchasing it in march 2017 with 25k miles. i am seeing a doctor and am building a case for more severe headaches with increased driving in my explorer. today, i decided to look under the vehicle - i am including photos of the exhaust manifold which shows a crack near the pipe-to-flange connection. and, no, my vehicle is not a police cruiser and it does not have aftermarket parts installed. how many more complaints do you need? tsb 14-0130 is ford's cheap attempt to hide a very serious problem and avoid a costly recall of over 1 million vehicles. the evidence continues to mount, injuries have occurred, countless explorer owners have expended much resources in filing complaints, and ford says, "these vehicles are safe. we have not found a safety issue here". ford has issued tsbs which do not address the problem. their latest insult to offer to "inspect and repair" rear lift gates and drain valves, and reprogram the air circulation system is laughable, nothing more than a distraction to hide the real problem. ford should put every explorer on a lift and inspect the exhaust manifolds, and do extensive testing of the vacuum system that is connected to the air circulation system. nhtsa: why is it taking you so long to address this problem? does someone need to die before you or ford take this matter seriously? you have the evidence you need to force a recall, now! *dt*jb

Exhaust fumes in cabin when accelerating at higher speeds, especially when entering interstate and passing cars at higher speeds.

My 2014 explorer has bad fume smells in the cabin when accelerating to pass vehicles. i have taken it to the dealer once to have it repaired but it still does it. i have also had a fume smell in my nose that is there when i am not in the car. i didn't know what it was and am scheduled for an mri but i have recently realized the car cabin smells the same as the smell in my nose.

When ever i exhilarate i can smell emissions in my cabin of my truck to the point that i have to open the windows or ill get dizzy and headaches. at low speeds and high speeds as well.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford explorer. the contact stated that the engine surged and caused the vehicle to accelerate unexpectedly. the failure was experienced several times. the driver was able to place the gear in neutral and maneuver to the side of the road to safely stop the vehicle. a complaint was filed with the manufacturer and the contact was provided case number: cas-13346113-c5w0t8. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 34,000.

Ford explorer exhaust-leak. my 2014 ford explorer first exhibited a strong exhaust leak smells in the cabin about 18 months ago with approximately 18-20,000 miles. the smell was most noticeable after coming to a stop with the car at full operating temperature. around town it never seems to be present. i took it to loveland ford and they installed a "kit" which seemed to stop the problem, however it has recently come back stronger than ever. yesterday, i drove from denver up into the rockies and the problem was particularly bad on the return trip in stop and go traffic to the point i was feeling sick by the time i got home. i have had this before but the circumstances made this particularly unpleasant. so the circumstance when it most often exhibits the strong "rotten egg" smell mixed with exhaust is when the vehicle is at full temperature and comes to a stop.

I have a 2014 ford explorer with 89k miles. i recently brought it to the dealer for an the smell of exhaust fumes inside the vehicle. the smell comes at higher speeds (above 50 mph) and when the vehicle comes to a full stop. the vehicle must be at full operating temperature before you can smell the exhaust fumes. currently the solution i received from the dealer is to replace the muffler and the dual air extractor.

When i accelerate up hill or to pass anyone the exhaust smell comes through my air conditioner. it smells like rotten eggs. when i first got the car i called the dealer and they told me it was just because the car was new and not to worry about it. but it makes me sick and dizzy sometimes while driving.

Piston rod broke and vehicle comes to an abrupt stop and loses power. this happened while driving on a highway.

Vehicle under hard acceleration and the air is on recirculate, the cabin fills up with exhaust.

Exhaust odor enters the cabin when under high acceleration when merging onto a freeway or under sustained, high rpm (above approximately 3,000 rpm) when traveling in mountainous freeways with sustained, uphill grade. i have noticed this occurrence more than six times since i purchased the vehicle 5 months ago (at the end of march 2017 with 25,000 miles). the odor smells like sulfur and fills the cabin to the extent that persons sitting in the rear seats can smell the odor. the air conditioning system is usually on and in recirculation mode. currently, the vehicle has 30,000 miles (august 26, 2017), has never been in an accident, and is in excellent condition (except for the exhaust odor!) and has no mechanical modifications.

I am writing to you in regards to physical illness that i have suffered as well as my passengers from my 2014 ford explorer police interceptor package. starting back when i first purchased the vehicle at approximately 59,000 miles, i have experienced an exhaust odor in the cabin shortly after accelerating over 3,000rpms. this issue has been investigated at my local dealership twice, with the technician confirming the smell. after this work was performed, i still to this day am suffering from exhaust fumes and physical illness directly related to my ford explorer. all repair orders from involved ford dealerships are in my possession confirming exhaust fumes are still entering the cabin. from the time i took ownership in october 2016, i have experienced physical illness when driving the vehicle for more than 1 hour at a time. i get extremely lightheaded and nauseated, which has caused me to frequently stop the vehicle and vomit. my passengers in the vehicle have also experienced similar symptoms when riding in the vehicle. when this happens, i stop at a safe location and remove myself to fresh air, and the symptoms soon pass and i am able to drive again. recently, i have traveled from massachusetts to vermont in my explorer. the mostly highway driving trip it was me as well as my girlfriend. after around an hour of driving at 60mph, my girlfriend and i were feeling very dizzy and became nauseated, so i opted to stop and relax at a rest stop for fresh air prior to continuing my trip to vermont. i have installed a carbon monoxide detector in my vehicle, which has activated more than one occasion while driving. at this time i am negotiating with ford's office of general counsel to perform a buyback of my explorer and replace it with a different vehicle.

When accelerating, a strong odor comes from the air vents. the odor lingers and smells very strong, i believe this may be exhaust fumes, as it only happens during acceleration.

Exhaust leak into vehicle

There is an exhaust smell of rotten eggs, burnt rubber, and sulfur that protrudes from the air vents into the cabin of the vehicle upon acceleration and a smaller amount of exhaust protrusion upon idle. both city and highway driving are affected. the exhaust smell has caused some passenger nausea.

When the vehicle is running the exhaust can be smelled inside the cabin. this happens to a noticeable level when the vehicle is excelerated at a faster pace by pressing the gas pedal quickly to excelerate quickly. this has occurred multiple times and can be reproduced by fast exceleration. the consumer stated the rear left tire blew out. the passenger was injured.*js

Nausea, headache. problems may be related to carbon monoxide issue's with vehicle's on-going investigation.

Carbon minoxide entering the cabin. exhaust fumes are entering the cabin.

First long trip in my suv. most of my driving is city driving to and from work. while traveling with the family on our vacation, we all noticed after acceleration (passing cars or up inclines) the car smelled like sulfur or a waste treatment plant (other clever words used by my daughters). this was all highway (two lane up to four lane) travel. approximately 600 miles each way. with the frequency of the problem on this trip, i realized i've smelled it before but just assumed i was driving past a sewage problem or treatment facility. i never thought about an issue with my car that would cause a smell like that. upon googling what might cause the problem, i found a lot of info on the issue, including a ford service bulletin (attached), lawsuits and your organization's investigation of the issue. based on what i read, i felt i should let you know i have the same issue. i've contacted the local ford dealership from whom i bought the car and who services the car and they eventually found a bulletin that covers the issue but because my car is recently out of warranty, said i need to pay for the investigation and possible fix(es). i am not happy about that either and am now concerned whether there is actually a fix. given the knowledge ford has about this issue, i would expect ford to fix this at their cost . . . assuming there is a fix. i'm going to follow this with a call to ford motor company's customer service department to make them aware.

Upon acceleration in passing gear there's a foul odor coming thru the air vents. it smells like an over heated hair dryer. it's bad enough that the windows need to be opened to let the odor out. my suv is in the shop for the 2nd time in a year with the same problem. today's date is 07/02/2018

Purchased a 2014 ford explorer in february 2014, and within weeks of owning the vehicle i started to notice a foul smell entering the cabin immediately after acceleration. if acceleration occurs quickly, with a higher then normal rpm occurring, the smell becomes worse. on three separate occasions, i have taken the vehicle to mac haik ford in houston for repair. the first two visits were were non-productive, as the dealership claimed they could not reproduce the issue. on the third visit, i asked that they technician go on a test drive with me in the car. this visit finally resulted in an admission from the technician that he could also smell the odor, and they agreed to keep the vehicle and identify the source of the issue. after a few days, i was told that the issue had been corrected by adding an additional vent line towards the rear of the vehicle. within hours of having the vehicle back, it had become obvious that a permanent fix was not installed, and the odor inside the cabin has continued to occur regularly over the past three years.

Exhaust fumes odor while driving is causing nausea and headaches to me and my wife making it unbearable and unsafe to drive. it started out only when we would turn on a/c but now its all the time.
