While driving on the highway, the vehicle's power steering system failed without warning. the steering took much more muscle to maneuver, and was a lot less responsive. there was no indication on the dash that anything occurred. in the days following the power steering system intermittently kicked in and back out, making it hard to steer consistently and requiring much more attention. the vehicle has still never provided any indication that the power steering system has been compromised. in reading about this failure it should be noted that the previous versions of this vehicle were recalled for steering failures as well.

2014 ford explorer steering wheel locked up, i thought it was the steering wheel lock motor but bad "electronic" noise if you turn wheel either way. every once in a while it will start up and steer normally, but then manual steering, then locked up again. no code. wife was on highway when it went out, says she wont drive it again. i found out now that the electronic steering gears have been an ongoing issue,... ford, own up and help with this expensive repair.

Vehicle became difficult to steer when driving on several occasions. especially when trying to turn left. vehicle was taken to a mechanic who scanned the steering control system and test drove the vehicle. the code showed rack internal failure and it was recommended to replace the power steering rack. total quoted cost is $1942 + tax. it was suggested that this had been the topic of a recall, however the years included in the recall do not include the 2014. will be contacting the ford dealership to discuss further action this should be covered, as it is the same issue of the previous recall, despite being a later model and a major safety issue. i was informed by the mechanic that the loss of the sensor could cause the wheels to steer in the wrong direction and become a major problem.

Started loosing power steering then lost all assist completely very unsafe to operate had to return home i couldn't control the vehicle i have to get the vehicle towed

While driving our 2014 ford explorer, the service steering assist warning light came on, then the acs fault warning light came on. at that time, the power steering went out and the turn signals quit working properly. the vehicle could still be steered manually by a physically stronger person, but not by the average person. the vehicle was taken to the local ford dealership, where we were informed that a new rack and pinion would be needed. the dealer service manager stated that this repair has been covered under a previous recall for 2011-2013 explorers, however, that my particular model was not covered. after doing more research, the steering going out seems to be a common problem in all late model ford explorers. i am concerned that if ford has not resolved this issue in later model explorers, there will be accidents resulting from this malfunction.

Steering goes out while driving. therefore, the power steering show power steering assist fault and traction control comes on. so while driving it goes out it is hard to dri e and can cause a major accident.

Lost power steering while driving down the highway doing over 55mph. took to a ford dealership for repair, they fixed it, they replaced the power steering rack... worked for 3 weeks and now it is not working again. again while driving the car on the road the power steering went out.

I was driving my 2014 ford explorer along the freeway doing about 70 mph and started smelling an odor when all of a sudden the steering wheel started violently shaking and a bell stated beeping. a message on the left blinked on steering failed park safely and steering traction lights came on . the car was hard to steer. i had to find a place to pull over quickly. i managed to get the car off the freeway. we sat there trying to figure out what happen and if we could possibly drive it home. but of course we couldn't as the steering wheel was completely locked. nothing we could do but call a wrecker to tow the car home. if i had been driving in the far left lane, we would have been in a dangerous position to get hit as the car lost power all of a sudden. last night while checking for recall information, i found this web site and learned that almost a hundred other people have had the exact same problem but could not find a recall number. i going to venture a guess that there has not been enough serious injuries or deaths yet. we were quoted over $1800 to repair our car. we cannot afford this. someone needs to say enough, all these same problems on the same car has to be a manufacturer's failure. the consumers need help now. is anyone listening to us?

Whining, squeaking noise from steering column upon turning or moving the wheel at any speed, left or right. dealer says the entire steering assembly and computer has to be replaced to prevent steering failure in the future, at the cost of $1900. i see other recalls for the same problem in years 2011-2013 and 2015-2017. i have also read a lot of online complaints about this same problem in other 2014 explorers.

Noticed loud grinding noise while turning right driving less than 10mph. no lights have come on yet. took it to mechanic and he told me that the steering rack is failing and will need to be replaced. i noticed that the 2011,12,13 recalled but doesn't cover the same problem that 2014's are having.

Car did not feel right after about 10 miles of highway driving but i didn't know what was happening. it was difficult to steer. a few miles after several warnings came on telling me there is a steering failure and to stop and get immediate service. i pulled off the highway and had the car towed and it's at the dealer now.

The electrical system periodically goes out, the dash lights blink off and on, alrms go off with messages that state there is a failure of terrain, management, abs system and power steering, then the power steering goes out immediately , dash is black. this is very dangerous , it seems to be a known issue with ford when researching the issue. someone can wreck and die with this electrical failure

Noticed loud grinding noise while turning either left or right while traveling around 40mph. no lights have come on yet. took it to mechanic and he told me that the steering rack is failing and will need to be replaced. ford quoted me roughly $1500 for the rack and labor, this is crazy that the 2011,12,13 recall doesn't cover the same problem that 2014's are having.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford explorer. while the contact's husband was driving 5 mph and making a left turn, the steering wheel jerked and became difficult to turn. also, the traction control warning indicator illuminated and "steering failed" was displayed. the vehicle was towed to the local dealer (stuart powell ford, inc., 225 s danville byp, danville, ky 40422, (859) 238-1197) where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion seized and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: cas 15916495. the failure mileage was 52,940.

Ford explorer looses power steering. 2014 ford explorer looses power steering while driving. several codes are generated. these codes match the codes and problems with the 2011-2013 ford steering modules. i had it happen while driving on the highway with sagnificant loss of steering control. i contacted ford and they said there is nothing they can do. iv attached a picture of the diagnostics screen from ford.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford explorer. while driving 25 mph, the steering seized when making a turn. the vehicle was able to be driven home and was later taken to norris ford (901 merritt blvd, baltimore, md 21222, (410) 285-0200). the dealer stated that there were no recalls for the vehicle. the vehicle was repaired but the parts replaced were unknown. the manufacturer was called and stated that there was noting they could do since there were no recalls on the vehicle. the manufacturer advised the contact to call nhtsa and file a complaint. the failure mileage was 62,500.

My wife drove our explorer to ft. wayne in.(aprrox.20 mi.) to go shopping. when she got back into the vehicle to leave parking lot she was unable to steer it. she said that the vehicle was making noises when she would turn the steering wheel. message came up as traction control failure and to pull of the road immediately. i had to drive over in another vehicle to bring the vehicle home. it took every effort i had to control the vehicle home to the local ford dealer. the ford dealership replaced the steering gear assembly for a total cost of 1603.06$. the vehicle only has 61k miles

The whole steering column and power steering locked down driving about 55 mph without warning. i had to muscle it off the road and out of harms way. i had it fixed by ford and now it is messing up a second time.

2014 ford explorer sport. on august 12 after driving @ 1 hour, i briefly turned the vehicle off. restarted the car within 5 minutes to back into my garage and received a "steering assist fault" warning and the steering wheel seized. turned the vehicle off again, let it cool a while, then was able to back it into the garage. the failure mileage was 46,022. this was the 2nd time the steering failed with the first instance on aug 2, 2018. the vehicle was taken to marin ford aug 28 (6995 redwood blvd, novato, ca 94945 (415-914-1118) where it was determined the electronic power steering (epas) unit needs to be replaced with @ cost of $2500. the marin ford service advisor, roger, indicated he contacted ford and was told this would be covered under warranty or by any recall. upon researching this issue, it appears it is not uncommon, certainly for older model explorers and other ford vehicles with epas steering. it seems there may be a known heating problem affecting the epas thermal connectors that ford has taking some efforts to mitigate, but not correct (heat shielding, air channeling, etc). see links for other info. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szhmxwcp9fo http://www.carproblemzoo.com/ford/explorer/lose-power-steering-problems.php

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford explorer. while driving 40 mph, the steering wheel seized and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to leo kaytes ford (145 ny-94, warwick, ny 10990, (845) 986-1131) where it was awaiting diagnostic testing and repairs. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not assist. the failure mileage was 40,627.

At 61946 the electronic power steering failed. while the wife was driving she noticed a distinctive noise when she turned and it pulled suddenly to the left. fortunately there was no accident. upon a internet i found that from 2008-2013 ford explorers had had recalls dealing with the electronic power steering. after reading previous year complaints, i can say they still have issues with the electronic power steering. ford needs to keep the recalls going.

The first time, the vehicle was in the garage and as i was backing out, the traction control and power steering assist failure warnings came. i turned off the car and everything seemed to reboot. the next time i was just pulling out of a parking lot, but this time, the car took numerous attempts to finally reboot. then i was on a highway and was barely able to make it to the breakdown lane to stop and try to regain power steering. that was very dangerous! shortly thereafter, i turned on the car in the garage, and the light came on and never went out along with the power steering. my question is; why is this exact problem a recall for 2011 2012 2013 explorers but not 2014? my acquaintance also has an explorer and is experiencing the same issue. clearly ford is aware of this dangerous malfunction.

While driving at 70 mph the left wheel felt like it was going left and the right felt like it was going right while holding wheel straight. very difficult to control. then steering assist fault message and traction control light came on.

Steering gear and tie rod issue. tie rods have failed and steering gear is going out. dealer recommends complete replacement. diagnosis is that steering will lock up will driving once steering gear completely fails.

Steering assist fault message came up when my wife started driving off to pick up our kid from school and steering was excessively difficult for her to safely manage. vehicle currently has 92,350 miles.

Stopped for fuel on 5/13/18. when i restarted the vehicle i received a warning stating service power steering assist failure. no longer have power steering, traction control, or turn signals. bringing it to the dealership today. vehicle was manufactured 10/2013.

While driving the traction control turned off, which caused the electronic steering to turn off. the car jerked to the left side (almost hitting a box truck). i had to pull the steering wheel with all my strength to get the car to steer correctly. took the car to dealership and was told the electronic steering gear needed to be replaced.

The electronic steering gear abruptly failed. pulling out of my driveway. steering stopped and received light warning. ' steering loss stop safely' lost all function of steering and traction. dealership says 2234.00 to repair. this was a recall on the 2013 vehicles and older. i could have easily been on highway the day before with my kids. it would have caused severe accident, to lose steering at 65 mph.

On december 27, 2017 the steering wheel on my 2014 ford explorer limited seized. i was unable to move the wheel in any direction (even by force). the vehicle was stationary and in my driveway. it was unoccupied. it happened when i started the car, put it in gear, and couldn't turn the wheel in any direction. the vehicle was purchased new on 2/11/14 and had 34,872 miles. my local dealer advised it was out of warranty and there were no recalls listed. i found prior ford recalls for multiple makes/models and specifically for explorer model years '11 through '13 dealing with steering issues pertaining to electronic power assisted steering [epas] failures. [recall 14v286000 and/or 17s23] attached is the repair bill for $2,180.67 [note the towing service]. i had to have the electric rack & pinion assembly replaced. the part alone, excluding labor was $1,120.58. on january 2, 2018 i phoned ford at 800-392-ford and spoke with kimberly. i was provided with reference # cas1328239. again, i was advised there is no recall issued and was told to hold on to my receipt should there ever be a recall. in my opinion, this should never had happened. i am thankful i wasn't driving with my family in the car. this catastrophic failure could have resulted in a major accident. thank you for looking into the matter,

Driving on highway approx 65 mph in rain. sudden loss of power steering, message on dashboard indicating check charging system, then hill assist failure, then warning message that all accessory power was disabled to conserve power. then all lights on dashboard lit up. loss of power steering in rain on highway almost caused vehicle to lose control and be involved in multiple car accident. serpentine belt was found to be in proper condition, and was able to drive home alternate route along 35mph roads. no further problems aside from occasional squeak under acceleration. immediately followed up with service call, serpentine bell was in good condition, but belt tensioner spring had failed. vehicle has only 57,000 miles. seems excessively early for this type of part to fail.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford explorer. while driving approximately 35 mph, the contact lost control of the steering wheel and the brakes started to squeak and then locked up. the vehicle shifted into oncoming traffic, but no crash occurred. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was towed to frank fletcher ford lincoln (3015 turkey creek rd, joplin mo 64801, phone number: (417) 623-5660) where it was diagnosed that the control arm detached due to the contact hitting something with the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 85,000.

Steering went out cant turn wheel no power steering

On july 20, 2017, while pulling the vehicle out of my garage, the power steering failed. a warning light about traction control came on. thinking the traction control had inadvertently been pressed, i turned the vehicle off and then on again. the vehicle began functioning normally at that point. on sunday, july 30, 2017, as my husband was driving on the highway, with me and 3 of our children as passengers, the power steering failed again and warning lights came on simultaneously about traction control being turned off and power steering assist needing service. the steering wheel was extremely difficult to move. turning the vehicle off and then on once again seemed to reset the power steering again. i called autofair ford of haverhill, ma the next day and they told me to bring the vehicle in that afternoon. on the way to autofair ford, the power steering failed again. autofair diagnosed the issue as a failed steering rack and replaced the steering rack and program system for a total of $1721.90. upon researching this issue online, i learned that the 2011, 2012, and 2013 ford explorers had the same or very similar issue and there was a recall. in addition, i found message threads on various websites of 2014 ford explorers having the same or similar issues as we did. luckily, when the power steering failed on my vehicle, we were able to keep the vehicle under control and an accident did not occur; however, if sudden sharp steering would have been needed, there likely would have been one. in addition, a failure such as this one should not occur on a vehicle that is barely 3 years old with about 48,450 miles on it. we have had all regular recommended maintenances performed on this vehicle at autofair ford, formally regan ford, from the time of purchase as a new vehicle.
