BODY 149

Recently reported STRUCTURE problems on 2013 Ford Explorer

I was standing at a red light and was rear ended by a speeding driver. i was catapulted into the truck standing in front of me. the front end of the car was totaled, as well as the frame bent from the rear; where i was hit originally only milliseconds before. i bought the vehicle because of the air bag protection, no airbags deployed. a fireman on scene commented that he could not believe that the airbags did not deploy. my vehicle is in the police impound lot, because of an accident resulting in injuries. i have since shown the pictures to several people, even mechanics; and they have all stated that there is something wrong with the airbags, since they did not deploy. the insurance company is demanding that i release the vehicle to them immediately.

A pillar exterior trim cover piece flew off on the expressway, a friends has done the same thing and after checking on line this seems to be a commons problem.

The driver's side door sensor is not working properly. it can take up to 10 minutes for the door ajar light to turn off, even though you can slam the door shut 20 times.

Paint is bubbling and separating from the front of the hood on the top and underneath of the surface. no break in paint noticed from the surface. showed to dealer and they sent on to ford with no resolution.

The driver side "door ajar" alarm is constantly on, even though the door is firmly closed and secure.the alarm keeps going off and the dome light is on while the vehicle is in motion for a dangerous period of time. this seems to be a common and dangerous complaint for similar vehicles in similar years.according to what i have read online and watched online there are a lot of like vehicles out there with this problem.

Door ajar issue. the door doesnt want to latch and the dome light stays on. doesnt matter if your driving or stationary the issue still persists. while driving it will tell you onboard that you have to put the car and park and close the door. very dangerous.

Paint bubbles on hood inside and out with corrosion, 2) power steering failing, recall for issue in effect, but, not mine have to pay $2000 for repairs, unable to steer while driving low speed

The paint is bubbling and flaking off the edge of the hood. ford refused to assist.

While i was driving on the highway doing 65mph, the moldings both left and right that are attached to the front windshield flew off and could have caused an accident or something more serious. now i am left with all the nuts and bolts exposed and ford will not cover, instead they want me to pay $500 to fix it. i just purchased this vehicle 6 months ago and have read online of this same thing happening to many others who were told they would have to pay as well. ford is lucky no one was seriously hurt, i want this investigated so no future accidents happen .

While driving at night on a back road the driver's side door of my ford explorer suddenly opened for no reason while the vehicle was in motion. the sudden door opening caused me to swerve and i hit the passenger side mirror on a sign post. upon examination after pulling over, the driver's side door handle appeared to be defective. it had fallen apart, a small latch in the handle was broken causing it come loose on the exterior of the door for no reason. the driver's side door handle, the passenger side mirror, and the passenger side window ended up having to be replaced. due to resourcefulness of my husband, we were able to obtain parts and repair the damages ourselves but the cost of the parts alone totaled in excess of $400.00.

Contamination of the metal in the hood at the factory is causing the paint to bubble and flake off.

Driver's door latch will not move. door will not close. door ajar light stays on.

I was washing my car this weekend and noticed bubbles under the paint on the edge of my 2013 ford explorer hood. i immediately thought it was rust and went straight to the dealer. once at the body shop they told me they have seen many fords with aluminum hoods with the same problem but they could not help me cause i was over 36k miles. apparently this problem goes back to 2007. i could not believe ford had the audacity to knowingly practice a manufacturing process that had undesirable results. i called ford and they claimed they could not help me. to make it worse, they claim it was not a known issue, hence no recall. waiting to hear from a supervisor, but now i know i will not get a favorable response until we receive results of class action lawsuit in nj. btw, my one dealer claims a considerable larger amount of repairs than complaints you see here.

Paint bubbling and flaking on the hood.

Corrosion bubbles on hood. it is a sahem on a 2013 truck.

My drivers side and passenger side doors only open from the inside. my back passenger side door does not open at all. i've had the front locks greased and they still only open from the inside. so to get in the vehicle, you have to unlock it, open back driver side door, reach in and open driver door and then passenger from inside. no mechanic i've spoken with or taken my vehicle to has been able to get in the back passenger door including the dealership.

Paint on hood has corroded causing the paint to peel off. it is happening all along bottom edge of hood. car has been garage kept.

Exhaust fumes in occupant compartment. while accelerating exhaust fumes are entering the passenger cabin. this problem is not limited to just the explorer. our 2013 ford edge also had the same issue.

Paint is bubbling up on the hood of the car. called ford and they say its out of warranty sorry. the car is only 2 years old this should not be happening to a 40,00 dollar car.

Aluminum hood corrosion causing paint to bubble and chip.

As with most ford's my explorer has significant paint bubbling on the hood. it is a known problem with ford's and they never mentioned it to me as an owner. i only noticed it after an unrelated fender bender and the body shop pointed it out to me. my vehicle was already out of warranty by a few thousand miles but clearly the problem did not just occur after they warranty ended but i never though to look at the paint on my hood. if ford had done the right thing and told owners to look out for this known defect and correct any defective hoods regardless of the warranty, it would have shown some loyalty to its customers. i am done buying ford's and will advise anyone i know not to buy ford.

We bought our vehicle used in 2015 with less than 40k miles on it. it is our main, family vehicle. the first issues started with paint chipping on the hood. the ford store we bought it from never stated this was a problem. we did notice it after having it at home and it has gradually become worse. i have had usaa inspect it and they said it looks like "someone drove it where there was high sulfur present"---near water or etc. the second issue is with the engine. on several occasions our vehicle has failed to turn over at the first start. will sit there and make noises like it is trying but fail and turn off. one instance happened while we were driving on a street road. car had trouble starting and then shut off randomly. we have contacted usaa and taken the vehicle to our local ford dealership but they cannot seem to help resolve either issues. upon conducting our own research i see that these are re-occurring issues with other owners, across the us and ford has yet to resolve. vehicle is unsafe

Paint on hood is bubbling. dealer will not honor ford's 5-year extended corrosion coverage period because the body panel is not showing a hole "though" the body panel. the warranty defines the coverage only if the body panel becomes perforated due to corrosion from normal use. however, nowhere in the warranty does it state it must be through the body panels. in my book, the definition of perforation is a pattern of holes, and the definition of a hole is a hollow place in a solid body or a cavity or a pit. the paint is definitely showing a pattern of cavities or pits yet the dealer does not agree.

Corrosion (oxidation) on the hood of the vehicle. not necessarily a safety concern but a concern non the less. i entered, through my local ford dealer, a prior approval claim for the damage and was turned down, ford says they don't warranty rust claims unless the part has rusted through. searching on google, "ford hood rusting", i see that this is a national problem and that ford is well aware of the issue, yet they continue to deny claims.

Pealing paint on hood which has expanded across hood since purchased in 2014, ford motor company refused to do anything at that time.

With just over 37,000 miles on the vehicle, i noticed that the paint on the hood was bubbling and flaking off. it had obviously been occurring long before i first noticed it. i brought it to my ford dealer who told me it is a common problem for those vehicles because the hood is made out of aluminum and vibration from driving causes the paint to fracture which results in this problem. he also told me that it was not covered under warranty because i had over 36,000 miles, even though the problem had been there when it still fell under that warranty. i then did some research on the internet and found several sites with an enormous amount of complaints from 2013 and 2014 explorer owners who were having the same problem. (a few examples of the sites i saw are carcomplaints.com, edmunds.com, and rv.net. a google search will provide many more). i then contacted ford motor company directly and spoke to a representative there. they said they were aware of the problem but no recall was going to be issued, and nothing could be done regarding my specific problem. after complaining profusely and having my issue elevated to a regional manager, ford agreed to partially pay for the repair. however, i (along with the many others who are having this problem) feel that this is a manufacturing defect and should be covered fully by ford. while this may not be a "safety" issue, i am hoping that this complaint will at least have someone from your agency look into this matter to see if ford should be forced to recall these vehicles due to this manufacturing defect. after all, a vehicle that is one to two years old should not be deteriorating in this manner. any help or information you can provide is greatly appreciated. thank you! *tr

For the past 2 months the drivers door is saying it is open when it is shut. the dome lights stay on which makes it hard to see at night. the doors will also not lock. that is very unsafe if you have children in the back when driving down the highway. they can easily open the door and possible fall out. i have read multiple complaints on this issue for ford owners. ford should really do a recall on this very dangerous defect.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. the contact stated that the interior door handle in the rear of the vehicle fractured. the contact stated that the door was not able to be opened from inside the vehicle. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v171000 (structure). the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

Paint is bubbling on the front edge of the hood

My mechanic discovered rust bubbles on my hood on or about june of 2015 . it is very awful looking for a vehicle which is only 2 years old and parked where there is no river waters.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while driving 65 mph, exhaust fumes entered the vehicle. the failure recurred six times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer. the technician placed silicone and seal around the bumper and holes and reprogrammed the hvac. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred twice. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 35,000. ma 10/8 updated 11/02/2017*cn

Exhaust is entering the passenger compartment through the front and rear air conditioning vents when the engine is accelerated to 3500 rpm or above. i noticed this condition while driving around town, when passing another car or accelerating to enter the freeway, but the problem was really evident on a recent driving vacation from kansas city to seattle wa. we went through several mountainous states and it was terrible, the car was constantly accelerating above 3500 rpm to maintain speed on up hill grades, the car constantly reeked of exhaust. we had to roll the windows down to keep it aired out. i took the car to my ford dealer when i returned from the trip, they said there is no problem. i am not going to argue with ford over this,i have purchased a carbon monoxide meter which i keep in the car and have recorded carbon monoxide in the cabin as high as 15 ppm during acceleration. this car needs to be recalled,i have read that i am not alone, this problem exists on ford explorers manufactured from 2011 - 2015. why ?

Interior driver and passenger door latches are loose and don't have any resistance on them. because of this the doors can easily be opened with very little effort at any speed. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 15v171000 (structure) however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for recall repair. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the contact had not experienced a failure.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. the contact stated that the third row seat fractured. the vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. the contact was informed that the seat needed to be replaced. the seat was not replaced. the contact also stated that the vehicle experienced a leak by the top of the rear hatch. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the approximate failure mileage was 38,000.

Purchased vehicle from ford dealer as a pre-certified vehicle at delivery found the front edge of the hood had bubbling paint, dealer tried to have ford cover the repair but ford denied the claim due to vehicle being out of warranty by mileage, vehicle is 2 yrs old and only 2200 miles out of warranty by mileage. this is a know issue with to happen with aluminum hoods since 2002 and ford has previous tsb's for older vehicles due to this issue.

Paint bubbling at edge of hood no damage to hood. *tr

The paint on the front edge of the hood started bubbling after about 2 years. after 3 years the paint started coming off. currently there are 3 dime sized spots where the paint has come off exposing the corroded metal hood. it appears the hood was not properly prepped before paint. this is a widespread problem on ford vehicles and should be recalled.

Noticed that my paint is peeling and flaking on inside part of left rear drivers door right to bare metal awaiting to hear what ford is going to do vehicle still under full bumper to bumper warranty. also same door not closing properly also being addressed. *tr

The front hood paint has bubbled and peeled off the front edge. appears to have bubbled in more places, now awaiting even more peeling. obviously a paint defect. although i will enter a date - it's been a constant defect. (speaking with other ford explorer owners - a common complaint.) #2 also, for several years the car driver door sensor (?) light (hence the ceiling lights) stay on (although the ceiling eventually turns off while driving). this indication that the door is ajar / not closed is frequent and often and has been looked at by the ford dealership in virginia several times - with no repair / fix. it is not constant but frequent.

The car's hood has developed rust from the under the clear coat and along the welded seams through out the entire hood of the vehicle. *tr

Paint corrosion/bubbling on edge of aluminum hood. ford will not honor the warranty. cost to fix issue is approximately $500-$750. clearly a manufacturing issue during paint process with thousands of complaints.

The door ajar light (drivers door) indicates on dash and beeps even though the door is closed. interior lights stay on making it hard to see at night. interior lights stay on after leaving vehicle for several minutes thinking the door is open, running down battery. vehicle's alarm system activates continuously as it thinks the door is open. vehicle still under warranty and ford dealer replaced left front door latch assembly part # dg1z-5421813-a. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. the contact stated that the driver's side door sensor failed to function properly, and the internal lighting remained illuminated and drained the battery. the chime sounded each time the failure occurred, which indicated that the door may be open when it was closed. the vehicle was taken to the one dealer twice and the sensors were cleaned. within a year of the first repair, the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer, but the contact was uncertain if the dealer cleaned or replaced the sensor. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact to take the vehicle to the first dealer again and then a second dealer for further diagnostic testing. the contact was waiting for a response from the manufacturer. the vin and failure mileage were not available.

Driving down the freeway and the molding around my windshield just flew off. *tr

On 16 july 2014, i was driving and my vehicle just stopped while i was driving it, ford claims that this is a safety device to protect the transmission, but this is a serious health and safety issue for people and their lives. i could have easily gotten hurt or caused a serious traffic accident if i was on a different road or on the interstate. ford claims that because of the grille design that they have ont he vehicle it causes major issues to the air condensor and transmission cooler, because any and everything...debris, rocks, insects, birds... can cause the condensor/cooler to be damaged which will cause the customer to have to constantly pay out of pocket expenses. this is a major safety concern. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while operating the vehicle, the door ajar sensor light illuminated indicating that the front driver side door was ajar although the door was closed and secured. the contact indicated the dome light would also remain on causing poor visibility when driving in reverse at night. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who replaced the sensor light but the failure eventually recurred. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 20,000. the vin was not available.

Vehicle displays door ajar when drivers door is shut. happens randomly and has now become a regular occurrence. *tr

Paint bubling at hood front edge

2013 ford explorer. consumer writes in regards to vehicle keypad entry system issues. *smd the consumer stated the keypad is enclosed in a plastic casing and opens maybe one out of three tries, which makes it virtually useless as an entry into the vehicle. the dealer admitted there was a problem, but there was no fix.
