Problems with 2013 Ford Explorer FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

On average, the 2013 Ford Explorer starts to “feel” problems with the FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM and its various aspects after 58 134 miles.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. the contact stated that there was a strong odor of fuel inside the vehicle. the contact and his children became ill. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic where it was diagnosed that there was a leak in the fuel pump. the dealer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 70,000.

While driving on highway at 65-70 mph i accelerated to pass another vehicle, and shortly after passing, a strong smell of exhaust fumes or gasoline entered the passenger area. this has occurred several times since purchasing the car new in 2013. i called my ford dealer and was told that a service bulletin has been issued to fix the problem, but since my vehicle is now out of warranty i would have to pay for the fix. after checking on line, this is evidently a wide-spread problem of a safety nature (my wife has asthma) and one that is inherent in many explorers nationally, and if not corrected at ford's expense by a special warranty exception, then the vehicles should be repaired under a safety recall.

Turn signals malfunctioned constantly. problem allegedly caused by faulty installation of both wiring harnesses at factory. both were replaced. second vehicle in our fleet with this problem. vehicle started losing acceleration; problem traced to faulty throttle body. second vehicle in our fleet with this problem.

On aug.3th, 2016 i was driving my ford explorer 2013 on a freeway going aprox. 65miles/hr. at one point a wrench light came on and the vehicles engine quit. i made sure to put my hazard lights on and slowly changed lanes to get out of the way. this was very dangerous as the freeway is under heavy construction so there not much space to pull over safely. i managed to find the "safest" spot and stopped the vehicle. i turned everything off and was about to call for help . i figured i should try and start it up and see if it will move from me instead. once i did this, and i knew that if i gave it some gas the vehicle would go, i took it back home and left it there until i could get it to the mechanics. the mechanic we used said he's seen this quite often and its some type of sensor that gives the engine the fuel it needs to run. unfortunately, the sensor failed. we got it fixed but ford would not cover for this. i understand that the warranty is finished on this vehicle but there is not enough miles on it to warrant this type of fault. the vehicle is only 3 years old too! i was and still am very upset that they will not help us pay for this faulty sensor. i would like to know how to put further action on this problem as i am sure there have been many other fords with the same problem.

Exhaust smell in interior of vehicle. i typically drive with a/c or heat on (seasonally) and always use outside air (no re-circulation). smell is more noticeable when idling at a stop light or otherwise not in motion. have tried two service calls recently with no resolution. an additional related issue is an even stronger fuel smell in my garage. this is more of a pre-combustion smell. the dealer reported that this is normal as a result of the capless gas tank filter system. definitely a health hazard for anyone entering the garage, and the smell gets into the house. these issues have persisted for the past 6-12 months, getting worse over time. to date, the dealer has no resolution for either issue. please help.

On two separate occasions, the car stalled after de-accelerating to a stopped position and made a "clunk" sound from the transmission area. during the first event at a traffic light, a very noticeable "clunk" was heard that sounded like the transmission. the car was re-started and seemed to drive normally. to be on the safe side, we brought the car to the dealership to have it checked but they could find nothing wrong. during the second event at a stop sign, another very noticeable "clunk" was heard from the underside of the car and the car actually shifted so that it was felt by the body. after re-starting the car this time and placing it into drive, this time the car did not move when pressing down on the gas pedal. instead, only the engine revved up. in addition, when putting the gear into the reverse or drive position, that loud "clunk" sound and the physical shifting of the vehicle also happened. because the car would literally not go, we called for a tow-truck and took it to the ford dealership. at the dealership, a customer care rep and a technician came outside to look at the car. when putting the car into reverse and drive, the same "clunk" and shifting of the vehicle was observed and acknowledged by both men. however, at this point the car would move forward when applying the gas. we left the car at the dealership for evaluation. when following up early the next week, ,we were informed that they had driven the car about 100 miles over the course of three trips and the car was running normally. also, we were told that the diagnostic/evaluation of the pcm and transmission did not show anything was wrong. in my opinion, there are two problems here: #1, the stalling/transmission problem and #2, the inability to identify the problem for such a major event

Vehicle emits bad odor upon hard acceleration or any other activity which puts a strain on the engine. dealer deodorized the exhaust system with some perfume like substance which stopped the smell, but probably not the gas, for a while which soon wore off and returned. ford does not claim to know anything about the issue. i'm concerned about carbon monoxide and have thought about putting in a sensor to record the levels. there is something wrong with the exhaust system.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. the contact noticed strong fumes inside the vehicle which caused nausea and headaches. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 35,000. updated 06/02/17*lj

Fuel throttle body error p2111 has happened 5 times in 3 days, causing great distress to me and my family. this is a potentially deadly defect and it seems many others are having the same issue. what occurs is that a wrench appears on screen with the error message "terrain management system fault" and the vehicle goes into "limp mode," even at highway speeds, causing the accelerator pedal to become unresponsive.

When air conditioner auxiliary is on the smell of exhaust or fume is being smelt coming thru the air vents. also i have been experiencing a delay in take off when i press on the gas pedal.

Getting exhaust fumes in the cabin of vehicle at times. sometimes so bad that it makes you sick nauseous and headaches. ford refuses to fix problem under there warranty. it happens at any time slow or at highway speeds when using the ac or heater it is even worse.

While driving approximately 40mph preparing to merge onto freeway i lost acceleration power and vehicle decelerated to 5mph nearly causing accident. after turning car off and back on it resumed normal operation. later that day my wife experienced the same problem. we had vehicle towed to ford dealership and after two days they were prepared to return the vehicle because the problem did not present during the test drives. after refusing to take it back until they figured it out the next day we were told that the throttle body was "bad". 2 days later the vehicle was "fixed" and returned to us. the very next morning we had the same problem with vehicle losing propulsion and decelerating rapidly. after taking it back to the the dealership we were told that the "new" throttle body that was installed was also "bad". after another 2 days we picked up our car and have not had any problems so far.

My 2013 ford explorer v6 engine shuts off while driving down the highway or in town creating a very unsafe driving situation. looking online there is quite a few complaints to the same that the throttle body loses electrical power and shuts down. this has happened twice in 2 days and i no longer drive it until a replacement throttle body can be found. ford made a change to the replacements, but this should be a recall due to the dangerous situations that it causes.

In the spring and summer when driving with my ac on i started getting the worst head akes of my life and was even hospiltised for them and noone could ever figure anything out then in the fall wehn we stoped my head stped hurting and then i took a trip in nov to florida and used the ac almost the whole way back and when i returned home i was put back in the hospital for again a head ake that could not be controlled with yet again no answer to a couse and the only thing i can think or and relate is driving my car and the ac being on sometimes not alsways tho with a exsust smell

I know there is recalls for carbon monoxide exhaust fumes coming into cabin for fords i think mine has this issue

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. the contact stated that the a fuel odor emitted from the vehicle. the failure occurred without warning. the vehicle was previously taken for inspection two weeks prior to the failure; however, the technician did not indicate a failure. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 41,000.

Took vehicle to ford dealer to fix the fuel recall issue. now, about a year later, vehicle is drawing in fuel smell from both the vehicle and everything outside the vehicle. the smell is stronger when the heat is on and also around gas stations. now i'm being told it might be a different problem which will cost me over $800.

This is my third attempt at this. my explorer has the exhaust problem you are seeing in the news. i have tried to work with the dealership, ford directly and now one wants to acknowledged. i have been chasing this for a few years. my kids and i are getting ill and with 100 degree temp and below zero climate we have to use the air. they also have a problem with their outer window pillars where they will come lose and randomly fly off on the freeway. below is my conversation with ford directly who claim this is rare and does not cause safety risk, to see the dealership who needs to take the car apart at my expense to even try and locate the problem.

Vapor canister purge valve inoperative at 72,000 miles causing a miss/ hesitation when vehicle was running. light came on and a loss of power occurred while traveling on the interstate. immediately drove the vehicle to the dealership and this was identified as the vapor canister purge valve. ford decided this was not an emissions component and did not warranty the repair under their 80000 mile emissions warranty even though this is clearly defined as an emissions component by the epa.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while driving various speeds, an exhaust odor emitted inside the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the brakes, wheel bearing, and fuel sending unit needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, a month later, the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer, but the cause of the failure was undetermined. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 35,000.

My problem is that there is a strong gas smell inside car. i have small kids that i drive to school back and forth and i have no warenty.

As reported to ford: what is your vehicle sales or service issue?:vin: ifm5k8d85dga40422 2013 ford explorer - i recently shipped my 2013 ford explorer to azerbaijan where i am serving the u.s. government. i hired a driver who conveyed a problem to me regarding the power steering and sync system. after doing some online research, i became aware of the recall for power steering problems which seem to fit the symptoms related to me. i did not receive any type of notice from ford regarding this serious condition. also, the sync system is buggy. i was informed some time ago of a fuel system recall (i believe). the vehicle has 19,750 miles. a vehicle tire sensor fault has recently displayed. there is a ford dealership in baku azerbaijan where i live. the explorer is part of their product line. please inform me what i can expect from ford to resolve the issues disclosed here either under warranty, recall obligation, or customer care (without expense to me). further, i would appreciate if ford u.s. would coordinate those resolution efforts. what action has your dealer taken to address the issue?:have not contacted dealer. suspect language barriers would complicate resolution efforts. what assistance are you seeking from ford motor company?:coordinate all necessary repairs to be performed by the baku azerbaijan ford dealer. provide a loaner car while vehicle is being repaired. be more proactive in informing customers of potentially serious defects that have resulted in recall. are you the owner of the vehicle :yes vin : ifm5k8d85dga40422 mileage : 19,748 where is your vehicle now : inpossession have you contacted the dealer :no dealer name :ford baku azerbaijan

Under heavy acceleration (i.e. highway on-ramp), a very strong odor (burning rubber, exhaust?) enters the cabin. this happens every time, whether the ac is on or off, recirculating or fresh air. the odor is extremely strong and lasts several minutes. i'm especially concerned for my 3 year old son who is exposed to this.

The exhaust leaks into the car interior when you accelerate quickly. it's a horrible smell, that lingers until you roll down the windows. this issue has been occuring for several years with my vehicle. the dealership in denver told me there was nothing wrong with my car. the ford dealership in dallas wants me to pay out of pocket to fix this issue that they've known about for years. during longer drives, i often get super sleepy and nauseous. this is affecting my health, and my family's health.

During acceleration, there is a noticeable, exhaust smell in the cabin of the vehicle. the smell does not dissipate unless you open the windows or turn the a/c on high to clear the air.

I currently own a 2013 ford explorer that has approximately 51k miles. i've noticed on more than one occasion, that during periods of sustained driving we experience odor of certain gases or fumes. these odors are not constant, but they are present within the cab even while the windows are secure. again, the only experiences of these incidents so far are during periods of driving for 2 or more hours continuously. i've checked with the ford motor company, and searched online and i haven't found any recall information regarding emission problems of this nature. we, our family would appreciate if more research could be done on this matter. we personally believe that may lead to a health related illness/injury. sincereley [xxx] *bf 'information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).' *bf

Extremely bad exhaust fumes in car. brought to ford and was told i had grass in my engine, i said bs. brought back again and was told its under review. making me light headed while i drive. have to drive with my windows down all the time just so my kids don't smell it. seems the longer i drive the worst it gets.

When driving the car, there is a strong odor of gasoline. it began as intermittent and now happens almost every time we drive the car.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while driving approximately 10 mph, the contact noticed strong fuel fumes. the vehicle was taken to fernelius ford lincoln inc (10459 north straits highway, cheboygan, mi 49721, 844 327-8314) for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was not notified. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 70,000.

I smell gas in the car this has been going for a while

Tl*the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. the contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed, there was smoke emitting from the exhaust pipe entering the vehicle. the contact mentioned that two passengers became sick due to the smoke. the vehicle was taken to a dealer. the technician diagnosed that there were seams in the frame that needed to be closed. in addition, the vents needed to be replaced and the air conditioning module needed to be reprogrammed. the vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that more seams needed to be closed and vents replaced. the vehicle was repaired however, the failure persisted. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 14,000.

I've noticed this smell every time i turned my car on/off or would get finished driving. it would be in the drivers cabin down at the floor where it came from. i first noticed it there and had mentioned it to ford when there for service. it smells like a natural gas ( like at home ) leak. i'd smell it if he air or heat was on bringing it into the cabin. the same smell would be present when i stopped driving and would op n the door. smelled like it was coming from under the drivers side wheel area. it persisted for the last few years. i've told ford many times but they say there's no recall. or that my car was out of its manufacturers warranty. at the time in 2014, when i really took notice, my car was still under warranty. i bought my car out of its lease in 6 or7/2016 and there were reports of exhaust issues with people having a smell on the cabin. ironic that i've been complaining of this two years prior to it coming out in the news. when asked, i was unsure to buy a car with exhaust issues, they reassured me there were no active recalls. and that the exhaust wasn't a problem. i thought i had roadkill rotting under my car, but after numerous under carriage car washes and theee years later, the car still has that natural gas smell.

Tl* the contact rented a 2013 ford explorer. the contact stated that while refueling, the fuel leaked to the ground. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician stated that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the failure and current mileage was 34,600.

Upon heavy acceleration i smell a very strong gas smell. it is so bad i have to roll down all windows and air out cabin. it makes me very dizzy to the point of having to pull off road on many occasions. it gives me a headache and at this point i am scared to drive it or have my kids in car. i am scared to pull out in traffic or accelerate very fast because of the smell and i am afraid of what it is doing to me and my family physically with the prolonged exposure. ford says nothing is wrong when i took it to dealership. please help.

The first thing i noticed was that the car felt like it was sputtering and running roughly. when i came to a stop light, it ran really rough and just died. it started back up and i was able to drive it home. not knowing if the problem was just a fluke or not, i drove it the next day. after having gone about 8 miles, it did the same thing again. the engine runs rough and then just dies. it also happened to my husband as he left our neighborhood. it started to die on him but he put it in neutral and gave it gas. he took it to the local lincoln mercury (bayway) on gulf freeway in houston, tx. they kept it for almost 3 days, could not find anything wrong and one of the service managers drove it the last day and it never happened to him so problem was not found. today as i was traveling down the gulf freeway (i-45) service road i slowed down for a light, the car sputtered and died while sitting at the light. the car was hard to start up and i was able to get it going and trying to drive it to mcree ford where i bought it last summer. it stalled and i had to have it towed to dealership. last week when i was driving around in it, the whole a/c system turned off and it started blowing hot air. all the a/c lights had gone out. don't know if that was part of a problem or not. *tr

Purchased 2013 ford explorer with around 33k miles on it. shortly after i had it i noticed gas odor in garage and dismissed it thinking it was lawn mower etc. then over a short time realized the odor must be coming from car and the odor was more evident after i fill up with gas. i looked on line to find out there is a recall on leaky fuel tanks and when i called ford was told my vin # isn't included in the recall. but, i smell gas! the odor was so strong this morning i was scared to start it, not knowing what would happen. i've only had this vehicle 5 months now, purchased used. today i have my car at a dealer/mechanic that confirmed the odor coming from gas tank, they will keep it overnight and check where the leak is coming from. i was told if its from "fuel pump" the manufacture warranty might cover costs if its from the "filler neck" it will not be covered. at this point i would love to get rid of this vehicle. we also had to buy a new ac only 3 months after i purchased the car...long story there too!!! costing me more $ than its worth and i will never buy a ford again! *tr

My vehicle is now at aprox 38,000 miles and this happens frequently upon hard accelerations and steep inclines, the smell of sulfur, rotten egg smell, or hard boiled egg smell (exhaust) this happens even when the a/c is running on recirculate. i purchased this vehicle new and am the original owner. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while the vehicle was on an incline with the accelerator pedal depressed, the odor of carbon monoxide entered through the cabin without warning. while the air conditioner was in recirculation mode, the contact attempted to accelerate past other vehicles and the abnormal odor was noticed. the dealer (ed shults ford-lincoln, 2258 washington st, jamestown, ny, 14701 716-484-0121) was contacted four years ago (one year after purchasing the vehicle) in reference to the abnormal odor. the contact was informed that there was no open recall. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or made aware of the failure. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was approximately 10...updated 09/28/17 * updated 10/27/2017*js

Smell exhaust while driving vehicle and odor is really strong

When accelerating, with engine rpms rising above 3500 rpm exhaust fumes begin to enter the cabin through the ac ducts. odor is present regardless of ventilation mode (recirculation or fresh-air). all attempts at repair, including official tsb bulletin published by the ford motor company (tsb 12-12-4) and inspection by field service engineer, by ford dealership service center personnel have failed. here is a part of a response from ford to my service technician on 10/10/2013 this concern is currently under investigation. when a resolution is available, the dealer will be notified with a tsb, ssm, fsa, or broadcast message." i think this problem exists in every ford explorer manufactured since 2011 to present but consumers either don't know it is happening or they don't know to take it to ford. others with the same complaint on this website: 2011-10545178, 10537052, 10485394, 2012- 10466807, 10458341, 2013 - 10548667, 10547404, 10545106, 10534074, 10531802, 10522939, 10511749, 10503135, 10497684, 10493493, 10472937, 2014 ' 10536610 (so far). one case (10521718) even had to be taken to the hospital because of the carbon monoxide. page 206 of my owners manual states 'warning: if you smell exhaust fumes inside your vehicle, have this checked immediately. do not drive your vehicle if you smell exhaust fumes. carbon monoxide is present in exhaust fumes. take precautions to avoid its dangerous effects.' ford won't do the right thing and buy this vehicle back from me and because i bought the car certified preowned from ford, when it was only 6 months old and 16000 miles, i can't lemon law the vehicle in fl. i have a dead vehicle that i can't drive because i won't risk mine or my family's health, so i'm at my wits end. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. the contact received recall notice nhtsa campaign number: 13v227000 (fuel system) in the mail several months ago and stated the dealer informed her the parts were not available for the repair. the manufacturer was not notified. the contact had not experienced a failure.

Tl- the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. the contact stated when she called to make an appointment she was advised that part needed to remedy the recall was unavailable. there was no time frame available for the part. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the contact has not experienced any failures. the current mileage was 4,200.- ll

I started driving and engine started revving up, took foot out of gas pedal an vehicle continued revving up to 3,000 rpm in slow speed. change transmission to "n" and vehicle continued at 3,000 rpm. changed back to "d" and did not changed, once again change to "n" and back to drive and rpm came down. *tr

There was gasoline leaking out of the fuel module into my garage when i went to get into the explorer to go to work. i also have a gas hot water heater in the garage beside where i park the explorer. i was not aware there was a recall on this until i got it to the dealership. the fumes were extremely strong. i opened the garage door and let the fumes dissipate and drove it to the dealership for repair where i found out no parts are available and won't be until possibly september. i was told that my vehicle is not drivable in its current condition. i am handicapped and have an electric chair carrier on the back of the explorer which i have to use to take my electric chair to work. now, i have no vehicle and have been home for over a week with no vehicle i can drive. i asked ford to swap my explorer for an identical one which was denied. they offered me a 15 passenger van to drive until my vehicle is repaired but i would have to pay the taxes on the rental cost daily until mine is repaired. i can't get a 15 passenger van in my driveway much less my garage! i need my vehicle repaired now or a new vehicle. i can't just drive anything due to my disabilities. in addition, it should not be my responsibility to pay taxes on a rental vehicle until mine is repaired as it is not my fault that ford's fuel modules are defective. i can't afford that cost in addition to my monthly car payment and gas costs. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. the contact stated that the gasoline would disappear when refueling to capacity. she also began to smell gasoline in the vehicle. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 13v227000 (fuel system, gasoline) and the vehicle was taken for repair however, the contact continued to smelled fuel after the repair. the manufacturer was notified and informed her that all of the recalls procedures had been performed accordingly on the vehicle. the approximate failure mileage was 5,200 and the current mileage was 5,800.

I have noticed that my fuel tank is emitting strong hydrocarbon vapors due to the tank being pressurized without a fuel cap. it does not come with a fuel cap. i can see the possibility of these vapors in a closed space possibly causing a fire. i am a retired firefighter and i have seen this numerous times with gas cans left in garages with gas hot water heaters. *tr
