We have classified the 91 complaints from 2013 Ford Explorer about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
On 2 separate occasions the truck loses power while driving. this effects the engine, power steering basically anything that uses power. this has happened while driving 65mph and 35-40mph. one time it happened on a street, the other time was while driving on the highway. this is very dangerous.
Both driver and passenger door lock/latch mechanisms failed showing car door is ajar when door is actually shut. driver door lock actuator failed around 30,000 miles and passenger lock actuator failed around 135000 miles. when driving at night, the interior lights of car cannot be turned off until speed reaches approximately 10 mph. this leads to unsafe driving conditions and limits driver visibility outside of car due to glare.
It's an intermittent problem. the electric power steering goes on and off. it does so while still or even while driving.
Smell of smoke, and tapping noise prior to fire. smoke came from near the center console between driver and passenger seat. fire started. made a complaint prior about smell of smoke and noise.

When i shift it to park. it doesn't recognize it and when you turn of the car. a sign comes up on the dash screen saying 'shift into park'. and it drains your battery because the system is waiting for you to shift it. also you can't use the factory remote start.

This dealing with the my sync (myford touch) . the system will will cause the screen to go black,it also will cause the a/c & heater, navigation, and radio to stop working. this happens while the vehicle is moving. to restore the system you have to pull over and reboot the system by turning off the vehicle. i just recieved a customer satisfaction program alert for ford on 5/25/2019. dealer will not repair because they clam that the program has expired. but i can have the repair done for the cost $1200.00
Vehicle experiencing intermittent engine shut off under all driving conditons which exhibits a serious and dangerous situation when the vehicle abrubtly loses total power while driving. this has recently been an issue in the past two weeks while my wife and kids were driving on the freeway at 70 mph in traffic. vehicle started back up once the ignition was turned completely off and waited a few minutes to start the vehicle back up. this scenario occurred on the freeway, in town driving and while stopped at traffic light. contacted local ford dealership and all they said was to bring it in. i had a mechanic check it out and he was unable to retrieve any engine codes while running an ecu scan. there are several complaints noted online with other ford explorer owners who have attributed it to a "terrain management" fault. this is the same diagnosis my local mechanic came up with. this results in the engine control module to receive a throttle position in the wide open indication causing the vehicle to shut off. the vehicle is currently being operated in oahu, hawaii. i am currently deployed to the middle east so i am very concerned for the safety of my family while this is the only mode of transportation available to them.
The "door ajar" warning continues to appear after driver door is shut. once the car is in motion and comes to a stop, the warning will audibly beep and display a message to shift to park, thus distracting the driver. the warning prevents the dome lights was shutting off until the car is in motion. all of which is a drain on the car battery. issue appears to be a faulty car door sensor. i've cleaned it, but it only offered a temporary fix.
Power steering assist came on as i was driving and lost steering. very dangerous
Power steering assist fault. causing loss of power steering almost causing a accident was able to pull to side of road unable to steer the vehicle. others have had this and some recalled but not all. this recall needs to be extended before someone dies. city street. i can't imagine being on a freeway in phoenix when this happened.
Power steering down. warning massage said 'power steering assist fault' 'service advance trac' 'terrain management system fault'. it is too hard to steer. control module internal failure, codes u3000-49, u3000-96, u3000-71.
Paint bubbling on aluminum surfaces hood and door skins, referred back to dealer who repaints and reoccurs until out of warrantee. steering failure intermittent accutrac control requiring towing and computer reset. can fail while driving resulting in no or difficult steering. multiple times reset no charge. estimate to repair $2500
While driving my vehicle at a slow speed my steering wheel locked up.
When turning on the vehicle a system error comes up 'power steering assist failer' and 'auto traction system needs servicing'and my traction control and abs lights tinted in as well. i've tried turning my vehicle in and off again and even trying to move the vehicle and i have no power steering at all. there was a factory recall for my make and year model vehicle in 2014 but i do not know if it was corrected as i lurched the vehicle used from a ford dealer in 2017.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. during inclement weather (heavy rain), water affected the electronic components in the vehicle. bowditch ford (757-595-2211, located at 11291 jefferson ave, newport news, va 23601) kept the vehicle for several days for diagnostic testing. the dealer did not provide an update on the status and the vehicle was not repaired. a second dealer (hall ford newport news, (877) 398-2216, located at 12896 jefferson ave, newport news, va 23608) diagnosed that the water short circuited the switches and the sun roof motor failed and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 120,000.
I have had intermittent power steering loss. at low speed, i received a power steering fault and lost all power steering in the vehicle while making a turn. luckily i was not driving at high speed with family in car.
I have a door ajar light that will not turn off first it was just the driver side now it is affecting both the driver side and passenger side. the doors will not lock when in motion and the interior lights will not turn off.
Power steering does not work at times on start up. could go out at high rate of speed and cause an accident. should be a recall
My explorer has an issue when stopped and in drive with the ac on the car pulls/lunges foward as if i hit the gas/ also when im parked and the air con is running at some point the engine goes down below 500 rpms then kicks up to 700 to compensate then kicks down to below 500 , over and over again. if rev the engine a bit, then it goes back down to normal idle and its fine for maybe 10 minutes then does it all over again. this can be a safety issue as the car pulls itself foward with no human interaction. there is multiple websites declaring this is a known issue for this car. google 2013 explorer rough ac idle you will see lots of people commenting on it.
Warning that car needs to be shifted into park. alarm dings even when car is in park. display does not indicate car is in park . car is stationary position in parking lot and engine is on.
So, it was -17 degrees the other day in minnesota and we packed our car to leave town. went to start the vehicle and the power steering assist fault light came on. along with service adv. trac failure and terrain management system fault. this is not the first time it has happened, it has happened three or four times. except usually we can shut the car off and then restart it and "walla" it works fine. except this time:( (sad face)! i was a little worried about driving it to the ford dealer in order to have it checked out however life goes on (i'm ex military). the wife drove the f350 i drove the explorer. we "fist bumped" she wished me luck and we drove 12 miles without killing anyone. yippee . $47.48 later they told me the computer is reading bla bla bla.. dollar signs are going through my head. ($1910.42) is the estimate. hmmm... im thinking maybe there is a recall on this. i found the recall!!! so i thought! my car was a few months to new??? (what the) well, that doesn't make sense or (cents) (it does for ford) i contact the nhtsa and ford to see if there is anything that can be done so i dont have to pay for this out of my pocket. i explained the problem to the ford consumer and told her that we need to drive this car if ford cant resolve the issue. the girl on the other end bless her heart, told me we will just have to drive it the way it is. what??? i don"t think she understood the problem at hand! what if the steering kicks in at 60 miles an hour? (umm not good)!!! im hoping ford reads this blog and understands the problem. please give me strength to drive this car and the reflexes it may take to avoid an accident. thanks for nothing at the moment ford. i do believe in you!!
Driving at 55mph on a highway my ford explorer sport 2013 completely shut off and a amber wrench came on along with 2 more warnings (terrain management system fault and service traction system light). i was able to pull over and restart the vehicle, but it did it 2-3 times the same night. luckily i was able to get it to the dealership the same day without causing an accident. i can't imagine what would of happened on a interstate at a higher speed.
I found cracks in the door jam of the rear liftgate on the driver's side of the vehicle. following this discovery i found floor boards soaked in water, water dripping down my 3rd row seat belt onto the floor boards and into the spare tire well. following this my moonroof quit working. then i received a letter regarding emissions entering the back of the vehicle and causing people to pass out and wreck their vehicles. took the car to ford and the ford dealership won't cover the cracks in the non wrecked vehicle under the emissions warranty because they state they are unrelated. if water is getting into the back of the car through a crack then emissions probably are too.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled and the steering wheel seized without warning. prior to the failure, the steering wheel seized on other occasions. the vehicle was towed to packey webb ford (1815 ogden ave, downers grove, il 60515, (630) 598-4700) where it was diagnosed that the power steering failed and the steering rack needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact stated that the vehicle was exhibiting the same symptoms as listed in nhtsa campaign number 14v286000 (steering). the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 77,754.
Received warning light when i started my car which would stay on while driving which was diagnosed as an electrical problem. it was caused by battery acid leaking which required that i pay out of pocket to have the battery harness replaced. i was told by the dealership that the problem could have caused the engine to shut down completely as the electrical system would have gone out completely, in time.
While driving, my car's power steering and advance service trac will go out and i will have to drive without power steering until i can park and restart the vehicle. this has left me very at risk for an accident when driving due to the sudden jerk of the wheel when cornering or just going straight even.
Keypad failed. 16 month old daughter was accidentally locked in stationary car while keys remained inside. the keypad, which worked previously, failed to work. the situation was so dire (as it was over 90 degrees that day) that police were called to break the window. the car was taken to local ford dealership for examination and determined that the keypad did in fact need to be replaced. huge safety hazard as the car cannot be unlocked if accidentally locked with keys remaining inside. keypad is the only option...we were in disbelief that it failed and want other ford explorer owners to be made aware of a possible keypad failure issue so that this doesn't happen to anyone else.
Driver door ajar sensor remains on even though door is securely closed, even on repeat attempts to close the door. this causes the doors not to lock and allows doors to be opened even when car is in motion.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. when the contact started the vehicle, the power steering assist warning indicator illuminated and the steering wheel seized. the contact stated that the failure previously occurred while accelerating after being parked. when the contact turned off and restarted the vehicle, it reset itself. the local dealer was not contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and stated that they were aware of the failure. the manufacturer further stated that the vin was excluded from nhtsa campaign number: 14v286000 (steering). the manufacturer stated that the repair would be an out of pocket expense and, if the recall becomes extended and the vin becomes included, the contact could possibly be reimbursed. the failure mileage was approximately 57,000.
Randomly honks with and with fob in or near car and without the car running. check engine light comes on after getting fuel, and sometimes it does not stop the gas when pumping.... send a code for sensor in fuel compartment.... door panels crack
Having a issue headlights going off. mostly one bub at a time but not always the same bub or both buds go off but always turn back on once i place switch back in off position and turn them back on. after being pulled over by locat shierff is when i first noticed the issue for my headlight being out. trouble had gotten worst of time. i spoke to a local state trooper and i was told that it is known issue with newer ford headlights. i went dealership and i explained to them it seem like a electrical power issue. i was that the harness over time gets moisture in it and had to grease to keep it from happening. he said it will be over $1000 to get it fix with the symptoms i provided him. on long straight trip at a stead speed the light do not go out, but driving around town it happens now on a regular.
Door ajar is on even when the door is close and alarm for this keeps going off also the inside front interior lights stay on.this in on going had it fix once and now its back again.with 24,000 miles and thousands with the same problem this should be a recall this happens when you shut vehicle off and when driving.
I stopped for gas on a long drive. when i got back into the vehicle and started it no sound would come out of the speakers. all the stations were working just no sound at all.
Takata recall i purchased a 2013 ford explorer new with 6 miles i currently have 59900 miles and driving on the highway my drivers side windshield trim flew off by itself without any damage. thankfully did not cause an accident we only heard it flew off we didn't know it had until we stopped, and noticed this to it it still has the original windshield and i took to rich ford where i bought the car and was told it came unglued ! i have never had this issue before and have owned several pre-owned cares without anything like this happening my car interior has cracked at the seam again this is a 4 yr year old car with no other damage i just have a little tear on the driver side door where the door handel is. i have had the locks on the passenger door fixed twice it stops working due to mechanical error you have to manually lock and unlock it this is very unsafe as we know that are cars need to be locked in motion and when we park. this i have 2 separate invoice for fixed at quick lanes at rich ford in albuq,nm none of these issues have recalls on them
The "door ajar" sensor on many ford products is defective and causes the door ajar light to come on even when the doors are closed. this also causes the interior dome lights to remain on at night and will not allow the doors to be locked while operating the vehicle. it is dangerous not being able to lock the doors as children could open the doors accidentally and fall out. it is also dangerous having the interior dome lights remain on while driving at night. ford knows about this problem as when i took the vehicle in for repairs, they acknowledged a service bulletin is available about the problem. because of the safety issues involved, there should be a recall on the door ajar. battery drains quickly after getting new on within a year. brakes also continues squeaks after getting them fixed.
Passenger door ajar light remains illuminated when the door is closed. interior lights remain on even at night causing hazardous driving conditions
Door ajar warning during closed doors. after research on internet for a solution, seems, that this is on going issue with ford door latch locks.
Suv will indicate door is open when is not,due to faulty door latch.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford explorer. while making left or right turns, the steering wheel seized and the vehicle stalled. the contact was able to restart the vehicle. the dealer was notified and scheduled an appointment to inspect and diagnose the vehicle. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 72,000.
I was driving my 2013 ford explorer when i went to make a turn and the wheel froze without warning. the electronic power steering failed and i was told i needed to replace the steering rack and it was not covered under warranty.
The passenger side seat belt in the second row refused to latch while the vehicle was stationary or in motion. the dealership stated that it was not covered under our warranty. the sun/moon roof has leaked on several occasions causing me to pay out of pocket for repairs. the repair shop indicated that we should blow air into the tubes to keep them clear even though we always park in the garage and at work there are no trees around the parking lot to have anything be able to get into the drain tubes. i have owned several vehicles with sun roofs and never had them leak or need to be blown out even when they were stored 100%v outside. again not covered by warranty even though we had less than 40k miles and a ford certified pre-owned warranty. this is a bad design and should be a recall. the sun roof was stuck open on 3 occasions. the driver side window trim pillar flew off when i was driving down the highway. i was told that it was not covered by warranty and had to pay out of pocket to have it replaced at the dealership. it is now coming loose again and i do not expect it to last much longer with how loose it is. it is a danger to anyone driving behind me as it could fly off and cause an accident. this is a bad design and should be a recall. these events happened over multiple dates but we were not aware of a way to complain about all of these problems as we were told they were not covered under the warranty.
While driving my explorer will lose all power after 30-45 minutes it will restart and run fine for a day or so and then happen again. when it loses power all of the warnings will appear and the radio will still work. when i restart the vehicle it takes a minute for the engine to turn over. this is very scary and dangerous when i am driving down the highway at 70 mph. i see there have been many complaints about this but no recall! this has also happened while driving a both 35-40 mph on city streets and has happened a total of about six times. *tr

Door ajar light comes on randomly in my pi explorer. it goes away after a while. it comes on while in motion and while still. may be a faulty sensor in the door. this needs a recall. looked high and low for a fix and noticed that many have this issue. most people with this issue probably don't even know to post this information/issue here. this problem could potentially be a very serious one if not addressed/recalled.
Driver door shows door ajar a majority of the time when door is closed. issue was resolved once under warranty and is now happening again.
