The vehicle was being driven and had only been started and moving for less than 5 minutes. noticed that windshield wipers would not shut off or change speeds, then noticed a slight odor in car that increasingly strengthened. phoned my husband while at a stop light, odor of something burning became much stronger, then noticed smoke coming between the the drivers side hood seam and between the hood and the windshield, this was immediately followed by noticable flame. i put the vehicle in park, turned on hazard lights and exited the vehicle. local police and fire department responded, began with small fire extinguishers, without success and fire department opened hood and applied water to extinguish. this was on a city street in o'fallon, mo. uncertain of cause, but am now aware that ford issued a recall on this model (recall 17s09) and believe this could be a possibility.

During my last oil change, 12/23/2019, i was told the technician told he could not re-attach my "splash shield" due excessive rust where the shield fasteners are supposed to hold the shield in place. approximately 10 screws cannot be re-installed due to rust. this shield if re-attached could have fallen off during operation causing unknown multiple issues including causing a crash. my problem occurred during an oil change, so i was stationary in the oil change shop.
Vehicle had recall work done regarding for handles, since then i have experienced not stop issues with drivers door handle getting stuck in open position which causes the door not to securely latch closed. i have brought the vehicle back and was told it's just a lubrication issue.
Both rear doors on my 2014 ford escape suddenly stopped opening either from the inside or the outside thereby trapping the people in the back seat without a way to exit the car. this happened suddenly. yesterday the doors worked fine then today broken. nothing changed with the vehicle....no accidents or abuse of any kind. car was located in my driveway.
I filed a complaint sometime last week about my car having coolant leaks and overheating due to this leak. well i took my car to the shop and was out 400 dollars to fix this. the shop ended up having to order two of the same parts because they were all faulty. a week later my car is fixed. worked for 2 days and the part that came directly from ford was faulty again. car almost blew up on the highways because coolant was leaking everywhere. there was literally none in my car. when is this going to become important enough to fix? when the engine is completely ruined? i was driving down the highway today and all the lights on my dash came on saying engine temp dangerously high. turn engine off immediately but by this point i was already smoking out the hood, it smelled like coolant inside my car, i pull over and get out and i see my tired are soaked, the whole sidewalk up under me was puddled, my engine was covered in coolant. i had to have it towed.
