We have classified the 88 complaints from 2011 Ford Escape about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
I could've [xxx] died. i was on a busy highway when my car died like the battery was died but the battery was fine and i had gas. i took my ford escape into the dealership to see what the problem was. my suv needed something to do with the throttle. im not very happy that i will need to pay 600 dollar to fix something that others with a ford escape are having the same problem. ford needs to recall the ford escapes asap or give people a refund or discount or your company will lose alot of customers because ford wont take responsibility for this. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
I was driving to work in the morning and my escape stalled while going through a four way intersection. i thought that this may have been an isolated incident so i continued driving. i then noticed while i was in traffic that the engine would shutter and not idle normally. it stalled again the next day. i took it to the ford dealership in the city where i live with the check engine light on, they tested it and then the light reset itself?? they took it on a test drive and nothing happened with them while they were driving so they said that there was nothing that they could do. my car is shutting off while i am in trafic and driving, this is a serious safety issue. i have been blessed that the brakes work on the cars that drive around me or else i would have been in a serious accident on more than one occasion this week!!! please recall these cars and get them fixed before someone dies!!!!
At 55 mph our 2011 ford escape lost all power with no warning at all. had to push it out of the middle of the highway. throttle control/powertrain light came on. turned ignition completely off and restarted the engine, light went out and ran fine. going in for service asap. *jb
I was pulling out of the doctor's office with my wife and newborn child and as i pulled out (i had plenty of safe distance if my car were functioning properly) my car all of a sudden lost any acceleration capabilities and the rpm's dropped extremely low. the speed limit on the road was 55 and it started when i got to 30mph making it so the traffic already on the road ran up right behind me and nearly hit me. i was helpless and could not go any faster. this is an extremely dangerous defect, even though the car never lost complete power i lost all control to accelerate and continued to slow with fast traffic all around me. i am lucky that it did not result in an accident or any injuries to myself, family, or other motor vehicle operators. i took my escape to the closest ford dealership who informed me that the electronic throttle body had failed. it was not very comforting when he knew exactly what was going on when i told him what happened because he had seen this same situation so many times. i cannot believe that there is not a recall on this manufacturer defect and i hope it does not result in any accidents or worse. *tr
On four separate occasions, while accelerating the throttle gave out. the vehicle had no power to move forward, except what was left from the original speed. on one of theses occasions, i was on a major highway in the dc area when the throttle gave out. i turned on my hazards and pulled over. thankfully the cars behind me had enough room not to crash into me. i then turned off the car. once restarted, it seemed to stall a bit and then drove normally until the next incident. there have been 4 incidents within 5 days, all seeming to happen at random. the "wrench" flashes once the throttle goes out, but then doesn't appear once the car is back on and everything seems normal. ford has given me problems, saying this falls outside my warranty and i may have to pay for the repair myself. they also wont see me for a week, when this merits immediate attention. i just bought this vehicle in march 2013, after this problem had already been reported by thousands of existing owners. had i know about this problem, i would not have purchased this vehicle because it is so unsafe. *tr
While driving on an expressway around 35-40mph, vehicle experienced a sudden loss of power and went into limp mode (less than 1000rpm) with a wrench indicator illuminated on the dashboard. pulled over, shut down vehicle and then restarted engine. vehicle was driven home and taken to the dealership the next day. ford diagnosed and is replacing the throttle body under powertrain warranty. *tr
Vehicle shuts down or does not respond to accelerator. you turn it off wait a few minutes, start it again and it gets moving. problem occurred twice in one day. 10 days later the problem re-emerged three times.
The car went into limp mode while driving... gas pedal would not do anything until i pulled over and restarted. wrench light and check engine come on, but go off after car is restarted. took to dealer today after about 6 occurrences in the past month. it seems to be happening more frequently.
Was driving on highway at 55 mph, the wrench light came on dashboard and the car started decelerating. would not accelerate, had to pull over, turn car off, then back on, in order for car to accelerate again. second incident seemed like car's power completely shut off and would not come back on again after a rough idling stop. *tr
We had our 2011 escape in the dealership 2 times due to it completely shutting down while driving before they could figure out that is was a failed throttle body (electrical issue). they told us it was "bad gas" every other time. we had our infant in the vehicle when it shut down on the freeway and scared the crap out of us. thankfully we were able to get away from other vehicles and make an emergency exit from the freeway onto the shoulder until the vehicle came to a stop. its extremely dangerous and ford needs to address this and create a recall. i have done research to find so many others with the same exact issue. our vehicle is in the shop as we speak to the tune of a $500 fix and i just got off the line with ford customer service to demand a reimbursement. i am waiting to hear back from them to see if they will work with us on the cost. our vehicle only has 44k miles on it and we had it serviced before the warranty expired and were told everything was fine. we also had it in for service other times for this issue. *tr
I was traveling 60 mph on the highway when the vehicle lost power, i had to coast over to the side of the road, turn off the vehicle and turn it back on. the vehicle would start but then return to idle with no throttle response. this went on repeatedly before i had to have it towed to a dealership. because this occurred on a saturday afternoon the service department was closed and i was unable to speak to anyone. first thing monday morning when i went in they first told me they did not know about the problems with the throttle control unit. upon presenting them with numerous copies of complaints filed on line they finally acknowledged that there was a problem. however with no recall i would need to pay for a replacement which with towing resulted in a $550.00 bill. apparently i was very lucky that there was one replacement in stock (hmmm), otherwise it would be weeks. i hope the replacement works because it has been a chronic problem for months. skeptical to say the least. *tr
I was driving on an interstate at approximately 75 mph, when the engine of my 2011 ford escape seemingly shut down. the gas pedal stopped working. a small golden wrench icon lit up to the left of the rpm gauge. i pulled over and as i slowed, the car jerked. i turned the car off; took out the keys and waited a few minutes. the engine had a little extra trouble to restart; but it did within 30 seconds. two days later, a diagnostics test at my ford dealership showed the throttle body needed to be replaced; but i was told the part was on a national back order. the same incident repeatedly happened for a total of about 10 times, before the part was at the dealership and able to be replaced. the part was replaced more than two weeks after the diagnostics test and initial incident. *tr
I was driving and the vehicle stalled. i turned the engine off and restarted it drove fine almost a week later it happened again maybe 3 miles from my home i turned engine off and restarted drove about 1 mile and it done it again and picture of a wrench came on instrument panel i drove about 1 mile again and stalled again. i started vehicle again and the check engine light was on and i made it to my driveway. had vehicle towed to ford dealership and the called and said it is the electronic throttle body and would be a few days because they have to order the part and it will be $349.00. i was surfing the web to see what the part was when i say this page about others having the same problem. *tr
I was driving home on the highway during rush hour. a yellow wrench light began flashing on the lower left side of the dashboard. i felt the engine lose power and saw that the car was decelerating. i pressed on the gas pedal with no effect. i signaled and moved over to the shoulder of the road. approximately 10 feet after i reached the shoulder, the car stopped moving forward and stalled. i turned it off, let it sit for a few minutes and attempted to turn it on again. the engine would not turn over. i called and had the car towed to the ford dealership. in speaking to the mechanic the next day, he told me e problem was a failed throttle body and would need to be replaced. this dealership was back ordered for the part as 5 other ford vehicles were awaiting a new throttle body. upon researching this issue, i realized that my vehicle also experienced a "lurching forward" which was likely also related to the throttle body. this lurching had been going on for several months at intermittent times. *tr
I was driving down the road at 40 mph and my vehicle just quit running (lost power) and i had to pull over to the side of the road. the engine light came on when this happened, it looked like a wrench figure on the dash. after letting my escape sit for about 30 seconds,it started right up. after it started, i put it in drive and proceeded to go down the road and after about two miles, my vehicle quit running again. after a few seconds of sitting, i started it up again and managed to get into a ford dealership and they said the problem was a throttle problem and replaced the part which cost me $342.00. the dealership said this had been a problem with many escapes and said this part may be on the verge of a recall. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford edge. the contact stated while attempting to accelerate, the transmission slipped and the vehicle jerked. the vehicle was placed in park and the traction sensor warning light illuminated. in addition, the contact stated that after closing the driver's side door, the door ajar warning light remained illuminated. as a result, the overhead light stayed illuminated causing the battery to lose power. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer for a diagnostic test. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 18,500. the current mileage was 19,000.
My 2011 ford escape has gone into limp mode while in motion three times this month, july 2013. my local ford dealership diagnosed the problem as a malfunctioning throttle body. *tr
Vehicle went into stall while traveling off of exit ramp. have read that this is being investigated and needs to be recalled! dangerous and felt unsafe with my child in vehicle! if this happened at a high speed on hwy, it could lead to a crash and injury or even death! *tr
I was traveling and suddenly lost power or throttle control. the car started stumbling and i had no power as i pushed on accelerator. the wrench symbol came on my control panel. *tr
While driving on the expressway crg g5 at 45mph the engine stalled, with no more power supplied to the car and it rolled to a full stop. the electronic throttle did not operate to accelerate or drive the car any more. the vehicle had to be towed away. the check-engine light and 'wrench' light are on, the associated dtc code is p2112. *tr
I am a single female and keep my vehicle maintenance up to date. i do not have anyone to call on to help in times of car trouble. the engine would lose power and start to 'coast' to a stop at varying speeds, including on an interstate. i had to pull the car over, turn it off, and restart. the restart was always troublesome. once the dealership looked at the car, i was told i would have to wait at least 2 weeks for a replacement part. i had to deal with this issue for 2 weeks, putting myself and any passenger in danger of being involved in and causing a major car accident. i called the dealer 2 weeks later; the dealer did not contact me. i picked up the part and had it installed. i also purchased a cabin air filter in order to have that replaced at the same time. to my surprise, the car did not even have a cabin air filter installed when i purchased the new vehicle. i have never had that filter replaced. i have severe allergies and currently take 2 shots. i was not happy to discover the air entering my car was helping to contribute to my problems with my allergies. i will not purchase another ford. their customer service does not promote repeat customers. ford does not stand behind their vehicles and are not concerned with the safety of their customers. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle stalled. the contact merged to the shoulder of the road and was able to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis however, the mechanic was unable to diagnose the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 40,000. *tr
First issue is that the back back door wont open & there is no keyhole to unlock it either. second issue is that when it rains heavy water is coming through from the outside into all my doors & it stays there because there is no plug to let the water out. the cheapest option was to drill holes in the bottom of each door to let the water out.
My 2011 ford escape stalls at highway speed. this is a known issue to ford, and the part was on back order because of all of the other defective escapes. although the part was said to have been replaced, the stalling has continued. my ford dealer refuses to do further repairs, even though the truck is very dangerous to drive. the problem is with the throttle body for this model. here is a video that someone else posted on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rvghyxvgu4
I was driving up a hill when my engine shut off and car started lurching forward. the brakes slowed the car down but lurching continued. the car restarted okay but stalled several more times as i was driving it to the dealer. there were no warning lights on and i have always taken great care of the car. there were no odd noises or signs that something was wrong until the car stopped. i am thankful that i was on a neighborhood road and not a busy street or highway. dealer says the issue is the electronic throttle body which is on national backorder and may take 6-8 weeks to repair. if something is on national backorder, does that mean this is happening to others as well? please investigate. *tr
I was driving home from work at about 35 mph when the car lost power. it stayed running and i turned on my flashers and coasted to the first turn. i turned off the main rd and parked, shut off the car, then started it back up and it worked fine the rest of the way home. a few days later it did it again so i called the local ford garage, on a saturday morning. the service man on duty told me " this time of year there are fuzzies from the trees flying around, the get stuck in your air filter and when you turn the car off and start it again the fuzzies get sucked in the engine and the car is fine. he said he knows this has happened and what i described happened to my car sounds like this. he said if it happens again to call back". i said "are you kidding me?". it happened again so i called back, got an answering machine and left a message. no one called me back, and the car stopped doing this. two weeks later it lost power twice in one day, once on the interstate which was scary, then twice more on my 3 mile drive to work in the morning. i had my son look at the air filter, he said it looked fine and nothing should get through it and to take it to the garage. i took it to the ford garage, they said it needs an electronic throttle body and will cost $420, that is the estimate. the car has been at the ford garage for 6 days now. they don't have the part because it is on backorder. they did give me a loaner car at no cost, which i appreciate. *tr
While driving the vehicle it started jolting and sounding as if the vehicle was dying or out of gas(i had a 3/4 tank). i shuttered to a stop and died while i was on the highway. i went to start it again and it rolled over for 20 sec and then stared. i put it in drive and it immediately bogged down and died. al my check engine lights came on and i called my husband to come help me. when he got there he was able to start it up and get it off the road and into a parking lot before it shuttered and did again. had it towed and this morning they call me and tell me it is the electronic throttle body. they said it is not covered under warranty and is on back order for weeks. i did some research and found out hundreds of people are having this problem too. this needs to be a recalled as it is dangerous problem. *tr
On may 23rd we were traveling on an interstate at about 65mph and suddenly the car lost acceleration, we were able to pull over to side of road and luckily able to avoid other cars. we turned off engine and it started again but was very apprehensive. the car did ok until july 20th when we stopped at a light and when we started the acceleration was gone again, we were able to get to side of road but it took 3 tries to get it started again. we tried to get home before it happened again but about 2 miles from our home it died again. we were on a 2 lane road but was able to pull into someone's driveway and it took several times to get it started and we tried to get back on road but it died again. after a couple more tries it started and we were able to make it home. we had to call a tow truck to take it to the dealer because we were afraid it would happen again and could have had an accident. we have only had the car for 2 yrs and it only has around 38000 miles. *tr
I was idling at a stand-still on the highway (or very close to a stand-still - may have been rolling at approx. 5 miles per hour) as traffic came to a stop due to a lane merge ahead. when traffic started to slowly move forward again, i took my foot off the brake and stepped on the gas pedal to accelerate forward but the car did not move. i tried stepping on the gas pedal once more and again the car would not move forward. since the car was still in drive gear, i managed to get the car to roll into the shoulder of the road on its own to get out of the way of traffic. car started to buck and vibrate when i tried using the gas pedal again to accelerate forward in the shoulder and would still not move forward. i noticed then that the orange wrench icon was lit up on the dash. i then put the car in park and turned the engine off as i felt it was no longer safe to drive. had to call a tow truck to tow the vehicle to the dealership. dealership diagnosed the problem as an issue with the throttle body and said it was not covered under warranty as it was an electronic/external part. had bought the car brand new in dec 2010. i was disappointed that the car was less than 2 1/2 years old and had a major problem that could have led to a dangerous situation. i was moving slowly in a construction zone during holiday traffic when the incident occurred, and i was lucky that i was not in a busy intersection or traveling at a high rate of speed when i lost acceleration due to the throttle body problem. *tr
Vehicle purchased january 2013 with ~37k miles. first month of ownership, i had code indicating a fuel delivery problem but it cleared on its own. i attributed it to bad gas, though it may have been the warning sign i missed. today on the highway at approximately 60mph, it felt like the vehicle shifted out of sequence, noticing the lack of power/low rpms i tried to give it gas to no avail. i safely navigated to the shoulder as it coasted down to a stop. the orange wrench lit up. upon stopping the car sputtered hard and threatened to stall. the gas pedal was useless. i shut the car off, shut off the radio/ac and gave it a moment. it restarted with minor hesitation. the orange wrench had cleared but the check engine light came in (it stayed in through the remainder of this post). it idled ok, allowed me to administer fuel and rev the engine. thinking the problem had passed, i merged back onto the highway and came up to speed. about a half a mile later i felt the noted loss of engine power (i believe this is the "limp-home" method that is cited in some things i have read today). again, my gas pedal is useless and i re-engage the hazards and move off of the road. this time the car does not stall but idles around 900rpm with some sputtering. gas pedal is still useless. i rinse and repeat the above process a third time, when it does the same thing another half mile later, i give up and call a more car savoy friend. his first guess is also fuel pump/something clogged but we are both baffled because the symptoms are not consistent with any condition we have ever encountered. deciding it could be nursed home, the fourth attempt at starting it, i made the last 2 miles staying 40mph or below. there was no sputtering/loss of fuel delivery capabilities during this attempt. after some research, it sounds like the common throttle body issues found me... *tr
At approx. 19,800 miles was driving along the interstate and the escape started losing power. i went from running 75 mph to 40 mph. the escape now has approx. 33,000 miles and is a total nightmare. as of april 28, 2013 it has been in the shop for a total of 46 days and has had 8 repair attempts. no warning lights nor the check engine light has ever come on. this escape clunks, surges, loses power, cut's off and at times will not even crank. the transmissions has been reprogrammed, the throttle body and motor asy - throttle body air intake has been replaced, the vapor management valve has been replaced, the torque convertor has been replaced. lost in arbitration with the bbb because ford said in their last repair attempt that the vehicle has operating as normal. june 5, 2013 car was back in shop because at 7:45 am stopped at a red light, while my foot was on the brake the rpm's surged up to 4000, could hardly keep it from running the light, once the light changed took off and within 4 tenths of a mile lost power and shut off. it took me 8 minutes to get it to crank, drove about 15 miles, surging all the way, and the car died again, taking me 10 minutes to get it to crank. took the car back to the shop, they kept it for 7 days, returned it and said they could not duplicate problem. june 20, 2013 tried to crank the car at 10:00 am, it would crank, but go dead, finally at 11:10 am it stayed cranked, drove at 3 tenths of a mile, car goes dead. takes me 5 minutes to re-crank went straight to the shop. this car is dangerous and ford needs to re-call.
From the time we bought this vehicle, the horn would sound when we hit a bump. then it began to fail and not sound at all. i had the service department at the dealership look at it. they said it would cost $500 to repair and there had been no recall. when we picked up our vehicle from the dealer, the horn would not sound at all. it has not sounded since. *tr
Vehicle was running rough at idle and check engine light was on. at stop lights, stop signs, or any idle time car would buck forward like it was going to stall. *tr
While pulling onto highway onramp the vehicle began to jerk violently and suddenly shut down and would not accelerate. it was a busy traffic time and the sudden deceleration of my vehicle caused others to have to suddenly brake to avoid a collision. pulled vehicle to side of the road and shut it off. restarted and the problem seemed to be fixed. began driving vehicle to dealer with hazard lights and problem occurred about 4 more times. dealer replaced throttle body assembly, which fixed the problem. it was a scary incident as we were just seconds away from joining heavy traffic on the interstate. *tr
As i was pulling away from the intersection, i lost all throttle. i had no power at all, it wanted to stall and i had nowhere to pull over from the inside lane. the driver behind me almost rear ended me. i had to stop in the middle of traffic with my hazard lights on. this is a serious safety issue, this should not happen on a new vehicle that has only 36,000 miles. *tr
This has happened twice. once on 7/27 and again today, 8/6. while driving on the interstate coming down off an overpass with the air on the car suddenly stalled. both times i was able to restart from the side of the road. *tr
While traveling 80mph on the interstate, my 2011 ford escape with 27000 miles suddenly lost power as a wrench indicator light came on the dashboard. the gas pedal would not accelerate to pull onto shoulder or to move around traffic. all fuel acceleration was lost. as i finally coasted to the shoulder, narrowly avoiding being the cause of multiple accidents, the vehicle starting shaking. i turned the car off, waited a few minutes, and turned the car back on. the wrench indicator light (powertrain indication) remained off and the vehicle acted normal. there was not an indication before or after the incident of any faulty systems or parts. the vehicle did this without any reason, leaving me in a dangerous situation. the vehicle has been properly maintained and running without any problems since i purchased the vehicle until this incident. i fear it may happen again without reason and place my life and those of my passengers in harms' way. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford escape. the contact stated the vehicle stalled several times without warning. the dealer replaced the throttle body which corrected the failure. the air conditioning system recently failed and would blow hot air. the dealer inspected the vehicle and was unable to locate the cause of failure. the air conditioning system was not repaired. the failure mileage was 18,000 and the current mileage was 30,000.
As i was exiting a highway, my car message center alerted me to safely come to a stop. as i was attempting to get into a parking lot, the car shut off. i restarted and was able to get into parking lot on electric, i guess. it was towed to utter ford, in sherman, tx. they ran a diagnostic and told me it had to do with the fuel pump and the electrical. they kept it overnight and said they replaced the fuel pump. i picked it up on 12/3 around 2:30pm. i got 40 miles and the car went into fail/safe mode again. i was able to make it safely to a parking lot. after the engine was turned off and then back on, the accelerator stuck. hitting the break did not help. the car had to be turned off to keep the engine from revving. it was towed to david mcdavid lincoln in plano, texas. the service tech said that there was nothing registering on the diagnostic. on their second test drive, the car turned off while the driver was on the highway. they had to send a tow truck to get him. the car would not restart. *tr
Rear windshield exploded when my colleague was putting his belongings in the back of my suv. brand new car and the the car wasn't turned for more than 5 minutes. *tr
After stopping and upon acceleration the engine completely shuts down and the car stalls. after putting the car in park and restarting the car, it runs okay. this has happened to me 4 times over a 23 month period. each time i have taken the vehicle to the dealership. the first two times i was told the car was still breaking in and it must be due to the gas i was using. the third time, they replaced the throttle body. to my knowledge the "wrench" light only came on once. they said they had a number of vehicles that this had happened with and replacing the throttle body helped. three weeks after they replaced the throttle body, it happened again! this time only the engine light came on. ford says they need a code to try to fix the problem. the dealership told me that there was one other person, who has the same make and model as mine that this is happening too. this person also had the throttle body replaced. the fact that no code is tripped is a problem in itself! please help! i do not want anyone to be killed because of this problem. *tr
