I was driving along a road and suddenly my car jolted and almost all of my dashboard lights lit up. the engine was on, but nothing was happening. i pushed the accelerator down and nothing, still. as i was pulling off to the side of the road, the car died. i waited five minutes and the engine was able to be restarted. but the engine light stayed on. i had to turn the engine on and off multiple times to restart the engine. this had happened a couple of times before, but nothing as severe. *tr
While driving on surface streets the "wrench" indicator light came on and the car went into limp mode. i got to a parking lot and shut off the engine. after about a minute i restarted the engine, the wrench light went out and all seemed ok. after driving about 6-7 miles on the interstate a repeat of the problem happened. i again shut off the engine. after restarting, i drove for another 6-7 miles and had the car again go into limp mode. after restarting the car the engine light came on and stayed on with no further problems. the next day all lights were off and have stayed off since then. i have made an appointment to have the car looked at on jan 2, 2014. i feel that this is a very unsafe condition and should be looked at very closely by the nhtsa. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving approximately 60 mph, the check engine light suddenly illuminated. the contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic, who performed a diagnostic and stated that there was a problem with the evaporative emissions system. in addition, fuel was leaking into the charcoal canister caused by a purged solenoid. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 37,456.
I was driving south on hwy 53, doing 55 mph when the car jumped out of gear. the engine was still running at idlespeed, but when i depressed the gas pedal nothing happened. also the wrench light and the engine light where both on. i had to pull off the side of the road to avoid traffic and shut off the engine. i waited a minute and it started right back up with only the engine light on. this was the 5th time this happened in 2 days and was the same each time. i drove straight to the dealer where i had bought it and they did a check and retrieved p2111 in koec, then performed etb internal ids pinpoint test. etb or throttle body failed test. they replaced the throttle body and motor asy, which is a known problem, and charged me $432.65. i believe ford should have replaced this at no cost, since this is a known problem. *tr
Driving on four lane road when lost engine power to idle. accelerator pedal non-responsive. drove vehicle four miles back to home. had to restart engine seven times to return home. plugged in code reader, it stated the throttle body actuator sticking closed. *tr
Began to run very rough. on july 13, 2013, i experienced a similar problem. malloy ford in winchester, va, charged me $310 to clean the throttle body. after doing some research, i see this is a known problem, i'm disgusted with ford and the dealership. *tr
Was driving the vehicle on the interstate at about 60 mph and exited safely. went through typical stop-and-go rush hour traffic for about 2 minutes until reaching work, in which the campus' speed is set to 25 mph throughout. vehicle was traveling on work campus a little under 30 mph. suddenly, the car stalled and the battery and oil warning lights had come on. steering the vehicle to a safe parking place was difficult as the steering wheel had become tight. once safely parked, the vehicle was turned off and after 5 seconds turned back on. the engine started up normally. started driving the vehicle closer to where it was needed to be parked and the engine stalled again after 1000 feet and the steering went tight again. turned off the vehicle again and after 5 seconds attempted to turn it back on. the engine had trouble starting but after an abnormal amount of time trying to turn over, the engine did. was able to get the vehicle in the appropriate parking area. vehicle has full tank of gasoline, 2000 miles over oil change recommendation by dealer, and factory battery. vehicle has never been off-road but has been subject to easy snow accumulations since purchased from dealership. *tr
I was driving down a very busy 5-lane road when all of a sudden a wrench appeared on my dashboard and my car had absolutely no power in the accelerator. it began idling irrationally and my car was shaking. i had it towed to the ford dealership to be fixed. it is the throttle body that is malfunctioning, and they guaranteed to me that it would happen again if not fixed. they informed me that there have been many vehicles with this same problem. someone is going to be killed due to this! i was lucky that no one hit me- i could not even get over to the side of the road- my vehicle just had no power at all. if this happens on a highway, this could be horrific! i am extremely disappointed and upset that a recall has not been issued. there have been thousands of complaints, and nothing has been done. someone is going to be severely hurt or be killed due to this issue! *tr
I was stopped at a stoplight and as i accelerated to go through when it turned green, the car just completely died - no warning. it restarted right away so i continued on my way. about an hour later, i had just turned into my neighborhood, so i was going about 10-15 mph and it died again. we took it into the shop and since it was not dying for them, they told us they could not pinpoint the problem. we went for probably 9 months without this happening again, and then about 3 weeks ago, we were driving about 55 mph and it just randomly died again. we took it into the shop this time and they told us that it was the purge valve. $1500 later, the problem is still not fixed. today, it died 3 times in a matter of 5 minutes, all inside of a parking garage. this car is too new to be pouring thousands of dollars into it - especially if this problem is as common as it seems. *tr
My wife was driving are escape and she was merging on the freeway. while trying to merge on the freeway she was traveling 60 mph almost to highway speeds she went to merge in front of a truck and the escape stalled. we were almost hit by the truck because the vehicle had lost all power. we took the vehicle to a dealership and the vehicle was diagnosed with a bad throttle body. *tr
Driving on freeway, at about 65mph, when all of the sudden the engine stalled and power was cut dramatically from the engine. unable to control speed and instantly started stopping. had to pull over sharply and unsafely on the side of an on-ramp narrowly having car behind us miss us. turned off vehicle and had to wait about 20 seconds before restarting the car. it then worked ok. happened several times on one trip of about 20 miles. took to a dealer and they diagnosed it as the throttle body needing to be replaced. *tr
Our 2010 ford escape has had the exact problem described in the nhtsa case number pe 13003. our vehicle has 43,000 miles on it and driving to work on a fast moving city street at approx 45-50 mph and the car lost all throttle control and went into the described "limp mode", no warning or check engine lights came on. we had a very difficult time controlling the car and getting it off the road while trying to dodge traffic. limp mode does not describe the available power. at 900 rpm you can walk faster than the car will drive... the transmission is also acting as an engine brake and slowing the car even faster so i popped it into neutral and was able to coast to the side of the road. we turned off the ignition and restarted and the car started fine. put it in gear and accelerated to approx 20 mph and it went into limp mode again and this time the small wrench light came on in the dash. a gearbox or transmission problem? luckily we were still on the side of the road so we again turned off the car and restarted to reset (wrench light went out) and it worked fine for the next 14 miles as we were going to the ford dealer. just as we were arriving it did it a third time, this time the check engine light came on and they were able to retrieve the dtc code of 2112 and diagnosed a defective throttle body assembly. the service manager was not aware of any recall and charged us $589 dollars for the repair (part, labor, diagnostic test and calibration of the computer). we have been the only owners of this car and it has had all of its normal service done. at 43k miles it is, for all purposes, still a new car. lucky for us it happened on city streets and not at highway speeds. hopefully ford will issues a recall on these to repair them. *tr
I heard a pop sound and there was no response when pressing on the accelerator. idle was rough, i was able to coast into a parking lot.i let it idle and tried to increase rpm. there was no response to pedal. the car idle roughly. i shut car off and restarted. it cranked longer than normal, like it wasn't getting fuel. then it ran fine. after about 20 more miles it repeated process, leaving me to coast off the road in traffic. i have a warning light (wrench) meaning throttle body or drive train on my dash during the shut down. i have had this vehicle in ford repair shops over four times for powertrain repairs, starting before warranty was expired. the last one ford would not cover the repair under previous warranty, even though the first repair during warranty period was never fixed. now i am endangering myself and all those around me by the new problem. if the vehicle does this in a center lane a pile up could occur. *tr
Three times my car gas died with only 28k miles on it. first time i start the car proceed to drive up to fove mph and have a total loss of power. pedal to the floor and the rpms do not raise. this has happened two more times, both on the expressway where i had to coast to a stop in the far left lane and i was almost rear ended. turn the car on and off and the problem went away the first two times, including the wrench light. third time the engine light is still on. owned the car for a smidge over three years and my warranty does not cover this. this is unbelievable. *tr
While driving approx 20 mph in a community to car slowed down to a crawl. it would not travel faster than approx 5 mph. happened again a week later. took it to garage the computer read p2111 - throttle actuator control tac system - stuck open. description; this powertrain control module pcm fault status indicates the throttle plate is at a greater angle than commanded. possible causes; binding throttle body stuck open, tac motor circuit open, tac motor circuits are cross-wired, tac motor harness circuits are shorted together, damage pcm. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact was driving 5 mph and preparing to stop for a traffic stop when the vehicle stalled. the oil and battery warning lights were illuminated. the contact was able to restart the vehicle, which proceeded to operate normally. the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 86,150.
While traveling at a relatively low traveling speed the vehicle seems to lose power and i can no longer accelerate. the tool light/check engine light will come on and i can coast to a stop. once i stop the vehicle i turn it off. when i restart the vehicle it hesitates for approx 6 seconds and then turns over/restarts with no further problems. this has occurred four times since 11/6/13. *tr
While traveling down the highway at approximately 70 mph, the car suddenly loses power. the vehicle becomes unresponsive to throttle controls. vehicle must be pulled off of the highway, onto the shoulder. the vehicle key must be cycled to reset the system. being an active investigation, there should be known cases of the electronic throttle body failing on these cars. it is a safety concern, and the drive by wire design of the vehicle does not allow a throttle body to be cleaned. *tr
I was driving on the highway with my cruise control on when the cruise control shut off and a wrench light came on. the car stopped excelling and i had to cruise from the fast lane over 2 lanes to the side of the road. once to the side i turned my car off waited a minute and then turned it back on. it turned on fine and ran fine from then on. i of course called ford immediately but it was after hours and i left a message. after about an hour of driving it began to shake my foot when i pushed on the accelerator. prior to this i did feel some slipping or surges every so often when i was accelerating as if it was having trouble shifting. when i brought it to ford it was decided that my throttle body needed to be replaced. this was done fast and was covered under my extended warranty it was to be fixed for just my deductible of $100. all fine and dandy until i read the reviews that this has been going on for a while and multiple people have been affected. *tr
Stopped at stop sign, pressed accelerator and engine rpms did not increase. no engine response from accelerator. turned off engine. restarted and the throttle/engine worked normally. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving 50 mph, the vehicle stalled. the contact mentioned that the wrench warning icon illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic however, the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 68,500 and the current mileage was 68,771. updated 12/30/13*cn the consumer stated the battery exploded.updated 01/14/14
I was driving in congested morning traffic and the engine stalled. the wrench indicator light popped on as i lost acceleration. i was able to coast on to the median. however, i was almost struck from behind by another car. after about 30 seconds, the car started back up and i immediately went to work and made it home without problems this evening. after researching on the internet, it appears this is a recurring problem and just a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured or hurt. i am afraid to drive now as other complaints indicate this has not only been occurring for quite some time, but it may also continue to happen more frequently and eventually stop running altogether. *tr
I filed a complaint yesterday and will continue to as long as this is happening, when i started my car this morning i drove 3 miles and it stopped moving, when i press the gas nothing happened and the wrench light came on, stopped the car turned it off started it drove the car about 20 feet and it did the same. started the car again made it almost to work 3 miles away and it happened again. stopped the car turned it off and started it again it continued all day long approximately 15 times all day. *tr
As i was driving down the interstate with the cruise control set at 70mph, the vehicle turned the cruise control off and decelerated almost immediately to 60mph which caused an uncomfortable thrashing forward of myself and my 2 children. we had our seat belts on, so we were not injured. the vehicle continued to lose power, so i pulled off the highway and placed the vehicle in park and turned off the engine. i noticed a little wrench had appeared in the left corner of my dash display. i looked up this symbol in my owners manual. i then decided to go ahead and try to continue driving as i was a good 75+ miles from home and i was in a very remote area. when i started the engine, i noticed the service engine light came on and did not go back out. i proceeded down the interstate approximately 2 miles before the vehicle did the same thing. this time i attempted to accelerate and with the gas pedal to the floor, had no success. the car just continued to lose speed, so again , i pulled off the highway and this time i let the vehicle proceed as far as it could without applying the brake. as the car was nearly stopped, it started to shake as if it were about to shut off. i turned off the engine and again, restarted after a short break and was able to make it the rest of the way home. *tr
While driving the engine stalled, but the lights and radio continued to work. we pulled over and put the car into park and attempted to restart the engine, and it started. however, just a couple of weeks later (this past weekend) it happened again. both time we were traveling around 20-25 mph on city streets, no warning on indication prior to the stalling, but when it does stall the oil and engine light comes on. *tr
The vehicle was traveling on the expressway when suddenly the car seemed to "stall" although it never actually stalled out, but rpms dropped to 800-1000 and would not respond to any throttle action . after turning the car off, waiting and starting again, the problem then resurfaced about a half mile later. i was again able to pull off, restart the car and continue normally. once in a safe location (work), i was able to connect a obd-ii reader to the car and found the following: p2112: tac system stuck closed running a google search of the above error gave many many articles pointing to a throttle body issue. this issue was preceded by the car randomly stalling out (this time actual stalls). these happened at very random intervals for approx. 2-3 weeks before the expressway issue. *tr
Backed out of parking space, wrench lit on dash, no throttle control, erratic idle. have a code scanner, it read p2111. placed in park, shut engine off and restarted, light went off. drive 5 minutes, wrench light came on again, no throttle control, erratic idle, codes p2111, p2112. almost got rear-ended. again put in park and restarted, made it home. this has happened 3 times before this in the last 2 weeks. very dangerous loosing power like that with no warning, i'm afraid to let my wife drive the vehicle, she is on the freeway more. i'm lucky to be on less traveled side roads where i can pull over to shoulder to restart vehicle. some say its the throttle body, others the electronic gas pedal. vehicle is out of warranty and i don't want to throw money at parts. ford should recall this. *tr
While making a left at an intersection the engine cut to idle and would not accelerate. after pulling to the side of the road the car was shut off and started again and ran ok. the car was take to the dealer the next day. we were told the throttle body was bad. i was also told they go bad a lot and they not covered by the engine warranty. traffic was light at the time if it was heavy this could have caused an accident. there have been times in the past were the car hesitated badly from a stop. *tr
While driving, the vehicle will stall, or drop to about 800-900 rpm with no response from the accelerator. the "wrench" will come on the instrument panel, and the vehicle will sometimes stall/kill altogether. we have had the codes pulled by a technician, and they say that the "throttle body is stuck open", "the throttle body is stuck closed", and there is one more but i cannot recall it off the top of my head. i have called ford and they have said that they do not have a known issue, nor is this a familiar problem per the symptoms. i have likewise done an internet search and found several complaints, and an nhtsa investigation launched. please advise that this is a major security concern for me - yesterday i was traveling in the left lane of a major freeway, at freeway speeds, when my vehicle seemingly stalled, dropped to 800 rpms, and i had to cross 3 lanes of rush hour traffic to pull over to the shoulder to shut my car off, put it in park, then start it back up and merge back into traffic, then have it repeat the problem less than a mile later. this is a huge problem, and if not fully addressed by ford, my fear is it is going to cause accidents if it hasn't already. thank you in advance for your follow-up and support. *tr
Throttle body replaced on 10/16/2013. merging onto interstate highway when sudden down shift and engine rev occurred. car would not accelerate when needed and pulled onto safety lane.. turned engine off and restarted, same thing occurred with acceleration at 60 mph and higher. very dangerous because car slows down dramatically and will not accelerate. *tr
While traveling on highway with my family, at about 65 mph there was an engine shudder, then the yellow wrench light illuminated on left side of console. engine was now vibrating and shaky. stepped on gas and no acceleration, although all other electrical items were running. with the forward momentum i was able to get over. pulled over to side of highway, called roadside assistance and in the process, i shut off the vehicle. the agent on the phone asked for the mileage of vehicle and i turned the vehicle on again. the yellow wrench light was off and the vehicle seemed normal. i was able to drive to the next exit and get off the highway and safely home. the vehicle has displayed no further issues since then. this vehicle had just been in for normal service the day prior, saturday. after doing further research online it was found this brand of vehicle had a reported problem with the throttle manifold intake. *tr
I was driving from virginia towards the delaware beaches. after crossing the bay bridge in maryland on route 50 ... driving in the left lane traveling 55mph, and all of a sudden i lost the ability to accelerate and began losing speed. i had to pull all the way over to the right lane losing power as each second passed. i was able to coast along the side of the road to pull off the highway. after getting to the ford dealership .. i was told that i need a throttle body .. i'm here at the dealership now .. and the part is well over $400 .. have not received the bill yet.. but my guess, with labor between $500-$600! this is ridiculous as the car is only 3 years old! please make ford recall this part - throttle body - as it seems unfair to have such a high cost repair after 3years of owning the vehicle -- thank you for all your help! this is a safety risk -- someone could have died in this process ..as this occurred on the highway -- please do the right thing, and save future lives.. thank you! *tr
While driving out of my subdivision, my ford escape lost all power. the engine was surging but the vehicle would not respond when pressing the gas pedal. i turned the vehicle off and restarted it, but the same problem occurred. the vehicle was towed to the dealership where a diagnostic test revealed a failed throttle body. even though my vehicle is slightly under the 5 yr/60,000 mile powertrain warranty, the dealership is insisting on using my extended warranty to cover the part which will cost me $100 deductible and i will be responsible for the most of the cost of my rental vehicle (extended warranty company only pays rental car for labor hours on vehicle repairs, the vehicle will not be pulled in for repair for several days). *tr
Occassionally, when the vehicle accelerates, usually between 0-50 mph, the gas pedal locks, the engine stalls, and the check engine light appears. the vehicle must then be placed into park and turned off. when turned back on, the check engine light disappears and the vehicle functions normally. this has occurred three times in three months, once while merging onto a highway and twice while accelerating from a stop. ford service explained this could be due to a failed throttle body part. *tr
Throughout all of last winter, i had issues with my 2010 ford escape stalling. this occurred countless times, and nearly caused many accidents. it most frequently occurred when it was very cold (zero or below), and on some occasions would stall numerous times in a row, or fail to re-start. no warning light of any sort ever came on. after paying well over $1000 to get various things "fixed" that i was told would solve the problem, it continued happening. then i received the first bulletin letter regarding throttle body issues and took my car to the ford dealership in south burlington, vt. they proceeded to tell me that because they couldn't duplicate the issue, or get a code, they couldn't help me. a few weeks later when it happened again, the wrench light came on for the first time, so i drove directly to the dealership again. i was told once again that they couldn't fix the throttle body issue, and tried charging me over $300 for diagnosing my car (looking into the issue of why the wrench was illuminated). i refused to pay, because this is a ford issue, it's well documented all over the internet, and it's something they need to pay for. my car is still not fixed. *tr
While drive down hwy at 60 mph , engine light/wrench came on and the engine went into slow speed at 900 rpm. also did it at low speeds while driving away from stopped. had to replace the throttle body control and problem went away. *tr
While traveling 65 mph on the highway the vehicle suddenly lost all power and shuttered to a stop. throttle body replaced by ford dealer on 10/08/13. *tr
While driving freeway speeds, i lost power. wrench light came on, engine remained running and i limped to the side of the freeway. when re-starting car, problem disappeared. took car to private mechanic ([xxx]) and he could not find a problem in the computer history. he suspected throttle linkage. car drove fine until oct 25, 2013 when it recurred on the freeway. while coasting in the hov lane, we put vehicle in "neutral" and tried to restart, problem did not resolve. only after coasting to a stop and putting the vehicle in "park" and restarting would the problem re-set. very hazardous losing power at freeway speeds and trying to limp to the side. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
While driving at 55 mph, car went into limp home mode, greatly reducing speed on rural highway. code was for throttle actuator stuck closed. dealer cleaned throttle plates only, and returned car. next day, the same thing occurred. this time dealer replaced throttle body. this is a dangerouls situation for which i have noticed there have been complaints and an investigation. a safety recall should be ordered. a side effect in limp mode was the engine ran rough with decreased gas mileage while car was driven a few miles to dealer in limp mode. *tr
As i pulled onto the highway my escape entered "limp mode". i was almost rear ended so i immediately pulled off the road. the engine idled roughly. i restarted the vehicle and it started running fine. today (oct.4th 2013) the same thing happened while pulling onto the highway. same issue and restarting the vehicle fixed the issue. i plan on taking to dealer asap. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving various speeds, he attempted to make a turn when suddenly the engine stalled with the illumination of the warning indicator. the vehicle resumed normally once restarted. the failure recurred once. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnosis where the technician replaced both the throttle body and motor assembly. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 46,230. updated 11/13/13*lj
In sept while going up a hill, just made it to the top, had loss of power, engine running but accelerator will not work. able to coast down hill into a parking lot. after turned car off, started back up. ran fine until today. little wrench light came on. spoke to mechanic, he stated it was a throttle body problem, ok to drive unless you have further problems, it will need to be replaced in the future. today, nov. 3, while pulling out from a parking lot, into heavy traffic, car engine stalled, put car into park, turned key to off position, then car started right up. vehicles behind ours were able to stop, luckily none collided. *tr
Vehicle's engine shut off at 60 mph. had to pull over and restart car to get power. *js
With cruise control engaged at 55 mph, the vehicle suddenly disengaged cruise control and went to an extremely rough idle with the vehicle shaking like a leaf in the wind. had to exit highway through traffic as the throttle would not respond in any position. it was early morning with light traffic thankfully. this could have been different if the problem had occurred later in the day during heavy traffic.
Traveling on a major highway in the middle lane at 8:30 pm the truck started to hesitate and act like it wasn't running right. then i lost total control of the accelerator but the car was still running. i had all i could do to try to coast over to the shoulder of the road to try and figure out what was wrong. noticing that the accelerator did not engage at all, i turned off the truck and was going to call for a tow truck. that's when i decided to try and start it to see if i could get home on my own. once i started the truck, it was like nothing happened and i continued home making it without a problem. since then this has happened 3 other times, always on the highway, and the last 2 times it happened it, once the truck started back up and i drove off, i only got @ 3 miles down the same highway and it happened again, so i just repeated the procedure and hasn't happened since. i have gone ahead and purchased the new throttle body and am having my mechanic install it this week. i will be driving @ 60 miles one way, 120 miles total, a day for work starting this week and i can't afford to get stranded that far from home and loose time from work or not be able to get home. i've been told that at one point and time that the truck won't just start back up every time, so i'll be getting it fixed. very disappointed that the truck that i purchased in april and only has @ 44000 miles on it would have such a major problem with such an important component. i've been told that they can't keep them on the shelves because there is such a huge problem overall. this can be very dangerous to someone who wouldn't know what to do in a crisis situation. on the box for the part it says ford genuine parts, made in mexico. nice!! maybe you want to rethink where you locate your parts factories. you know the old saying " nothing good is cheap and nothing cheap is good". *tr
When the ford escape is driving and stops at a light the engine starts to riddle. once you hit the gas the car goes into second gear then the gas pedals stops working. can't use the gas pedal. *tr
My daughter was driving to school and she informed me that she lost all acceleration and the vehicle began to jerk forward. this happened 3 times in four days. the engine light and a "wrench" light came on. i took the vehicle to a local ford dealer approximately 20 miles away. the vehicle lost acceleration 10 times during the trip. the gas pedal would not work and the engine would lower to idle and begin to jerk, as if it were going to stall. i had to shut the engine off and wait a few minutes before cranking again. i would make it 100 yards to 3 miles between each incident. the ford dealer stated that the throttle body needs replacing. it is being replaced this week. luckily i had purchased an extended warranty that covers this repair or it would be over $400.00. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while traveling various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was neither diagnosed nor repaired. the contact also mentioned that the failure recurred several times. the manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was 45,000. updated 11/19/13*lj the throttle body was replaced on october 7, 2013
Driving my vehicle home for lunch my vehicle started sputtering and my cruise control kicked off. vehicle rpm's dropped and accelerator pedal quit working. so i pulled over. i used my dtc device to see what code is popping up and it was p2111. i put car in park, shut it off, waited 30 seconds and started it back up and drove home. now i'm here typing this up.
Engine completely died going 60mph on highway. has happened 7 times since, always when vehicle in motion. doesn't matter what speed. has happened going 30mph, 50 mph, etc. *tr
