Driving normally, throttle control powertrain warning light comes on, check engine light comes on, car gas pedal does not work, engine idles and does not accelerate. when you shut the car all the way off and wait then restart the engine the car works as normal again. *tr
The indicator showed upon starting the car, a red warning light "engine check". i was able to drive home less than a mile in at a slow speed, no acceleration was possible. the next morning my husband followed me to the nearest local car repair shop which is 12 miles from my home. again, no acceleration was possible. the car required that the electronic throttle body be replaced. there is a field service action on this model. the previous year the car had been taken to the ford dealership, where the car was purchased, for a voluntary safety defect check for this same issue. apparently the temporary fix, reprogramming the control, that was performed on my vehicle the previous year was not satisfactory to resolve the issue. this is a danger to operating vehicles, since there is no warning until the service goes out in the performance of this part. fortunately i was near my home at the time of the occurrence and was able to safely get to a car repair shop down a rural road for repairs. i would not have been able to drive the car on a city street or highway. basically the car should have been towed in for repairs. *tr
Turn into a parking space and hit the brake to stop , car surged forward and jumped the curb. hit a bus shelter, side swiped a tree , then jump curb back to parking lot before escape came to a full stop. first time sled on a small patch of ice car surged brakes never took hold slid and avoided and street light and a tree before coming to a full stop. took car to shop for oil change had brakes checked said no problem. but sometimes this suv has a power surge when appling brakes. *tr
Was driving, and transmission wouldn't allow rpm to go above 500 and continued to drop to 0 and shut off in the middle of the road. *tr
While driving to work, my car died twice. the first time, while approaching a stop light, the engine cut off. when i came to a stop; i put it in park to try and start it again, and it seemed to struggle when starting as if i were out of gas, but i had just filled up my tank that morning. the light turned green, and there was a stop sign about 500 yards away, and as soon as i was coming to a stop again; the engine dies. this time it took twice as long and several attempts to get it started again. also, when i am sitting idle at a stop light or a stop sign, the rpms will drop very low and start to stall out. i am able to catch it and rev the engine to prevent it from stalling sometimes. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled several times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer more than twice where it was diagnosed several times that the throttle body needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the technician mentioned that the fuel was not properly circulating within the system which was causing the failure. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 40,000.
When i put gas in car it is difficult to start, after starting it shut off while driving.
While driving into work with my cruise control set at 60mph, my vehicle suddenly sputtered and the cruise control disengaged and there seemed to be a loss of power. i remember this description from the throttle bottle notification i received from ford a few months back. i had taken my escape into the dealership on 9/11/14 to have this taken care off and now 2 weeks later my vehicle now has the throttle control/powertrain warning light on and is showing all signs of the notification from ford. i know this issue has already been addressed, but now i am questioning as to whether or not ford is actually fixing the problem. *tr
I was traveling on interstate i-75 when i experienced a sudden loss of power. i was able to maneuver my car to the shoulder of the road. i turned my car off, waited a few minutes and restarted my car. the car when into drive and accelerated with no problem. i am very concerned about this problem. this is a major highway that i travel daily to and from work in rush hour traffic. thankfully, i was not hit in the rear of the car by oncoming semi trucks. i would appreciate some advice on this problem. *tr
Car coasted to a stop with engine running. had to stop put in park, shut off and restart and put in gear to move. we have been told it is a throttle body issue and no warranty coverage. it has happened 4 times since yesterday. in traffic it is very dangerous and my wife was almost rear ended today. *tr
My daughter and i were driving home traveling at approximately 40 mph. all of a sudden without any warning the car totally lost power and i had to coast into a driveway. had my daughter been driving by herself she would not know how to remain calm and get to the side of the road. fortunately i have been driving for a long time and knew what to do. once i turned the vehicle off and back on it ran fine. i thought it was an isolated incidence and thought maybe we had junk in the fuel. the next time i drove the vehicle we were doing 60 mph when it shut down again and this time i was on the freeway next to a semi in heavy traffic and had to turn my emergency flashers on and coast to the shoulder. i had to cut off vehicles in the right lane to get safely to the shoulder. once again i turned the vehicle off and back on again and went home. my husband did research on the internet and found that there were lots of complaints with identical symptoms and when they went to the ford dealership were told they knew nothing about this problem. the other people found out that it was the throttle body that needed replacement. we went to the local ford dealership and asked about it and they played dump and said they hadn't heard anything about it and were actually rude to us. i located a throttle body in stock at a ford dealership 3 hours away. we picked the part up and my husband installed it. it took approximately 1 hour to replace and cost $207.22. i have not had a problem since. it is criminal to allow this to go unfixed. it posses a terrible risk to drivers. the throttle body is not just on the 2009-2013 ford escape it is also on : 2010-2012 ford fusion, 2011-2013 lincoln mkz, 2010-2011 mercury milan, and 2009-2011 mercury mariner. *tr
While accelerating to pull out into traffic gas pedal quit working and wrench light came on when hitting about 20 mph and car slowed to a crawl. car stayed idling, but gas pedal quit working all together. idled down first side street and shut the car off. restarted vehicle 2 mins later and gas pedal started working again. car idle revs up for a second suddenly on its own at slow speeds like waiting in a drive thru and causes the car to jerk forward if brake pedal is not pressed on firmly. sometimes feels like the person behind you has hit your car when they haven't. *tr
While on a busy 6 lane hwy., i was at a center turn lane and completed my turn when light changed, then went to make my right turn on to the next road.... when my cars started to shake very badly and lost all power down to a crawl, and then stall, with cars behind me almost rear ending myself!! with horns blaring i was able to restart it to only have it do it again, only this time i was able to pull into the oil change shop there on that corner, where they checked for codes & found the "tac system stuck open"... they checked all fluids and i drove to the local repair shop and went on to work to start researching the problem!! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving approximately 45 mph, the throttle failed and the check engine light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis. the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. the vehicle has not been repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 40,000.
Engine stalled at 70 mph without warning on a busy highway. still had power steering. needed to cross three lanes of traffic without engine power. extremely dangerous situation. attempted to restart engine approximately 10 times. each time engine would start, idle for several seconds, and then cut off. eventually was able to start engine, put engine into neutral and revved engine to moderate rpm speed. seemed to reset issue and was able to drive away. *tr
Me and my son were out i was driving around 35- 40 mph and my car started to feel strange out of the blue my wrench light comes on and then my engine light i lose all power i am hitting gas pedal nothing happens. just stops on busy street . i was terrified for our safety. i turn off car wait a few mins and start again it happened 3 times in a 3 mile radius. its parked and not risking my life or somebody else. *tr

While traveling about 65 mph down the highway my 2010 ford escape's engine stopped completely. a warning light (the wrench on the ford models) came on as a i coasted to a safe spot on the highway. steering gave out a bit too. car started right back up after i found a safe location to stop. *tr
My family and i were traveling hwy 113 in va coming back to pa from nc. my husband accelerated to pass a vehicle. after passing, our vehicle began losing acceleration...my husband pushed the gas pedal to the floor and was not getting any acceleration. the wrench light illuminated and we had to make an emergency stop on the side of the highway while cars were passing us and coming up on us quickly. we came to a stop and the vehicle began to stall. my husband shut the vehicle off, waiting a minute and restarted. the vehicle seemed to run fine the rest of the way to pa. we called the dealership the following day (monday) and were told they could not get the vehicle in until 8/4. i began finding info on the web regarding ford's customer satisfaction program 13n03 regarding the throttle body. i took the vehicle in and was told there were not any codes showing on the computer. they refused to replace the throttle body. i was told to drive the vehicle and if it happened again to bring it back. i refused and insisted they replace it. i am now still fighting with ford to reimburse me. i have sent letters to ford only to receive a "form letter" back from them suggesting that i take the vehicle to the dealership to determine if the throttle body needs replacement...i had it replaced already...they obviously do not read letters sent to them. i will keep fighting but i do not understand why the nhtsa continues to receive complaints about this issue and does nothing about it. it is a huge safety issue! shame on ford and the nhtsa! *tr
I was driving at 40mph on a city street. the vehicle suddenly shuddered and began to slow down. i am now aware to look for a trouble light. the wrench light was illuminated although difficult to see through the glare of the windshield. i was clearly able to see the light. the car slowed to a complete stop. the engine continued to run rough and there was no loss of electrical power. i put the car into park and restarted the car. the car ran without incident until i was able to park at home-about 5 miles away. the car had routine service on 7-16-2014. a throttle body reading was not done, as i requested at time of service, although it was documented, in writing, that there was a calibration update for my vehicle at this time. a previous incident of complete electrical failure was blamed on a faulty battery in march. i had absolutely no previous indication "failure" or cranking issues up until the time of electrical power/battery failure. even the key fob did not work to unlock the doors. the battery was replaced at my expense. inquiries about the throttle body issue was were also ignored, by the dealer, at that time. *tr
Came home from a 45 mile trip. pulled up in front of our home. i put the vehicle into reverse & the engine died. ford had just reprogrammed this vehicle per a recall only about 1,000 miles before this engine failure. i had noticed since the reprogramming that the engine hesitated at times & sounded/felt like at other times like the engine was going to die. ford replaced spark plugs 1, 2, & 4 stating that they were intermittently misfiring under load. since spark plugs were replaced vehicle no longer hesitates but the engine continues to sound/feel like it is going to die at times. *tr

Wrench light came on and vehicle began sputtering and idling low, unable to exceed 5 mph. *js
While traveling 60 mph on i-45 south of houston, tx. my 2010 ford escape lost power. i immediately had to maneuver across 3 lanes of traffic while coasting to a stop. luckily i was not hit!!! i turned the vehicle off and allowed it to sit for a few minutes. i restarted it and the orange wrench symbol appeared on the dash. i turned it off and restarted it again. this time the malfunction indicator lamp came on. i drove the vehicle home with limited operation, decreased engine power and vehicle speed. i experienced failure one more time during this trip. when i had the diagnostic trouble codes (dtc) pulled it was p2111, "throttle body stuck open." researching it on the internet revealed nhtsa action number pe13003. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated while turning a corner, the vehicle stalled. the contact was able to restart the vehicle. also, the contact indicated that the vehicle had surged intermittently on multiple occasions. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 49,150.
I was driving to work on i75 at 75 mph when my 2010 ford escape lost power dropping to less than 20 mph. i was able to get from the left lane to the berm three lanes to my right. i waited about 5 minutes and restarted the car driving about 100 yds. when it happened again. i turned the car off and waited about 20 minutes then restarted and was able to get to work on side roads with the car surging and jerking along the way. i took the car to huntington ford the next day and they could not find a cause. the following day i received a letter from ford regarding what huntington referred to as a "limp home" mode which let take to a dealer and have the throttle body reprogrammed, which i did. the car was ok for a few days after that and then started stalling and surging again. i called the dealer and they said i should replace the throttle body but that even though it was under an extended warranty i would still need to pay for the replacement. *tr
The first incident occurred approximately 2months ago (april 2014) as i was driving on a state road (new circle rd in lexington ky)at around 60mph during my morning commute around 8am. the vehicle seemingly stalled but all the systems were fine (still had power steering, lights, radio, braking system etc) with the exception of the accelerator which didn't do anything when i put my foot on the gas. i was able to coast over to the side of the road turned the engine off, sat for about 5 mins & was able to continue on the road without further issue (the check engine light didn't even come back on). the most recent date was 06/07/14 with my family in the car as passengers. i was at a stoplight turning left when, as previously, the engine stalled as i was turning. again, all systems registered and were working but when i put my foot on the gas nothing happened. again i was luckily able to coast to the side of the road and turn off the engine. this time after waiting roughly 5 mins and turning the engine back on, nothing happened after i hit the accelerator. i turned the engine back off and waited an additional 5 mins. this time i was able to give the car gas and as my home was nearby was thankfully able to make it to my house. the check engine light however did not go off as it had previously. i took the car to my dealership on 06/09/14 and they confirmed that it was the throttle body. *tr
I was driving on highway (with two children under 4 in the car), luckily it was stop and go traffic. the car completely and without warning lost power and i could no longer accelerate. i was able to put hazards on and pull over to the break-down lane (across three lanes of traffic), turn the car off and back on again. it restarted immediately. (weather was warm- mid 60s, no humidity, i had driven the car earlier in the day and had been driving for about 20 minutes. the car is well maintained and had recently had an oil change.) *tr

Traveling about 6 pm (rush hour heavy traffic) 3 lane expressway when car would no longer accelerate. had to coast over to the left shoulder since we were in the left passing lane. the left shoulder was not as wide as the right shoulder and we felt the situation was very dangerous we stayed in the car with our seatbelts on and called for road service (aaa). we did not receive help for two hours. just purchased this car two months before this incident - pre owned certified by dealership. can't understand why ford waits until the part fails before replacing it. i feel strongly it should have been replaced as part of the "certification" process. there were no warning lights or indications this was going to happen before it happened. after the car "died", a wrench light appeared, but not until after we had coasted to a stop. if we had been in the middle lane instead of the lane next to the shoulder, i feel certain we would have been involved in a high speed possible multiple car accident as traffic was heavy and fast. this is so very wrong! thank you for making this complaint possible. i hope it helps result in a recall by ford right away so no one has to get hurt or even die. *tr
This is the third incident in two days, i'm driving along when i take my foot of the gas pedal and coast, the engine dies, the dash shows the battery and oil light. you can still steer, but the car slows down drastically with the engine not running, i had someone almost rear end me, because i slowed down so much. all incidents were the same, but the first time it happened it was very scary because you didn't know what was happening and you didn't know what to do. the car will start back up if you park it or put it in neutral, but i was in the middle of an intersection the third time, stopped traffic cars were honking at me. this is a huge safety issue, taking it in tomorrow to get it fixed, should be a recall. *tr

Escape sitting at stop light wrench light illuminated on dash and escape had no power turned car off and then restarted the escape and drove home not another issue for the next 16 miles.. used obdii code reader to scan escapes on board computer and it had freeze frame data from a p2111 code which indicates throttle body issue. *tr

1st occurrence: i was driving at 35mph and suddenly my car surged forward then slowed down to 5mph. i tried to accelerate to a higher mph but it would not let me go any faster. i could steer and the radio was still on. confused, i coasted off the side of the road, looked at the instrument panel for a light of some kind (none were there). i then turned off the engine and let it sit for approximately 2 minutes then it restarted and i drove home (about 1 1/2 miles) the 2nd occurrence - may 6th. i had just left my doctor's office, within 1 1/2 minutes & driving 15 mph (1/16 of a mile) the failure happened again. i again had to coast to the side of the road apply my hazard lights and turn off the engine for approximately 2 minutes. it re-started and i drove it home (it was intermediately surging forward) about 5 miles. the 3rd occurrence: may 8th on i-70 westbound :speed 60 mph: loss of power, coasted to the berm of the highway, ( thank goodness all the traffic was 1 mile behind me or this could have caused a serious accident) turned it off and waited about 2 minutes and restarted made it to work and home without further stalling but the jerking continued. i called interstate ford (miamisburg) explained the problems i was experiencing and my fear to drive this vehicle. *tr

2010 ford escape. consumer writes in regards to vehicle throttle body issues. *smd the consumer she received a letter regarding the throttle body, but didn't think it sounded too serious. the letter stated engine power and vehicle speed would be reduced. the consumer stated she had the misfortune of experiencing the problem on march 16, 2014. the speed was not just reduced, but the gas pedal was inoperable and the vehicle just coasted to a stop, as if she had run out of gas. all the while, the engine was running, although not smoothly and all the lights were in working order. minutes later, the wrench light illuminated on the dashboard. *jb
After i came to a stop in residential area, i traveled about 25 mph and the vehicle seemed to be in neutral, i was able to steer to the side of the road, but nothing happened when i put more pressure on the accelerator, this was really frightening to experience without a warning, and i will never buy another ford vehicle, at about 18 months after owning the vehicle the entire transmission had to be rebuilt and i bought this brand new to avoid issues. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that the vent controls failed without warning. the contact was unable to use the air conditioning and heating function. years before, the dealer replaced the power steering control module and the ic module, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the throttle body sensor and blower motor failed. the contact later experienced an extremely strong vibration in the steering wheel and the power steering warning light flashed. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for further inspection to determine the cause of the failure. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the dealer replaced the parts. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 97,411.
The engine went into a low power mode and throttle was un responsive, i had to cruise to a stop and restart then it seems ok but i notice the throttle will speed up and slow down when i had to run thru a school zone(low speed) it also happened several times after that most recently on 4/21/14 on the highway at 65 mph and i had to drift to the shoulder to restart the car while others honked and veered around me i do not understand why ford has not recalled these. i did get a letter called the customer satisfaction program 13n03 that states the problem- throttle body- is under extended warranty but only if the wrench light is on and mine stays on only when there is a problem if there is additional problems i would have to pay just to get it diagnosed. i am not impressed with fords attempt at this (soft) recall. *tr
Was driving lost all power at first then was able to move at 2 mph when gas pedal was fully depressed, car started to shake. heard loud pop then engine light came on dash. i was able to creep along to get out of moving traffic. drove at the side of the road until i tried to get into a parking area which required me to make a left turn with traffic coming waited and waited then from a complete stop i make the turn into the lot which has a slight incline i was flooring the gas pedal still with out any power of more than 2 mph worried i would slip back into moving traffic. parked called a tow truck. turned off engine went into work. came back out of work restarted car no check engine light and everything seem to work fine after that. frightened i could have caused a serious accident for other and myself. *tr
I was stopped, waiting to make a left hand turn and mid-turn, the car turned off. fortunately, there wasn't any traffic approaching my car or this could have resulted in a serious accident. *tr
I own a 2010 ford escape. i was driving approximately 40 mph up a slight incline on a two lane road at 6:30 am in the dark when suddenly the vehicle jerked and would not accelerate. the wrench warning icon illuminated. while on the decline of the road i was able to coast into the first lane and into a break down lane and into a parking lot at a very slow rate of speed because once you applied the brakes and slowed down you could not regain any speed. i shut the engine off and was able to restart the vehicle without failure within a few mintues but the vehicle was not running right. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where the technician stated that the throttle body would have to be replaced and the serpentine belt. the vehicle was repaired at the dealer. i cannot believe this is not a safety recall issue for ford. i could have been hit multiple times on rte 1 trying to get my vehicle over two lanes of traffic to the side of the road. *tr
Driving on highway using cruise control setting at 65 mph, when all of sudden vehicle began to slow down and stall on me. i had to pull over on the side of the road because the vehicle was shaking and i could not give it power to stay with traffic speed. i got to the side put the vehicle in park and it still was shaken so i turned it off. i then waited a minute or so and started the vehicle back up even though it was hesitating to start. once back on i drove with my hazard on at a speed of 50 mph. *tr
