Recently reported VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL problems on 2010 Ford Escape

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving 45 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled. the contact was able to restart the vehicle but the vehicle continued to stall. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer. the dealer stated that the electric throttle body was defective and needed to be replaced. the contact did not have the throttle body replaced. the failure mileage was 64,000.

I was driving down the street when my car stopped and check engine light came on wrench icon also came on as i tried to accelerate car. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle decelerated independently. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnosis. the technician stated that the electronic throttle body would have to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 19,200. *tr

While driving the car it started to shake and the pedal of the gas stop working completely the car would not accelerate and rolled until it stopped. all vehicles behind us started to beep as we had no idea what happened. after stopping the car we checked around the car had no issues in the engine . we started again and it work fine. since the 1st accident the same thing has been happening at least once per week and one time at high speed. *tr

I was driving down a boulevard in new orleans a month ago, and suddenly i lost power. the engine was on, but it would not take any gas, so i glided to a stop next to the curb. a light on the dash shaped like a wrench came on. i looked in my owner's manual and discovered the light meant that i had a problem with the power train or throttle and that i should take the car to the dealer as soon as possible. i put the car in park and turned the key off. the engine started again, and i drove it home. the next day the same thing happened twice on the way to veterans' ford in metairie. i left the car with them for four hours, but they could find no problem. this stalling continued to happen two or three times a week. last saturday it happened while i was driving up an overpass on elysian fields, and there was no place to pull off. i stopped the car on the grade as cars stacked up behind me. on monday, i took my wife to a doctor's appointment and ran some errands, and my escape stalled four times in twenty-five miles. yesterday when the same thing happened, the engine-shaped light on the dash came on in addition to the "wrench" light. so today i took it in to veterans' ford again and left it. i called this afternoon and was told that the "throttle body" had to be replaced but they didn't have one in stock, so i am going to have to pick the car up tomorrow and drive it--sparingly and cautiously--until they receive the part. a few minutes ago i looked up "ford escape throttle body" to find out how much one would cost and discovered that an nhtsa investigation has been underway since march. my escape is more than three years old, but i have a 5 year, 50,000 mile warranty on the power train, which may include the throttle body. the clerk at veterans' ford did not know if the warranty applied. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving 50 mph, the vehicle failed to accelerate any further. the vehicle was shut off and restarted as it operated as designed. the failure recurred one month later while the contact was driving 35 mph. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis where the contact was informed that the throttle body would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 47,000. updated 09/25/13*lj

Power was lost and the throttle had no response-engine ran rough but would not respond to throttle-had to restart to regain power-very,very, frightening. *tr

While driving, the vehicle stalled out 1 time today, 1 time yesterday, and 1 time about 3 weeks ago. no sign of a problem until the engine stopped accelerating suddenly. called the ford dealer today, and they say it is a known problem with this make/model/year. he said the throttle body is bad and will have to be replaced. however, these parts are on about a 2 week wait because they are on "national backorder". obviously a bigger problem than ford can keep up with. this stalling is dangerous because it happens at highway speeds. the car can be doing 45+ and suddenly slow down to a stop, risking injury to the people in the car and other motorists. ford needs to announce a recall to keep someone from getting hurt. *tr

Car suddenly has no gas, engine is running but no control over acceleration . *tr

While driving on freeway at approx. 55-65 mph, the vehicle went from cruising speed down to approx. 30 mph without warning and almost getting rear ended. the dashboard check engine light and wrench symbol appeared illuminated . the vehicle was apparently in safe mode and only able to go a speed of 30 mph. after cruising onto the shoulder of freeway, the car was shut off and restarted and continued with same problem for several miles. eventually the vehicle was able to maintain regular speed with warning light still illuminated. after doing a little research, this is a common problem with ford vehicles and the part needed throttle body assembly is on national back order from ford and is not listed as a recall or covered under warranty. *tr

I was driving about 40mph and my escape all of sudden lost power. the vehicle stayed running but it would not drive forward. the traffic was light, so i was able to pull over with my flashers on and stop. had the traffic been in rush hour there could have been a major accident. i tried to put the vehicle in reverse and drive and it wouldn't do anything, but the engine stayed running and the "wrench warning light" appeared on the dash. i then turned the vehicle off and waited a few minutes and started in up again. everything then ran fine. i took the escape to the ford dealer where they found out that the power failure did occur in the throttle body air intake and it needed to be replaced. they also informed me that they had another escape that was needing to be worked on with the same problem and parts were on backorder and it would be a few weeks before mine would be fixed. *tr

No throttle response. *tr

Driving on the interstate at 60 mph, vehicle without warning is unable to accelerate while attempting to change lanes. again on 6/12, accelerated from a stop light, without warning the car is unable to continue to accelerate and stops in the middle of an intersection during rush hour traffic. turned car off, turned it back on again, was able to get out of the intersection and pull over to the right hand lane before it stopped accelerating again. vehicle was towed to ford dealership they found that the throttle body needed to be replaced. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while traveling at unknown speeds, the vehicle failed to respond to acceleration attempts. the vehicle was not repaired or diagnosed. the manufacturer was contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 45,000. the vin was unavailable.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed and there was no response. the vehicle was coasted to the side of the road. the contact removed the air filter and then replaced it. the vehicle resumed as normal for a short distance. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis. the trouble code detected a faulty throttle actuator. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 55,000. updated 07-17-13 *bf

The vehicle lost power while driving at relatively constant speed. the engine hesitated, car did not accelerate when the gas pedal was applied. the engine then stalled. i pulled over, restarted the engine, and the car seem to run normally after this first incident. the vehicle has continued to intermittently have the same issue, although it may need to be restarted a few times before acting normal again. the vehicle was towed because it stalled and seem unable to make the drive home. the engine throttle was cleaned in august by a mechanic, but stalled repeatedly 3 days later. using dry gas and keeping the tank nearly full has not solved the issue either. my experience seems similar to many complaints found at this website and other places on the internet. *js

While i was driving, the car started stalling : the speed indicator started coming down and even pressing on the accelerator, there was no pick up and the wrench sign lit up indicating the power train defect.i moved the car to the shoulder and waited for some assistance. i mechanic friend of mine came after about 45 min. he started the car and the wrench sign was no longer there. rode the car for about 10 miles to get to my house. ran some errands (about 20 round trip miles) later and the car rode fine. on 5/30/2013 morning (today) on my way to work, the truck stalled again with the lit up wrench sign. pulled on to the shoulder, turned off engine and got the truck towed to the closest ford dealer - bob davidson ford,, parkville, maryland 21234 (410-661-6400). they performed diagnostics for a fee of $123.00 and said that the throttle body assembly need to be replaced. the service dept indicated that they were out of these parts and is backordered. they were not sure when they will get the part. i drove the suv home with no further problems. i called ford motor co. customer relations and complained. they issued a claim number cas[xxx]. i am unable to rent a car as i don't know how long it would be until they get the part to fix. i searched and found that this had been a recurring problem for the escape 2010. ford should be responsible to repair this problem, i asked the customer service representative "is ford waiting until people get killed to fix this dangerous defect?". it is quite dangerous if it happens while driving in the express way at 55-60 mph in an inside lane. god help the escape owners. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Driving off exit ramp and escape went into "limp mode". this "limp mode" has happened on the highway and side roads 6 to 8 times. this throttle box replacement is at my expense. ford dealer will no cover,as i was told "the escapes do not have a throttle body issue." *tr

Vehicle lost throttle response, would not accelerate. had no prior warning/symptoms. check engine light (wrench) came on. pulled off to side of road, had to shut of and restart. throttle response returned. same incident happened the next day at approximately same speed. pulled off road, shut off and restarted. brought vehicle to dealer/repair shop and they replaced the throttle body assembly. *tr

The vehicle started stalling while approaching a traffic light and continued to stall to where eventually the gas pedal was non-operational. the car was taken to a ford dealership and a mechanic diagnosed that the throttle body was not operating properly and needed to be replaced. ford staff indicated the part is not covered under the power train warranty and the replacement part would have to be paid out of pocket at the owner's expense. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated while driving approximately 70 mph there was a complete loss of engine power followed by the illumination of the engine and wrench symbol warning indicators. after the vehicle was turned off and restarted it functioned normally. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the throttle body needed to be replaced; however, the part was on a massive back order. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 32,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while at a complete stop, the vehicle accelerated and crashed into a parking meter. there were no injuries. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection and they stated that the tires and brakes needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the consumer did not agree with the dealers findings. the consumer stated the tires and brakes were replaced on may 25, 2013

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while entering a parking space with the brake slightly depressed, the vehicle accelerated and crashed into a parking meter. there were no injuries. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for a diagnostic. the failure was reported to the manufacturer. the approximate failure and current mileage was 35,000. updated 07/01/13

Driving along down the driveway and the car went into slow mode. non-responsive to gas pedal, engine sputtering. happened to my wife earlier this week on the way to work. she pulled over, turned off the engine and restarted. drove fine then so she brought it home and switched cars. engine wrench light comes on but after restart disappears. hooked up to my obd scanner and it showed p2111 code. *tr

On the highway in the left lane - very busy area with traffic merging from right when engine stopped - no power at all. terrifying! luckily, i was somehow able to get across three lanes of high speed traffic to the breakdown lane. needed a tow to my ford dealer (55 miles). they diagnosed a defective electronic throttle control and due to the fact this part was backordered, i did not have a car for over a week. expensive fix. *tr

Going about 45 mph when all of a sudden the car started to coast, there was no warning light. i pushed the gas pedal to the floor and it was as though the car was not getting any fuel to the engine there was no acceleration. i coasted to a stop turned off the engine waited a few minutes turned the car on it seemed fine so i finished my errand. on the way home i was going approx. 50mph on the local highway and the same thing happened. took my car to a local ford dealer (i thought it was still under warranty) they said it would cost $900.00 to clean the throttle body as recommended by ford but they were not sure it would fix the problem. the throttle body part was on back order and they were not sure when they could get one. so now i have a car i am afraid to drive. *tr

While driving coming to complete stop to make turn press gas pedal engine lose all power and wrench indicator came of dashboard. pulled over to side of road out of traffic . turn engine off then turn engine back on wrench was gone & power return. problem existed 2 more times after this date. call ford service & took escape in for service for problem to be throttle body valve sticking as of 060613 still waiting on new part for escape. escape is at dealership since 06/03/13. *tr

In a 35 mph zone, when accelerating after slowing to allow vehicle in front to turn, throttle stuck open & car lost power. was able to get to side of road and restart car and proceed. same thing happened 4 additional times that day at various speeds accelerating to speed following a stop or using an on-ramp to highway speed. have experienced "surging" previously but dealer ignored reports as "intermittent". car was towed to dealer on 22 may and is still there awaiting a new throttle control body. shipment of new part is estimated as 17 june. dealer is not providing loaner or rental car as the part is not considered part of the powertrain & is therefore approx. 6 months out of warranty. since the car cannot "go" without the throttle control body - why is it considered part of the emission system vice the powertrain? with so many cars down for this part, it should be a recall. *tr

I will be driving along and the engine acts as if it didn't get enough gas and air mixture so it kicks out of shifting and just slows down then it starts hopping. it gives me a symbol on the dashboard of a wrench. i looked it up and it says it the throttle body. i had a mechanic come with his handheld computer and read the code and it says throttle aviator stuck open, then he erases the computer code nd i am able to drive until the next tome it happens. which it has happen everyday now since june 12th. ford has said that the part is being revamped and not sure when it will be available. my mechanic said that he has replaced many of these. why has it not been recalled? i have loses income because i do not want to be out on the road and have this happen when i'm on the highway with a semi behind me, then they will have a law suit to deal with. *tr

While driving down highway vehicle suddenly stalled and speed immediately dropped from 60 mph to 5 mph had to pull over to shoulder of road in heavy traffic and wait for tow. *tr

The first time i had just left a stop light and was accelerating and suddenly the vehicle lost acceleration and even with my foot pushing the gas pedal to the floor, it would not accelerate. i pulled over, let the car sit for a few minutes, cranked it back up and it drove fine for 2-3 weeks. (6/7/13) then after driving for 4 hours at highway speeds, this problem occurred again. it occurred three times before i got to my destination, all within a 30 minute timeframe. each time it was able to be corrected by turning it off and restarting. upon arrival at my destination i let the car sit for about 15 minutes then we took the car out again. it de-celerated one time at highway speed and one time at approximately 45 miles an hour. in this last set of occurrences the emission/check engine light symbol came on as well as the wrench symbol. both times it was again able to be restarted - the two times in this round of occurrences happened within 10 minutes of each other. the car then sat overnight (6/8/13) and as i pulled out of the driveway to take it to a mechanic yet another occurrence happened. again it was able to be restarted and i was able to drive to the mechanic and back (round trip of about 30 miles). while at the mechanic shop they ran a diagnostic and it came up as a problem with the throttle actuator control system. i do not have the error numbers at this time to notate. *tr

I am writing to you regarding an issue with my 2010 ford escape. i was driving on the highway around 65 mph when my car stalled. i was able to pull over but the car would not go over 5 mph. i was able to start the car up again and it seemed fine. later that day, i was accelerating from being at a red light and the car stalled again. i know there is an investigation into a throttle body recall. any information would be appreciated. *tr

While getting on the freeway the car slowed down on its own and almost stalled out (this occurred twice). it also occurred while driving and speeding up on the freeway where it slowed down to where it felt like it was going to stall out. it also occurred while driving on a street in the city after stopping at a stop light tried to hit the gas and the car felt like it was going to stall out. *tr

I was traveling 60mph, car suddenly stalled on the highway. gas paddle did not respond. engine light & wrench light was lit. stopped the vehicle completely & turn the engine off. waited couple of mins and start again. no wrench light but engine light goes off. now this happens every day. *tr

First it started with the engine light coming on. i had the codes read at a local auto parts store and they saw it was an "evap censor" and stated this is usually associated with a gas cap leaking. well, the escape we have doesn't have a gas cap!!! it's one of those "quick fuel, nascar type systems", where there is just a plug that retracts when you insert the gas nozzle and retracts when you're finished? secondly, the surging started happening while stopped at red lights. i would slide the gear into neutral, which would keep the vehicle from lunging, but you could still see the rpm's revving up and down. this issue went on for about two months. thirdly, it is now stalling while driving 50 - 60 mph down the highway. there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to when it happens, it just totally shuts down the engine!!! very dangerous. *tr

As vehicle was proceeding forward from a stop onto a four lane road with the speed limit of 35 mph, it rolled forward and no power was provided. no warning lights prior to this. the throttle control / power train light came on and we were only able to go approximately 20 -30 yards onto the shoulder attempting to go around the corner and up a hill the vehicle was unable to do this we rolled back to the shoulder then turned the car off restarted and the check engine light appeared and were able to get the car up the hill and home. car was towed to ford dealership where it was diagnosed as a failed throttle body which was then replaced.

5/17 while starting from a red light stopped, the vehicle accelerated but suddenly lost acceleration. wrench light came on. i was able to move the vehicle to a parking lot and call for a tow. the technician said the issue was with the fuel line and i had my vehicle back. 6/7 similar deceleration happened and this time the vehicle starting knocking a lot at low speeds. wrench and engine light came one. after turning off and starting again, the vehicle drove fine. i brought it home and one monday (6/10) started it again to take it to the dealer. the vehicle drove fine for half a mile before exhibiting the same behavior or deceleration and frequent knocking. i pulled the vehicle over and called the tow. i have been told by the mechanic that the throttle body needs replacing and it is back ordered nationally. *tr

While driving at approx 45mph, vehicle started to decrease in speed. pressing the gas pedal the rpms continued to decrease and car slowed to a stop without stalling. vehicle began sputtering and "wrench" light appeared on dash. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving 50 mph, the vehicle stalled with the illumination of the throttle sensor and check engine warning light. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where it was stated that the throttle body needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 65,000. *tr

Driving along around at 45 or 50 mph and went to turn on the air conditioner and the car stalled. i was able to pull over and the car restarted.. previous to this when turning on the ac the car got very sluggish, i was stepping on the gas but the car would not go. after a very short time the car recovered and normal speed was attained. i fear this may happen pulling into traffic or merging and this happening would be extremely dangerous and cause an accident. i was told by the dealership i bought the vehicle from that ford is having a problem with this part. when i searched the internet i saw that many others have had the same or similar issues with the 2005 -2011 escapes. i was also told that ford is doing a redesign of this part but no date as to when it would be available. my dealership stated they were able to find the same part but no promises if it would last. they also stated they could not duplicate the problem while in the shop, thus it's an intermittent occurence. they recommended just driving the vehicle and keeping in touch to see when the redesign is available. *tr

Driving 65 mph on interstate highway at 7:30 a.m. on may 13. suddenly, there was no longer power. the vehicle would only idle, not accelerate. the wrench light came on. after towing to the local ford dealer, i was informed that the vehicle would require a new throttle body. *tr

When driving in traffic, the car failed to accelerate, it rapidly lost power as if it were going to stall. i pulled over and restarted the car. at the time i had two small children in the car. *tr

Vehicle lost power while driving approx 40 mph. no response from the gas pedal. shut ignition off and car ran fine for a while. happened three more times. took vehicle to ford dealer for repair, they said it was a faulty throttle body. vehicle is still in shop as there apparently is a "national backorder" on the part - none available right now. *tr

Throttle, car stalls in the middle of traffic on highway and streets, no warning. *tr

I was driving to work going about 40mph when my escape lost power to the throttle. i had to pull over and shut it off. i waited a few minutes to start it again. it started and drove with no problem for a few minutes and then the same thing happened again. after looking for similiar problems online i found that it is the throttle body. *tr

On several occasions driving on the highway the vehicle speed goes down suddenly and all kinds of lights go on, and it dies after that. shut off the car wait 10- 15 minutes , restart the car and prying it will take me home safely, on one occasion the card died twice in a 20 miles trip. brought the car for diagnosis and i was told the throttle-body has to be replaced and it is not under warranty or a recall. the repair cost me $532 which i paid, later on i contacted ford corporate by phone and by email, and both told me that the repair is not covered, and they would not re-imburse me for the repair cost . i checked your website and i found almost 600 complaints similar to mine , in a way i felt i'm not alone ,on the other hand if ford has these too many complaints about the throttle - body for the 2010 ford escape , why they can not work with the nhtsa and issue a recall to replace that defective part before someone gets injured or dead by a rearend collision. please investigate this issue , thank you *tr

When driving the car, the gas pedal becomes useless and no longer accelerates the car. the engine is still on and all power is on in the car but you can't accelerate at all. very dangerous on the expressways as the car can just die and if you can't get over to the emergency lane.... you have to pull the car over, turn off and restart. seems to work for a while after that. has done this at different speeds, and several different times. my wife has had a few close calls with almost being rear ended due to this issue. ford knows about it but doesn't seem to have "enough" complaints to fix the issue... *tr

I was driving at highway speed when i heard a click from the car engine. acceleration gradually declined. the gas peddle did not respond. i pulled over to the side of the road and turned the engine off. as i was slowing to park, to turn off the car, the car surged several times. i was able to restart the car, with a hesitated start and get home. this happened 5 times over a two week period of time. i took the car to the ford dealership and had the electrical throttle body replaced. this corrected the issue. *tr

Was driving at speed of 65 on hwy on 5/3/2013 when vehicle lost all power, wrench light illuminated and vehicle came almost to complete stop although i had the accelerator completely depressed. could only drive about 1 mile per hour. pulled to side of road and tried to drive to repair shop but could not safely drive so stopped and called road side assistance. they suggested i call ford motor company and when i contacted them they instructed me to turn off engine and restart which i did, wrench light went out and was then able to proceed home. took vehicle to ford motor repair shop and they could not find anything wrong with vehicle and they did not tell me there have been any problems with make/model. talked to another repair shop and learned according to a technical bulletin there have been problems with throttle body of 2010 ford escapes manufactured from june 2009 to october 2009. this problem part was subsequently fixed on models manufactured after that time. mine was manufactured in september 2009. this needs to be fixed on all vehicles in the identified manufactured dates since it has obviously been identified by the ford company and ford repair shops should advise owners of the problem. i have no other means of transportation and live in the memphis area where there is heavy interstate traffic i can not safely drive this car in multiple lane traffic since it may suddenly lose power to 1-2 mph in the middle of 70 mph traffic. *tr

I was accelerating up the on-ramp to the bay bridge from san francisco late this afternoon. the car was responding to my foot on the pedal as the engine revved and i gained speed, then suddenly it stopped responding and slowed to a chug with my foot still on the pedal. the wrench light illuminated as i practically came to a stop with speeding traffic slamming on brakes behind me. i put on hazards, stopped car, turned off engine, restarted car and the wrench light was off but the engine light remained on for the entire time afterwards. when i would accelerate in drive, it would limp at about 4 mph. i could not go any faster. i was able to get over to the slow lane and tried to keep going. the caltrans service patrol truck pulled up behind me and escorted me over to the left lane where i proceeded slowly to the next exit. i eventually was towed to the ford dealer (where i bought the car) and had to leave it over the weekend. they charge a fee for diagnosis, but can't do it until monday, so i don't know what they'll find. from what i've read, other people describe very similar symptoms. this was an extremely dangerous situation in the middle of friday rush hour traffic. i was lucky no one was hurt. since we bought the car new, the acceleration sound has always been loud, and sometimes passing gear sounds like it's over-shooting. after i stop accelerating, it still keeps revving. however, this is the first time it has stalled. *tr
