ACCELERATOR PEDAL 1

Recently reported VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL problems on 2010 Ford Escape

I was taking the wife home from the hospital after she had surgery and the car stalled on me while i was pulling out into a busy highway and we were nearly hit. on the way home the car stalled and went into limp mode numerous times and we had to call a tow truck. the culprit was a malfunctioning throttle body assembly which the dealer told me was very common. i cant believe there hasn't been a recall on this as it is very dangerous. the car just stalls at random moments and the only way to get going again is to put the car in park, turn it off, and start it back up. the repair bill was $535.29 + towing costs. *tr

Backed out of parking space, wrench lit on dash, no throttle control, erratic idle. have a code scanner, it read p2111. placed in park, shut engine off and restarted, light went off. drive 5 minutes, wrench light came on again, no throttle control, erratic idle, codes p2111, p2112. almost got rear-ended. again put in park and restarted, made it home. this has happened 3 times before this in the last 2 weeks. very dangerous loosing power like that with no warning, i'm afraid to let my wife drive the vehicle, she is on the freeway more. i'm lucky to be on less traveled side roads where i can pull over to shoulder to restart vehicle. some say its the throttle body, others the electronic gas pedal. vehicle is out of warranty and i don't want to throw money at parts. ford should recall this. *tr

While driving, the vehicle will stall, or drop to about 800-900 rpm with no response from the accelerator. the "wrench" will come on the instrument panel, and the vehicle will sometimes stall/kill altogether. we have had the codes pulled by a technician, and they say that the "throttle body is stuck open", "the throttle body is stuck closed", and there is one more but i cannot recall it off the top of my head. i have called ford and they have said that they do not have a known issue, nor is this a familiar problem per the symptoms. i have likewise done an internet search and found several complaints, and an nhtsa investigation launched. please advise that this is a major security concern for me - yesterday i was traveling in the left lane of a major freeway, at freeway speeds, when my vehicle seemingly stalled, dropped to 800 rpms, and i had to cross 3 lanes of rush hour traffic to pull over to the shoulder to shut my car off, put it in park, then start it back up and merge back into traffic, then have it repeat the problem less than a mile later. this is a huge problem, and if not fully addressed by ford, my fear is it is going to cause accidents if it hasn't already. thank you in advance for your follow-up and support. *tr

Throttle body replaced on 10/16/2013. merging onto interstate highway when sudden down shift and engine rev occurred. car would not accelerate when needed and pulled onto safety lane.. turned engine off and restarted, same thing occurred with acceleration at 60 mph and higher. very dangerous because car slows down dramatically and will not accelerate. *tr

Traveling on i 64 east toward richmond in the left lane at approx 70 mph in very heavy, fast moving traffic. the engine immediately begin to lose acceleration, the engine wrench icon came on, and the vehicle was rapidly slowing; depressing the accelerator had no effect. there was no left shoulder, and i had difficulty in maneuvering to the right side of the interstate due to traffic. this was quiet alarming. i called for assistance. after researching on internet for about 5 minutes, i started the car, cancelled the tow truck and continued. it appears that this is a common issue with the throttle body assembly and will become increasingly more frequent on my automobile. it is definitely a safety issue. *tr

While driving out of my subdivision, my ford escape lost all power. the engine was surging but the vehicle would not respond when pressing the gas pedal. i turned the vehicle off and restarted it, but the same problem occurred. the vehicle was towed to the dealership where a diagnostic test revealed a failed throttle body. even though my vehicle is slightly under the 5 yr/60,000 mile powertrain warranty, the dealership is insisting on using my extended warranty to cover the part which will cost me $100 deductible and i will be responsible for the most of the cost of my rental vehicle (extended warranty company only pays rental car for labor hours on vehicle repairs, the vehicle will not be pulled in for repair for several days). *tr

Occassionally, when the vehicle accelerates, usually between 0-50 mph, the gas pedal locks, the engine stalls, and the check engine light appears. the vehicle must then be placed into park and turned off. when turned back on, the check engine light disappears and the vehicle functions normally. this has occurred three times in three months, once while merging onto a highway and twice while accelerating from a stop. ford service explained this could be due to a failed throttle body part. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated while traveling approximately 60 mph, the vehicle suddenly lost acceleration power. the failure was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was 56,000.

While driving, the vehicle was not able to accelerate and the wrench light came on. after pulling over and restarting the vehicle, the vehicle would resume functioning properly for a very short period of time and then the same thing would occur once again. luckily, these events occurred on side roads and not the highway. this is very dangerous and should be recalled as a preventative measure. i would not drive the vehicle even to the dealer after the incidents. it is appalling that a prevalent incident is not being taken care of by the dealer. safety of customers keeps customers alive to be consumers. *tr

While traveling at approximately 45 mph ,vehicle dies,no power and the throttle position sensor comes on. *tr

Throughout all of last winter, i had issues with my 2010 ford escape stalling. this occurred countless times, and nearly caused many accidents. it most frequently occurred when it was very cold (zero or below), and on some occasions would stall numerous times in a row, or fail to re-start. no warning light of any sort ever came on. after paying well over $1000 to get various things "fixed" that i was told would solve the problem, it continued happening. then i received the first bulletin letter regarding throttle body issues and took my car to the ford dealership in south burlington, vt. they proceeded to tell me that because they couldn't duplicate the issue, or get a code, they couldn't help me. a few weeks later when it happened again, the wrench light came on for the first time, so i drove directly to the dealership again. i was told once again that they couldn't fix the throttle body issue, and tried charging me over $300 for diagnosing my car (looking into the issue of why the wrench was illuminated). i refused to pay, because this is a ford issue, it's well documented all over the internet, and it's something they need to pay for. my car is still not fixed. *tr

While drive down hwy at 60 mph , engine light/wrench came on and the engine went into slow speed at 900 rpm. also did it at low speeds while driving away from stopped. had to replace the throttle body control and problem went away. *tr

Surging/loss of rpm/power....defective electronic throttle body....had to be replaced....should be a recall on this part. *tr

While traveling 65 mph on the highway the vehicle suddenly lost all power and shuttered to a stop. throttle body replaced by ford dealer on 10/08/13. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle failed to accelerate with the illumination of the wrench warning icon. the vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road where the engine was turned off. there was a hesitation upon restarting but then the vehicle resumed normally. the failure recurred on a separate occasion. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis and informed that the throttle body would need to be replaced. the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 76,179.

As i pulled on to the highway the electronic throttle body malfunctioned almost causing an accident. the car lost power and the gas pedal had no effect. the check engine light and small wrench lights came on. after safely getting off the highway i shutdown the engine and when restarted all seemed fine, the warning lights were off and the gas pedal again worked. the similar event took place twice more on my short drive home, engine idle only with no ability to add power, turning the car off reset the system returning power. *tr

Throttle body quit functioning while driving down the road. this caused the vehicle to lose power in the middle of traffic which could have been very dangerous and possibly deadly. *tr

While driving freeway speeds, i lost power. wrench light came on, engine remained running and i limped to the side of the freeway. when re-starting car, problem disappeared. took car to private mechanic ([xxx]) and he could not find a problem in the computer history. he suspected throttle linkage. car drove fine until oct 25, 2013 when it recurred on the freeway. while coasting in the hov lane, we put vehicle in "neutral" and tried to restart, problem did not resolve. only after coasting to a stop and putting the vehicle in "park" and restarting would the problem re-set. very hazardous losing power at freeway speeds and trying to limp to the side. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

We were driving the car down the road and the gas peddle stopped working completely. we could not get out of the way of traffic for a bit. we pulled over, turned the car off. started back and it seemed to be fine. once we started back down the road it did it again. it seems to be happening more frequently and is very dangerous when pulling out into traffic. my car is under warranty and ford will not cover it. this seems to be a very well known issue with these cars. my question is, why has this not been a recall before someone gets injured? *tr

Had to replace throttle body on october 28 ,2013 after many times of truck stalling at speeds up to 40 mph. most of the issues occurred at speeds of less than 25 mph. the power train warning light (wrench light) and check engine light both would be illuminated. the car could be restarted after each issue. *tr

I was slowing down almost to a stop at a red light when the light turned green. as i tried to accelerate to continue through the intersection, my car suddenly would only go about 5-10 mph. i had to pull in front of moving cars to cross 2 lanes of traffic to pull over to a nearby gas station. my car was towed to a local ford dealership where the problem was diagnosed as the throttle body. apparently, this is a common problem with multiple ford models, yet there has not been a recall. i have already spent $90 for a tow and $30 for a rental car. the estimate for the repair is about $450. *tr

2010 ford escape. consumer writes in regards to vehicle decelerates without warning. *smd the consumer stated the deceleration, happened at different speeds. there was no jerking of the vehicle, no warning light illuminated. it just lost speed quickly. the only option the consumer had was to drive the vehicle from the passing lane to the shoulder, crossing several lanes of traffic, turn it off and re-start it. the first time it happened it ran fine afterwards for weeks. the second time it happened, the same thing, but the third time it happened the vehicle decelerated four times within 15 minutes.

Driving to kansas from iowa on the interstate at 65 mph we suddenly stalled and lost our power steering. we were in heavy traffic which was quite scary. pulled over to the side of the road stopped, put the car in park and started the car back up. continued down the road only to have it happen again within 2 minutes. this happened multiple, at least 20 times until finally the car would not respond to the gas pedal. we would step on the gas but the engine would not respond. then we turned the car off, waited a minute and tried it again until we could get back on the road. the last 13 miles of our trip took over a hour. took our car to the dealership the next day and they replaced the throttle body which cost us 462.57. the mechanic told us this is a recurring problem and there will most likely be a recall. the error codes were p2111 and p2112 throttle body stuck open and closed. the next day we had a tire blowout on the interstate, which was also scary and in heavy traffic, because we spent so much time on the shoulder of the road which cost us another 180 dollars. i would like to see this recalled as a safety defect. *tr

Driving about 55-60 when the car lost power , pulled over and the car would run at a slow idle. i shut he car off and it restarted drove about another 6 miles and it did it again. had it repaired today, and told my 60,000 mile power train warranty does not cover this, neither does the engine. replaced the throttle body. *tr

My son was driving to a school event saturday night when the car stalled and the throttle position light came on. he was able to get it of the side of the road safely. i put a scanner on the car and it said throttle control module was stuck open, but when i started the car it ran fine. i think this is a serious issue that needs address by ford. *tr

I was driving on the interstate in tampa, fl (speed limit 70 mph) and the traffic was fairly heavy. the vehicle suddenly decelerated (the gas pedal was unresponsive) from 70 mph to 0 mph. this forced me to make an emergency change of two lanes to get to a place i could pull off safely. i coasted to a shoulder some distance up the road as there were concrete barriers that immediately bordered this stretch of highway where the incident occurred. multiple cars had to slam on brakes and make last-minute lane changes to avoid colliding with other vehicles now forced to do a fraction of the speed limit. very scary. once stopped the suv idled heavily around 1000rpm and then cut off. i called a mechanic who stated to try the car again and it started fine but with check engine light on. was able to drive to mechanic with this incident happening only one more time (this time i stayed next to emergency lane with my hazards on) and he stated it was code p2112 which on looking up, is an ongoing issue with multiple ford escapes 2009-2012 models. this was very dangerous and when looking up info, it shows there is an investigation with the nhtsa as of last year but no info since. this is happening frequently, my spouse and i were so very lucky that nothing happened to us. i am now taking the vehicle to ford who states it is, of course, not under warranty. how is this not a recall when you can find many many complaints about this same thing happening all over the internet. also, i saw some reviews where drivers have had this replaced more than once! scary happenings. please look into this situation and ensure ford makes this right. i am concerned about driving it and scared to put my child in the vehicle knowing that when it is fixed, that according to reports, it has happened again. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving 35 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer for a diagnostic test. the dealer stated that the throttle body was defective and needed replacing. the dealer replaced the throttle body. the failure mileage was 32,000. the vin was not available.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving various speeds, he attempted to make a turn when suddenly the engine stalled with the illumination of the warning indicator. the vehicle resumed normally once restarted. the failure recurred once. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnosis where the technician replaced both the throttle body and motor assembly. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 46,230. updated 11/13/13*lj

With cruise control engaged at 55 mph, the vehicle suddenly disengaged cruise control and went to an extremely rough idle with the vehicle shaking like a leaf in the wind. had to exit highway through traffic as the throttle would not respond in any position. it was early morning with light traffic thankfully. this could have been different if the problem had occurred later in the day during heavy traffic.

Sitting at a traffic light, when it turned green attempted to accelerate, throttle became unresponsive immediately and the powertrain system fault light came on. after turning off the ignition the car started back up with out incident and continued the drive that day. about 1 week later, had the same thing happen twice in one day and then four times the next. of the seven total incidents, 3 of which happened in major intersections blocking flow of traffic and turned me into a safety hazard. *tr

Traveling on a major highway in the middle lane at 8:30 pm the truck started to hesitate and act like it wasn't running right. then i lost total control of the accelerator but the car was still running. i had all i could do to try to coast over to the shoulder of the road to try and figure out what was wrong. noticing that the accelerator did not engage at all, i turned off the truck and was going to call for a tow truck. that's when i decided to try and start it to see if i could get home on my own. once i started the truck, it was like nothing happened and i continued home making it without a problem. since then this has happened 3 other times, always on the highway, and the last 2 times it happened it, once the truck started back up and i drove off, i only got @ 3 miles down the same highway and it happened again, so i just repeated the procedure and hasn't happened since. i have gone ahead and purchased the new throttle body and am having my mechanic install it this week. i will be driving @ 60 miles one way, 120 miles total, a day for work starting this week and i can't afford to get stranded that far from home and loose time from work or not be able to get home. i've been told that at one point and time that the truck won't just start back up every time, so i'll be getting it fixed. very disappointed that the truck that i purchased in april and only has @ 44000 miles on it would have such a major problem with such an important component. i've been told that they can't keep them on the shelves because there is such a huge problem overall. this can be very dangerous to someone who wouldn't know what to do in a crisis situation. on the box for the part it says ford genuine parts, made in mexico. nice!! maybe you want to rethink where you locate your parts factories. you know the old saying " nothing good is cheap and nothing cheap is good". *tr

When the ford escape is driving and stops at a light the engine starts to riddle. once you hit the gas the car goes into second gear then the gas pedals stops working. can't use the gas pedal. *tr

Tonight i was driving home doing about 55mph when my vehicle suddenly shuddered and lost all power. luckily i was able to coast it to where it was mostly off of the road. it did not die but continued to shake while in high idle. the power steering was not working properly and no engine lights came on. pushing the gas pedal produced zero results. i shut it down and pondered whether to try and start it back up or just call a tow truck. being out in the country i decided to take a chance. it started up and ran fine...for less than two miles...when it repeated the same scenario only in a much more dramatic loss of power shudder and real rough idle. wrench light came on. i took a picture of the display panels. didn't notice the loss of power steering that time and the engine did not die. called the dealership... no tow truck available. took my chances again and drove it to the dealership since it was only a few miles further then going home. didn't have any problem during that drive but detected an engine whine sound that i had never noticed before. vehicle has 53,393 miles on it. engine was pulled at 8k for oil leaks. have had numerous incidents of shifting clunking sound at take off over the life of it. have had brakes fail in reverse. always pump them before backing out of my garage to make sure they're working ok that day. all work, right down to tire rotations have been done only at the dealership i purchased this brand new at. luckily i purchased an extended warranty. guess i'll learn tomorrow what's up with it this time. sad to have a $28,000 vehicle that i've never really trusted since its early failure. just thankful i wasn't still on the interstate moving along in 70+ mph rush hour traffic. i will never trust this vehicle again after experiencing this. *tr

When attempting to accelerate from a stop the throttle did nothing. it barely moved. pulled off to side of road and restarted. after a bit it started up and drove fine for another 5 miles but then it happened again. pulled off road, restarted and returned home as i was too afraid to continue driving it. taking it to mechanic today to have it diagnosed. during the drive home the transmission was shifting early and otherwise acting slightly strange. *tr

Defective throttle body was replaced by ford 9/17/2013. *tr

First incident sept 13, 2013. traveling at a speed of 55mph on highway 32 when a sensation of someone just pulling the plug on the engine fuel intake. there was no response at all when pushing the accelerator pedal. the vehicle remained idling and i was able to pull safely off the road into a nearby parking lot. i was able to maneuver it still while idling, to position the vehicle of possible towing. i had left the vehicle idling and called my local ford dealer. they asked me if i had "cycled" through by turning the motor off and trying to restart. i told them i had not. they told me to turn it off and let it sit for a few minutes and try to start it and see if the electronic throttle body would reset itself. i did and it did reset. second incident sept 16, 2013. car was parked in my driveway on slight incline. i put into reverse to exit the driveway. once in the street i put into drive to start going forward and there was not response at the accelerator, just like the first time. i turned the car off and let it sit for a minute and restarted it. throttle body had reset and i proceeded on my way again. *tr

While driving on the highway my truck lost speed. i kept pressing the gas and it didn't want to move anywhere. the wrench light came on. seems to be something related to the throttle. my vehicle was purchased in september 2009. this seems to be the same issue related to the investigation on vehicles unexpectedly going into "limp home mode" at reduced power and problems with the throttle. *tr

Was driving to work and the little wrench symbol lit up as my car lost its acceleration. it still idled, but wouldn't move forward. i was able to drift to the side of the road. turned off the engine and restarted it, drove another 5 feet and it happened again. i was able to pull off into a parking lot and wait for a tow truck to tow my vehicle to the ford dealer. it was found that the throttle body was faulty but the ford dealer said it was not covered under my warranty. *tr

I was driving down the road when all the sudden i car lowered speed super fast, so o had to pull over and turn the card off. let it sit for about 2-5 minutes then started back up. it is getting worse and it happened 7 times in one day. *tr

While accelerating and switching from first gear, engine slows to rough idle, no throttle response, wrench light comes on, no check engine light though. seems to be able to creep to the side of road but no real power or control of throttle. idle and rev the engine after restart are ok but seems to have trouble under the heavier load of pulling second gear then rather than switching back to first the software crashes or something. stupid way to handle a problem on fords end. *tr

Traveling at 60 mph on the highway, vehicle suddenly lost acceleration and the yellow wrench light came on. coasted to the side of the road and put vehicle in park. pushed down on accelerated, but no response. shut down vehicle. waited a few moments. vehicle started again. drove directly to dealership. after two days, they were unable to diagnose a problem. that was five days ago. this evening, it happened again. vehicle is returning to dealership along with several articles regarding ford's throttle body issue. i have also filed a complaint with ford on their website. *tr

After stopping at a stop light i proceeded to accelerate through the intersection when my ford escape began to jerk, then seemed to die in the middle of the intersection. there was no check engine light on and after listening to the engine i realized that it was still running, but there was no gas getting to the engine when i pressed on the accelerator. i let the car roll out of the intersection, turned off the engine and restarted it. after another mile upon stopping before making a left hand turn it stopped again after gaining up to about 10 mph. i turned the engine off again and when attempting to start it cranked, but would not turn over. on my third attempt to restart the engine it turned over and the check engine light came on. *tr

I was driving vehicle onto entrance ramp of freeway when the power suddenly cut out and the car coasted. the "wrench" light illuminated on the dashboard. i was able to steer the vehicle to the side of the road. i called a ford dealer and had the vehicle towed. the throttle body had a fault in the system and was replaced at a cost of nearly $300. *jb

Stopped at light. got to 20 mph then engine shut off. coasted 50 feet shifted to neutral restarted car shook, but got me to safety. got towed. error code p2112. *tr

Driving about 30mph and car suddenly stops accelerating and won't go, doesn't die but the"throttle control/powertrain" symbol comes on. i shut car off and restart and proceed to drive again and it happens a 2nd time. i have learned that this is happening in these models and i think something should be done about it! *tr

Vehicle would not accelerate, would miss fire and stop running. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while traveling 70 mph, the vehicle suddenly lost acceleration power. the vehicle was diagnosed by the contact, who found that the throttle body had failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was 74,217.

Was driving on the freeway and car started to jerk and i started to lose speed even though i was stepping on the gas nothing was happening. i was able to pull over safely to shoulder and put the car into park while the car was shaking violently and turn it off, waited a few minutes and with hesitation it started back up and i was able to continue home.. happened a second time the very next day only doing 25 and a wrench indicator light came on and again no gas or speed from the pedal was able to shut it off restart and continue home.. very scary and dangerous situation it needs to be addressed.. *tr

Began at idle at stop light/sign; rpms go up/down then stall. then while driving approx 45 mph, car does a "thud", doesn't stall, but gas peddle no longer works, you can push it to the floor and nothing. i turned on my flashers, coasted off side of road and stopped. shut engine off and restarted it. 2nd time, while going threw a huge, busy intersection at rush hour, car started jerking, gas peddle quit working, almost got rear-ended, whole family was with me; rolled off side of road, turned car off and restarted it. when turning key on it would make the repeated start sound before it actually started. when the "thud" happens the "wrench" light eliminates on my dash, but once i shut off key and restart, the "wrench" light goes away. i took it to the dealership and they told me it was a "canister purge valve" that needed replacing and wanted to charge me $390 to fix. i paid them the $92 diagnostic fee and my husband paid $42 for the part and replaced it himself. only my problem still exists as that wasn't the problem at all. i called ford back today explaining it happened to me again today while turning a corner at 15 mph and they then guessed it was the "throttle body" and i have to take it back in to the dealership tomorrow! my friend with same yr, make and model of escape was on the hwy and it happened last week; she almost got hit by a semi truck!! *ln *tr

Car throttle almost stalls to rough idle , sputters but cannot give it gas or rev engine wrench symbol lights up you must turn off car to restart after about 10 times and it happening every mile or so the check engine light is on and stays on even after restarting. this will happen out of nowhere while driving at any speed but idles just enough to pull over to safety ! restart and drive a mike and either just idling or accelerating it just quits going . i called taylor ford and was told i was out of warranty but need throttle body and approx $450 ! so they too know it's an issue! *tr
