Recently reported STEERING problems on 2010 Ford Escape

I was driving on the freeway and my steering wheel froze, i was not able to move it. it was the scariest thing. there was an immediate ding in my car and it said power steering assist fault, or similar. i was able to get to work (thank goodness) and called the ford dealership, i called my insurance company and had it towed to them because the steering wheel was so hard to turn, i was afraid i would not be able to turn left or right. i do not know if they will honor recalls from reading numerous issues with responses i have read, they are no longer honoring them. i am a 2nd owner of the car and did not know anything about this. this should be an ongoing recall, this was very scary and if my kids were in the car... this is a huge safety issue... without warning it goes out? this could have ended a lot worse. *tr

A few weeks ago i began noticing that my steering wheel would vibrate (really more of a jerking back and forth motion) while the car was idling. soon it was doing it every time the car slowed or stopped. now i can feel the jerking of the wheel even while driving. i took the car in to a firestone for service who told me that this was part of a ford recall (14-s05) and that i needed to take it to a ford dealership. the ford dealership is telling me that the recall is closed and that i need to pay $1000 for a new steering column. i called ford who said that there is nothing they can do. this is a major safety issue as the power steering can completely go out (which they know). many others have had issues getting ford to honor the recall and fix their steering column. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 65 mph, the steering wheel started to independently veer to the right. in addition, the contact stated that the steering wheel started to shake while driving at various speeds. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the torch sensor failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 86,456. *tr

I received a recall letter for my 2010 escape concerning the electrical power steering system. when the car was taken to the dealer there were no codes but they "reprogrammed" the sensor. now two years later the torque sensor has gone bad cause the power steering to stop work while driving. when i go back to the dealer they say they wont do anything since it was reprogrammed already. the safety issue still exist.

In july 2014, ford issued a recall (14s05/nhtsa recall 14v-284) for defective torque sensors (for power steering). my vehicle was recalled. ford had an option of re-programming or replacing the part. although i wasn't experiencing a problem at the time, ford reprogrammed my vehicle in july 2014. but in jan. 2017, the defective part failed and the power steering was lost while driving on a local street.. i had to replace the torque sensor at the ford service dealer in putnam, ct at a cost of over $500. i ended up paying to replace an admittedly defective part which should have been the responsibility of ford. i believe the re-programming did not address the issue and that the defective part should have been replaced. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. while driving 20 mph, the vehicle stalled and the power steering assist warning message appeared. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the vehicle was serviced per nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering), but the remedy failed to repair the vehicle. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 105,000.

I had my car programming updated and just recently, my power steering went completely out which is causing me to need my whole steering column replaced. i contacted ford, however, they stated since they "closed" recall 14s05, they would not cover the damages. my car has been in the shop for a week now as i battle with ford. ford and sterling mccall are rude and will need assist with this issue as the recall repair has failed the 1st time and now the power steering will need to be replaced. i was in motion with my 6 month old daughter when the steering when out, but luckily we were able to avoid an accident.

We have a ford escape with 76000 mi. the steering went out as we driving . ford said it would cost 1400 hundred dollars. pay it. *tr

Steering wheel vibrates and entire car shakes when stopped or moving. sometimes you can reduce the severity of it by applying a slight turn of the wheel, but even then it often starts again. it even occurs at highway speed and is very distracting.

My daughter [xxx]- while driving power steering failed- locking up the steering wheel and making it very difficult to turn the vehicle. "power steering assist fault" warning light on dash- brought to saxon ford, mpls to discuss- said nor recall even though web is full of this same problem with vehicle said this one not in recall. $950 later replaced the power steering torque sensor- (code dtc2278) (but now horn does not work ) information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Steering column not working stationary or in motion

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. while driving approximately 35 mph, the power steering suddenly malfunctioned and caused the steering wheel to become very difficult to turn. during the incident, the "power steering assist fault" warning message displayed. the cause of the failure was not diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 114,000.

Ford escape power assist steering recall just purchased vehicle oct 14 2016. nov 7,2016 the power steering assist went out when making a left turn at 10mph. found out there was a recall on this, took to dealership & they told me no recall on this vehicle was found. dealership wants $700 to fix. contacted ford customer support & was informed that a system update was done in aug 2014 for the recall. on 2nd call to ford cust spt, a "investigation" was opened & sent to dealership to have them try to work with it. after numerous phone calls, both the dealership & ford cust support were both putting it off on the other to work with the issue. i feel that this recall should be an ongoing recall if they are only going to do the system update & not replace the steering shaft torque sensor on the first occurrence, or that the steering shaft torque sensor should just be replaced instead of a system update at no cost to the vehicle owner. there are too many complaints that i've read in the last 48hrs of this happening over & over again to people who've had only the system update. i'm currently waiting on a phone call from the dealership to have this situation taken care of, on their part. i will not stop voicing myself, on behalf of others who've had this same issue happen to them, more than once!!

2010 ford escape was stationary when an error message appeared on the dashboard indicating "power steering fault." the wheel would turn but only with great effort. my mechanic indicated the power steering module needed to be replaced and is covered by a ford recall. further investigation revealed that, while subject to the ford recall, the dealer "updated the software" and ford would not repair the faulty power steering module. power steering modules should not fail. if they are prone to failure they should be recalled and replaced.

Steering wheel shake vehicle is parked running at idle and the steering wheel shakes back and forth with out touching it. this shake also occurs while driving down the road at 55 mph. *tr

Complete loss of power steering 65 miles per hour i 94 dry pavement

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact received a recall notice for nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the vehicle was taken to mike white ford of coeur d'alene (315 w clayton ave, coeur d'alene, id 83815, (208) 664-9211), but the part was not available. instead, the dealer updated the software. in addition, the contact stated that the electric power steering indicator flashed and the steering wheel was extremely difficult to turn in either direction. the dealer diagnosed that the torque sensor needed to be replaced. the remedy was not provided and the contact was expected to repair the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failures and provided a case number. the failure mileage was not available.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact took the vehicle to fox grand traverse ford lincoln mercury (3464 us-31, traverse city, mi 49684, (231) 922-2000) to be repaired per an unknown recall, but the power steering assist unit that the dealer performed a computer update on malfunctioned. as a result, the contact's vehicle did not have power steering ability. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer who claimed that the recall repair was performed and attempted to charge the contact for the repairs. the manufacturer advised the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer where he would be charged for the repairs. the failure mileage was 145,268. the vin was unknown.

When i was taken a left turn, in the middle of that turn the power steering went out. it all most cause a accident. ford had a recall on a software upgrade last year an, because i had this done they will not cover any of the cost for repairs.

this can happen any time the engine is stop, while park at home, shopping any where the engine is stop . to start the key in inserted to steering column opening and it will not engage properly at times it takes to move back and fort the key while inserted and it will start, this is happening more often now. took the escape to grand prairie ford texas and they said it was the steering column lock module need to be replace plus an alignment total for $787.65 understand that the 2009 escape has the same problem but ford has issued a recall on it but not the 2010, this is rather absurd since the know the problem. now i have the choice to repair or drive until the key no longer works, what a choice, i'm a widower , retired and live on ss, thanks ford.

The ignition switch on my vehicle no longer works and has to be replaced. this is a recall for the 2009 ford escape but not the 2010 and ford is telling me i have to pay between $500 and $600 to fix something they know if broken. the advisor even told me that ford is aware it is the exact same parts in the 2009 and 2010 that is broken but ford will not issue a recall until enough people complain about the issue. what kind of crap is that. so i now have a vehicle i am still making payments on because i purchased it preowned and cannot drive it because ford has defective parts in the vehicle and refuses to own up to it until enough people come forward to complain about it. i spoke with an advisor at the five star ford in plano, texas.

A recall was issued in 2014 for the power steering. i took my vehicle to the dealer and the "fixed" the recall in oct of 2014. today the power steering failed while my husband was driving the car. he was also making a turn in a busy intersection. had i been driving, i would not have been able to control the car with manual steering and may have caused an accident. i have put less than 20k miles on the car since the "fix" but i am outside the 2 year or 12,000 mile warranty period for the recall. it takes my about 30 seconds to find others on forums that this exact same thing has happened to. i don't think a software fix (which is what was done) was the appropriate fix for a determined faulty part, the torque sensor. ford needs to do the right thing and recall the part and not take the easy way out and do a software update.

My 2010 ford escape has a misfire between the steering or ignition column and the electrical system, the car rides very rough and has lost power steering during driving on a highway, brought into ford dealership and they said no recall for the parts needed to repair, i read thenhtsa reports and read all the facts that happened to my car it said it is the control module and instrument cluster module.. but dealership said no recall.

Takata recall

Power steering suddenly went out while my wife and her client were parking at a retail store. power steering has not returned since. my wife was able to park the vehicle safely but not able to steer it to move the vehicle anywhere after that (i had to wrestle with the steering to move the vehicle to a repair facility). the local ford dealership diagnosed this as a torque sensor failure. recall 14s05 service was performed in 2014 in as much as the software for the system was updated -no parts were replaced. ford has stated that the torque sensors in the affected vehicles are known to be faulty yet, when a unit fails (like mine) after the software has been updated, they refuse to fix it. my vehicle has just over 83,000 miles which is well below the reasonable life expectancy for a torque sensor. ford customer service and recall departments have refused any further remediation.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. while driving at various speeds, the vehicle became difficult to steer and shook. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the instrument cluster module would need to be replaced. the vehicle was previously serviced under nhtsa campaign number: 14v4280000 (steering), but the remedy failed to repair the vehicle. the contact mentioned that the vehicle had experienced no failures before the recall. since the software update, the vehicle experienced issues with the steering. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 129,000.

Power steering stopped working as i drove. googled, lots of problems, bad part in steering column, some recalled not this vin. should be.

Intermittent power steering failure. this failure has happened four times in the past year. the power steering failed at low and moderate speeds, on city streets, without warning. this issue is very dangerous and could easily case an accident. i have contacted customer service and have been referred to a local dealer to investigate the problem.

Vehicle was taken into ford dealership to have recall 14s05c performed (sept 2015). at that time there were no diagnostic trouble codes showing in the power steering control module. in jan 2016 on 3 separate occasions the steering wheel shook back and forth and a chime sounded while the vehicle was in gear and stopped at a stop sign. no light was left turned on on the dashboard. i read the service codes from the power steering control module and code b2278 was present. upon returning to the dealership i was informed that ford is not responsible for replacing the failing part (that would have been covered under the recall if the code was present when i first brought the vehicle in).

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. while driving 70 mph on the interstate, the power steering failed without warning. in order to drive the vehicle and feel safe, the vehicle was driven home via back roads. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the switch in the steering column and the power steering motor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was in the process of being repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 95,200.

I was making a long distance road trip and began to notice subtle vibrations in the steering wheel. the vibrations began to increase in intensity over time, most noticeably when the car was at idle. at one point the vibrations were very intense during idle. after a rest stop i turned the car on and tried to turn the steering wheel but had much difficulty. the electronic power steering assist was not functioning. i had previously brought my escape to a ford dealership for recall #14s05 where they updated the pscm to address the issue i was experiencing now. the torque sensor has failed causing the epas to shut off even after my car was supposedly fixed a year prior. ford has failed to address the issue fully and the work done to correct recall #14s05 is insufficient.

Ford only put a alarm on during recall taken back 2 months later to be told would not cover cost of ecm sensor which cost $500.00. this is a safety issue that ford will not cover. they found a way around replacing it with a alarm. how are you able to safely steer the vehicle going 55 when the alarm goes off the side of the rode. this is very daugerous. it went out twice on me. this needs to be looked in to immediately.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. while driving 55 mph, the steering wheel shook and became difficult to steer. the power steering fault warning light illuminated and the vehicle was pulled to the side of the road and shut off. the vehicle was restarted and the failure recurred. the vehicle was towed to a local mechanic where it was diagnosed that the steering assist motor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 121,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. while driving less than 10 mph, there was a power steering failure and sudden loss of power. the contact was able to pull the vehicle over to the side of the road by applying force to the steering wheel. the contact mentioned that when the vehicle was turned off and later restarted, the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the torque sensor and the steering column needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no remedy. the approximate failure mileage was 34,500. updated 01/12/16*lj updated 02/01/16.*jb; updated 04/25/18*jb *tr

The power steering fails constantly, looked up and found plenty of recall information on it. take it to dealerase and they say no recall, although it matches everything in the recall i'm currently looking at on this website. they refuse to do anything about it. called their corporate office and was given the same info.

Power steerin assist fault warning came on while driving on highway. i pulled over to see what that ment in my vehicle manual. when i started the car back up i could not manage to turn the steering wheel to continue to drive and had the car towed. there is a recall for this exact problem,(steering torque sensor), yet ford motor company will not honor it with my car, since it is not listed on the recall list.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. while driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle lost steering power and the power assist failure light illuminated on the instrument panel. the contact pulled the vehicle over to a parking lot and called a local dealer. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the power steering angle sensor was replaced. a few days later, the contact noticed that the steering wheel felt weird and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer. the dealer diagnosed that the power steering rack needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the local dealer. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 68,415.

My vehicle is displaying the electric steering assist failure warning and the steering wheel is shuddering at all speeds. the steering wheel also pushes back at times. problem started at 115,000 miles. i have had extensive communication with fmc and they steadfastly refused to admit any liability. they say that they will never fix this issue under any circumstances unless the federal government forces them to do so. they suggest that i have a dealer fix it at my expense. there have been many reports of instantaneous failures resulting in loss of control. this is an inherent problem with all second generation escapes. over 1 million ford vehicles have the faulty components. ford is stonewalling the problem in an attempt to avoid the multi billion dollar tab. you must act quickly! most of us do not have $1500 to replace the electric steering unit. many will continue to drive and endanger others in rapidly increasing numbers. i can send my communication with fmc.
