I had purchased a used escape, in very good condition, in aug 2014. i bought from the original owner, a family member, with only 55k mileage over their 10 years of ownership (they were upgrading). i drove the car an additional 1,500 miles here (to 56k, total) over my first two months of ownership, and the car had passed all its regular annual inspections. suddenly one night on the road the car's engine began chugging when i attempted to travel beyond 45mph, and a blinking yellow check engine light appeared. upon restarting that indicator did not come back on, but the engine was still sluggish and so i attempted to coast home at managed speeds (as i was only a mile away) to have a mechanic check it out during business hours. i didn't even make it home. the engine light went on full and i soon lost power completely, with barely enough notice to pull off the 6 lane highway. the sudden power loss seemed very unsafe as i had to steer manually with no power steering nor acceleration. after the car stalled out it would not even restart for a long period of time. i towed it to a mechanic the next day and they read me a long list of error codes that had been identified, all of which went back to the power control module (pcm) failure, apparently, as described in tsb 10-18-10. i have been told by two different mechanics, including my local ford dealership, that it would cost at least $2,000 to service the pcm and replace all affected spark plugs, coils and cylinders. despite the very low mileage below the 80k pcm warranty, the vehicle reacted rather sporadically and unpredictably and it created an unsafe condition. i would have liked to have been informed sooner of this known issue. there should have been a recall notice since the pcm is known to cause a hazard. i now see that there are 113 complaints logged at carcomplaints.com, citing similar pcm and/or engine problems. *tr

I bought a used 2005 ford escape limited 6 days ago it was running fine no problems lights or warnings. then i was driving down the highway accelerating to 50mph and my dashboard lit up like a christmas tree and stopped running. i towed it back to where i got it and they stated that the computer waa fried. now i am waiting for them to replace it. i have seen similiar complaints about the same model and year. fried computer due to ignition coils. i believe with as many complaints about this recurring problem there should be a recall, but i guess we have to wait till someone dies because of it. a shame that's the only way things get done. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 25 mph, all warning lights started blinking and illuminating on the control panel. the contact mentioned that immediately after the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic but no repairs had been made. the dealer was contacted and stated that the transmission needed to be pull apart to determine if the torque converter caused the failure. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 76,382.
I just bought this car and my check engine light came on. i took it to the mechanics and they fixed one of the coils. it still did the same thing after i got it back[ sputtering]. i went to wal-mart and coming back it cut off on me. luckily i was at a stop, but ifi had of been going at full speed it would have hurt me and my seven year old because since it has power steering, when it cut off the steering wheel goes stiff. from what i have seeon the internet this is a common problem and the ford place will not do anything about it. please investigate it. i think that this would help other people. *tr

My 2005 ford escape 3.0 v6 had a coil issue that ford knew about and sent service bulletins to dealers, but not the affected parties. the coils were defective from a vendor and when they failed, burnt out the psm, making the automobile unusable and expensive to fix. ford has known about this since 2011 and has done nothing to rectify it, or help, all of those whose escapes have stopped running completely. mine had this go out and now the parts are on back order for months, as well as incredibly expensive. please help to get ford to order a recall on this for all of us. *tr
I turned a corner and was only going 20 mph when the vehicle went dead. i had no control so luckily i wasn't going fast. i stopped the vehicle. i had to get it towed. one mechanic said my coils and spark plugs were bad because of the fuel rail pressure sensor malfunction. second opinion - the pcm needed to be reprogrammed or replaced. third opinion - all of the above. it costs $1900 and two tow bills ($275). the engine light had been on for several months. the only code was the fuel rail pressure sensor high input (p0193 generic). *tr

Ford customer care case #cac-4150994-b2g8c6 & #4151017-n07b9 this was the 2nd major incident; the first occurred in 1/2009. the second major occurrence was 2/2014, when the check engine light came on and the vehicle very quickly lost all power and engine shut off, the power steering and power brakes also did not respond. the vehicle would not restart and had to be towed a ford dealership. the dealer stated the pcm had failed causing the coils and spark plugs to also fail. the vehicle was at the dealership for 2 weeks waiting for a replacement pcm; dealer stated there was a shortage of pcm availability due to an extremely high nationwide demand for the part. dealer replaced the pcm, as well as all coils and spark plugs in mid march 2014; the total cost of was, $2,875.70. the pcm, coils and plugs had also been replaced in 1/2009 for the same failures. coils and plugs were also replaced an additional 2 more times between 2009-2014. when the pcm fails, the vehicle immediately looses all power, steering and brakes, and stops dead in its tracks and cannot be restarted causing a potentially catastrophic situation. had this failure occurred in traffic, a major collision would have been eminent and a fatality probable. when i contacted ford on 3/19/2014, they stated they are aware of the issue and assigned 2 customer care case numbers; but they refused any reimbursement or compensation of any kind. the multiple incidents of defective pcm failures should be investigated as a potentially deadly safety issue.
Traveling on the highway at 55 miles per hour and the entire engine stalled and cut off. i had the car towed to a local shop where they told me that 3 out of the 6 coils basically were not working and the pcm/computer was completely shot, they wanted over $1600 at dealership to fix this. ford had apparently distributed a bulletin about this problem to the dealerships but not their customers - who this problem affects the most. i was lucky that i was able to pull over to the side of the road and not hit anyone or get killed. i can't imagine how many people this has affected because it is all over the internet. the repair ended up costing well over $1000 because of the spark plugs that ford knew were faulty years ago. a simple changing of the spark plugs instead of six coils. i see no difference in gm having to recall vehicles that shut off on the highway and ford having to recall these vehicles for basically the same reason and reimburse their customers, our cars are shutting off too. *tr

My son was driving the car and it started to sputter. did the same thing the next time it was driven and has ever since. i had it to two mechanics which said that the #4 was misfiring and start coil problem. replaced.. not working still. have talked to two dealerships about it one told me to have it towed to them. going to one closer so that i can talk to them. both say there is a problem. from what i have read ford company has not issued a recall to fix it. not sure if i will be able to afford it. i prefer ford but may have to go with a different ford vehicle. we have had everything else but there is nothing like a ford. our last ford truck was a 93 and we just got rid of it a year and a half ago still running. i do not want to give up on my fords. *tr

The car would not run got it to the repair shop. told me it was the pcm, 6 coils and spark plugs all needed to be replace ($2k to fix). i called ford they seem to know about this issue. told me even though the car is an 05 it was made in 04 so they could not help. i was told there was a program to fix this issue had to be within 8 years and 80k miles. bad spark plugs are to blame. i disagreed 05 to 2013 is 8 years, they say no because it was made 10/14/04 so it would put me at 9 years 71k miles. i argued it was sold in 05 and that is what they should go by, they disagreed. after researching this online several people have had this same issue with the same year make and vehicle. *tr
The gas pedal was stuck after mashing on it hard it broke loose when approching a stop sign i stopped and try to go again but gas pedal was stuck why is there not a recall. i also have transmission and rearend problems but they both are costly repairs i am concerned about the gas pedal please fix it before someone gets hurt there really should be a recall on it
Driving 55 mph on highway, car sounded like it downshifted into much lower gear (very loud) with jerky motion, immediately lost power, was climbing large hill, coasted to side of road in heavy traffic, lost power steering, made horrific grinding sound, and then stopped. idled for 30-45 seconds, all dashlights came on before dying on highway. i have reviewed carcomplaints.com on this model escape, they are notorious for pcm computer going with no notice. my mechanic informs me today that is the problem, cost for repair is about $2,000.00, not covered by the extended warranty i purchased. this is a well documented issue that clearly creates safety issues when driving at high rates of speed, with no warning. the car was "fine" by all other accounts, this happened out of no where. *tr
Within 1/4 mile of starting and driving from home, the engine began to run very rough, misfiring, idling rough, etc. pulled over, opened hood, engine was idling very rough. no check engine light. brought it back home. total trip was less than 1 mile. next day, started it up again, ran smoother, but had no power; very difficult to get above 20-30mph. brought it to repair shop. they determined that all three catalytic converters were clogged up from broken/melted catalytic converter internal parts. replaced all three catalytic converters, but repair shop could not determine the cause of the initial misfiring and catalytic converter damage. check engine light never came on at any time. total repair cost $2350.00. car had been in the same shop earlier that week for state inspection and lube-oil-filter. no issues found at that time. battery had failed two days before the problem, and was replaced the morning of the problem. the issue appeared upon first driving the car after the battery was changed. *tr

My wife was driving all of sudden vehicle kept accelerating without her foot being on the gas pedal. she was traveling at 25mph when vehicle accelerated to 45mph on its own. she had to take action to avoid having an accident. the vehicle now will rev high when first turning on vehicle. the longer vehicle runs the higher the engine revs and increases speed on its own. *tr

Vehicle was shipped to germany due to military duty. a week later after delivered, my wife was driving it going down a short hill when the vehicle turned off completely and brakes were not functioning. my wife had to stop the vehicle with parking brake. after that the engine was losing power and the alarm was going off very often. we drove the vehicle few occasions and it turned off couple of times again.i ordered the part and replaced it in 2014. the vehicle is running fine, however the alarm still going off and engine light is on again on dashboard. at this point i do not know if the vehicle is indicating the same problem or something new. *tr
I just purchased the vehicle used from ogden lincoln in westmont illinois. on the way home from the dealer, the engine stalled twice while approaching a stop. no warnings, the engine just stopped. on both occurrences, i was able to restart the vehicle right away. i've owned this vehicle less then 6 hours now and i'm afraid to drive it. *tr

I have a random incident with my ford escape 2005, where at times when on cruise control, the engine will accelerate unexpectedly. after many years of driving, and attempting to file a complaint about the issue with ford but refused as it wasn't reproducible when allotted, i think this issue occurs because the cruise control has self adjusted itself when towing a trailer. but after detaching the trailer and taking the truck for a long hilly ride, the engine computer may think it's still towing a trailer and strongly accelerate the engine when going uphill with the cruise control on. this is only based on what i have experience, and include no computer log examination. not the best thing to happen if a police car is around, and being a safe driver. i'm not too concerned about this issue, as i self manage the issue. (tend to self manage a lot of things these days.) this vehicle has served me quite well, except for a loud knock on the front drive axle on this awd - likely a bad bearing that they didn't fix when they fixed it initially. shrugs. *tr
Our 2005 ford escape has a surging problem.when stopped at a light, every once in a while the engine will suddenly speed up.to keep it from moving forward you have to press hard on the brake pedal.a ford dealership wanted $85.00 to diagnose the problem.this is unacceptable for a safety problem. *tr

After luckily just exiting interstate 70, but entering highway 40 my vehicle completely died with all electrical functions inoperative (obviously including power brakes, steering, etc). this occurred on an upgrade with a city bus directly behind me which was forced to swerve into the adjacent lane. auto would not restart and it was towed to a neighboring ford dealership. there was absolutely no warning of a check engine light etc. at the dealership i was informed that an "electrical engine module" had burned out which also completely fried all the engine coils. (a complete electrical tune-up,etc. had been performed about a year earlier). i was also informed that the diagnosis was possible because of a ford internal memo indicating what could happen if the module malfunctioned. the good news is that i had just exited an interstate, but this could have been disastrous and it seems that ford was aware of the possibility of this problem. the cost now to fix the problem is $2600 and i have no assurance that this couldn't happen again with more severe squealed. *tr
This is being resubmitted, since i believe the reevaluation of the 09 and newer ford escapes is the same problem that has been occurring with the earlier year ford escapes, but has not received review. a defective pcm which causes complete auto shutdown, burning out the coils, etc. has documented complaints all over the internet in car complaint and buying sites for this vehicle. the pcm is defective on the escape and when it stops functioning all power is lost, and this occurs without warning leaving one without brakes, power steering, etc. this has been a known problem with ford and yet ford refuses to correct the problem and the bill is in the neighborhood of $2500-3000 to be shouldered by the customer. malfunction, however, has more ominous sequelae than monetary cost, in that it may cost lives from crashes. ford should recall these vehicles to repair the causation, but obviously ford needs pressure from the public and in particular the nhtsa ! *tr

My car's gas pedal felt like it became stuck, almost feeling like the car was in neutral even though it was in drive. i was on a hill. then suddenly it sped off fast with a jolt. our mechanic said it needs a new throttle. after doing research on my car's make & model, it appears that this has been an ongoing concern. it's very dangerous. *tr
After totaling a 2004 escape, i purchased another 2005 escape because i loved it. well not so much anymore. i bought the vehicle from a dealership in september 2012. only three short months later i started having the exact same problem i am reading in all complaints. i tried to push on the gas and nothing. it was misfiring bad. i then took it too a shop and they told me coils 1, 3, and 5 were out and needed to be replaced. the dealership wanted close too $2,000 to repair it. i was furious because i had bought my 2004 from the same dealership and my family alone had purchased a total of 6 vehicles from the dealership. i was a loyal customer and was not going to pay to have it fixed. so they split the cost of $1000 with me. now it is acting up again and i've replaced the fuel filter and the thermostat bc that's what the computer said only for it to still not be running. i am a single mother, college student, and server and it's 2 days before christmas so i am very disappointed! fix the problem ford!! *tr

I was driving to work on us 41 south when my 2005 ford escape just started to buck and would not accelerate, i was going approximately 45 mph and the car just shut off. i could not steer or start it again and was almost hit by an 18 wheel vehicle and killed. i immediately put my flashers on and kept retrying to start the car to get it off the road. this could have killed me and others this morning! this is a ford motor company mechanical issue and they knew about this problem with this model vehicle and choose to not recall it!! how many people have died from this problem that we are not aware of??? i took the car and had it checked out and they said that ford issued a bulletin on this exact issue and how to fix it! only now, its going to cost me, the consumer $2000 or more to fix!! i am so upset from it, i am almost paid off on this vehicle and i feel that this issue should be looked into by the attorney general and by the transportation department of safety! *tr

On way home, car shut off while going 35 mph. coils started to smoke. towed to nearest dealer and was told all coils, plugs and powertrain module needs to be replaced at $2500. researched legitimate websites and found many owners with same problem that had fixed more than once at $2500. was told by dealer that nhtsa only recalls for safety & emissions. this is clearly a safety issue, especially if going a high speed on interstate and car shuts off without warning. thankfully my kids were not in car. *tr

Engine computer ceased to function and the car completely died. pcm required repair. known issue, ford needs to remedy this!!
I was driving home from work and the car stalls out of nowhere. then the check engine, oil, and abs warning lights all lit up. after about 20 min i tried starting up the car again and it started up and slowly made it home. the following day it happen again! luckily no one was behind me, otherwise i would have been rear ended. immediately looked online describing the issue to see if i could find out what could be causing this, and come to find out an overwhelming amount of people have experienced the same thing! this is a safety hazard and had i been on a major highway the result could have drastically different. it is appalling that this has been a know issue and ford has done nothing to remedy the safety of it's customers. *tr
My daughter was driving our 2005 ford escape on the highway at 55 mph when it completely cut off on her. luckily she was able to get to the side of the highway without incident. she got the car back on and made it home, however, it was jerking and misfiring all the way home. we took it to a mechanic who said it needed spark plugs and 2 coils to the tune of $700.00. when we went to pick it up we were told that the computer was shot and that we had to take it to the ford dealership. the ford place is replacing all 6 coils and the computer for $2300.00. apparently there is a known problem with ford installing the wrong spark plugs in these models at the factory causing the coils and the computer to go out. i don't understand why ford has not recalled this problem. going down a highway at 55 mph and you car cuts off is a safety issue in my eyes!! *tr
