Recently reported STEERING problems on 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape hybrid. the contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed, the power steering failed causing the steering wheel to seize. the vehicle was previously taken to the dealer where the techniciansmade unknown repairs to the vehicle. the problem did not recur until recently. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 62,000.

Car steering just stopped working and car became almost impossible to steer. almost had accident. took it to ford dealer ship and they will charge over $900.00 to repair and take 2 days. steering column must be replaced according to ford dealer. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape hybrid. while driving approximately 30 mph, the steering wheel seized. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering column needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 115,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape hybrid. the contact stated the vehicle stalled intermittently. the contact mentioned that a knocking noise emitted from the steering column as the power steering seized. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician stated that the contact's vehicle was affected by recall nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the vehicle was repaired. however, the second day after the software was reprogrammed the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer who diagnosed that the entire steering column needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 117,540.

In august 2014 with 99k miles vehicle was taken to dealership for regular scheduled maintenance. the vehicle had not experienced any steering problems however, during maintenance dealership installed software updates to pscm and ic modules per nhtsa recall 14-v284000. within a few months the vehicle began intermittently losing the power steering during lower speed turning, the exact thing the recall was supposed to fix. in august 2015 at the next regular service appt i informed dealership of the problem and copies of on-line research that showed it as an ongoing problem related to the recall. i was told that they had done the recall "fixes" and could not specifically identify the problem but if i wanted the steering column replaced they would do it, for several thousand dollars, of which i declined. i have had many close calls when without warning the steering becomes almost locked up but have been able to so far muscle it around the turns.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. the contact stated while driving approximately 30 mph, the steering wheel seized without warning and excessive force was required. the vehicle was merged to side of the road where it was turned off and restarted. the vehicle resumed normal function but the failure recurred multiple times. the contact received a notification for recall nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician informed the contact that they would only update the software and could not replace the pscm. the failure recurred multiple times. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer for a diagnosis and they stated that the pscm needed to be replaced. however, the part could not be replaced under the recall. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not offer further assistance. the approximate failure mileage was 65,000.

Immediately after ford dealer performed steering recall, the vehicle has no power assist at low speed tight turns( i.e. parking lot, u turns). i've returned it to another ford dealer with no resolution to the problem.

I had my 2008 ford escape hybrid serviced at koons ford after receiving safety recall 14s05 from ford motor company. the recall is to repair a potential safety issue related to the electric power steering system. after receiving the repair to correct the issue in safety recall notice 14so5, my vehicle developed steering / suspension problems. at highway speeds the steering on the ford escape is now very sensitive causing the vehicle to feel unsteady at times. (if feels like it is swaying slightly from side to side.) we first noticed the issue within a week of having the repair done. as we caravanned to our summer vacation, my wife was driving behind me on the highway. at a rest stop she asked if i was tired and having trouble driving. she informed that from her vantage point it looked like the car was swerving. i was well rested and shared with her that it also felt as though the steering / suspension was loose. we have also noticed, at low speeds, that the steering wheel has more play to it now. *tr

While driving in a residential street at 30 miles per hour the steering wheel locked up for about three seconds during a deceleration period approaching a stop sign. this occurred while trying to move the vehicle slightly to the left in the center of the lane correction. *tr

My vehicle is part of the ford recall for the power steering control module. ford is refusing to cover it, even though our vin is reported on ford's recall website as part of the recall. *tr

This was already registered on this website, although no one has contacted me. i have also been in contact with sarah mcshane. this is in reference to recall 14v-284/14s05, where ford escape and mariners lose their power steeting. our vehicle actually lost its ps a couple of weeks before the recall. we took the vehicle to washington (pa) ford. they had to replace our ignition to get the recall code. once they did that, they completed step 1 of the recall to reprogram the power steering module. at that point, washington ford closed out the recall, saying that it was fixed. this was before i was able to test the vehicle. as soon as i drove off of the lot, the ps continued to turn off and on. to this day (4 months later), the ps continues to turn off and on at random, accompanied by a loud click from the steering column. woltz and wind ford let us know that they contacted ford corporate, and they were told that no work could be done on the recall, since it was closed. this seems like an error, and we need to have our recall opened back up. please contact me asap to help me from wrecking. numerous times, i have been going 60 or 70 mph on the highway when this has happened, resulting in near death. this cannot be safe or a responsibility of me, the owner. *tr

The power steering locked up on me as i was driving making it impossible to drive the car. i was able to pull over and stop the car because i happen to be driving very slowly at the time and shut off the car and then restarted it. after i restarted it the steering worked fine. i looked online to see why that would happen and i found 302 other people complaining of the same problem http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2008/ford/escape/steering. the complaints say that this will happen more and more frequently and can happen when driving on the highway. ford is not doing a recall apparently even though this lack of steering happens with no warning as people are driving at high rates of speed. this is very dangerous! *js

Driving up a slight hill through a gradual s curve with a sudden loss of the power steering. at the top of the hill the power returned. i am filing this because i noticed that there are quite a few reports of incidents similar to this with the 2008 escape. it could be very dangerous. *tr

Power assisted steering locked upon starting the car, this has happened every time i start my car and i have to restart my car 6+ times to get my steering to unlock. the steering wheel shakes at stoplights and is favoring the left when driving straight. when the steering is locked it is near impossible to turn the car. i have to worry every day that the car might lock up on the freeway when i am driving to work. i have seen hundreds of other reports like this on the internet yet no recall... *tr

I stopped at a stop sign and attempted to turn left up a hill. the steering locked and for a second or two i couldn't turn and was afraid i would crash into the hillside. after braking the steering column unlocked. i took it to the dealer and they were unable to duplicate the problem so they recommend replacing the whole column at my expense. *tr

Car goes limp. ford has tsb 08-24-05. mecp fails. poor design. has gone limp on me ~8 times. each time car drifts to a stop regardless of location, speed, etc...(eg, can be going 75mph on highway) and it goes limp. cannot move afterwards for minutes. many cases of this happening have been reported. tsb 08-24-5 states that some 2005-2008 escape hybrid and 2006-2008 mariner hybrid vehicles may exhibit a red triangle light and codes indicating a transaxle overtemp. this condition may result in reduced power as the system activates fail safe operation. codes p1a0e, p1a0f, p0a3c, p0a3e, p0a7a, p0a7c and p1a0d may also be set. *tr

Lost power steering totally on my ford escape. no warning lites were displayed. have had the steering stop a few times before and stopped vehicle and restarted and no problems. per ford when i asked in past it was something to do with the sensor located in steering column but nothing showed up in the computer. i have emailed ford and received a response that there is no recall or financial assistance to repair problem. they recommend i save the receipt of about $1700.00. in case they do a recall later. *tr

I was making a corner at approximately 40 mph when my power steering gave out. if i had not been a wrestling coach, i would have had an accident. if my wife had been driving, there would have been an accident. i immediately got myself to the dealership, where they had to replace the entire steering column because of a broken part. i have had two friends where this has happened. i just recently received a recall notice 14s05/nhtsa recall 14v-284. i went to the dealership and found out the recall which affects the steering mechanism is a computer program that produces the same effect and not a structural problem of the steering column. i am having the repair done today, but i am concerned that there may be other dangerous structural problems out there with the steering column. my experience has not been unique. *tr

Steering wheel developed excess play and now pulses and vibrates with minimal pressure on the steering wheel. steering has not yet failed but taking car into the dealership tomorrow. after reading about similar problems with ford's electronic power assist steering i'm now afraid to drive the vehicle. other problems seem to be reported at similar mileage to our vehicle's. *tr

While driving the car i came to a stop sign and the steering wheel started to vibrate and jerk when the car was stopped. this continued for the drive to work, at each stop the steering wheel was moving. when leaving work, after starting the car, found that there was no power steering. turned off the car and re-started it, the power steering came back. since that time the problem has become more frequent. sometimes i have to restart the car a few times before the steering activates. we just dropped it off at a dealership for inspection, our local garage could get no help from ford on what was required for the repair or what the computer codes meant, other than they were related to the steering column. so now we are being told by ford that the repair can range from $600 to $1,500.00 to fix the problem, but they are not sure what it is, and that they do not believe what was reported on the internet is the cause. if all of the symptoms match the others listed how can the problem be something else? *tr

Several times since buying my car in nov 2013 my steering wheel has locked up on me so that it is extremely difficult to turn the wheel, typically when turning a corner, almost causing accidents. i have been very lucky that there were no other vehicles around since i was unable to pull completely over in one case and i was unable to complete the turn in my own lane in another. i am very worried that this will happen in traffic and myself and others could be injured or even killed. and neither ford or warranty company is willing to repair/replace. *tr

The first time this occurred was approximately 5 months ago (est. 132k miles) while driving in city traffic, i swerved and brake quickly to avoid a road hazard (large pothole) estimated speed was under 20 mph. the power steering failed and the vehicle continued to run in electric (hybrid) mode and was able to muscle it off to the side of the road. restarting the engine resolved the issue and the car has been fine until two weeks ago. the second time was in late november, mileage 135k, was slowly turning into a traffic circle at approx. 10 mph, without warning power steering failed the same as the previous time. i was able to stop and restart the car which restored the power steering. after the second experience i did some research online and am seeing that this is a known issue and has been reported to your agency (three different web sites with multiple complaints). i find it hard to believe that a recall has not required - someone will get hurt if this happens at highway speed to an inexperienced driver. i have worked as a professional mechanic and have a decent comprehension of vehicle systems (1974 - 1995), my comments are based on years of experience. i have not verified this, but one of the web posts states that toyota experienced the same issue and did a recall. http://www.escape-city.com/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=21918&p=316290&hilit=steering+failure#p316290 http://www.greenhybrid.com/discuss/f26/loss-power-left-turn-29211/ http://www.hybridcars.com/forums/showthread.php?100317-power-steering-failure/page5 i will appreciate your attention to this so that ford will take steps to rectify this dangerous condition. i have not had any other safety concerns with this vehicle since we purchased it new in 2008. i plan to report this to my senator, and state officials. please advise the best way to move forward. *tr

After backing out of my garage, i put my vehicle in drive and went to turn the wheel to point it to drive down the alleyway and suddenly realized i could not turn the front wheels. i almost hit the tree beside the garage and had to take my foot off the gas and hit the brakes hard. i tried again and again to turn the wheels and could not figure out what had happened as it was fine when i drove it and parked in the garage the day before. i turned the vehicle off and restarted and found i could barely steer so had to backup and then go forward a couple inches at a time until after about 30 times back and forth could line up enough to pull straight into the garage. the vehicle is still waiting to be towed to the ford dealer for repair. i had been starting on my way to the airport to pick up my daughter, son-in-law and three year old granddaughter so thank heavens the power steering did not go out when i was on the freeway going to or from the airport because we could have lost control and been killed.

For the past two or three weeks i have noticed a progressively worse shaking and vibrating in the steering column, especially when the vehicle was coming to a stop or resting. on the 27th of march, 2013 i started the vehicle and the steering was really difficult, as in the power assist wasn't helping. the brakes were still working fine. when i shut the vehilce off and restarted it, the steering was being assisted by the eps again. this was the first time it happened, but researching the problem it seems like it will get progressively worse. *tr

I was driving on the freeway at approximately 60 mph when all of a sudden my steering wheel tightened up where it made it very difficult to maneuver. fortunately, it wasn't a busy day and i was able to get off to the side of the road. i'm confused why ford has not issued any recall on this issues before someone gets killed. i understand my vehicle has a lot of miles, but 85 percent of my miles are freeway miles. my resolution was to spend $2,000.00 out of pocket and have the issue repaired. *tr

While coming to a stop i felt the steering wheel get tight and i noticed that the vehicle had lost it's power steering. i then noticed the wrench light had illuminated. this is a very dangerous defect if this were to happen going around a curve or making a turn if could cause an accident. *tr

I was driving along and loss all power steering it was very hard to turn around a corner and if i was going any faster i probably would have not made it. i have been reading online that this is not a random occurrence several escape owners have had loss of steering. *tr

This has happened multiple times.... while driving slow (5-10 mph) and turning, power steering goes out making it extremely difficult to turn the wheel. this has resulted in near head-on collisions more than once when the turning radius could not be maintained and i drifted over into oncoming traffic. this is a major safety concern that many others with these electric power steering escape hybrids have had. i will not let my wife drive the vehicle now until we have saved enough to fix the problem (quoted $1,400.00). *tr

Steering wheel has been shaking when car is stopped and at low speeds. power steering does not work at times when car is started, i turn it off and restart the car and it works. while coming to a stop at around 35 mph the power steering failed, shut off the car and turn it back on and it still did not work. steering wheel shakes left and right and makes a bad noise while in park and at low speeds. have not taken car to be serviced yet. *tr

Power steering quits working while driving. can happen at low speeds or normal driving speed. malfunction was intermittent. power steering would start working properly after shutting engine off and restarting engine. problem has become more frequent and getting power steering to come back in operation after restarting has become less frequent. steering this vehicle is very hard without power steering, making it very un-safe to drive. *tr

The auto had just had the pump that cools the hybrid engine replaced at a cost of $590 when we noticed that there was a jerking in the steering wheel when stopped. the wheel would jerk to the right and left and make a "clucking" noise. once the car was moving the jerking seemed to stop. but then we found that when we started the car there might be no power steering or power forward. the car would have to be forcibly steered to the side and the engine turned off. starting the engine again, the car had power steering and engine power. this began to happen nearly every time the car was started, and the jerking of the wheel every time the car was stopped at a traffic signal or stop. while the problem has yet to cause a dangerous situation the potential is certainly there should the same circumstances occur while driving. having reviewed the web sites for problems with the 2008 escape there are literally dozens of similar complaints. one site lists nearly one hundred complaints exactly like mine and in some there have been accidents and potential injury. ford is stonewalling everyone on this even when the mileage is less than 50, 000 miles. often they say they know nothing of the problem and refuse to offer assistance in meeting charges that range upward to $1700. given the information that i now have i consider this to be very dangerous and am hesitant to drive the car. the lack of concern by ford seems to me to be a serious matter and one that should concern nhtsa. *tr

12/26/2012 i was making a u-turn and my steering wheel locked up. almost hit the light post, another car, almost ran up on the curb and almost hit a rock/boulder sign. problem went away once i restarted car. car sat in mechanic shop for weeks, due to back order, and was finally fixed. a new steering column cost me $1064.35 - i also have the original part. 10/26/13 i was driving on freeway, at midnight, and was two hours away from my house. my car kept slipping and the steering wheel was loose. i almost hit the freeway median multiple times, almost hit multiple cars, and almost spun out while on my drive home that night. i did not have a tow truck come because state farms computers were down and i'd have to pay $69 a mile if a tow came- and i was still two hours away from home. i took my car to my mechanic the next day and was told, again, that i am lucky to be alive. my u-join was completely broken and was told that this is also related for the steering column. i paid another $287.06 and had a new u-joint placed. i contacted ford about this steering problem, when my column had to be replaced, and they told me that they have no documented reports of an issue and that there is no recall. the internet states otherwise, and i read thousands of accounts of people getting into accidents due to their steering wheel locking up. *tr

I experienced the "sudden loss of power steering". took car into service and they argued with me but finally found and repaired the issue. this was about 2 years ago. i think i was charged for the repair. can i get my money back from the service dept since the was identified as a defect?

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape hybrid. while driving approximately 40 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver and the power steering assist deactivated. the contact depressed the brake pedal and was able to stop the vehicle. the contact then shut the engine off and after a several minutes, was able to restart the vehicle and regain power steering assist capabilities. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the technician stated that the steering column would have to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 72,000.

Does someone have to die before ford recalls these cars to fix the hybrid cooling system in these vehicles. i have fixed the problem once myself (two years ago) and now it is happening again. these cars shut down on the highway with out warning because of something going on with the hybrid system. this time my wife was in the passing lane when it happened. one day someone is going to die from this problem because it only happens when you are traveling at higher speeds (on a highway) the red triangle light comes on and automatically shuts down the car. some family will be killed because of this and ford will be caught knowing about the problem and doing nothing to fix it. *tr

Stopped at intersection waiting to turn left. turned the wheel left to make the turn while applying the accelerator. the power steering support went out, making it almost impossible to turn the vehicle. the wheel was partially turned and would essentially not turn any further. at the same time it felt like the brakes were not as effective either. after approximately two seconds, power was restored to the steering and i was able to recover and complete the turn. this has happened three times, all in left turns from a stop while attempting to begin the turn. after the third time i took the vehicle to the dealer. the ford dealer replaced components of the steering column in an attempt to fix this, and so far it has not returned.

Vehicle gave "stop safely now" readout on display and red triangle light on dash. power dropped off and i had to pull of the road. i was traveling from la to santa cruz in the evening. happened four more times on the same drive. just happened again coming back from palm springs also in the evening. took me seven hours to drive 140 miles. car stopped over twenty times. *tr

I started the vehicle to leave my office at the end of the day and noticed a tugging sensation at the steering wheel. on the freeway, it seemed fine, but when i slowed to a stop i could feel it again. the next day, the power steering completely failed. it was like driving a tank. there were no warning lights on the dash display. my ford dealer replaced the electronic steering column at a cost of $1,374.40. the vehicle was no longer under warranty due to the mileage, but is only 4 years old. *kb

While driving normally at 40 mph on a straight good road the steering wheel began kicking right to left abruptly. almost like a big right left vibration. this lasted for several minutes before the power steering completely failed and made the steering difficult to control. i pulled to the side of road. turned off the car and restart and took it immediately to the ford dealer. dealer said the electric power steering units were back order 5 - 8 weeks because many failures. this is a safety issue and people could die with the power steering failures. please recall them before somebody's dies. *tr

I was driving and gave a friend a ride. i waited in the car with the car still on while she got her things. when she hopped on i accelerated and when i tried to make a turn the steering wheel was so hard. i couldn't turn it. i pulled over and turned it off. when i started the car, it was back to normal another day i went to the drive through. same thing happened. i tried to turn after and couldn't. i had to turn he car off and then back on. i went to the dealer. they said that on their bulletin there is a msg that the steering wheel column must be replaced. they said it would be about 1300.00 for me to replace. i do not understand why i would have to pay. there are other blogs with the same problem. *tr

Problems with power steering motor suddenly shutting down on the hybrid vehicle. the problem occurs at vehicle turned on up to moderate vehicle speeds. when the problem first occurred, it confused the driver, as the power steering would experience sudden loss during when the vehicle is in electric mode (0-30mph). the sudden loss of power steering puts the driver is at risk of losing control of the vehicle, and accident. complaints to the mechanic about the steering problem are difficult. with the motor off in electric mode, and sudden loss of power steering, the driver is led to believe that motor is at fault, and will complain to the mechanic in such way. picture the vehicle completely shut down with no power steering. your led to believe that vehicle motor is malfunctioning. this is not the case with the hybrid, as the vehicle is not actually shut down, it's in electric mode. no indicators are present within vehicle computer system to indicate that the problem is with power steering. service department indicates that there is an electronic power steering motor problem, causing a binding issue with the column. two service departments report that this is a unique issue. several forums online are indicating that this issue is not unique, and rather common. service department andy gates (ford, victorville, ca) reports that the vehicle is not safe to drive in it's current state. the report from service department victorville, ca indicates that the steering column was designed with safety flaws, and ford is having difficulty diagnosing the problem early on. *tr

The abs light and the brake light came on when i turned on the car. the brakes felt different. *tr

When i was driving on several occasions, the steering wheel would lock up and scare the heck out of me. just today, while driving in town, i was turning left in the home depot and the steering locked up. having experienced this several times before, i knew to grab the wheel tightly and continue my turn. my real problem is that i am now giving this car to my (daughter) new driver as her daily car. i am very concerned. i just read several blogs on several sites and all of them state that the dealers don't know and can't duplicate the problem. i have around 70,000 miles now on it, and no longer have a warranty. besides a very tight budget, i am concerned for my daughter. please advise. also, please don't tell me you haven't heard of this problem either... *tr

While driving at about 50 miles per hour on a two lane undivided highway, i tried to turn the steering wheel to the right to follow a curve but the steering wheel would not turn. the steering wheel felt locked, as i was drifting over the center line into the oncoming traffic lane, i quickly hit the brake to slow the car, and proper steering resumed. even the short term loss of steering can and will result in an accident, injury, or death. a safety recall needs to be considered on these vehicles with electric power steering.

I have a 2008 ford escape hybrid. while driving downhill and while braking, power steering seemed to fail completely for 3-5 seconds. steering did not lock completely, it seemed, but it took real strength to move it as i was going around a gentle curve. i'm not sure my wife could have done same. potentially very dangerous. car is with dealership now. *tr

I have a 2008 ford escape hybrid. while turning i have lost steering, the steering wheel becomes difficult to turn and the vehicle did not turn, it lasts approx 5 seconds and then works again, this has happened two times in 4 days and once almost causing me to crash into another vehicle. i took escape to ford dealership where i was told they could not do anything because they can not find the problem. they said they tried to recreate it and were unable to do so (they only drove my escape 2 miles the entire 2 days they had it). i have noticed, always while driving straight, that sometimes when the engine switches from gas to electric there is sometimes a sudden difference in steering wheel tension, almost like the power steering turns off for a few seconds. *tr

While slowing down to make a turn onto another street, the steering wheel 'locked' and would not turn. i jammed on the brakes to stop before hitting the vehicle that was waiting to pull out. i pulled hard on the steering wheel and it finally moved. after that, it went back to normal operation. this is a very dangerous situation. it has not done it since, but makes me nervous when driving it. i have not contacted the ford dealer yet. *tr

While return home on i70 freeway going downhill at approx. 70mph the electrical assisted power steering quit working. the vehicle was very hard, but not impossible, to steer going around a curve. this only lasted a few seconds then it started working again... *tr

Lost complete steering control twice while driving. *tr

Steering wheel locked at 12,000 miles and a third time at 35,000 (once in between) for a total of three times. tire wear very odd, touchy braking. *tr
