I have owned my 05 durango since 07. my durango has stalled now 4 times in 6 months. once in a hospital parking lot going very slow. next time while backing out of my driveway. about a month ago i turned into my neighborhood and made a slow left turn onto my street. it lost power halfway into the turn. no rpm's no speedo. no power steering no power brakes. i man handled the turn, flipped it in neutral. turned the key off then on and i had my speedo back, and i continued to start it back up. i thought ok that was crazy weird. no check engine lights, no codes. i thought it was bad gas or fuel system clogged. i have since cleaned all they up and serviced the fuel system. then yesterday it happened again in the same exact location doing the same exact low speed maneuver. this time i had my kids in the truck. what if i pulled across traffic to turn with no power and stalls. what if my wife was driving? i'm not sure she could remedy a situation like this. *tr
I was on my home from work going about 40mph. i got to a redlight before i stopped the suv jerked. and when i press the gas peddle to go , the suv would not move. i then tried to put it in another gear it was on but it still would not move. the police officer that pushed it out of the street said that it was the transmission. also you can just be driving the suv would just stop. this is very dangerous, and can cause accidents. on one occasion i had to nearly run off of the road to keep from having and accident. i think that chrysler llc should replace my 2005 dodge durango. being that i'm a single grandparent and now i have no transportation. so i can't get to work to provide for my granddaughter. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the engine stalled without warning. the vehicle was restarted and resumed normally. the failure recurred five times. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis however, a trouble code was not detected and the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 142,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while driving at any speed, the vehicle stalled and shut down without warning. the vehicle was able to be restarted. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was driven to a mechanic. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000.
On any number of occasions (regardless of outside temperature or whether or not the vehicle was at normal operating temperature) while the vehicle is at a slow speed (in forward or reverse) the engine will stall without warning. with the loss of engine power comes the normal loss of power steering and power brakes. it appears to be most frequent when pulling into or out of a parking lot, stop sign, etc. the slow speeds are not inherently dangerous, except for the fact that stalling while in traffic and suddenly reducing speed or stopping puts myself and other motorist in jeopardy. when backing into a parking space, the loss of steering and braking capabilities create a risk of minor damage to other parked cars and could put a pedestrian at risk while being distracted and not being able to stop or steer as easily. there are no obvious sounds or engine or transmission noises or vibrations or anything to give warning that this could occur. *tr
I just returned from a trip from p.a to buffalo n.y. i parked it overnight woke up the next morning to a loud rattle sound coming from the engine. had it towed to my local dodge dealership and they told me that a engine rod broke and blew a hole in the engine block, the suv had around 140,00 on it ,i replaced the engine brand new at the cost of around 6,500.00..dodge durango slt 5.7 hemi.
Between the end of november 2013 and the middle of december 2013, i was driving on the highway and had to slow down as i approached the toll booth. as i slowed down to approximately 35 mph, the engine shut down and the steering wheel locked. i had no control of the vehicle. i put the gear shift into neutral as i rolled along and turned on the ignition to restart the engine. this was the second time this incident occurred within 2-3 weeks. *js
Engine stall without warning. lost control of the steering and brake very hard to apply. *tr
Has occurred multiple times. initially my 05 durango would stall when pulling into parking spaces. has progressed to normal driving conditions at around 35 mph while turning the engine will shut off. occasionally the rpms will jump up and down too. engine idles around 500rpm. when this first occurred there were no warning lights illuminated. i just don't feel like this is a safe vehicle at this point in time and based off of the other reports, dodge should investigate and repair at no cost. *tr
While cruising a back road near home the durango suddenly shut off leaving me no lower steering or brakes. it was terrifying. i was lucky to be only going approximately 25 mph as i was just cresting a hill. i was able to have enough momentum to guide the truck onto a side street. it restarted immediately upon putting it in park again. and i was able to drive it to my parents house without incident and then again back to my house later in the day. there was no warning lights that lit on the dash and no other indication that there was a. malfunction. the rpms were smooth, no rough engine. terrified to drive this truck now. *tr
During november 2013, i drove my vehicle approximately 3 miles from my house to my friends house. i slowed down to approximately 10 miles per hour as i approached my friend's house and the engine shut down with the gear shift in drive. the steering wheel locked. i had no control of the vehicle. i put the gear shift in neutral and turned on the ignition to get the engine started again. *js
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated while driving approximately 10 mph, the engine stalled without warning. the vehicle resumed normally when restarted but the failure recurred five times. on a separate occasion, the transmission shifted into fwd independently while traveling between 35-40 mph. the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the failure mileage was 110,000. the vin was unavailable.
2005 dodge durango 5.7 hemi stalls upon acceleration. during acceleration in the forward direction the vehicle will lose all electrical function and shut down the engine causing the motorist to be stranded in the middle of an intersection or other dangerous section of roadway. loss of electrical function can be attributed to the close proximity of the positive battery cable to the egr pipe on the right side of the engine. during acceleration the engine will torque over causing the egr pipe to make contact with the battery cable thus causing the plastic sheathing to become chafed. over time this chafing will wear through the plastic sheathing and expose the bare copper wire allowing it to come in contact with the metal egr pipe. the contact of the copper wire from the positive battery cable to the metal egr pipe creates a direct short which in turn shuts down the electrical system and any engine control functions. in some instances this short can cause the battery cable to heat up enough to catch the plastic insulation on fire and possibly lead to battery explosion.
Engine stalls with no warning, affecting braking and steering while moving, has happened in heavy traffic, is intermittent and is a huge safety concern.
The vehicles dash board lights will all light up, at one point i would have the gas floored and it would feel like i'm towing a house it started getting worse to the point the car would stall while driving so i would put it in neutral and it would start back up when the lights aren't on it runs fine but once the light come on the dash board it acts up and all the lights come on temperature, check engine, air bag, 4x4, oil light ,battery light ,etc dodge flashed my computer it worked for a week and then started again i have had many mechanics look at it along with dodge and no one can figure out the problem , recently starting 5/27/15 the problems have proceeded to get extremely dangerous now once all the lights light up it stalls and may not restart several times i've been stuck on the highway waiting an hour or two to restart it and now it only gets me a few feet then stalls plus its now doing it with no lights on the dash ,rpms ,mph etc , and when it drives sometimes there is nothing on dash but when i hit brakes all the gauges will shoot up temperature and fuel even if its not a full rank it will say it then when i step on gas the dash board goes out, i have contacted corporate dodge to resolve this issue telling them i've seen several numerous complaints the same as mine but yet no recall so they now want me once again to take it to dodge, june 9th 2015 , but today june 3rd 2015 , i stalled in the street on rt 9 and it would not start at all to the point i had to call a tow truck then once the tow truck dropped it at my house it started but all the lights were lit up on dash ,if i was able to post pictures and videos on here i would because i video the dash every time it does it and i plan to show dodge the videos on the 9th , dodge needs to resolve this issue. *tr
The vehicle has been stalling without warning on common basis. no engine lights illuminated. *tr
Started durango and let it warm up at idle for 3 mins. started to hear a squeak then a slight tapping and now sounds like loose metal in the engine. oil changed every 3-4k miles. had oil changed today and now worse. *tr
Every time it rains the car rides rough. it's scary. we own 2 of these and found out that this isn't being addressed by dodge. totally disappointed in lack of consideration by the dodge corp. *jb
Vehicle stalls at low speeds and deceleration, idling hard at a stop and while in park, will stall when idling hard, gas spills out of inlet when filling up completely, sluggish in temperatures below 30 degrees and above 80 degrees, requires more than normal maintenance, service tech's can never diagnose the causes of stalling or idling issues, think it might concern the throttle body, transmission has torqued itself out before, stripped screws, rebuilt at 90000 miles. just waiting for it to go again. this vehicle has been nothing but issues ever since i bought it used. every fix just feels like a band aid to the manufacturing problems it has. *tr
The vehicle stalls while making turning maneuvers at low speeds which disables the power steering and brakes. this has occurred on numerous occasions but the dealer is unable to duplicate the problem and has not been able to correct this issue. this has always occur during decelerations, such as braking for a stop sign or traffic signal. when it happen i must immediately put the vehicle in park and restart it, but luckily this has not let to an accident yet. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango sl. while driving approximately 45 mph, the engine stalled without any prior warnings. the vehicle restarted and resumed normally. the vehicle was inspected by a certified mechanic who test drove the vehicle and noticed the front passenger side air bag warning indicator illuminated intermittently. the mechanic was unable to duplicate the problem nor determine the cause of failure. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 157,968.
The car begins to sputter and stall at constant speeds, then stalls while running which disables the power steering and brakes. this situation is profoundly dangerous as it renders the car nearly unable to stop. the only way you can stop is if you can get the car into neutral, coast off the road and quickly restart the engine. the engine light does come on during. i have gotten this issue repaired four times and it continues to occur and the sensors that correspond to the code have been replaced twice each and are in full working order. dodge is aware of the issue but will not do anything. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis where he was informed that a mat sensor would need to be replaced. the dealer also advised that the failure was probably caused by many other variables. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 165,000.
I'm contacting you in regards to my 2005 dodge durango. i have encountered it stalling making turns, driving down the street and at lights. i have researched the issue after having a tune up on the vehicle with no success. after researching, i have found that thousands of people are having the same exact issue. i have printed off from several sites the complaints identical to mine. this is definitely a recall for this vehicle and should be replaced by chrysler/dodge. i have found that a lot of people are finding that the issue is the egr system. the same thing with the air bag issue that i'm receiving, i'll be driving down the road and get an alert that the passenger air bag was turned off when someone is in the seat. there is two recalls in place now for air bag issues. i really hope that you will investigate this and reach out to chrysler to get this resolved for consumers. *tr
Started car in the morning and it started to make engine noise. took it to dealer. they said the rod bearing is bad. have to replace engine. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while driving 25 mph and completing a right turn, the vehicle stalled without warning. the failure recurred numerous times and always when the contact was attempting a turn. the vehicle was taken to a dealer however, the failure was not diagnosed and the contact was advised that there were no recalls for the failure. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 93,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was restarted after several minutes and was taken to an independent mechanic, who advised the contact that they were unable to generate a failure code. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was approximately 140,000. the current mileage was approximately 146,000. *tr
While driving on interstate from work, oil light come on. i immediately pulled over and checked the oil. the level on the dipstick was in the safe zone. i then had it towed to my mechanic that told meth the motor would need to be replaced. i never had any other problems with the durango until then. oil was always changed at 3,000 miles. the mechanic told me that there is sludge build up because of the design/angle of the ports that doesn't allow the oil to move freely. apparently is this an ongoing problem and this should be a recall for this, no one has the money to put almost $4,000 inanother engine. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that she reversed out of the driveway at 5 mph and as she shifted into drive, the vehicle stalled. the vehicle restarted and functioned as normal. neither the dealer nor the manufacturer were notified. the failure mileage was 100,000.
I have a 2005 durango and lately it has been dying with no type of any warning. it usually will happen if i am turning a corner, coming to a stop and then trying to accelerate, or going through parking lots. saturday i had a car full of kids leaving a baseball game and i stopped at a stop sign to cross a busy hwy in my hometown and when i went to accelerate to go across the intersection of the hwy my durango died right there with oncoming traffic headed toward us...i couldn't steer and had to stop in the middle of the hwy with the kids in my car and put the car in park and frantically try to start the car hoping this would help (which thankfully it did this time). this has happened more than once and each time is getting more and more scarier. i am afraid to drive the car for fear one of these times my family and i won't be so lucky and will end up being killed due to the defect in the vehicle. i have reviewed many forums online and see many complaints in the forums where this has been brought to dodge's attention and even complaints on this site with nothing done to resolve this issue. this is very dangerous for everyone involved because of the stalling of the vehicle. please listen to the consumers and help resolve this issue. thank you. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle stalled and the check engine warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where it was diagnosed that the cam shaft sensor and the egr valve needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the approximate failure mileage was 120,000 and the current mileage was 133,000. *tr
When i'm driving in traffic (approx 30-45 mph) or stopped at a light, my vehicle randomly shuts off. there's no indication this will happen. no lights flash or anything. the truck simply stops. i take it to mechanics and they say they can't identify the problem--but they recognize there's a problem. i'm fearful for the safety of my family in the vehicle and/or anyone we encounter when this happens. it's nearly impossible to steer the vehicle out of traffic, and the steering locks up as well. i've had the cooling system flushed, transmission replaced to no avail. is there a recall on this thing?! there sure should be! i'm sure someone has died by now due to this malfunction. *tr
First incident happened at a low speed coming into a turn. i did some research online and found that most durango owners had luck with fuel system cleaning and/or egr valve replacements. i did both, and the vehicle ran fine up until today (2 months later). there were previous "investigations" for recall services a few years back, but they were closed out. i hope dodge decides to open an investigation again.. i do not want to be paying $200 every 2 months for fuel cleaning services. this is ridiculous. *tr
I was at a stop sign and began to make a left turn when the vehicle stalled. i was able to stop the vehicle from rolling too far into the intersection as a vehicle past from left to right. this was the first time my vehicle stalled. i have had it stall multiple times since each time moving from a stopped position. each time the vehicle starts right up after the stall and i have no check engine lights or the like appear. this is very concerning to me especially when it happens when im pulling out into busy fast moving traffic. *tr
This vehicle occasionally stalls, leaving no power steering or power brakes. this was not a single incident; this has happened probably 50 times over the past 4 years. it has happened at multiple vehicle speeds, and has happened in both forward ("drive") and reverse gears. the vehicle has always immediately restarted, and it drives normally after restarting. there is no warning or indication that the engine is about to stall, and no check engine (or other) light comes on before or after the incident. the most recent incident happened after dropping my son off at his school. while driving through the school parking lot to leave, the vehicle stalled and i wasn't able to control it (very high steering effort, difficult to stop). i almost hit another vehicle. i also realized the severity of this problem because it could have been a child instead of another vehicle which i nearly struck. a quick web search produced results showing other drivers of dodge durangos have experienced the same stalling phenomenon, so i'm confident that this is a defect in the design or manufacturing of the vehicle, and not just a single case of my vehicle being bad. please look into this further, as it has the same safety implications as the ignition switch failures within gm. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled without warning while driving 25 mph. the failure only occurred when driving at lower speeds. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic several times for the failure and a diagnostic was performed that was unable to generate a failure code. the spark plugs, wires and filter were replaced however the failure was not corrected. the vehicle continued to stall when the contact was driving at lower speeds. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 120,000 and the current mileage was 128,000.
We were driving back into town from a family visit. we slowed down coming back into town and my vehicle stalled out when we started slowing down. we almost got rear ended by another vehicle. we tried to start it back up however my vehicle kept stalling out. i took it to three different places including the dealership where i had originally purchased the vehicle and they kept telling me there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. after over a thousand dollars at the dealers and several hundred more at the other two places to this day it still cuts out and stalls out when i am driving it. now because it is a hazard we do not drive it at all and it is parked in our back yard waiting for a miracle to happen...thank you for your time. sincerely very frustrated. *tr
Vehicle stalls with no check engine light, when slowing or in slow moving traffic sometimes while turning. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact mentioned the failure recurred intermittently. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer for a diagnostic. the manufacturer was not notified manufacturer of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 66,000 and the current mileage was 106,000.
I have seen lots of complaints about this same issue online as well as 2 open and closed investigations on this website! while driving my 2005 dodge durango it will shut off on its own, steering is impossible at this point. it use to happen a lot to me. normally it would always happen pulling in or backing out of my driveway. but i live in rural wv and we have mountains and curvy roads. once i was driving about 30-35 mph and i was on a curvy road and it stalled out on me and i about went over the mountain as i could not steer! we had the vehicle checked over and there was no warning our check engine light on. ultimately have the mechanic played the guessing game, he replaced the egr valve and that had fixed the problem. just recently it is beginning to happen again. this investigation needs to be reopened! manufacturer should be responsible. my durango has 3 very common issues with lots of other folks that should be recalled: 1. the stalling of the vehicle for no apparent reason. 2. the fuel leaking out as you are filling it was gas! they say my car is not part of the recall and will not pay to fix it. 3. 4 lock kicks in on its own as you are driving. this is very dangerous! they need to investigate and solve the problem and recall. i love my durango and i have had it for 6 years as i bought it used and i am the second owner. i would love for dodge to make this right. as i do not want to get another vehicle. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled without warning while driving 65 mph. the engine warning light illuminated and the vehicle had to be placed in neutral in order to restart. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the dealer replaced the spark plugs, but the failure was not corrected. the vehicle continued to stall intermittently. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer and a diagnostic test was performed, which located the failure at the cam shaft and crank sensors. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 55,000 and the current mileage was 72,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while driving at 40 mph, the vehicle stalled and the check engine and air bag warning lights illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer. the contact was unsure about the part that needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v817000 (air bags) however, the part needed to repair the vehicle was unavailable. the failure mileage was 80,000.
Vehicle purchased used in june 2010. within days of purchase, vehicle began stalling while pulling out into traffic. vehicle was returned to the dealer several times. egr valve was replaced and throttle service done, idler pulley replaced. stalling problem continued to occur on and off along with hard shifting, hesitating, lack of power issues. transmission rebuilt in jan 2012 after it "froze" backing out of the driveway. bell housing leak detected and fixed in june 2012. stalling worsened, occurring not only from start up but while traveling straight in acceleration to speeds just above 40 mph. revving in park, neutral and while stopped in traffic started in early 2013 and continues today. have had vehicle in for service on numerous occasions with no fix to the problem. torque converter clutch, water pump, fuel injector, coil, vacuum sensor, air intake sensor, knock sensor, pcv valve, plugs and wires have all been replaced or repaired but problems persist. this vehicle is a danger as it stalls without warning in heavy traffic and when pulling out into traffic and revs so high at stops that i have had to put both feet on the brake to prevent it from lurching into the vehicle in front of me. *tr
During march 2014, i was driving my 2005 dodge durango on the highway. at approximately 50 mph, the engine shut off while in drive. i had no control of the vehicle. the steering wheel locked. i put the gear shift into neutral and turned the ignition switch back on. i was able to restart the vehicle. this was the third incident. prior to this third incident, i took the vehicle to two separate dealers and they could not find the problem. they told me that they could not diagnose the problem. *js
The vehicle bucked, as if misfiring. it occurs frequently since that time. it also has a starting issue. sporadic non-response when attempting to start. *tr
I have had my car stall/die on me numerous times over the past few years. i have had the egr valve replaced, the transmission fluid and filters changed and they did not resolve the problem. while i am driving and slow down to turn or slow down to turn into a parking spot, the engine will die/stall. i have to turn the car off and then restart it. it is very dangerous. i have had to prevent a few accidents from happening. it happened one time i was turning onto another street into oncoming traffic. i am frightened for my children's safety. i have read so many of the exact same complaints by other owners and wonder why nothing has been done about this yet?? are we waiting until people die in car accidents due to the lack of concern? thank you *tr
My vehicle shuts off while driving. this has happened multiple times. i can't steer the vehicle because everything shuts off. it is very dangerous and i am very concerned. i have read many of the same complaints on the internet from people having the same problems. *tr
I have owned this vehicle for approximately four years now. it has a persistent and very unsettling problem of stalling for no apparent reason with no corresponding warning lights etc. it just dies and the power steering and brakes fail resulting in significant loss of steering and braking effectiveness. this problem has occurred intermittently with no pattern of origin evident several times over the past few years. on several occasions, it has occurred while pulling out into busy traffic lanes across intersections. i have been able to put it into neutral and immediately restart it to avoid a collision. i have utilized fuel cleaners and changed the spark plugs etc. in a effort to resolve the issue. it happened again today at low speed in a parking lot fortunately..just died without warning. i researched this online and found that this is a common engine problem complaint with the durango. today, this occurred with over 3/4 tank of fresh fuel in the tank. this problem constitutes an immediate safety hazard to owners of these vehicles and i am requesting that nhtsa initiates an investigation into it's cause ( s ) - thank you - related website link re: common problem - http://www.carcomplaints.com/dodge/durango/2005/engine/stalling_without_warning.shtml . *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while driving 45 mph the vehicle stalled without any warning. in addition, she mentioned that on a different occasion the four wheel service warning lamp illuminated and all for tires seized. as a result, the vehicle lunged forward abnormally. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the front control module had an internal short and needed to be replaced. the remedy failed to repair the issue. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 78,000 and the current mileage was 91,759.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that the fuel tank leaked when attempting to top off the fuel tank. in addition, the vehicle stalled often, would not restart, and the headlights failed to illuminate. the vehicle was taken to gettle dodge ram and chrysler (2323 tamiami trail, punta gorda, fl 33950, (941) 347-6706), but the cause of the failure could not de determined. however, the dealer replaced an unknown fuse in the engine and the vehicle restarted. the manufacturer was not informed of the failures. the failure mileage was 130,000.
