Problems with 2005 Dodge Durango ENGINE

On average, the 2005 Dodge Durango starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 106 384 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2005 Dodge Durango

Engine stalling while low speed driving, when deceleration, while making a stop sign or waiting at a red light. this issue has occurred persistently in different occasions and settings. although the majority of the times the vehicle's shutting off occurs frequently at low speed, it has happened while driving at a higher normal speed. chrysler company does not have this issue listed on some vehicles of the same year 2005 that evidently shows certain defects, therefore, owners are immediately dismiss or ignored and left with a life threatening vehicle on their hands.

2005 dodge durango ltd with a 5.7l hemi. stalls out in traffic often when it rains whether stationary or moving. according to people on youtube, this is a common problem and needs to be addressed by the manufacturer. this has happened on a few occasions, but i am reporting the most recent. the problem is that water drains onto the manifold and somehow causes the vehicle to stall.

My durango was serviced on 2/23/2018 with regular upkeep stuff like new battery, oil change, ect. about a week later, my rpms would jump and drop while on the highway. on 3/10/2018, i started my car and drove a few blocks and it did just fine, later that evening, i drove about 4 blocks and my engine died. no check engine light, i was able to start right back up and make it about a block before it died again, able to restart it and make it home before my engine died again. i took it to the shop and they told me that no codes could be pulled and that my car was shorting out due to my radiator and water pump. we replaced those and my thermostat and they said it should be fine. drove the car about 15 miles or less and it died again. so i took it to the next shop and they could not tell me anything because it never died or acted up in their care. so they told me to drive it until it does it again. the [xxx] thing died two blocks away from the shop. the guys at the shop told me to go fill up my gas tank and put fuel injector cleaner in it. i didn't have any problems making it home or to work the next day. i was headed to lunch the next day and it dies before i even leave the work parking lot. i drive home and it dies twice, all able to start right back up. i live maybe 5 minutes away from my job and my gas tank went from full to half a tank just by going to work and home. today, i left work and made it a couple of blocks from home when it died and would not start back up!! i had to tow my car home. the dodge house says its 150.00 dollars to just pull the car into their bays and when it doesn't show codes or the engine light is not on, they can not do any thing further and send me on my way. they obviously have a problem with this death trap and they need to fix it. parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. ...

The transfer case make clicking counts when driving and while car is idle. it also makes these clicking noises while the car is off putting the car into 4 lo on its own. the car will sometimes shut off while driving low speeds and attempting to make a turn. the battery dies frequently after a week of not is use.

My car caught on fire from the hood area (i have photos) and air bags never deployed . i took my car in and the air bags were replaced but never deployed and car is a total lost due to fire.

After coming to a complete stop at a stop sign and allowing children to cross in the crosswalk, my vehicle try's to accelerate/jump forward even though my foot has the brake pedal completely pushed down. the schools in my town get packed with traffic and you have to kinda of stop and go at a slow pace for long periods of time. my 2005 dodge durango try's to nudge forward on its own when slowly stopping and going in traffic. very dangerous for this to be happening around elementary schools with children around. i hope this known safety issue is able to be resolved. this is a daily occurrence, whether i'm picking up or dropping off kids at school, or i'm creeping along very slowly stopping and going looking for a parking spot, or at a red light or slowing down before entering a driveway, or anytime i'm in a driverhru and i have to creep along and stop and go. would love for this to be resolved. i will even pay for it, i just would like it to be fixed because it's dangerous.

It is a awd car but sometime the 4lo light comes on with a very annoying noise from the bottom of the car or engine, then the speed being slowed down significantly, the car becomes hard to keep going. the streaking sound and the speed being reduced like the break being stepped on abrubtly makes me pull over for safety.

For no reason the vehicle shuts off with no warning. no lights on the dash or anything, shuts off and no steering. not safe to drive. it has happened while driving and while sitting at a light, no warning signs. acts fine, both times during city street driving.

I was about to enter a storage facility and was slowly easing my foot off the brake when when the engine revved loudly my suv lurched forward and accelerated out of my control tore through the storage gate that didn't finish opening totally destroying the facilitiy main gate. the suv kept accelerating as i was hitting the brake then finally stopped.

Several times, while driving my 2005 dodge durango, it has shut off. this has happened 4 times. 1st: i was stopped at a highway intersection and it shut off, 2nd it shut off while stopping in the median getting ready to turn into work, 3rd: i was slowing down trying to turn off the highway when it shut off and almost caused me to hit a stop sign since the power steering went out and the brakes didn't work. 4th: i was pulling out of a parking lot and it shut off. i had no power steering or brakes. i had children in the car 2 out of the 4 times this has happened. this is very unsafe and i feel like it's a fatality waiting to happen. there has been no indication this was going to happen before it happened. i have been on highways or very highly traveled road ways. each time, i have had to stop and restart this truck. once it threw a random misfire code, but has not had a code since. we have replaced spark plugs and the 02 senor, but it is still happening. 90+ people have complained on carcomplaints.com about this happening while driving and almost wrecking. that is how i found this site. this needs to be handled in the utmost urgency. this is the only transportation i have and it worries me each time i have to get behind the wheel or have my children ride in the truck. this puts everyone's lives at risk. i don't have money to buy another vehicle or to even trade this one in on something. i don't have money to spend guessing at what is wrong with this truck.. dodge needs to recall this and find out what is happening before someone gets killed. dodge paying to fix this is a lot better then paying someone's family that has been badly hurt or killed by someone trying to overlook this.

Engine cuts off at any speed, but especially at low idle, when nearing an intersection, or turning the vehicle at a lower, safer speed. this happens on highway, residential streets, stoplights, basically anywhere at anytime.

The vehicle starts fine and typically runs fine, but stalls out randomly. this started happening about 8 months ago, and happens about 3 times a week now. sometimes it stalls on the freeway at 60 mph and you lose power steering and brakes, but most of the time it happens when decelerating to turn a corner, which is really frustrating as you lose power steering and brakes and has caused me to go off the road or hit curbs if i can't muscle the vehicle through the remainder of the turn. luckily i haven't been in an accident due to this yet, but it is only a matter of time. the check engine light is not on, and there are no issues with the dash lights and gauges. the dodge dealer says they are not aware of any issues, but online forums show hundreds if not thousands of people having the same issue with this vehicle. *tr

I have a 2005 dodge durango with the 5.7 hemi engine.. it has 80,000 miles and just recently the engine started shutting off at random times when driving, mostly when i hit a bump in the road.. i have researched this with the national highway safety board website and see there is a hundreds of complaints from feburary 2005 thru present .. there was an investigation opened in 2005 pe05-027 then it was transferred to an engineering analysis ( ea05-018) and then nothing.. i would like to know if the nhtsa dropped the ball on this?? there is no further answers to the complaint.. please advise me what do i have to do to get a n answer to this problem, which is a manufactures error that is going to get me killed or someone else.

This vehicle routinely stalls and shuts off while drive, decelaration, coasting, and also while at a complete stop. i have already had one accident due to this issue and has become increasingly dangerous to drive.

When in motion, vehicle's rpm will drop to 0 (randomly, no way to tell when coming), along with a loss of power steering and various electronics within the vehicle. problem is usually fixed by restarting vehicle, but it has been very dangerous - especially on the highway. has happened at least 5 times during my ownership of the vehicle (4 years)

The car stalls alot whenever you're at a light or going slow speeds. will turn off and needs to be turned on. the ignition locks and the key wont turn when trying to turn the car on. the airbag light is constantly blinking when the driver seat belt is not on. when the seatbelt is on, the airbag light is permanently on. this morning the front passenger tire area make a loud clunk when i turned left. shortly after as i was going about 35 mph it felt as if i had a flat tire so i pulled over. turns out the entire ball joint had broken and the front passenger tire had fallen to the side.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while driving approximately 40 mph, an abnormal noise was heard in the front of the vehicle. in addition, the check engine warning light and oil warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the technician refused to diagnose the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 128,000.

When stopping or turning at slower speeds my car dies all of a sudden this has put me in situations where i have almost wrecked , after taking it to the dealer a few times and then telling me nothing is wrong i find out that this has been investigated on 2 occasions but no recall !!!!! this is putting my family , myself and other people on the road at risk this happens when i am slowing down coming to a stop

My durango has only 28,000 mi. drove about 2 mi. for my pt and an hour later i could not get my durango started after several attempts. called a tow company and had my car towed to a licensed mechanic. after the vehicle sat for about 6 hours, the mechanic started the car and said he can not find anything wrong so take the car home. i went on line and found a website where people shared their experiences with their 2005 durango and i am very, very afraid to drive my car now. they wrote that they have had experiences when the engine would stall while driving on the road. what is going on? no recall for this problem/phenomena?

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. on several occasions, the vehicle idled excessively. the contact stated that the check engine warning indicator illuminated intermittently. while stopped at several traffic lights and construction work zones, the accelerator pedal was depressed and the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was taken to napleton chrysler jeep dodge ram (located at 1460 e osceola pkwy, kissimmee, fl 34744, (855) 437-9197) to be diagnosed; however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. the vehicle was also taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. the contact was informed that the catalytic converter needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not contacted or made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

Both the crankshaft position sensor and the 2 4 transmission solenoid constantly go bad. the result is loss of power and/or engine shuts off. in a scenario where the vehicle is traveling on a highway/roadway at high speed, this may cause a collision. i have replaced the crankshaft position sensor 4 times in 6 months and the 2 4 transmission solenoid twice.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while driving at any speed, the vehicle lost power without warning. the vehicle was pulled over and restarted. the dealer was unable to diagnose the failure. the failure recurred several times. the manufacturer was made aware of the complaint, but did not assist. the failure was not remedied. the failure mileage was approximately 86,000.

Opened the drivers door after a storm and observed standing water in the drivers side floorboard. tried to start but the battery was dead. (daily driver w battery @ 1yr old). placed battery on a charger and was able to start motor. engine was reving between idle and 1500 rpm rapidly and would not respond to throttle inputs. instrument cluster lights all on and navigation display was on but not legible. looked for the source of the water, and it appears to be coming from around the drivers side front pillar area and leaking down the inside kick panel.

While driving at variable speeds my 2005 dodge durango slt 5.7l truck, without warning, will shut-off making it hard to stop & steer to safety. this has happened several times but the most recent & severe time was yesterday, i was at a speed of 55 mph on 695 when my durango shut-off without warning. i was able to pull onto the shoulder without causing a accident. my dodge was able to restart without warning lights flashing or indication but will randomly shut-off without warning at least 4-6 times a week while driving.

My car repeatedly cuts off while i am driving. i noticed that other people have the same issue with the same model as i have which a 2005 dodge durango. i did my research and it was identified by dodge as a low maneuver issue. one incident that happens a few days ago was that my vehicle shut off on a curve while merging on the highway. i am very luck that it was a car behind me and they were not going fast. my car shut off and i lose control of the steering because of the loss of power. i have to put the car in park and then try to start the vehicle. i would like this issue addressed i have complained about this since 2006.

I turned left sharply into a parking spot and the vehicle completely stalled on me upon doing this. i lost all engine power, steering and brake control. i was able to restart the vehicle immediately and park the vehicle. for the previous 3 weeks or so the vehicle has sputtered and been sluggish when turning sharply into parking spots or around sharp corners but has never stalled. 8/19/15 was the first incident of the vehicle completely stalling.

The car dint show any sing of having problem staring or stalling or nothing the engine just made a big noise like something blew up and everything shut off. i am glad i dint had my kids with at the time cuz i was driving all day and the truck was fine it doesn't make sense how it just blew up out of nowhere and for only having 105 miles on it its too soon when everything was done in time.

Durango quit runing wile going 45 mph

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while driving at various speeds, the contact noticed an abnormal clicking noise from beneath the vehicle. the svc, 4wd, and 4lo warning lights illuminated. the engine revved independently. when the accelerator pedal was depressed, the vehicle failed to accelerate. when making a turn, the steering wheel seized and required excessive force. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who replaced the tie rod and front end suspension, but the failure persisted. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 183,000. updated 09/25/15*lj updated 11/14/2017*cn

The transfer case shifts by its self.the vehicle shifts into lock all on it's own, then the svc 4wd light comes on. sometimes when the vehicle is turned off you can hear the transfer shift back and forth from awd to 4 lock now its stuck in 4lo this happens stationary and in motion.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while driving approximately 25 mph, the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was able to be restarted. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 140,000. in addition, the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 15v313000 (air bags) however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the contact had not experienced an air bag failure.

Transfer case motor engages while driving going from awd to four wheel lo. this can potentially cause a very bad accident. 4wlo light flickers and transfer case motor engages even with vehicle shut off. *tr

Vehicle would high idle then when put in gear it would not take gas and would continue to run even after putting it in park and turning the key off and taking it out. this is a very serious problem i would like an investigation to see if anyone else has had this same problem. i would like a response please this scares me alot. *tr

Vehicle engine shut off/stalled with no warning. dash lights turned off, brakes wouldn't work. *tr

The dodge durango 2005 model in my case will shut off very often now when the steering wheel is turn...this often times happen when pulling in or backing out of a parking lot and the vehicle would take up 5-20mins to restart.this happen when the vehicle is cold or warm it doesn't matter.i have seen online this is a wide spread problem with the durangos and i'm wondering why are folks allowed to suffer through this issue in the mean time the dealership pretend as if they're not aware of the issue which is clearly a lie from all the complaint i've seen online about this very issue...going back for years.... *tr

I was circling to the left around a build to park and doing about 5 mph when the engine stalled. it restarted immediately but stalled again as i turned right into a parking spot. another stall happened in the afternoon as i was attempting to park straight into a parking spot. a fourth stall happened while i was stopped at a red light. with the fourth stall, i noticed that the tachometer suddenly dropped from about 700 rpm (where it usually idles) to about 300 rpm, hovered there for a moment and then stalled. *tr

Stalling at various speeds (15 to 40 mph). complete loss of power. sometimes will re-start in park and sometimes in neutral. changed crank and cam sensor. had throttle body cleaned. fuel injector cleaner used. nothing fixed the problem. this is not the durango problem with the "leaking cowl". had the cowl gasket replaced. there is no water dripping on the engine causing misfire or "hydro locking". soon after suv would not start at all. the dodge dealership replaced the pcm (main computer) costing almost $1300.00.stalled twice since then. dangerous problem *js

Engine will without warning lurch forward. it will also completely shut down making steering and braking extremely difficult. this vehicle had no codes showing and repair shop can't replicate the problem this lurching of the vehicle has occurred almost daily. and has completely shut down twice. i drive with two kids in the car and this is extremely dangerous. their are several complaints with the exact same problem. *tr

'takata recall' there are several things that are going on with my 2005 dodge durango slt 4.7 liter v8, 4 wheel drive suv that are alarming. every single time i fuel the vehicle it shoots gasoline right back on out of the gas tank where you insert the fuel nozzle and covers me with gas! plus i have replaced the throttle position sensor several times, along with the idle air control valve, and map sensor just to try and correct the stalling while either slowing down to come to a stop, or it also occurs quite frequently when the vehicle is at normal operational temperature and just idling. the rpm gauge inside the vehicle starts fluctuating irratically before stalling. you lose all power and control over the vehicle when it stalls! another problem that's present is hard shifting, or the vehicle fails to shift until it almost pegs out the rpm gauge. it's like both idle and shift are affected creating a safety issue. the transmission has been serviced regularly, tuneups, etc. however despite staying on top of all vehicle maintenance requirements the vehicle still runs poorly and has been doing this since i have owned it at 78,000 miles. it's now got 113k on it and i honestly think the vehicle is a safety hazard and needs the manufacturing company to address all of these issues! this is an ongoing issue that no matter how many times i have the vehicle repaired and the parts replaced it continues to stall out and shift incorrectly there's 18 trouble codes that keep coming up including the air bag on the passenger side, which really doesn't seem to fit what's really going on. no trouble codes for the fuel tank shooting gas out of the inlet pipe that leads to gas tank. this stalling and loss of power happens at all speeds on the freeway, city driving, or literally parked or slowing down from any speed. any kind of weather condition. problem started 8/01/2014 to present day.

Vehicle stalled while driving, completely froze up. was unable to use brakes, steering wheel was also affected. was very scary as we were driving in traffic. this has happened on more than one occasion while driving and also when backing out of driveway. *tr

While i'm driving down the road it could be the interstate or in town, doing 30 to 55 miles per hour depending on where i am, my husband's engine light will turn on in his 2005 dodge durango after the wheel begins stiffening and my lights all shut off and i am costing into opposing traffic lane or in the middle of traffic with my 4 children and myself, sometimes it is just me and once it was with my husband and children. the engine light will stay solid and all of this happens after when suv will cut off with no warning, instantly my steering wheel gets stiff and i cannot turn, my lights go off and the radio and headlights shut off. i have no control over the vehicle at the time. this us happening more and more. this also has happened when i am coming to a stoplight or a stop sign other times when i'm coming out of a stop and the suv is still running at that time. very unpredictable and dangerous. no warnings, he has had the suv 1 year. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 5 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was able to restart. the contact also stated that there was a ticking noise when driving. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 68,000.

Vehicle misfires during acceleration. almost caused vehicle to be rear ended pulling out into traffic. after having it looked at by the dealer, found out i am not the only one with the problem. it stems from a design defect in the rain cowl that allows water to pass through the windshield wiper opening where it runs onto the engine and pools in the spark plug holes, causing a short. chrysler redesigned the cowl to correct the problem but did not notify owners or recall the vehicles to fix the issue. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while operating the vehicle in wet conditions, the engine suddenly began to misfire and the check engine light illuminated. the contact indicated that the vehicle had stalled on several occasion while being operated in the rain or after washing the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. the technician diagnosed that the problem was caused by water leaking into the engine compartment causing the engine sensor to activate. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure but no assistance was offered. the failure mileage was 130,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the oil and engine warning lights illuminated. the contact mentioned that an abnormal noise emitted from the engine. the vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 156,800.

I was driving on 65 hwy north in missouri and for no apparent reason the durango stalled and i lost all power mechanical and electrical i could not steer or brake it was all i could do to maintain my lane i had just recently had an oil change and still had about 1000 more miles before i needed a new change it was a scary experience i could not restart the vehicle in neutral i finally got pulled over to the side of the road and got it restarted had to drive back home under 25 miles per hour or it would stall again it was very unsafe and endangered me my wife and my 3 children. *tr

Just purchased my 2005 durango 5.7 hemi limited used at the end of 2013. have had it for less than 6 months. after having it for a month the check engine light came on. the next day my durango stalled while i was driving at around 40-45 miles an hour in downtown san diego!! i put it in neutral and it started right back up. i thought it was just bad gas because the check engine light went off. but in the last few weeks it has done the same thing about 10 times. my friend hooked it up to his code reader and it said my egr valve needs replaced. but now i'm seeing all of these complaints on here about the same issues and i'm quite worried. i am also having a problem with the fuel tank. i can't fill up my tank or the gasoline shoots out everywhere!! i noticed there is no metal piece that closes off when you pull the nozzle out. also my in dash navigational system/cd player/radio quit working. screen on in dash console is just lines. now my blue tooth in the rear view mirror only works intermittently. have to close the rear hatch twice for cargo light warning on dash to go out. charger port in front panel stopped working on the second day i owned it. seems as if there are some major electrical issues here!! i owned a dodge dakota years ago and never had any problems with it!! i'm really surprised at the fact that dodge is not taking care of these issues. i will be contacting a dealer for the recall issues and will let you know how that goes, especially since i've read more than one complaint on here that the dealerships aren't honoring the recalls. ridiculous!! *tr
