We have classified the 162 complaints from 2005 Dodge Durango about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
Ignition switch locked up this is the 10th time that it has done this and i don't know what to do the dealership said there is a recall on my car but i don't know. *tr
As i went to work today, i noticed my truck was kicking when accelerating down the street. as i would come up to a complete stop, the truck would still keep on going. i have been hearing clicking when i open up the driver door , and on occasion on my daily commute to work, i was noticing the 4lo light blink. well, today, i drove to work, and on the interstate, the 4lo light came on without blinking. a solid color. i started to see a lot of white smoke come from under the hood of the car, and from the bottom of the car as well. i pulled over to look at the vehicle and noticed that the truck was leaking all the tranny fluid. i was blocks from work, when i went back into the durango and noticed that the extreme heat light had turned on in the dashboard. i waited about 30 minutes until i turned my truck back on , and begin to drive to work. it was still kicking and now it felt like the tranny was slipping. i finally made it to work. the truck was engulfed in smoke . i've noticed that when the 4lo lights start blinking, i have a hard time trying to turn the wheels left or right, and my wheels lock. this should be a transfer case recall... its a real big safety issue. *tr
Vehicle engine shut off/stalled with no warning. dash lights turned off, brakes wouldn't work. *tr
Was driving and all of a sudden i smelt something burning in the dash board and all instrument lights started to get dim and dimmer and then i notice smoke coming from the dashboard and all most immediately the door locks and windows stop working, the car would lock itself and the windows stop working at all and at this point the rear door do not open at all. i ask the dealer at the lot that i bought it from at the time of purchase if the vehicle had been in a accident or was there any recalls on this vehicle and he said no and that i bought the van as is and to this day i cant get this dealer to see that this car is unsafe to operate and that i am not going to risk mine nor my kids life to drive it and he will not even trade me out of this car for something better. the other day i was fueling the van and all of a sudden gasoline shot back out the tank and spilled gas all over me, scared the hell out of me. not only that, i was driving down the interstate in my state and out of no where my seat on its own terms began to move forward all the way to the steering wheeling pressing me to the wheel and i am 6ft 3in tall and weigh 230lbs i again call the dealership to complain and got the same story that i agreed to purchase the vehicle as is, i agreed that i did but i told him that i do not think that he told me everything that i needed to know about possible safety issues. and again i have four children age 6 months to four years old whom i love very dearly. *tr
While driving on the freeway, i noticed that my 4 lo warning light was flashing on my instrument panel. once i came to a safe stop, i could hear what sounded like my 4 wheel drive actively trying to engage itself by making a clanking noise. several days later, it did the same thing, only this time, it succeeded in shifting itself into 4 wheel drive but only for a brief period. now it does this on a daily basis and will even do this in my garage with the keys out of the ignition. it will also do this when i use the key fob to unlock my doors. please look into this as there are several other durango owners who are experiencing the same issue. my worry is that it will find a way to shift itself into 4 lo while either my wife or myself are driving down the freeway. if that happens, it could be catastrophic. this is something that dodge needs to recall to prevent any injuries or deaths. people have attempted to replace the transfer case, replace wiring, and several other fix attempts but to no avail. as a 16-year career firefighter, i am pleading with you to look into this. *js
My 2005 dodge durango has an issue with the transfer case. when using the key fob to unlock the doors, the transfer case will switch from awd to 4wd hi on its on. also while driving the service 4wd light will appear and it will switch to 4wd hi and if going around a turn. my wheels have locked up causing me to slide and almost hitting another vehicles. i believe this is unsafe and have been many complaints. how many more of these have to happen and ends up taking someones life. i would like to see this issue resolved. *tr
Vehicle stalled while pulling into a parking stall. when that happens you lose complete power and it is extremely difficult to steer. the dodge dealer claims to have no idea of what i'm talking about nor did it do the same to them when they were driving. when they called to talk about fixing some issues with the vehicle they were trying to charge me $959.00 to change an alternator that is working at 90% and the efr. this does not guarantee the problem will be fixed. these are 2 (two) codes their machine is throwing. their machine does not indicate anything about stalling. *tr
Having 3 major issues that can be life threatening..1) driving at any speed sometimes vehicle will completely shut off leaving me on the highway at 60mph no power steering 2) filling gas tank up no matter if i go slow will always spit lots of gas back out of the neck 3) 4x4 is engaging by itself. i can park it turn motor off and you can hear it going into 4x4 without me being in the vehicle or touching the 4x4 knob. this has cause me issue steering when it decides to go into 4x4 mode by itself. i need to know if their is current complaints about the above issues and how can i get them fix without me paying. *tr
Vehicle stalled while driving, completely froze up. was unable to use brakes, steering wheel was also affected. was very scary as we were driving in traffic. this has happened on more than one occasion while driving and also when backing out of driveway. *tr
summary: when i parked and exited/locked my 2005 dodge durango, i could hear the transfer case switching all on its own. on my way home the svc 4wd light lit and then 4lo began flashing. we left on vacation and when i came home and backed the car out there was a loud noise and it is undriveable. i have read many reports of other ownwer's vehicles doing the same thing on years 2004 & 2005 with the hemi motor and the dealers not knowing what is going on and charging several expensive repairs for different findings not always fixing the problem. *tr
The tire pressure warning light on my 2005 dodge durango limited hemi has been on for approximately 3-4 years. other than this issue, the vehicle is in excellent condition (50,500 miles). after dealing with several dealerships, i filed a complaint with chrysler and was given a case number. a chrysler case manager named "paul" (1-800-763-8422 ext. 66371) notified me via voice-mail today that they will not pay to resolve/investigate the matter. the case manager is clearly avoiding speaking to me by contacting me at my home number during the day, even after i left him a message with my primary contact number. the issue: this vehicle was subject to an instrument cluster/wiring recall in 2007. i obtained a copy of the claim form. the cluster was not replaced, however, the wiring was modified. apparently, this recall was done due to overheating issues. so far, i haven't experienced this issue. but the tire pressure warning light should not be on - especially given the fact that my vehicle is not equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system (tpms). clearly, the wrong cluster is installed in the vehicle and/or the wiring modification was done incorrectly as part of the recall. i believe, these issues came to the forefront when the battery was low and/or replaced. the internet/forums are littered with issues regarding the instrument cluster and electrical issues with the durangos manufactured during 2005-2007. the "labor operation number" is 08-g0-71-82 as part of safety recall g07. i am in the process of obtaining a quote from the dealership to investigate and fix the matter. a rough estimate is the cost will be approximately $1,000. chrysler is avoiding taking responsibility for an issue(s) directly related to a matter subject to a previous recall. i would greatly appreciate this matter be thoroughly investigated. please contact me. *js
As i approached my vehicle and used the remote to open the doors, i heard a noise under the vehicle like gears were shifting on their own without the vehicle even running. i started the vehicle and started driving. when i went into a parking lot and turned left to park, it was like someone was putting on the brakes making it difficult for me to turn and to accelerate--felt like i was in 4wd despite not shifting to 4wd from awd. i nearly hit the car next to mine because i had to accelerate so hard to get into the spot without getting hit from the rear. i turned the car off and let it sit for 1/2 hour and restarted it and drove home. when i let the car sit in the garage, i was in the garage and heard gears shifting on their own while the vehicle was not running. this has already happened 3 times and it is quite scary! if i try to turn left and this happens on the road, i could get into a serious accident. *tr
The car locks it's wheels and doesn't run. when coming to a stop light the brakes do not respond and it jerks trying to stop and accelerate at the same time. the ignition switch also catches and does not start. i've taken the durango to the dealership and i'm always told that nothing is wrong with it. *tr
My durango is one of hundreds possibly thousands of vehicles that has the transfer case mysteriously shifting on its own. it can be triggered by the unlock button, even the dome light. the transfer case is now shifting all the time in and out of position both when the vehicle is under operation and parked. the is dangerous and dodge claims to know nothing. i spent 10 minutes and found hundreds of chrysler vehicles with the same symptoms and no definitive answers. (google dodge durango svc 4wd light) please help. *tr
Ac/heater blower harness and resistor burning out, leaving me without heat defrost or air conditioner. this model of durango can not be driven down the road with all the windows down for cool air in the summer. you get such a deafing thump noise.
I have replaced the cylinder switch on my truck which cost me $465.00 to get a new 1 in order to crank my truck aaa repaired this for me in 2014,i've also had a leak sealed up in the coolant area all my freon was leaking out now the windows on the truck will not go down the only thing that opens is the sunroof.i had the truck put on a machine at a shop here they said it was the canbus system under the hood that is inside the computer that is causing this but my truck also has a recall on it as well,i have a white 2005 dodge durango hemi 7.5l truck vin number [xxx] yet to hear anything on the recall 07/25/2015. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
On 3/19/2014 i was driving in the middle lane of a very busy street called gratiot ave with heavy traffic and the engine just stopped. i could not accelerate and had just enough speed to slowly merge right and turn into a shopping mall off the street in order to miss oncoming traffic. my truck had completely stalled. *tr
Vehicle switches in & out of 4wd on its own while driving, or puts itself into neutral on the 4wd, also hear something engaging when unlocking doors with remote when parked or remote won't work at all to unlock doors. mechanic found lots of other mechanics working on same issue on a forum he subscribes too and i found tons of durango & some pickup owners complaining of and trying to get the same issue fixed. i have had several other minor electrical issues in my durango for the past two years so i am convinced this is an electrical issue. *tr
When you go to put gas in it the gas wont shut off and i have an inside light that says gas cap even though we have replaced the gas cap and i have rust where the gas has run down the car. im also having trouble with my gauges in the vehicle and it takes spells that it doesn't want to take gas. *tr
I wanted to share with you my recent experience at my local dodge dealer, spartanburg chrysler dodge jeep first, i will never go to spartanburg dodge again, for anything. they tried to charge me to correct a nhtsa recall (instrument cluster fire hazard), which they did complete. my cluster still tells me there are problems with 2 systems my vehicle does not have installed. regarding the 2nd recall i had them address (fuel tank replacement). i brought me vehicle in with nearly a half tank of gas, when i picked it up it had approximately 1/2 gal. my on board computer told me i had 0 miles to empty. i was told they had no way to transfer the fuel from the old tank to the new, which is bs. they have to get the fuel out of the tank as it is against the law to dispose of the fuel, i suspect someone got a free fill up. in addition, i had the dealer had my vehicle for 4 days and still have not resolved the recall. when i came to pick my vehicle up the second time, they tried to charge me over $100 dollars for a "diagnostic fee" for rechecking the recall on the cluster, but i later found out they didn't do anything at all to the cluster the second time. when i told them i would not pay for the recall to be fixed they threatened to keep my vehicle, upon calling the sheriff's office to retrieve my property they changed their mind. they brought me the keys to my vehicle and pointed me in the direction of it. when i found it, the battery was dead from a light left on, no one came to help me get the vehicle started. i had to call my wife to come and give me a jump start. i would like to have this instrument cluster replaced as it should have been the first time per the recall. Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while driving 55 mph over a pot hole, the lights on the instrument panel and the radio failed. the contact stated that he tapped on the instrument panel and the lights illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where they stated that the instrument cluster needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and they stated that the vehicle was repaired once before for the same failure. the failure mileage was 127,000.
Beginning friday, january 31, 2014 in the evening the dome lights of my durango would not turn off after the normal delay. we tried several things to shut them off but they stayed on. the car started fine saturday, february 1, 2014 in the morning and i took it to run errands. i noticed again though the lights stayed on. that evening we parked the car as normal in the garage. at about 3:30 am sunday, february 2, 2014 we were awakened by smoke in the house. we found the heaviest smoke in the room connected to the garage. we got our children and pets out of the house and called the fire department. when they arrived the durango was on fire. the entire interior burned. there was substantial damage to our garage and some damage to the interior adjoining room. the fire inspector told us that the fire originated in the interior headlining of the durango. starting at the front by the windshield and then moving to the back of the vehicle. the fire department put the fire out and the vehicle was towed to a body shop. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 65 mph, the four wheel drive activated independently and the vehicle independently shifted between gears. the failure occurred on numerous occasions. the contact also stated that the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was able to restart. in addition, the a/c independently operated, the headlights and the instrument panel lights failed intermittently. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 92,000.
The central timer module (ctm) or body computer as some call it went bad causing the 4 wheel drive to engage or disengage without warning. when the 4 wheel drive engages while driving it makes it nearly impossible to make tight turns and at low speeds you are unable to turn at all. the part also causes the wipers to randomly engage, the door locks to randomly engage or disengage, and more. *tr
When actuating the left turn signal, the right turn signal comes on. problem occurs for a short time (a day) and then disappears. problem appears intermittently. if you are watching traffic, you will not even notice the problem and that you are signalling the wrong direction. *tr
I was pulling into a parking space and the car started skipping and jumping, vehicle was hard to steer and it also hesitated to go, turning was very difficult. the 4 lock light was flashing on all by itself and the knob has been on awd i only rarely switch the vehicle to 4 lock in the winter time. this makes about a dozen times it has happened to this vehicle. twice in one day is very scary. i am very afraid of what might happen if i am going a higher speed at the time it decides to mess up. i have talked to a mechanic and he has never heard of the issue but says it could be very dangerous if it would happen while driving a higher rate of speed. i have search on line by typing '05 dodge durango 4 lock by itself' and there are a lot of people having the same issue. also with no luck figuring the problem, one person had replaced the transfer case 3 times and it was only a temporary fix. *tr
My durango shift into 4 wheel hi and 4 wheel lo by itself while driving and while sitting. this cause my truck while driving to jerk and it locks the wheels up. this situation causes difficulty to turn also. *tr
While operating the vehicle the service 4wd light came on. at some point after that the transfer case shifted into 4hi lock.i scanned the obdii and had no codes present. also scanned the 4wd selector switch and it showed the switch was operational, but the transfer case shift motor was not shifting. dropped the vehicle off at an independent transmission shop one week later and it sat for a few hours and when they went to road test it no warning lights and it was now in awd. again the repair shop did an obd scan and came up with no codes.if these vehicles were to shift into four wheel drive (low or high range ) at highway speeds of 65 mph i feel major driveline damage and or failure will result, which could lead to serious injury or death. *tr
2005 dodge durango 5.7 hemi stalls upon acceleration. during acceleration in the forward direction the vehicle will lose all electrical function and shut down the engine causing the motorist to be stranded in the middle of an intersection or other dangerous section of roadway. loss of electrical function can be attributed to the close proximity of the positive battery cable to the egr pipe on the right side of the engine. during acceleration the engine will torque over causing the egr pipe to make contact with the battery cable thus causing the plastic sheathing to become chafed. over time this chafing will wear through the plastic sheathing and expose the bare copper wire allowing it to come in contact with the metal egr pipe. the contact of the copper wire from the positive battery cable to the metal egr pipe creates a direct short which in turn shuts down the electrical system and any engine control functions. in some instances this short can cause the battery cable to heat up enough to catch the plastic insulation on fire and possibly lead to battery explosion.
The vehicles dash board lights will all light up, at one point i would have the gas floored and it would feel like i'm towing a house it started getting worse to the point the car would stall while driving so i would put it in neutral and it would start back up when the lights aren't on it runs fine but once the light come on the dash board it acts up and all the lights come on temperature, check engine, air bag, 4x4, oil light ,battery light ,etc dodge flashed my computer it worked for a week and then started again i have had many mechanics look at it along with dodge and no one can figure out the problem , recently starting 5/27/15 the problems have proceeded to get extremely dangerous now once all the lights light up it stalls and may not restart several times i've been stuck on the highway waiting an hour or two to restart it and now it only gets me a few feet then stalls plus its now doing it with no lights on the dash ,rpms ,mph etc , and when it drives sometimes there is nothing on dash but when i hit brakes all the gauges will shoot up temperature and fuel even if its not a full rank it will say it then when i step on gas the dash board goes out, i have contacted corporate dodge to resolve this issue telling them i've seen several numerous complaints the same as mine but yet no recall so they now want me once again to take it to dodge, june 9th 2015 , but today june 3rd 2015 , i stalled in the street on rt 9 and it would not start at all to the point i had to call a tow truck then once the tow truck dropped it at my house it started but all the lights were lit up on dash ,if i was able to post pictures and videos on here i would because i video the dash every time it does it and i plan to show dodge the videos on the 9th , dodge needs to resolve this issue. *tr
Vehicle stalls at low speeds and deceleration, idling hard at a stop and while in park, will stall when idling hard, gas spills out of inlet when filling up completely, sluggish in temperatures below 30 degrees and above 80 degrees, requires more than normal maintenance, service tech's can never diagnose the causes of stalling or idling issues, think it might concern the throttle body, transmission has torqued itself out before, stripped screws, rebuilt at 90000 miles. just waiting for it to go again. this vehicle has been nothing but issues ever since i bought it used. every fix just feels like a band aid to the manufacturing problems it has. *tr
The vehicle stalls while making turning maneuvers at low speeds which disables the power steering and brakes. this has occurred on numerous occasions but the dealer is unable to duplicate the problem and has not been able to correct this issue. this has always occur during decelerations, such as braking for a stop sign or traffic signal. when it happen i must immediately put the vehicle in park and restart it, but luckily this has not let to an accident yet. *tr
Was driving down the road then came to my neighborhood --- the road was clear but the turn light up ahead had just changed --- so i had time to make my turn into my neighborhood but when i attempted to turn the vehicle just shut off the -- there were two oncoming cars the one in lead began blowing but the car could not be steered or anything. luckily the cars had time to stop --- so, i quickly put the vehicle in park and attempted to restart the vehicle. thankfully it started and i was able to continue to pull into my neighborhood. my 10-year old daughter was in the front passenger side and began to scream when she heard the horns blowing --- this could have been tragic---what is the problem and why are these vehicles still able to be sold. i just purchased this vehicle on saturday. then while in my neighborhood i called a friend we test drove the vehicle -- the haul/tow light was on then off -- the right rear light was off the on the way back to be park it came on again-- the passenger air bag light was on then a few minutes later it was off. in addition the vehicle shut off again twice while turning the corner onto another street in the neighborhood. *tr ...
I was riding down the road and my lighting system on my car begin to dim and the my speedometer begin to drop down and the car begin to slow down loss power to the car the car shut off. i was so scare at this point. i do not want to drive my 2005 dodge durango please help me with this matter. *tr
There is a problem with my car switching into 4lo. when i unlock my car it makes a clicking noise under the car like it is switching from awd to 4lo. also, my 4lo light flashes on my dash and it sounds like it is trying to switch even though it is left in awd. *tr
The vehicle will automatically engage itself into 4-wheel drive mode. the incidents usually happen at low speeds. although, the incident can, has, and will happen at higher speeds. when it occurs at low speeds, the vehicle will accelerate slowly and refuse to turn. when the incident happens at higher speeds, the vehicle will seemingly lock the tires and if not handled correctly the driver can lose complete control of the suv. this particular defect seems to be a common issue among dodge durango 2nd generation owners. many say the dodge dealerships are skeptical on what exact repair is necessary to fix the apparent safety issue. durango owners experiences with technicians show many times they reportedly point the finger at various high dollar repairs. some have had success with replacing the transfer case motor but some who have pursued this repair have again reported the same issue after the repair was completed. originally, the safety concern was extremely rare. recently, the problem has become more consistent. it is a definite safety hazard as it can cause complete loss of control of the large vehicle. *tr
The vehicle shuts off while going down the road with no knowledge of it going to occur. it gets a 5v reference light and has to be put into neutral and restarted or if you able to pull over to shut it off. this has happened 100 plus times since august 2012, several times almost getting rear ended. i have had it at dodge so many times and have put thousands into it and still nothing. *tr
When i'm driving in traffic (approx 30-45 mph) or stopped at a light, my vehicle randomly shuts off. there's no indication this will happen. no lights flash or anything. the truck simply stops. i take it to mechanics and they say they can't identify the problem--but they recognize there's a problem. i'm fearful for the safety of my family in the vehicle and/or anyone we encounter when this happens. it's nearly impossible to steer the vehicle out of traffic, and the steering locks up as well. i've had the cooling system flushed, transmission replaced to no avail. is there a recall on this thing?! there sure should be! i'm sure someone has died by now due to this malfunction. *tr
4x4 locks up when turning end result broke my transfer case. *tr
Vehicle engages and disengages into four wheel drive on its own. will engage while driving at high speeds on freeway, while vehicle is off and when unlocking doors with key fob. stereo changes stations and volume adjusts on its own. have unhooked transfer case to avoid an accident. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact was driving approximately 45 mph, when smoke emitted from the vents, dashboard and from under the hood of the vehicle. in addition, the seat belt sensor alarm sounded and the brake and oil warning lights were illuminated. the dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure, but denied any assistance with repairs to the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and the current mileage was 96,000. the vin was unavailable.
On nov 11, i used my 2005 durango ltd, 5.7 hemi for errands. it is very lightly used. i parked it in my driveway and on nov 17 i went to load it for a trip. i found it filled with an acrid smoke. i air'd it out and began looking for the cause of the smell and smoke. the next morning we found that the main wiring block located in the drivers side kick panel had melted down, very many wires had melted and the cover had melted to the panel and carpet. i called dodge that day, they said they would have the case mgr call me by the next evening. but of course that was actually business days so monday evening they called me to verify my address? i asked if this was the case mgr and she said yes and was calling to verify my address. of course i told her we gave the address on friday and it is the same as when i bought the vehicle and on all of my records. she said she would have an inspector call me. he called on the 23rd and inspected it on saturday 11/26/2011. he took alot of pictures and said would file the report the next week but had no control when dodge would call me back or if dodge would do anything about it. this vehicle is in excellent condition, with low miles and a documented service history. when i first bought it was held at the first dealer i brought it to due to the check valve recall. it is in the gas tank and was malfunctioning and causing gas to fly back out when filling the tank. it has been doing it again lately for about the last month. the inspector said that a recall had been performed on the dash panel which had caused fires. i told him i had no knowledge of ever getting that work done, unless it was before i bought it or they did not tell me of the repair when it was done. he said good i had all of the windows shut or it may have ignited (and burned my house down with us in it). now i have a $35000 6 yr old, great looking boat anchor! *tr
The multi function switch in the steering column fails and causes the wrong turn indicator lights (both on the dash and on the exterior) to activate. for example, when pushing down on the stalk to indicate a left turn the right turn lights are activated. so, if you are in a left turn lane and you try to indicate that you are turning left the right indicator lights will activate and confuse the other drivers and could cause a very dangerous situation. *tr
Driving in my neighborhood at 35 mph and the engine turned off completely! i coasted to a full stop, turned off the ignition...waited 10 seconds and then turned the ignition back on and drove off. vehicle also feels very sluggish especially driving over 55 mph. you must really push the pedal down to accelerate. engine shutting off is soooo dangerous. god for bid this will happen when im driving with my children in the car while on the freeway!!! *tr
2005 durango 4.7 v8 hemi my vehicle randomly shuts down on its own, locking the steering column, when slowing down and turning at the same time as when coasting into a parking space or coming to a stop. also, on some of these occasions, all interior electrical components seem to go out, inst panel, radio, fan/blower, etc. brought in multiple times for inspection, they say they find nothing. in last 6 months, 4wd light blinks as if its changing from awd to 4wd on its own, sometimes can hear it engaging under car when using key fob locking or unlocking, and when turning into a parking spot it feels like it changed to 4lo as its almost skipping/hopping like trying to take a turn with 4wd and rpms go way up like i'm in a low gear. many, many of the same complaints on dodge forums with many people just throwing money at it and having multiple things replaced etc, just to find out its not fixed. needs to be recalled soon. *tr
Ac/heater harness and resistor constantly burning out . then you have not heater, defrost or air conditioner and you can not run down the road in this model with the windows down.
Car shuts off without warning, loosing power steering and braking. *tr
My dodge durango 2005, shuts off periodically while driving. this is extremely dangerous when i have to drive this crap with my kids in it. dodge is aware of this problem and just wants to brush everyone off. saying they found no evidence of a problem, well we all cant be wrong. i will tell everyone i know not to ever buy a dodge. at least fix this problem dodge, because right now your reputation is really bad. i am surprised dodge doesn't have a lawsuit yet. this problem will kill someone. *tr
Durango shuts off randomly, especially when turning at slow speeds. *tr
