Recently reported ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING problems on 2004 Dodge Durango

Exhaust manifold bolts broke off. *tr

In june i had an incident where my engine stalled while i was driving on a side street and at that same time the check engine light had been coming on and off. i brought it to the dealer, but of course the light was not on. they hooked it up to the computer and found no problems. i have been driving it and the light has come on and off over these few months. while driving i have noticed over the past month or two that on occasion, when i am driving anywhere below 50 mph, the rpm needle would drop. sometimes it was a small drop but you could still feel the loss of speed. at other times it was a significant drop and you would feel the car jerk as it resolved itself. on 3 occasions the engine did stall completely like in june. last night it become more problematic. it cont to do the above but very frequently and now if i stop at a light or to make a turn, when i push the peddle the car goes very slowly and the only way to get it to not stall is to give it more gas and this makes the car sprint forward. i had to turn into traffic and almost had an accident because of this. this is very dangerous in my opinion and it looks like many others are having similar issues. i agree with some of the others that there should be a recall. it's just a matter of time before someone gets hurt. *tr

Dodge 2004 durango stalled while taking a right turn onto side street. unable to finish turn or got off the road. i was panicked, found flashers to turn on, then instructed to by helpful passerby to turn key off, and restart car. this worked, hasn't happened again. i take this very serious, my young, new drivers, children are able to drive this vehicle and wouldn't know what to do if this happened to them. i want this taken care of at dodges expense. mary west. *tr

I am having problems with my 2004 dodge durango. my engine light and throttle light comes on and the engine light stays on and the throttle light blinks. this happened last year in july and it is happening again this year. i bought my auto to the dealer and due to the fact that the light was not on at that time, they couldn't do anything. they just cleaned out the throttle plates and i was fine until now. my auto stopped on the main road while i was stopped at a red light. i had my 2 children under 4 years old with me and very scared. noone can find the problem. has there been a recall on my auto in regards to this? *tr

My wife was driving alone to work. suddenly and without warning, the engine stopped, lights went off and power steering went off. she managed to use the car momentum to direct the car into a side road, without hitting any other cars. she was 30 secs. from the freeway entrance). she managed to get out of the car ( all other doors to the car were locked except the driver door - what do you do when you are in the back seat ?)) and noticed blue smoke coming from under the hood. she tried to restart the vehicle but without success. she called aaa and was eventually towed to stateline dodge in fort mill. the battery and connections were so hot the tow truck driver could not touch them..and still smoking. the garage examined the battery cables and verified they were melted together(see invoice). we would need a new battery and cable. i called the garage to inform them that a nhtsa safety recall d40 was issued in 2004, concerning re-routing the battery cable as it could lead to an underhood fire. i was expecting not to be charged with the battery and replacement cable. however the recall notice talks about cable contact with the upper control arm of the suspension and in my case the contact was with the exhaust gas recycle tube, which is 1" away from the control arm. i was charged $460 for the work and am now writing to chrysler for recompense. this is a potential serious issue for durango owners, especially if you are on a freeway and the engine cuts out or your car is parked in your garage at night and the battery is red hot. this safety recall campaign should be extended to cables contacting the egr tube. *tr

The vehicle randomly stalls. it has done this several times since i have owned it. i have taken it to the dealer several times. they told me they couldn't replicate and diagnose the problem then one time they said they did provide a fix. the time immediately before the fix i was making a left hand turn into oncoming traffic and the car stalled. had we been hit by the oncoming vehicle the impact would have been a t-bone into my young daughter's side of the car. the most recent time this happened was yesterday. i was driving approx. 35 miles per hour and i could feel the car as if i had let my foot off the gas when i had not. i went to make a right hand turn and the car died. i was not able to steer and came very close to hitting another car. i will note the most recent date of this incident. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. while making a turn at less than 15 mph, the vehicle stalled and the steering became locked. on a separate occasion, while idling at a stop sign, the steering locked and failed completely. in addition, the oil warning indicator was illuminated on the instrument panel. the manufacturer advised him to take the vehicle to the dealer for a diagnostic. the dealer was unable to produce an error code because the check engine warning indicator was not illuminated. the dealer cleaned the carburetor in an attempt to correct the failures. the current and failure mileages were less than 51,000.

I have had numerous engine stalling/loss of steering problems with my vehicle once the mileage exceeded 70,000 miles. it has stalled while stopping at a stop sign, upon accelerating into a turn, and many others. after diagnostic testing, we replaced 2 o2 sensors and the stalling still occurs. after a second diagnostic testing, we replaced all the spark plugs and ignition coils and the stalling still occurs. after a third diagnostic testing, we replaced the fuel pump and the stalling still occurs. now the diagnostic testing indicated we need to replace the egr flow sensor. i currently have 74,836 miles. i have spent approx $1000 in parts alone to repair these items and the problem is still not fixed. *tr

While sitting at a red light the vehicle stalled. i put it in park and it started right up. there was no sign of running rough before the stall, it just was idling and cut out. a week later on the highway at approx. 60 mph the vehicle bucked like it wanted to stall but didn't. it did this three times in less than a minute. i accelerated and it seemed to help. *tr

I have a 2004 dodge durango with 73,600 miles. for the last couple of months it's been acting up. the second i slow to a stop or put it in park, the rpms start jumping around. it has stalled on me several times. when i accelerate the rpms spike and it doesn't seem to want to go, but jerks like it is going to stall and then takes off. it's kind of scary. i've taken it to several shops, but they can't find why it is doing this. i took it to auto zone today and had it hooked up to their diagnostic machine. they said that it isn't coding anything to be wrong. when i googled the problem, i was amazed to see how many people are having the same problem. i'm wondering if dodge has looked into this and why there isn't a recall ??? *tr

There was almost a multi car crash!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the car quit in the middle of driving into an intersection through oncoming traffic. i'm told by dealer the engine failed and needs to be replaced. the oil has been changed, and the car has been maintained. yet the engine failed and needs to be replaced!! many similar complaints are on www.carcomplaints.com several of the people were dodge fans, and one used to buy autos at auction. this is not a maintenance issue. this is a defective auto, with real safety concerns. this car is only 4 years old!! evidently there is a class action lawsuit about this engine type for failure. in heavy traffic, this is very serious. in south florida nobody can afford to be driving and then have their vehicle suddenly fail and lose power!! this is extremely dangerous! *tr

I own a 2004 dodge durango. i was driving about 40 mph and it just stalled. i waited a few minutes and it started back and drove just fine. i took it to the dealership and they stated that it is a problem. they advised me to drive it and if it does it again, to bring it back. however, after doing research on the net i found that this model has the tendency to stall. i'm shocked that dodge did not have an answer for me. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer for a routine oil change. several days later, she took the vehicle to another dealer and was informed that both of the bolts in the exhaust manifold failed. the repair would cost $1,100. the vehicle has not been repaired. the manufacturer would not assist. the failure and current mileages were 63,732. updated 09/15/08 *bf the bolts on the manifold had broken off. updated 09/18/08. *jb

Vehicle is bucking during easy cruising. while pulling up to stop or stopping, the engine is shutting off. it is not idling smoothly. vehicle has been to two garages, and two different dodge dealers and no one can figure out the problem or how to fix it. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. while driving at an unknown speed, the low oil warning light illuminated. the contact pulled into the nearest service station to check the oil. she added one quart of oil as indicated by the oil dip stick. she resumed driving and after approximately five miles, the engine began knocking. she pulled to the side of the road and called a tow truck to have the vehicle towed back to north carolina. once in north carolina, the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who stated that a new engine was needed. the failure and current mileages were 148,000.

I was approaching a red light and was slowing to a stop. as i slowed down to maybe 10 miles an hour, the vehicle stalled or shut off. i had no power steering or anything. managed to put the vehicle in park and it restarted. never done it since, but i have recently learned of many others who have had this problem with their 2004 dodge durango. thanks *tr

Veh problem on 1/1/08 -- 2004 dodge durango http://www.datatown.com/chrysler/ 1/3/08: called chrysler dealer ' 1-800-992-1997 spoke to amy (ref 17081406 (id#aj267) she requested the vehicle id no ' the last eight ' i gave her ' she ask what our address was and telephone number ' i gave it to her. she asked if i contacted the shop where i get it serviced at ' i said, no i was contacting you first. i told her i wanted to see if this was covered under the 7 year/70,000 mile warranty ' she said, i did not have that ' i said yes i did that's what made us buy the vehicle. she said to contact the place where we bought it from ' in roxborogh - she said, what problem are you having. i told her that the problem started when i got the recall fixed for instrument cluster. we had wiring harness to the 8 cyclinder. then the oil light came on. but i did not need any oil ' i get my oil done regularly. three days later the dodge started revving very high like someone is pushing on the pedal. the car jerks and the engine light is on now. she put me on hold to check the warranty information. spoke to leslie, supervisor. she told me there is nothing they could do for me ' what you do out side of chrysler is your problem. i told her there is all sorts of notes on line from people having problems with engines and transmissions. she said, there was no recalls on this.*cn

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. when slowing down from 30 mph to make a turn or attempting to accelerate afterwards, the vehicle stalls. the dealer stated that the computer acceleration and idle chip needed to be reprogrammed. the vehicle was taken several times to have the idle and acceleration chip reprogrammed and the failure was not permanently corrected. the vehicle will be taken again for a new diagnosis. the manufacturer was notified and issued a reference number. the current mileage was 50,161 and failure mileage was 10,000. updated 3/4/08 *cn

After loading our boat at a reservoir and prepping the boat on the trailer, i started the durango to leave the lake, and the engine was knocking. a guy from the marina came by and said "it's knocking isn't it, that is the third dodge this summer. after having it towed to the nearest dealer and waiting a week for a diagnosis i was told that there is an evacuation canister mounted on the frame rail about mid-vehicle. if the vent to this canister gets in the water it will suck water into the intake of the engine. the engine had hydro-locked and was destroyed. i was told that even though we only had 37,000 miles on the vehicle, chrysler would not warranty this because it was considered submerged.6 weeks and $7000.00 in repairs and rental car fees, we have finally gotten our vehicle back. i was told by the mechanic that getting in water up to the hubs of the rear wheels, i would be at risk of this happening again. i am not sure that it was even in that deep when it happened the first time. i am going to get rid of this vehicle immediately. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. while approaching a stop at 10 mph, the vehicle stalled and the steering failed. the instrument panel lights illuminated and the radio remained activated. the contact placed the vehicle in park, shut off the engine, and restarted the vehicle in order for it to operate normally. she took the vehicle to a mechanic and had a diagnostic performed, but no failures were found. the failure mileage was 36,100 and current mileage was 37,000.

I purchased a 2004 durango in nov of 2006. i had no real problems with vehicle until recently. took vehicle in to dealership for recall of instrument panel. dealership took care of this and 2 weeks later temperature gauge started reading hotter then usual. contacted dealership who then stated unrelated. recently went on vacation and 300 miles from home vehicle temp gauge read hot. pulled off interstate to nearest service station. no dealership near here. mechanic found no codes to indicate problem. replaced water pump, thermostat, hoses, check radiator, new fluids, bill total 377 dollars. 3 miles later car still trying to over heat. towed to va for 1,000 dollars now at dealership. car also seems to sometimes not be in gear when placed in drive and you try to accelerate engine just revs. at dealership now we shall see what they say. *tr

We were traveling up an incline and reached it's peak at about 40mph. it was at this time that the vehicle stalled and lost power. no power steering and hardly any breaking power. we were able to pull the car over onto a side road. we put the car into park and it restarted immediately. very dangerous as i was carrying my young daughter with me. this was the second time this has happened. the first time i shrugged it off but the second time was scary hence this complaint. after doing some research, i found that this is a pretty common occurrence and is under investigation by the nhtsa: ea05018. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. while driving approximately 40 mph in dry conditions, the vehicle lost power and stalled. the contact pulled off the road. she was able to restart the vehicle and drive to her residence. the vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where it is currently located. the dealer has been unable to determine the cause of failure. there is an open defect investigation (ea05018) for this failure. the current and failure mileages were 36,429. updated 09/05/07. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. on july 2, 2007, the contact stated that the engine shut off when driving at high speeds or when in the idle position. she had new equipment for the engine replaced. she stated that this is the fifth time that this failure has occurred. the current and failure mileages were 47,100.

My dodge durango 2004 has been in the shop (dealer) for over a month due to over heating. over the course of this time, the thermostat, relays, water pump, and fan clutch were changed. the radiator flushed. the dealer now believes its the head. the check engine light has gone on. worst yet, the car has stalled on me twice during heavy traffic while trying to turn at a low speed. this worries me since i could have gotten in an accident each time. i want the car out of the shop but i am afraid to drive it. i no longer feel confident to go anywhere particularly long distances with it.

I recently noticed that the suv was made a loud ticking sound at startup, getting a little softer as the motor heated up. returning the vehicle to the purchased dealership, which was inspected for a fee, and found the cause to be the aluminum screws on the left side of the manifold which broke, causing the loud exhaust. i then paid $225.00 to have the two screws drilled out of the engine, and had the screws replaced along with a manifold gasket. *ak

Mutilple experiences of engine stalling. often occurs while stopping but has occurred while under way. *tr

2/15/07 while driving the engine just shut off. 3/12/07 truck was running fine. drove approx. 2 miles and it would not re-start. engine would fire, then stall. after 5 attempts it started continued to run fine. *jb

On march 2, 2007 i got in my 2004 dodge durango limited (hemi) to take my kids to school, i noticed my radio had no sound, the power came on, but no sound at all was heard. after i drove about 1/2 of a mile the speedometer and tachometer gauges started acting erratic, jumping up and down, the radio came back on for a few seconds, then cut out again. the overhead temp control was jumping from 54 degrees to negative 40!. my airbag light came on and stayed on as well as the etc light. after dropping my kids at school, i have not drove this truck, with less than 41000 miles. after reading that fires have started in many other 2004 durango's, i would like to know why my truck has not been issued a recall, what are they waiting for? i can not put my kids in this truck. in october 2006 my truck was leaking from above my drivers side door (34713 miles), we took it to the dealer and they had to re-seal seams above my door as well as other possible areas water could be getting in, one week later my truck started stalling at stop signs, my husband took it do the dealer again (35050 miles) the dealer schaefer and strohminger dodge whitemarsh of course tells us that it is lack of maintenance (not true) and we need the throttle body cleaned ($169.00 and a tune up $182.00) yet just the week before when my truck was there they did the multi-point inspection report and checked that everything was fine. after doing research i found out the issue with the leak above my door was sent out as a customer satisfaction notification no. d10, dated march 2004, why didn't i get this notification? better yet, why didn't the dealer fix this before i bought it in sept. 04? what good is the warranty from them when everything is denied? i will never buy a dodge/chrysler vehicle again. i have had many vehicles and never had an issue with a dealer not honoring a warranty and fixing problems, this is ridiculous and unsafe. *jb

Without warning, my vehicle has stalled during slow down. this has happened twice in the last two years. the vehicle is a 2004 dodge durango limited with the 5.7l hemi engine. after first incident, dealer says that nothing could be found. second incident occurred this past week. will try a new dealership. *jb

My 2004 dodge durango which i purchased new, has stalled several times without any warning /lights coming on etc. this has happened at low speeds and i was able to restart the vehicle. i have not reported to the dealer yet as it has just started happening and i checked nhtsa website for recalls/complaints to research first. apparently i am not the only one with this issue. vehicle only has 37000 miles on it. this could be a safety issue! *jb

My 2004 slt dodge durango was serviced for a routine oil change @42000 miles and the dealership did a routine point check evaluation. on feb. 10, 2007 @ 10:45 am while stopping at a traffic light, the vehicle began to lose speed before coming to a complete stop, the engine stopped responding & the panel lights started blinking on & off, then a burning smell started & smoke started to come out of the drivers panel and i exited the vehicle before physical harm could be done to me. i called 911 and they had the fire department to respond. my vehicle was completely engulfed with flames before they arrived. the entire interior of the vehicle was burned beyond recognition. it was extremely unnerving to be a part of this,i had not had any problems out of my vehicle before this horrible incident. it is just unthinkable to realize that i have been driving my two kids in my durango every day for the past 2 years and thanks to the lord above that they were at home on this morning, while i went to pick up the girl scout cookie orders for my daughter, which were in the back of the durango when it went up in smoke. this incident will financial impact my family greatly. the car is now a total loss. *jb

Noise/low vibration at 70 mph. made complaint at service interval. could not be duplicated. next time i took it in 1500 miles over warranty they mange to duplicate. it will cost 500.00 and they think it will fix it. replace all hangers and tail pipe. next all plastic on front seat cracked again no plan until after warranty miles. *jb

04 dodge durango hemi bought used on 1-1-07. 2 weeks ago, first stall problem. 4 times more after that. all stalled same way, after complete stop, idle fluctuates and stalls. sometimes its fine.

Engine stalls without warning. *nm

We recently purchased a used 2004 dodge durango limited. equipped with the 5.7l hemi. we have owned the suv for just under 90 days and on three separate occasions the engine has stalled when my wife was backing out of our driveway and shifting into drive. i spoke with a dodge dealership on the phone a few days ago and they offered little help. i intend to call them in the morning and set up an appointment to have them look at it. this is the vehicle my wife uses to transport our two young boys to pre-school and herself to work. this is very concerning to us because the truck dying in the driveway is one thing, but what if the next time they are on the highway or in the middle of an intersection. *jb

2004 hemi durango, driving down freeway and vehicle shuts off. placed vehicle in neutral and recovered. coasted to a stop in breakdown lane. placed vehicle in park and re started vehicle. it took 2 attempts to re start it was almost like the engine had loaded up. it then re started fine after the 2nd attempt. this has happened on several occasions during driving but only once at fwy speed. *nm

2004 dodge durango. while turning into a parking space engine shut itself off. vehicle was restarted and pulled safely into parking space. i contacted cerritos dodge and spoke with bob in the service department and he told me that there were no recalls for my vehicle. i am concerned that this will happen again and i may be in an accident. *nm

Engine died as we were exiting the freeway after driving about 40 miles. had it towed to dealership. were told the engine failed because of sludge build-up from failure to change oil often enough. $6000 to replace with a remanufactured engine. new engine would have been $8, 000. we did not have receipts of the oil changes performed, and so we had to pay for engine replacement. have since heard of many others who had the same experience.*ak

Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning. it was maneuvered off the road and restarted. this occurred on two separate occasions and both times, the vehicle was driven to the dealer who could not duplicate the problem.

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. while driving 50 mph, the steering wheel locked and the vehicle shut off without warning. the contact parked and restarted the vehicle. the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. presently, no other failures have occurred. the current mileage is 42,000 and failure mileage was 39,000.

My truck has stalled several times, and at one point would not even start, the dealer said it is a dirty throttle body causing this, but i do not think they even really looked into it, especially after reading other complaints about the same problrm! *nm

2004 durango. v6 3.7 l engine. after sitting over night vehicle is hard to start as if it is out of gas. turns over for a very long time before starting. when accelerating from a stop vehicle stalls, or sputters or hesitates everytime. makes a slight ping noise when engine eventually takes off. took to dealership they suggested change plugs i did that. said i used wrong kind changed to there brand. still no difference. they cleaned throttle body and injector still no change. new dealer still no idea vehicle has been in shop 7 days now. dodge no help what so ever. dealership rude unhelpful and dented my hood trying to close. afraid problem will get worse or cause an accident for my wife. *nm

Finally got truck back from body shop (9 weeks) and service after a total of $13219 in damage. all caused by this stalling problem on 2004 dodge durango limited with a hemi. still after the accident they are not able to tell me why this happened. the typical answer is "sorry but we cannot duplicate this problem and no codes are coming up". so to make a long story short, it has happened again !!! i have not even had the truck back for 1 month !!! got in the truck on saturday around 10:00 am (5/20) with my wife and 2 children after a haircut. started the truck, put it reverse and nothing. it stalled !?!?! tried twice more and the same thing happened. finally the truck stayed started on the forth try. started down the road doing about 30-35 mph, coming up to a traffic light and the truck stalled. imagine that !!! stopped and put in park and started right back up. got back to our house and called dealer. he said bring it up. got a call today (monday 5/22) from dealer and you will never guess the answer i got. your right !!! " sorry but we cannot duplicate this problem and no codes are coming up". not sure what to do at this point. we are scared of this vehicle and we are afraid to drive it. no one seems to care. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 40 mph or less the engine stalled and lost power without warning. afterwards, the vehicle was easily restarted. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for inspection. the dealer performed a diagnostic test that produced no failures codes. the service department was unable to duplicate the problem. the contact claimed that vehicle shut off/stalled off 8 times in 16 months, and has been at dealership 4 times and nothing has been replaced or repaired, and it continued to shut off while coming to a stop. this was a safety problem. *ak

While driving on i-91 south in ma (in the evening, with two of my kids ages 5 & 7) in my 2004 dodge durango suv the engine suddenly and unexpectedly cut out - turned off. the vehicle lost power steering and power brakes. the dashboard lights went dark. the headlights remained on and the radio continued to function. the car was in drive and the ignition key was in the proper position - this was not caused the my having inadvertently put the car in neutral or park, etc or by the car having been inadvertently turned off. this was a sudden engine shut down while traveling at highway speeds on an interstate. fortunately, i was able to put the flashers on (they worked) and coast over to the shoulder and stop the vehicle. i shifted the transmission from drive to park. i turned the key to the off position. i checked the headlights -- they went on and off. i checked the radio it went on and off. i waited a moment to collect my thoughts. then, i turned the key and the car started right up no problem. i let the engine idle for a moment and checked for any engine warning lights - there were none. i put the vehicle in drive and proceeded on the shoulder for a short distance to see if the car would go. it did. i was able to enter back on to the interstate and resume by trip. the vehicle functioned perfectly normally for the remainder of the trip. i vehicle has also continued to function properly since then without incident. this engine cut out problem had never happened before. i am concerned, however, that the problem could recur at any time without notice. while fortunately this time that an accident did not occur and no one was injured, it is entirely possible that given a different situation and this same problem happened there could easily be an accident resulting in death and/or serious bodily injury, as well as property damage. a mechanic look at the vehicle and didn't find anything wrong. *jb

The vehicle has stalled on several occasions, while driving and while stopped. on two occasions the vehicle failed to restart for an hour or so. when the engine stalls the power components associated with the safe operation of the vehicle also are effected (ie steering, brakes, etc.). this has led to a couple of near collisions on the freeway and surface streets. this is a problem that needs to be addressed. i have voiced my concerns to other owners that are having the same issues even after tsb items have been performed. the transmission also fails to engage when shifting from park into drive or reverse gears. *jb

I lease a 2004 dodge durango limited w/ a 5.7 hemi. this vehicle stalled on slick road doing approx, 35-40 mph. i tried to stop vehicle and lost control. went off road into ditch and rolled vehicle. all passengers in vehicle (4) were all uninjured. this vehicle has done this since it had 1803 miles on it. this truck has had multiple problems and has been a nightmare. this vehicle is unsafe as i have said since first episode of stalling. now this truck has approx, 21000 miles on it and this problem recurred. we are scared to drive truck. manu, says not to worry" if this happens, airbags will still deploy." are you serious !! enough is enough! lets get together and make this problem known. at this point i am ready for action to be taken and all the consumers that have this problem need to unite and settle this once and for all. next time there may be a death. it may be your child. we need to stop this people !!! *nm

Bought 2004 3.7l dodge durango jan 2004 .within year, check engine light came on. took it to arrigo dodge, wpbch, florida. left it for a few days, called to say it was ready. reason for failure - bad sensor. drove home, light back on.took it to arrigo. they kept it for a week. they explained that the harness (electrical) had a short, so they replaced it.got it back with the light on. they took it back into the shop for about 5 minutes then the service advisor took it back to say they just turned off the warning light. within a month my mechanic told me that there is a vibration in the motor. by the begining of 2006, the vibration got worse. eventually the vehicle broke down. by this time, my 75000 mile powertrane warranty had run out. my mechanic told me that there was sludge stuck in the oil pump screen and as such the oil was not circulating like it should.the night before i was supposed to take it to the dealership for diagnosis, i parked it in my neighbors driveway. woke up early, went to the truck opened the driverside door and immediately smelled / saw smoke coming from under instrument panel. all the warning and ignition lights were on and speedometer was cycling between zero and 10 mph. . i disconnected the battery, which stopped the burning. took it to dealership where they discovered that the module in the instrument cluster was burnt, and for the original problem , they found that the motor was ruined. as a result of all this i had to pay $800+ to fix the instrument cluster problem and my mechanic found a motor to replace mine at an additional $2500. i'm convinced the warning light was indication that something was wrong with the engine and had they not turned off the warning light, i would have paid enough attention to the vehicle to not wind up with a ruined engine. dealer told me that there was recall for a capacitor in the instrument cluster but the recall was done on my vehicle before i bought it. thus i had to pay for the repair out of pocket. *nm

Once engine was turned on the vehicle began to idle rough. while driving at the speed of 20 mph vehicle idle became worse and driving the vehicle was unstable. vehicle was immediately delivered to the dealership for service. *jb
