We have classified the 155 complaints from 2004 Dodge Durango about ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING into the following categories.
I have a 2004 dodge durango slt 5.7l hemi. never had any big issues with it until in 2014 i was driving home from work on the highway when i heard a loud bang and loud knocking noises followed shortly by an abrupt shut off. i tried immediately to get to the side of the road but when i lost power steering from the engine ceizing and couldn't correct myself enough so i went down the hill off the side of the highway while trying to break with no brake booster anymore as well. i ended up running into a couple small tree's and finally stopping . air bags didn't deploy and i only jammed my finger and hurt my back some but i only missed a larger group of tree by inches. my front bumper was ripped off, my drivers side headlight was broke as well as my grille and my windshield cracked. i took it to my mechanic and found out that the engine "hydrolocked" and a piston rod punched through my engine and broke a lot of other things internally. needless to say the engine is gone. after doing some research i have found that there are hundreds more people that had this happen to their 04 and 05 dodge durango with the 5.7l hemi. apparently the water runs right down onto the engine and pools up and the intake is faulty so it sucks that water up and causes a catastrophic hydrolock with the engine which could kill someone if they lose power steering and power brakes within a second. i've been trying to save to get a new engine (which will cost about $3800 alone) because i bought this for too much and neither dodge or my insurance would cover it so it's now a pile of scrap until i hopefully can get a new engine or have dodge buy this death trap back. dodge needs to buy these back or fix them! this is by far not an individual case and it is very dangerous and costly!
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled when driving through a car wash and rainy conditions. prior to stalling, the vehicle would shake violently. the cowl screen was repaired by the dealer, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer who discovered that the injector o-ring, plug wires, and gaskets around the intake manifold needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 140,000.
I am also adding to the rapidly growing number of complaints with the same issue that my 2004 dodge durango slt 5.7 hemi has with the blown engine. as majority on this site have expressed, my durango was well taken care of with maintenance performed at regular intervals. i bought my durango used in 2007 with 1 owner prior to myself. i have experienced the recall for the electrical panel, along with the egr valve 2 years back and engine stalling in the rain. the first time my engine idled poorly while in the rain was around 2008. as many others have stated in their formal complaints, i drove home from work with no problem. as i returned to my truck 15min later i went to start the ignition and the engine knocked and shut down. i attempted to start the ignition again, and once again the engine knocked, shaked and had shut down once more. after the 3rd time starting the ignition, i got no response just a click. i let my truck sit for a day and had it towed to a private mechanic. after checking my fuel pump, started, battery, and alternator, my mechanic figured the root of my problem had been my engine had blown. afterwards, i researched the issue with engines in this particular models durange. after doing extensive research and viewing this website, to my surprise i found i wasn't the only owner of this model & year truck having this very same issue. what makes this more surprising is the growing number of complaints about this very issue and nothing is being done. as a single parent of 2 children i rely heavily on my vehicle, that it why i take all necessary steps to ensure my vehicle remains in good running condition. this incident has caused me alot of emotional and financial strain. and i would hope that very soon the company would recognize that this is a major problem that needs to be rectified.
While driving my 2004 dodge durango 5.7 hemi the svc 4x4 light went on at the time i was driving 35mpg in 70 degree weather and did not have my 4x4 on. i took it the mechanic shop and they said i needed to replace the 4x4 shift motor, so i bought a new 4x4 shift motor and they replaced it but my 4x4 was still not working. i have taken it to two different mechanic shops and they keep saying its the 4x4 shift motor so i exchanged the new 4x4 shift motor thinking it was defected and once again bought a new one and had it replaced and at this point the mechanics don't know what else it could be because it still didn't work. *tr
2004 dodge durango. consumer writes in regards to a defective engine. *smd the consumer stated the vehicle shook vigorously and the noise grew louder. the dealer advised the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle also had a continuous oil leak. *js
my husband and i were driving to the store after work on april 24th. we stopped for a stop sign, slowly took off and heard a bang! we had to have the 2004 dodge durango towed to a mechanic and found that the rods were bent in the engine...particularly the #7 rod. not one single warning, no check engine light, nothing!! we kept the oil changed according to schedule! the truck is in excellent condition too; top of the line vehicle with dvd player and everything! now we're facing a $4-6,000 replacement bill. why would we replace it with an engine that is going to do the exact same thing in a few years because of poor quality?! we are done with dodge products and we're going to tell everyone we know what has happened to us. *js
Truck driving just fine on april 15th. april 16th it rained and on the 17th my engine failed. i did not go anywhere on april 16th due to the rain, but when i attempted to start my vehicle on the 17th, at first it wouldn't start but when it did the durango sounded like boulders were in my engine and the truck was idling up and down on its own and shaking violently. my 3yr old and 18 month old were in the back seat scared to pieces. this is a shame! i have read hundreds of complaints against the 2004 dodge durangos and i'm just disgusted. i've only had my truck for 2 months and it is still under a 3 month 4500 mile extended warranty, but the warranty, (i'm just finding out) only covers $1,250 in repairs. as a newly separated single mother this is unacceptable and i'm furious! something has to be done. *tr
My wife was driving the durango home and it began to knock loudly. brought the vehicle home for inspection. the valve train is fine, but the bottom end has 2 bent connection rods. these rods just randomly bent. the heads are fine, there is not water leaking, gaskets are fine. this seems to be a problem with the quality of materials of the rods. *js
Bought our durango new in 2004,with the 5.7 hemi, serviced it every 3000 miles. my wife drives it and had no problems until the other day when she got in to go to work and started it up, and it sounded like you had thrown gravel in a washing machine. im sure it drop a valve seat and chewed it up. i have 27 years in automotive and i know you should get more than 80,000 mile out of a high tech engine like this is supposed to be.we have dodges in our family and this is a very big dissapointment besides being very expensive. dodge is being very closed mouth about this very huge problem.
The odometer just turn 70,000 and the engine block has a hole of 3", two mechanics checked for me and both diagnosis same, that the piston and rod made hone on the block. searching thru a car dealer on internet i found out that there is probably around 100 people that had posted all of them durango 04 hemi 5.7 just like mine with around the same mileage with the exact same problem. now i have to pay a whole motor. there should be a recall to see how many people come forward. *tr
Just like numerous 2004 durango owners i have experienced .......a complete engine failure once i passed 80,000 miles due to unknown causes. i am the original owner, regularly maintained it, and operated it normally. car stalled in traffic and could have been tragic. would like an investigation opened considering the large number of owners experiencing the same problem. *tr
I own a 2004 5.7l hemi magnum dodge durango..when i was leaving school the other night my durango started fine. when i pulled out onto the road i only got about 1/2 mile before my engine made a horrible noise and jerked real hard, my check engine light came on as did my oil light. as i was pulling off the road i lost the power steering as well, smoke poured out from under my durango. i got out as i was afraid it was going to catch fire. i called for help and waited on the side of the road. the tow truck guy got there and told me there was oil all underneath of my truck. i had it towed to my local shop to see what was wrong. guess what? a rod has been pushed through my engine and now i need a new one. my durango only has 85,200 miles on it. i am really mad, i have a daughter who could have been with me and we could have been on the interstate when this happened, i hate to think that was possible and what the outcome could have been. this is a serious issue and i am surprised no recall has been made.we as consumers have the right to a vehicle that is safe for us, the law is supposed to prevent this from re-occuring. i can se if this was an isolated incident, but its not. i have started looking and i see thousands of complaints and that is only on a couple boards/forums, how is this possible, who is responsible. i encourge all durango owners who have had this issue to step forward and complain, together we can make a difference. i already contacted my local news, and i will be sending letters to reid bigland (the president of chrysler corp). chrysler/dodge got a bailout when they were ready to be bankrupt, but where does that help the average consumer. we are all having difficult times in this economy, where is the help for us? we are left to pay well over 6000 for engine repairs that dodge/chrysler corp is responsible for. we all need justice here. *tr
Started to warm up in morning, something broke under the hood. turns out a connecting rod broke and need a new engine. fantastic. has been sitting at the shop and still is there while i take a cab to work every day. will never buy chrysler again and have told everyone i know. what a joke! *tr
Noticed over the past few years water when it rains that it is accumulating on top of the engine. noticed the engine felt like it had a miss fire on a cylinder. seal from windshield cowl is no longer making a positive seal and water is dripping down onto the top of the engine and also into the spark plugs. using you tube there have been numerous complaints of this issue which in turn has resulted in what is called hyro-loc of the engine which is causing push rods to break and causing the engine to completely fail, as in my case pushing a rod thru the block of the engine spilling oil out on to the street. shutting down the engine loosing all power to steer and control vehicle. luckily i was not on a main highway traveling at 60mph as this could have been as disastrous accident.there should be some type of recall on the water problem and this engine catastrophe resulting form this problem, as of today dodge/chrysler has no known issue of this sort, which is hard to believe. please notify me of any information regarding these issues and any possible class action suits that may be pending. *tr
Went to start my truck in the morning to warm up, sounded like something broke under the hood. shut off, waited and restarted, same noise. it is sitting at a repair shop because its going to be expensive and i don't have the money. i still have years to pay on it. been taking a cab to work and back every day. i bought my 2004 durango brand new, never beat it up, has only 74k miles, regular oil changes. i have read other incidents/complaints online about the same thing i am going through. its pretty sad to drive by my truck every day in a cab! *tr
While driving down the highway the engine completely seized. no indication or warning. always maintained iaw the manual. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. the contact stated that while driving 5 mph, there was an abnormal knocking from the engine area. the contact had the vehicle towed to a nearby mechanic where the mechanic diagnosed that a rod had punctured the motor.the dealer was contacted and did not acknowledge the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and the current mileage was 107,000. the vin was not available.
After returning home from a long distance 4 day weekend, where the vehicle for the most part ran fine. it stalled a couple of times while decelerating (which had happened a few times prior and our local mechanic couldn't locate the problem). there were no warning lights on and the vehicle ran fine. the next day after driving about 6 miles to work (again with no incident), i started the vehicle and drove about 100 yards and it sounded like rocks and rubber were flying all over under the hood (heavy knocking sound). had it towed to the garage and have been told the oil has turned to sludge and that the motor threw a rod. the repair quote includes putting in a new motor and the cost is $4,000 - $5,000. we do not have the funds and still owe almost $8,000 on the vehicle. this is a crime! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. while driving approximately 35 mph, the contact heard a loud clicking noise outside of the vehicle. the contact maneuvered to the side of the road and stopped. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who stated that there was a hole in the engine block due to a rod fracture. the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 119,000.
I have the same problem as many other dodge durango owners are experiencing. mine is a 2004 dodge durango with a 5.7 hemi engine. it was always properly maintained and serviced. one morning we went to turn it on and a loud knocking sound came out of the engine. it was a broken rod. without any symptoms or any warnings whatsoever, a rod decided to break. incredible to think that a well maintained engine would break for no reason with less than 100k miles on it. *tt
Car stalled for no reason. lucky this happen in a parking lot at 10mph as all the controls went out. stopped the car turned it off and it started right back up with no issue. this has happened again 4 more times all at low speed. i have called the dodge dealer and they told me there was nothing they could do for me as my vehicle is out of warranty even if the nhtsa had opened an investigation on this issue a long time ago. it is nice to see how dodge stands behind their products and after reading the nhtsa website it looks like i am in store for many more issues that dodge will not help with. this is a safety issue and i do not understand how dodge is able to get away with this. i wanted to pass this vehicle onto my daughter so she would be a proud dodge owner so much for that. why keep the service at the dealership up to date when in the end there is no added value to paying more for servicing your vehicle at the dealership. *tr
I've owned my 2004 dodge durango 5.7 hemi since 2005. with only 151,960 miles - taking excellent care and pride in it, the #7 rod has been bent. water has somehow gotten into my motor causing all kinds of issues. within the past year, it has had issues running hot, running poorly when it rains and rough idle on occasion. after sitting for 24 hours, i went out to crank it and it jumped (i thought a small animal had crawled into my motor) and it shut off. i then re-cranked it and it sounds like a sewing machine. i had to have it towed and am now looking at $4000 for another motor. i've have researched the internet and am totally blown away at the others having the issues with the same exact make and model of vehicle. this is something chrysler should make right. i am a single mother and live week to week, i can not afford to do this, but i have to. working full time, caring for a 10 year old and now applying for a part-time job is what this extra expense is causing me to do. i think someone should do something - if i win the lottery, you best believe i will. chrysler do the right thing....this is happening too much and is a defect - no doubt. toyota did a recall - maybe if i'm ever to buy another vehicle, atleast they would make it right. *kicks soapbox*. *tr
We purchased our car new in may 04. we have had no major issues with the vehicle. last week i got in the car and tried to start it and it made this loud noise like rocks or marbles in the engine. then it would not turn over. after a few attempts to start, the engine started but has a very loud knocking noise. the car ran fine 2 days before the failure. we had it towed to a dodge dealership and they said the camshaft and pistons need to be replaced. but haven't really torn the engine apart to diagnose everything. total cost to rebuild the bottom half only is $5,000.00. the service guy told me it was one of the cleanest engines he has seen too. i told them that was too much and they went down to $4,100.00. but we found another licensed shop to rebuild for less. the shop doing the work has 3 other durangos at his shop with the same problem. this engine should have lasted a lot longer than 90,900 miles. i checked edmunds.com and lots of people have complained about this same issue. the dealership said that they sold over a million and a half of these vehicles and this is a fluke that it happened to a few of them. *tr
Started car in the morning and a loud knocking started. *tr
Slowing for a stop sign at about 15 mph rod broke and went through block. complete engine failure. at 120,000 miles this is ridiculous. no noise or any warning , always changed oil. daughter has honda with 200k on it and still runs great. what is with chrysler?? remember the old fiat== fix it again [xxx]?? if dodge thinks they will sell me another car i don't think so!! and now the dealer is trying to put me in a new one! will give me a song for mine. it's broke. and finding a motor is not fun either. seems the junk yards can't keep them. sell as soon as they get them. it's to bad they won't do anything about this. how many complaints for the same problem before the government says enough is enough?? looking to put a lot of money in to this car and then i;m dumping it. probably a nissan or a toyota. sorry america i don't have any more money to throw in to america metal. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Went to start the durango when cold herd a loud knocking noise. i shut the durango off and checked under the hood to see if anythig was stuck under the car. i had the car towed to a service station and they informed me the engine was no good and needed to be replaced. the car has only 65000 miles on it and the powertrain warentee is out on 8/30/11. i can not pay 6000 dollars for a rebuilt motor at this time and need a car to get back and forth to work.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. the contact was driving 25 mph when the engine stalled. the contact stated that prior to the failure, the oil warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the dealer confirmed that the engine rod failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure and the current mileages were 120,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango limited. the contact was driving 35 mph when the vehicle decreased in speed. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where the mechanic confirmed that a connecting rod had detached and punctured a hole in the engine block. the engine would need to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure and the current mileage was 75,874. updated 01/18/13*lj
My well maintained garage kept 2004 5.7l durango with 119,000 miles with absolutely no warning failed to start one morning after sitting for about 3 days. it made a loud noise. i had it towed to the dealer and was told that it had seized and i would need a new engine. the cost would be $7200. the only problem i had previously was that it would stall during extreme rain storms but it occurred infrequently and only under extreme conditions. the dealer had supposedly fixed the problem with this a few months earlier. i bought this vehicle brand new in 2004 and had always maintained it exactly as recommended. *kb
Engine blew with out any sign no noise until it went poof and cloud of blue smoke and rod was through the block. if my husband wouldn't of been with me and my kids would of been in an accident cause i would of thought i just ran over something. it s scary to think we could of all died because of a bad rod that seems to be a problem in these 5.7 engines. *tr
The 5.7 dodge durango motor is a ticking time bomb they run smoothly then with out any warning blow up. i only had 122723 miles on it when it blew it ran great till the road came out through the block. what is it going to take for you to make chrysler make a recall on this some one to get killed while driving down the high way cause i'm glad i was with my wife or that case could of been sooner than u expected. chrysler needs to be held reliable for there huge engine mistake in this middle year before they kill some one going from 65 - 0 on the high way is totally un safe come on government step up to the plate if this was so back yard company you would of shut them down by now do what's right and force them to have a recall before some one gets hurt bad or dies. kids ride in these vehicles if we would do something like cover up a problem we would be persecuted for criminal neglect and endangering the welfare of a child. and that's exactly what chrysler motor corp is doing endangering the welfare of our children and family's so step up ad force the to fix the problem. *tr
Started my vehicle and heard a horrible grinding metal sound. towed it to a mechanic who said that a rod had blown a two inch hole in my engine block. there were pieces of metal in a pile of oil under my vehicle when it was towed and 2 large chunks found upon inspection of vehicle. there was no warning. no problems prior. vehicle ran fine the day before. no lights ever came on the dash either, no check engine...etc. upon researching this issue- i have found numerous similar stories. hoping a class action suit will be investigated. *tr
Started vehicle and heard a loud knocking, shut the vehicle down thinking something may be underneath, restarted the vehicle with same result. had vehicle looked at by mechanic, says that it sounds to be a piston rod. took oil sample, and found metal shavings. vehicle maintenance has been per manufacturer recommendations, along with all warranty and recall work. from readings, this has been happening to other people driving down the road. mechanic says engine will have to be replaced. other issues include vehicle shutting off while driving usually when it rains, or during turns. *tr
When coming to a stop my vehicle stalls / dies! do not get a check engine light. have had a dodge computer put on it and no codes were found. *tr
I was driving down the road when there was a loud clank. i immediately pulled over. it was then towed to a repair shop and we were told the vehicle's engine threw a rod. i had no prior problems with the engine before this. we were then told that by the repair shop that they were unable to find a rebuilt motor as they are on a two year waiting list. we were also told that dodge was aware of this problem and that we can buy a new engine from them because they fixed this problem with the new engine. *js
My passenger and i were sitting at a red light. the check engine of my 2004 dodge durango limited (5.7ltr) came on, then the battery light came on and both of those lights started to flicker. there was a loud squeal and a pop, then the engine stalled and i felt the brake pedal fall straight to the floor. white smoke started to emerge from the engine compartment, which quickly turned a thick black color. i couldn't even see through the smoke, as it was so dense. i grabbed my phone and proceeded to call roadside assistance to get the vehicle off of the road (the vehicle was blocking a lane of a major highway in my town). i started to smell burning plastic and thought, "am i on fire?". my passenger instructed me to lower my window because another driver was yelling something and making hand gestures. when i tried to use the windows, i noticed that i had lost all power. in a panic i opened the door and instructed my passenger to do the same. that was when we heard what the other drivers were screaming. "get out of the truck, it's on fire!". when i turned to get out of the vehicle, that was when i saw the flames flowing up the windshield about 4" long. we jumped out of the vehicle and ran across the road to the curb, turned to view the vehicle, seen that it was a large fire and decided to run about 200-300 feet away from it. just in case it exploded. the firemen were there in under a minute, but the vehicle was engulfed in flames in about 30 to 45 seconds. i have a large family and it's a good thing they were not all with me, as is the case 90% of the time. i do not know if i would've had time to get three small children out of their carseats in time. this could've ended much worse than it did. *tr
On 12-7-11, i was driving through an intersection at about 25 mph when i heard and felt a loud bang and rattling from the engine. there wasn't any warning from the dash board nor was the any pinging prior to the engines catastrophic failure. i had lost all power steering and power brakes. the engine oil was also spill out of the bottom of the engine. i was lucky enough to be able to roll to a stop out of the line of traffic.we have receipts that show we maintained my vehicle regularly. we have not had any cooperation from the dealership or the manufacturer as of yet. i have also researched several incidents with the 5.7 dodge hemi engine. i also researched that, to my understanding, the chrysler corp knew of he potential failure in the 2004/05 5.7 engine, made the changes to the engine but did not issue a recall. i am asking for assistance and/or advice as to what action i and many others should take at this point. thank you. *tr
We have a 2004 dodge durango it has been a good vehicle my wife just loves it but the other day she went to leave for work and when she started the motor it started making this really loud ticking noise. well i called the mechanic and he told me he would stop by on his way home to listen to it he did and said it was not good to go ahead and bring it to the shop and they would look at it. i had it trailered into the shop and later that day is when we got the bad news. the motor has very serious internal problems it's either a rod, wrist pin or piston skirt and can cost us up to $6,000 for new motor or rebuild the lower end of this one they will need to pull the motor to tell for sure what it is, we never had any warning signs at all that there may be a problem it just happened. sorry but we can not afford to replace a engine every 90,000 miles and can not afford to get the repairs done now, we have changed the oil every 5000 mile per manufacture recommendation. after further investigation i see that dodge is having a serious problem with these motors and are misleading the public with all the hype about the hemi motor and they are not doing a darn thing about the issues they are having. my warranty just ran out 4 months ago or 19000 miles ago and the dealership said there is nothing they can do. i feel the engines should last longer then 90,000 miles and i am very peed off about this he have owned dodges forever and now this happens and there is nothing they can do! my wife does not like dodge very much now. *tr
This vehicle has been fine, after the recalls were done,. i have 5 kids love the space and power. i have had recent problems with water in the car wash and when raining making it want to stall but it kept on running. everything was great until yesterday morning. my wife went out to take the kids to mcdonald's and she says "it sounded like a large balloon popped" with a large amount of smoke coming from the exhaust. now i have what sounds like a loud tick or a knock from the passengerside back. it however sounds like a lawn mower running when it does run and per valvoline service "no fire on number eight cylinder". as i now have read i am not the only individual with the problem and it is not isolated. if i had not been doing the recommended matinance and not keeping up on this truck i could understand, but a vehicle costing over $32,000.00 new should last more than 97,000 miles. someone needs to stand up and be accountable. *kb
Upon starting the vehicle in the am after daily use,a loud noise as if the fan belt broke or stones throwing around was heard and oil started flowing from motor. pieces of cast metal found under the vehicle in the midst of the oil....rod blew through!!! only 100k miles and oil was filled, maintenance always completed. we are orig owners. this was a $35k v8 engine vehicle that has been maintained. this should not have happened and as seen on the emonds site as will as dodge, this is a common problem with this vehicle and no recourse for the owner who has done what he or she was to do as far as upkeep on their vehicle??? again this is not a cheap vehicle and we are a family of 5 with 1 income. how and why should we have to fix this problem? we purchase what we thought was a good quality vehicle from a big 3 company!! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. while the vehicle was parked the contact noticed there was antifreeze and water leaking underneath the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the mechanic stated the water pump was leaking and had to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 81,000.
My husband was driving on the highway at 70 mph (out of town) when he heard a very loud "pop". the engine failed and he had to make his way over to the side of the road at a high rate of speed and very little control due to engine failure. he said the truck jerked so hard it actually felt like he hit something. when he made it over to the side of the road he got out of the vehicle and oil was leaking from the bottom of the vehicle. he had the truck towed to a garage. after the service technician inspected the vehicle he said it blew a rod through the engine. the vehicle costs me nearly $30,000.00 and had 129,000 miles on it. after talking with several different mechanics i was told that these engines are know for this problem. a jasper replacement engine cost about $7000.00!!!! i telephoned dodge on a few different occasions and they refuse to help because my extended warranty i paid thousands of dollars for expired. i surely thought i was buying a quality vehicle but apparently i am wrong. i am sure glad i wasn't driving with my kids when this happened, one wrong move and the vehicle could have hit another car! thank god nobody got hurt. now i am stuck trying to figure out what to do with this vehicle????? i certainly don't have $7000.00 dollars and a used engine is very hard to find due to so many people looking for them! when i went into work the next day, my co-worker who has the same exact vehicle with the exception of the color, informed me his engine blew too! come on dodge-get a clue! accept responsibility for your hemi's having problems! i don't know how you stay in business! *tr
I was traveling about 15 mph in my 2004 dodge durango with the 5.7 hemi. the check engine light came on and before i could pull over the engine blew. it knocked a whole in the side of the engine and immeadiately stopped. the engine had 113,000 miles on it and maintenanced reguarly. i have read in several forums with several people with the exact same issue. i called dodge and they informed me that there was nothing they can do. this is an absolute outrage, i am military and living on a fixed budget as it is and can't afford the price of another engine. with all the issues that the 2004 hemi's are having, there has to be an issue with this particular engine. when it would rain my vehicle would stall, so i am not sure if that has anything to do with the engine failing. several people have had the exact same issue as that as well. *tt
Was going to leave for work, started my truck to an instant horrible knocking sound! never even put it in drive. had it towed to my mechanic, and was informed that there was a hole in the engine block, caused by a rod. no warning signs or check engine/oil lights ever came on.. *tr
When driving through a puddle, the engine stalls and the power steering goes out. i was stuck in the middle of a busy intersection for 2-3 minutes until i was able to restart the car. *kb
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge durango. the contact heard a knocking noise as she exit the vehicle. the dealer nor manufacturer were notified of the failure. the vehicle failure was not diagnosed nor was it repaired. the current mileage was 111,500. the approximate failure mileage was 111,400.

on september 12, 2011, i was driving my 2004 dodge durango (71,300mi 5.7l hemi) when the engine failed. i had pulled onto the street and was accelerating to 45mph. i was up to approximately 35mph when i heard a very loud pop, more like an explosion, followed by very loud ''slapping'' noises coming from the engine area. it sounded like a tire burst, followed by driving on a dead flat tire. the car was slowing very quickly, and it had no power. within seconds i realized it was a major engine or transmission problem, and i was going to be stopped in the middle of the road. before so, i was able to shift into neutral and coast off to the side. i do not believe that my wife or daughter would have been able to do the same. they would have stopped within seconds in the middle of this very busy road. the loud slapping noises stopped once the car was in neutral. i was able to put the car into park and visually check around. i saw nothing other than a small trail of oil behind the car, a small puddle under the driver''s side of the engine, and a large amount of oil on the underside and on the side of the engine on the driver''s side. i have much more details to this story, please request if needed, but the dodge dealer told me i had thrown a rod, without even looking inside the engine. no help from the dealer or chrysler, even though this is a hemi (supposed quality) and the warranty only expired 1300 miles ago. *tr
I have a dodge 2004 durango. my children and i were heading to the drs when we were driving about 40 miles and hour through an intersection and all of a sudden we heard this loud noise. i thought i hit something so i pulled over. come to find out, i blew a hole in my engine. not lights, no warning! i have gotten estimates which equal between $5,500 - $6,000 to replace the engine. i have been doing some investigative work and come to find out, this is a major problem in the dodge durango that is not being addressed by the manufacturer. i find my story to be the same that so many have experienced. i too had my engine cut out while i was driving anywhere from 25 miles and hour to 60 miles and hour with no warning. many times while i was turning losing my power steering. this is a major safety issue not to mention now a major economic issue. i do not have the money to repair this without going in debt. i need the assistance nhtsa with this situation. please help me & my family! *tt
