Problems with 2011 Dodge Charger FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

On average, the 2011 Dodge Charger starts to “feel” problems with the FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM and its various aspects after 83 304 miles.

Recently reported FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM problems on 2011 Dodge Charger

Fuel pump (top) under the rear passenger seat develops leaks and spills fuel into and explosive fumes into the passenger area of the car. in researching the problem on google i'm finding this is a very common problem with the 2011 dodge charger. if this is such a widespread and dangerous problem i cannot for the life of me understand why nhtsa has not issued a recall? problem occurs after a fill up. discoloration on the pump shows the extent/volume of gasoline pouring out into the interior floor pan.

The auxiliary fuel pump fail and leaked into the rear right hand passenger compartment. i have spoken to the dealer and manufacture and no one is willing to help with the very big fire hazard . the leak happens when the car is filled with fuel and the tank has ore the half a tank of fuel.

I smelled the strong odor of gasoline inside my charger. i brought it to the dealership who advised that the vehicle was leaking gas from around the o ring at the fuel pump which is located under the rear passenger seat. the mechanic tightened the cover to the fuel pump and returned the vehicle. about a month later the vehicle was now visibly leaking gas fonto the ground and the fuel smell inside the vehicle was intolerable. i returned to the dealer and left it with them for a day in which time they replaced the ring, tested it and found no further leakage and returned the vehicle to me. by the next morning the vehicle was leaking again, this time much worse. i had to park it away from the house for fear that it might cause an explosion when if left in the hot garage with the fumes filling up the garage. i see that there have been 71 complaints filed with nhtsa. this is truly a dangerous defect and should be recalled before someone gets killed. i just had my daughter and grand kids in the car with some of the grand kids sitting over the fuel pump located under the seat. who in there right mind would put fuel pumps under the rear seat. the problem seems to occur when the vehicle's fuel tank is full. when i moved it away from the house it left a trail of gasoline to where i parked it and by the next morning there was a huge spot on the ground and the car was full of fumes. this is a safety hazard if there every was one.

Noticed gas smell immediately after filling gas tank completely up. a couple days later i had a very strong gas smell inside vehicle and while driving. started noticing that there was a moderate size puddle under vehicle where the rear seat is. i've seen many reports of this happening and it disturbs me that there hasn't been a recall.

I have been smelling gas inside of the cabin of my car for a while usually only in the morning or after my car has been sitting a while. finally this morning, 2/5/2019, the smell was so bad that i had a headache and my eyes were burning and so took it to an auto mechanic shop to look at it. they stated there was a puddle of gasoline sitting on my fuel pump that is under the passenger side seat. that is the side my daughter sits on and she has been complaining of headaches as well. the repair shop said that if i were to have gotten into a wreck and there had been a spark of some sort my car would have gone up in flames because there was a pool of gasoline sitting on the fuel pump.

To whom it may concern, i recently had a very strong odor of gasoline inside of my vehicle and noticed my fuel efficiency didn't appear to be as good as normal. i noticed on christmas eve 12/24/18 that i had a visible fuel trail on the outside ground, near the rear passenger-side door as it was parked. i have since not driven my vehicle out of concern that the issue would result in something much worse. i have a child and will not put him or myself in danger. i'm in the process of trying to get my car to a local dodge dealer for service assistance. since my car has such low mileage, and i'm the original owner, it's difficult to believe that i would be dealing with a fuel leak from a 2011 vehicle. i've researched this issue and have found numerous others that have explained they've experienced the exact same problem with their 2011 dodge charger se or similar year/model. i'm concerned there should be a recall for this fuel leak problem, but i have not seen any mention of an actual recall issued for this. i know this will result in a pricey repair from the dealer, but, i will have to do what is necessary for the safety of my family and myself. ref: carcomplaints.com https://www.carcomplaints.com/dodge/charger/2011/fuel_system/fuel_propulsion_system.shtml chargerforurms.com https://www.chargerforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=264049 chargerforumz.com https://www.chargerforumz.com/threads/fuel-smell-in-backseat-fuel-filter-is-faulty.180462/ please let me know if there are any further details i can supply.

Fuel smell and leak from right side tank constant causes lag in performance and hazardous in traffic as it will seem to loose power and hesitate happens consistently now after heavy breaking or any quick force on throttle when having to speed up due to traffic on highway or to any response needed while driving ..ie accident ahead or quick action needed to avoid one

Raw fuel smell in interior of car, part number 68159764ab pickup/level unit module has cracking in housing causing fuel to leak and fumes to come into car. this module is located under the rear seat area of the car, and has 2 plastic body plugs that are supposed to seal out the fumes but they fit loose and don't seal very well, called ultimate dodge in mountain home arkansas and told them about the complaint. they replied it was a recall, scheduled a repair on 12/14/2018 took vehicle in, dealership called me and told me that it is not covered according to the vin #. i told them that it is leaking fuel and that it was a safety issue. they told me that they could not repair it because it wasn't under the recall. i looked it up on google there are several complaints that say its covered. this vehicle is leaking fuel so its an explosive issue and a fire hazard. please look into this. i had to purchase the part and have it repaired for officer and public safety. this is a patrol car and the manufactures that build these vehicles should be held accountable for there vehicles.

I smelled gas when i filled my car up with gas. i looked online and seen other complaints and where to find where the smell was coming from. i lifted up the rear seat and there was fuel sitting on top of the fuel pump right under the seat. there is no protection between the seat and fuel pump. so now my check engine light is on which is deactivating my remote start. i feel like this should be a recall and i should not have to pay to have this fixed. it's very dangerous.

Strong fuel order when fill gas tank. i looked online it looks like a common issue. this is extremely dangerous someone's going to get killed if it hasn't happened already. the gas leaks out at the top of the fuel sending unit located under rear seat on the passengers side. when i took the seat off there was a puddle of fuel. again this is extremely dangerous and seems to be a very common issue after reading online.

Gas tank is leaking on top right side, when full. dealership says there is no recall. need a recall. fast!

I started smelling gas inside my car. i noticed a wet place on the ground under where my gas tank is. i took my car to my mechanic. he stated that when the tank is full, it is leaking on the top right side of my tank because that side is not welded correctly together. this is a safety hazard. i have children that ride in my car. my mechanic said just the cost of a new tank is $1,100.00. that is not including the labor to remove the old one to put a new one in. this problem should be added as a recall due to so many others having the same issue.

My car started smelling like gas all the time. when i got back from the store i noticed the gas was leaking from the passenger side back door. there was a gas puddle and the inside of the car smelled like a lot of gas. my brother lifted the back seat and there was a lot of gas leaking from the fuel tank.

Malfunction indicator light has come on twice in past month. first time a vacuum cannister was replaced. the 2nd time i told the dealer that i also smelled gas. i was told the the right fuel pump is "cracked" and a replacement will cost over $900. my car has only 35,000 miles on it. after seeing all of the other complaints about this, why hasn't a recall been issued? *tt

After filling up car with gasoline it is leaking onto ground, and smell filling up cabin. online there are hundreds of complaints about this issue with car.

Went to autozone for the free check engine light reading. it came back with a code p0456 which is a evap leak. my car does seem to have a light gas odor after i fill it up with gas. the smell continues to linger but eventually seems to go away. i have researched the problem and see there are many post and complaints about the issue. i don't notice any fuel leaking from my car but i can smell gas. my car is a 2011 but only has 70,000 miles as of today 5/3/18. i'm filing a complaint because a lot of forums online about the issue says i should since it seems to be a lot of other 2011 dodge chargers se rwd with the same problem.

When i fill my tank, the fuel pump under the back seat on the passenger side over fills and leaks raw gasoline into the cab. i have looked online and found hundreds of people with 2011 and 2012 chargers with the same problem. second i had a head light go out on the passenger side. i replaced the bulb and still isn't working, checked the fuses and those are, good to. maybe it's a faulty wire harness. also found people online with the same issue.

When driving down the interstate (august 2017 with 130k miles on the dash) i suddenly lost throttle response and i could not accelerate. at this point motor began to shake as i coasted to the edge as my car shut off while still in the run position. a red lighting bolt appeared and my vehicle did not want to start. after attempting to start several times the car finally started. took it to a dealer in garden city michigan where they could find nothing wrong. the lighting bolt light was gone and only a check engine light remained. fast forward two months later the same thing happened but i could not get the car to start and it was towed to the same dealer with a dead battery this time. they kept it for several days but could not pin point the issue i.e. bad throttle body, bad fuel pumps etc. however no codes were found because the battery died. the week before thanksgiving same situation, lost throttle response car shut off got the red bolt , battery died. towed to aaa where i had to purchase a new battery and again no codes were found. again this happened today while on the interstate traveling at about 80mph. are there any tips or documentation of similar problems with the red bolt light? ive had dealership mechanics with 30+ years experience get lost with this issue. they have comes up with options but nothing concrete. i will soon be force to start guessing and checking or just get rid of the vehicle all together

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 dodge charger. while the vehicle was parked, a strong fuel odor was present. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the local dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was approximately 80,000. the vin was not available.

On the morning of 8/20 i drove 2 blocks from my house when the chattery save mode turned on accompanied by the battery light on the dash shortly after the car lost power steering and all electric components shut off and then the car shutoff and was immobile after that. i pushed the car home and the car hasn't turned over since. i disconnected the battery and used a battery charger to recharge so i can put my windows up when i reconnected the battery i put the car in run knowing the alternator was bad and pending recall. as the windows hit the closed position black smoke started coming off the alternator and i promptly disconnected the battery again completely after turning the car into off position again. the alternator continued to smoke for 5 minutes as i stared at it with fire extinguisher in hand and phone in the other with 911 dialed and ready. as the car sat in the driveway after all this i noticed a fuel smell that came from the car then i noticed a fuel leak. a constant dripping of 1or 2 drops per 5seconds. the leak comes from below the door hinges area of the passenger side rear door. i cannot find the origin but this is where it drips from. i've read that this is also a common problem but dodge or any other affiliate has recalled any fuel components and people that have changed the full fuel system tank hoses pumps everything still continue to have this issue when the vehicle is filled with gas to max capacity and the leak stops once the fuel level reaches 3/4 tanks or less.

After fueling my vehicle above 3/4ths (but not over full) a fuel leak started causing extreme fuel vapors to be present inside and outside of car. even when the car is not being driven (while vehicle is turned off). the fumes are so strong that they fill my garage and can be smelled from 40 - 50 feet away and i have to drive with the windows down. this is a serious safety concern. many other forums have been read for me to realize this is not an isolated incident, is common among this make/model/year, and should be cause for a recall for safety reasons before something bad happens (fire, explosion, etc). most say the observed a leak in front of the rear passenger tire. others have said they pulled out the back seat to access the fuel pump and have found gas sitting on top of the fuel pump. i have not had this looked at by a mechanic/dealership yet, but wanted to ensure this is reported and needs to pushed for recall consideration. updated 11/08/2017*js

Purchased a 2011 dodge charger 2 months ago for my teenage son. when filling up gas tank more than 3/4 full gas leaks while car in park from area about 1.5 feet in front of rear passenger wheel. cabin smells of gas odor. called dealer that i purchased car from...no help. tons of complaints online regarding this problem. extremely concerned for son to drive dodge. please stand behind your cars. let's recall this and keep people safe before a life is lost. one life is too many.

When tank is filled, a strong fuel odor occurred inside car, along with a puddle directly in front of right rear tire. dealership first "fixed" secondary fuel pump but problem recurred at next fill up. subsequently the primary fuel pump was replaced. it is extremely fortunate this did not result in a fire or death with my kids riding in this car on a daily basis. dodge knows about issue as tons of complaints can be found on line. http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2011/dodge/charger/fuel+system

For several months when filling gas tank up i would smell a strong gas odor in the cabin of the car. after the gas level would start to go down the oder would go away. well, the last few days the odor got really strong and it didn't matter how much gas was in the tank, it made me and my family really nauseous, and after a few days of this the check engine light came on and the car started sputtering like it wanted to staul out. well finally after about a week of this the odor got so strong that it made me very fatigued and sick, you can smell the gas in my clothes and my eyes started to burn. my cars engine is clumping like the engine is about to go out so i parked it at home and shut it off. i'll have to have it towed to dealership to have it looked at. i'm sure it's gonna be just like everyone else's car with the tube leading from gas tank refule door to tank. how this hasn't been recalled is beyond me because it's affecting thousands of vehicles.

My vehicle is a 2011 dodge charge 80,000 miles. for about 4months its been smelling like fume, gasoline inside the vehicle like if there was a leak when the car is stationary, in motion at all times. when i fill my gas tank the smell gets worst. since it began to smell like gasoline the check engine light has been on. i have not fixed the problem because mechanics are wanting approximately $500 to fix the gasoline fuel system. i hope i don't blow up.it is a unsafe condition to drive my vehicle because i have twin 1year olds. i have contacted the dealer to find if there is a recall but they state they don't.

When the car is filled with gas, it emits a strong odor of gas and leaks under the rear passage side of car approx. 16 inches in front of rear tire. as the tank gets lower of fuel, the smell is not as strong and leak disappears. this occurs when the car is parked. if the car is driven with a full fuel tank, there is a strong gas odor inside the cabin. this smell lessens as the fuel tank empties. i have taken video of the exterior fuel leak approx.17 hours after fill up that show a steady fuel drip every 12-15 seconds.

If i fill up my tank of gas it starts leaking from underneath the vehicle. fumes can be smelled inside of the vehicle and outside as well. its very penetrating. when its hot outside if the car remains close when u arr inside the fumes begin to givr you a sore throat and short of breath. very dangerous

Every time i fill up a strong odor of gas is observed inside the cabin of the car and area around the car until it get's down to about 1/2 tank of fuel. i've read several complaints and costing us consumers like $1,000.00 to $1,800.00.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 dodge charger. the contact stated that a fuel odor was present inside and outside of the vehicle. the cause of the failure was not diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 80,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 dodge charger. the contact stated that there was a strong fuel odor in the vehicle and a fuel leak. the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the dealer diagnosed that the fuel filler tube needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired due to the part being on national back order. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 123,115.

Strong odor of gasoline whenever gas tank is full. will make driver light headed.

As i approached my car there was a heavy odor of fuel. the next morning under the back right tire there was a puddle of fuel. i removed the back seat and under the cover there was a puddle of fuel on top of the plastic of the gas tank. dodge has been clearly made aware of this issue and since changed the design of the gas tank. for me to replace it would cost me over $2,000. this should be replaced by dodge asap. this puts my family and i in grave danger being that of the electrical wire that run along side the unit. this only happens when i fill my tank and it is a continual drip. i contacted dodge and they said they "know" nothing of such issues. all it will take a one dropped cigarette to close to the car and things will be bad.

I filled my car up, 20 minutes later, the car reeked of gas. i got out and looked under the vehicle, and there's gas leaking for the passenger side by the back tire. i looked online, and there are complaint's dating back to 2012. including ones on this site. i'm hoping dodge issues a recall soon. because i'm concerned about my family's safety.

On july 11th 2016 i filled up my gas tank immediately afterwards while driving i noticed an overwhelming smell of gasoline. 5 days later the check engine light came on. the code detected a small evap system leak. the check engine light sporadically illuminates and then turns off on its own. the smell of gasoline goes away when the tank is half full. when the tank is full, gasoline drips directly in front of the passenger rear tire. upon researching the problem on the internet i discovered on carcomplaints.com that over 40 people have complained of this same issue. the fuel pump continues to pump gas once the car is turned off. the gas tank leaks when the tank is over half way full. according to other complaints on carcomplaints.com chrysler and dodge have been notified of this same problem multiple times. dodge and chrysler refuse any knowledge of this issue even though they redesigned the fuel system after the 2011 and also recalled the hemi model for the same issue. chrysler/dodge has yet to recall the fuel system on my v6 model. i don't feel safe driving my car. can an investigation be opened on this issue since there is 50 complaints online that date all the way back to 2012? a gas tank shouldn't not "wear-out" and leak after 5 years.... does someone have to die or become severely injured for something to be done about this issue? many people complained of alternator issues, it took a fire to occur for chrysler to finally recall the alternator on the dodge chargers. it seems that chrysler dodge is just waiting for a catastrophic event to occur before they decide to recall this issue...thats what it took for chrysler to issue a recall on the alternator, even though there were numerous complaints recorded! *tr

We have a gas smell for some time ,and we took it to dealer ship and they did not find anything , this happened when we have a full thank, so this morning i did it and we can see the gas leak from the tank and we are scare that this may catch on fire,.i read that there is 6 complaints about the same thing. and they tried to fix it ,.and cost like 2000 ,. please make sure that they do something before something happend,.

2 weeks ago i purchased this vehicle from a used car lot. this was the first time filling the fuel tank all the way. once i left the gas station i started smelling gas fumes. once the car was parked i noticed it leaking gas under the passenger side in front of the back wheel. 3 days later noticed it went from having a full tank to missing an 1/8 of a tank. while it was sitting at work it continuously dripped fuel until i had a flatbed pick it up to take it back to the lot. pulled the back seat and the cover for the fuel pump and there was standing gas around the fuel pump. very bad design to have the fuel pump at an angle for it to leak that bad if a seal goes bad.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 dodge charger. while parked, the vehicle leaked fuel in the rear passenger wheel weld, near the exhaust pipe and the battery line. the contact took the vehicle to a dealer to be repaired. the o-ring around the fuel tank was replaced, but the issue recurred. the vehicle smelled of fuel and dripped gasoline into the cabin of the vehicle. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was 92,000.

I have been doing research on any cars like mine suffering from the same problem. yes they are. my problem is that since friday the 29th of april my car started smelling like gasoline. i feel that this is a serious safety hazard. with the electrical devices and heat generating devices this could end up a death related catastrophe. my complaint is why haven't you as a safety organization done something about this. people with this type of vehicle know it is a problem and even when i took my car to the dealer they knew. i am 72 years old on a fixed income of rather miserly means and i can't afford to protect my family because of chrysler corp. failure to do so. i just got a call from my dealer and the cost of fixing my car is over 500.00. is there something you an do to help us?

My serpentine belt keep coming off just paid $450 to fix 4 months ago now it's come off again!

I purchased a 2011 dodger charger 1week ago from texan dodge chrysler jeep ram in humble tx. i test drive the car on a half tank of gas no problem at the time until i decided to buy the car off a trade in. deal went great im on my way back houston i notice the gas tank is full know 20 min into the ride i start smelling gas. so i roll the window down got home lift up the back seat i notice the gas smell has gotten stronger now iam looking at the fuel pump with gas on top one spark hole car could have blew up...these mechanic are a f..k.. joke what ever happen to safercars ..

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 dodge charger. while the vehicle was parked, the contact smelled a strong odor of fuel inside and outside the vehicle continuously. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that an accumulation of fuel leaked onto the fuel pump. the mechanic placed an o-ring onto the fuel pump. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 105,718.

2011 dodge charger with 85,000 miles has strong fuel odor inside the vehicle and on the outside rear passenger panel. panel code indicated evaporation leak. dodge tech found fuel pump seal leaking vapor into cabin and fuel under rear passenger seat. tech replaced the fuel pump and o-rings at a total cost of $525.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 dodge charger. while the vehicle was parked and after refueling, a strong odor of fuel was noticed. the contact noticed fuel leaking from an unknown area of the rear passenger side and the engine check warning light illuminated. the failure recurred whenever the vehicle was refueled. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel tank was leaking and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 70,000.

My vehicle was leaking gas near the rear passenger door after i filled up. when i took it to have it checked the dealership told me it was a leaking seal and fixed it. about two weeks later when i filled up again the problem occurred again. after keeping my car for nearly 8 hours the dealership told me that the fuel tank on the car cannot hold the weight of a full tank of gas which causes a separation near the seal which in turn causes the leak. i googled this problem and many people are having the same problem, but chrysler refuses to pay full cost to repair it. they offered to help pay for the repairs but said they cannot fix it free of charge because it is not a recall and my car is out of warranty.

My alternator went out around 45k miles in 2013/2014. i had it replaced; it has since been recalled, but dodge refused to acknowledge the issue when it was brought in even though there was a strong smell of something electrical burning along with a loss in electrical power. in 2016, at around 75k miles, fuel started leaking from just in front of the rear passenger-side tire. the gasket between the tank and pump was replaced. after the next fill up, the leak became worse. i had the car towed to another shop. when the tow truck driver was driving it onto the truck, gas was spraying downward with a good amount of pressure. the second shop also suspected the gasket due to the design of the fuel system. they also replaced it, but the leak persisted. after further investigation, the fuel pump assembly had developed a crack. i don't appreciate the thought of driving something that could catch on fire or worse. apparently, the fuel system was "redesigned" post 2011 models. dodge refuses to acknowledge that a fuel system issue can result in a major hazard. an oil change shop even commented on the strong gas smell and warned of the danger.

Gas leaks when tank is above 3/4 fuel. it leaks beside the right rear tire, and it gives off a very strong odor inside cabin. this is a hazardous situation. the gas will leak until under 3/4 tank of gas.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 dodge charger. while the vehicle was parked, a strong smell of fuel was noticed within the vehicle. the contact observed drops of fuel leaking underneath the rear passenger side door. the contact mentioned that the failure occurred when the fuel tank was filled. the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 99,000.

Anytime i fill my gas tank it gives a foul smell and later noticed fuel leak on rear passenger side right in front of passenger side rear tire, now i have to fill my tank only half because it leaks when i fill it up,this is a huge safety issue.

2011 dodge charger / 82,000 miles: leaking fuel pump/component on passenger side. after a routine fill up an extremely strong odor of gasoline was present inside of the car and outside of the car. pool of gasoline present near rear tire when vehicle is parked. removal of backseat revealed a large puddle of gasoline on top of the gas tank. fuel pump o-ring was replaced but to my disappointment problem persists. contacted dodge about issue but they said there were currently no recalls associated with fuel pump equipment and could not point me towards a culprit. even at less than half a tank the smell is overbearing causing headaches making the car a literal pain to drive. there is a battery cable running in close proximity to the pool of gas and the gas drips below around hot exhaust. i do not feel safe driving the vehicle this way due to the risk of fire or explosion. this is a static component and i feel that it should not simply wear out. there is another issue here that is causing this to happen. next items to check will be fuel pump and tank itself. even if issue is resolved i fear that the smell will remain for some time. really unfortunate for a vehicle that is still being paid for. i hope this gets addressed soon as the fuel pump or fuel tank are not cheap fixes. there seems to be quite a few of identical complaints on here as well as other forums. logging a complaint now in case a fire occurs that destroys the car, property or injury. its encouraging to see other have reported the same failure but i cannot locate any recall information.

2011 dodge charger / 50,733 miles: when adding 5 or more gallons of fuel into the tank, there's a strong odor of gasoline coming from the car and gas is leaking by the back tire. lifting the seat, there's a puddle of gas. logging a complaint now in case a fire occurs that destroys the car, property or injury. its encouraging to see other have reported the same failure but i cannot locate any recall information.
