Problems with 2011 Dodge Charger ENGINE

On average, the 2011 Dodge Charger starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 65 518 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2011 Dodge Charger

The car seems to continue overheating no matter what after numerous deliveries to the dealership, i was assured the car would no longer overheat but it continues to do so.

The car gave an error message 'vehicle not in par'. could not turn engine off. eventually car began to overheat and caused blown head gaskets. have to get an entire new engine and replace shifter and push to start system.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 dodge charger. while driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled and the vehicle was towed to the contact's home. an independent mechanic examined the vehicle and diagnosed that the engine head gasket failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 100,000.

I gave the car fuel throttle and it stalled then died on the freeway. after being struck by another car from behind, the car started fine and still runs perfect. no check engine light. my research suggest the pcm on these cars are faulty.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 dodge charger. while driving at an unknown speed, there was a clicking noise coming from the instrument panel and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the contact also detected an odor of burning oil through the vents and smoke appeared from the front passenger side of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the valve cover gasket was fractured, which caused oil to leak onto the pressure sensor switch. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer. the manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to nhtsa. the approximate failure mileage was 113,680.

The car had an alternator and airbag recall which i tried to schedule several times but the part was never ready. while driving to work on the 880 freeway the car shut off b/c of the alternator, now i have to pay put of pocket and they are going to reimburse me and i have to rent a car for the next 2 days.. inconvenience to no end.

I am wondering if i have any further actions that are available to me for a recall situation. my car had a recall for the timing chain and i had the recall performed in 2014. a few weeks ago while on the highway during rush hour in a snow storm the timing chain failed and destroyed my engine. i had seconds to negotiate my lane and get to safety which i could not. the back of my vehicle was still sticking out of the right lane. i was informed by the state patrol i caused several accidents behind me and my vehicle was also almost struck by a semi truck. i do not drive my vehicle year round so between 2014 and now the vehicle had less than 20,000 miles put on it with the new timing chain. i contacted dodge and they informed me the new timing chain had a warranty of only 2 years so all subsequent damage was my responsibility. i am making the assumption the correct chain was not put on my vehicle during the recall repair or was never changed at all. the vehicle had a total of 54,000 miles on it and according to all the forums, this is typically within the mileage the chain fails and under the exact conditions of which i was driving. the vehicle has been well maintained and has no extenuating circumstances that should have led to a catastrophic engine failure. now dodge wants to charge me $5,000 for the engine repair which was caused from the timing chain they supposedly installed.

My 2011 dodge charger rt 5.7l v8 hemi started having issues running, it felt like it was idling high when sitting still while running in drive, but the rpm's were normal. then it would periodically sound like it was not going to start, when turning it on, it would sputter and struggle to start, but t would start. the service engine light came on and the vehicle started having issues on the highway at high speeds, if you took your foot off accelerator to slow down gradually and then try to accel again it would would not acccel, and it would feel like it was pulling back, or braking. the car would then jump to accel like it was just put into gear. after a diagnosis we found there was a cylinder 3 misfire.the spark plugs were changed, all of the, and the coil, and the injector, and still it ran bad. finally the dealership was able to say that there was a camshaft failure due to an internal issue. it was wiped out along with the lifters, because the rockers stopped rocking. this car is 7 years old, but only has about 81,000 miles, so the power train is up. the car was regularly serviced and taken care of and there is no reason that there should be such a failure with an engine that is so low on miles.

I was driving my vehicle straight down a city street at 36 miles per hour through an intersection light and my car began to shake really hard and the car began to drop speed on its own, i went to press the gas to acelerate and the egine light began to flash and the air conditioner started blowing really hot air and i lost all power to the vehicle.i tried to push the gas to turn off the busy street but i had no power so i had to pretty much coast to the nearest place to get out of traffice. once i pulled over into a parking lot the car started to have a smell as if something was burning underneath the hood, at that point i put the car in park and pushed the off button, i sat a few minutes then tried to restart the car but it would not start and kept making a noise so i turned the car off got out and got my toddler out of the backseat and called my husband, he arrived about 10 minutes later and tried jump starting the car but it would not start and was making a weird noise when pushing the start button, at this point i figured the car stopped due to the alternator recall that was issued so i called my insurance company and had the vehicle towed to my local dodge dealership where i had a diagnostic done on the vehicle and was told my engine is completely burned up due to lack of oil which is not true becuase i checked the oil dipstick 2 days after it had been sitting at the dodge dealership and there was oil in the car and no oil leaks, i just had an oil change in march of this year (2018) so i believe my engine was burned up completely due to the alternator and a circut shortage cased the car to over heat and burn the engine, i need this to be investgated to see if this is secondary to the recall so that i can see if im responsible for the damages or not because now i need an entire new engine which is over $8,000 in costs.

When driving down the interstate (august 2017 with 130k miles on the dash) i suddenly lost throttle response and i could not accelerate. at this point motor began to shake as i coasted to the edge as my car shut off while still in the run position. a red lighting bolt appeared and my vehicle did not want to start. after attempting to start several times the car finally started. took it to a dealer in garden city michigan where they could find nothing wrong. the lighting bolt light was gone and only a check engine light remained. fast forward two months later the same thing happened but i could not get the car to start and it was towed to the same dealer with a dead battery this time. they kept it for several days but could not pin point the issue i.e. bad throttle body, bad fuel pumps etc. however no codes were found because the battery died. the week before thanksgiving same situation, lost throttle response car shut off got the red bolt , battery died. towed to aaa where i had to purchase a new battery and again no codes were found. again this happened today while on the interstate traveling at about 80mph. are there any tips or documentation of similar problems with the red bolt light? ive had dealership mechanics with 30+ years experience get lost with this issue. they have comes up with options but nothing concrete. i will soon be force to start guessing and checking or just get rid of the vehicle all together

Check engine light comes on as im driving on a highway at 70mph and my car goes into "limp" mode which could of caused an accident. cylinder 5 misfire is the diagnosis after taking it to the dealer. it appears to be a bad lifter inside of the head in which caused over 4k to fix. this is a safety hazard in which the engine failed while driving with my family inside!!

Oil filter housing the oil filter housing of vehicle was damage creating major leak in the engine with a high risk of causing fire. i noticed a considerable amount of oil while the car was park outside my driveway , i immediately take the vehicle to the mechanic shop where was repaired costing me $582 for parts and labor. i consider this issue a safety recall due to amount of oil spill in the motor, this can definetelly cause fire in the vehicle while driving.

I drive a 2011 dodge charger rt my vehicle continues to loss power and when power is lost i have no power streering or brakes. i was advised my vehicle has a active recall t-36 in which the problems i'm have are a direct result of the recall. my vehicle has been in the shop multiple times at classic dodge in denton tx. the only thing classic dodge has done is replace the battery stating we had to start there and advised me fca has not sent out a fix and wont until feb 2018. i have reported to classic dodge in denton as well as my fca case manager my vehicle continues to loss power and has almost resulted in several crashes and fca has failed to resolve the problem and has stopped returning my phone calls. on 12-05-17 i was involved in a automoble crash in the charger caused by the loss in power and i ran into a tree causing vehicle structual damage.

Letter from congressman rouzer on behalf of constituent re 2011 dodge charger false recall notice on the motor. *ld the consumer stated the vehicle had a recall repair performed on the engine, but the engine failed while driving on a highway. the consumer concluded that the vehicle was not actually repaired for the recall and that the documents were falsified. the consumer stated the recall was supposed to be completed prior to having owned the vehicle. the manufacturer was made aware and was supposed the replace the motor with a new one, instead replaced the motor with a rebuilt one. the vehicle was leaking water from the exhaust pipe, extreme shaking, and smelled of burning oil. the consumer requested to have the motor replaced with a new one. *js

The manufacturer has a recall (p60) on the car but i'm not covered since i have a 180 amp alternator. i almost had a major accident in the middle of a very busy atlanta express way because my car shut off and blowing a smelly air out of the vents. the power was lost and it had a message saying battery saver mode. this is not right that they will not cover my call and it is having the same issues. the service department at the dealership said this is the same issue that others chargers are having and they are covered. if some would have lost their life then then would be out of more than fixing a car.

For several months when filling gas tank up i would smell a strong gas odor in the cabin of the car. after the gas level would start to go down the oder would go away. well, the last few days the odor got really strong and it didn't matter how much gas was in the tank, it made me and my family really nauseous, and after a few days of this the check engine light came on and the car started sputtering like it wanted to staul out. well finally after about a week of this the odor got so strong that it made me very fatigued and sick, you can smell the gas in my clothes and my eyes started to burn. my cars engine is clumping like the engine is about to go out so i parked it at home and shut it off. i'll have to have it towed to dealership to have it looked at. i'm sure it's gonna be just like everyone else's car with the tube leading from gas tank refule door to tank. how this hasn't been recalled is beyond me because it's affecting thousands of vehicles.

8/12/16 driving with my fiance and baby girl near home i noticed the battery saving mode warning, not long after navigation and radio shut off fearing the worst i began to head back home through small streets where less civilians and moving cars. engine roaring like if it was trying to fight to get every last drop of the batteries power. as i was entering the gate to my home the car officially gave up and all the power completely died. i couldn't brake nor turn the wheel without giving it my whole body weight and pressure to prevent it from going head on into someones home. my fiance even had trouble unlocking the doors within the car to jump out and help in whatever way he thought he was going to help. and this was going on with the emergency brake on. thankfully no collision occurred thanks to my quick thinking and luck. hoping it was only the battery that was the problem i got it completely re-charged. when i reconnected it i noticed all lights turning on thinking problem solved, nevertheless immediately the engine began to shake and smoking up. quickly turning it off i researched that a recall p60 for my make model and year are available for what happened to my car but sadly not my engine and alternator power wth. 4yrs 37307 miles on my 2011 dodge charger r/t mopar edition 5.7l v8 hemi on time with maintenance and payments why is this happening to me!! i cant afford paying anything extra other than what i signed up to pay i thought new car no problems im so wrong i had to take my car in for so many many recalls not including when i tried to solve the problems it was giving me before i even received notice that a recall was available for the problem, and now this! the alternator is fried and the radiator will be next i know because an engine is like our anatomy one affected part soon affects the next part that makes the other function. hopefully im wrong.

Driving home from work 65mph, all lights on dash went out, radio went dark, a/c blew super hot air and blinded me and engine died and wouldn't restart. i had to carefully get off road on the hottest day of the ear to find smoke coming from 5.7l engine. small fire from alternator! almost hit 5 cars and almost got hit by 3. this is the same alternator from the previous p60 recall, but isn't covered because recall only affects 3.6l engines. why would the recall cover one but not the other?

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 dodge charger. while the vehicle was stationary, the engine malfunctioned and there was a ticking noise when the vehicle was idle. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was approximately 85,000.

44,000 miles and alternator failed resulting in 1000.00 expense.

V8 model, car went into battery save mode and shortly after the battery light came on while driving. car almost died and i was fortunate to make it to a local dealer. the diagnosis was a bad alternator that wasn't outputting enough for the car. car was in motion and it was a combination of street and roadway driving.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 dodge charger. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 25 mph, all the vehicle warning indicators illuminated and the engine failed. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 84,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 dodge charger. while driving at an unknown speed, the check engine warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that there was an internal evaporation leak, which caused carbon monoxide to emit into the vehicle. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 74,657.

tl* the contact owns a 2011 dodge charger. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was towed to the contacts residence and then an independent mechanic where the alternator was replaced but the failure recurred. the contact noticed that the battery save mode and the brake warning indicators flashed when the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the alternator assembly was replaced a second occasion under a manufacturer recall. the contact stated that a week after the repair, the service engine warning light illuminated. the vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic where it was informed that the thermostat was not properly closed and that a diagnosis needed to be performed. the vehicle was also included in nhtsa campaign number: 16v046000 (electrical system) but the part was not available. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the approximate failure mileage was 92,000. parts distribution disconnect.

First the abs and esc lights came on then the message battery saver mode then the radio turned off and the ac stopped blowing cold air then the battery light came on. i turned off the car and tried to start it but it would not start but the windshield wipers did come on for 1 pass and the speedometer and tac also did 1 pass left to right and back slowly. checked the internet and seen others with same problem cause by the alternator and their is a current recall on the v6 but i have the hemi v8. had the car towed to the dodge dealer.

On 07/20/2015 at around 1:15 i parked my vehicle in concord mills mall parking lot, went in to return a product. i returned to my car around 1:25, attempted to start my vehicle(push button start) it cycled to the "run" position, but the car didn't start. after about 4 attempts i knew something was wrong because i smelt a "burnt electrical smell". i exited the vehicle and popped my hood, i took a look around at all physical features of the engine to try and locate a visual problem. nothing was visible to my eye, i then got back into the vehicle and attempted to start the vehicle again, after a few attempts i called to my local dealership to ask a couple questions on what might be going on, after some speculation we came to check my fuses. i then exited the vehicle and took a look at my fuse box located under my hood, i noticed that i had a 30amp 58v "boxed shaped fuse" that had blown. i visited a near by advance auto parts store to purchase a fuse, they did have one so i purchased the fuse and returned to the vehicle to install. once i returned to the vehicle i disconnected my "+ positive" battery terminal and installed the fuse. afterwards i reconnected the battery terminal and attempted to start the vehicle again. once again i got nothing, i also checked the fuse and it had blown again. i then contacted a tow truck and was towed to henedrick dodge on 7/20 around 5:45. they contacted me on 7/21 and i was told that my engine wire harness had melted!! and that it had shorted out my starter. i'm very upset because i feel that this engine harness could have caught fire. my obd didn't make me aware of any type of issue or no check engine light ever came on. my car has been serviced on time to factory standards at only dodge dealerships. no major work has ever been done to my vehicle before also. i'm getting the $1600.00 fix but feel bother that something could catch fire.

I owned and purchased my 2011 dodge charger since 5-17-2014. on 7-13-2015, my son was getting ready to leave art institutes of atlanta/decatur, the 2011 charger he was operating would not crank. after the wrecker arrived to get ready and tow, the car cranked and he made it home from decatur, ga to mcdonough, ga. the next day, 7-14-2015, i tried to start the car and it wouldn't crank till i called a wrecker on 7-16-15 to tow the vehicle to landmark dodge in morrow, ga. they called me on 7-20-2015 and informed me my warranty or chrysler would not cover the issue bothering the car (lost engine ground and melted ground wire, left side engine at motor mount). they tested the electric system, starter, starter wiring and relay, and tightened all engine grounds, replaced engine ground left side at motor mount. it was repaired on 7-20-2015. the repair came up to $308.29 (parts and labor). please investigate this matter on the 2011 charger before it happens to someone else and it really costed me. updated 9/28/15 *ln. updated 12/13/2017*cn

6/19/15 the car was taken to the dealer originally for a recall on the alternator. after the job was completed i drove the car home and had trouble shutting it off. after shifting it through the gears several times it shut off. the next day i had the same problem. i took it to the dealer the next weekend and they could not replicate the problem. i took the car home and it shut off fine. the next day the problem started again. i took it back to the dealer and this time they were able to replicate the problem and was told to shift it through the gears and it would be fine. also told that the only way to shut the car off was to remove a fuse to the fuel injection. truly not an acceptable answer. 7/13/15 the car wouldn't shut off at all. drove it to the dealer and it's been there ever since. i have been told several different things by the dealer, lithia dodge, medford, or. the latest is an actual dodge corporate engineer is supposed to call them back. not exactly sure how a car can be designed without an alternate way to shut it off if the push button start and stop does not work. the dates are approximate as my paperwork is in the car.

Tl* takata recall. the contact owns a 2011 dodge charger. while driving at any speed, the check engine warning indicator flashed randomly, and the air conditioning and heating functions failed to work. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the actuator, compressor, and thermostat were replaced, but the failure continued. the service engine indicator continued to illuminate and the vehicle drove roughly. the contact also received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 16v352000 (air bags). the dealer was unable to confirm when the parts would become available because they were on a national backorder. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was not available. vin tool confirms parts not available.

Received message on console why driving "battery saver mode" drove 1 mile and pulled into gas station. while parked and car running radio, abs, stability control systems all went offline. i turned the car off and smelled electrical burning. opened hood and burning smell was stronger. i returned to the car and all electrical power was completely drained. towed to dodge dealership after calling chrysler recall hotline. *tr

Bought 2011 charger in july, 2014. on october 22nd, i noticed a funny smell, but could not locate. on october 24, my car started making a whining sound that got louder over next 3 miles. i pulled over to a parking lot, notice smoke coming from under hood. i lift hood and see oil leaking out of timing chain cover onto alternator. my car shut off, won't start, and battery saver mode light flashing, gauges acting weird, and lights dimming. after about 15 minutes, i started car to get home with it, drove maybe 2 miles and car started to melt down including wipers coming on, radio on and off, door buzzers coming on, instrument panel light on and off, lights flashing, air bag warnings, etc. this continued for next couple miles until a complete shut down right at the railroad tracks! i barely got out of lane. after about 10 minutes, i got car to start and made it over the tracks to a parking lot. my husband came, called dodge dealership, they sent tow truck that took it to dealership. service manager called us 5 days later, said it was alternator and they would fix for $850. my husband said no, we're not paying because of recall issued on october 8th, that they needed to repair for free with better quality parts, and that i needed a rental until my car was fixed, or they could by my car back because we don't feel safe in it. service manager denied recall, said it was media hype, and that he would have sales manager call us. we did not hear back from dodge service department until february 10, 2015, when they informed rental company they were not paying bill for my rental for last 4 months, even though my car still not fixed and in same parking space at dealership it's been in since oct. 24. i called and made report to chrysler corp. and now is a case under special investigations, which was supposed to be settled in 2 business days. still waiting! shameful! *tr

Driving car and it started smoking. had to pull off the side of the road it started losing power. had to call a toll truck to take it to the dealership and they said i needed a new alternator. the car is a 2011 and only has 45,000 miles on it. this should not happen. *tr

Driving from philly to nj at 2am on sunday right before i entered the bridge lost power steering, abs, radio and battery saver light came on i had my wife and 3 kids with me after a minute or so started losing the headlights . i just wanted to get to jersey side and stop somewhere and call for help. i was very lucky because got to rt.73 highway and mt.laurel police spotted me and helped me a lot by taking us home safe. i had my car towed to the nearest garage and they told me the alternator died so i called the dodge dealership they said that no dodge chargers had that problem reported before i was "first". they were so rude on the phone and said just suck it up and pay $790 . well i got it fixed not at the dealership but at the gas station mechanic . i also paid $150 for towing and now i'm afraid that its going to fail again soon. i called the corporate right after i heard about the recall and they told me that my vin it is not recalled. they still investigating for more vin numbers. *tr

While driving, "battery saver mode" message came up. from here, i could smell something coming from under the hood. then the abs light and traction control light came on. was able to get it home, before trying to drive it again later after jumping it and it was completely dead. was able to finally jump it long enough to get out of my driveway and into the street so it could be towed. brought it to my dealership and they said it was a bad alternator. it is only a 2011 and has over 50k miles. *tr

Driving with my daughter in the car in heavy morning traffic and ivic message came on stating car was in battery saver mode. second time in 4 months this has happened (got alternator and battery tested and replaced the first time) so i immediately turned around to head back home. by the time i got near my neighborhood about 5 minutes later everything was shutting off and i could only go 25 mph with no power steering. about a minute or so before the ivic message i noticed a slight whining coming from my engine compartment. if i jump the battery, car starts but still in battery saver mode. *tr

While i was driving on a main street my car stalled and i smelled smoke, my doors automatically locked and i had smelled smoke, i freaked out and took my keyless remote battery out and put back in any my doors unlocked, so i got myself and kids out asap, i had to call a tow truck and they towed my car to the dealership, there they diagnosed that it was the alternator, i had to buy one which was $500 or a little more. *tr

Driving on the road at about 75 mph (the speed limit at the time) in the middle of nowhere texas, my electrical systems started to shut down. the first thing we noticed turn off was the audio system and it wouldn't turn back on, then the climate control system. i checked the messages on my dashes message center and it told me the vehicle was in battery saver mode. shortly thereafter (maybe another minute or two) the abs and traction control indicators came on and all my gauges (speedometer and whatnot) all dropped to zero. the car was still in motion and we were lucky enough to find a road to pull off at (though we were no where near anything at the time). at that point i noticed the power steering, locks, windows, and anything electric went on the car too. after we turned off the car, it would not restart. after dealing with chrysler and getting myself, my family, and my car back from midland to austin, it turns out the alternator went on it. this should not be an issue this early (approximately 26,000 miles) in the life of my car. hopefully this gets added to the ongoing investigation (nhtsa action number: pe14022) for this issue. *tr

Was driving and the power saver mode came on the car. saw smoke, checked the engine and the alternator was smoking. something needs to be done. this car is 3 years old with 60,000 miles on it. that is ridiculous. the car has not went through anything stenos. we are at a lost for words and then when called and asked about it there is nothing that can be done without further investigation. please investigate, there are too many complaints about this. this is costing over 800 dollars, this is ridiculous on a low mile low year car, right after the warranty goes out. please investigate and do something, thanks. *tr

Driving at 25 mph, warning lights came on for different functions. odd sound coming from motor. the information message alert lit up. checked it, and the message alert was "battery saver mode". odd smell (electrical) coming from the engine. parked, closed windows, shut the car off. went to restart car and it wouldn't start. had a friend try to jump with cables, and it didn't work. called for tow truck to come and take to dealer. i have a bumper to bumper lifetime warranty. dealer can't "look" at it until tomorrow. it has been almost 2 hours wait for tow truck,(promised to be here an hour ago.) *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 dodge charger. the contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 48,000.

I got the "battery saver mode" warning on my car. i looked it up on the internet and a lot of people were complaining about dodge chargers and there alternators. the next morning i called the dealer ship to see what they think it is and if i can get in so they can look at the car, they also said it could be the alternator but could not get me in until the next morning but said it should be safe to drive. they look up my warranty and it was out of warranty for the alternator...i only have 38,600 miles on my car!! i should not be dealing with thing like this on a 3 year old car! luckily i bought a portfolio warranty that covers it but with $100 deductible but the catch is i have to go to the dealer where i bought it from! when there is a dealer 2 miles from where i am and the one i bought it from is about 25 minutes away. so i make the appointment and go to work, by the time i get to work my radio stopped working and abs light turned on. i parked and smoke was coming from the alternator! i called the dealer back and told them what happen, they said i can bring it in now and leave it there and they will look at it the next day. so i have to leave work to take the car there and the car completely dies on the way there! i had to call a tow truck and get it towed all the way to the dealer. they were able to replace the alternator by the middle of the next day. but i have now had the car for 2 whole days and the battery saver mode just turned on again!!!!! so now in the morning i'm going to have to call the dealer again and see what to do now! replace another alternator!?!?!?!? this has to be a recall!! there should not be any of these problems on a car that is 3 years old and has less then 40,000 miles!!! this is ridiculous and i'm seriously looking at other cars to trade in for now! i am never buying dodge again!! oh and the dealer wouldn't give me a loaner car for free! *tr
