Problems with 2018 Chrysler Pacifica ENGINE

On average, the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 10 313 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2018 Chrysler Pacifica

I returned home from driving a half an hour in my vehicle and when i pushed the start/stop button to turn the vehicle off it would not go completely off. the engine turned off but the sensors and radio would not turn off. normally it shuts off when you open the door and it still would not work. so then i messed with things a bit and made sure all doors were shut. when doing so the back left door would not latch all of the way. it would go to shut and the open again before latching.

Came to full stop at a light on a 2 lane highway. there was no one in front of me and one care behind. almost immediately after stopping for the light, the engine stopped, the transmission indicator light flashed the light under "d" and the gauge cluster flashed multiple lights. i can only remember seeing fwc or fcw flashing but there were other lights. auto start/stop was not disabled so i was initially not surprised by the engine stopping at a light. to restart, i had to place transmission back in "p", hold the brake and push the ignition. i then, despite having our seat belts on, had to disengage the parking brake by pushing the button. this usually happens automatically when the vehicle is placed in "d". once we returned home, the driver's side power sliding door would not operate. we had to open it manually to get my son out. the passenger's side worked like it should. both these things have happened to my wife (the primary driver) several times and reported to the dealership. they have been unable to replicate the problem or fix it.

Vehicle was at red light when started to smell something burning then smoke from the hood and vents inside the van. then when the hood is popped tithe flames got worse. the fire started on the right rear side of engine compartment around the radiator reservoir.

The van stalls at all different speeds. losing all control ad having to coast off to the side of the highway because the car has completely lost power. when i am accelerating, the vehicle is jerking around 10-20 mph, almost like a violent jolt. (at times seems like someone is rear ending us) the dealership says that everything is functioning as it should be. this makes me extremely concerned for the safety of my family and my kids. this has happened numerous times. also the sliding doors open and close on their own. my 6yo was nearly caught in one as it closed. i have video of the car stalled in a parking lot as well.

Vehicle exhibited "unintended acceleration"; the engine and vehicle suddenly accelerated on it's own while making a slow (10 mph) left hand turn. vehicle lurched forward and accelerated. acceleration lasted for a few seconds after i applied the brakes but did stop accelerating at that point. i was able to stop just short of a parked car i was trying to park behind. this is the only time this has happened before or since the incident. note: i am an ex powertrain calibration engineer so i know unintended acceleration from my previous employment. also, my foot was not on the gas pedal when the incident happened. and there was no floor mat interference (pedal physically can't reach the floor).

2018 chrysler pacifica. consumer writes in regards to vehicle stalling. *ld the consumer stated the battery was dead upon purchase. the dealer replaced it. a week after purchasing the vehicle it would not start. it had power, but the key fob could not be detected. the sliding doors reopened after being closed. the vehicle applies the brakes when reversing or going forward as if to stop a crash. the vehicle jolts/lunges and rolls a little when shifting gears. the engine rattles for a few seconds after the vehicle was shut off. the vehicle stalled/idled and shut down while at a stop sign and in traffic. the dash displayed engine stop start system malfunction. *js

Purchased 2018 chrysler pacifica limited in march 2019. within 2 weeks, two electrical recalls and failure of safety locks and autistic 3yr locked in car. turned car on with ac to cool, took daughter out and put in carseat, closed door and driver door locked. had spare in house. serviced at dealership and told all fine. three weeks later, sunroof would not close, and daughter locked in car again for over 30 minutes. grandmother had to bring spare key to publix. service once again said all was fine. safety locks, we were told, would not lock if key was in car which it was. serious safety issue for my daughter and there has been times engine shut down. *as *tr

Power will be loss including radio frequently. when driving at low speeds such as in traffic the engine will stall and jerk.

Coming home from church, a neighbor was out washing his car, as he moved toward the road i began to apply the brakes and the engine sped up to a higher speed. after i stopped the car, i looked down to see my right shoe was on both pedals. this had happened three times before. my son went out and checked the brake fluid and found it at the minimum level. he topped it off to the maximum level. my son believes that will take care of the problem. but reporting it might be better for others. since i had taken it into chrysler a couple of weeks ago and they said they had preformed a 32 point safety inspection, i did not see how the could have missed the low brake fluid, or have not topped it off. it seems the brake pedal is up higher than the gas pedal by several inches when the car is first started, but after several miles - more than 11 miles - it loses the height it started with. the vehicle was moving at less than 20 mph on a subdivision street. this had happened three times before, while pulling into a parking place or driveway, moving at low speed. each tim after having driven a longer distance than normal. over 11 miles. the brake pedal had gone lower to the floor and was at or below the level of the gas pedal. if this is to be expected, the brake and gas pedal are much too close together, only 3 inches between them, and this is then a problem.

When stopped at a stoplight, my car used the stop/start function. when i tried to accelerate, the car stalled and wouldn't let me turn it back on or turn the dial to move it to neutral. it stayed like that for a couple minutes and then i was able to start it, but now i have a light on my dashboard indicating that the stop/start isn't available. i was traveling 500 miles from home on vacation with my family.

The vehicle has 9700 miles on the od. as it was slowing for a stop as it was still in motion the traction control light came on and the engine shut off forcing the vehicle to abruptly stop. the vehicle had to be placed into park and turned back on to continue.

Multiple engine stalls when slowing to turn or stop, at least 9 times. the engine dies, you have to come to a complete stop to be able to restart the engine. this has happened while turning, while coming to a stop sign or stop light and just while slowing down. one instance of the brakes and steering locking up as i tried to stop at a red light. i was not able to stop and ran through the red light. i had no steering or brakes. when i did come to a stop, i tried to back up to get out of the middle the road and the gear shift was also locked up. the van has a been in for service 5 times and 49 days so far and currently has been at the dealership service department since june 11. took van in 6/5/2019 to comply with recall v53 and on 6/11/2019 the engine stalled again. i have documents i wanted to upload but they exceeded the 5mb limit. also in the "affected parts" section i wanted to select "brakes" in addition to the steering, engine and electrical but i was not able to add another selection.

Electrical and sensor issues. when my 2018 pacifica is started in the morning i receive a fcw (front crash warning) after driving approximately one half mile and stopping at a stop light near my house. i have the gas saver on and my van will usually shut off. when i stop at the light, the console will flash fcw when no objects are in front or near me as well as two other censors flashing. the van completely shuts down and then flashes "start stop required". i then have to place the vehicle in park, turn it off, restart it, then shift back to drive all while in at an intersection. this has happened at least 12 times and creates a risk of being rear-ended. since we purchased the van in august 2018, we have had: the uconnect center replaced on september 7 2018, the radio improperly activated or turned off incorrectly completely draining the battery requiring tow and service on april 12 2019, and the fcw was supposedly repaired on may 21 2019. although it was "fixed" the fcw alert has occurred 3 times since it was returned less than 3 weeks prior.

On may 25, 2019, as i was driving on a highway at about 40 mph with two little children in the car, my chrysler pacifica suddenly stalled and the engine died. two error messages came up: one a picture of a battery and one a picture of a turtle. the car died in the middle of the highway and it was extremely dangerous, especially in rainy conditions. i had to wait for a tow truck in rain and in dangerous conditions to get it towed to the dealership. the engine would not engage even after being jump started.

I returned home and turned off my car and shut the garage door. my purse with my keys was still in the car. i came downstairs 45 minutes later and heard the car running in the garage. i don't know how long it was running with the garage door shut, but it terrified me. i have no idea how it was started. i did not use remote start, since the keys were in the car.

On 05-11-2019 my 2018 (purchased nov. 2018) chrysler pacifica touring l plus van was stationary in my driveway (7,000 miles). vehicle would not start. vehicle began giving erratic dash displays, for example it advised that the car was not in park. it advised that the gear shift need service. despite not ever turning on, the vehicle as clearly having a complete electrical meltdown. the windshield wipers engaged. then none of the buttons on the fob, nor in the car were responding. within a few minutes the entire car died. no electrical response. had it towed to dealership today. waiting to hear on diagnosis.

When driving and stopping at a signal, engine goes into auto start/stop, chimes with error, and must do a manual restart by placing into park. has done this many times and could be very dangerous if stopped in an intersection. the only remedy is to start engine and turn off auto start/stop.

On two occasions, the vehicle has stalled at a stop light with the auto stop/start disengaged. on both occasions, the vehicle information system said to put the vehicle into park and restart it. i've checked with the dealer and they have never heard of the issue before.

We bought the car as a certified used car from a dealership in february, 2019. the car is a 2018, and had 22,000 miles at time of purchase. the car first stalled in late march, 2019. it stalled while at a red light, and cars had to be directed around the car. my child was in the car with me at the time. an error message appeared with something regarding the stability control. since that first time, the car has stalled at a light 2 more times. we are bringing the car back to the dealer for service. when we called to let the dealer know the issue, they said they've never heard of this happening. i find that hard to believe with so many similar complaints. i am very concerned that this is a known issue that is not being addressed.

Vehicle auto shutdown and will not restart at stop light. lifting foot off brake pedal will not have the vehicle disable the fuel saving auto shutdown and vehicle will not restart. forward collision warning light comes on and audible alarms active. must do a complete restart of the vehicle engaging brake pedal and push button start.

Car turned off while driving on highway

Vehicle stalled multiple times requiring shift to park and manual restart. vehicle was at idle in left turn lane of major city road with 4 occupants. vehicle has stalled at low speed in parking lot immediately after stating to move from a stop with 4 occupants. *tr

On several occasions while driving, the vehicle has stalled. forcing us to put the car in park and restart the engine. this has happened pulling into busy intersections and once occurred on train tracks. my wife and i are afraid to drive our brand new mini van.

My 2018 chrysler pacifica car stopped while i was driving. i had slowed down to make a left turn and it shut itself off. it quickly flashed a message about stability control and then showed stop, start, restart required. the car was still in drive. when i tried pressing the brake it was very hard and wouldn't move. i put the car in park and tried shutting it off and restarting it, but couldn't. i had a line of cars behind me, including a school bus and put my hazards on. i'm not sure how many tries it took, but i was finally able to get it to start and drive home. i have since driven the car without incident but i am very nervous that it will happen again. it seems like a huge safety risk.

Problem occurs at slow speeds or when stopped. the car completely shuts off. then we have to quickly switch into park, restart, then switch into drive. this has happened at least 8 times while driving. it is extremely dangerous. chrysler said to turn of front collision warning collision until they have a solution. since that temp fix, the car fail 2 more times on 3/6/19. once while making a left turn it died before the turn was completed, and once more coming out of a parking lot turning onto a main road. this is extremely dangerous and needs to be rectified immediately before someone has a crash. the car just shuts off. the car is only a few months old and it has happened several times.

We have a 2018 pacifica that we bought new a year ago. our van currently has 8,000 miles on it. my wife received a warning about a battery fault while she was taking our kids to school. the van then shut off in morning rush hour while she was driving at around 40 mph. the vehicle lost all power and ability to safely steer and brake with the electric assist. she was able to slowly get the van to a stop on a side street. the van is at the dealer now and they have no idea what is wrong with it. i was told the battery appears to be totally flat, but if it was just a simple battery replacement, we would have had our van back by now.

Intermittently when stopped , the car stalls. messages flash saying "fcw unavailable" and "acc unavailable" "lanesense unavailable" service required. the car has to be restarted. i have had it at dealer several times and they cannot fix. it's dangerous as i have almost been rear ended at stop signs or stop lights since it's stalled. i happens usually right after stopping. there is no pattern but happens about 25% of the time i am driving.

On multiple occasions the vehicle has stalled out while waiting for stop lights and just in a stopped position. in order to restart the vehicle it had to be placed in park. it does start immediately however is a serious safety concern leaving us to wonder if this will occur during actual driving.

Engine randomly stalls. we've had this vehicle for approximately 8 months and it has randomly stalled more than 10 times regardless of the scenario (driving, stopped at a light, parked). the latest incident being today, 3/4/19. this is a serious safety concern based on it happening while driving with our children in the vehicle.

Automatic restart feature stalls the car after the feature turns off engine and driver tries to drive again. if car has not been running for a long time, then at first stop (stop sign or stop light) the automatic restart feature will turn off the engine as expected but when driver tries to drive again, the engine stalls. driver forced to put car into park and use start/stop button to completely restart the engine. this is a dangerous issue as the car stalls completely and puts driver at risk of getting rear-ended since car will not move when light turns green. there is no way to permanently disable this automatic restart feature, so driver must remember to do it manually by pushing a dash button with a on it.....else the car will stall at first stop.

Pacifica was coming to a stop after a military checkpoint and the vehicle stalled while coming to a stop. the speed was less than 30 miles per hour the vehicle showed a service electronic suspension and needed to be placed in park to restart. it did restart immediately.

Vehicle was briefly stopped in traffic at a light with electronic start-stop engaged. when foot was removed from the brake, the engine started back up momentarily then sputtered to a stop. the engine start/stop button and shift knob were unresponsive (could not shift gears). neutral override cord was pulled, but ineffective because electronic parking brake still seemed to be engaged. the vehicle could not be moved out of traffic into a safe location and had to be towed to dealership. heating and power windows turned off as well, and possibly the hazard lights were ineffective (unsure because it was unsafe to leave the vehicle and check).

Van will stall during low speed or idle. stability/traction control will flash and van will need to be restarted. has happened multiple times in intersections and once in stop and go highway traffic.

Twice now i have been driving and the car has turned itself off. i look at the dash and it gives and error about being in park sense mode. i took it to the dealer and they say i must have had a voltage spike but they can not reproduce the error so they cannot fix it. its pretty scary luckily no one was barreling up behind me when it happened.

When driving the van turned off completely & shut down in traffic. had to put it in park and restart the van then the van was stalling and did not run normal it was pulling like it was going to die again. in motion on the highway was scared had my 3 kids with me. this is not the first time that the van felt that it was going to die. week before it didn't want to get speeding while trying to enter the free way. it slowed down then caught speed. *tr

The van was in motion when i was driving and it just stopped on traffic very scary experience when on the freeway and van dieds and cars behind me. this is not the first time that something went wrong with the van i was driving a different day on freeway and the van slowed down on its own and felt like it was going to died but didn't. but yesterday it died and i had to put it on park then tried to turn back on.

Twice in the last week when slowing down for a stop light, the vehicle flashes a warning sign "stability control?" and then shuts off completely. then a display says "shift into park and restart vehicle". this is a serious safety issue. if this happens at a higher speed you have no control of the vehicle. i know there was a recall on 2017 models but obviously 2018 models have the same problem.

Sitting at stop light waiting for it to change when engine just turned off. didn't know what had just happened or what to do, afraid i would get rear-ended. light turned green and i had no power. i put van in park, pushed the ignition start button, van started and i was able to proceed in traffic. didn't know if problem was related to the feature where engine turns off when stopped in traffic, then turns back on when you press the gas. i pushed the button so engine wouldn't turn off until i got home safely. near zero outside temps and i thought vehicle had died. luckily, driver behind me was paying attention and didn't jump the gun when the light turned green or i definitely would have been rear-ended. apparently this is a problem that other pacifica drivers have experienced. it needs to be fixed before someone is hurt. makes me very uneasy to drive it not knowing when it might happen again. will take to dealer as soon as possible.

Engine turned off/stalled without warning while in drive going about 35 mph on a highway exit ramp. chimes started bonging and 'd' on dashboard started blinking. i was able to brake to a stop. msg appeared to put car in park to restart. car restarted immediately. this problem sounds similar to 2018 recall u87 for engine stalling, but my vin is not covered in recall. also, note the 2017 recall u01 for engine stalling. some consumers noted in their complaints that the "fix" did not work. this is very troubling!! obviously two consecutive year recalls for engine stalling does not inspire confidence that the problem has been adequately addressed. i do not feel safe in this car. see current reported complaints (for same problem) online: http://www.arfc.org/complaints/2018/chrysler/pacifica/engine/problem.aspx http://www.carproblemzoo.com/chrysler/pacifica/2018/engine-shut-off-without-warning-problems.php....*bf.. *tr

Vehicle stopped operating while driving. check engine light. chrysler states this 2018 chrysler pacifica e-hybrid needs a new transmission. it was purchased new. we put ~4k miles on the van prior to this incident.

The engine automatically stops when going 10 mph or below. a message comes up to stop/start restart required. this happens when i am in traffic or idling at a light. it is occurring more frequently. brought it to the dealer but they couldn't duplicate message so they did nothing. this is extremely dangerous. i read this was an issue in jan 2017 and 2018 with 2017. apparently there needs to be an engine control software update but because chrysler did not authorize this the service dept at the dealer will not do anything. extremely dangerous and can cause an accident to anyone driving. this is happening more frequently now on my car. it used to be only once today was three times in twenty minutes. ..*bf.. *tr *dt consumer experiencing engine stalls. *jb

Engine shuts off while driving, message displayed to turn off car and turn on again because of electrical failure. brakes lock and car stalls until vehicle is set back to park and restarted.

While stopped at a stop sign the vehicle's auto stop/start function disabled the engine as normal. when i lifted my foot off the brake to engage engine the car stalled and "service auto start/stop" displayed on screen. then the screen indicated to put the vehicle in park. after i put the vehicle in park i restarted the vehicle and operated normally. vehicle was purchased new and has 1,200 miles on it. i will be taking the vehicle to my dealer for assessment.

This happened on two occasions. i came to a complete stop, and the auto start stop shut the engine off like it's supposed to. however, when this happened a bunch of warnings came across my dash, saying certain safety features were disabled and the car wouldn't respond to the gas pedal. i had to put the car into park and restart my car. i took it to the dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong. it happened again after having it back for three days, and they said there was an 'update' for it. however when i picked up my car they didn't give me any paperwork to sign.

The car stalls while driving. this continues to occur after the nhtsa recall 18v-332 has been completed. the dealer cannot reproduce the problem.

Engine stalled during the stop/start function while idling at stoplights, and vehicle has to be restarted. dashboard shows a quick message about electronic stability control, engine completely stalls out, and then shows a message to put vehicle in park and to restart the vehicle. vehicle has 5,300 miles. this occurred on the chrysler dealership *loaner vehicle* (a 2018 chrysler pacifica) while dealership is trying to troubleshoot same problem on owner's 2018 chrysler pacifica. returned loaner vehicle to dealer for a different car.

The car has lost power on several occasions. when stopped at a stop light/stop sign car shuts off completely and loses power. i brought the car to the dealer last week, they completed an update- however just today the car lost power on a main road which happens to be right in front of the dealer. i pulled in completely shaken as i had my daughter in the car and cars were coming from behind not realizing i am stalled in the road. i have left the car at the dealer. it is so dangerous and scary as i bought this car as a family car and i can't feel comfortable driving it.

While stopped at a traffic light in our town the van shut off and the electrical system starting sending me messages on the dashboard that the lane sense was not operating. i had my foot on the brake and tried several times to move the gear selector to park but it was locked in place. the ignition said it was in the run position which indicates the car should be running but it was not. the brake pedal was firm too, as it would be when the car is off. finally after several attempts i was able to move the gear knob to park and then restart the car. i could have easily been rear ended, this was very scary and unacceptable on chrysler's part.

While driving - slowing to a stop for a stoplight, my car's computer screens started flashing various warnings to restart the engine. at this point, the car was not responsive to the gas pedal / would not move and the power steering was also not functional. i had to put on my hazards, put the car in park and turn off and turn back on the engine.

During driving the van will shut off. this happens intermittently but consistently 1-3 times per week. most often the vehicle will shut off while at a stop. this happens with both the auto start/stop feature on and off. when releasing the break to resuming driving, the vehicle is off and warning lights on the dash display. "service stabilitrac, abs, etc. it then displays the ignition icon that says depress brake and start vehicle. the vehicle must be placed in park, then restarted. this same event has happened on multiple occasions while driving down the highway at 50 mph. no power steering, brake booster or nothing. chrysler is aware of these issues in the 2018-19 vehicles and we have been dealing with them for 3 months, however they have no resolution proposal and feel it ok to keep this type of liability on the road......not acceptable.
