Problems with 2005 Chrysler Pacifica ENGINE

On average, the 2005 Chrysler Pacifica starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 118 472 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2005 Chrysler Pacifica

My engine sub frame is heavily rusted creating a dangerous situation for my motor to falls or loose control of my vehicle putting my wife and child in danger. *tr

I have a 2005 chrysler pacifica and i was experiencing problems with a clicking noise and shifting coming from underneath the front end of my car. upon inspection by my mechanic it became clear that the "engine cradle" or subframe was completely rotted through with visible corrosion. upon further investigation, i discovered that this "engine cradle" corrosion problem has been acknowledged by chrysler and an extended warranty was issued to repair this part for 2004 and 2005 pacifica's. extended warranty letter id is: 0004617/#45543/x26...however, when i contacted chrysler, i was informed that based on the vin # of my car, i did not qualify for chryslers extended warranty for this issue, the letter chrysler issued for this extended warranty clearly states that it covers 2004-2005 chrysler pacifica's, and even though i fall within the model year, geographical region, and the 10yr/150,000mile guidelines of extended warranty, chrysler claims that my 2005 was not manufactured within some narrow manufacturing window to qualify for this extended warranty.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chrysler pacifica. the contact stated that the dealer was servicing the vehicle and advised that the engine cradle was rusted. the technician also advised that the engine cradle would need replacing because there was a risk of the engine becoming detached and falling from the vehicle. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure and current mileage was 92,000.

Our 2005 chrysler pacifica touring model did not pass a state vehicle safety inspection because of extensive corrosion holes and frame rust. the engine cradle support has rust holes and is severely weakened, and the areas below the rocker panels underneath the car have rusted through. the vehicle was purchased new by my father, and has always been garaged and well maintained. the car has only 77,100 miles on it, and yet now is considered structurally unsafe to drive. researching online, i found that chrysler knew of the unusual corrosion problems with this vehicle. they acknowledged the rust problem by quietly issuing an extraordinary "extended 10 year / 150,000 mile warranty" for pacifica model years 2004-2005. they subsequently amended this warranty to limit their responsibility to the front engine cradle only (reference: x26, warranty bulletin dated march 16, 2012), and further reduced their exposure by only providing this warranty coverage to vehicles manufactured between february 23, 2004, to march 31, 2004 - an implausibly short time frame given their acknowledged corrosion problem. the chrysler customer assistance center told me they would not provide any assistance, since the manufacture date for this car was june, 2005. it is inexcusable that a well-maintained 2005 vehicle with only 77,000 miles could be rendered structurally unsafe due to corrosion. it is absurd to suggest that their corrosion problem only affected one part manufactured only within a 36 day window. having spoken with several mechanics and insurance adjusters, extensive underbody panel rust and frame corrosion are extremely common with this model year. structural corrosion is a known defect with this car. it's a huge financial loss for us. it also a dangerous safety "time bomb". they know it is. chrysler should assist in fixing these vehicles quickly, or be forced to recall them. *tr

Excessive rusting of engine cradle. possibility of front end of subframe falling out of the car. *tr

My chrysler pacifica was diagnosed with a bad engine cradle, cradle is rusted, has a long rust hole about 7 inches long, will need a cradle replacement, frame is unsafe. some 04's-05's were recalled for same problem, mine wasn't included in the recall for some reason, i'm having the same problem everyone else is. contacted chrysler and said there wasn't anything they could do for me, its definitely a safety issue. *tr

Tl-the contact owns a 2005 chrysler pacifica. the contact stated the engine cradle had rusted out. the vehicle had not been taken to a dealer or independent mechanic. the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the problem. the vin was not available. the approximate failure was 146,000.lj

Add me to the list for, "went in for routine work" and came out paying $2000.00 because my engine cradle was rusting out. no help from chrysler, something needs to be done about it, no salvage part was available, and who would want to put a used rusty engine cradle in anyway. an engine cradle is not a part that anyone should ever have to replace in their lifetime. my repair was only $2000.00 but that is because i only had to add 15% to the cost as i work at a mechanical shop. the part alone was still over $1200.00...sorry, but i think it's bs !!!!!!!!!!!!! i do alot of highway driving with my grandchildren in the vehicle, what would i of done if the engine fell out while i was driving ????????? *tr

I wanted to bring to your attention a safety condition with certain years on the chrysler pacifica. many of the pacificas engine cradles are severely rusted; to the point of if a break occurs the engine will fall out of the vehicle. this issue is mainly on years 2004-2005. (i own a 2005 model with severe rusted engine cradle.) the estimated cost of this repair is between $2,500 and $3,000. i have contacted chrysler several times about this safety issue, the 1st time was nov of 2013 with the most recent being 4/1/2014. chrysler just says ?we?re looking into it?. (ref case# 24293830) i have contacted the minnesota attorney general who sent a letter to chrysler, but they declined coverage on my pacifica. i have also filed a complaint with the national highway traffic safety administration. chrysler has acknowledged this issue by extending the warranty on certain build dates, (see letter below): checkout an nbc news report on this issue: www.nbcchicago.com/investigations/minivan-owners-want-chrysler-to-concede-rust-problems-241535881.html. my vehicle has been diagnosed by two mechanics, one of which is roseville chrysler-jeep. and both agree that the engine cradle must be replaced. my vehicle is in perfect condition. the rusted engine cradle would never be noticed by a common person. someone could have this issue and not know it unless a mechanic would happen to notice it. luckily mine did! in light of the recent gm issues with ignorance of the power steering issue i would think that chrysler would try and get ahead of this serious safety issue. The engine cradle is rusting and the engine will soon fall down to the ground if not replaced cost + $2,000 +. *tr

Vehicle was submitted to authorized new york inspection station for yearly state-required inspection. vehicle failed inspection. inspector cited multiple holes in the "cradle" frame member supporting engine, steering, and suspension parts. "cradle" was completely perforated in several places by corrosion, and showed signs of additional corrosion which would ultimately lead to more holes. cradle was judged structurally compromised. inspection station consulted ny dmv and it was determined and reported to me that vehicle is unsafe, and that replacement of cradle would be required to return vehicle to service and to pass new york state inspection. it was explained to me that a minor impact -- such as encountering a pothole at speed, or hitting an object with the frame or body of the vehicle -- could cause collapse of the front end structure of the vehicle, loss of steering control, loss of the engine from the engine compartment, collapse of the suspension system, and potential resultant fire, explosion, and injury or loss of life to occupants of vehicle or others in the vicinity. *tr the consumer stated the vehicle left his wife stranded. she was unable to steer or brake while driving many times, the previous year. on one occasion while driving, the engine light illuminated, and the vehicle just stopped, leaving his wife in the middle of the road. the consumer replaced a faulty sensor. updated 03/27/14

While in for repairs, our mechanic diagnosed that the engine cradle of our 2005 chrysler pacifica touring awd sports tourer 4-dr has rusted almost completely through and advised that the vehicle is unsafe to drive without immediate repairs. according the mechanic, the engine cradle supports both the engine and the front steering/suspension assembly components, that could cause the driver to lose control upon failure, and cause a crash. after conducting research on various websites, i found that numerous consumers/owners of pacifica models manufactured between 2004 and 2006 are reporting this issue and chrysler is aware of this specific problem and listed it as a possible defective part. in response, chrysler has issued an extended warranty, limited to certain states (which they refer to as 'salt belt states") covering repairs for this problem. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where we purchased it, examined and submitted a request to chrysler for coverage, which was denied. we were told that our vehicle was not covered because we did not live in one of these defined "salt state zones". despite offering to provide evidence from kydot and local county transportation offices verifying that our area does in fact experience a high volume of roadway salt use, chrysler continues to deny extending any coverage for the affected vehicle. given the seriousness of the problem, and the large number of consumers potentially affected, i would ask that nhtsa & odi conduct an independent investigation and negotiate with chrysler to broaden the coverage to include any pacifica exhibiting signs of this defect. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chrysler pacifica. the contact stated that the engine cradle, frame and cross member was found to be severely corroded with holes. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 130,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chrysler pacifica. the contact stated that while driving 55 mph, the vehicle shook with the illumination of the abs light. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 130,000.... updated 10-17-13 *bf when braking the car started shaking. steering was lost, and the abs light illuminated. upon inspection it was found the front engine cradle had rusted so to the point there were big holes. the only thing holding the engine cradle together was the motor mounts.

I have a 2005 chrysler pacifica and i was experiencing problems with a "clicking noise" coming from underneath the front end of my car. upon inspection by my mechanic it became evident that the "engine cradle" which holds up engine was completely rotted through with about 80% of visible corrosion (i really wish i could actual attach pictures of corrosion provided to me by my mechanic). upon further investigation, i discovered that this "engine cradle" corrosion problem has been acknowledged by chrysler and an extended warranty was issued to repair this part for 04 and 05 pacifica's. extended warranty letter id is: 0004617/#45543/x26...however, when i contacted chrysler, i was informed that based on the vin # of my car, i did not qualify for chryslers extended warranty for this issue (10 yrs or 150,000 miles) - the letter chrysler issued for this extended warranty clearly states that it covers 2004-2005 chrysler pacifica's, and even though i fall within the model year, geographical region, and the 10yr/150,000mile guidelines of extended warranty, chrysler claims that my 2005 was not manufactured within some narrow manufacturing window to qualify for this extended warranty. in closing, unfortunately, due to financial constraints, and the costly nature of this repair (2-3k), i have no choice but to drive this car the way it is at the moment - i do understand that it is clearly unsafe to drive this car and it probably shouldn't be on the road - however, i do have a valid state inspection sticker from previous year, so my car is "legal to drive", and i really have no choice but to continue to utilize this car until i can come up with a resolution (all i can do at this point is keep my fingers crossed and pray that i don't cause any harm to myself or anybody else). what should i / can i do to next? can you please help me and advise accordingly. thank you sincerely [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Was informed by our mechanic that the front crossmember/engine cradle/k-frame had rusted through and that this was a common problem with this make/model/year vehicle. chrysler issued a recall due to this defect, but it only covered manufacturing dates up to march 31, 2004 and our vehicle was manufactured in june of 2004. i have seen that this continued to be a very common problem with vehicles after the march manufacture date and called chrysler to see what could be done as this is a very expensive repair of a known issue that had been recalled on other vehicles. chrysler stated that this was not covered by recall and there was nothing they were willing to do to assist us. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chrysler pacifica. the contact stated that a rattling noise was heard from the front end of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for an unrelated repair when the contact was advised that the engine cradle was severely corroded with holes. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 94,000 and the current mileage was 96,000.

I recently took my 2005 chrysler pacficia to the shop to have the pulleys changed on the engine for the serpentine belt, and new tires and alignment. when the car was on the lift, my mechanic pointed out to me that the engine cradle is rusted and will need to be replaced at a cost of $5000. the car only has 94k miles on it. this seems to be a wide spread issue. i am the 2nd owner, the 1st was a lease through chrysler and i purchased the car from a local chrysler dealer in 2008. going to start contacting chrysler and the attorney generals office in ma to see what can be done since there is no recall on this. *jb

I was told when i took my car in for an oil change that the subframe was rusted out & that this was a safety issue. i would need to get this fixed or the engine/transmission could fall out. my car has always been stored in a garage. there is no way a car of this caliber should have a problem like this. it isn't even something that our service guy has seen on very old cars. was quoted @ $4200 for new one & around $1200 for used. my repair shop ordered 6 of them before they could find one that wasn't also rusted out. of course they got more expensive as it went along. very disappointed in chrysler saying that it wasn't covered & they wouldn't stand by there product/defect.

2005 chrysler pacifica 107000 miles rusted engine cradle. garage kept and serviced only at a chrysler dealership, service dept never told me the engine cradle was extremely rusted and cracked. after several calls and emails to chrysler corporation they refused to work out any financial assistance on repair bills.*jb

While driving on the freeway i glanced in my rear-view mirror and noticed smoke coming from out the back of my pacifica. i proceeded to exit the freeway at the nearest exit and the car jerked and made a noise. i told my two daughters who were in the car with me not to panic and then drove to the nearest gas station. i assumed the car was overheating and when i pulled up to the pump to put in coolant, someone in the car next to me told me my car was on fire. three good samaritans pushed my car away from the gas pump, the fire department was called, and i watched the front end of my car burst into flames. the only salvageable part of the car was the rear area. the fire department hosed it down with water and had to use an ax to break open the hood of the car. the car was a total loss and i have contacted chrysler who will send someone out to investigate the cause. i am awaiting on a response from them currently. *tr

I was driving back from a picnic with my family, going home my car just stopped white smoke was pouring out of the tailpipeand smelt gas really bad it was a horrible experience but my main problem is i only have had this car sine february 19 2013 and so i called my insurance company and had it towed to my home.i called my warranty company they said bring it to the nearest chrysler dealership and have it looked at so i did in the mean time i check to see any recalls on my vehicle and there is one for the fuel module and power train so i got a phone call from the person that i was speaking with he said my car caught on fire and now i need a new engine this is a 5000.0 dollar engine that i don't have now my warranty said they were not going to cover it and the guy i am financing the car said for me to eat the loss well i am very unhappy right now because i have no car and no answers to why this happened i also don't want anyone else to go through this kind of thing thank god my family was not in the car when it caught on fire or there would be more serious consciences if anyone could please contact me in trying to help me figure out what happened that would be great everyone i talk to said that chrysler should be able to help me. i am not looking to have to bring in a lawyer or anything like that i would just like to know how would you feel if it happened to you and if possible how to restore my faith in chrysler again. *tr

Took car to be inspected and was told the engine cradle was rusting out and the car would not pass inspection. dealer quoted me $2,000 to replace; got second opinion and paid $1,700 to have the cradle replaced. just discovered this website (09/2014), otherwise would have filed this complaint earlier. seeing the number of complaints on this same issue on this website makes me feel chrysler should reimburse me for the money i spent to have this repair done. *tr

Sub-frame is totally rotted out!!!!!!!!!!! *tr

The subframe (which holds up the engine) has thoroughly rusted through creating the danger of the engine and transmission falling from the frame. i am told the car is unsafe to drive. chrysler has acknowledged a defect in materials used to construct cars in february and march of 2004 and has extended the warranty to 150,000 miles for those vehicles. as mine was produced 4 months later they are denying any liability and refusing any assistance. the defect is identical to one that is covered on cars made 4 months prior , and they have been unable to provide any documentation showing the material used on my vehicle is not from the defective batch. i may have defective parts but they cannot provide a method to identify those defective parts. chrysler is unwilling to even examine the vehicle, instead using the vin as their only reference as to coverage. i found it interesting that when i referenced others receiving assistance outside the parameters of the extended warranty i was told that based on customer loyalty there may be assistance for some but it was not available to me. i am concerned that customer loyalty plays a role in the safety of their (past) customers. i'm not sure how many people expect their frame to fail in 8 years but this could be a major safety factor for both passengers and any vehicle around them when an engine falls from a car. how many complaints are needed before action is taken? *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chrysler pacifica. the contact stated that while receiving a repair at a private mechanic, the mechanic noticed that the engine cradle was corroded. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure and current mileage was 115,000.

Driving down the road the car began to shake uncontrollable. i pulled over and turned the car off and turned it back on to see if that rest something. it did nothing, i drove the car 3 miles very slowly to the auto repair shop. they told me 3 of the motor mounts are broke, which caused the engine to move and rest upon the front axles. they said that is a culprit of the car shaking. *tr

Driving down the street and the car started shaking and then something sounded like it snapped and the steering wheel was almost locked and could not steer. had it towed to the mechanics and he said the under frame and the brackets attached from the chasis to the frame holding up the engine had broken off. i got home looked online and found out that there are a lot of complaints about rusting in the under frame and that it is a very unsafe condition. *tr

a week ago i smelled an awful burning smell coming from my 2005 chrysler pacifica. i took it to the mechanic for investigation and repairs needed. the car needed an alternator, water pump and serpentine belt. while they were fixing this problem i told them to investigate the rattling noise coming from the frontend. they found that the engine cradle was rusting away. the garage suggested that i contact chrysler as this is a known problem with pacificas but it has not been recalled. i did my research and found that there are extended warranties being offered for this issue. i called chrysler directly and they told me because i was the second owner of the vehicle and they didn't know how the vehicle was treated and because of the mileage, they would not assist me in any way. keep in mind i am a student and now have a car that is unsafe and chrysler could care less!! the fight does not end here. please contact me if you are having the same problem and what your outcome has been. *tr

November 10, 2012 took my car in for shaking-mechanic stated front motor mount broken-repaired 11/13/2013. april 28, 2013 drove car out of town approximately 280 miles speed 65 mph. car began to violently shake 20 miles before i reached my destination. car was taken to a mechanic. they stated my front motor mount was broken-was repaired again. june 28th, 2013 car began to shake again in town speed around 35 mph is at the mechanic now. they called july 1, 2013 and stated the front motor is broken. *tr

Had our 2005 pacifica in for routine maintenance at local dealer. they "notified" us that the engine cradle had cracking. we checked with chrysler if there was a service bulletin or recall on this 7 yr old car and were told no. we then searched on the internet and found a letter dated 11/9/10, written by chrysler, to the owner of a'04-05 age pacifica, informing them the warranty period on their front engine cradle had been extended to 10 yrs or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first. the warranty was extended to vehicles in areas of high road salt usage, as they may experience engine cradle corrosion resulting in a "driveability vibration and/or shake". we live and bought our car, in minnesota which is a state of "high road salt usage" but chysler will not back the warranty extension to us because the car's first owner was in nevada (we are the 2nd owner). we feel the letter written by chrylser clearly shows they are aware and admit the engine cradle in this car is subject to corrosion but they will not fix the problem. this denial puts the driver, passengers and other vehicles on the road, at clear risk of incident. chrysler needs to issue a recall to fix admitted and very serious problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chrysler pacifica. the contact stated that after inspecting the vehicle, he noticed that the engine cradle sub frame was completely corroded. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician verified the failure and deemed the vehicle unsafe to drive. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was not included in any recalls. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 83,000 and the current mileage was 90,100.

While turning into the bank parking lot at 10mph the car just stalled. i was unable to brake or steer out the way. when gas gauge reads empty i am unable to fill the tank with gas as it begins to spill back out. gas gauge reads 1/2 full when it is really empty? miles to empty sensor incorrect therefore i have no idea when i need gas. driver side exterior headlamp seems dimmer than the other lamp. after repairing the entire front end(suspension) still sounds like the front end is going to fall apart when driving on ohio roads. felt it was necessary to document as i do not feel safe in this car. *tr

I was pulling into a left hand parking spot when the vehicle stalled/completely shut off. dashboard lights were still on. i was able to coast backwards down a slope and back into another open parking spot. i had no power steering, and brakes were very hard to depress. i looked up the problem on the internet and looked up open recalls. i found a recall similar to what happened, but when i called both daimler-chrysler and a local chrysler dealership and gave the last 8 characters of my vin, they informed me there were no open recalls for my vehicle. from what i researched, this might happen several times and i am quite concerned with my safety. *tr

Experiencing a vibration/shaking in the front end of the vehicle. brought the vehicle to my local mechanic and it was discovered that the k-frame assembly that holds the engine is completely rotted out. my mechanic advised me that this is a serious safety issue and should be covered by a recent tsb put out by chrysler on 3/16/12, number 13-001-12. however, upon reading the tsb, it only covers those vehicles made from 2/23/04 - 3/31/04. my vehicle was manufactured in may 2004. i called chrysler directly and they told me because i was the third owner of the vehicle and they didn't know how the vehicle was treated and because of the high mileage, they would not assist me in any way. i filed a report with the nh attorney general's office. i then received a phone call from chrysler's claims investigation division. they offered to pay for one part which cost $1,550 (front cross member). i did not accept her offer as the cost to repair my vehicle in full with all necessary parts and labor totals $2,362.07. my claim was then referred to the chrysler business center who would make a final decision as to whether or not they would repair my vehicle. i emphasized that this was deemed a safety issue by my mechanic. i also spoke with a local chrysler service center and they informed me that they had seen 6 of these same repairs on my exact vehicle within the past 12 months and that this should be deemed a recall through the manufacturer. on september 24, 2012, i received a copy of a letter from chrysler to the nh attorney general's office stating that my vehicle was "purchased used and is beyond any warranty on the vehicle. as such chrysler group llc will not be participating in any repair consideration. *tr
