We have classified the 167 complaints from 2003 Chevrolet TrailBlazer about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
Takata recall i have a 2003 chevrolet trailblazer and my suv was parked in the yard and i went to go to the store and opened my door and found the truck was full of smoke! my driver seat had caught on fire just sitting there. not even cranked! it destroyed the seat and the top of the suv and the roof melted all over the truck.
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet trailblazer. when the vehicle was started, the instrument panel gauges operated intermittently. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the ignition switch and instrument cluster failed. the manufacturer and dealer were not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown.
The instrument cluster has quit working
I have a heavy fuel runoff , from my fuel tank. even if the engine is only ran for a minute. also, my headlights go out whenever they feel like doing so,while driving
My daughter was driving locally yesterday 7/1/18 and making a right hand turn at a slow speed. she lost control and collided with another vehicle in oncoming traffic. she was injured. the cars brake lights had just gone out and the blower is going on and off. i assume this is an electrical problem for which my vin is not displaying a recall. there is now damage to the wheel and rear drivers side fender, clearly displaying that the vehicle spun out of control, based on the 2 vehicle impact points.
2003 chevy trail blazer, at engine start up, dash lights and gauges do not come on, turn key off and back on, dash panel (cluster) still does not function. test drove to see if dash would come on, it did not. parked tblazer, tried starting again, still noting. did this procedure 5 times and still dash not working. parked tblazer in driveway, went out to start tblazer an hour later at dash worked. currently a driving safety hazard as the dash cluster is not working properly, only intermittent. dash cluster recall
For the last 3 years, every part of my instrument panel seems to work intermittently. at times while driving, the speedometer will show me doing 40 mph over my actual speed, or will show me doing 120 while i am sitting still. the oil pressure will sometimes show that there is no pressure at all, or the temp is as far as it can go on the hot side. all of these issues disappear after a while, and then function normally. they do not seem to be tied together, because at times several instruments are working fine, but 2 others are not.
Multiple gauges on the instrument panel are malfunctioning. the tachometer is reading 5,000 rpm when the vehicle was in park, and 7,000 rpm when going 15 mph. when i turn the car off the gauge sits at 2,000. the speedometer is clicking up (not a smooth transition to the correct speed). and it showing a lesser speed then i am going. when i turn the car off the speedometer shows it is going 10 miles per hour but will slowly drop down to zero. both of these malfunctions could are a huge safety concern. i had to pull over on the highway while the instrument panel was showing 7,000 rpm, afraid i was going to break down and ruin my car.

Speedometer and gauges do not work.
The dashboard cluster malfunctions. the first time it went out, the fuel guage and oil pressure guage stopped working and all other guages went out one by one soon after. we had a new gm cluster installed by the gm dealership at a cost of $600. this time, all guages stopped working and the alert lights stay on. (i.e. service 4wd, seat belt, service engine, brake and abs) other gm vehicles with this same cluster have been recalled but not the 2003trailblazer.
Travelling to work on 5/5/2016 @ 30mph vehicle completely shut down. luckily pulled to side road. was unable to start no power to ignition circuit, locked in park. towed to repair shop & replaced faulty ignition switch @ cost of $300.00. very dangerous situation!
Takata recall we just purchased this car from my husband's deceased mother's estate and it had a recall on the lighting inside and outside tail lights. the vehicle has 83 thousand miles on it and the vehicle rear lights are not working when i brake only one that is the third light on top of car. gm (chevrolet) i live on a very limited income and due to disability as well. my income is 1330 a month. how can i get this fixed? they want to charge me for diagnostics, as i stated we fixed it once it seems to be that it may get hot and blows fuses and then i have no idea i have no tail lights this is very dangerous and someone could rear end me and kill themselves and or myself. please help me in understanding are they responsible to fix their defects as they did it once when it was recalled and we also just bought this car. paid about 5 thousand for it. excellent condition. other than the lighting system not working only on and off. i have not had an accident but i do not want to have a accident. i find it unfair that they don't want to fix the problem unless they are paid because apparently it is a problem that is and will recur. we have actually fixed the problem once but apparently something is wrong that we cannot secure the issue properly. kindest regards [xxx]. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Takata recall was driving down the highway doing bout 70mph and i hear a nosie on the roof and then i saw my whole 3rd break light asmbley break off and fly into the air and almost hit the car in back of me this can cause a major accident if it fly's off and hit a car in back of you and i was doing research online and saw its a common problem with these suv its a poor design and needs to be recalled before somebody dies.
Instrument cluster gadge stepper motors all are bad. have read hundreds of other trailblazer owners complain of the same. also the ignition switches are very faulty.
My wife started to drive the car and came in and said that the guages stopped working, i went out to see, turned the ignition on a couple of times and they came on and in about 30 seconds they went off and are still not working. the car was in the driveway at 2666 madison 248 fredericktown mo. it has the same as the ones that are included in other 2003 recalls but the trailblazer hasn't had as many complaints. i would like to file one.
All of my gauges including fuel gauge, tachometer, and speedometer have stopped working. they will work some days and then others the gauges are all out of whack. it seems to occur especially when it is cold out. i am very frustrated that this is happening. i realize that my vehicle is older, but i do appreciate working gauges!!!
I went to pick up my grandson who lives approximately 1 mile away, drove back home making it 2 miles. upon parking in the driveway we both smelled something burning and noticed smoke coming out from under the hood. the ignition was switched off. upon opening the hood i discovered the fuse box smoldering and melting away, so i quickly used a wrench to disconnect the battery terminals. before doing so i noticed that the headlights were still on but growing dimmer by the minute. the vehicle is not in drivable condition.
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet trailblazer. while driving at a high speed, the speedometer displayed an incorrect reading. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the speedometer needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 135,000.
The rpm gauge and speedometer have quit working on the instrument panel. the blower motor switch has gone bad and the ac blower will not work.
I purchased my 2003 chev trailblazer new in 2003. i have never had any problems with it. it was parked in my driveway and i just went outside and unlocked it to put something in the vehicle and locked it back. about an hour or so later, i heard the horn start to blow but the keys were hanging up inside the house. i went out to see what the problem was and the vehicle started trying to crank on its on several times. then i smelled something and raised the hood and the fuse box located under the hood was melting. we disconnected the battery but it had already melted the box by that time. i had it towed to the dealership but they didn't know if there was a recall or not. i need for someone to tell me why a vehicle would do something like that when i was not even driving it at the time and if hopefully there is some kind of recall because i can't afford what they are telling me it will take to fix it. they said it destroyed all three wiring harnesses. ??
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet trailblazer. the contact stated that the air conditioner light, rear brake light, and rear driver side tail light malfunctioned. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the technician diagnosed that the lights malfunctioned due to electrical issues with the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 65,000.
Turning the key in the ignition, the car does not start and the key cannot be removed from the ignition. it is stuck in the on position, the wheel does turn but the shifter cannot be taken from the park position. car is being towed today to aaa for assessment and repair. i found no recall but am concerned with the stuck ignition in the on position and the key not being removable. *tr
The speedometer is no longer reporting the correct vehicle speed. i may indicate 50mph while the vehicle is actually going 20mph, but it is not the same each time the vehicle is driven. the is the same problem that has been widely reported on many other gm models. *tr
Speedometer stopped working. did research and this happens alot in this vehicle and year. *tr
Fuel gauge and speedometer have stopped working. *tr
The mileage on the trailblazer does not light up or any info on the instrument panel
I was driving in the left lane on interstate highway 290 (youngman highway) at about 65 m.p.h. when smoke began wafting from the area where the steering column meets the dashboard. i took immediate evasive action, pulled onto and off the shoulder onto the grass, shut the engine off, ran to the barrier fence and watched to see if vehicle was going to burst into flames. after calling aaa, about ten minutes had elapsed without further smoke so i assumed i could drive to the next exit ramp at colvin blvd. (about 1,000 feet away) and off to a wendy's parking lot where i waited for a aaa flatbed truck. my suv was flatbed towed to my dealership, fuccillo chevrolet on grand island, where the problem was diagnosed as a faulty ignition switch, code number c0379. total cost of repair was$222.66. it would be nice to be reimbursed for this expense. though no visible fire was observed, the smoke was a clear sign of problem that was so hot it caused oxidation of material into visible smoke. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet trailblazer. the contact noticed a strong burning odor emitting from the vehicle. the key was removed from the ignition, but the vehicle failed to power off. the contact also stated that the interior lighting illuminated independently. the contact disconnected the battery and the vehicle failed to power off. the contact discovered that the fuse box was burning and disconnected all the fuses to avoid a fire. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 149,000. updated 10/09/14*lj updated 3/26/2015 *js
Electrical problems in the instrument panel (dashboard). all gauges intermittently quits working, on startup, sitting running or in motion. tachometer never reads correctly. can occasionally get gauges to reset by clicking ignition back and forth between run and start positions. i know of 5 other vehicle's that are having similar problems.
One day i woke up and got in my car to go to work and before i left i noticed my gauges were messed up. the abs symbol, the parking break symbol, and the low battery lights all were on and my temperature gauge was at zero and still is. the gas gauge is at zero the battery and oil gauges are all placed at zero. i checked all my fuses found a couple bad ones and replaced them and the problem is still not fixed. the car still drives. but i am fearful of a shut down in the middle of the road with it acting like this. *tr
The instrument cluster on the 2003 trailblazer malfunctions, causes the speedometer to stop working and you can't tell how fast your going. the malfunctions also occur with the temperature, oil, and gas gauge. very dangerous not knowing how fast your going. the vehicle needs to be recalled. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet trailblazer. the contact stated that she was able to remove the key out of the ignition while the vehicle was in reverse. no warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was restarted and resumed normal operations. the failure recurred on two separate occasions. the manufacturer was contacted and did not offer a remedy. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 140,000 and the current mileage was 150,000.
While driving down the road, my car shut off and i almost drove off the road because all of the lights shut off and i lost control of my power steering and brakes. *tr
Stopped along interstate for gas last night. started the vehicle after filling up and the instrument panel would not illuminate, the radio was dead, the a/c was blowing hot air on high fan (which i could not turn down or off), the interior lights were out and the brake lights / tail lights failed to illuminate. restarted the vehicle 3 times with no change. placed the vehicle in gear to move to a parking spot and everything started working again. drove remaining 70 miles down the interstate w/o further issue. drove vehicle to work and home today. pulled into driveway, put vehicle in park and got out to open garage door. got back in vehicle, put it in gear and ran into the same problem from last night. this vehicle's electrical system has been wacky from the day i purchased it brand new. a/c or heat goes out intermittently, instruments quit working, battery suddenly drains, windshield wipers come on by themselves (even after the recall work), cruise control disengages for no reason, headlights/taillights fail, etc. service tech's willingly admit there is an issue with the electrical system, but gm will not acknowledge it nor issue a recall. i should have gotten rid of the [xxx] thing along time ago, but my wife loves it because of the room. i hope it doesn't wind up killing her one day. *tr information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Instrument panel not working. tachometer get stuck. *tr
Was driving on the highway to lansing when my check engine light came on and i lost all power and guage function.i began to hear a loud howling noise, pulled off at the exit went to the repair shop in portland, mi where my wheel hub exploded in their hand on the passenger side. the fan clutch has completely stopped working witch caused the vehicle to overheat, and loose all power and my 4 wheel drive locked right up and stopped working. this was extremely dangerous at a rate of 70 mph because the vehicle slowed all the way down to 25 and had no power. i have had so many issues with this vehicle that i am now checking for recalls to have the vehicle serviced completely.
this is an intermittent problem with this vehicle.i am 3rd owner. 2nd owner had same problem. the speedometer fails to register correct speed. i am currently using a automotive scan tool to verify actual speed. the most interesting thing about this is it does not occur all of the time. just when i am getting 19.5 mph or better with a lot of traffic. 1 week ago i had 20 vehicles in back of me. turns out my speedometer was 20 miles an hour off. i was going 35 in a 55 mph zone.good thing i had my scan tool with me. this is a problem gm has recalled other vehicles for. my question is why the nhtsa is allowing this. these are the same clusters that were recalled for the silverado. why even have an agency as important as this one if it does not do anything about all of these complaints. there are many speedometer complaints.gm says replace the cluster .it still works some of the time so what is the real issue. it should have completely failed by now if it were electrical or mechanical. the owner should not have to pay for this. why discriminate against trailblazer owners. not even an investigation. *tr
The car takes off as if it doesn't want to allow shift change. it automatically changes on it's on. transmission starting to slip. *tr
2003 trailblazer ltz. i've been having problems with the gauges on the dashboard. oil gauge went out about a year ago, then the fuel gauge went out about 6 months ago, and now the rpm just went out a few weeks ago. are there a recall to fix the electrical problem on the dashboard? i was able to look at the odometer and see how many miles i have left until i need to fill up. *tr
This is a third time the abs warning light has come on malfunctioning saying we need service once in montana and then another incident in 2008. "service brakes, air antilock abs warning lights come on in the drivers information center. however, it happens every time it gets 5 to 10 degrees or more below zero. the first time i took it into garage and they cleaned up the abs ground connection on the frame. this is a safety issue because a person doesn't know if it is accurate or another false alert. i would hope that other persons report these issues, and that the manufacturers would be forced to repair the issue. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet trailblazer. the contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed, a burning odor was present inside the vehicle. the contact diagnosed that a failed electrical wiring attached to the heater blower caused the failure. the vehicle was repaired by the contact on multiple occasions but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 80,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet trailblazer. the contact stated that the key could be removed while the vehicle was in gears other than park. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the ignition switch and the abs failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was unavailable. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000. updated 12/9/14* cn updated 8/31/2017*cn
Our speedometer quit working last month and started working again a week later. it stopped again 2weeks ago and hasn't worked since. now i am worried all gauges will quit. i have read many other owners that have same issues with this vehicle. *tr
About 1 year ago all dashboard instruments quit working, or all gauges quit working only thing that works is the speed odometer and when it gets cold it doesn't work. and the back window latch doesn't lock even with the key. and the rear wiper also quit working at the time that everything else quit. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet trailblazer. when the brake pedal was depressed, the abs and security warning indicators illuminated. in addition, all the gauges on the instrument panel failed. the contact stated that the terminal battery needed to be disconnected and reconnected in order for the instrument panel to function properly. the failure occurred on several occasions. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 115,000.
I have a 2003 trailblazer that has a speedometer that does not work correctly, on the highway the speeds vary and sometimes show that it is going 0 miles for hours other times it will show different speeds such as 35 or 45 while driving at the same speed of traffic which is 70 mph. the oil pressure gauge is stuck beyond the highest lever and at intermittent times the tachometer does not work. there is also an issue with the heating and cooling fan where the fan will not blow at all and you have to shut the car down and restart it to get the fan to blow at all. the ac and heat are also not changing in temperature at all. i have read many complaints about the speedometer and instrument cluster and find it ridiculous that there has not been a recall put forth on this, especially to ensure motorists are traveling at the correct speeds ensuring the safety for all and that gm has not offered any type of recall for the trailblazer but has on different models with the same problem in the same model years. *tr
The speedometer worked great for about 20 minutes then it just slowly stopped working. sometimes it comes on sometimes it doesn't, i have no idea how fast i'm driving. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet trailblazer. the contact stated that the front and rear drivers side power window failed. additionally, the contact stated that the parking brake failed to activate when engaged. the contact mentioned that she replaced the rear drivers side tail light and brake light on more than two occasions. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 147,000.
