My speedometer on the instrument panel either fails completely, works when it wants to, or reads inaccurately, thereby causing a serious safety situation when driving my vehicle on public roadways; putting me and the other community members where i drive in harms way since i can't tell how fast/slow i am going! *tr

Speedometer needle on my 2003 chevrolet pickup becomes erratic and stops working at interstate speeds. this happened several times while traveling across country. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact noticed that the instrument panel gauges malfunction and display inaccurate readings. the dealer replaced the oil semi-unit. immediately after the repair, the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer and they stated that the instrument cluster needed to be replaced at the cost of over $500. the manufacturer did not assist. the vehicle has not been repaired. the failure mileage was 56,000 and current mileage was 107,000.

The displayed speedometer speed is less then actual. initially the displayed speed was only off by 10 to 15 miles resulting in driving in excess of the posted speed limit and approaching vehicles in front of me too quickly before i realized that the displayed speed was incorrect. the problem has advanced and now the speedometer usually displays a speed of 10 miles or less no matter what the actual speed is. dealership has been notified and has quoted a repair price in excess of $400. dealership also indicated that this is a known issue and that there is a technical bulletin about this issue. part has not been replaced yet.*cn

Speedometer / tachometer intermittent failures - wrong speeds shown. *tr

In my 2003 chevy silverado ex cab z71 ls my speedometer doesn't work properly when cold. for example, when i first enter the vehicle and the temperature inside the cab equals the temperature outside the cab which is equal to 40 degrees or less, my speedometer stays at zero until the cab warms up. once the cab warms up and i come to a stop and then continue moving, the speedometer reads properly. i have video evidence of this. *tr

Speedometer quit working. tachometer jumps to 6k-7k when the dash lights are on for a significant period of time. oil pressure gauge goes to zero. *tr

The speedometer on my 2003 chevy silverado fails to register correct speed. the instrument has been replaced once before under warranty. now it is failing again. it seems the instrument is designed to function for no more than 50-60,000 miles. *tr

(1) hot humid weather was apparently too much for my vehicle air conditioner. (2) the air conditioner blower motor resistor failed in addition to the associated electrical wiring going to the resistor. (3) the parts that were replaced cost $51.62, and the labor to replace the parts cost $445.00. the failure occurred with just over 31,000 miles on the vehicle. this failure could have just as easily resulted in a fire within the dashboard assembly in the passenger compartment of the vehicle. *tr

The speedometer has started acting erratic. it will not show the correct speed, often sticks on a particular speed when i know i'm either going slower or faster. at times it shows i'm going in excess of 120 mph. it sometimes goes back to 0 when it is shutdown. it may, or may function correctly the next time it is started. since this is all i have to rely on to determine if i'm traveling the correct speed, is the manufacturer responsible if i exceed the speed limit while i am relying on this for an indication of my speed? *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500. the speedometer displays inaccurate readings, which resulted in a traffic citation. the speedometer could display 100 mph while driving at a normal rate of speed. when the vehicle is stopped, the display will read 60 mph. the speedometer has functioned normally only once. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer because they will charge $600 for a diagnostic. the current mileage was 104,000 and failure mileage was 90,000.

At around 124,000 miles while driving on the highway, i noticed my speedometer said i was going 55 mph. i gave it some more gas and the speedometer never rose, only fell down to 0. after my trip where this initially happened my speedometer has done this nearly every trip where the speed reaches 70 mph. today, 11/13/07, i received a notice from gm that they were aware of the problem. however, being that my truck has more than 70,000 miles they are unable to fix it at their expense. calls to gm have been no help and the problem will not be covered by them, even though they know it is happening to alot of these model vehicles. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet silverado. the contact stated that the speedometer failed. the dealer advised that the vehicle was not under recall. repairs would be at the contacts expense. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 90,000 and the current mileage was 128,000.

I have a 2003 chevy silverado. i bought the truck last year. from the first day that i bought the truck, i heard a ticking coming from the dashboard. about a month ago, i noticed that my speedometer was very erratic and then completely stopped working. also, the electric mirror has quit working along with the seat belt sensors. *jb

2001 chevy z71 truck. all of the gauges quit working on the instrument panel. the speedometer is stuck at 100 mph, the tachometer, oil, temperature and gas gauges register zero. *tr

The 2003 chevy silverado has a documented defect on their speedometers and gauges and refuse to correct this if you do not meet a 7yr/70,000 warranty period. the issue has been reported in as few as 28,000 miles to over 150,000 miles. this is an unsafe defect reported by chevrolet that the do not recognize as necessary to cover for everyone. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500. while the vehicle was parked and with the keys in the ignition, a passenger turned the keys one notch. the vehicle was shifted out of the park position, which caused it to roll forward. the passenger did not have his foot on the brake pedal at any point. the service manager at the dealer stated that the vehicle is able to do that for towing purposes. the current and failure mileages were 126,000. the consumer stated when purchasing the vehicle he was informed you would have to push on the brake in order to transmission out of brake position and was alarmed to find that his vehicle was the only vehicle that has the defect. the consumer stated would like the dangerous defect investigate it as it is unsafe for not only him but also children that could easily get into the vehicle and move the it. updated 08/24/07 *tr

I have a 03' chevy silverado 1500 z71 with 70,000 miles. just recently i have noticed that the speedometer shows 30mph while not moving. at 60mph it registers over 120mph. i feel this is a very dangerous problem that i would like to see fixed by gm at no change. *tr

The speedometer on my 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500 began to malfunction with less than 60,000 miles on the odometer. the indicated speed would suddenly increase for no reason and would not recede with braking or with an actual decrease in speed traveled. i could not rely on the speedometer anymore and began to rely on the tachometer to estimate speed of travel. i researched this online and found an abundance of similar complaints about failing speedometers for chevy silverados. a query to a dealer indicates the remedy is a complete replacement of the instrument cluster at an estimated cost of $420.00. *tr

On may 20, 2007 at 41,300 miles, the speedometer, tachometer, temperature, oil and fuel gauges stopped working. these gauges were not digital, they werea moving dial/stick. the digital odometer and instrument panels still work. all fuses have been checked and none were blown.*ak a google search by me gas uncovered numerous complaints like mine and two federal lawsuits being filed recently in wa and or.

I own a 2003 chevrolet silverado lt z-71 and the speedometer will get stuck in the middle while at stop and while driving about 55 will be pegged out. i took it to the dealer and he told me it was a very common problem and should be on recall. i found an online forum with several hundred disgruntled gm owners having the same problem, most of them say the repairs cost around $700 and the problem sometimes reoccurs. i am a diehard gm fanatic and have owned several and everytime i had a problem it was minor, but this is not a minor problem. in the forum i found there is talk of a class action law suit and i would hate to see this problem go that far, when a recall would take care of the problem. i have seen recalls on alot more minor stuff from gm, so what is the hold up? i cant afford to spend $700 to fix faulty workmanship. the tachometer also doesn't function right, but that doesn't bother me as much as the speedometer. i have also learned that fuel guages may not function properly either and that worries me because my wife uses this truck and has my children with her most of the time and we live in the middle of nowhere and if she runs out of gas she may not have cell service to call someone and the thought of my wife, five year old daughter, and infant son walking down the highway late at night doesn't sit well with me. please do the responsible thing and recall your faulty equipment. *ak

The entire instrument panel was acting up, then the speedometer was showing 20 when i was stopped, then it would go below 0, and no finally it does not work at all. i received a letter saying chevy knew this was a problem but would only fix it if the truck had less than 70,000 miles and was under 7 years old. *tr

When operating turn signals intermittently turns on both signals, so other drivers can't tell what direction i'm turning or changing lanes nearly causing accidents. also had this problem corrected approximate year ago at joe panian chev dealership and problem started again about week ago. *jb

Took 2003 silverado in to dealership to have computer updated, ever since then i have been experiencing problems with the speedometer. it is erratic, and displays speeds much higher than actual speed. i am able to turn ignition on and off to get it to reset back to zero, but that is not always easy when traveling down the freeway.*ak

The dash instrument cluster panel on my 2003 chevy silverado went out. none of my gauges a functional. not even the gas gauge. i'm afraid if i run out of gas in heavy traffic, there could be a serious injury. i got a letter from gm, they say its a known problem, but wont recall the part. they only fix it for you if you are under 70,000. mine went out at 70,000 so they will not recall or repair. if its a known problem, it should be recalled. please help me & probably many others get this recalled. *tr

Speedometer needle sticks and gives inacurate speed. can cause accident due to wrong speed. i personally find myself lokking in the rear view mirror to try to keep the proper speed. vey dangerous for my family. *ak

Tl*- the contact stated that while driving the 2003 chevrolet silverado with 11830 failure mileage at 65 mph the speedometer read 120 mph. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who determined that there was an internal failure of the instrument cluster. the vehicle had been repaired. the current mileage was 12,000.*ak update *4/23/07tr

Erratic speedometer, reads anywhere from 35 mph to over 120 mph at all times. *jb

Speedometer reading is erratic at best. problem is getting worse. needle starts off at between 20-60 mph. returns to zero sometimes. sometimes it moves. sometimes it is just stuck. have heard from numerous other people experiencing similar problems. *jb

Speedometer failures on 2003 chevrolet silverado pickup. i had dealer replace when it was still under warranty and it has failed again. speedometer is erratic and you cannot tell what speed you are traveling. *jb

My speedometer began malfunctioning. it had the wrong speed displayed and caused to me to exceed the speed limit for several miles and then i going slower than the speed limit. both situations caused me to have close run-ins with other vehicles. *jb

2003 chevy silverado speedometer not working. *nm

I currently own a 2003 chevy silverado and my speedometer and tachometer currently do not work. i contacted the dealer and they mentioned that it is common but the entire instrument panel needs to be replaced. ($500) i asked what caused the problem and was told that a plastic gear wears out. after searching the internet there is a lot of people complaining about this problem. *jb

Speedometer stopped working at 53000 miles. apparently, all internal parts. many other people with the same situation. this type of part should not fail until 300,000 + miles or 25 years! most people are quoted (and paid) $500 - $1,000 to repair the problem. i've got a call in to gm dealer, but haven't heard back yet. *jb

While driving over 55 mph the speedometer sticks and jumps up and down. finally stops working and needle points down. no way of judging speed. had it reprogrammed at cost of 10.00, didn't fix problem. had a gage cluster order and installed at cost of 300.00. this is clearly a defect in cluster in a lot of trucks and should be repaired at no cost to owner. my truck had 30,650 miles on it when this happened. *nm

Speedometer works improperly. *tr

My speedometer is stuck at 65 mph at a standstill. *jb

I own a 2003 chevy silverado and the speedometer has been very erratic lately. i have approximately 75,000 miles on my truck. i can be traveling at 65 mph and the speedometer will read 30 mph or even 0 mph. there is really no consistency to how the speedometer measures my speed. *jb

Instrument cluster went dark. can not read the speed of the vehicle at night. *jb

My 03 chevy silverado speedometer is acting erratically. it has become stuck at 60 mph when at a full stand still stop. the problem has not gone away and is causing me much concern when traveling on the highway. *jb

I have a 2003 chevrolet silverado. the speedometer will go all the way to 120 mph and stick there. sometimes it will fall back to around 80 but it will not read correctly. after starting the vehicle about 10-15 times it will reset to 0 and the do it again. *tr

Speedometer sticks at various readings and is rarely accurate. i have already received one ticket ($140). i am concerned about the safety factors involved with this problem and think gm should be forced to do a recall. also today, my windshield wipers would not turn off. (had to pull the fuse) i have researched this on the internet and have found that numerous complaints have been issued about both of these problems. something should be done about this. i have documented all of this and kept copies of all complaints and emails. just to have something to fall back on when my wipers go out and i get into an accident. something must be done. i can assure you that my next truck won't be "made in america" i contacted dealer and they assured me they could repair it for under 1000.00 wow, what a bargain considering it should be a recall. thanks for letting me vent. *nm

Speedometer is stuck at 60 mph while parked and does not go back down to zero. *jb

2003 silverado speedometer problem. pins at 120 mph all the time. disconnect battery for 10 minutes. speedometer fine for about 2 days, then same thing. based on research, seems to be a common problem. recall??? *nm

Speedometer is all messed up it has inaccurate readings most of the time and doesn't work at all the rest of the time. the dealer claims no responsibility and is asking $500.00 to fix. my daughter recently notified me that a local news station had many consumers complaining of the exact same problem and that some of them had received speeding tickets when their speedometer failed. this is a serious issue that gm needs to address. *jb

2003 chevy silverado speedometer not working. sticks. sometimes works. dealer said $500 to fix. know 3 other 03-04 silverado owners with same problem. *nm

Speedometer erratic. does not reflect actually speed. normally jumps or stays at 20 mph. definite safety issue and i can see by web research a very common problem. how does one maintain proper separation distance ? where's the recall ?? *tr
